A Stunning Vision of New York Retaken by Nature: “Wrapped”

The only constant is change.

Translation:
The decay of one is the basis for the life of the other. The world with its infinite interplay of eating and being eaten takes on a new dimension when the unexpected power of nature meets the existing structures of our society. What is believed to last forever will melt away over time. The only constant is change.

Yeah. I don’t think it was ever that young people really weren’t going to be affected, just that they were more likely to survive it, barring any sort of pre-existing issue that left them immunocompromised or particularly susceptible to respiratory problems.

Not even getting into the fact that even being unaffected doesn’t mean you can’t carry the thing to those who would be.

Markedly less so, in that while Gen X is on the political bubble Boomers are far more likely to have been believing Trump while watching and consuming misinformation about this on FOX. They’re also firmly on the hockey stick part of the COVID-19 mortality curve.

Well, it’s been nice knowing you. I hope I live on here in legend and song. /s

I don’t watch FOX, but my FOX watching neighbours are still plenty capable of giving this to me.

As for now, there still aren’t any known cases here and the Panhandle is on lockdown from the outside.

I’m very pleased to note, looking at the VA’s page on Covid-19, that the VA has done a whole 233 tests out of the tens of millions of veterans in the country who are served by the VA. Out of those, 37 are positive and in hospital or presumed positive and in hospital or at home.

re: #123 BigPapa

I had ‘The Talk’ with the Wife Unit last night and literally saw/felt Normalcy Bias in my own mind. I pushed her to think about what we would do if I got symptoms: lock me in bedroom and have her sleep with mom? I saw/felt her getting uncomfortable as only a married couple together for 20 years can do. I felt like changing the subject because I felt her discomfort and wanted to protect her. But I pressed on: we need to think of this now so when it happens we move to protocol; it will probably happen sooner than we think; how long to maintain protocol? We should have two/three weeks of supplies so we don’t go out and spread, how will we deal with that?

I feel better now, but it was tough. Plus mom made some Filipino food and that sorta busted us out of the worried mindset.

After reading your comment, I asked my own wife about this. Neither of us has family we can rely on; we’re pretty much on our own (both our families have disowned us over religion).

We pretty much came to the conclusion if one comes down with this, the other will stay to help, and neither of us wants to live without the other.

So we will stay together.

So I’ve been tracking doubling times in Italy, US, MA, and MI.

Its not slowing down much in US. The average of a 4 day exponential fit for the last 10 days is 2.62 days. Numbers are
2.30 0.990
2.79 0.996
2.66 0.990
2.50 0.994
2.47 0.995
2.59 0.999
2.59 0.999
2.78 0.995
2.98 0.999
2.53 0.982
First number is doubling rate. Second number is R^2 of fit.

Good news is Italy’s quarantine is paying off 4-5 days later. New cases very high, very bad, but not really increasing.

Two things to know - 4-5 days is average to symptoms. 8 to 9 days is when more severe respiratory symptoms start to occur if you get them. See annals.org

And here we go. It’s in the community here in Nebraska. This explains why Panhandle Public Health District went draconian on who travels outside the Panhandle a couple days ago.

State total now 18

LINCOLN - The first community transmitted case of coronavirus disease 2019 was identified in Douglas County yesterday. Today, contact investigations related to cases of COVID-19 in Douglas County also have identified several events and locations in the Omaha area and Sarpy County that could result in potentially high numbers of people exposed in the community and could affect Nebraskans statewide.

People who were at the following locations - douglascountyhealth.com - during the time frames mentioned should self monitor for the development symptoms that include a fever, cough, shortness of breath and in some cases a sore throat.

dhhs.ne.gov (Nebr. Department of Health and Human Services)

Douglas County is where Omaha is located. That will likely jump the river into Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sarpy County has a bunch of suburbs of Omaha.

On the other hand, Neb. DHHS is passing along questionable information.

LINCOLN - As Nebraskans are taking preventative measures against COVID-19, the Drinking Water division of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) would like to remind everyone that drinking water remains safe to use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that COVID-19 has not been detected in drinking water, and that conventional water treatment methods of filtration and disinfection — which are in most municipal drinking water systems — should remove or inactivate the virus causing COVID-19.

“Common disinfection methods used in water and wastewater treatment are expected to be effective for inactivation of coronaviruses when executed properly,” said Sue Dempsey, administrator of the DHHS Drinking Water Division.

Although drinking water from the tap is safe for public consumption, federal guidance also recommends that the public consider maintaining a supply of bottled water. If people are ill and have to isolate in their own homes, it is easiest to use bottled water rather than sanitizing water glasses that might be shared with the rest of the household.

dhhs.ne.gov

That might be the source of runs on bottled water y’all are experiencing.

As for water treatment killing the virus, chlorinating a water supply would do that if the virus was in the water (provided the chlorine level was high enough). For those of us out here in the west, many water systems do not chlorinate.

That said, for the virus to get into the water supply, it would already have to be comprimised in some way (how does someone cough into a water system). It is very unlikely the virus will get down into the ground a hundred feet to be sucked up in a city well water system.

Yes, I agree its imperfect. At some point the numbers fit an exponential (as expected) so well you must be capturing some aspect of the underlying spread - the group of people with a minimum amount of symptoms to seek medical care and the people that are known contacts of confirmed cases. There are many more that are low symptom/asymptomatic that are not accounted for or symptomatic people that aren’t tested or don’t report.

Its a guess. I’ve been tracking for a few weeks out of concern for someone else. I bought supplies (not excessive) and had time to iterate with meds, etc a good 2-3 weeks ago. Honestly, and gladly the closures were faster than I thought they would be. I was using per capita to compare our area and the US to Italy to know when we would feel it like them. Plan not panic.

But for the US that means the estimated deaths would be cut in half from 2.2 million to 1.1 million. See independent.co.uk

If Britain and the United States pursued more ambitious measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus, to slow but not necessarily stop epidemic over the coming few months, they could reduce mortality by half, to 260,000 people in the United Kingdom and 1.1 million in the United States.

Finally, if the British government quickly went all-out to suppress viral spread - aiming to reverse epidemic growth and reduce the case load to a low level - then the number of dead in the country could drop to below 20,000. To do this, the researchers said, Britain would have to enforce social distancing for the entire population, isolate all cases, demand quarantines of entire households where anyone is sick, and close all schools and universities - and do this not for weeks but for 12 to 18 months, until a vaccine is available.

[…]

The modellers did not give numbers for the United States for the most intense suppression efforts.

Once this outbreak runs its course, epidemiologists will do case studies to figure out what really happened. For now, though, we’re just hanging on.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts (R) has issued an executive order to try to limit the spread of the virus in the state.

Updates to event size and closure guidance that are effective immediately include:
Public events and gatherings are limited to 50 people or less statewide.
Bars and restaurants will move to takeout only on a regional basis when:
A second community transmission case is confirmed in the Omaha area.
1-2 confirmed community transmission cases in Lincoln.
1 confirmed community transmission case for other Nebraska communities and Nebraska’s Educational Service Units.

The governor has also authorised virtual meetings for various boards and municipal governments.

As we currently “shelter in place” I keep asking myself what we’re going to do when the 3 weeks are over. I’m not seeing how everything is going to be all better. The curve will theoretically have flattened, but if we all pick up where we left off, it will head back up pretty fast. If we don’t pick up where we left off, a lot of people won’t have a job, a roof over their head, and enough to eat.

My sister asked the same question. A lot of this is based on computer models, and I’m betting that the forecast past the 3-week “social distancing” isn’t resolved in enough detail to be able to advise. We could go three weeks and then find out that all our efforts were for nought. Or, in three weeks it might actually be safe to slowly resume normal activities.

My church has canceled in-person services for the foreseeable future. They’re keeping these virtual communities under 50 people so as to ensure that we can meet if there is a need for a mass exchange of goods or services.

I’m not sure what the Lutheran church here could do about virtual services, since even the church itself has no Internet service, much less the people in town.

Hmm. On that tool from ProPublica (how fast does your hospital fill up over Covid-19), punching in “Bridgeport, NE” (our county hospital) returns “no such address” and punching in “Scottsbluff, NE” returns hospitals in Denver.

Yeah, I punched in “Mesa, Arizona” (a city of nearly 500,000 people) and got nothing. I had to put in “Phoenix, Arizona” to get the “Phoenix Hospital District.” I think this works off some sort of region system.

It might be worthwhile if the FCC relieved its heavy restrictions on obtaining a low-power community radio station license. Though permitted by laws signed in 2010 by President Barack Obama, the FCC continues to stonewall on offering low-power community radio licenses (there are two categories: 100 watts effective radiated power, and 10 watts absolute power).

Heck, I’d put a station on the air here if I could get a license, but the FCC has not been accepting applications.

So the South Korea death toll now is 84. Their total cases are 8413, thus the case death rate is 1%, so far.

Note that S.K. has done a great deal of testing (especially compared to the US) and has tested many young people.

So S.K.’s experience so far replicates the Diamond Princess, which has almost the same case death rate as S.K.

As expected, Trump is using this crisis to further his xenophobic Americanism:

Trump administration takes steps to close border to migrants, citing coronavirus

The Trump administration is taking steps to close the southern border to certain migrants, citing the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

U.S. immigration authorities could soon begin immediately removing migrants who enter the U.S. between official ports of entry and turning them back to Mexico, saying it will help stanch the expansion of the pandemic, officials told The Times.

[…]

In reality, so far the worse COVID-19 outbreaks on the US border are in British Columbia. By far.

But no, it’s those nasty Mexicans that are the problem.

I’m still displeased with out the Democratic party nomination process turned out.

When very rich men - Bloomberg, Steyer, Yang - decided to go on vanity campaigns they pushed aside the real governance types (Harris, Booker, O’Rourke, Warren).

And Biden deciding to run meant that the middle-of-spectrum younger ones - Buttigieg, Klobucher - found their support weak.

We could have done so much better.

But our polity is broken. American elections have since the beginning not really been about the common person but instead the powerful. Sure, some, many Presidents came from humble beginnings (Truman, Nixon, Reagan) but by the time they became President they were part of the American money enterprise. Truman probably stands out for his willingness to be less of a money grabber, and his successor (Eisenhower) too, though Ike was part of the military industrial establishment.

I don’t like that Biden is so old. I’m not agist, I’m a realist. At his age, if Biden comes down with Covid-19 not only is there a decent chance he will die, but if he recovers he may still be impaired. Trump is old too, and not healthy (unlike his lying doctors’ claims). So there’s that.

Ultimately blame Trump. A standard issue Republican would be reassuring enough that Biden would probably have been content to be an elder statesman and mentor. The younger ones would be running mostly as a trial run for 2024 and a chance to move the party forward. Or it might have been, in another universe, Beau Biden with Dad his greatest supporter.

I hope we’ll be able to go on with less rigorous restrictions.

(Or one of the new treatments they’re testing will prove useful — that would be good, too.)

Yes, so the excuse for Trump not recognizing the severity of the problem is that the impeachment occupied too much of Trump’s, and his inner circle’s, time and attention.

If only those busy-body Democrats would just have left Trump alone, then he would have acted earlier.

So that’s the argument.

Bernie isn’t closing the gap. Just the opposite. Democrats have voted emphatically to tell Bernie that he’s not the chosen one. They went with Biden.

I have to admit, I didn’t see that coming. I thought Biden was toast after the early races, and even SC was a huge surprise. Biden has run 2x and failed 2x previously, but he pulled a royal flush out of thin air to not only dominate from SC - forcing everyone else to concede, but to turn it into a 2 person race with Bernie, which was the last thing Bernie ever wanted because Bernie never thought to expand his base.

What we’ve repeatedly seen from Bernie is a refusal to grow his base and attack those who don’t come around to his position, while Biden not only expanded his base, but has adopted some key planks from his former rivals. That’s why they back and endorse him. Biden’s doing what politicians do - build consensus within the party, which makes it stronger. Bernie’s got no interest in any of that.
