About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation’s history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Just watched this documentary on bullshit actual fake news. It covers Comet Pizza, Seth Rich, Alex Jones and Burkman and Wohl and talks to the main principles in depth as well as many journalists. It’s pretty good but doesn’t get much beyond the surface (not sure how it could). Burkman is under rated as a slimy piece of shit. I rate it a B-

So wingnuttia is piling on to Burr, a Republican, that he should resign.

At this point I suspect the real fear is that Burr is not a friend of Trump, and the hate-right knows this. Burr is friends with the usual rich deep pockets of the GOP, so Burr is all-in with helping them. But Burr appears to not be obeisant enough to Trump for the likings of deplorables.

Glad someone is pushing back, publicly

President Donald Trump’s directive for governors to buy their own medical supplies to fight the coronavirus has run into a big problem — the federal government.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker told Trump during a video conference on Thursday that his state three times lost out to the federal government on purchases of critical supplies, creating an awkward moment during the made-for-TV event at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Washington.

“I’ve got a feeling that if someone has the chance to sell to you and to sell to me, I am going to lose on every one of those,” a sheepish-sounding Baker told Trump, who chuckled at the remark.

Including the reply with Zakaria’s remarks because it needs to be heard, over and over again

39
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 19, 2020 • 8:34:47pm

My guess that the plan is this:

1) get Burr (not daily obeisant to Trump) to resign.
2) hope that Cooper appoints a Democrat to replace Burr.
3) then use that action of Cooper to rally the Republicans in NC to replace Cooper this fall.

Well, She Who Must Be Obeyed is making a run to Wheatsville Coop, tomorrow.

We need protein, veggies, yeast, and coffee. She’ll be gloved and masked.

So my typical day right now. I walk down to the C-store two blocks away, buy the local fishwrap and the NYT, walk back up the hill hill and wash my hands. Read the papers, do the puzzles, wash my hands again. Do some yard work, wash my hands. The house next door has been moved off-site and the old one is being replaced with a new one, beautifully rebuilt by the land owners, who are architects.

Most of the subcontractors are staffed by people who play conjunto music. I suspect they are not documented, like the vast majority of subcontractors in Central Texas. Depending on the house, it’ll save you 20 to forty thousand dollars on your new home. They don’t have any bennies or insurance.

I take a nap. I read my books (although the Austin library system was shut down on Wednesday). I’ve got about four days left on my backlog. I take a long walk down to Town Lake Park, keeping my distance from other people.

Despite the time with SWMBO, this is a lonely sad time for me. I crave more human contact with my friends. I don’t like standing ten feet from my neighbors hurling pleasantries across the street. I want more than elbow bumps.

This really sucks, and I think if I don’t die from this plague this will be my reality for another six months.

Excuse me, I’ve got to wash my hands before bed. Night all.

At this point, I don’t understand whether they’re just trying to ramp up his stupid trade war again to get his magats all excited, escalate things to a new cold war, of if they want us to go to *actual* war with the most populous country in the world.

None of which will help one god damned bit, and all of which will make things markedly worse at best.

I’m going with the latter. The racist’s wet dream is to purge the US of anyone who’s not like them.

Not in this corner of the world. Here it’s non-Kosher quality stuff for the most part. About half a year ago they even launched a series of gourmet pizzas designed by a well-known local chef.

Naturally, folks visiting the U.S. who try the stuff we have back home are met with quite a shock as a result.

Four people aboard cruise ship test positive for coronavirus in Sydney

Four people aboard a cruise ship that berthed in Sydney on Thursday morning and had also docked in Wellington have tested positive for coronavirus.

Other passengers who may have been exposed have disembarked the ship.

One confirmed case is a staff member who was allowed to board another cruise with a new group of passengers that is at sea between Sydney and Wollongong.

New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard is urging all 2700 passengers and 1100 crew who were on board the Ruby Princess that arrived at 6am from New Zealand to self-isolate immediately.

Carnival should just retire its “Princess” brand when this is all over.

I’m angry at all the inside-trading Senators, but especially disappointed in DiFi. She used to be THE BEST at anticipatory life-saving.

For example, when she was mayor of San Fran, she pushed through (against a lot of resistance) a $10 million earthquake retro-fit of Candlestick Park. This was a big part of what got her to the Senate in the first place; that project is the reason why Loma Prieta didn’t kill 20,000 baseball fans during the World Series.

(ETA: On camera. ESPN was broadcasting the game, they broke news of the quake minutes before USGS or network news got to it).

Doug Ducey, governor of Arizona, finally did something:

* Activated the National Guard to help grocery stores and food banks
* Ordered all elective surgeries to be cancelled
* Ordered all restaurants in counties with a confirmed case of coronavirus to shut down their dining rooms and go with takeout or drive through.
* Closed bars, movie theatres and gyms
* Waived the expiration date of drivers licenses (we actually don’t have much of a problem with this since licenses expire on one’s 65th birthday but you have to get a picture every 12 years, which is annoying).
* Restaurants will be allowed to deliver liquor with food orders

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema thinks the order should be extended to all counties, not just the six counties with reported cases, otherwise she’s good with this. The mayor of Phoenix, Kate Gallego, is happy with this because she was trying to shut down restaurants and bars and realizing it wasn’t going to work without a countywide shutdown.

ETA: the number of cases has risen from 27 to 47 today. Three of the cases are on the Navajo Reservation and that is concerning. Two of the cases are at Luke AFB, also concerning.

The thing you have to keep in mind is while most of the Navajo Nation is in Arizona, good chunks are also in southern Utah and western New Mexico. This article isn’t clear as to whether all the people who have coronavirus on the Nation are in Arizona or not. Nevertheless, this is not a good thing because the Nation is generally remote. All the insiders in Congress were cashing out.

Before this is over, a few Democrats might sure as fuck get caught up trying to secure their personal gains while everyone else watches their 401(k) vaporized, jobs lost, and worse.

But as of the moment, there’s at least 3 GOPers who engaged in insider trading: Burr, Loefler, and Johnson. All sold out right at the peak of the market. Loefler then went all in on telecommute plays.

Is a sale on March 02 really insider trading? The DOW dropped 700 points that day after the fed had an emergency half point cut and it was down almost 3000 points from the high.

1) get Burr (not daily obeisant to Trump) to resign.
2) hope that Cooper appoints a Democrat to replace Burr.
3) then use that action of Cooper to rally the Republicans in NC to replace Cooper this fall.

North Carolina law says that filling a Senate vacancy, the person appointed must be from the same party. Thus Gov. Cooper must appoint a Republican.

And in Czech specifically, there’s “do píči” [the first word is pronounced like Homer Simpson’s “d’oh” and then the second word pronounced like “peach-ee”], which is used as an emotional expression of annoyance ( such as a negative assessment of the situation) or to express astonishment.

As coronavirus cases increase, Gov. Kim Reynolds says Iowa has no plans for shelter-in-place order

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds doesn’t see the need for more drastic action, such as shelter-in-place orders seen in several California counties, to stem the novel coronavirus spread in Iowa.

Instead, she’s counting on Iowans to follow current directives on limited social gatherings, keeping distance from other people and staying home if they feel ill.

The governor had with her their chief medical officer, who stated testing for Covid-19 was not necessary, just stay home if you’re sick.

What this tells me is that they have given up on the idea of chasing an infection’s history of contacts, i.e., just assuming that SARS-Cov-2 is and will remain in the community at large.

By the way…

A few threads back there was discussion regarding firearms for personal protection. Like you, I am concerned about stochastic violence and raging magats.

For those thinking of using a firearm for home or self defense; If they have not already done the following homework, I would strongly urge it before they intend to start doing so.

1. Talk to an attorney experienced in local civilian firearm laws and usage. Each jurisdiction has it’s own peculiarities. Also, anonymous “Internet legal experts” aren’t.

One example, late last century, I was told by my attorney to expect that a “righteous shoot” (ie legal shoot) could require up to two years investigation and $35,000 in legal fees. Beyond My and my loved ones’ lives, not much in my house is worth that.

2. Talk to your trusted ethicists and determine, beforehand, who you would be willing to shoot, when, and why. Do _not_ try to decide that when faced with the actual situation. There isn’t enough brainpower or time at that point.

3. Have a long talk with yourself and those who know you well. On whether you really want to shoot a fellow human being. Even in war, after a lot of training and reinforcement, many soldiers cannot get themselves to shoot an enemy soldier. And some of those who do, castigate themselves for the rest of their lives.

It is a life changing event for most people. There is a lot of benefit in treating it as such and thinking long and hard about it.

4. Walk through where you would use the firearm, ie your house, with someone who knows firearms and decide where and how you could use it without shooting your own family or innocent neighbors and passersby.

I knew an attorney in rural Virginia who shot and killed someone. Frankly, the attorney could be a jerk. But the guy he shot was a bigger asshole and a lot dumber than the attorney. The attorney was no-billed. But he quickly figured out that it would be best if he moved out of the county and to North Carolina. I wasn’t at the shooting, but still wonder if it was really necessary.

Thanks for that. Those are things everyone who owns or are considering buying firearms must consider.

I would add: If you’re going to own a firearm, you need to practice constantly on its use. It does you no good if you own a pistol but can’t hit the broadside of a barn with it. Alternatively, buy a shotgun. Aim is not as important, and bullets won’t go through your walls into the next house across the street.

As for what I would use my shotgun for in home defence, only to defend my life or my wife’s life. I have property insurance for the rest. We’ve gone through the plan before, that if we have an escape route, we take it.

We are stuck in the position of having only one county sheriff and one deputy (and one is always in the office). While I was on the village board, I forwarded an ordinance to recreate the village position of marshal, and it is filled now. However, the marshal also has a regular job and might not be able to respond in a timely manner.

These are also things to consider: How far away is help? In our county the one sheriff’s car can be more than thirty miles away from us.

Clueless rich celebrities not named Donald Trump, part eleventy billion:

Cardi B demands someone at the Pentagon ‘let a b*tch know’ what is going on (Goes to Task & Purpose, a military E-zine, more at the link):

Rapper Cardi B wants someone at the Pentagon to contact her and tell her what is going on with this coronavirus pandemic.

Although the DoD has been issuing daily updates regarding numbers of infected service members, and holding briefings on how the military is dealing with the spread of the virus, fundamental questions still remain: how long is this damn thing going to last? How bad will it get? Should we be freaking out?

Plenty of experts and non-experts disagree over all of those things, but perhaps there is some top secret document buried deep inside the defense secretary’s office that holds the key.

And Cardi B wants it right now, because after days of living in quarantine, even smoking a lot of weed and rolling dozens of blunts can get boring (goes to Cardi B’s Instagram page, about ten second video).

Gov. Ricketts Issues Executive Order to Provide Relief to Restaurants and Bars during COVID-19 Emergency (Goes to the State of Nebraska)

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued an executive order to provide relief to restaurants and bars as they continue to serve Nebraskans during the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) pandemic. In keeping with federal guidelines, the State of Nebraska has issued guidance that restaurants and bars are currently limited to 10 patrons as part of a nationwide social distancing effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

On March 19th, the State of Nebraska directed restaurants and bars in Cass, Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington counties to close their dining / seating areas and move to takeout, carry-out, or delivery only. This action came after the Douglas County Public Health Department reported its second case of COVID-19 that officials could not trace to its origin (commonly known as a “community spread” case).

The Governor’s executive order will permit restaurants and bars statewide greater flexibility to serve Nebraskans during the current public health emergency.

Liquor Licensing - Establishments such as pizza parlors (Class A license holders) will be able to sell beer to customers on take-out or delivery orders. Restaurants (Class I license holders) will be able to sell beer, wine, and spirits to customers placing take-out or delivery orders.

Sale of Alcohol - To encourage social distancing, restaurants and bars will be permitted to sell alcohol on drive-thru or curbside orders without customers having to exit their motor vehicles.
Temporary Operating Permits - Temporary operating permits will be extended from 90 to 180 days.

Waiver of Excise Tax Penalties - Excise tax payees still have the duty to file and pay the excise tax according to statute. However, the executive order will waive penalties for late payments.
Payment of wine and spirit deliveries - Under normal circumstances, wine and spirit deliveries must be paid within 30 days. The executive order will give restaurants and bars 90 days to pay for wine and spirit deliveries for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency. The requirement that beer deliveries be paid upon delivery is not changed.

I wonder if food trucks count as take-out and delivery? Maybe suburban neighborhoods (and even gated communities) could put in special requests to get visits from trucks they normally wouldn’t allow. And the trucks could surely use some new locations, downtown lunch-hour clientele being significantly reduced.

Yup! The phrase ‘under-served’ comes to mind. But, sadly, that is often the case for the “Fly-Over Country” under the current regime.

At the beginning of WW2 the Army sent my father to a post in Eastern Wyoming. During one set of maneuvers he was ordered to move to “Lone Tree Canyon” with his unit. He couldn’t find it on any of his maps. So he turned to his sergeant who had been on post a good bit longer. The sergeant said “I imagine we’ll know it when we see it, Sir.” My father in telling the tale to us kids, paused at that point, and then added, “That sergeant was right”

Yes, as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, I am working to bring about world authoritarian government through something something being a poor liberal in the Nebraska Panhandle, from which I will launch a New World Order from a town of 128.

In the meantime, snark aside, The Real Pandemic Danger Is Social Collapse (Goes to Foreign Affaris, the bimonthly publication of the Council on Foreign Relations, more at the link):

As the Global Economy Comes Apart, Societies May, Too

As of March 2020, the entire world is affected by an evil with which it is incapable of dealing effectively and regarding whose duration no one can make any serious predictions. The economic repercussions of the novel coronavirus pandemic must not be understood as an ordinary problem that macroeconomics can solve or alleviate. Rather, the world could be witnessing a fundamental shift in the very nature of the global economy.

The immediate crisis is one of both supply and demand. Supply is falling because companies are closing down or reducing their workloads to protect workers from contracting COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Lower interest rates can’t make up the shortfall from workers who are not going to work—just as, if a factory were bombed in a war, a lower interest rate would not conjure up lost supply the following day, week, or month.

But I suspect that many even professional investors have yet to really come to grips what a pandemic is going to do over the next 12 months.

I reckon it’s gonna be somewhere in between the Great Recession and the Great Depression. The impact of this, especially in the short to medium-term, is going to be severe.

GameStop Instructs Employees to Ignore Law Enforcement And Not Shut Down

GameStop has informed employees that if local authorities attempt to shut down their store in states with orders to close establishments deemed “non-essential,” they are to inform law enforcement that the company believes they should be “classified as essential retail and therefore is able to remain open during this time.” The instructions came with a flyer to hand over to law enforcement, and includes the phone number for GameStop’s corporate office.

Five employees with access to the instructions and accompanying flyer showed copies to VICE Games today.

In an update, GameStop confirms the original story, citing their importance as a provider of products for work-at-home and remote access.

The Trump administration is warning Americans to avoid all international travel and advising U.S. citizens overseas to come home — or prepare to remain where they are indefinitely.

The advisory issued Thursday by the State Department, believed to be the widest of its kind, could trigger the greatest disruption yet of travel by Americans. There are hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad at any one time. It is not an outright prohibition and does not mention exemptions for business or essential travel. But it says, “Have a travel plan that does not rely on the U.S. government for assistance.

Those options are fast dwindling. Even before the new restrictions, the U.S. airline industry had eliminated or dramatically reduced the frequency of most international flights. Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, said his and other congressional offices have been flooded with complaints from traveling U.S. citizens who say they cannot find transportation home and that U.S. embassies and consulates abroad are not helping them.

No better summary of Trump-kind than to say “don’t count on us.”

Ours is actually run by gamers and have spoken up about multiple practices both immoral and illegal by the company.
It is trying times and we continue to openly question the Management’s thoughts.
Our store stays open for a number of reasons:
Trade ins. Our area is in economic decline since 2006. Drug use is fairly rampant. It is our bread and butter.
Physical medium. Our internet access is getting better but many don’t or can’t access high speed internet.
Distrust of the online buying format. Many people do read about the scams online. They hold that stuff to heart.

We have our detractors and our issues as a whole company and I agree with them. the store I work for tries and I love my coworkers.
I agree that GameStop should shut down for these trying times though and that management can fuck off. But I also work a main job that is essential and doesn’t shut down.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): scientific evidence supporting the UK government response

Among the papers referenced here, some are pre-prints. These are academic papers that have not yet been through the peer-review process, which can take months, and have been drawn upon by SAGE to ensure that the most current evidence is being reviewed in order to provide rapid advice to policy makers.

Some of the bespoke new modelling that SAGE has drawn upon to formulate its conclusions has not yet been published here. This is to allow scientists time to publish their research through the right academic channels.

Where public disorder occurs, it is usually triggered by perceptions about the Government’s response, rather than the nature of the epidemic per se. For example, a perception that the Government response strategies are not effective in looking after the public may lead to an increase in tensions.

They got us into this fucking mess, and they have no plan or clue how to get us out. They’re too busy trying to grease the wheels for their big business buddies, or cashing out themselves. Five of these GOPers engaged in insider trading to sell off their stocks at the peak of the market knowing that covid19 was about to come crashing through like a hurricane and no one in Trumpworld was taking it seriously.

At the same time Trump was saying it was all going to disappear, these GOP fuckers were selling off their stocks knowing that the markets were going to fall once it realized Trump was talking out of his ass again.

The number of cases continues doubling every 2-3 days. The number of deaths are climbing. The number of people testing isn’t nearly sufficient to begin bending the curve, and actions to enforce social distancing are still slow in coming.

Trump and the GOPers are more interested in the stock market and big businesses than the fact that people are dying.

This suggests where there are potential hotspots for covid19, based on fever symptoms being searched for. Florida is a hot zone and if it’s indeed present there in the kind of density suggested, the number of illnesses and casualties will be quite high - they still are slow rolling the social distancing and business closures.

Inferring the number of COVID-19 cases from recently reported deaths

We estimate the number of COVID-19 cases from newly reported deaths in a population without previous reports. Our results suggest that by the time a single death occurs, hundreds to thousands of cases are likely to be present in that population. This suggests containment via contact tracing will be challenging at this point, and other response strategies should be considered. Our approach is implemented in a publicly available, user-friendly, online tool.

Contact tracing was done quite a bit, but clearly it was not enough, and this paper suggests why.

I think that’s the UK government’s underlying assumption. Also, they’re probably bearing in mind there’s still no vaccine for SARS or MERS (granted, research on that wound down once those outbreaks stopped). As gloomy as it sounds, it’s not entirely unrealistic to think there may well be no vaccine for SARS CoV-2, in which case, COVID-19 will become endemic. If, let’s say in March 2021, scientists announce, “Sorry folks…..we’ve done all we can, but just like the common cold, there’s no vaccine for this one”, then we’re just going to have to learn to live with COVID-19.

I fully expect that Florida is going to be the hotspot that gets the attention the next few weeks. While we here in California are grumbling about sheltering in place, at least we’re trying to slow the spread of the virus. I still expect to get it over the next year, but I hope that we can keep the peak down below our ability to deal with the infected.

Apparently, the Kinsa health maps are at least somewhat reliable. NYT had a story on them:

A company that uses internet-connected thermometers to predict the spread of the flu says it is tracking the coronavirus in real time — something that had been impossible, given the lack of testing for the disease.
[…]
For the last few years, Kinsa’s interactive maps have accurately predicted the spread of flu around the United States about two weeks before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s own surveillance tool, the weekly FluView tracker.

One of the papers referenced today in the UK justification release:

Report 9: Impact of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to reduce COVID-19 mortality and healthcare demand

We show that in the UK and US context, suppression will minimally require a combination of social distancing of the entire population, home isolation of cases and household quarantine of their family members. This may need to be supplemented by school and university closures, though it should be recognised that such closures may have negative impacts on health systems due to increased absenteeism. The major challenge of suppression is that this type of intensive intervention package - or something equivalently effective at reducing transmission - will need to be maintained until a vaccine becomes available (potentially 18 months or more) - given that we predict that transmission will quickly rebound if interventions are relaxed. We show that intermittent social distancing - triggered by trends in disease surveillance - may allow interventions to be relaxed temporarily in relative short time windows, but measures will need to be reintroduced if or when case numbers rebound. Last, while experience in China and now South Korea show that suppression is possible in the short term, it remains to be seen whether it is possible long-term, and whether the social and economic costs of the interventions adopted thus far can be reduced.

We better hope that good therapeutics are developed real soon, because there is no way we can shelter in place for over a year.

Long-term lockdowns are probably not going to work in Western societies, no matter how well-intentioned they are. Individual freedoms and civil liberties are simply too deeply-ingrained into the Western world, especially the idea of individualism. It may work to a greater extent in societies where the cultural focus is more collectivist.

Again, it’s a cultural difference. In the Western world, what China did would probably be met with riots, violent protests or outright armed conflict (the latter I could definitely see in the US). The idea of individual freedom/autonomy and civil liberties being paramount is the opposite of what we see in Chinese culture (and other Asian cultures), where individual freedoms are subordinated to the needs of the group.

It’s not a matter of one side being right or wrong - it’s just simply a difference in the way two cultures view such matters in the context of their respective histories and philosophical traditions.

Stop Looking for ‘Leadership’ During the COVID-19 Outbreak

If you really want politicians to do something helpful, ask them to stop “leading” and to get out of the way.

And of course the author jumps on what I have pointed out is obvious:

Panicky curfews and shelter-in-place orders around the country already disrupt life for millions of Americans, including their ability to make a living. But how much good can they do when researchers say “such measures—most notably, large scale social distancing —will need to be in place for many months, perhaps until a vaccine becomes available”?

These people (libertarians) are living in a pretend world. They have no idea how bad a pandemic can get, why governments are necessary in times of crises.

Whatever Singapore is doing, it’s working. They have only 345 cases and as yet, no deaths.

What they are doing: today they clamped down even harder with their social distancing requirements - and in Singapore such requirements are enforced. With several new cases today, most of which they attribute to travelers, they know they have to act fast.

Note that case numbers are going to explode in Malaysia and Indonesia. So Singapore knows how vulnerable they will be. Yet it’s a city-state that totally depends on trade and travel.

read the whole thing:

Adam Serwer: “I don’t mean that I disagree with him on policy, although I do. I don’t mean that I abhor the president’s expressed bigotry toward religious and ethnic minorities, although that is also true…

What I am referring to is the fact that, soon after the coronavirus outbreak emerged in China, the rest of the world began to regard it as a threat to public health, while Trump has seen it as a public-relations problem. Trump’s primary method of dealing with public-relations problems is to exert the full force of the authoritarian cult of personality that surrounds him to deny that a problem even exists… applied to the deadly pandemic now sweeping the planet, all it has done is exacerbate the inevitable public-health crisis, while leaving both the federal government and the entire swath of the country that hangs on his every word unprepared for the catastrophe now unfolding in the United States…

Neither the tide of pestilence sweeping the nation nor the economic calamity that will follow was inevitable. They are the predictable outcomes of the president’s authoritarian instincts, his obvious incompetence, and the propaganda apparatus that has shielded him from accountability by ensuring that the public is blinded to his role in the scale of this disaster.

a bunch of rando comments on that abc/ipsos poll

- he gets graded on a curve
- its one poll, not a trend

- He acted normal for two days! Hooray for him. Yeah the media congratulates the President for not acting like a child. This is what happens when they set the bar so low.

- This is your typical ” rally around the flag” response by the majority of Americans . They “want” to believe things are going to be alright . Same thing happened with Katrina in the beginning as well, and we know how that quickly changed for Bush. The same thing will happen to Trump ….only 10x worse for him. Once Americans see people dying by the hundreds every single day …they will turn on Trump

- Let’s see what happens when it sinks in that U.S. Senators..and probably the Trump Grifters took advantage of insider trading to make BILLIONS while Americans died or lost their jobs.

- This was going to be bad regardless. His incompetence and inaction have made it FAR worse.

- there are dangers of polling during a tsunami— too much going on for people to absorb. No need to unskew, none of this is good for Trump politically. Once things settle a bit, and the wreckage of his neglect is clear, his support will collapse.

More evidence of SARS-Cov-2 being spread in the Navy here in San Diego:

First Navy SEAL tests positive for COVID-19

A Naval Special Warfare Command SEAL is the first to test positive for coronavirus, command officials said Thursday, March 19.

Test results on Thursday confirmed that the second-class petty officer, who was training at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, tested positive for coronavirus. The command is based at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.

“The individual is currently isolated on base and restricted in movement in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines,” said Navy Lt. Matthew Stroup, a command spokesman. “The other members of the group who were in close contact with the sailor are also quarantined on base out of an abundance of caution. They remain in close contact with medical professionals at time.”

Stroup’s statement said that U.S. Special Operations Command and the Navy are committed to taking every measure possible to protect the health of their force.

[…]

I wonder how many SEAL groups the Navy can take offline before the USN doesn’t have an effective special force?

they were pushed back too. from irs.gov

The tax relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred starting on March 3. As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until July 15, 2020, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period. This includes 2019 individual and business returns normally due on April 15, as well as various 2019 business returns due on March 15. Among other things, this also means that affected taxpayers will have until July 15 to make 2019 IRA contributions.

The July 15 deadline also applies to quarterly estimated income tax payments due on April 15 and June 15 and the quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on April 30. It also applies to tax-exempt organizations, operating on a calendar-year basis, that have a 2019 return due on May 15.

The idea, I think, is to break the chain of transmissions with this drastic step. After that, we can go to less rigorous measures. If the average transmission rate is one per infected person, instead of the 2.6 - 3 we’ve been seeing, we have a situation our medical infrastructure can handle.

The mystery of the corona wedding: Couple’s dream day sees THIRTY-SEVEN people infected with COVID-19 but nobody knows how it spread to so many

Mystery surrounds how 37 people contracted COVID-19 after watching a couple tie the knot in a fairy tale ceremony south of Sydney.

Scott Maggs, 37, and Emma Metcalf, 36, married in front of about 140 guests at Tumbling Waters Retreat in Stanwell Tops on March 6.

After their dream day, the couple jetted off on their honeymoon to the Maldives where they learned that six of their guests had caught the deadly virus.

Just two weeks later the number of guests who have tested positive has reached 37, including federal senator Andrew Bragg, and the figure could rise further.

The newlyweds embraced all their guests with hugs and kisses - but bizarrely both have tested negative.

Neither husband or wife has caught it (not that weird statistically) but if they hugged and kissed everyone, they themselves easily are the ones who then spread the infection from one person in attendance to the rest who have caught it. Wider availability of testing means we’re seeing more cases, but the number of cases is going to jump exponentially in the next few days as the NYC metro area ramps up the tests in a big way.

you have been spot on with the mathematical analysis all along

the ratio between ‘true’ cases and ‘known/verified’ cases converging is a good thing - you know, data and all

its still too early to know if / how fast the true cases are still rising

I’m in NJ, and we’re a few days behind NY in terms of cases curve.

But the 18% hospitalization means that by middle of April, it’s going to bump up against capacity (the line we’re trying to flatting the curve against.

Additional capacity from beds within VA, other facilities in the state, etc., is under discussion/development. They’ve pushed out nonessential medical procedures and elective surgeries and trying to clear rooms to prepare for oncoming cases.

I don’t know if we’re going to get there fast enough. I fear that we didn’t move fast enough, and NY was moving faster than other states.

Less than 60% in U.S. trust government’s medical advice, study shows

Before the coronavirus pandemic took hold worldwide, less than 60 percent of Americans said they trust in the medical information and advice they receive from the government, a new study showed Friday.

Gallup said it asked the question to citizens of six countries as part of its Wellcome Global Monitor study. The data was compiled for the year 2018, well before the COVID-19 outbreak began, but the pollster said it indicates trends that are highly relevant to the pandemic now.

The study found 59 percent of Americans said they have “a lot” or “some” of health advice from the federal government. Thirty-six percent said they have “not much” or no trust at all.

The United States showed the least amount of government trust among citizens of the six nations polled. The most trust was found in Germany (83 percent), followed by Britain (81 percent), Spain (77 percent), France (70 percent) and Italy (63 percent).

Limiting these payments for the upper middle class and up is defensible, even if it irritates commentators who’d prefer a more comprehensive approach that mimics a universal basic income. Penalizing the poor during a pandemic, however, is beyond the pale. We’re in the midst of a planned shutdown of the economy that will disproportionately harm low-wage service workers, yet Republicans are concerned about properly rewarding people for work. The new Trump is the same as the old Trump. He can’t help it. He’s incapable of taking responsibility for his role in this crisis — and thus incapable of leading us out of it,” wrote Conway, who is a fierce critic of the president even though his wife, Kellyanne Conway, has a senior role within the administration.

Conway said the president’s apparent sudden shift “can’t conceal the fact that Trump has shown himself to be wholly inept at dealing with the pandemic. It doesn’t change the fact that he puts himself first, always.”

“It doesn’t dissolve Trump’s compulsion to lie, even when truth would serve him best,” he added. “It doesn’t diminish his incompetence, ignorance or propensity for administrative chaos.”

The Anti-Chinese propaganda is working.

For now. Again, this is a massively lagging indicator because most Americans haven’t been paying attention, do not understand what’s coming, and just see a President now reacting to a national and world crisis. They haven’t actually processed any of this yet, they’re just operating on reflexive instincts to support a leader in such times.

Given all that, 55% is an appallingly low number, and considering that George Bush went over 90% after 9/11 I’m not at all worried about what it portends for re-election.

I wonder, as it dawns on America that this is a real crisis and not a “hoax”, how Trump’s childish shenanigans are going to be tolerated.

The new blurb by ABC that 55% of Americans approve of his handling of this crisis isn’t as good as it seems. During past major events most people rallied around the government.

Every day this crisis gets worse, and it will, Trump will feel more pressure. I doubt he can handle it.

On Loeffler’s claim that the stock sales were done without her, or her husband’s, direct knowledge since their portfolios are mainly handled by 3rd-party groups.

Plausible on it’s face since, if you have the money, it’s a common way to have investments handled. They act as a proxy in your name and the buys and sales are directly credited to you.*

However, claiming that it’s essentially a blind trust doesn’t fly as an excuse since it’s way too easy to still advise them to sell, etc. unless you’ve set things up — as a blind trust —** beforehand.

So it’s possible she is telling the truth. It’s also possible that she is lying through her teeth. (Or said something to her husband and he acted accordingly - which gives the same result as her lying.) If she is being truthful, bad luck for her, it happens. But the optics are that she is abusing the trust of the office and should be held accountable. (And maybe some thought given when she took office to how stock sales by 3rd parties in their name might look.)

* - I have some investments set up like this. They act a bit like a mutual fund, but since the purchased securities are in your name the investment group doesn’t have to sell them when they don’t want to in order to cover other investors opting to cash out. So more stable than the usual mutual fund in certain ways.

** - And I mean an honest one, not the travesty Trump claims to have done.

I see this the same as Susan Collins being “concerned”. Do something meaningful about it rather than just bitching on the side about treatment, decorum, etc. Trump has trashed the standards, so they should think about doing something outside the box themselves.

And “having access” is pretty meaningless if it means just getting handed abuse and talking points and being expected to like it. And outside of Fox they are all already heavily vilified by the 35% base. Why not simply embrace it at this point?

There was a scene like this in one of the Planet of the Apes remakes: nuclear plants melting down and exploding because there was nobody there to tend to them properly.

My GF is one of a team of about 24 people in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf who tend to the German Federal Reserve Bank’s daily trading and currency conversions.

They are already separated into teams that are not allowed to be in the office with each other at the same time, one group alternately working from home, so that they can keep the German banking system from grinding to a halt.

Where Anymouse is living, they are probably just recirculating the money amongst themselves. Here, even the little table sellers that show up at school functions to sell home made jewelry and soaps have the card readers that attach to their phones.

Pretty much. I’ve only seen the little Square card readers outside of this area.

You can’t really use them where there is no reliable cell service.

The same goes for credit card readers in stores: Stores aren’t really interested in them (except the big stores like Wal*Mart or Hobby Lobby) sixty miles away, when Internet service costs so much.

The JWs have been told by their leadership not to proselytize right now. As have Mormon missionaries.

I would think they are missing an opportunity to exploit the fearful preach the Good News (tm, marca registrada).

Don’t ever underestimate the gullibility of the American public or MAGAts in general. If the MSM does as deplorable a job as in 2016, we’re doomed. My sister is very much in a depressed state on this - she keeps on saying he’s going to skate and that Feinstein will be the only person prosecuted for the trading scandal. As many of you know, when you talk to family members who have drunk the Kool-Aid, you despair of the future. In our case, he fell down the rabbit-hole on 9/11 and never recovered.

This is true. Several times a month some random stranger will come up to me and say “Did anyone ever tell you you look just like Stephen King?”

I’m sure he’s on it. I worry more that being forced to deal with Trump on this is going to make him turn to strong drink.

PA allows anyone to vote by mail. Pity KY does not see that it would help people participate in governmental functions.

Kentucky doesn’t even want the public at their legislative sessions.

Hmm, got an email from the bank I use about how they are starting to limit hours. Have not thought about how things might react in terms of the cash economy if people have issues getting money or small businesses (especially those that don’t handle plastic) deposit it.

In addition to stocking staples and household items, part of my pre-quarentine prep is always keeping a couple hundred cash on hand.

If Trump were Bush, that number would be around 90%.

If trump were bush we would be in much better shape than we are.

I have a couple hundred I took out of the bank just before all the craziness started. Since I’m not using cash now-just a credit card slid into a reader, I still have almost all of it. Handling cash seems like a bad idea if you can avoid it.
