Once again, the direct consequences of listening to Trump when he claims the tests are available. They aren’t. They’re still being rationed because there aren’t enough on hand.

This site was supposed to be able to process 2500 a day. They burned through that in 4 hours, all while a multi-mile backup clogged all the roads leading to BCC.

This is in my proverbial backyard. We go there every year or so to do hazardous materials dropoff for the county utility (dropping off things like electronics, batteries, cfls, paint, etc.) Once you enter the campus, you ride the ring road to the lot where they set up. I suspect it’s the same thing today.

For it to back up for miles means there were thousands of cars trying to get on to the campus, and there’s no easy way to let those people know that they’ve already run out of tests for the day.

NJ: 11 dead, 890 cases statewide.
NY: now up to 8,299 cases, 38 dead. Officials say 5,151 of those cases are in New York City with 29 dead.

I can’t believe it took me this long to understand the problem.

People whose job descriptions are “reporting” and “journalism” and “news”… for the entirety of his life until 2015 were people whose jobs he thought was supposed to be promotion, marketing and public relations.

No wonder he thinks they’re not very good at it.

There’s really two ways to see Trump’s outburst to Peter Alexander earlier:

- He’s a nasty fucker who can’t stand being questioned and so went with his first instinct, which was to insult Alexander because having him drug out back and roughed up wasn’t an option.

- He’s an old man who has a hard time dealing with stress and pressure and allowed both to get to him when asked a question that otherwise would have been a great opportunity to look “presidential.”

Neither of these is a good look for a guy who’s supposed to be in charge during a prolonged national crisis.

Well, Morey Amsterdam died in 1996 so he might have a bit of trouble slagging Donald Trump (hard, but not impossible given the easy target); Carl Reiner could, of course - even at his advanced age of 127* - and probably has…

The whole “he’s just overwhelmed” and “he’s under a lot of stress” bit doesn’t really lead me to feel overly sympathetic to the asshole, because there are millions of Americans who are currently dealing with a shitload of stress because of this crisis who have to grin and bear it because their managers expect that of them. I’m expected to go into work during this pandemic, deal with people who could be losing their own minds at any time, and be the voice of calm and comfort in the room. Knowing that any one of the people I interact with could be carrying a virus that, if it doesn’t kill me, could be a danger to people in my family. And I’m doing it with the knowledge that I could get a call any day now to tell me the hotel’s been closed and I’m furloughed until further notice.

If I can get through a day without killing someone due to the stress level I’m under, I think the President of the United States should be able to handle a softball question without flipping the fuck out.

Trump’s supporters enjoy his cruelty, but the also like his incontinence.

In the old sense of “not willing or able to control emotions and impulse.”

These are the things they want to do, but are afraid of the consequences of. Hence a big part of their reactionary worldview being how awful it is that there’s a cultural shift towards calling out little interpersonal abuses of power.

71
Targetpractice  Mar 20, 2020 • 12:34:03pm

And one last note: We have not really even begun to reach the level of “Fucked” that many other nations have been at for weeks or longer. We are only now beginning to see the spikes in new cases and deaths, beginning to deal with the shortage of beds and equipment in major cities, and beginning to see the mandatory lockdowns on entire communities. If Trump is already beginning to crumble now under the “stress,” then that bodes very badly for this country between now and November.

Back when 9/11 hit, I blogged almost constantly about the relief, recovery, and then rebuilding process. It was cathartic, because you could see progress.

This is the exact opposite situation. Posting constantly, and each update is worse than the one before all while those in positions of power at the federal level show complete disregard for the facts on the ground. There’s seemingly no end to the bad news, and it’s going to get a lot worse. It’s going to be a rude awakening for the right wingers out there, because they’re going to see this hit their communities hard too. All across the country, places that aren’t taking this seriously are going to watch as covid19 spreads and kills far more than anywhere else in the world (why American exceptionalism, of course!).

We had weeks to prepare for this - to get ahead with aggressive testing and contact tracing, but that’s no longer a possibility. Trump lost us that opportunity, and he continues to lead from behind.

I’m sure that if the film business here and in Canada hadn’t shut down production, that they would be working on something like that even now:

“A Virus Valentine”

An uplifting story about a spirited small-town shopkeeper torn between her attractions to [the rakish returned-son-of-the-town-bigwig] and the earnest local [doctor/dentist/detective], the romancing severely constrained by the necessity to maintain “social distancing”.
All leading up to the heartwarming denouement , the big clinch* when, after a farrago of zany mishaps and bad-timing, Mike and Susan finally reveal their test results to each other: and [SPOILER ALERT]: they’re both negative!!!1!!11!!

And if it gets good ratings, the sequel; “Quarantine For Two”.

It’s not just that he can’t play golf.

Mar-a-Lago also is where Trump goes to play the part of king with courtiers, and get his narcissistic supply refilled by being around fawning people of quality (by his standards).

And while I’m not 100% on this, I’m guessing he also listens to those people and echos their opinions because he wants to mimic their “smart” thoughts but also not directly ask for advice or admit he doesn’t know something.

And his businesses will all suffer too, because they’re all highly leveraged, and the loss of income will push them towards insolvency in short order. If those closures persist, watch for the bankruptcy notices.

Do we know how leveraged they are? They may have some, uh, interesting financing mechanisms. I think one side effect of this meltdown is going to be some very strange financial explosions in odd places because of all the dark money pathways that are relying on “normal” economic behavior, which just got tossed out the window. Trump keeps hyping drugs and anecdotal “cures” because he’s desperate for something, anything, to put this whole crisis to an end so he can claim some measure of “credit” for being involved. This crisis has not only wiped out all of “his” stock market gains, but when the jobs report drops in two weeks, his “historically low” UE rates are disappear and leave everybody finally realizing that the emperor has been nude the entire time. He got impeached to destroy Biden only for Joe to win the nomination, every foreign policy effort has lead to total embarrassment, and his domestic polices are a horror show.

Went to the grocery store earlier today, earlier than I usually do.

The water aisle had a large load of premium water (Evian), nothing else. The sugar-water aisle had more, and the store evidently got delivery of pallets of Powerade.

Eggs are gone as they have been. There apparently was a milk delivery just before I got there as they had full racks of half-gallons, but the other sizes were gone. Frozen food aisle was raided but there were a few things that apparently had been stocked in the morning.

And the paper aisle… still barren. No toilet paper to be seen, or paper towels.

That actually happened here in the former Czechoslovakia during the Communist Era. In the early 1980s, the one and only toilet paper factory in the entire country was catastrophically damaged in a massive fire, rendering it inoperable for about eight months.

As my late father-in-law told me, people resorted to using Rude Právo (the official Communist Party newspaper) as a substitute.

I locked myself down a little over a week ago, and since I’ve had a fever all week, I’m keeping entirely to myself. I’m lucky to have a really good employer that has us working from home, and has waived PTO limits for anyone who catches it. Most Americans are not so lucky.

This is what we’re going to see a lot over the next few months: People at higher levels of government are refusing to do their jobs, so lower levels (President vs Governors, Governor vs Mayors) are going to do their jobs for them. It means it will be harder to get the same results. But it also shows who needs to be replaced.

Some happy music for the COVID-19 apocalypse:

Ghost - Rats (Official Music Video)

Ghost - Dance Macabre

Both of these songs are from the album “Prequelle” - both songs reference the Black Death pandemic that ravaged Europe in the mid-14th century. Indeed, the entire album is about that period of history.

The album was released in 2018 - ironic timing. Now it can be the soundtrack for a global plague.

Yep, should also include closed KMart’s as well.

Good old Fast Eddie may get his real estate expropriated. How fun it would be to find a dyed-in-the-wool libertarian get his real estate used to save people who could give a flying fuck to an individual who drove two iconic retailers into the ground.

Had to wait an hour and a half yesterday to get through to Netflix, but made sure to thank the sweet young man who helped me—I mean REALLY helped—wouldn’t end the call until he had walked me through all the steps to fix my account, so I wouldn’t have to call back and wait.

At the bank today, was at the drive-through window when they put up new signs saying “drive through only” for now. Two tellers, both as nice as could be. I thanked them for being so nice and told them not to get sad if people were mean.

Then to the grocery store, where, as I was checking out, some woman came in and bitched about the hand-wipes being used up (bitched to my checker, like it was her job to fill them.) Told my checker that my bags had just come out of the laundry, so were clean and thanked her for being so nice and working so hard. (Grocery had a few depleted shelves, but overall, no problem finding what I wanted.)

It doesn’t cost a thing to be nice to people who are working to help make our lives easier.

That was my big venture out—first since Monday, and now back to my regular programming, which, even before all this, was to mostly stay home. My friends who have laughed heartily about my ability to amuse myself are now calling for advice on survival tactics.

Oh, and my hand-washing song—a perfect 20 seconds and a positive message (hiding it so those who want to avoid an earworm can.)

That actually happened here in the former Czechoslovakia during the Communist Era. In the early 1980s, the one and only toilet paper factory in the entire country was catastrophically damaged in a massive fire, rendering it inoperable for about eight months.

Beginning of this week: Trump: WV is doing something right. They have no cases, unlike NY.
WV today: 7 cases (exponential growth - doubling, doubling, and doubling again).

This disease is spread exactly like what the models predict if you don’t take action. It spreads and cases double periodically - exponential growth.

It’s a matter of time before the cases overwhelm local health systems.

It is inevitable without serious action. The GOP aren’t serious, so we aren’t doing nearly enough to bend the curve. Trump and the GOP are too interested in bailing out businesses to do what needs to be done. Even in NY and CA, there’s not nearly enough being done. Think about that - NY and CA are pushing towards total shutdown, and that’s not going to be enough. Imagine what it will do to those states that aren’t taking those actions, like FL.

There is something more to people when the leader of your nation or your organisation addresses you, rather than your flunkies (even the vice-flunky).

The Catholic Church is a good example. People go to Mass weekly, but if the Pope comes within a thousand miles they want to go to the Mass he leads. I’m not a Christian, but my understanding is every Mass is just as valid as any other Mass. What they’re there for is to hear the Pope.

Same with governments. The nation is in a trying time, the people want to hear from the President. It doesn’t even have to be a particularly informative speech or press conference, just assurance the government is looking out for the people and is doing all it can. These are hard times, but we will get through them as we always do with our ingenuity and skill.

Unfortunately, we have Donald Trump. So when Peter Alexander sets him up with the softball question that any leader (a mayor, a governor, &c) would get: The people are scared, what do you say to them? Trump attacks Alexander instead.

Look at all the responses to Junior’s tweet up there from wingnuts lining right up like good little apparatchiks to defend Trump. They, like he, are devoid of empathy. (See also the comments on that Reason article, the libertarians are even more horrid.)

I really do believe empathy is the thing which separates liberals and conservatives.

My buddy from 2 houses down just brought me a dozen eggs from his hens. Plus his brother told him to tell me he just finished up another batch of moonshine. I don’t even have to buy anything, just go over and hangout. With the bars closed I might just take a walk over to his place tonight :-)

One day we might get a forsenic accounting, and it’s going to be gross.

The way that this presidency links back to Deutschebank, and thus in turn to the same kind of practices detailed in the Panama and Paradise Papers.

It genuinely bothers me how little people think about how much terrible shit in the world is driven by white-collar crime.

Although it didn’t get great reviews, I though The Laundromat did a pretty good job of exposure. It’s based on the non-fiction book “Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite” by Jake Bernstein (which I have not read.)

Illinois Coronavirus stats
Thursday afternoon
3151 tests, 134 new cases, 422 total, 4 deaths
Friday afternoon
4286 tests, 163 new cases, 585 total, 5 deaths

Pretty good for that many new tests done. We’re in total lockdown, probably sooner than anywhere else in the US. Yep, the bitching is in full roar. Knock wood it helps.

Not a particularly sensible policy in the winter, but one I can get behind when the weather is fine.

Governor Pete Ricketts (R-NE) issued a couple more executive orders related to the Covid-19 epidemic:

Gov. Ricketts Issues Executive Order to Provide Relief to Restaurants and Bars during COVID-19 Emergency

The order waives payment of penalties for late payment of alcohol excise taxes, extends temporary licenses 180 days, and permits pizza parlours and restaurants to deliver beer (and in the case of appropriately-licensed restaurants) wine and liquor.

Gov. Ricketts Issues Executive Order to Temporarily Ease Driver and Vehicle Requirements

This order extends drivers licenses and registrations which expired on March 1 to thirty days after the order is lifted, including in-transit tags and titles. Interlock providers get a two-week extension for their customers.

Good evening Lizards.

Cleaned up my work building like we might not be back for a while, still planning on opening Monday but that is a lifetime away. I have good employees and even a better offsite boss/owner, they are all role models on how to act.

Stopped by the local brewpub on the way home for a drive through grab and go growler and dealing with that straw of reality made me break down and cry a bit about this whole thing for the 1st time.

Locking myself inside for the weekend except for a secluded walk/bike ride if weather allows. I have enough supplies and have to convince myself I don’t need to go out and get more.

Thank you Charles and all here for this place, stay smart.

Speaking of penguins, the MOST CLASSIC Stargate Atlantis fanfic:

archiveofourown.org
Pygoscelis (Or, a Gift of Pebbles)

There was a bright white light-

***

And Zelenka watched in open-mouthed astonishment, as two small penguins appeared where Dr. McKay and the major had been. The slightly shorter one gave a loud, angry honk, then immediately pinched the taller penguin in the neck with its beak, while slapping it repeatedly with its flippers. The taller penguin squawked, then yanked itself out of the other penguin’s beak, and fled from the room, the shorter penguin in hot, waddling pursuit.

They were surprisingly fast.

“Oh dear,” Zelenka said. Then he and Ouzakov raced after them.

***

“How do you lose a couple of penguins, anyway?” Jack muttered, glaring down at the lifesigns detector in his hand. It was impossible to tell which of the dots might be the birds, but Weir had purposely cleared everyone out of this area of the city, so right now there were only three white dots-himself, Ford and Stackhouse-slowly catching up to two white dots, which had to be the penguins. “We’re not talking leopards here. They waddle.”

“I don’t know, sir,” Ford said. He looked uneasy, either because they were sneaking up on something and he didn’t have his P90, or because in a few minutes he’d be trying to bag his superior officer in the net he was carrying. “Zelenka said they were really fast.”

“They’re penguins,” Jack said, feeling that it was explanation enough. He shook his head. “Go to Atlantis. See a new galaxy. Become a freaking zookeeper.”

I spoke to a client of mine today who lives a bit south of downtown Denver and has family in Montrose. He told me that he had been diagnosed with pneumonia in mid-February and was extremely, extremely sick. The only reason he wasn’t in the hospital on a ventilator is because his wife had oxygen at home. He recently had some chest xrays done. The radiologist said the images of his lungs matched almost identically to those of a COVID patient and that therefore strongly suspect that he had coronavirus. Also sounds like it went through his entire family—wife, daughter, granddaughter. This was 2-3 weeks before the first positive coronavirus patient was announced in Colorado.

Meet Your New Dad Marvin, Who Knows Kansas Ain’t Got Coronavirus ‘Cause Kansas Ain’t Chinese Like Italy! (goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

The chairman of the board of commissioners of Riley County, Kansas, has found the bright side of coronavirus, and that is why he is today’s America’s Bestest Smartest Elected Official Not Named Trump.

Commissioner Marvin Rodriguez (R) explained that everything is fine in Kansas — up to date, really — and they ain’t got no coronaviruses (they do) and he knows why. His comments at the board meeting were described by Usha Reddi, mayor of Manhattan, Kansas, which is in Riley County:

“I’m paraphrasing, but he said we don’t have a problem here because Italy has a lot of Chinese people, and we don’t have that problem here.”

Got that? ITALY has the CORONAVIRUS, because ITALY TOO CHINESE. As if the virus just sprouts up in people of Chinese heritage, regardless of where they’ve been or with whom they’ve been in contact.

Hey, do you get it now, assholes? THIS is why Trump calling it the “Chinese virus” is bad and racist and dangerous.

The so-called pro-life crowd continuing to prove they are no such thing.

Anti-Abortion Groups Are Still Holding Protests During the Coronavirus Outbreak (Vice)

They are going to continue with their “Forty Days for Life” protests at abortion clinics across the nation.

… But there is one group that is relentless in continuing business as usual: anti-abortion protestors.

Those belonging to one group in particular, 40 Days for Life, are committed to disrupting people who wish to enter reproductive health clinics through April 5, despite the possibility of contracting the potentially deadly virus or passing it along to someone else. The organization operates in hundreds of cities across the U.S. where it rallies people to show up in protest outside of clinics and dissuade pregnant people from continuing with their abortions.

“The abortion industry is still doing abortions…we are not going away unless we’re banned,” said CEO & President of 40 Days for Life Shawn Carney in a video titled “Coronavirus and Abortion” posted to the organization’s website on March 18.

The head of Lubbock Right to Life is an advocate of price gouging during emergencies, saying it’s the “fairest way” to distribute products according to the sacred dictates of the almighty market. I don’t know what he is doing now. Maybe his toilet paper and hand sanitizer stash will go up in flames when the FD demands 2 million dollars, in gold, to put it out.

Had not watched the daily Chinese Coronavirus press conference in a while and the one thing that struck me was how beaten down Pence and the other non people named Trump looked compared to earlier. I really want and need for them to succeed but they all looked like hell even compared to Monday.

Just called Wildcat Roofing and Firearms about the roofing job they did an estimate for after last summer’s hailstorm. They gave us an estimate of nearly $6,000, the insurance company said “okay” and paid us (the roof was less than a year old), but as of yet the roofer hasn’t set up an appointment to replace our roof.

Not there, so I left a message on their answering machine.

Riiight…..

So former Gov. Mike Huckabee normally wipes his ass with a corncob? And presumably doesn’t have to worry about flushing, since he’s taking his dumps in an outdoor privy?

TBH, for Mike Huckabee, it doesn’t strain the imagination too much….

Republicans fighting their real enemy, transparency.

“…At the Department of State Health Services, employees began teleworking Monday, and the agency minimized the number of people in the same room for critical meetings, according to the agency spokesman. Those working in the office have staggered shifts and are encouraged to keep six feet of separation between each other.

But just before Hahn lost his job Wednesday afternoon, he said there were more than 15 people his office, little social distancing and communal hand sanitizer was not available.”

re: #341 The Pie Overlord!

Memo: These jobs are never ever coming back to the US.

Not even a global pandemic will bring these jobs back.

Why? For the same reason they left in the first place. The billionaires decided it was cheaper to build stuff overseas and ship stuff back here just in time because that’s how they maximize their profits.

Just in time works great under normal circumstances, but fails in a pandemic.

We see this applied to everything from hospital beds available to ventilators and masks and tests. There’s not a surge capacity anywhere in the system. So the failure to act quickly when a pandemic occurs means you lost time that you never ever get back.

This wont change the minds of the billionaire class, because they can always find someone else to build stuff and buy stuff. You are just a statistic to them. They think they’ll outlive this.

I vote for stay home…no exposure you see. Myself, I’m home planning life changes which provide the greatest measure of safety from virus exposure for a period that could easily exceed a year. Gonna be tough as I’m not accustomed to hanging around the house. Reading is good and I’m behind in that area. Internet (don’t think I’d make it w/o lgf.). Exercise is covered cuz I’ll walk the neighborhood.
