Regarding the numbers out of China - second hand via my Spouse - Pol at 4chan has a new theory. Of course they do. But someone there claims to have run the numbers of their phone service subscribers. Since they use their smart phones for all sorts of business transactions and if there’s no activity in a few weeks, the account is presumed inactive due to probable death of account holder. The Pol Critter is claiming that there are millions of these inactive accounts now. And therefore, the official China number is grossly understated and that we’re looking at an even bigger catastrophe than we think we are. I don’t know whether to roll my eyes or check to see if there’s any validity to this. Much as I am not a fan of Pol, sometimes they get it right.

I’m not sure when /pol ever gets it right, other than blind chance.

How would someone on /pol have access to Chinese records of millions of inactive accounts in China? Why wouldn’t an inactive account also mean someone might be hospitalised for a different reason, travelling, not even a business account at all, &c.

I know. I am highly skeptical. But they were one of the first sources he told me about so I heard about Wuhan. Then I started looking for more reputable sites and found them. There is something hinky about there only being 3255 deaths. In a country as populous as China they’d shut down a quarter or more of the country?

It’s hard to believe some random 4chan outsider would have access to this information. Alternative theory, if true, government deliberately deactivated accounts because it wasn’t happy with information they couldn’t control — the people are alive, their phones aren’t.

Worldometer does a better job of most of this, but doesn’t do doubling (yet), which tells you how things are changing and lets you ‘guess’ where things may be, assuming you consider the population of the places you are comparing. Guessing may be better on an individual basis in regards to herd/mob behavior. If/when the US has 100k+ cases, or 200k, etc. the psychological impact will not be small.

Not much changed since yesterday. The US is accelerating (even with ‘averaging’) as testing catches up. Germany is very regular. Which is bad from a numbers perspective. However, from a % fatality Germany is doing very well. How/Why?

Below compares Italy, US, Germany on a per capita (cases per million) and % fatality per confirmed cases. How much of this is due to differences in testing, treatment regimes, stage of epidemic, age of population, etc confounds a simple analysis. In a week of bad news, at least the US is consistently closer to Germany’s fatality numbers than Italy. This will unfortunately likely change as the system becomes overwhelmed in Germany and here.

makeitstop  Mar 20, 2020 • 7:38:09pm

Long day…

We woke up early this morning and drove out to Lancaster County PA to lay my sister to rest. It was a small service, with 2 of my sister’s four kids (one son is severely immuno-compromised and unable to attend, and her only daughter passed away three years ago), and my remaining siblings (4 sisters, 3 older, one younger) and their families. My heart went out to my sisters. So much pain. We were once 9 in number, now we are 5. The reminiscences in the service were heart-rending, very emotional. It was difficult in that I wanted to hug everyone but couldn’t.

My sister was laid to rest on a hillside in farm country, on what turned out to be a beautiful day. That made it a little easier, seeing the sun break through the clouds. After the burial was done we all went back to the church for a lunch and told stories and laughed. When my wife and I got ready to leave, my sisters each came up and hugged me. I did need those hugs, but I really hope that we all survive them.

Driving back home into New York was surreal. My wife noticed Cuomo’s shutdown order while we were on the road in Pennsylvania, and the normally-clogged highways of Staten Island and Brooklyn (trust me, they’re always jammed) were nearly deserted by comparison, even by choke points like JFK. It’s good to see that people are taking this seriously and staying off the roads.

Once back on Long Island, we stopped at my BiL’s to pick up the dog, where we heard the news that someone in Pence’s office had tested positive for COVID-19. My first reaction was that it was another shiny object tossed out to the media to distract from the horrible response to the pandemic. They had CNN on, and sure enough it was all that Wolf Blitzer was talking about for most of the show that I saw. We’re in some hell of a spot in this country, where all trust and confidence in the government has been utterly squandered.

The only other story that even got a mention was the catastrophic projection of next week’s unemployment numbers. This will the final nail in the coffin for Trump’s reelection chances. One by one, all the things he’s claimed as proof of a great presidency have been shattered. And his reaction to these circumstances in the press briefings that he’s not smart enough to stay away from will continue to highlights just how far over his head he is, and always has been.

Trump is, electorally speaking, a dead man walking. All the tough talk and attempted spin is falling flat, and everybody - even the Red Hats - can see it. There is no saving this presidency, and Trump may be the only person in the country who doesn’t realize it yet.

Goin’ to bed. Have a good night, Lizards. Everyone stay safe.

The US and Germany don’t have as old a population as Italy. We don’t have as many instances of grandparents living with virus vectors (aka grandchildren). And we don’t embrace and kiss at every meeting and parting. Those might have an effect on how the epidemic unfolds.

Rocky Mountain National Park became the country’s first national park to close to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, two days after the park’s top boss suspended entrance fees to all national parks.

The park announced late Friday that it is temporarily closing, starting Friday night and lasting “until further notice,” following the request of Estes Park Mayor Todd Jirsa and the local health department.

The park had already closed entrances at Estes Park and to the west in Grand County early in the day Friday due to more than a foot of new snow. Earlier this week it announced the closures of facilities inside the park.

Sorry — Red Hats are as deluded as ever.

From FB comments of a MAGAt FOAF (friend shares our views — but her friend doesn’t): Trump has taken unprecedented action against the coronavirus, and his administration has been very aggressive with eliminating barriers to stem the flow of the virus. He banned travel from China the end of January and got scourged from the media for doing so. It was the right thing to do and other countries soon followed his lead by banning travel and closing their borders. Trump brought together top hospitals, expert medical professionals, and private businesses under his leadership to help develop a vaccine, implement strategic containment plans, and much more. He has lifted medical roadblocks to develop a vaccine sooner than normal, which is very close to being ready for the public, and is being praised by medical doctors and specialists. Trump has done more and faster than any other President in a similar medical crisis. The media constantly lies about what Trump is doing or has done and uses fear language, which is misleading and dangerous.

I really hope that the differences in age/culture hold true, for us. Northern Italy has/had a health system that ranked higher than most or all of the US. 9.9 vs 6ish for Boston (OECD?/WHO?). I didn’t extensively compare the rest of the US and wondered how much of the lower #s here reflect lack of access. The places I compared were rated much worse.

re: #36 Hecuba’s daughter

I had two of them, out of a crowd of about 30 people, tell me to my face that they will not vote for him again. Family members, who were so vociferous in their defense of Trump that I literally stopped talking to them for nearly two years. Take that as you will. I see it as a pretty big deal.

Wuhan Coronavirus Delays Spring Sports Panhandle Season (goes to the Sidney Sun-Telegraph)

All Panhandle schools, including Peetz, Colo., have been ordered closed for the next two weeks, with tentative plans to reopen Monday, March 30.

Since avoiding large gatherings and concentrations of people has been determined to be the most effective way of slowing and minimizing the effects of the Coronavirus, it has been decided to close schools and therefore delay the start of the spring sports season as a precautionary measure.

Israel’s secretive Mossad intelligence agency launched a covert international operation this week to fly in up to 100,000 coronavirus testing kits, although the effort may have been in vain as critical parts were reportedly missing.

Domestic news outlets, citing government and health officials, reported that the secrecy of the operation was because the kits were acquired from at least two unnamed countries that do not have good diplomatic relations with Israel, meaning the government could not openly buy them.

re: #67 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

I’m not encountering scientific illiteracy, but more basic problems:

Americans are hyper-individualist; people get very offended at the idea of systemic problems, and very frightened by the idea of systemic, cooperative solutions. The object is to win and get laurels…and the inverse is that if you “lose” it was somehow deserved. There’s people who just can’t conceive of the disease as something other than a personal struggle, and are confident that they’ll be fine and most people will be fine. These are generally folks mad at the idea that quarantine/social distancing inconveniences them. And then within that group there are people who specifically state that they understand the numbers, but make a eugenics-lite argument that really the deaths are just going to happen.

The specific variant of this that weirds me out is how much angrier people are the idea of market failure and job losses…because they value money…but lack the perspective to see that the market failure that would occur with a faster pandemic would be worse. I mean, if there were ever a moment to acknowledge that money is an agree-upon social construct to represent exchange value, now would be it. But ultimately people can more easily accommodate the idea of a plague than the idea that money ain’t really real….

We’ve got people stocking up on guns and ammo in my neck of the woods, too.

Partly, it’s the end point of gun culture telling people for decades that they can’t actually trust anyone.

But it’s also the equivalent of buying stupid amounts of TP: a way to feel less vulnerable, even though there’s no relationship between the threat and the soothing technique.

Lastly…re-framing coronavirus as a conflict in which an individual can be useful by positioning themselves as a protector wielding violence is a way of taking an inchoate existential threat and transforming it into a familiar comfortable narrative of heroic (violent) opposition to an unidentified malicious Them. Folks want their Gun Hero participation trophy, making them feel important, right when coronavirus is demonstrating that everyone’s vulnerable.

I’m not saying that ignorance is the cause in every case. Obviously there are millions of denialists and each one has a shade different motivation. It is a frequent one, though.
Coronavirus deniers and hoaxers persist despite dire warnings, claiming ‘it’s mass hysteria’

“Does anyone know anyone who has the coronavirus? Not just heard about them but actually know them,” the meme said in bold white letters on a blue background. “Statistically none of us are sick . . . yet concerts are canceled, tournaments are canceled and entire school districts shut down. Out of total irrational fear. If you have not previously feared the power of the media you should be terrified of them now. They are exerting their power to shut down America.”

I have seen this (likely Russian-sourced) meme on my own FB page. Just a week ago, by which time the mathematics were obvious, Texas radio yakker Robert Pratt was still making lengthy comparisons of the then-small coronavirus numbers with those for seasonal flu in an effort to “prove” that the whole thing was lefty-generated hysteria designed to undermine President Trump. This is a well-nigh universal trope among less educated people in this part of the country. These people do not make policy but they will go about their business with no concern for mitigation of a virus they think is not a problem, and they are spreading the virus in the process.

During the Great Recession of 2008, I read Gawker, specifically Hamilton Nolan. He wrote a series of blog posts profiling unemployed people.

Reading these posts, broke my heart into tiny pieces. The stories people told were sad and infuriating enough. But the comments!

So much whataboutism! Those who dared to tell their stories were blamed. It was their fault, a personal failure for each of them. Hamilton (HamNo) tried to explain that when so many people lost their jobs, it is senseless to blame the individual.

It was and is systemic. I thought it was systemic 25 years ago, when I heard many of the same stories from disabled people on a mail list I ran.

Here we are.

My honest, if tinfoil hat wearing, guess is that Republicans will try and figure out a way to cut checks for their base, not for every American. I’m similarly afraid that we’ll see aid—masks and ventilators and such—allocating differently to red and blue states.

It’ll be like x number of voting machines per county (even though the blue counties, where the cities are, have 20x more people).

If Montana, South Dakota, New York and California each get the same number of masks and ventilators, then we’re just whiny snowflakes looking for special privileges to suggest that maybe NY and CA deserve more.

For the First Time Ever, Sugar Valley Rally Cancelled (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Since the first rally in 1989, the Sugar Valley Rally has brought classic cars to the valley for a contest of calculated timed cruises over several days. The rally has been the longest, consecutive race. For the first time since it began, the rally will not take place. The Sugar Valley Rally Inc. Board of Directors announced Friday, March 20 that the 32nd annual SVR event for 2020 is canceled.

In a press release from Rachael Jenkins, event coordinator, she cited the decision as due to the “rarity of individuals and associations knowledgeable about sanctioning precision timed rallied.”

“Rex Gardner, who sanctioned our event through the Vintage Car Rally Association (VRCA), passed away late last year,” Jenkins said. “Since his passing, I have reached out to several other individuals in an attempt to reach someone willing to be our rally master and set up the course instructions. I had arrangements with a gentleman from California, who is associated with The Great Race, but he backed out last week.”

Further down the article, they say the current epidemic of Covid-19 aided the board in coming to that decision.

The Sugar Valley Rally is a big tourist draw here, drawing classic car enthusiasts from all over the country.

The Atlantic has a sober piece on how we can beat Corona virus:
https://www.theatlantic.com…

Short synopsis: social distancing buys us time while we ramp up testing. Once we get to the point where we can perform wide scale testing we can identify and quarantine every case. The infection rate slows and we can lift social distancing. That buys us time to develop a vaccine.

It *does* deliver first-class treatment to those who can afford it, so you can have the *best* treatment in the world if you are among the happy few (well insured and/or rich). But for emergencies and general public health? It’s sub-par.

remember that abc/ipsos poll two days ago “majority support trumps efforts” or some such thing?

we can now all sober up

electoral-vote.com this AM. Saturdays are Q&A days and there are two spot on:

read them both in detail. wont take but a minute.

plus a few good explanations about no, nada, zero, zip chance the presidential election gets postponed

snips:

— Truth be told, our answer to your question is that we don’t think his popularity is rising. Silver’s graph (which can be seen at the link above) reveals the same thing you see if you just look at the raw numbers: Trump’s approval rating has been shockingly consistent since the Oval Office address, varying from 43% to 46%….

…t’s not like he’s all of a sudden pulling numbers in the 50s or 60s. And that, in and of itself, is pretty bad news for the President. …If Trump isn’t even spiking right now, or is barely spiking, what will happen to him long term, as the costs of COVID-19, human, economic, and otherwise, become clear?

and

That said, working with the information we have at hand, we seriously doubt that Trump is going to get a bounce from all of this, even if the negative effects only last a few months. There are four reasons we think this way:

- His approval numbers, as we note in the answer above, aren’t really moving. If he’s not getting a bounce now, the odds are not good he’ll get one later.

- Presidential responses to crises tend to be defined by a very small number of very memorable moments. Think, for example, of George W. Bush, whose post-9/11 speech was the highlight of his presidency…t’s very possible that Trump has already given us the defining moments of this crisis, with the disastrous Oval Office address as the leading candidate, and that he will be as unable to change the narrative as Bush was.

- The number of historical examples where handling a crisis “saved” a presidency is vanishingly small…

- On the other hand, there have been many presidencies derailed by crises, particularly economic downturns. In fact, you can make the case that every single president in the 20th century who stood for reelection and failed was done in by an economic crisis…

The NYT runs a daft opinion piece on Trump:

Coronavirus Gives Trump a Chance to Make Good on His Promises

His vision of how to wield American power has a lot going for it in a crisis like this one.

Trump’s vision????? His “vision” is a narcissistic view of hyper-nationalism. Trump’s “vision” is why WWI came about, not to mention many other horrors.

Then I looked at the author, Christopher Buskirk, the guy behind “American Greatness”. Gag.

The NYT once again mainstreams neo-fascism.

There was discussion upstairs that China most likely has manipulated its number, an assertion I pretty much agree with.

This is anecdotal, but….

Wuhan resident Zhang Ruyi said public trust in the government is at a low ebb, because of attempts by local health officials to cover up the emergence of the new pathogen in December, partly by suppressing information and partly by classifying the surge of new cases as “pneumonia.”

“It’s funny, that,” Zhang said, adding that he is highly skeptical of the claim. “They’re not just lying now; they’ve been lying since the start, by classifying [COVID-19] cases under other diseases.”

“There are 60 million people in Hubei, and they have all just been left to live or die without any help,” he said. “It’s basically down to a person’s immune system.”

“They are saying that only a few thousand died here in Wuhan, but does that sound right?”

But Wuhan residents and citizen journalists have previously reported that funeral homes in the city were working round the clock to cremate bodies during the height of the epidemic there, while advertising to recruit manual workers to collect dead bodies from people’s homes by night.

Social media reports posted by volunteers showed that more than 20 patients were admitted to Wuhan Tongji Hospital on Wednesday alone with symptoms resembling COVID-19.

“There were more than 20 cases at Tongji today,” one volunteer posted. “Wuhan hasn’t dared to report them, because [local officials] are under [political] pressure.”

Calls to the medical and political departments of Tongji Hospital rang unanswered on Thursday.

Wuhan resident Liu Songyang said the city is still under an information lockdown, with ever stricter controls on public speech.

rfa.org

It’s entirely possible that a second wave is beginning in China - and especially now that Beijing has pretty much ordered everyone, “OK you bums, back to work!” I guess we’ll have to wait and see exactly how good their earlier containment measures were…..and whether Beijing can pull off total information suppression.

Okay, after mucking about 4chan to find out where they got that claim about cell phone accounts being dropped equalling a bunch of dead people, it lead to wingnut libertarian conspiracy theory site ZeroHedge.

Beijing’s Claim Of No New Infections Contradicts Reality On The Ground

It’s unreasonable to believe that they got to zero cases.
It’s also unreasonable to believe that millions of people are now dead.

The reality is somewhere in between. The number infected and the number dead are far higher than what they’re reporting to WHO. How to validate/verify?

Not through zerohedge, 4chan, or rando internet sites.

Are there mass graves - like what we see in Iran (and they’re also lowballing the cases/casualties)? Are there hospitals still overwhelmed? Or has China clamped down so hard that no news is getting out? Hard to say.

Then again, they’re also far more ruthless in quarantine efforts than anything contemplated in the West.

The City of Twin Falls says they’ll consider declaring a State of Emergency in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. During a meeting with the Twin Falls City Council on Monday, the Twin Falls City Manager Travis Rothweiler will ask the Twin Falls City Council to consider the declaration.

It needs to be done and done now. While we only have two (so far) confirmed cases the chances are better than ever of more occurring. Meanwhile, in Russia:

A reported sharp increase in pneumonia cases in the Russian capital and contradictory information around the issue is fuelling fears about the accuracy of official coronavirus data which remains much lower than many European countries.

Russia, which has a population of 144 million, has reported just 199 coronavirus cases and some doctors have questioned how far the official data reflects reality, given what they say is the patchy nature and quality of testing.

A sharp spike in pneumonia cases in Moscow, Russia’s biggest transport hub and a city with a population of around 13 million, has further raised doubts.

“I have a feeling they (the authorities) are lying to us,” said Anastasia Vasilyeva, head of Russia’s Doctor’s Alliance trade union.

The warning is coming following the announcement of the United States President, Donald Trump, that the drug can now be used to treat Coronavirus.

The Lagos State Government has warned against the unprescribed use of Chloroquine, an antimalarial drug, as preventive or curative drug against the Coronavirus disease.

The warning is coming following the announcement of the United States President, Donald Trump, that the drug can now be used to treat Coronavirus.

The announcement has been countered by the country’s Food and Drug Administration, which said it had not approved the use of the drug for treatment against Coronavirus.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, warned residents to avoid consumption of Chloroquine without prescription, noting that it could cause more harm than good to their health.

I wonder if it’s being studied as a possible covid-19 prophylactic, like for high risks folks, like healthcare workers?

re: #266 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀 No Capt’n😷Trips

Based on the statements from the professionals thus far, it seems that it is being looked at for therapeutic use, not prophylactic

Also, use as a prophylactic for large portions of the population would be a problem, as in the past blood donations were not permitted for a lengthy period after use

These RWNJ’s are gonna get people killed. This story is from a few days back:

Brazil confirmed its first coronavirus-related death on Tuesday, as President Jair Bolsonaro continued to deride efforts to mitigate the outbreak as “hysteria.”

A 62-year-old man, who tested positive for the virus, died on Monday four days after being admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo, officials said. The man, who suffered from hypertension and diabetes, caught the virus domestically, they said, suggesting community transmission of the virus in the South American nation.

After announcing its first case on February 26, infection numbers have risen to 291. The figure is expected to multiply in the coming days, but Brazilians continue to get mixed messages from the top.

In an interview on Sunday with CNN affiliate CNN Brasil, Bolsonaro called preventive measures, such as banning mass events, “hysteria,” and said that the economy came first. “When you ban football and other things, you fall into hysteria. Banning this and that isn’t going to contain the spread,” he said.

“We should take steps, the virus could turn into a fairly serious issue. But the economy has to function because we can’t have a wave of unemployment,” he added.

Hours before, Bolsonaro appeared to shrug off advice from his medical team to self-isolate after several members of his delegation to Florida tested positive for the virus. He instead joined a rally of supporters at a pro-government demonstration, shaking hands, bumping fists and slapping the backs of marchers who turned out to show their support for him amid a political spat with Congress.

He had initially urged supporters to call off the march due to coronavirus fears.

How do we know Trump’s done gone and fucked up testing?

Canada has run more tests than the US has. Pence is lying if he claims 400k tests were done, when every other reporting outlet indicates 1/4 that figure, and of the 100k tests, roughly 20% are infected. NY now tops 10k cases alone, and they’ve run about 40% of the tests in the country (25% positive rate).

States are rationing the tests because they don’t have enough. They can’t do the necessary quarantining because they can’t test those around the people who are sick, to try and nip this in the bud. Instead, states are going to start treating cases as presumptive covid19 if they show the symptoms so they can avoid running out of tests elsewhere.

NHS absorbing most private hospitals in the UK

The NHS has struck a deal with private hospitals to acquire thousands of extra beds, ventilators and medical staff to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

An extra 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 ventilators and almost 20,000 fully qualified staff will be available from next week.

Under the terms of the deal, the private sector will be reimbursed at cost, meaning no profit will be made for doing so.

And if you can’t pay for treatment, just bring a chicken…

2+ months into this and we are being treated a country’s executive (and assistant) unwilling to address a definite shortage in testing (either kits (denied) or ability to test) while they push various vaporware panacea “cures” and ask for the equivalent of a WW2 scrap drive to cover shortages of medical equipment. At the same time they refuse to activate powers they have to convert industry towards production of needed supplies and to coordinate state activities as well.

(Per Trump supporters losing their rose-colored glasses I think events going forward are going to do nothing but erode his support. He is at peak now - practically nothing he does will convert someone to vote for him that otherwise would vote for Biden. The reverse is however not true, Trump voters might convert to Biden - perhaps not in huge numbers, but probably enough to ensure he loses. And hopefully that brings the Democrats more Senate seats as well.)

Again, as noted yesterday, this is purely about appeasing his ego. He can’t run his Klan rallies or go golfing, so this is the only way to get the sort of attention he craves. In his mind, even bad attention is still attention when the alternative is sitting in his office and doing actual work.

re: #371 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

2+ months into this and we are being treated a country’s executive (and assistant) unwilling to address a definite shortage in testing (either kits (denied) or ability to test) while they push various vaporware panacea “cures” and ask for the equivalent of a WW2 scrap drive to cover shortages of medical equipment.

Like the Germans collecting winter clothing to send to the Eastern Front…

The lights are dark in Cleveland Park where fans once flocked to a beloved movie palace.

The historic Uptown Theater is closing for good on Connecticut Ave. in Northwest D.C.

Also, you have to consider that Trump sees these daily briefings as the only way he’s going to get any face time for awhile in this election season. Yeah, his campaign will run ads, but he has no rallies and no public events where he can glad hand the rubes. He’s effectively isolated from the public unless he commandeers these briefings.

Of course, and their god was powerless to stop him. Their god is a fucking wimp.
