Trump blathering on tv. So Pence clarifies we have a total of 113k ventilaters.

Day 7 of house semi-arrest: Disney+ is the shit. Yeah, we’re going to keep this.

Something comforting about watching stories about how parent dies and kid overcomes challenges with the help of furry animals or other inanimate objects, or parent dies and kid overcomes evil lord/lady with help of a furry animal or inanimate object. Or kid learns that they inherit the power from an inanimate object, which becomes a key McGuffin in advancing the story.

Seriously though, just take my money. At this challenging time, it’s pretty nice to settle in and watch some escapist stuff.

After all, Trump’s watching the US burn and he thinks this will be over in 15 days.

I’m still fucking crazed at what my wife went through Monday at her PA State offices. She took the week off, but will have to report on Monday.
The Union and the Wolf Admin are dancing in circles, and all they would have to do is buy laptops for “ESSENTIAL WORKERS TO WORK FROM HOME”.
And I was notified Friday to show up Monday morning via email to begin my Census training.
I was going to skip it, fuck them, I’m not risking 69 years of dodging bullets for nickles and dimes. BUT……I got a phone call at 11AM today that said the email was sent by mistake and to NOT go.
But my wife has to. And I am not at all sane.
And seeing an online local newspaper, if you could call it that, post a poll on how bad you think this is and over 40 fucking percent think it’s overblown?
Yeah. I’ll enter your house and sit at your table and pass papers back and forth. You bet.

NJ following NY with the “full shutdown” - cases up. Deaths up.

All residents must stay at home, and no employees can go to work anymore unless they are in the essential categories. All gatherings are also canceled indefinitely. Residents can leave their homes to buy essential materials, and can also go outside for walks but must maintain safe social distancing guidelines.

There are now 1,327 positive cases, and the death toll rose by five to 16, Murphy said.

“I take personal responsibility for the public health and safety of New Jersey,” he tweeted. “If you are unhappy about our aggressive social distancing measures, I’m sorry. But your safety is my highest priority.”

Agreed, that is some luscious tone. But now for the serious stuff:

Work Cell Phone Report:

It is alive. Not out of the woods, but alive. I thought that cell phones were ‘water resistant’ and to save on wipes or sprays, I chose to power my phone down, remove the extra battery pack, and wash in hot soap and water trying to not submerge. It was a great idea until it wasn’t.

Now it powers up and I can see a screen. It’s dim, but working. The water is inside but the corruption may not be permanent. Powered down, will leave off rest of the weekend. The Wife Unit informed me a Leave Phone in Bag of Rice to Dry protocol will not be approved and to suck it up.

As I’m sure you’re all concerned, I’ll report status at that time. Please respect the privacy of my family and I during this difficult time.

Florida has been among the most derelict in taking action. Some smaller states are pretty slow, too. But Florida is traveler-central which of course means people bringing in the virus and even more so taking it out.

But then again, Florida is where the likes of Trump, Limbaugh, etc. hangout.

Because the alternative is to admit fault in their own stars. So they’re stuck putting all the blame on China, accusing them of having “hidden” info from us such that we were “unprepared” for the virus to reach our shores. Or of having impaired the effort to find a cure/vaccine by being too secretive. Hell, it’s a wonder they’re not outright accusing China of having shipped the virus to our shores, though I’m sure they’re working on that angle with all possible haste.

Let’s look at history: Trump was a reality star, which meant that too many viewers thought they were watching the real Trump. He was able to say, do whatever he wanted and then the editors cleaned up his performance so the audience was presented a completely false image. As President, he thinks he can do the same — and that somehow his actual statements and actions can be overwritten by his staff and toadies, who lie and show deceptively edited clips to replace the truth with lies. That’s why he is so blithe about blatantly contradicting himself — he is confident that the viewers will see only the latest version and that past errors are eliminated by the new screenwriters.

Open it back up, remove battery and SIM card. Leave with open battery compartment facing down and at about 45 degree up angle for 24 hr. and you should be ok.
Since you had it powered down and the battery removed, circuit board damage “should” be minimal. General rule of thumb is that after washing down a circuit board, let it dry for 24 hrs. 36 if it has any transformers.

Fuel prices have completely collapsed as well due to the almost-worldwide travel bans/quarantines in place, and likely won’t begin to recover until well after the restrictions have been lifted - current prices in the DFW area are dipping below $1.50/gallon, and there are reports of prices below $1.00 in some places.

For electronics that have been submerged, my usual recommendation is to NOT dry the device immediately, but to remove the battery, and any SIM or SD/microSD first then flush the item while taking care to protect the screen with grain or isopropyl alcohol at 90% or greater content. If you have denatured alcohol, that should work as well - all of these (with the possible exception of denatured alcohol - depending on what additive it has to cause toxicity) are non-corrosive and will bind with water to evaporate cleanly. If in a pinch, you can break out 190-proof Everclear as well. When done, pat clean with non-treated tissue paper and let air dry.

All the more reason to stop covering it live and switch to recordings that can cut all the extraneous bullshit and focus on the facts.

juxtaposing biden and the dems in briefings about the virus are going to highlight that he’s not doing anything substantive. it’s gonna be crystal clear that he’s lost and clueless as he flails along.

from this

Most estimates peg the ventilators in the United States at roughly 100,000 to 150,000 units. See the study from last month: here

re: #148 jaunte

I’m going to go out on a limb and speculate that Bill never passed calculus.

It’s not calculus. It’s algebra, which is actually worse for the mouth breathing GOP set who think that anything like that is a Muslim conspiracy. /half.

Solve for X, where X is the cases you can handle without overburdening and collapsing health care system. Variables are beds, ventilators, doctors, cases, percentage of cases requiring hospitalization, and time to spread to 2x the cases.

Trump and GOP are failing on this basic math problem. They can lie, obfuscate, and deny it, but the cases will be tallied, and the news will be dire within weeks - even with the severe measures CA, NY and NJ put in place. Even these measures were too little too late. Zero leadership from Trumpworld and the refusal to aggressively test are entirely to blame.

That’s the difference between containing this and turning it into a global meltdown of epic proportions.

This disease isn’t the seasonal flu. In NY it’s 13x more deadly than seasonal flu. In Italy, it’s 70x. When it hits elderly populations, it’s the Grim Reaper. And it requires hospitalization for 15-20% of those who get it.

The GOP ignore all of this, and think this will be over in 15 days? They’re fucking nuts. There’s zero evidence to support that wishful thinking. There’s widespread outbreaks and insufficient testing to contain in all these hotspots.

Florida is particularly susceptible to a massive outbreak and a high death toll. All those adult communities and a fragile health care system are a recipe for a massive failure.

This is all predictable. It’s the math problem the GOP and Trump want to ignore. But the virus doesn’t care about Trump tweets or his bogus announcements of treatments with drugs that Nazis are touting on Twitter.

re: #183 I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)

The whole point of flattening the curve is to understand the health care system limits and to keep the surge case from overtopping it.

Right now, we’re on a path to blowing past the capacity of the health care system to handle cases. We’ll see it first in the NYC metro area, but it’ll spread elsewhere that hasn’t engaged in the testing and clampdown on activities.

The lack of testing is the culprit. Trump tied both hands behind our collective back and claims that this will all blow over.

Bingo. Season Flu cases are spread out over months, not a massive spike in a few weeks.

Seasonal flu deaths are also a fucking scandal given the lack of aggressive flu vaccinations to reduce the death toll. But the death rate from the flu are 0.1%.

Covid19 has a mortality rate in the US well above 1%. It’s 10x higher. Among the elderly, it’s going to decimate that population. And those who survive have lasting health issues.

Once you’re sickened on a ventilator, you’re not going to get well right away. More cases come in. They need ventilators too. The capacity gets reached, and the cases keep coming.

So, the Gish Gallop will turn and burn by claiming that this about China lying (and ignore the 6 weeks Trump wasted away claiming this was a hoax).

Last night’s update from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

It appears a Spring Breaker brought the disease to eastern Nebraska.

LINCOLN - A community transmitted case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified in Sarpy County today. The man in his 40s with underlying health issues tested positive yesterday and is currently hospitalized. Community transmission is when people have COVID-19 but public health officials can’t identify how or where they became infected. This is the third community transmitted case of COVID-19. The other two were in Douglas County.

Sarpy County also identified a travel-related case of COVID-19. The person is a man in his 20s who recently traveled to Europe. He is currently self-isolating and recovering from symptoms at home - sarpycasshealthdepartment.org

Five additional cases of COVID-19 were identified in three Nebraska counties.

A man in his 40s from Lancaster County who recently traveled to Colorado. He is self-isolating at home - lincoln.ne.gov
A woman in her 40s from Buffalo County who recently traveled and is currently self-isolating at home - trphd.org .
Three cases are in Douglas County. Two are men in their 40s and a woman in her 30s. All three of them had recently returned from areas in the Southeastern U.S. where COVID-19 is circulating - .

Note none of these are elderly people.

Updated guidance:

All returning travelers, from any international or domestic location, should limit public interactions, practice strict social distancing, and self-monitor for symptoms.

Nebraska Case Information

Total number of cases - 38

Cases that tested negative - 356

Has anyone done a comparison of the number of tests done for the virus vs the number of positives? Or maybe one where the cases are controlled for the number of tests? Because it seems to me that increasing the number of tests is going to increase the count, but the ratio might give some idea of the rate of spread.

Unfortunately, the reason why it’s having a measure of effectiveness in Israel for the time being is because of the fact that wide-scale testing and close reporting/monitoring means that EVERY SINGLE INFECTED PERSON is known, tested and accounted for.
Not so much the case in the U.S. I’m afraid…

Bergen County NJ - we have a bunch of world class hospitals. We have 195 cases. Total population: 905,000.

195 x 1024 (the doubling of cases every 3 days for a month): 199,680. That’s nearly 20% of the population sickened in 30 days. 15% of those require hospitalizations based on current trend: 29,952. Total critical care beds statewide: 4000. But the state believes it’s 123,000 beds short of peak demand.

But this is the problem in the US that isn’t even political: enough people do not like looking at systems, and a math breakdown of pandemics is systemic analysis, so they shut it out.

They might worry about the injustice of whether they’ll get a bed, or someone they care about get a bed, but can’t acknowledge the relationship between the systemic failure—bed count—and the individual crisis, because they believe themselves to be the exception, the deserving party.

I mean, that’s what my conversations (that have gone bad) are like…”I better be well served, but it’s bullshit to talk about the larger logic of the situation.”

NYT:

“Mr. Trump’s performance on the national stage in recent weeks has put on display the traits that Democrats and some Republicans consider so jarring — the profound need for personal praise, the propensity to blame others, the lack of human empathy, the penchant for rewriting history, the disregard for expertise, the distortion of facts, the impatience with scrutiny or criticism. For years, skeptics expressed concern about how he would handle a genuine crisis threatening the nation, and now they know.”

re: #226 Joe Bacon 🌹

I really wish it was just about Fox, but this is a deep cultural thing. Fox is a part of it…a formalization of the trend facilitated by bad actors…but the larger trend is there and not exclusively wingnut.

Like, there are a lot of folks who like “science” but are contemptuous of the idea of replication and review, because they view science only as a platform for heroic individual action. There’s also folks that fetishize “genius” and thus think a person who’s done one smart piece of science/engineering has authority to speak on all science intelligently.

And the people who think that meta-skeptical modes of inquiry, like social sciences in general or post-modernism specifically, can be dismissed simply because one is not supposed to question the cultural frame and base assumptions of individual thinkers. The idea that people do not think “rationally” in the Enlightenment modes, or that many people have unconsidered assumptions that bend their entire worldview, is viewed as hippy nonsense.

So not only do folks despise the idea of collective action, the possibility that thought is not truly individual, is seen as offensive, a priori wrong.

Which means there’s giant hole in how we interpret the world.

And also (a point I have seen little-to-no examination of), the COVID-19 virus seems to have also affected several “warm-weather” countries: this notion (and I have no idea where it came from) that the infection rate will somehow “abate with warm weather” seems as utterly unfounded as Trump’s “ miracle cure” - is it just wishful thinking. Or is it just more bulkshit spouted out by this incompetent Administration to try to obfuscate their own failures?

There are plenty of places that have just given up contact tracing for weeks now. I’m operating under the assumption that everyone is a potential vector (there were almost 70 new cases in my county today and I know for sure we aren’t testing everyone) and limiting exposure accordingly. We’re on week three of serious lockdown here - the stay-at-home orders are like …oh, well, okay, we’ll just keep doing what we’ve been doing.

…okay, minus the one bitching session I had last night because I can’t go get the one floss color I need at Michael’s. Guess I need to place an order at my favorite online delivery spot…

All fine! Us, the cats, the extended family on both sides. I texted my sisters back in Feb to stock up on toilet paper. I may have waved my degree at my grandparents to convince them that they really did need to stay at fucking home but it appears to finally have been successful. (I honestly don’t give a shit about my aunts and uncles as long as they’re not undermining my efforts with my grandparents because they’ve pretty much all bought into the RW nonsense and I have better things to do with my time. Also more likely to be productive.)

I’ve made homemade butter (I got a churn for Christmas!) and sauerkraut (mmm it’s so good) and fermented pickled onion (needs more spicing) and cleaned out and organized my pantry and spice cabinet (but okay, seriously, who needs three things of caraway seeds and why do I have three opened ones WHY I don’t even like them that much). I think next on deck is the garage and finishing the tax returns.

It’s the Republican view of how to distribute items, not thinking at all of how to make the greatest impact, but by a block grant:

While it may appear like the federal government is playing favorites, federal officials said their decisions were based on their best assessment of relative needs. HHS told states this week that it is giving out 25% of the stockpile to states according to population size, and sending another 25% strategically to states with the most severe outbreaks, which can be used for needs such as testing passengers on cruise ships brought back to shore. The remaining 50% will be held in “strategic reserve,” to be used if there’s a huge spike of critical needs around the country.

Yes but the answer is of course Trump.

My mom is actually making fabric masks for the family. Not as effective as medical masks, of course, but better than nothing and reusable, plus doesn’t take away supply from the medical personnel who need them more. We have a few from when we had to fly over Christmas right after mr. klys was diagnosed with the flu (second year in a row, yay) but we’re saving those for if they are absolutely needed.

I mean, hell, even just fabric from a t-shirt is like 70% effective, if I am remembering figures right. (And this may require layering, etc., etc., please do not quote me as a scientific resource.) But it’s pretty clear that something is better than nothing - and at the same time, the medical front lines need everything they can get, so it’s better for those of us not on those front lines to give them the super-effective stuff and make do with the somewhat less effective stuff.

I’m in search of 740!

The thing with shipping is that I’m going to add probably $70-80 worth of stuff to make the shipping costs worthwhile. >.> Currently thinking about just filling in all the holes in my DMC collection. And also another few bead kits.

Sorry, no joy. You’ll have to order lots and lots of floss and beads.
It’s the right thing to do says the woman who just ordered $120 worth of dyed wool and silk roving. The excuse is that we’ve had to cancel the regional weaving conference so I’m trying to support the vendors who were going to come.

Hey, Klys, good to see you again!

Another damn day. I did my reading, spent far too much time chasing covid-19 stories online, and took my aerobic walk. Healthful for the soul as well as the body — there are always a few walkers or joggers around, and it’s nice to see people around, even at a distance. That, with a stop to pick up takeout on the way home, is becoming my normal routine.

Tomorrow at midnight, it will be fourteen days since I flew in from Miami — no telling, of course, how widespread the virus was when I was (briefly) there. Still feeling feverish all the time, thermometer still stubbornly reading “normal.” Embarrassing.

As long as they let us out to walk, I can do this indefinitely, but I hope the rules are relaxed a bit come April 7, as this is already getting old.

Jacksonville/Duval County had an 11 yr old test positive in last 24 hrs

But doing that 2 week lockdown is an admission that NY, CA, and those that followed those states were right to do so. It’s an admission he fucked up (with not so many words).

It’s the right thing to do, but will he actually do it? Who the hell knows because who is he listening to at this point?

For as much as I dislike my governor (R-Ameritrade), he grasped the math problem in Nebraska immediately, in rapid succession closing bars and restaurants, banning groups over ten, &c. He did not overrule our public health district here when they basically quarantined all of us.

He at least understands how profits and capitalism work. A little pain now is a whole lot better than economic collapse.

re: #163 Vote Cthulhu - No longer the greater evil!

I as a general rule don’t have to deal with electronics that have been “submerged” in liquid. Just spilled upon. Wash and dry. Cell phone, remove battery and Sim, let dry. 50/50 on recovery. LCD/Touch Screens screens on the other hand are a totally different animal.

We’re on the path to be the world’s worst as far as Covid-19 is concerned, because yahoos in this country think they are above it all:

Police close San Antonio Aquarium twice on Saturday for violating emergency declaration

San Antonio Aquarium was ordered shut twice on Saturday by the Leon Valley Police Department after officers found the business open to the public despite an emergency declaration amid the coronavirus pandemic, police said.

The aquarium had received multiple warnings from the police but still had refused to close, officials said.

Police were first called to the aquarium early Saturday to find the aquatic-theme business open to the public with multiple patrons inside - violating Texas, Bexar County and Leon Valley emergency declarations.

The owner, who was not present Saturday, had ignored their warnings and refused to shut down the establishment, police say. So officers issued the aquarium a citation and ordered the manager to immediately close.

Later Saturday afternoon, Salvaggio said officers returned to find more than 15 people at the aquarium for a birthday party, as well as ten employees.

Police again cited the manager and cleared out the aquarium.

That manager should be jailed.

Florida has very strict laws on price-gouging, due to frequent hurricanes. If that person was identified, she will be arrested.

It took me a little searching and I found the original insert from 2005 (I did not think they were that old) and it does not have an expiration date. I still say it is a sick joke.

Well, Bill, I don’t think the flu cases have disappeared just because Covid-19 is here. Now we have both needing medical care and the system is overwhelmed.

I was just about to post something to that effect, but you put it better than I would have.

Could be. Just noting that there is a national epidemic of unnecessary expiration dates.
But then I’m something of a rebel when it comes to instructions. When I shampoo my hair I just lather and rinse. I do not “repeat.”

Too late to fix it now for me. Time has expired.

Perhaps our esteemed host Mr. Johnson can do that for me.

I was so bad at Calculus that they finally developed a Calculus for Liberal Arts Morons version that those of us who’d failed it multiple times could handle. It was mostly several of us moving from one side of the room to the other while keeping an egg perched precariously on a teaspoon.

I was a liberal arts moron, but I loved calculus. First time in my math-studying career that something made sense (after Euclid, anyway).

My doctor told me recently that I don’t have to pay attention to expiration dates on medications unless they are in a light proof bottle or need to be refrigerated.

Tennessee has Nashville a desirable tourist destination. Nowhere in KY I want to go. (Just kidding!). And of course, all the idiot spring breakers in Florida going to spread it far and wide. Leadership!

I wonder how Ken Ham’s Ark Encounter and Creation Museum in Williamstown, Ky. are going to do in the midst of this.

Utah Outcasts has a supporter in Williamstown who posts to them monthly the safety tax numbers (a tax of a quarter is assessed to each ticket sold) so they have accurate numbers on how many visit his boat.

They have taken up putting expiration dates on everything (baby car seats for example.) They could well have an expiration date, but I can’t imagine it would matter.

The elastic loses elasticity, and the mask has to fit tightly. If the material it’s made of loses “suppleness,” that might be an issue.

True. I suppose it might depend on materials and circumstances.

The Ark Encounter and Creation Museum have shut down until at least April 2. I’ve been using Ken Ham as an example to taunt Kent Hovind and his fifth-rate Dinosaur Adventure Land in Repton, Alabama into closing. (In the meantime, DAL had a drowning last Sunday, but the state or county has not stepped in to shut the place down, and Hovind deliberately runs it without any sort of insurance whatsoever.)

I’m going to go out on a limb and speculate that Bill never passed calculus.

I had an asshole 8th grade algebra teacher who destroyed any interest I had in math. Prick continually insulted and humiliated me in The Class From Hell, left me with a lifetime hatred of math teachers. Still can’t do any math without an iPhone…

re: #284 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I mean, hell, even just fabric from a t-shirt is like 70% effective, if I am remembering figures right. (And this may require layering, etc., etc., please do not quote me as a scientific resource.) But it’s pretty clear that something is better than nothing - and at the same time, the medical front lines need everything they can get, so it’s better for those of us not on those front lines to give them the super-effective stuff and make do with the somewhat less effective stuff.

The Colorado Quilting Council put out a message on Facebook asking members to make masks, and linking to the pattens. As said, better than nothing for those not on the very front lines. Knowing some of these ladies and their stashes, there are going to be some colorful cotton masks out there soon. (Probably should try my hand at it, I kept Mom’s vintage Singer and more fabric than I really should have. But have to rearrange to get to them.)

re: #358 garzooma

I’ve been using the worldometers site, and it has a good chart for the US over time (or any country). And they have a table for individual states. What I wasn’t able to find was a chart like the US chart for individual states.

If I am remembering correctly, you can “zoom in” the world map of “hotspots” —to nation-state level, and to state/province level. I’ve done it for USA/Virginia/MyCounty(or city). It takes a little practice to master the zooming and scrolling, but the finer-grained data was appearing, as of a few days ago. I’m just not sure which website it was.
