Part of it is because of conservatives and love of business, the other part is Florida only has a sales tax to fund state government. Kill the beaches, you kill a majority of the state’s funding.

Trouble with tracking the dead is that unless you can tie it to a diagnosis before death, it can be “hidden” by putting “pneumonia” or “respiratory failure” or some other such code word so the numbers aren’t real. Rumor has it that is what Russia is doing to keep its C19 numbers low.

Could be. Just noting that there is a national epidemic of unnecessary expiration dates.
But then I’m something of a rebel when it comes to instructions. When I shampoo my hair I just lather and rinse. I do not “repeat.”

Shampoo years ago only gave “lather and rinse” as the instruction for use.

“Repeat” was added simply as a marketing ploy, to get you to use your shampoo faster, so you will buy more.

My mother, for years, added ketchup to prepared, canned baked beans. I never knew that - I was so scared of them until I got to college and had an un-ketchuped can once. And then I came home and watched her “prepare” them, and pitched a fit.

I love my mom, but that Iowa high school and its home-ec curricula warped her sense of taste sooooo badly.

Local businesses optimistic during coronavirus pandemic (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Precautions to limit the spread of coronavirus are having a wide-ranging impact on our economy as markets slow down and businesses feel the pinch throughout their operations.

Small businesses in rural Nebraska are no different. One local business leader sees some positives in the current turmoil.

“This is a stressful time for the local business community,” Angela Scanlan, owner of Cappuccino and Company and a member of the Downtown Scottsbluff Association, said. “It’s also encouraging to see people coming together. Local businesses are working overtime to make things as easy as possible for their customers.”

With this very boring title:

Memorandum on the Delegation of Functions Under 31 U.S.C. 5302 (goes to the White House proclamations page)

The President under the authority of that law has delegated to Treasury Secretary Mnuchin to spend $50,000,000,000 from the Exchange Stabilization Fund.

That is about half of the fund. It’s purpose is to influence foreign currency exchange rates.

The authority of the President to bypass Congress and authorise expenditures to manipulate foreign currency and gold exchanges is explicitly spelt out in the 1934 Gold Reserve Act.

Understood, but he’s getting more and more desperate. A rat in a small space becomes a more vicious rat by nature. Drumpf is more and more hemmed in by reality.

His recent claim that “I always knew it was a pandemic” was just a pathetic admission of a complete inability of accepting what was staring him in the face, an inability to accept reality. He was briefed on it. He didn’t act.

His worldview is solely about him, and anything negative that intrudes upon it is alien, uncomfortable, and not worth action.

Now he has to deal with a Black Swan (or a Grey Rhino- I prefer that term, we certainly knew that at some point this was coming, and it’s not a Giant Space Rock or an alien invasion), and he is completely incapable of even understanding what is happening around him. It’s inconceivable to him how his Beautiful Stock Market gains have disappeared, how his beautiful economy has collapsed, and how his beautiful, perfect vision of MAGA has turned to dust.

Now, he is at his most dangerous. Now, if he lashes out, he can really fuck the dog.

I’m off to bed and my nightmares. It’s a scary time for America and this maniac POTUS is at the top of the list.

My wife bought a new six-quart pressure cooker, which was delivered a few days ago.

She is starting it on its maiden voyage with some of the huge stockpile of dried beans we have.

Our old Forties pressure cooker blew out its safety plug centre. After some searching on-line, she was able to find a replacement plug.

Now we have two pressure cookers to make endless beans.

She also was rummaging around in the freezer—we have not eaten any red meat since December (long story involving VA testing I won’t go into here), and turned up a bunch of steaks and lamb chops.

I would starve to death without a pressure cooker. Dried beans are real survival food, eternal shelf-life and much better than re-constituted freeze-dried glop at a small fraction of the cost. You could live a long time on beans and rice, especially if you have enough barbecue sauce, ketchup, and the odd green stuff.

Yes, it is. Once the virus is loose in a closed environment, everyone who is at genetic risk to get a bad case, will. And most will die. It’s 1918 all over again, when we had +/- 500,000 deaths in October.

There are actually a couple of significant differences between this and spanish flu, both positive and negative.

The big thing spanish flu had in it’s favor was WW1, which combined massive amounts of enforced travel, tight concentrations of people living in poor sanitation and extremely stressful conditions, and possibly the wide spread presence of mutagens in the form of rampant levels of chemical warfare. Also a mostly rudimentary understanding of virology in general.

Covid, on the other hand benefits from the greater ease of travel in general, both within and between countries, higher population densities in general, and the fact that the governments of the world’s three most powerful nations seem to be seriously invested in fucking things up as much as possible.

If anyone is interested in the 1918 outbreak, this is actually a good primer if you can rise above the adorable animations (which are adorable):

To the surprise of perhaps absolutely no one:

President Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday, March 20th, that he may undergo a third test to determine if he is infected by the novel coronavirus, and mentioned the chance that he had already been infected.

So far, 22 people who took part in Bolsonaro’s trip to the United States earlier this month tested positive for the virus.

“I’m fine. I’ve been tested twice. Maybe I’ll take one more test. I get medical advice,” said Bolsonaro, outside the Alvorada Palace.

Bolsonaro still raised the possibility that he had been infected by the virus …

riotimesonline.com

The article itself is one of those “for premium members only”; the blurb I posted here is sufficient enough to convey the information.

Yep…..Bolsonaro may well have C-19. There have been instances where people have tested negative, only to be re-tested later on and then testing positive, so I’d say it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Depending upon who you ask, we either make everything too sweet, too spicy (or, if you ask India, not spicy enough), too salty, we deep fry everything, we have an unhealthy fascination with cheese and mayo, our serving sizes are ridiculous, we eat too many processed foods, and (most importantly) we slap “authentic” on anything that seems the least bit “foreign” to us (ex: Tex-Mex sold as “authentic” Mexican cuisine).

People sort of noticed that there were almost 40% more deaths due to pneumonia in Russia this year than in the same period last year. The thinking is that Putin is trying to shove this under the carpet until he can have his referendum in late April to change the constitution to let him be president for life, basically. Meanwhile, rich Russians are buying up ventilators.

And the exception is that we don’t look totally weird to the English and Welsh (more so to the Scots), because they share most of our obsessions and they cook as much Indo-Brit curry as we do Tex-Mex (with the corresponding issue that anyone who can’t handle the already-dumbed-down spice of that passes on about 10% of the country’s food). I think they also have got back to “American-style” serving sizes since that’s where we learned that from in the first place (and which is the major difference between English/American and French home cookery, since the French are just as obsessed with cheese as both).

[The reason for ‘got back’ being that ‘rationing hit English portion sizes for a good amount of time after it stopped actively being a thing, because Mum got out of the habit of dishing it up as big”]

The Bing tracker now shows the Diamond Princess death count at 9, out of 712 cases.

Given this is a known, countable population, this suggests that the CFR for that population is 1.3% . Now cruise ship populations will tend to be older than a nation’s average age. Still, there are 136 active cases from the Diamond Princess, and given the dates of infection, if these people are still not recovered I wonder how many of them will die from this.

Also remember that these people are getting a lot of attention by Japanese health care. Many people in the world will not be so lucky.

America, land of people who think they are special…

New Orleans is turning out to be an outbreak hotspot. Given it is one of the leading party cities (right up there with Las Vegas), no one is surprised.

And of course:

Dr. Rebekah Gee: ‘Louisiana set to become epicenter of Covid 19 epidemic in part because of Mardi Gras’

Louisiana is set to become an epicenter of the COVID-19 epidemic in part because of Mardi Gras, according to Dr. Rebekah Gee, CEO of the states flagship university health system.

“In New Orleans alone, there were 1.4 million visitors who came to the city for Mardi Gras and at that time we didn’t know the virus was circulating.”

[…]

Mardi Gras was on Feb 25th.

The WHO had issued its thirty-fifth sitrep by Feb 24th.

In which the US was identified as having cases. Some of whom the origins of infection were unknown.

Yes, state health departments (outside Washington State) may not have been so keen on thinking about this virus.

But… if Trump hadn’t been such a malicious incompetent in dismissing the team at the NSC that tracked these things, and if Trump hadn’t kept downplaying the seriousness, and instead had acknowledged what the WHO already knew - that this was an epidemic spreading rapidly around the world - then perhaps the US state health offices may have been paying more attention.

re: #112 Dread Pirate

I got my wife a Ninja Foodi but she’s terrified of using the pressure cooker feature. She finally used it this week to make corned beef and cabbage. It came out well and I think she’ll use that more often.

I love the Instant Pot we have. Like your wife, my wife is still kinda reluctant to attack it. I took to it like a duck to water. As has been mentioned, dry beans are great from one. No soaking overnight and ready within an hour. I have experimented with all kinds of things in it, some came out great, some not so great, but nothing terrible so far (fingers crossed).

Couple weeks ago wife was doing sausage and cabbage and told me to get the crock pot out (it is fairly large and in the lower cabinets). I told her to try the Instant Pot which has a crock pot (slow cook) feature. She said she would rather use the old trusty crock. I decided to look up the slow cook feature online to see what people were doing with it. Seems that the standard configuration of an Instant Pot isn’t really well suited for slow cooking. Locking the cover doesn’t let any steam release and affects how things cook. There are substitute lids that have a ventilator on them that take care of this problem from what I could find. I may have to pick up one.

Kinda glad she turned down trying it. If things didn’t come out as expected it might have turned her off totally from using it for anything else. Guess I’ll have to pick up one of those lids made special for slow cooking, then I’ll get her to try it.

She also complains it is too large (8qt). Got daughter a 5qt which she thinks would be a better size for us now that we are empty nesters, and she is right. But we already have the one we have (a christmas gift from her sisters and mother a few years back). We’ll cross that bridge later. I would just like it if she would do a little experimenting with the one we have.

We have two. The Lux Mini 3 qt and the Duo Evo Plus 60 6 qt.

We got the 3 qt first as we didn’t know if it was worth all the hype (it is) and then picked up the 6 qt to do ham, cornish game hens and some of the larger cuts of beef that just wouldn’t fit in the 3 qt.

Before you spend money on a new lid, check and see if the lid from your slow cooker will fit on it. The one from ours fits on ours reasonably well.

The ‘cure is worse than the cold’ talk is firing up. Though we have lots of time to spare, let’s cut to the chase. Leaving the obvious morally depraved questions aside, what is the economic impact of doing little or nothing?

Imperial College model showed 4m in the US dying in 3-6 months with a crushed health care system. 2.5m dying from virus and 1.5 dying indirectly from the crushed HC system.

Poof! That’s 1% of the workforce that just disappeared in one quarter. With a crushed health care system.

I invested too much time virtually debating someone whose position was that because the most vulnerable groups were a small percentage of the total population, the best response was to tell the elderly and infirm to take care of themselves via self-isolation and the like, while everyone else went with business as usual. I didn’t have any projections, but I tried to explain that, aside from totally ignoring our responsibilities under the social contract, it was insane to believe that we could neatly silo these impacts and that the “healthy” folks wouldn’t feel repercussions. The impact on the health care system was my number one example.

Time to watch “Dark Shadows.” Up to the point where Burke Devlin has run into Laura Collins, trying to clear his manslaughter conviction and implicate Roger Collins.

In the meantime Roger is trying to prevent his son David from learning his mother has returned to town after Roger had her committed to a sanitarium during the manslaughter trial to prevent her from testifying.

Just wait. When 1968 rolls around, there’s a rumor about how something is mutilating animals, and then Barnabas shows up as a distant relative from England, back to restore the old Collins house. It gets creepy as hell, especially because Barnabas is an absolutely unapologetic sexual predator.

The Deputy Governor and his driver are quarantined at Mbagathi Hospital, Nairobi. The detectives, however, are tracing all the people he came to contact with in the past four days.

Detectives in Kilifi also investigates the offices he went after he failed to quarantine at home. They also investigate the driver where he went and which people he picked.

Those numbers now include some people who caught it weeks later from spouses or people traveling with them, so that accounts for some of the unresolved cases. But as I look at the whole list from everywhere, it looks like they’re very slow in counting and recording who has recovered. Understandably, since I assume you’d need a serum test, and other things are more important.

Late to this party, but I used to make my own ketchup. It was totally different, not that sweet, LOTS of flavor. Since I stopped, I haven’t eaten “store-bought ketchup.” Yuck.

Sadly, it looks like Evangaline Lilly is an idiot, and refuses to do any of the self-quarantining: usatoday.com:

Despite the global coronavirus pandemic, the “Lost” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp” star said she’s continuing her normal routine instead of self-quarantining to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“Just dropped my kids off at gymnastics camp,” Lilly, 40, wrote on Instagram Monday. “They all washed their hands before going in. They are playing and laughing.”

Lilly’s decision to send her children to an extracurricular activity sparked some backlash from fans, who questioned her decision not shelter in place like many people globally.

“No Corona House Arrest?” one fan asked. Lilly replied, “Not for this family.”

Lilly defended her stance in replies to the comments, downplaying the deadly virus as a “respiratory flu” and perhaps even a political ploy: “There’s ‘something’ every election year,” she wrote.

“Where we are right now feels a lot too close to Marshall Law (sic) for my comfort,” Lilly wrote, referring to martial law, the replacement of normal civilian functions with temporary military authority by a government.

Oh, Florida:

Jacksonville-area coronavirus updates: Nassau County beaches closed

March 22, 12 p.m.: During a press conference in Miami, Governor Ron DeSantis said as testing as increases, Florida has seen more overall cases. However, he added that the vast majority of people are testing negative.

DeSantis is so desperate not to have this thing blow up in his face and have his anti-government religion exposed as detrimental to public life.

To whit:

March 22, 6:00 a.m.: Nassau County beaches have closed. This comes after the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office announced the impending closure in a Facebook post Saturday. The executive order from Nassau County Emergency Management said, “The increased pedestrian traffic, due to other beach closures, presents an enforcement issue as to gatherings and other CDC, Gubernatorial and Presidential guidelines.”

Exactly as expected. A community here or there closing beaches is not enough, as Americans-who-are-special just move around.

Which is why DeSantis needs to to close down the whole state. But he refuses.

Today we are switching our coverage of Donald Trump to an emergency setting, Jay Rosen, pressthink.org

Even this far into his term, it is still a bit of a shock to be reminded that the single most potent force for misinforming the American public is the current president of the United States. For three years this has been a massive — and unsolved — problem for the country and its political leadership.

He lists principles, including:

* We will not cover live any speech, rally, or press conference involving the president. The risk of passing along bad information is too great. Instead, we will attend carefully to what he says. If we can independently verify any important news he announces we will bring that to you— after the verification step.

My English nephew posted that after getting home from a ski trip in Switzerland, he came down with a bad case of “pneumonia”. He didn’t qualify for a test initially because he hadn’t been to a hot zone. They finally did test him, but the NHS lost the test, so he may never know it it was coronavirus or not. He has fully recovered, but it was bad, not a mild case at all.

The Soviet system was good at one point but was in decline, I cannot imagine that it has improved considerably.

If the government is forcing doctors to enter ‘pneumonia’ rather than covid-19 as the cause of death, the medical system is horribly compromised on top of any quality issues they may have.

How the wealthy are going to get everyone killed (nypost.com):

… “There’s not a vegetable to be found in this town right now,” says one resident of Springs, a working-class pocket of East Hampton. “It’s these elitist people who think they don’t have to follow the rules.”

It’s not just the drastic food shortage out here. Every aspect of life, most crucially medical care, is under strain from the sudden influx of rich Manhattanites panic-fleeing, bringing along their disdain and disregard for the little people — and in some cases, knowingly bringing coronavirus.

The Springs resident says her friend, a nurse out here, reported that a wealthy Manhattan woman who tested positive called tiny Southampton Hospital to say she was on her way and needed treatment.

The woman was told to stay in Manhattan.

Instead, she allegedly got on public transportation, telling no one of her condition. Then she showed up at Southampton Hospital, demanding admittance.

“Someone else took a private jet to East Hampton and did not tell anybody ‘til he landed,” the resident says. “That’s the most horrendous aspect. The virus is already here, and we don’t have any medical resources.”

“We’re at the end of Long Island, the tip, and waves of people are bringing this s-t,” says lifelong Montauker James Katsipis. “We should blow up the bridges. Don’t let them in.”…

Here’s something that never gets mentioned or seen in coverage of the Hamptons, whether it’s the news or gossip columns or “Sex and the City” reruns: There are actually poor people who live here. There are three trailer parks (one, of course, is already going luxury). There are food pantries for the needy, and that includes schoolkids.

Normally, the haves and the have-nots converge only in summer, and everyone plays their parts. No more..

The offseason, October through June, is sparsely populated and can be very isolating. During that time, local grocers only stock food and supplies for a severely reduced population. There is no FreshDirect, no Whole Foods, no door-to-door food delivery.

Most year-rounders don’t have the ability to drop, as The Post reported, $8,000 in one shot at gourmet grocery Citarella, or import hundreds of pounds of meat as another overlord just did, then stash their hoard in the extra brand-new freezers they just bought…

TEXAS HOSPITAL CHILD ABUSE CASES RISE IN COVID-19 OUTBREAK: ‘IT’S HARD TO THINK THAT IT’S JUST COINCIDENTAL’

Yesterday I started reading Pale Rider by Laura Spinney, an account of the 1918 pandemic. She reports that during the pandemic the New York Public Schools stayed open because they thought the children would be safer in the classroom, where they could be regularly checked by health professionals, than at home, where they could pick up the virus crammed into the tenements where they lived, or sent to play out in the street, or sent out to work in sweatshops.

School was a refuge for some.

When my mom was a student teacher in the late 1950s, the teacher she worked with gave her a piece of advice that she based her career on: treat your classroom like it’s the best place your students will ever be because for some of them it is.

My mom loved her students (she taught kindergarden most of her career). As dementia took her, her love of her students was one of the last things she could coherently talk about.

To no one’s surprise:

A group of Florida college students traveling together on spring break have tested positive for the novel coronavirus

Four students at the University of Tampa in Tampa, Florida, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to a Facebook post made by the university on Saturday night.

The students with other classmates during the university’s spring break, according to the university’s statement. While three of the infected students have returned to campus where they are “self-isolating”, one student did not, the university said.

The university did not say how many students were traveling with the four infected students and whether they had been tested for the novel coronavirus. It has not been yet confirmed if the infected students were traveling together in the state of Florida or if they were traveling elsewhere when they contracted the virus.

I wonder how many college students have spread SARS-Cov-2 around this country in the past week.

Czech Republic is still 0 fatalities, over 1000 infected.

The story that seems to be emerging is that if a locale has sufficiently aggressive means of testing, treating, and isolating cases then the mortality can be kept low.

But if any of those requirements can’t be met, then the mortality easily rises to 3% or beyond.

My soapbox on this from the start has been: the quality (and quantity) of heath care available determines if you live or die.

Some places (TN, FL) don’t seem to care so much about public health. Other places (Iceland, Faroe Islands, Singapore, etc.) do.

It was barely a month ago that $2 Trillion price tag on a Universal Health Care system were being derided as being enormously too expensive. Let that sink in.

Every dime spent via this bill should be public.

I’m beginning to think that not a single cent should go to anyone other than a worker earning less than 200,000 per year. Otherwise, we are heading for a repeat of the 2008 bailout and the 2017 tax bill with most of the money going to executives, dividends, and stock buybacks. Yes — some retirees rely on those dividends so there should be a way to address those needs. But any plan designed by Republicans is directed toward the greedy and not the needy.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKRC) - Gov. Mike DeWine has signed a statewide “stay at home” order for Ohioans.

“There is nothing in the order that we haven’t already been talking about. There is nothing in this that I haven’t been asking you to do for the last few weeks.”

The order goes into effect 11:59 p.m. Monday night and stays in effect until April 6.

The Ohio Department of Health announced there are now 351 cases of coronavirus in Ohio with three deaths.

Additionally, the virus is present in 40 counties and 83 people have been hospitalized.
