Rand Paul Has Coronavirus, After He Mocked Concerns and Voted Against Emergency Funding

Politics • Views: 26,286

The title says it all, and I hope the American public is paying attention to the way the Republican Party is behaving during this crisis. Because Rand Paul isn’t the only hypocrite, and others are trying to exploit the outbreak of coronavirus by grabbing the power to arrest and detain people indefinitely without a trial.

Note that Rand Paul is asymptomatic at this point, which makes it very likely he spread the virus to other Republicans.

UPDATE at 3/22/20 12:27:22 pm by Charles Johnson

And now, Rand Paul’s father, dependably loony tunes as always.

Repeating myself from downstairs:

Rand Paul is young enough, and presumably healthy enough otherwise, that Covid-19 may not be seriously detrimental to his health.

If so, once he comes out of quarantine I expect him to champion that if he can beat the coronavirus without a government handout (ignoring that he gets healthcare as a Senator) then all Americans can.

Yeah I can totally see him doing something like that. He’s always been an ideologue first and leader last. His father fits that label too.

IRS has been hollowed out.

Social Security offices have been closed to the public.

State offices have been contracted out or are now online.

Lots of spin going on today, about Fauci’s statement when asked about his differences with Trump.

A lot of spin.

Fauci couched some criticism of Trump in a language that is more damning that the Trumpers are wanting it to be:

The nation’s top infectious disease expert said Sunday that “there isn’t, fundamentally, a difference” between his view and President Donald Trump’s when it comes to combatting coronavirus, saying Trump just approaches fighting the pandemic from a “hope, layperson standpoint” while he approaches it from a scientific one.

Fauci is saying that Trump doesn’t know what Trump is talking about. But the right-wing press and Trumpers are interpreting this statement of Fauci as meaning that Trump is correct.

Used to be that someone in Fauci’s position would still be in the GS pay scale and as a government employee could not be fired for political reasons.

The super grades were replaced with the Senior Executive Service. I presume that Fauci is a SES.

SES can be fired… but someone in Fauci’s position is not a political appointee. Thus Fauci has remained in that position through a few Presidents now.

Article I, section 5 of the Constitution requires that a quorum (51 senators) be present for the Senate to conduct business. Often, fewer than 51 senators are present on the floor, but the Senate presumes a quorum unless a roll call vote or quorum call suggests otherwise.

So you only need 51… That makes it unlikely that the senate will be unable to do it work unless Mitch ratfucks it somehow.

Remember 50 years ago California had free public universities until Reagan got into office…been downhill ever since…

I belong to the last generation to graduate without debt thanks to Social Security, Basic Education Opportunity Grants and low in-state tuition

The City of Philadelphia restrictions are in effect until further notice as per Brian Abernathy Managing Director, City of Philadelphia. I guess that means for me that I am going to be at home (and online) for a while. All I have to do now is find out if we are being paid.

My wife has been ordered to stay home this week. Since they weren’t able to get her a laptop so she can work, I am assuming she won’t get paid. Fortunately I can work from home.

BTW, I don’t expect this comment to be popular, but I have to write it anyway. There is no clear evidence that the creature called the virus itself a hoax. From the context it is clear that it was calling the Dems’ take on its treatment of the virus a hoax. There is no evidence the creature actually denied the existence of the virus, and it didn’t do it before or since (in fact both before and since it acknowledged the reality of the virus, downplaying it however). In the same speech the creature also called the impeachment a hoax. Obviously not implying that there was no impeachment. The creature is infamous for not being able to express itself properly and using kindergarten-level sentence structure and vocabulary.

Now, I get that its speech in today’s context is political dynamite regardless of context, and should be used as such. No objections there. The creature should go, and if it happens through corona (in whatever sense…), all the sweeter. Five Minutes of Pedantry are over. /

That’s because Hispanic is a multi-racial ethnicity. Most are mestizo’s of mixed Native American and European origin with also a few percentage of sub-Saharan African origin mixed in. But there are plenty of Mexicans who would assumed to be non-Hispanic white until they open their mouth. And many who look pure Native American.

And there are many Afro-Hispanics, say from the Dominican republic, Colombia, or parts of Mexico. There are even a tiny numbers of Asian origin (from the Chinese or Japanese minorities throughout Latin America) e.g. astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz from Costa Rica or Alberto Fujimori of Peru’s, or some people of Filipino origin who identify as Spanish.

And there are Middle Eastern Hispanics (Shakira is only the most famous).

Separating them out by country of origin might be a reasonable approach.

What that means is if 5 Republicans become sick, the rest will just stay away.

Sure, statistically it is not as deadly as the Spanish flu was to the young and otherwise healthy but it’s a) still a higher death rate than the flu and b) those numbers out of SK assume that the hospitals don’t get overwhelmed. Also c) I suspect our population as a whole is somewhat unhealthier and has a larger number of pre-existing conditions at younger ages than SK.

I take the risks in our house because I am younger and healthier but I’m still rolling the dice and hoping I’ll not be the outlier.

My computer at work is a desktop and the IT dept. hasn’t set me up with a laptop yet. My state agency announced that it will have a work code for people who are unable to work from home to get paid, but I imagine that I’ll have a laptop assigned to me within a couple of days and I’ll be working from home too.

MN hasn’t declared mandatory shelter-in-place yet so I may be working at the office next week. There’s hardly anyone there, but there are four of us working in one cubicle cluster, one guy only 10’ away. I’m finding it really hard to actually focus on work.

I’m supposed to retire on July 7. That’s seems unreal now. Processing my Medicare and Social Security forms will probably be impossible because of system breakdowns.

I agree that it will be bad. My reply was to a post about the Spanish Flu wrecking army units. I’m hoping that the average enlisted soldier is under 50 and in better than average shape.

At least Covid19 doesn’t seem deadly to those under 50. Fewer than 1/1000 death under 50 deaths in South Korea. The Spanish flu hit the young pretty hard,

And 17/2003 in Italy — a week or so ago. (I haven’t seen breakdowns of fatalities after then. This doesn’t mean younger people can’t have lasting aftereffects, e.g. lung scarring, though. It’s probably too early to say anything about that.)

I’m hoping so, but if it takes out enough of the command structure that could also be problematic. Doesn’t necessarily have to be deaths either, simply incapacitating people for long enough. There’s lots of reports from folks who are sick that it can last two weeks and that’s for the more mild cases. Severe cases you’re talking about 3-6 weeks. The duration is one of the reasons this is so problematic, because people will be taking up beds in the hospitals for quite a while.

That number I just cited for Italy is lower than the flu. Also, they had no deaths of people under 40, and their hospitals were overwhelmed even then.

There has been at least one death under 40 since then - 34 year old in Rome. Where I don’t believe the hospitals have been hit as badly, yet. Not to put too blunt a point on it either, but discussions of triage happening in Italy have very much been a thing, where the guidelines were to prioritize based on age and potential for recovery.

There is also at least suspected death under the age of 40 here in the US already, we just don’t know for sure because haha, testing. There’s plenty of reports out there about some younger cases already presenting in the ICUs here in the states.

Again, statistically folks in their 20s-30s are much less likely to have a moderate or severe case compared to older folks. I’d still rather not be the outlier.

I read a fun report from a few years back on the genomic structure of the Spanish flu and what they’ve been able to figure out from it and one of the cool things was that they believe that, from the mortality data, older folk at the time had probably had some exposure to a virus that shared some similar characteristics and therefore were somewhat less likely to have severe consequences.

One theory that may partially explain these findings is that the 1918 virus had an intrinsically high virulence, tempered only in those patients who had been born before 1889, e.g., because of exposure to a then-circulating virus capable of providing partial immunoprotection against the 1918 virus strain only in persons old enough (>35 years) to have been infected during that prior era (35). But this theory would present an additional paradox: an obscure precursor virus that left no detectable trace today would have had to have appeared and disappeared before 1889 and then reappeared more than 3 decades later.

Epidemiologic data on rates of clinical influenza by age, collected between 1900 and 1918, provide good evidence for the emergence of an antigenically novel influenza virus in 1918 (21). Jordan showed that from 1900 to 1917, the 5- to 15-year age group accounted for 11% of total influenza cases, while the >65-year age group accounted for 6% of influenza cases. But in 1918, cases in the 5- to 15-year-old group jumped to 25% of influenza cases (compatible with exposure to an antigenically novel virus strain), while the >65 age group only accounted for 0.6% of the influenza cases, findings consistent with previously acquired protective immunity caused by an identical or closely related viral protein to which older persons had once been exposed. Mortality data are in accord. In 1918, persons >75 years had lower influenza and pneumonia case-fatality rates than they had during the prepandemic period of 1911-1917. At the other end of the age spectrum (Figure 2), a high proportion of deaths in infancy and early childhood in 1918 mimics the age pattern, if not the mortality rate, of other influenza pandemics.

Dallas county is now shelter in place: wfaa.com

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins issued a “shelter-in-place” order at a press conference Sunday. Watch live at the video above.

The order will go into effect at 11:59 p.m. Monday night and will stay in effect until 11:59 p.m. on April 3. The order comes hours after Gov. Greg Abbott said he would not implement a statewide “shelter-in-place” order, but would instead leave it up to local authorities to make that decision.

Jenkins also said in addition to the Dallas County COVID-19 death this morning, another COVID-19 patient “has died in the last few hours.”

In the order, residents are ordered to “stay safe, stay at home” by staying in their places of residence. Residences include hotels, motels, shared rentals and similar facilities.

All non-essential businesses are ordered to close in-person operations.

Exceptions include medical care, trips to the grocery store, outdoor exercise and any other event that contributed to the health or safety of the people — all while maintaining social distancing.

All religious services are to go online, video or teleconference only.

Restaurants are still allowed to derve drive-thru or takeout.

What really terrifies me is what the White House reaction will be if the immigrant detention (concentration) camps have a major COVID-19 outbreak. Trump and his cronies have already proven that they don’t consider themselves to be bound by any laws regarding these people. Mass exterminations of detainees would a very possible scenario.

Update from Brooklyn,

The streets are mostly empty and the stores are running thin, but most people are getting what they need. Strange is just the beginning.

On a personal note, my cold is not going away and I’m beginning to wonder if I am infected:

I have
lots of fatigue
No fever (but can’t take my temperature)
Little cough
Shortness of breath (had this for about a month).
Nasal congestion
a few aches (had for months)

I week ago I went to the Dr for checkup and they did an x-ray which was negative (some inflammation).

I have an appointment for follow up on Wed, but will email ahead to see what they say.

I live alone, so I can only infect the mice.

I don’t know if Anymouse might have posted this, but I’m posting it.

Basically, Kent Hovind, the proprietor of “Dinosaur Adventure Land” in Repton, AL, had a 7 YO boy drown at his attractive nuisance of a 5th-rate theme park last Sunday. And it doesn’t seem to bother him! The Friendly Atheist article has a video cued up to the point where Hovind is talking about the incident.

friendlyatheist.patheos.com

Ever since Hovind started this outfit after his release from prison in 2016, it’s been clear something like this was going to happen. He made a point of not getting any sort of insurance. Sadly, the parents seem to be all-in followers of Hovind and may have come down from Indiana to investigate perhaps moving in with Kent and his Kult.

I don’t expect ANYTHING to come out of this, at least legalwise. In some other jurisdiction, there might be an indictment for some sort of negligence, but this is Alabama, where running a fifth-rate amusement park without any sort of insurance is some sort of legal.

Over 90% of self-described Libertarians cannot even describe the actual policies of Classical Libertarianism. It is an absolutist ideology similar in its departure from real-life consequences not unlike Communism.

Things these so-called Libertarians miss:

Classical Libertarianism includes open borders and really no such thing as citizenship. Businesses should be able to hire who they want with no concern for borders. There is a whole laundry list of ideas removed from real life consequences that “Libertarians” do not include which makes them faux-bertatians. I have some of these types in my own extended family.

And seriously if your husband is the CEO of the fucking NYSE why in the fuck would you be allowed to take office and hold ANY stocks at all?

Because Trump is a crimelord and criming is what he does, and he wants everyone around him to do crimes (in order to use the excuse “BUT EVERYONE!!”)

This is what Trumporrhoids call “Draining The Swamp” IOW destroying a pristine natural wetlands environment & filling it up with poisonous chemical & nuclear waste so nothing will grow there for thousands of years.

Hi.

Took a walk to the Post Office to mail bills and letters late this afternoon.

I braved the dangerous and wild streets of my town to walk around two blocks (there was no one out but me).

There are no new cases of Covid-19 in Nebraska since yesterday. The woman who picked up the virus in the United Kingdom early last month is still in critical condition.

Total number of cases - 42

Cases that tested negative - 356

Good thing we only have 1,900,000 people in this state.

Forcible closures of restaurants, bars and such are still in effect. Gatherings over ten are still prohibited. (The church across the street was closed for a second Sunday.)

Travellers returning to Nebraska from anywhere else are still required to quarantine themselves. Travellers returning to the Panhandle from the rest of the state are also required to quarantine themselves.

That would be nice. At some point they’re going to have to let some things now considered non-essential happen. As far as I know, you can’t get a house which is under construction inspected by the county, can’t go tour house that’s for sale, probably can’t close on a house you are trying to buy, test drive a car, etc., etc. This is not something that can be sustained long term-entirely aside from the businesses that will go under, people who can’t earn a living and so on.

Yup. I suspect, but can’t prove, that Florida with all the vacationers runs a bit atypical compared to many states, so gets redder when viruses are going around.

So even though the line chart shows two days of decreases, Florida seems much hotter on that map than anywhere else.

It is not clear to me if the Kinsa chart is going to be useful in Covid-19, though it may be. I guess we’ll see in the long run, in hindsight, if it had value.

In the states surrounding us:

There is substantial community transmission in Beadle County, South Dakota (in the east-central part of that state).
doh.sd.gov
The count in Wyoming has increased from one to twenty-six. Most are central or west, but one is now in Laramie County (on the border with the Nebraska Panhandle).
Tests completed at Wyoming Public Health Laboratory: 432
Tests completed at CDC lab: 1
Tests reported by commercial labs: 51 (good thing Wyoming only has 578,000 people)
health.wyo.gov
Colorado has also increased:
591 cases
58 hospitalized
29 counties
5,436 people tested
6 deaths
5 outbreaks at residential and non-hospital health care facilities
37 of those are in Weld County, Larimer County has 32, both of those counties border the Panhandle)
covid19.colorado.gov

The closes cases to me are in Wyoming, Colorado, and Lincoln County, Nebr. (county seat North Platte).

In the Panhandle, the police are now authorised to enforce self-quarantine.

I’m no fan of Zuckerberg, but I’d imagine they bought them afterwards to be ready the next time. I’m not sure what the point would have been to buy them and not hand them out to employees at the time of the fires. If they had all had masks, I’m pretty confident it would not have gone unnoticed.

I keep seeing references, including from Trump, to being a week into a “shelter in place” of a couple weeks. Since when is it anywhere near that?
The SF Bay Area is only on day 6 and that was a 3 week event. Then the state of California imposed one on the whole state 2 or 3 days later, of indeterminate length. I think other states issued them later, so where is this coming from? I know it seems longer for those of us staying home, but as far as I know it isn’t even the majority of the country yet.

It all depends upon how many people own then decide to use one of said thermometers on any given day.

We can take some comfort in the fact that if we ever have a virus that wipes out most of the population, the rich will take it with them to their hideout bunkers and kill themselves off.

That this had even been a discussion disgusts me. There is no concern for the athletes, for potential spectators, for nothing but money. Fuck the IOC.

There’s a lot to the money, but a lot of it is also that the athletes themselves have been training for it. Most of them aren’t rich. They have taken time off to train and prepare, and may not be able to do it one year later.

Presumably once testing (finally) ramps up, we can take a more proactive approach to containing the spread.

The new 45-minute test, widely distributed, could help. We’ll all have to get it periodically, since asymptomatic carriers are doing most of the transmissions.

So, do you suppose that the masks weren’t available last summer because Zucker had hoarded them all, or did he start his stash after the air had cleared up?

No, everybody in the bay area was trying to get hold of them. Like TP today, but with more reason.

Trump was touting the test at his news conference. I think, in keeping with his theories about not sharing with anyone (wanting a vaccine only for Americans) that we Californians should keep it just for ourselves.

I understand it will begin to be available at the end of the month. I wonder how long it will take to ramp up production?

It only shows us places that are worth checking, and can’t be assumed to show all of them.

Rango gave us a scare. Last week or so, he’d yife every so often, while lying in his bed. Hard to tell why. Last Saturday, we went for a walk in the rain. He was wearing his raincoat, but his head was still getting wet, so he was shaking off every so often.

The yifing got a bit worse.

We took him for a walk on Sunday, and he was limping off one of his front legs. And the yifing was getting worse through Monday. He tried to roach but cried out in pain!

Tuesday - Day One of Shelter In Place - we decided we HAD to take him to the Vet. I was dealing with my group of 6 people, how to work at home, etc, talking to the main office on the East Coast, etc. so Mrs. FBW and The Younger Boy took him.

I was about FRANTIC, because limping and crying in pain, with a Greyhound, suggests Osteosarcoma, and I just…just…just could NOT TAKE IT!!

So, when the Vet called to say he seems to have arthritis in his neck vertebrae, I was almost giddy! Gave him a cortisone shot, and pills to take home.

Fast forward to today - he’s MUCH, MUCH better! No yifing in the last day, roaching again, two walks the last two days, one of almost 2 miles and the other about 1.5 miles, and no limping!

The local grocery store I usually visit still has no paper products, and not much bottled water except for the pricy stuff.

They did get some butter in today, which just happened to be the brand I wanted, though by the time I got to the store at 2PM it looked like half of it was gone.

Still no eggs, either.

Except for paper products, it looked like the store I visited had more or less normal stocks. (I didn’t inventory it, of course.) So the TP hoarding virus is still circulating, but we’re all stocked up otherwise.

Dory is Queen of the Comfy Chair….

Dory and Rango playing Dog Games.

It might not be obvious from the pic, but Rango is looking INTENTLY at where he KNOWS Dory is, waiting for her to make a move. Dory is hanging out just at the edge of where he can see, carefully averting her eyes, waiting for HIM to make HIS move.

So, Rango is recovered well enough to play with Dory again!

One thing to remember about the Kinsa map is that they collect data from their thermometers (in wide use) but said collection points are not necessarily well distributed in some areas.

It all depends upon how many people own then decide to use one of said thermometers on any given day.

One thing I noticed is that it seems lots of places both in and out of Florida are showing declines. I’m wondering if there’s a kind of Heisenberg effect. Anyone with one of the thermometers would have seen the media coverage, including the NYT, and that somehow affected how they would act.

Conservatism is like any other religious faith: You have to be able to hold multiple contrary positions in you mind at the same time. Or as Orwell called it: Doublethink.

This is why you can show a Trumper the video of Trump mocking a disabled reporter and he’ll say something like “it didn’t happen, that’s fake news” or the religious apologetics claim of “you have to see it in context.”

Same with mocking Gold Star Families, &c.

Breaking: Panhandle Public Health District has extended the closure of all Panhandle schools until May 1. They are considering closing them for the rest of the school year.

starherald.com

More than 14,000 students throughout the Panhandle won’t hear school bells ring until at least May 1 - and possibly not again until next year.

School districts throughout the Panhandle were notifying parents that all schools in the ESU #13 service area will close until May 1. Letters from the districts indicated that the closure may continue after May 1.

Notices read: “After consultation with COVID-19 Unified Command, it has been determined that all schools in the Nebraska Panhandle will be closed through May 1st, with the possibility of schools being closed for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school year. This decision will be re-evaluated as circumstances change, with parents and families updated accordingly and extended as needed. This is a precautionary measure; there are currently no confirmed cases in the Panhandle; however, local health and school officials are watching the COVID-19 situation in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota closely. School Superintendents met with Unified Command today and agreed this action would help prevent exposure to our area to flatten the curve and decrease the spread of disease.”

(more at the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

ESU#13 refers to public health districts in Nebraska. PPHD is #13.

Scottsbluff Public Schools superintendent noted the PPHD notice on their school Website, but added this:

As you know from our own District communications and the overwhelming volume and frequency of information we all receive from other sources, this COVID-19 crisis is challenging everything we’ve come to take for granted about our daily routines, about our lives, and about our futures. Schooling is certainly one of those primary expectations that have been jolted.

The closure of schools is dramatic. However, it does not mean the end of education. Our staff is already developing and implementing plans with the goal of continuing to support all of our students and families.

Thusly, along with all other Panhandle School Districts, we make the following announcement only after much consideration, collaboration, review of regional data, and, most importantly, informed advice from our professional health advisors.

Scottsbluff Public Schools Closure Notice

My school district (Leyton Public School in Dalton, Nebr., which serves half our town) has a scrolling banner:

“NO SCHOOL UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. ALL SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ARE SUSPENDED AND ALL SCHOOL BUILDINGS ARE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC!”

Bridgeport Public School has not yet updated their Webpage, but with PPHD closing schools throughout the Panhandle, I imagine they will be putting it on the radio tonight.

I was never banned by a state from even running a charity.
I never ran a scam college.
I never cheated on all my wives while claiming “I don’t need forgiveness from God” and having Christians of all denominations except Hispanic Catholics and African-American Evangelicals vote for him in overwhelming numbers.
I never dodged military service.
I never showed disrespect to war veterans, war dead, or their family members.

I think I could stand up to the scrutiny.

For the crafters & costumers, I saw a couple of posts from a local hospital saying they aren’t allowed to accept home-sewn masks. (Some of the doctors’ offices and nursing homes are happy to take them.) However, to conserve their mask supplies, the hospital has reusable plastic surgical face shields that can be cleaned in between patients. Since they may need to share these shields between staffers, the staffers wear washable cloth “scrub caps” to prevent sweating into the foam bands.

The nurses say they’d be more than happy to take homemade scrub caps, noting that a thin cap is best. There are several patterns on Etsy & Pinterest, etc.

Might be simpler to sew for us non-experts who don’t have elastic for the masks. I need to go looking for patterns.

Another great mystery (to me, anyway.) These people who claim they are never sick since they started taking colloidal silver. If it kills all the viruses, fine, but it should also kill bacteria, right? Why don’t they all have diarrhea? Last time I took enough antibiotics to deal with an infection it also killed off my intestinal bacteria which really wasn’t great.

(Narrator: It doesn’t kill viruses and bacteria in vivo.)

All it does is turn your skin blue so you look like either an Andorran from Star Trek OR Papa Smurf!

A reminder: One of the greatest films ever made was about feckless idiots bungling their way to the end of the world. It even involved a Bircher fanatic.

Dr. Strangelove (1964) - War Room Scene

This particular scene was the first thing I thought of when I read about Senator Ron Johnson (R-Hell) making this incredible statement:

“… getting coronavirus is not a death sentence except for maybe no more than 3.4 percent of our population (and) I think probably far less.”

re: #355 PhillyPretzel

Another way to tell if a piece of food is done is to take its temperature. Here is a great website for thermometers. thermoworks.com
The Thermopen is great. I have one the MK-4.

Yes! Be warned though. Over the course of the past year, I started out by purchasing one and ended up buying 3.

I first got a ChefAlarm to verify that my circa 1977 stove’s oven was working okay. The oven wasn’t and I ended up buying a new stove.

Next was the Mk IV which is recommended by WireCutter and America’s Test Kitchen.

And finally, I got their Infrared Thermometer because it was ‘interesting’.

I had not realized how important managing temperature is in cooking. Similar to managing light in photography.

I’d like to suggest the cruise business as we knew it a few weeks ago may not deserve to be bailed out.

Faux News and the unquestioning majority of the press at the “Briefings”

Some network needs to get Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel accredited as their journalists, then send them to one of the press conferences. Talk about off the chain - a good old-fashioned Big Apple dressing down, live on-air, would be “must see TV”.

I’d have bought Fred tRump a condom, and/or Rump’s mother a round trip ticket to Mexico to ‘take care of it’.

nah, they’ll just let them starve to death. R’s don’t even consider them human. And they don’t consider D’s much above that, if at all.
