CL’d:

Now the Trumpists are touting some anti malarial drug as the panacea (in full staccato effect).

This reeks of phalanx (the WWZ placebo bs vaccine that didn’t do anything to stop spread).

It doesn’t stop the spread. It might not even be a good treatment option without double blind testing / controlled tests to determine whether it works.

At this point, I could say with equal conviction that drinking water saved these people.

That is the strategy, because then any calls for changes or added input can be decried as “stalling” from the “do-noting Democrats”.

Compare the “urgency” of the Senate GOP bill versus the “We’ll get to it when we get to it” attitude they showed the House Dem bill. Which (it bears mentioning) passed with an overwhelming bipartisan vote.

Carnival purposefully flags their ships in Liberia, Bermuda, and other countries as a flag of convenience, instead of as US so as to avoid taxes, regulation, and oversight. The crews are almost entirely non-American. The companies themselves might be headquartered here, but the bulk of their employees are low wage folks from overseas. They’re some of the hardest working people out there too, but the cruise lines would rather that you don’t notice them at all.

Un-fucking-believable. More Branch Covidians, in Louisiana no less.

Central church hosts more than 1,800 people amid covid-19 outbreak

The Life Tabernacle Church hosted 1,825 people at their Sunday morning service.

26 buses were used to pick people up from around the Baton Rouge area and transport them to Sunday service.

Pastor Tony Spell says the way to handle a pandemic is through the healing hand of Jesus.

That is our command, they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

Social distancing did not happen at the service, held outside. All 1,825 people were spread across the campuses seven buildings.

Throughout the service parishioners could be seen touching each other and closely gathering, very few wearing masks or gloves.

Spell says if anyone in his congregation contracts covid-19 he will heal them through God.

“I’m going to address that by laying hands on them and praying for them and depending on God to heal their body,” Spell said.

Oregon joins the stay at home crowd..

opb.org

Gov. Kate Brown Issues Order Directing Oregonians To ‘Stay Home’
In the last week, the governor had repeatedly declined to make an order of this scope, reasoning the coronavirus could be slowed if Oregonians would voluntarily observe social distancing practices. Brown was hesitant to further hurt the state’s economy by forcing more businesses to close, her office said.

That changed over the sunny spring weekend, when Oregonians flocked in large numbers to the coast, Columbia River Gorge, and other outdoor hot spots.

“Some Oregonians are not adhering to social distancing guidance provided by the Oregon Health Authority, as represented by crowds this last weekend at the Oregon Coast, Smith Rock State Park, the Columbia River Gorge and other places around the state,” Brown’s order says. “To slow the spread of COVID-19 in Oregon, to protect the health and lives of Oregonians, particularly those at highest risk, and to help avoid overwhelming local and regional healthcare capacity, I find that immediate implementation of additional measures is necessary.”

I do not love wingnuts either, but it’s not nearly that simple. A serious recession (or, heaven forbid, a depression or a real collapse) would also mean deaths, likely in the millions.

Time to stop trading sound bites and talk about the path between catastrophes. If they can’t do it on the twitters, at least we can consider real solutions here.

Biggest issue for Donny? Most of those states who will tell him where to get off have the biggest industries vital to the well-beng of the economy. And the states that would still have industries that would abide by the CDC guidelines, which would mean staying closed or working at reduced capacity in order to look after the safety and well-being of their workforce. So proclaiming “THE WORST IS OVER! GET BACK TO WORK!” would not mean an immediate return to “normal.”

speaking of turkey vultures, we get a ton of them in this neighborhood. In the evening, they all congregate on one of the large power lines, where there’s room for at least 20 of the big bastards. Normally, they start with an invocation and then a presentation. Sometimes awards are given. Later, they will sometimes congregate in smaller groups down in the creek by the bridge, where they seem to very much appreciate getting their feet cooled down.

Aides say Trump is itching for the guidelines to be eased when the 15-day period ends a week from Monday, but realistically there are few health experts who think that’s enough time to know whether the measures he announced last week — including recommending closing schools, limiting gatherings and keeping at least 6 feet of distance between individuals — will suffice.

Trump and some of his top officials are growing more anxious with social distancing guidelines put in place to combat the coronavirus, sources close to the White House effort said. One senior official said the President is losing patience with the period of national self-isolation that has frozen the US economy.

Meanwhile, the public health experts advising the President and his team on the coronavirus pandemic are continuing to argue that the broad guidelines urging people to work from home, avoid restaurants and large gatherings should remain in place.

As Trump’s leadership is tested, he turns to states and the private sector
The dynamic has led to a robust internal debate over how best to balance the actual health of the country — with potentially hundreds of thousands of lives at stake — with its economic health.

“The President is right, the cure can’t be worse than the disease, and we’re going to have to make some difficult tradeoffs,” Trump’s top economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Monday on Fox News. “I spoke with the President about this very subject late last evening, so we’ll be looking at a number of different things. Let’s give it another week.”
Some of Trump’s allies have continued to publicly suggest the measures announced by the White House last week were too stringent and have caused unnecessary economic pain. Many of his conservative allies circulated a Wall Street Journal editorial from last week, which questioned whether the shutdown was worth the trade-off of a shuttered economy.

That has helped fuel growing opposition among some of Trump’s advisers to an extended lockdown.

Discussions are already underway with advisers over what to do at the end of the 15 days. Trump very much wants to get people back to work, but his medical advisers continue to tell him the country has a way to go before emerging from the worst of the outbreak, a source familiar with the matter said.

It’s sane people vs. Donald Trump. I’m sure you can guess how this may well end.

Ponder the ramifications if Trump follows through with this growing sentiment of “re-starting” the economy and announces that people should stop social distancing and return to work:

1. The virus rages through the population basically unconstrained, and with the associate negative impacts on the health care system.
2. The US becomes persona non-grata internationally. No international flights originating from the US would be allowed (with the exception of a few dopey countries).
3. Any US traveler somehow arriving in another country would be put into mandatory quarantine.
4. In states where governors maintain shelter in place order, there would be MAGA cultists openly defying such orders, possibly requiring police or even national guard to step in to enforce the orders. The possibility of violence becomes high.
5. MAGA cultist governors lift shelter in place orders. Other states with governors that have a clue attempt to institute travel bans on any state where shelter in place/social distancing orders have been lifted. Chaos ensues as to the legality of such efforts.
6. Economy still in the shitter because no one wants to act as our trade partner and the chaos of states attempting to contain the virus bumping against those that aren’t.

Total and complete shitshow with the chance of violence while the virus rages on.

Illinois. Branch Covidians finally relented when the sheriff showed up.

Kane County religious school moves to e-learning as sheriff’s deputies prepare to bring the school into compliance with stay-at-home mandate

Kane County sheriff’s deputies spent Monday morning at Northwest Baptist Academy in Elgin planning to ask parents to keep their children home from what was believed to be the last open school in the state, but without telling officials, the school decided before the start of the school day to move to e-learning.

The sheriff’s office had been in talks since late last week with the school, which is part of the larger Northwest Bible Baptist Church community and had resisted Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s order closing schools, citing religious freedom grounds.

“The group had resisted efforts to cancel their planned virgin sacrifice, citing religious freedom grounds, but finally changed their minds when deputies reminded them that sacrifices have to be of legal age and, well, it’s Kane County.”

speaking of turkey vultures, we get a ton of them in this neighborhood.

There were a lot of those in southern Indiana when I lived there. I did a significant amount of country driving and on some late-spring early-summer mornings it was a real treat to see several of them standing in a field with wings outstretched to catch the first rays of the morning sun—you could see steam arising from the wings.

Even running it as a business, portraying 8.2m as “acceptable losses” makes no Zoddamned sense. Not if you actually listened in Econ 101 to the idea of “supply and demand.” If you remove 8.2m in demand, then all that supply goes nowhere and you don’t make any money.

Well, this happened live on Channel 4 News about 15 minutes ago. During a live broadcast spot by a reporter outside Westminister, someone stood behind the reporter and held up a sign. Normally, they would be bundled off camera tout suite, but because of social distancing, they can’t do that- especially not on a live broadcast, with less than 90 minutes before UK PM Boris Johnson is expected to effectively put the UK in lockdown mode.

BTW Channel 4 has been particularly good the past few days: the camera work has been updated to emphasise that, in both and studio and reported segments, the journalists are keeping a safe distance from the people they’re interviewing. Judging by the slightly different look of the footage, presumably the camera operators are also using distancing by using more magnifying lenses, and filming more from a distance.

Even more significantly, the main presenter Jon Snow, who is 72, and thus at more danger than most, is presenting segments of the show from his house. Indeed, he said on air tonight, just a few minutes ago, that he is “self-isolating”, before beginining his segment.

Regarding deaths and all, remember that the Trump administration already overseas camps dealing in death:

Mexican man dies in ICE custody; 10th since October

A 42-year-old Mexican man died in a South Texas hospital while being held pending his deportation, immigration authorities said Monday.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified the man as Ramiro Hernandez Ibarra and said he died Saturday after being hospitalized Thursday. ICE said Hernandez’s preliminary cause of death was complications related to septic shock but did not provide further details.

Hernandez is the 10th person to die in ICE custody since October, the start of the governmental fiscal year. Eight people died in the previous fiscal year

.

So, septic shock. Which means preceded by sepsis.

How did a detainee get sepsis?

Several people have come forward saying the drug has helped fight COVID-19

Rio Giardinieri, of Florida, said the drug ‘saved his life’ after he fell ill with virus

Margaret Novins, of New Jersey, also said the medication made her feel better

Note: 101,383 people are counted as “recovered” from Covid-19. I bet most of them were not treated with hydroxychloroquine. Both Giardinieri and Novins above may very well have recovered anyway, without the treatment.

As I was doing the dishes before calling it a night, it occurred to me that Trump’s notion of letting the virus burn through in order to save the economy from the effects of prolonged social distancing means that (based on what we’ve already observed from other outbreaks) a good many older Americans would end up dead in such a scenario - IOW, the GOP base.

A Pyrrhic victory - you might even say, a bigly Pyrrhic victory.

Hi.

The organiser of the event we’re supposed to attend in Germany wrote me last night asking if we wanted our money back. (The event is still on for now.)

I told him yes, because it won’t be long before there is an outbreak in my area, and we don’t want to carry the disease to others there. (Most of the attendees will be from Germany and France.)

In the meantime, my wife says we need to go into town for a few things, so I’m going to pop back out again in a few minutes.

Particularly since it’s totally based upon the idea that if people “go back to work” then the economy will not only recover, but it will “skyrocket” before November. As opposed to the reality, which is that it will sputter and stall out as millions get sick and end up either at home or in the ICU. Then we’ll get involuntary social-distancing as people stay the fuck away from public venues for fear of getting sick, turning what might have been a couple weeks/months of economic pain into a slow and lingering death spiral.

262
Amory Blaine  Mar 23, 2020 • 1:03:38pm

Returning everyone to work will end any aid to americans. Then, businesses will fold (maybe not as many) anyways as the workforce will be sick. These sick workers with no insurance or sick leave will default on loans in the millions. Rinse and repeat.

As always, Trump is simply incapable of any type of long-term thinking and he lacks the ability to recognize potential consequences.

I feel a bit dirty typing this, but I can’t get too bent over McConnell investing in Moderna after Moderna announced it was fast tracking efforts to create a vaccine. At most, it implies that he knew COVID-19 was going to be a bigger issue than the Fed gov’t was willing to admit, but by the time Moderna made that announcement, things were already escalating.

There are jobs at stake, but that is a separate issue to be addressed. And AFAIK, most cruise lines use cheap third-country labor for most positions.

Foreign-flagged vessels can seek help from those countries. Too bad about their flags of inconvenience to avoid US maritime and labour laws and taxes.

Trump is running out of tricks. The power of the Presidency in great part stems from the power of the pulpit, and the ability to corral other leaders to get them to work together. Yes, the President is CiC of the military, but our nuclear weapons don’t mean much against a virus. One can’t bomb-bomb-bomb a virus like we do those middle-east countries we are fond of destroying.

A one-time $1,200 check ain’t going to do jackshit for the majority of workers. Most of that will go to the rents and mortgage payments that Repubs don’t address in their bill. Or to student loan debts that (again) are not in that bill. Or any of a number of other bills that Repubs think you should still be paying even in the midst of an economic crisis.

That’s not money that’s going back into the economy, that’s money that’s going into a CEO’s stock portfolio.

Time for a reminder — Paracelsus

He was a pioneer in several aspects of the “medical revolution” of the Renaissance, emphasizing the value of observation in combination with received wisdom. He is credited as the “father of toxicology”.[15] Paracelsus also had a substantial impact as a prophet or diviner, his “Prognostications” being studied by Rosicrucians in the 1600s. Paracelsianism is the early modern medical movement inspired by the study of his works.[16]

The dose makes the poison” (Latin: sola dosis facit venenum) is an adage intended to indicate a basic principle of toxicology. It is credited to Paracelsus who expressed the classic toxicology maxim “All things are poison, and nothing is without poison, the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison.” This is often condensed to: “The dose makes the poison” or in Latin, “Sola dosis facit venenum”. It means that a substance can produce the harmful effect associated with its toxic properties only if it reaches a susceptible biological system within the body in a high enough concentration (i.e., dose).[2]

Foreign-flagged vessels can seek help from those countries. Too bad about their flags of inconvenience to avoid US maritime and labour laws and taxes.

I’m sure Liberia or Belize is willing to bail out Princess and Disney.

There is exactly one US flagged cruise ship. If businesses are bailed out, give that one money.

Pride of America

MS Pride of America is a cruise ship built in the United States* and is operated by Norwegian Cruise Lines. Inaugurated during the 2005/2006 cruise season as the first new U.S.-flagged cruise ship in nearly fifty years,[5] Pride of America was designed to pay homage to the spirit of the United States, from the patriotic artwork on the hull to the U.S.-themed public spaces.

She may be flagged in the U.S. but is owned by a foreign company. Don’t think they would be eligible for a bailout.

OOPS! My bad: Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), also known in short as Norwegian, is a cruise line founded in 1966 and based in the United States. It is the third-largest cruise line in the world by passengers, controlling about 8.7% of the total worldwide share of the cruise market by passengers as of 2018.[2] It is wholly owned by parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

* Norwegian Cruise Line Ltd acquired the unfinished ship and was towed to Germany for completion as Pride of America for their newly launched NCL America division. In the process, the ship was lengthened from 850 feet (260 m) to 920 feet (280 m), increasing the gross tonnage from 72,000 to more than 80,000. Under NCL America, the ship was initially slated for completion in 2004, but the delivery date was pushed back to 2005 after a major storm hit the Lloyd Werft shipyard and caused considerable damage to the vessel which also sank at her berth.[6] A special exemption on the part of the U.S. government allowed the modified, mostly German-built ship to attain U.S. registry.

Unless you need hospitalization, you aren’t getting tests in NYC. They don’t have the tests to even begin to contain this thing.

Fuck Trump. Fuck ‘em all to hell. This isn’t going to be over in 15 days. We aren’t returning to normal in 15 days. This is going to persist because Trump’s a fucking lunatic who listens to Jared and not Dr. Fauci.

I hear you: here in now near-deserted Gotham (how a city of 8 million people can manage the appearance of near-desertion is a tricky thing, but New Yorkers manage, somehow!) the retail distribution networks are still functioning, if with the expected lacunae. The Duane Reade (Walgreeen’s) across the street from me is chockablock with TP (their own brand, but it’s an improvement over newsprint), and most OTC medications, etc: but hand sanitizer, and most other disinfectant products, are still mostly unobtainable. They keep saying that they will be getting “deliveries” every few days or so: but sanitizer seems never to be part of them….

Materials for the respirator are widely available and the present estimate is that the cost of one -printed on a 3D printer -would be under 1,000 crowns*, which is considered a very good price for a high grade respirator of this kind.

1000 Kč = about $39.

And how is that enforced? Will Jack turn off the orange shit-goblin’s ability to block people or is the ruling simply a paper tiger?

School’s cancelled for the year here in Virginia. Heard from a former teacher, a former camp counselor who is now a teacher, and a former classmate who is now a teacher. I wonder if there’s anyway to help out the out of work teachers. A lot of their lesson plans will go online but for many of them, I imagine this wasn’t something they ever anticipated dealing with. One reason why I particularly hate the GOP is how they treat teachers. That’s a good question. I can definitely see this as a “Judge Marshall has made his ruling now let him enforce it” reaction by Trump. God though this just pisses me off thinking about the reality of this. Our President is the world’s biggest Twitter troll.

Half assing plans to limit contacts. Half asses containment within the state. But sure, quarantine people flying from NY/NJ into FL now after you kept the goddamned beaches open and didn’t move to protect the millions of seniors and retirees who live in your state.

Besides, as I’ve pointed out this is now in all 50 states and this should be a national policy, but instead they’re still acting like air travel should go on as normal. Where’s the outbound screening? Where’s all the TSA screening to make sure that you don’t get on board already sick.

They haven’t bothered to do any of that and it’s already too late to contain spread domestically because Trump screwed that up too.

Wife and 20 year old stepson just ventured out to her closed public school. Teachers are coming in small batches to pick up materials. And shockingly I’ve got a phone interview for a good job in an hour, thanks to a recruiter reaching out to me on LinkedIn. How weird is that? More later lizards! TTFN

UPDATE: Well, the phone interview with the recruiter went great. He’s submitting me as a candidate and we’re planning a phone interview with the employer tomorrow. They have the position on a fast track and hope to make an offer to someone by the end of the day tomorrow. It’s right in my wheelhouse, and as good as anything I might have hoped for even before the apocalypse kicked off a couple of weeks ago. The woman who had the job decided to not return from maternity leave, so they’re scrambling to fill it quickly.
It’s for a Media Director position with a Oklahoma City marketing agency, full-time remote for now and full-time onsite once that’s an option again. The recruiter and I talked some about how local businesses now only have traditional and online media available to them as they attempt to maintain their communities of customers, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a long-established local agency is still seeing business.
And to top it all off, after stopping at 5 stores and sending the kiddo in, my wife scored two big packages of TP.
Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for tomorrow.

That was my reason for opposing it too. I have this memory of seeing a story about a case about an African-American man convicted of killing a white cop. There was some doubt I recall to his guilt and I feel even though I think murderers, rapists, and other violent criminals should receive harsh punishments for their crimes, you can’t bring back the dead. Death is final. Then I saw the Green Mile. I get why victims families support it but I don’t think it’s right.

16 People Sick Following Birthday Party at LA’s Trump National Golf Club

Several people who were at the March 8 event tested positive for COVID-19

More than a dozen people are reportedly sick after an early March event held at the fine dining restaurant of Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, the wealthy standalone city in the southwest corner of Los Angeles County. The exclusive event, a 70th birthday party for former Rancho Palos Verdes mayor Susan Brooks, has seen 16 of its 65 attendees fall ill, with several of those cases now confirmed to be COVID-19.

Easy Reader News was the first to report on the health scare, which stems from the event on March 8. Brooks, who has since tested positive for COVID-19, told the News that she cautioned event-goers to stay home if they felt sick in any way, and advised in a message to attendees that they keep a respectful distance throughout the event. The group included a variety of mostly older people from around Rancho Palos Verdes, including current Fourth District county supervisor Janice Hahn, who is now self-quarantining at her home. Two unidentified male guests have been hospitalized and are on ventilators, reports the News.

I really like Chris Murphy’s tweets. Here he is exposing what Republicans really mean by “bipartisan.” - cooperation between Republicans and lobbyists. In the first minute or so of his speech, he explains the creation of the current bill. Democrats were escorted out of the room on Saturday. Lobbyists sent Republicans their bills on Sunday.

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts called on Nebraskans to make appointments to donate blood. The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage as many blood drives are being cancelled across the country due to coronavirus concerns.

“The American Red Cross has been there for Nebraskans in our times of greatest need. Now, I urge healthy Nebraskans to help the Red Cross and their neighbors by setting an appointment to donate blood as soon as possible,” Gov. Ricketts said.

Through March 17, nearly 4,000 Red Cross blood drives have been cancelled across the country due to coronavirus concerns, resulting in more than 100,000 fewer blood donations. Some of these cancellations have occurred in Nebraska.

Organizations can safely host blood drives while adhering to social distancing measures. By continuing to donate, Nebraskans can ensure an available blood supply for patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer.

Eligible and healthy donors are strongly urged to make an appointment at redcross.org to provide lifesaving blood products to patients.

Over in Wyoming, where they also aren’t doing anything, they are trying to catch up to us as well. They are up to twenty-six. Nebraska is at fifty with many times more people.
