Do Republicans understand what will happen when we surpass China? How that will make people think about the disease. New round of collective freaking the f out incoming.

China has a f’ load more people and did not have plenty of time to prep. We are the word’s worst does not equal MAGA. I expect some BS about how China’s numbers are fake. What about Italy?

At this point they aren’t thinking past a few days, much less a week.

And yet Republicans have no problem with voting by mail if they control the state.

We’ve had it in Nebraska far longer than Oregon or Washington.

They only care in states where they are a dead letter (HI, CA) or a swing state where they could be wiped out.

Thank dog the shelter in place orders are all being entered by local governments, so Trump has no authority to revoke them on Easter. So glad Kentucky has a Democratic Governor who won’t feel pressured by Trump to lift restrictions.

Perhaps we’ll argue a few days in early April about how ‘fake’ China’s numbers are. Some Luntz person is probably already testing the best ‘wording’ to meme this.

When do those arguments start to fall? At 2, 3, 4, or 5 to 1 ratios of US cases to China’s do more people start to say nah or do we begin to change when deaths reach 3000+? This will not be pretty.

From the previous thread:

re: #152 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

My brother lives in the Springs. He thinks the infection is so high because the wingnuts thought it was a hoax and made a point of ignoring any and all precautions. He says they are still at it, cruising around in their pickups, gathering in the parks, holding parties, etc.

It’s because of the wingnuts in your state (see also Weld County, which borders the Nebraska Panhandle, also with a high infection rate) why we’re on lockdown in the Panhandle to keep it out.

There is none of that cruising in pickup trucks or big gatherings in parks or anything like that going on here.

Conservatism drives voters to the polls on fear. Fear of Teh Geyh, fear of transgender people, fear of voting rights, fear of immigrants, &c as long as I’ve been alive.

Amazingly, they had a perfect fear-mongering tool, a worldwide pandemic, and they threw that tool away by calling it a Democratic fear-mongering hoax. The one time they had something truthful to use, they blew it.

Ultimately there will be a test to see if you have it now, and a test to see if you previously had it.

We hope - and there’s not been much evidence against this - that once you’ve had it you’ll be immune. So the live illness test will be used to track down and isolate live cases, and be used repeatedly on the people around those who are quarantined.

This presupposes that you have a low enough case rate to focus. This is where SK has been winning the battle, and where we - hopefully, eventually - will get back to. But to get there we’re going to have to ride out the curve in front of us.

I understand that. But being tested today, abs coming back negative doesn’t mean you don’t have it 3-6-9 weeks from now. You have a cold…a bad one. Tested and negative. Then you get sick again. See what I’m saying?

An important message from Clarkson, Hammond & May

Boris has trashed “herd immunity” for “stay at home” when his government figured out how many dead there would be. He has closed the pubs!

NHS (National Health Service) is already overwhelmed with simply seasonal flu, thanks to conservatories funding cuts over ten years and vilifying EU health workers. Sadly England will most likely look like Italy soon.

Probably not enough. Several prelim studies suggest 5 to 10X more than confirmed cases with viral shedding with no/low symptoms. They should test nuclear subs crews or anything else critical with best current test in beginning of isolation and 7? or even 14 days later. Prior study suggested that by 11.5 days, 97.5% had shown symptoms. Those number on a multi person ship mean its likely you will get an asymptomatic carrier or one that hasn’t presented symptoms yet.

Symptoms are %’s, Some have nothing, some have diarrhea or lose smell/taste, most if anything have fever.

Test them before isolation, during, and before boarding. Consult, make a plan. Learn something that’s important to the world (share) and is also mission critical for the navy.

Oh, it’s almost a certainty that there will be arguments over the “true” number of dead from this outbreak for years to come. I say it’s almost a guarantee now that wingnuts will insist in years to come that the “deep state” deliberately inflated the numbers by recording deaths from other diseases/illnesses as due to this outbreak in order to hurt Trump’s “legacy.”

Good point at Fark about the Gallup poll today: Trump actually tried to look like a “leader” last week, which would make this poll a lagging indicator compared to where it will likely sit in another week or so when he starts trying to demand the country “reopen” as the number of infected/dead spikes.

Actually it doubles every 3 days so there will be 28,800 dead by Easter.

The thing with testing is at the moment, we only have the test active for “do you have it at this particular moment.” Useful - I mean sure, it’s better than nothing - but we’re not deploying it widely enough for any number of reasons that I won’t go into here. So a valid measure for a snapshot in time, but tells you nothing about things moving forward - unless the person tests positive, in which case you know they have been exposed and either develops antibodies (survives) or not (dies).

What we really truly need is the serological tests, which are slowly starting to come online (or at least proof of concept has been done but I haven’t seen indication that it has moved into production and widespread testing yet) - those are the ones that say “have you had it and do you have the antibodies - therefore, are you immune.” (And yes, this is leaving aside the discussion of reinfection which I tend to believe is unlikely based on other coronaviruses and also data from both the vast majority of folks who have shown no re-infection plus primate data - keep in mind that the PCR tests are not the most reliable with a low viral load.) With *that* information it would be possible to say “okay, someone who has a certificate that shows they have been exposed and recovered can go out and resume work” because they would be unable to transmit the disease. That’s the whole thing about herd immunity. That’s what we aim for with the vaccines.

Once we have that test, yes, EVERYONE should get it. Find out who was exposed and was asymptomatic or that cold was really COVID-19 or whatever. And then, moving forward, you can test individual cases as needed. But at this point in the big picture, it’s the serological testing that matters far more than the immediate testing. Assume everyone you interact with is potentially infected. Try to act accordingly.

Social distancing at the doctor’s office meant mr. klys could not come in and hold my hand for today’s procedure which SUCKED. I completely understand and did not throw a fit even though I was very disappointed because it was a fucking awful appointment and I had a ton of anxiety about it but whatever. It’s done for another five-six years and I’m off the anti-anxiety meds and onto the alcohol.

My wife just got a bullshyte phishing E-mail that is incredibly wild, claiming to be from Mike Pompeo. This thing goes on for pages.

She sent it along to the FBI.

It turns out a lot of E-mail spammers use software which cannot produce an E-mail address over thirty-two characters. The same goes for many companies (I have trouble adding minutes to my TracFone as one example, because they will not accept my E-mail address).

I have a similar problem with E-mail from the state government: Its software could not send to an E-mail longer than thirty-two characters. (Their IT people fixed that when I was on the village board.)

Having such a long E-mail means I don’t get the humorous E-mails from spammers my wife gets.

I am 100% for effective scientific communication on this subject! It’s just that personally I do much better through reading the source papers - I have a lot of practice reading between the lines for both what they say and then what the things they don’t say mean. So while some of the technical stuff I have to look up, the other skills are holding up just fine.

I’m feeling like I should pull together a resource list of “topic” and “short layperson summary of the study conclusion complete with the major caveats” and links to the studies themselves but today was not a day for work.

Yes, and then the Chinese gov’t deliberately released it within their own borders and disrupted their own economy to scare Trump.

“Well, that’s what the cover-up was for! It accidentally got loose!”

How would that make sense if this was supposed to be a virus aimed at America to scare Trump?

“…They did it deliberately to make it look like an accident!”

Yeah, I’m done here.

Lets take 674 deaths in USA (worldometer, earlier tonight) vs 782 now and see how many deaths there are based on doubling times

Below are the tables. Using 3.5 day doubling, gives the USA 2211 deaths by the end of march, and 23.8k by the end of Easter day. 1/2 day doubling errors really compound by Easter (72% more, 43k for 3 day doubling starting with 674). If 782 is the more correct number, then there will be 2566 deaths by the end of march and 27.8k deaths by the end of Easter day. This is an indication of how a small change in rate results in a large difference in outcome at later time points.

674 start
2.5day 3day 3.5day 4day 4.5day 5day
March 3557.4 2696.0 2211.6 1906.4 1698.4 1548.4
Easter 99100.5 43136.0 23813.0 15250.9 10784.0 8172.7

782 start

March 4127.4 3128.0 2566.0 2211.8 1970.5 1796.6

It is so easy to get really stressed by the craziness of these days. Here are a few ideas. I encourage others on lgf to continue posting their self-care ideas.

You’re at Home. The News Is Intense. Make Time for Self-Care.
thewirecutter.com

Generally, I unplug and do things that I can actually control and succeed at. Sometimes as small as taking a walk around the block. The down side is that I end up getting behind a couple of threads and it will take me a day or more to catch up.

Last project today was to successfully score some tp. (Actually that is for a friend and her daughter.) Locally, there is a FaceBook page [ facebook.com ] as well as a bunch NextDoor postings. Two reputed good local sources are Commercial Cleaning Supply Companies and local Asian supermarkets.

Remember it is a marathon not a sprint.

Be well and of good spirit!

It wasn’t just that BoJo changed his mind when he grasped the sheer enormity of what he’d be facing in a full-on unchecked spread of COVID-19. What also contributed to the government’s abrupt about-face was when French President Macron threatened to close the French shipping ports to the UK, which would’ve left the Brits as completely cut off as North Korea.

What I have been pondering recently is whether the US can be stabilized after the current fiasco. If so, I fear that we are in for more waves of destabilization by a very destructive right wing.

I am wondering whether some final wave of destruction will cause such damage to our current post-WW2 institutions that we will require a generational reset on the order of the Civil War or the New Deal.

Why are they doing this? Because it pays. Look at the chart of wealth distribution posted in an earlier thread. The ultra-wealthy have been attacking the Post-Great Depression New Deal since Ronald Reagan. And doing it quite successfully.

Limited details but oversight for the slush fund (1/2 trillion), one time payment of $1,200 bucks to Americans who make up to $75,000. Individuals with no or little tax liability would receive the same amount.

I’ve listened to forty years of Republican voters saying “I didn’t leave the party; the party left me” (including my wife’s explanation for why she became a Libertarian).

They have always been this way.

What seems more likely is the former Republican voter who says that has awakened to the realisation they were lied to and swallowed it (but they don’t want to admit they fell for a lie).

It’s been successful because the American memory is brief; by the 1980’s less than half the voters (and zero people too young to vote) had any visceral memory of why the New Deal was even needed.

But the 2024 voters… a clear majority carry vivid memories of the 2008 meltdown, and now this one. It’s neither “historical” nor “abstract theoretical” to them.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and public health districts have reported 64 total cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday, March 24. The 11 counties in the Panhandle continue to not yet see any positive testing, but public health officials say that’s no reason to be lulled into a sense of false security.

“In the Panhandle, we continue to have no confirmed cases,” Paulette Schnell, Scotts Bluff County Health director, said. Schnell has been giving the updates on cases each day as Panhandle Public Health District hosts a call for the media and members of its unified command team. “We continue to have 9 pending cases.”

Game And Parks Closing Public Access To Wildlife Viewing Blinds (Goes to the Sidney, Nebr. Sun-Telegraph, more at the link):

NORTH PLATTE - In a proactive state and national effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and ensure the health of its customers and staff, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is closing the public crane viewing blind at North River Wildlife Management Area north of Hershey.

The Commission aims to protect its staff and customers by removing opportunities for crowds to gather at facilities and events and by maintaining clean areas that are available to the public.

A prairie-chicken viewing blind located south of North Platte, is a partnership between the Commission and the Nebraska Cooperative Republican Platte Enhancement (NCORPE), will also be closed for this season to help eliminate opportunities for the virus to be spread.

North Platte has three Covid-19 cases.

Every year the Sandhill Crane migration of milions of birds flies through the area. That migration draws thousands of bird watchers, bring lots of tourist money to western Nebraska.

FWIW, lottery sales must be way down, at least here in California. The payouts for last night’s MegaMillions were low (for example, four white balls only paid $242 when usually it is up in the four hundred dollar range) and the five-ball value is just creeping up.

Of course the lottery local offices are closed to the public, also, but that alone wouldn’t deter sales, I think.

Might also be that if the next paycheck might be in doubt the marginal utility of a dollar or two went way up and thus the value of a lottery ticket has dropped.

I wonder if the nut-right in Brazil might be secretly hoping that COVID-19 is going to go ripping through the poor parts of the Brazilian cities and kill a bunch of people.

They may well be hoping that, but the gangs that run the favelas have other ideas. They’re enforcing lockdown and social distancing.

According to well-sourced Rio newspaper Extra, City of God gangsters have been driving round the slum, blaring out a recorded message to residents.

“We’re imposing a curfew because nobody is taking this seriously,” the message said, according to Extra’s Tuesday story. “Whoever is in the street screwing around or going for a walk will receive a corrective and serve as an example. Better to stay home doing nothing. The message has been given.”

Reuters was unable to confirm the veracity of the recorded message, but City of God residents, who declined to give their names for fear of retribution, confirmed an evening curfew and other restrictions.

The gangs’ concern over the outbreak echoes fears nationwide about the fate of Brazil’s nearly 15 million favela residents confronting what some have dubbed “the disease of the rich.”

The coronavirus landed in the country with wealthier Brazilians returning from Europe, but is quickly migrating into poorer communities, where crowded quarters, informal labor and weak public services threaten to accelerate its spread.

It really says something when outright criminals have a better grasp of the seriousness of the situation than the goddamn elected president of the nation.

Moscow is ready to help Washington in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak if necessary, according to the Russian ambassador to the United States. cnn.it

Yeah, they might wanna hold on to that stuff for a few weeks.

The official line from the Kremlin is that there have been zero deaths from coronavirus. Zip, zero not us. And if you report a case load over the official 400-whatever, then you can be arrested for essentially inciting public unrest. The doctors’ unions have been raising alarms for days that this is flatly untrue, putting themselves in danger from the government. Even the mayor of Moscow, a sociopathic crook like any other in the government, has been trying to tell the Kremlin that shit is bad and getting worse.

It’s hard to tell whether Putin believes the true extent of the problem or he’s in happy talk la la land. He has a great deal of interest in making things “normal” until the 22 April referendum-thing on letting him be president for life, but that’s a hell of a long way away in pandemic terms. And it’s not like his staff doesn’t lie to him on a constant basis.

Despite official figures reporting few to no new domestic Covid-19 cases on the Chinese mainland in recent days, authorities continue to detect more infections, with those in the city at the heart of the country’s outbreak often amounting to more than a dozen a day, Caixin has learned.

According to a member of the infectious disease prevention and control team in Wuhan, every day the city continues to record “several or more than a dozen asymptomatic infected individuals”, which are people that have tested positive for Covid-19, but do not feel ill and are excluded from published numbers.

As of Sunday (March 22), Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, had four consecutive days of zero new “confirmed cases.”

The person, who asked not to be named, said that these asymptomatic people are found by tracing the contacts of others who are infected and by screening quarantine workers who are at high risk of infection, as opposed to en masse testing.

“It’s not possible at the moment to tell if transmission has stopped,” the person said.

The song was released in 2013.

Prince Charles has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus and is displaying mild symptoms “but otherwise remains in good health”, Clarence House has said.

A Clarence House spokesman said the Duchess of Cornwall had also been tested but does not have the virus.

In accordance with Government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.

The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire where they met the criteria required for testing.

It is not possible to ascertain from whom the Prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during recent weeks.

Ok, I tried. On that subject, I last spoke with my older brother on 27 Feb. I had relayed info about how seriously China was countering the epidemic in Wuhan, and was trying to transition to other aspects of what precautions people should take, and how anyone could easily use a little math to get a fairly high-confidence estimate of when we might expect the shit to hit the fan.

But when he said that COVID-19 was a HOAX, and that Trump’s dismantling of this nation’s world-class pandemic response teams was FAKE NEWS, I lost it. I said “We’re done here. I’ll call you back in May” and hung up. Unfortunately, it’s now clear that’s going to be a few weeks too late. We are both in our 70’s.

True enough. I mean, little ol’ Oregon Buddhist Temple has been livestreaming their Sunday services as of late, as the temple is currently closed owing to the outbreak; only Rev. Sugahara is there. Yep….I was right.

The number of recorded coronavirus cases in Russia reached 658 on Wednesday, a day after the mayor of Moscow told President Vladimir Putin that the real scale of the problem in the Russian capital far exceeded official figures.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, a close Putin ally, told the Russian leader on Tuesday that a serious situation was unfolding in the capital and that the real number of cases was unclear but was increasing quickly.

Testing for the virus was scarce, said Sobyanin, and many Muscovites returning from abroad were self-isolating at home or in holiday cottages in the countryside, and not being tested.

Reuters reported earlier this month that a reported sharp increase in pneumonia cases in Moscow and contradictory information around the issue was fuelling fears about the accuracy of official coronavirus data which remains much lower than many European countries.

Lynchburg Mayor Treney Tweedy is criticizing Jerry Falwell Jr.’s response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Lynchburg Mayor Treney Tweedy denounced the evangelical Christian university’s decision to allow students back on campus after spring break, calling it “reckless.”

“We are in the midst of a public health crisis,” Tweedy said Tuesday. “I am concerned for the students, faculty and employees at Liberty University, and I am also very concerned for the residents of the Lynchburg community.”

The Department of Homeland Security stopped updating its annual models of the havoc that pandemics would wreak on America’s critical infrastructure in 2017,” Politico reports.

“From at least 2005 to 2017, an office inside DHS, in tandem with analysts and supercomputers at several national laboratories, produced detailed analyses of what would happen to everything from transportation systems to hospitals if a pandemic hit the United States.”

“But the work abruptly stopped in 2017 amid a bureaucratic dispute over its value, two of the former officials said, leaving the department flat-footed as it seeks to stay ahead of the impacts the COVID-19 outbreak is having on vast swathes of the U.S. economy.”

Frontier School of the Bible (the private Bible school in La Grange, Wyo. where parents send their children for a few more years to prevent them from seeing the real world by isolating them out in the middle of nowhere, and which teaches you EXACTLY how to think about the Bible) will remain open.

There are numerous events planned for the next few weeks, including retreats, and a talent show on March 28.

FSB is wildly expensive to get a degree which cannot be used outside right-wing Christian churches.

- Democrats and other critics of the president were concerned that Trump’s businesses would receive bailout money because the tourism industry is one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus.

Let’s all keep our fingers crossed and hope that things were under control in Hubei Province, China….because those people are now leaving en masse.

Huge crowds jammed trains and buses in Hubei province on Wednesday as people seized their first chance to travel after two months under lockdown at the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak.

Strict curbs on daily life are finally being lifted, allowing healthy people to head home and see loved ones after weeks of separation.

At a railway station in the city of Macheng, there were long queues of people lugging suitcases in the rain as they queued for trains.

The New York Times editorial board:

… has urged President Trump to immediately call for a two-week shelter-in-place order nationwide “to protect Americans and their livelihoods” amid the coronavirus pandemic. If Trump doesn’t act decisively — and now — “devastating loss of life and prolonged, widespread economic pain” could be ahead, the board warned.

In the op-ed, published Tuesday, the board said the worst of the virus crisis had yet to hit the United States — and stressed that Trump’s desire to open the country’s economy by Easter, which falls on April 12 this year, was short-sighted.

“Everyone shares Mr. Trump’s concern for the economy. But this is not a moment for mere salesmanship, for conjuring a cheerful vision rather than facing reality. It’s a moment for providing a plan,” the board wrote.

“This crisis has not turned a corner — it hasn’t even hit yet,” it added.

As Dow wipes out over 3 years of stock-market gains, here’s a warning about calling the bottom (Marketwatch)

How much worse can it get?

That’s a question many investors are undoubtedly asking themselves after a week of historic volatility that saw stocks suffer another pummeling and drove the Dow Jones Industrial Average to its lowest close since December 2016 as the global COVID-19 pandemic promises to push the world into recession.

After all that, some investors might feel a strong temptation once the market finally shows some stability to declare that the lows are in. But some Wall Street veterans have a word of advice: Don’t!

“First, let’s acknowledge that none of us can predict when the market will bottom,” said Brian Levitt, global market strategist at Invesco, in a Friday note.

“The number of new COVID-19 cases will likely need to peak before we get there. That’s a question for the epidemiologists to answer and a challenge for Americans and global citizens to take social distancing and/or isolation seriously,” he wrote.

Rachel Bitecofer’s latest forecast shows Democrats winning the Electoral College, 289 to 181 with 69 electoral votes still up for grabs.

“If Trump had political capital to spend heading into this crisis, that would be one thing. But after the Russia investigation was followed in short order by the Ukraine scandal, Trump’s political capital tank is already on empty, with few Americans outside of Republicans capable of trusting him. Trump will be heading into the fall with the dubious distinction of being the most embattled, controversial, and scandal-plagued president to seek reelection in the history of the republic — and that was before this virus emerged to create a massive public health disaster and destroy his strongest claim for reelection: the economy.”

My town has 67 cases. We have a helicopter flying overhead from the local news outlets because the Bergen County testing site is about a mile away. So, that’s my wakeup call at 6ish in the am. The testing site closes within minutes of opening because they’ve maxed out for the day.

New drive-thru sites are now opening up elsewhere in NJ, but they too will max out because of rationing of tests. People are waiting out all night in their cars queued up to get tested because they’re rationing them (this itself can make a bad situation worse for them).

I can’t imagine him bashing then Governor Warner after the Pentagon was hit or during the sniper attacks here. Judge rules lawsuit alleging Trump threatened free press can move forward
A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that some of the claims in a literary advocacy group’s lawsuit against President Trump over his threats to retaliate against critical media coverage can proceed.

U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield wrote in a 24-page opinion that PEN America had a “constitutional standing” to pursue claims for declaratory relief against Trump’s practice of “selectively barring access” to the White House press corps, including by “revoking or threatening to revoke press credentials due to hostility to the reporters’ speech.”

Schofield also ruled that the case could proceed on allegations that Trump revoked or threatened to revoke security clearances for government officials he dislikes.

Fingers crossed this drives him nuts…

An interesting anecdote (dailykos.com):

Today I stopped in to talk with a guy I work around at the shop that his work is centered around. He’s the boss. Since the last election, there’s been a 2016 Trump campaign banner up on the wall. I have never mentioned it, cause I need to keep a good relationship with him. His workers are right there with him politically. I just move on and take care of my business and act like that banner’s not up there.

But today, he mentioned that the president was going to try to open things back up in a couple of weeks. I said that the governor was not going to let that happen. Talking again about Trump, he said “Well you and I know it’s (the early re-opening of everything) never going to happen,” then went on talking about the governor and how he was making a real name for himself with his aggressive approach to the crisis. He was talking about Kentucky Democratic governor, Andy Beshear. At that point, I glanced over at the wall where the Trump campaign banner has been for over 3 years. It was no longer on the wall. It was no longer in the shop. It was simply no longer.

Jacksonville’s Mayor (also a Rep) threatening to condemn buildings, shut off utilities if companies don’t make an effort to have employees work from home or spread workers apart if they absolutely must report to work

Also, apparently they’ve drawn ~1100 samples for testing here in JAX. I assume many test results are pending, since only 50 cases have been reported (with 12 hospitalizations & 3 deaths)

from today’s electoral-vote.com - some reasons why

The first problem is that people are still so frightened right now that they’re stockpiling toilet paper, water, and guns. You can’t just flip a switch on that. Further, many state governors continue to take COVID-19 very seriously, and would surely ignore any orders from the President that they deem unwise…There are few things he hates more than losing face.

The second, and more obvious, political problem is what happens if Trump encourages people to resume their daily lives, some of them do so, and then the epidemic gets noticeably worse…It would be as close to a scientifically controlled experiment as you can get in politics. Those spikes would be (with good reason) laid at the President’s doorstep.

Yeah I never saw him go out of his way to be a jerk to someone who had suffered a great loss. I mean he easily deserves the criticism he gets and Trump is going to make him look better than he should in history but I don’t recall him going out of his way to be callous. In fact, I saw some examples of the opposite where he understood that the criticism of him and his administration was about their actions. Him, Laura, Jenna, and Barbara were very gracious ot Barack, Michelle, Sasha, and Malia. And I think people who don’t understand why Michelle is friendly with W don’t get that. Exponential growth.

This remains the math problem that the GOP and Trump keep failing. They keep thinking that if you throw enough money at economy, it’ll overcome the disease.

Covid19 doesn’t give a shit about stimulus packages. It only wants to spread. It is far more transmissible than the flu (or ebola). It keeps doubling at a predictable rate. The death toll keeps rising at a predictable rate.

Nothing is being done nationally to stop this. It’s a haphazard piecemeal approach at the state/local level, which means that even if NY stopped all new cases today, it’ll grow out of control everywhere else and circle back to NY because we’re still having domestic travel without sufficient (or any) screening).

All of this circles back to aggressive testing, availability of testing, and the rationing of testing that limits case identification to only those who are sickest. You can’t flatten the curve without aggressive testing and social distancing/isolation.

Two weeks from now, we’re going to be deep into the shit because Trump will point to a handful of states with handful of cases (except there’ll be millions of cases not captured in the case tally).

It was pretty telling that Vlad pretty much made himself President of Russia for life. That country is going to be in chaos when he croaks. It already might be headed that way without him dying. And I for one hope Vlad is terrified. His shitty game of getting Trump elected because of his raging sexism and xenophobia and desire to get revenge on HRC and the West is why we are where we are.

My understanding of the last couple of years in the Putinverse is that he’s tired, he’s never liked dealing with domestic issues, and he did start thinking about what happens after him. However, he can’t retire, because he’s a mob boss and dictator and his enemies would destroy him. So, he considers making himself head of a council that will let him keep dictator powers to protect himself, but let someone else be president.

And, that doesn’t go over very well with the oligarchs, because now they’re unsure of their “roof” that protects them from the other oligarchs. So, the council thing gets tossed and in a tearing hurry he jams through a constitutional change to let him have another two terms, because hey who cares. He thinks he needs to have a referendum on it to get the populus on board, and seemed to be shoving the coronovirus under the carpet until the referendum date, but that seems to be overtaken by events.

So, who knows now. The coronavirus is going to hit hard in a country with poor general health and a decrepit hospital system, with a large part of the population not taking any of this seriously and paranoid about interacting with the government (for good historical reason). Oh yeah, and the new oil war which has brought their main export down to $25/bbl and weakened the ruble. This is not what Putin signed up for, but fuck him and hope somehow the Russian people make it through OK.

Dubya started losing them in 2006 when he revealed himself to be a decent person on immigration. I didn’t like the man. I found his aw shucks stuff annoying and I even went to Pennsylvania as a seventeen year old to canvas for Kerry but W never had the devoted falling that Trump did. It was often more supportive of the office than the man himself. I’d take W over Trump right now easily.

Dubya started losing them with Katrina; Louisiana and Mississippi and Arkansas are very red states, and even without electricity they saw with their own eyes that the facts on the ground didn’t match what Fox was saying about the federal response.

Spain’s death toll surpasses China’s. Italy’s death toll closes on 7000. We’re passing 800. And there’s no bending of the curve in the US anywhere since containment efforts have only had a few days or a week to be in place.

It’s just one little spot, but the curve seems to be bending in Santa Clara county in CA, where social distancing measures were put in place very early. To a lesser extent, this is true in bay counties as well.

In the meantime, our local Lutheran church remains closed.

It remains to be seen whether they will hold Easter services, but if Nebraska stays the course with banning gatherings over ten, probably not.

Central Christian Church Mesa (one of the megas near me) has gone to all online services.

Hillsong Phoenix/Mesa has gone to all online services.

But Living Word Bible Church is telling its regulars to stay home so it can welcome seekers to the church. They posted a long goddamned screed about how they were trying to obey the governor’s request. *scowl* This whole this is another one of those GAWD TOLD US TO MEET thing…

livingwordonline.com

These asshats deserve a picket, but since I’m isolating, I can’t do it. Maybe I should just drive back and forth slowly in front of the church during meetings. Or something.

I’d note that all three of these churches are greedy, tithe accepting churches, but LWBC is one of those prosperity gospel churches. Asshats every one of them.

Jen Rubin:

Biden displays nearly every quality and ability Trump lacks: Appreciation for expertise, candor, respect for fellow Americans, empathy, understanding of government, foresight (he warned about the virus as early as Jan. 27), thoughtfulness, coherence and a reverence for American values and spirit…

It is not often that the challenger in a presidential election has more experience, granular knowledge of policy and gravitas than the sitting president. Here, it is not even close. Having spotted the threat of the pandemic and urged the Defense Production Act be activated, Biden already is demonstrating he is more competent than the incumbent. If Americans cannot figure out under these circumstances which candidate has the character and capacity to look after them, then the future of self-governance truly is in doubt.

Idaho’s new rule prohibits pharmacies from dispensing chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine unless the prescription includes a written diagnosis with evidence for its use. The prescription is limited to no more than a 14-day supply for new prescriptions, and no refills are allowed unless a new prescription is furnished.

Many people have undiagnosed diseases. She well could have had an autoimmune problem that had not yet become prominent enough at her age to be noticed.

One of the Czech fatalities had metastatic cancer. He was entirely unaware of it, as were doctors until he was admitted to the hospital shortly before his death. He hadn’t sought medical services in at least four years, according to the doctors.

I realized something a few minutes ago. It’s too late to prepare for Easter Services. Just opening up closed churches and cleaning them takes a week. And remember there’s a trilogy of services-Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter. Trump wouldn’t know that, only being taken to Easter Services by his noveau riche parents. Social Strivers only attended for the Easter Parade. Good Friday/Palm Sunday was more for the really devout who went to Communion or were regular churchgoers.

That means 3 times the church is open. But these aren’t just ordinary services, florists are also involved-palms for Palm Sunday, crepes for Good Friday, Easter lilies. Choirs who have to practice for all three services. Sometimes a communion is involved-Baptist on Good Friday. Visitors streaming in and out for multiple services per day, many of them not having been there for years or weeks along with unvetted visitors. Infection vector indeed.

So last Wednesday, my sister was furloughed as AMC decided they couldn’t meet the “10 or less” guideline while staying profitable and so shut down for 6-12 weeks.

This past Monday, my dad was put on administrative leave from the engine shop he works in because he meets the “most vulnerable” criteria. He’s off work for a minimum of 3 months.

And now, my mom just got home from her own job and has been informed she’d on administrative leave until further notice. They told her they’d have her telework, but her office is not in any way equipped for such and it was mostly used as an excuse to put her on leave.

So, who’s the person in the house who’s still working and has basically been told he should be happy that he can continue to work in what amounts to a petri dish? Me. At this point, I can only assume I burned down an orphanage in a past life and this life is where I burn off all the accumulated negative karma.

The situation in the Alsace Loraine region of France is difficult — it’s one of the biggest outbreaks, after a week long evangelist revival meeting a month or so ago. A military field hospital has been set up to help the main hospital in Mulhouse, patients have been moved to hospitals in other regions in Air Force hospital planes, a special TGV will run tomorrow, filled with ICU beds to evacuate others. Hell, despite the “closure” of the German and Swiss frontiers patients are being moved from Mulhouse to Germany and Switzerland.

Yesterday she had real fear that stimulus package money would go to help the Trump crime family — and this morning was ecstatic to read that the 500 billion dollar slush fund elected officials and their relatives were barred from receiving any money.

I will have to remind her she also believed that Bernie was going to win. We both tend to be the glass half empty type of person — pessimists at heart.

Pessimists are just optimists with experience.
