The Big Question: Why Is Donald Trump Refusing to Deploy the Defense Production Act?

Politics • Views: 26,047

Today at the Washington Post, Greg Sargent (one of their best writers on the Trump crime family) asks an important question: Why is Donald Trump refusing to take the steps that could prevent mass deaths from coronavirus?

This question is forced upon us by an appearance by Rep. Elissa Slotkin on “Morning Joe,” and by new reporting that suggests we’re only beginning to glimpse the damage Trump’s failures could unleash.

Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, has introduced a new bill that would compel the president to deploy the Defense Production Act, or DPA, to direct the private sector to produce a range of medical supplies to address looming shortfalls amid the worsening coronavirus crisis.

Trump has invoked this 1950 wartime production measure but has not deployed it. Numerous states and health officials are pleading with him to do so, warning of severe equipment shortages crippling their own responses.

In discussing her bill Wednesday morning, Slotkin made a point that’s more startling than it first appears.

“I under almost no circumstances would recommend the legislative branch forcing the executive branch to enact these powers,” Slotkin said. “But the outcry is so strong that it’s pushed us to try and force the president to try to centralize the retooling of our big manufacturers.”

Emphasis mine. The question this raises is: Why must Trump be “forced” into doing this?

Why did he not do so weeks ago?

Because the government ordering companies to make certain things goes completely against the conservative ideal of the “Free Market”.

He wants to appear like he’s doing something, and when the states fail, he can turn around and blame the failure on the godless Democrats?

He thinks that red states will fare better? Never mind that the red states are behind the curve, and this is a math problem where the GOP keeps failing. They don’t care about the death toll, or people hospitalized, or anything but when they can get back to their usual graft/grifting/stock market manipulations.

This shit makes no sense whatsoever if one has actually read the damned bill. The additional money lasts for 4 months, after which UI would go back to the current poverty levels. And anybody who has ever been on UI or looked into applying for such knows one important thing: If you get offered a job (either a new one or your old one) and you refuse, then they immediately cancel your benefits and you’re SOL.

People are not ending up on UI because they want to be there, many could be there for longer than the time the bill grants the extra money, but leave it to Repubs to worry that people might want to avoid the “dignity of work.”

There is no overboard. There is only more and pain and suffering if these jackals maintain any power. And they may, because cable news is a shit show, AM radio belongs to the haters and our regular TV and print news is gutless and owned by those whose sole purpose in life is to maintain good relations with Nazis.
It’s all reality TV and the mindless must be preserved.

Also found a Social Distancing Scoreboard that grades each county in the US by the percentage of people staying home. Complicated, but good stuff.

So death rate in Germany is creeping up: 205 out of 37,098. My guess is that once all their cases have resolved, the CFR will be about 1.5% Of the 37,098 total, there remain 33,346 still active.

From a facebook post of an infectious disease doc at Univ. of AL at Birmingham:

On Saturday I started notifying physicians and other staff at UAB that they have contracted COVID. Today- we called more UAB employees in one day than I have called the last three days combined. I spoke with sick physicians, scared staff who have put themselves on the front line to save all of you. I know some of them will need to be admitted to the hospital, some will need intensive care…
Our hospital is filling up. We have expanded the number of ICU’s. Soon we will turn OR suite’s into intensive care units.
We are on calls daily to increase our physician and nursing teams to care for an ever increasing number of patients, while some are “on the bench” because they have fallen ill with COVID. We are cycling teams trying to maintain staffing, preserving our staff, and trying to keep everyone healthy.
We have doctors making hard decisions about time while they are on hospital service for 2 weeks at a time. I have to decide if I will live away from my family when I am on hospital service so that I do not expose them (including one with asthma and one on immunosuppressants). Know that your healthcare providers are making many sacrifices at this time, working extremely long hours, time away from family, and worrying that it is still not going to be enough. We are running as fast as we can and we can’t keep up.
I know everyone is making sacrifices and I thank you. Please shelter in place. This will last a few months. check in with your family and friends via FaceTime or Zoom meetings. Take one trip to the grocery store per week. Help us help you.

Florida coronavirus update for Wednesday: DeSantis won’t issue stay-home order as cases surpass 1,600, Orange stay-home order begins Thursday

Speaking in Orange County, where a stay-at-home order goes into effect Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis stood by his position that a statewide shutdown to protect against the coronavirus isn’t necessary. He said the stay-at-home mandate is better suited for hard-hit areas of the state such as South Florida.

Florida’s coronavirus case count shot up by more than 200 Wednesday, a day after a the Senate and White House reached a deal for a $2 trillion stimulus package meant to put $1,200 per adult and $500 per child into Americans’ bank accounts to stem the economic fallout from the pandemic.

[…]

Though several counties have done shutdown orders, they are a patchwork, both in geography and nature.

DeSantis is going to hold out until he gets the praise (and money and ventilators, etc.) from Trump he wants.

A blunt headline from NBC:

Americans don’t know what to do about coronavirus. Neither does the president.

Many of Trump’s allies and critics see a commander-in-chief who is actually torn by competing instincts, advice and political pressures, which helps explain why he is delivering confusing messages to the American public while using only some of the powers available to him to fight the spread of the disease.

And they have the gall to suggest that people would, if given an extra $1,200 per paycheck (once), choose to stay home rather than work (forever).

The world ‘squandered’ its first opportunity to stop coronavirus: WHO

The time to act to fight the novel coronavirus was one or two months ago, and countries “squandered” the opportunity, according to the director-general of the World Health Organization.

Speaking at a press conference Wednesday, WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said his organization had been warning for months about the dangers of COVID-19, but countries didn’t take action.

“If you remember, we have been saying for more than two months now, this virus is public enemy number one,” he said.

Let’s not over-complicate this.

Several Republican Senators are holding up the bipartisan Coronavirus emergency bill because they think the bill is too good for laid off Americans.

They should add a measure making it dependent on means testing and mandatory drug tests…that would please them.

“…I find the utmost of selfishness to hold up this huge bill that’s going to help working people because some states pay so little in unemployment compensation that in our effort to craft something that would be fair to the majority of workers that some of the workers in these states, some of the poorer states will get a little bit more. I think that speaks a lot to what these people are talking about. Were it not for the 72 hours that we fought for workers and for what Chuck Schumer refers to as the Marshal Plan, the same people who brought us the $1.5 trillion in tax cuts for the richest people and companies in our country would be getting what they want. Once again, very little for the workers, and that’s why we fought so hard. “

Welcome to Duh Apocalypse Everybody! Yay!

I went to my local Kroger store during senior hour at 7 am and managed to find some things, but I’m getting scared about the disruption of some supplies. No meat hardly at all. Dairy is mostly ok, but stuff like cottage cheese and coffee creamer are getting very low. Bread was pretty much wiped out. Produce was well stocked, but barely any frozen or canned veggies or soups or anything. No rice, no beans, cereals are running low. I think we’re ok, except for milk maybe, for about 3 weeks.

I’m terrified of where we’ll be in that time. What if food supplies dry up? Or medicines are delayed shipment because too many workers get sick? When this settles many proverbial heads need to roll. Bigly.

I’m trying not to panic and let my anxiety do it’s thing ,but holy shitmuffins peeps, this is just off the rails messed up? Our system has some seriously huge holes in it that need repaired. as to the line of succession

The West Wing covered it (authoritative right?)

With the office of Vice-President vacant after John Hoynes’s resignation due to a sex scandal, the amendment requires that following the line of succession, the Speaker of the House, Glen Allen Walken, take over the presidency temporarily. After Walken is sworn in as President, conflicts have already begun between him and President Bartlet’s staff, one of the reasons being that Bartlet is a Democrat and Walken is a Republican. Bartlet tries to calm Walken, stating that the staff are all trying to resolve the situation, to which Walken replies “You are relieved, Mr. President.”

further, Bartlett was neither dead nor physically incapacitated in any way. he did it voluntarily because his daughter was kidnapped and he felt he was too distracted to pay attention to natsec implications

Food supplies and so on will not dry up. The supply chains are robust and the food sources themselves are not going away. Even if half the workers are out there will still be more than enough food. The US is a net exporter and there has been no concomitant environmental catastrophe like the Dust Bowl to hurt the food supply. The only reason there is any shortage of anything right now is because almost everyone has panic bought 3x of things they might not even normally use.

The supply of medical equipment is what is going to kill us, and particularly people like me. And the solution for that, for the average person, is to not use any supplies, by staying home and not getting sick.

I’m afraid we don’t make those distinctions. That’s not ethical and not what we signed up for.

Now, we are imperfect. Too many of us still treat people differently based on things like race, obesity, or other value judgements that we should not make. But most of us are still ethical. And we’re not going to look at someone with a self-inflicted injury and let them suffer because of that. Difficult choices like the ones people are making right now in New York and Italy are miserable. But we aren’t going to decide that somebody is less deserving because they are selfish or stupid. That would disqualify most of us at least at some point in our lives.

Trump really is a psychopath and narcissist. Absolutely the only thing that ever matters to him about anything is whether or not he thinks he is ‘winning’.

The only reason we haven’t had a mass launch of US nuclear weapons is because Trump hasn’t yet seen that as a ‘win’ for him. Ditto for starting world war III.

The man is intrinsically disordered, and in a sensible society he would have been institutionalized for life to keep him from damaging normal people. Instead, because of a similar derangement of the Republican Party, and stupid US worship of wealth/celebrity, we have this shitbird as president.

- i heard an interview on the radio about the food supply chain. it’s mostly ‘intact’ and functioning. in fact producers/packagers are repackaging what otherwise would have been bulk going to restaurants into consumer sized and redirecting the flow… after all where’s all that product gonna go? take out wouldnt nearly cover it.

- different regions are experiencing different kinds of shortages - due to both your oh so inconsiderate neighbors, and regional/cultural/ethnic differences

- there are three publix stores within 2 miles of us. things are similar in all three. no meat or chicken or pork unless you want chicken feet. for some reason they have lots of those. plenty of seafood. no paper or cleaning products. lots of soup. no pasta. lots of cheese, ice cream about 50% cold milk on the shelves. no boxed milk. 60-75% fresh produce, with spotty empty spaces. lots of food at the deli counter but no one waiting there to be served.

there is plenty of food, maybe not what i or someone else might want specifically but more than enough to eat.

on a whim we went to whole foods. similar no pasta etc. mostly full produce. the big difference is they had a lot of meat and chicken. compared to publix 2 miles away. at least 30 whole chickens, packages of parts (bell and evans) and lots of frozen stuff. plenty of fish too - fresh and frozen.

yes, im guessing. there is no food shortage. it was a run on emergency stocking up (valid) and scare hoarding (fair - valid) and hoarding for profit (assholes).

i think it’s mostly temporary and localized and within another 2 or so weeks there should be way more of a ‘normal’ look.

It’s one of the reasons I’m rather hoping that Dante’s Comedy turns out to be more than metaphorical bit of architecture. I’m fairly confident I’m Purgatorio material, so I feel somewhat safe in kind of hoping that, without redemption, many Republican senators find themselves getting squeezed through the shite, with maybe a couple of union-mandated tea breaks from time to time.

When I was out in Palm Springs, we’d stop there to get gas. To see the crowds lined up like that is insane, and little different than the lines to enter customs control at the airports where they’re funneling everyone through to get screened for covid19 (putting sick, potentially sick, and healthy people in close contact with zero social distancing in effect).

Though the “ not liking” part is certainly valid: and is probably related to Trump’s lack of interest in traveling abroad: He likely considers having to share a stage with grubby foreigners demeaning, and he doesn’t get the insane adulation he does at his MAGA rallies, which is all he cares about.

My thoughts on why he’s not doing it, could be an any/all situation:

a. there’s no way for him (or his family) to profit off of it
b. he really does think this is all a hoax
c. he doesn’t care because he’s (allegedly) not sick and/or if he does get sick he knows he’ll get treatment because he’s POTUS, so fuck everyone else
d. someone he doesn’t like told him he should do it, so he’s not doing it out of spite
e. someone he likes (and/or the last person he talked to) said he shouldn’t do it because reasons, so he’s not doing it
f. he wants this to be bad so he can argue that we have to shut down immigration and global trade completely in order to make America a third world country great again

If it was only one reason and not some combination, I’d say (a) is like even money; (b) is probably like 3:2 odds, (c) is probably like 7:2, (d) is 5:4 odds, (e) is 4:1, and (f) is maybe 9:2

re: #171 I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)

As someone in an area where we’re probably 2ish weeks ahead of everyone else in terms of grocery store panic: it is evening out. Not perfect yet - there’s still very little pasta and the bread selection can be hit or miss. Dried beans and rice are still nowhere to be found (but dried beans were also really hard to get in January so …not sure what was up with that). Soup depends on if it was on sale or not (Campbell’s was and so there was nothing on those shelves, but Progresso wasn’t and was available). Meat is type-dependent. Frozen veggies …well, if you wanted chopped spinach you were in luck. Pretty much everything else is still MIA. Milk is low but has been available every time. Other dairy is doing pretty well at this point. Produce was good except for the mushrooms, last time.

On the flip side, I am not trying to go at any particular time of day or anything, so it might be I’m hitting after the restocking. I know I’m still stocking up a little more than normal, because I’m trying to only have to hit a store once a week - and normally I would do two stores. And since there are things I need at each store, it means sometimes I’m trying to shop for two weeks at a given store. I’ve been able to get everything I need by being willing to be adaptable though.

(No sign of toilet paper yet but we’re set for another month or so before I start worrying.)

See, I would have bought collard greens if they had any (mr. klys eats on a regular basis), but no. It was pretty much chopped frozen spinach or bust.

It has been the party of Trump for at least twenty years, even before there was a Trump in politics. It has been a party that values nothing except hating whatever enemies it imagines, cherishing nothing except the supremacy of the rich white male. Donald Trump is just their id - a human so obscene that he says the quiet part out loud, and so they feel free to say the same.

Average age of SC #coronavirus patients: 52

On the supply front, my third try got me two big tins of powdered milk, so all I’m missing is hand sanitizer. (I have the stuff I made, but it’s too sticky.)

What that means is that for the first time, I’ve completed the “food” part of the earthquake preparation kit, leaving me pretty well set, as that was the only part I had neglected.

That also means I won’t have to drink the damned powdered milk without an emergency.

re: #153 Renaissance_Man

Food supplies and so on will not dry up. The supply chains are robust and the food sources themselves are not going away. Even if half the workers are out there will still be more than enough food. The US is a net exporter and there has been no concomitant environmental catastrophe like the Dust Bowl to hurt the food supply. The only reason there is any shortage of anything right now is because almost everyone has panic bought 3x of things they might not even normally use.

The supply of medical equipment is what is going to kill us, and particularly people like me. And the solution for that, for the average person, is to not use any supplies, by staying home and not getting sick.

tell me about it. I’m a little pissed that I can’t get those little packaged stuffed chickens and stuff from Publix because elderly little basterds keep buying them up in their one hour of extra morning shopping :-)

Trump is Anti-Christ. It would make all the sense in the world for him to lead his followers into eternal death following Easter. You could not turn that into a script without having skeptical editors the world over say, “that’s too pat. No one would believe it.” And yet, it could easily happen.

I hope Biden is vetting her. Lots of great choices tho.

I still don’t get why anyone who thinks they have a political future would want to be VP. Unless Biden flat out tells them that he’s not running for re-election in 2024, it still seems like the old proverbial bucket of warm piss. Why would anyone want to tie themselves entirely to someone else’s political fortunes?

I honestly think the Cheney/Biden profile - party elder statesman with likely no future political ambition is the smarter play. Of course, not sure how well that works when your nominee would be the oldest person ever to take the oath of office - which brings us back to the whole 1 term thing.

I really hope if anything comes of this, it shows libertarians that their fantasy world of economics is just that. And as much as I like that Amash hates Trump and voted for his impeachment, he too is an economics clown who should have actually learned economics instead of reading Ron Paul’s economics fantasy bullshit.

He actually called for checks to be given to every person (and not companies) to solve the immediate issues, and figure out how to claw it back from those who didn’t need it later. He seems to be pragmatic enough in an emergency at least on economic issues.

Universal basic income has actually had support from people across the political spectrum. MLK was for it, so was Milton Friedman. Friedman wanted to structure it as a negative income tax (if I remember correctly). Some libertarian types think it can/should replace welfare programs like unemployment insurance and food stamps.

I’ve recently come around on it, in part because I think AI is going to drastically change our economy in the next decade or two and we need a plan for when everyone doesn’t “need” to work. I also think it might make recessions less bad because people would still have some income.

Old logic doesn’t apply here is the gentlest way I can put it. We’re in an existential crisis, our basic health and safety is in the hands of a death cult and I’m fairly certain that all of the qualified candidates would feel honored to fill that roll if asked.

So I’m set up at home to work. Due to a comedy of errors, I ended up with a 55” Sony 4k as my monitor. At work I have 3 x 28” 1080 panels. This is.. interesting.

I have a 43” 4k tv. To me, it was the largest size I could see sitting close, but the front is a little smaller than I run on my monitors at work. A 55 might be big enough to overcome that. It is nice, though, a 43 is essentially 4 21 inch monitors with no edges.

For the people in that thread that want to talk about per capita numbers, New York has approaching half the number of cases that Italy has, but 1/3 the total population. If my math is right, it’s 1,556.7 cases per million people vs. 1,230 per million in Italy (per World-o-meters). Our infection rates in comparable circumstances suck. And it would be surprising if New York doesn’t see a spike in mortality rates.

The virus doesn’t appear to be mutating rapidly, researchers say, which means a vaccine — when it comes — could be long-lasting. Scientists say it has looked the same almost everywhere it has appeared, and there’s no indication that certain strains are deadlier than others.

There is some concern among those who work in commercial real estate that this could be bad:

Tom Barrack, the Los Angeles real estate tycoon, has a stark review of the commercial property market amid the coronavirus economic meltdown.

“On the brink of collapse.”

[snip]

“The economic impact, magnified by widespread total industry shutdowns throughout the American economy, could be exponentially worse than the economic effects of the 1987 crash, September 11th attacks and 2008 recession, combined. The long-term impact on the economy could be catastrophic.”

Rents stop coming, mortgages can’t be paid, foreclosures come… banks sitting on REO commercial properties is probably not particularly great for anyone (if our experience with them doing that on residential real estate after the ‘08 collapse is any indication).

‘Be prepared for another cycle’: Tense Dr Fauci warns coronavirus will come back as Trump says ‘it’s time’ to restart economy

The top health official in Donald Trump’s administration warns that the coronavirus spread in the US is likely to return once it subsides, following trends in countries that have gone through different phases of the outbreak.

As the southern hemisphere prepares for its winter season, Dr Anthony Fauci says “it will be inevitable” for the US to prepare for a second outbreak.

He says that the potentially cyclical nature of the virus stresses the need for a vaccine to be developed and tested quickly, as well as other drugs, so that there is a “menu of drugs” available to combat the virus.

That social distancing map by county someone posted to show which counties are practicing that better than others seems to have a flaw: Trips you take do not necessarily mean you are not distancing yourself.

I note that the Nebraska county map shows a grade of F in every county I-80 runs through. For example, it shows Sidney (in Cheyenne County, pop. 6,100) an F while it shows Scottsbluff (in Scott’s Bluff County, pop 14,000 plus Gering and Terrytown attached to it with another 6,000) with an A.

My county (Morrill, which borders Scott’s Bluff and Cheyenne) it gives a C.

If someone in Scottsbluff has to travel to the grocery store, they won’t have to travel more than a mile or two. If I have to travel to the grocery store, the nearest one is sixteen miles away (and if they’re closed, sixty miles away).

This fear that people with a job lost to Covid19 might get too much money from a monthly unemployment check…

It makes sense if you believe that people have a fixed value, and some people just never deserve extra because they’re the wrong type. And subsequently giving them “too much” to The Wrong Kind Of Person is either immoral or impractical.

Which drags me back to one of my preferred talking points: conservatism believes in inherent hierarchy, but not any specific hierarchy or set of standards, just whatever pyramid schematic puts them at the top. We watch in real time as they experiment with different hierarchical arrangements, taste-testing pseudointellectual explanations, but they’re never going to pick one when “any that works in this moment, any other that works in the next moment” is available.

As of 48 hours ago, “Who Is A Valuable Person” has contracted…again…and we’re watching the float of a new, slimmer hierarchy model in which are identified new categories of Wrong Kinds Of People—the old, the immune compromised—who need to suffer and die to maintain the status quo.

Same behavior, different manifestation; the only thing that doesn’t change is the assumption that they’re Right (correct) and Right (moral) a priori. Power justifies itself.

Oh yeah, and in a blast from the past, Hickman Farms, one of Arizona’s largest egg producers, is going to house its leased convicts on its own property due to the coronavirus.

In an extraordinary move, the Arizona egg behemoth Hickman’s Family Farms is moving more than half of its inmate workforce out of prison and into company housing closer to its barns so that it can continue to use prison labor to produce eggs during the coronavirus pandemic.

Those workers are slated to be 139 women, longtime Hickman’s workers and minimum custody offenders who would otherwise be incarcerated at Perryville Women’s Prison in Goodyear, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections.

The Arizona Department of Corrections and Hickman’s decided that housing the women on-site was “necessary” during the pandemic “to control the potential spread of COVID-19 to thousands of other inmates,” ADC said in a news release Wednesday.

Yeah, I don’t care what they call it, it’s still indentured servitude and convict leasing in the name of cheap eggs for Arizona.

you lead from in front
you lead from the top

even though there’s no ‘enforcement’, the tone from the top is heard and understood.

witness the various states vs each other
and the entirely falling down on its face federal response

the trump admin is losing because they cant/wont take their eye off the politics of it

This.

I am no fan of Governor Ricketts’s political positions or economic policies, but he has been leading on this from the beginning.

He constantly asserts that all of Nebraska is in this together, and the state will suffer immensely if people here do not follow practical medical advice to flatten the curve (a term he uses in press releases and statements).

He’s given the regional public health districts the authority to go beyond what he has ordered if they deem necessary based on medical and scientific advice, hence the Panhandle on lockdown from even the rest of the state.

I’m not that worried about the places that are traditionally takeout - pizza joints should do well. It’s the other restaurants, the ones that never really supported takeout/delivery in the first place. And all the places that only did takeout as a side gig.

We have a ton of great restaurants that fall into that group, and we’ll do our part to help them out best we can, but we do want to make our own food too - so we’ll order in 1-2x a week to mix things up a bit and give some variety.

Here in NJ, I’d steer you to a couple of great thin crust joints: Kinchley’s tavern in Ramsey; S Egedio in Ridgewood, A Mano in Ridgewood, and Nelly’s in Waldwick.

I haven’t tried Bogie’s Hogie’s pizzas (in Hawthorne), but their hoagies are among the best you’ll have anywhere, and their pizza offerings started up earlier this year.

The problem is what happens if the owners don’t have liquidity to cover their mortgage and other payments in the meantime? If the banks start foreclosing, the owners are fucked. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see banks evict non-paying tenants post foreclosure.

That’s what I was saying earlier.

Are people honestly too scared of him to tell him he looks like a fucking clown?

The deference paid to Donald fucking Trump, of all people, is the most revolting and surprising part. I’ve thought about this a lot.

Donald Trump is not a charismatic or powerful man. He is not charming, likable, or even menacing in the style of a mob boss. He is buffoonish, cowardly, and pathetically needy. It is blindly obvious to any objective viewer that he is little more than a weak, narcissistic bully. Yet people with much more education, much more gravitas, cower in fear rather than cross him, contort themselves and sell their souls out of loyalty to a man that is incapable of even being aware of it, much less returning it.

The reason, as far as I can tell, is that they instinctively defer not to Donald Trump the man, but to what Donald Trump actually is - the avatar of white selfishness and greed. He is the blank slate upon which all of the worst impulses that American conservatism dreams of are writ large - loud, crass, hateful and on TV every day. They defer to that because it is the same thing that exists at their own core, that they wish they could be all the time if not for the thin veneer of civilisation that has been imposed upon them. And all of American culture strains as this man demonstrates what is at the core of a sizable plurality of white Americans, and they try mightily to insist that it is righteous, just as it has always been.

Biden already said he would not run for reëlection when he first announced. Originally that turned me off toward him, but in his case I now see it as potential to bring up a younger vibrant Democrat in 2024.

It was Trump’s failure and his alone. He surrounded himself with know nothings who were incompetent and unqualified to do the job. He didn’t take the warnings seriously, and still doesn’t take the situation seriously.

Even as we push to 1,000 dead from this disease, he’s acting like it all goes away in a few weeks and he can get back to doing rallies and profiting from his golf and hotel businesses that are currently shuttered across the nation thanks to state/local actions.

It was also the failure of the Republican Party. None of them would remove him from office when they had the chance, and at the federal level virtually every one of them supports what he says, or makes suggestions that people have to die on the altar of capitalism.

The whole ideology of conservatism and the party that supports it is rotten to the core.

The Nebraska Unicameral was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak. Senators were called back into special session to deal with a specific emergency funding bill to deal with the crisis here.

Senators pass emergency funding for pandemic relief (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

With a unanimous 45-0 vote on Wednesday afternoon, Nebraska state senators approved $83.6 million in emergency funding to help battle the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic in the state.

District 48 State Senator John Stinner of Gering, who sponsored the legislation, said the Legislature added another $25 million in unobligated funds to the bill, to be held in reserve for any unforeseen expenses. If unused, they would be returned to the state’s Cash Reserve Fund.

“It’s a significant number,” Stinner said. “A lot of people are concerned about getting the appropriate funding and also the equipment we need to fight this virus.”

The money is transferred from the state reserve fund to a special fund housed within the state’s military department.

IIRC, Carter’s polling was doing just fine until after the Desert One rescue attempt failed, and then things dragged on. What’s the point where Trump’s ratings crash, if that’s even a thing now?

After all, Trump’s polling didn’t crater despite impeachment, the GOP coverup, or anything that came before or since. 9/11 rally effect helped Bush, but that wore off once thousands of Americans died in Iraq and no end in sight.

What’s the equivalent here? Thousands dead from covid19? I’m not sure even that will be the turning point. We’re at 1,000 (or will be by morning). With the current trends, we’ll be at the 9/11 death toll in just a few weeks, unless a bunch of nursing homes and retirement communities get it (oh, one in NJ just did), in which case it comes sooner.

There’s no flattening of the curve here, because there’s no nationwide effort to do so. States are doing it haphazardly, and some just aren’t taking it seriously (compare TN to KY for a direct comparison side by side). Effective leadership has consequences, but the GOP doesn’t care. They’re all in on the Trumpists, as if this is the End Times they’re looking for. Fuck them all with a rusty pitchfork sideways.

Let’s give Ted Koppel some credit for Carter’s polling being so hideous. “America Held Hostage, Day xx” was an hour every night, on ABC, back when all of television was 6 channels in the biggest cities (and less than that everywhere else)

I had a cremation done, and remains shipped across the country along with all pickup from the morgue & multiple certified death certificates for $865 a year ago (54 weeks to be exact). In Fort Lauderdale FL
