SARS is an airborne virus that is more lethal than Covid-19. In 2003, there were 8096 cases and 774 deaths, in 29 countries. How did they manage to bring it under control and prevent it from becoming a pandemic?

re: #5 Hecuba’s daughter

According to [Dr. Christine Kreuder Johnson, a UC Davis professor of epidemiology and ecosystem health and researcher on USAID’s Emerging Pandemic Threats PREDICT project.]

“…contact tracing — or monitoring people in close contact with those who contracted it — was really effective with SARS, largely because symptoms were severe and therefore easier to identify and contain.

In addition, Schleiss said the SARS virus didn’t have the “fitness to persist in the human population,” which eventually led to its demise.

Schleiss added this doesn’t seem to be the case with COVID-19, which seems to be able to spread and thrive in the human body.”

Our country may currently have morons in leadership — but what about the rest of the world? What failed between then and now? Or is it that this disease is more insidious — that it spread faster and more quickly before it was detected? I didn’t think that we played a major role in suppressing SARS, but maybe I’m mistaken.

re: #3 Ace Rothstein

This is the narcissist cycle writ large.

There’s a problem; ignore it because you’re great and it can’t really be a problem. And it’s someone else’s problem and will never cross into your territory. Resent anyone who suggests the problem is yours.

Don’t prepare. Minimize the problem. Rage at anyone pointing out the problem or the lack of planning, accuse them of being the problem, but also cover up by declaring that…actually, there was a plan and it’s okay.

Repeat that cycle until the problem is unavoidable, then start asking for help while not admitting you’re asking for help. Like…unreasonable amounts of help…and while being insistent that you didn’t screw up.

Then you get to the point where others jump in and solve the problem—and you declare you deserve all the credit.

Or if they can’t solve the problem in a timely, but also deferential manner, get angry and blame them for not being able to save you. Maybe spice things up by claiming that you had a better plan that got *ruined* by the meddling of others.

It’s not about stupidity, it’s existing in a state of mind where your own feelings are the only things that matter. Other people don’t matter unless they perform a function. Anybody that fails to serve their function is attacking you and merits a cruel response that’s “self defense.” Material threats aren’t “real” because of accurate evaluation of threat but because of big scary feelings…but any vague thing that triggers insecurity or uncertainty is an existential threat.

SARS was more deadly, but less dangerous than covid19. Basically, SARS is pretty hard to catch for a respiratory disease.

SARS doesn’t have an asymptomatic transmission period. They screened for fevers and stopped it that way.

The answer is that SARS is much more virulent and produces symptoms quicker, meaning that cases were easier to identify and isolate quickly. SARS also produced symptoms in most people who had it. Covid is more dangerous because it spreads more effectively with a long asymptomatic period, and many spreaders don’t even know they have it.

Slightly madhouse but the parties would adjust and probably forego the remaining primaries and decide on a candidate in their respective conventions.

(Edit: Oh, and probably Bernie would whine about this the whole way into the convention and still not got the nomination.)

The only reason this feels different than any of the other catastrophes in the history of the US is that we have the benefit of hindsight to know how those other catastophes worked out. When people woke up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor or the depression, they had to get through it moment to moment like we have to now.

Covid is more dangerous because it spreads more effectively with a long asymptomatic period, and many spreaders don’t even know they have it.

The issue is that covid is effectively using the base (and it is the base strategy because it often works) from Plague Inc, high infectivity low severity, low lethality. The good news is that covid isn’t going to suddenly “evolve” into causing total organ failure, but the bad news is that it is going to remain painfully good at flying under the radar unless we are painfully paranoid.

Hey everyone I am safe and well as is my immediate family.

In some ways, that would be easiest. Pelosi becomes Madam President, the conventions choose candidates and the election goes forward.

No, the nightmare is Biden wins but dies before inauguration day. Then hell - probably literally- breaks loose because that’s when the Fascists make their move.

Amazon is owned by literally the richest man on the planet! He can afford to give all his employees a raise out of the cash that falls into his couch cushions!

For most people money is a medium of exchange—buying and selling goods and services, even the most luxurious and whimsical ones. But what we’re learning the hard way is that there are people who value money as a marker of power and accomplishment. So no matter how much money they have, they will always want more;their money hoard is their merit, the sign that they’re competent and good. Compared to buying fun things, that feeling of “my score is getting higher” is more important. Sure, they’ll give money…if they’re given deference, if they’re allowed to just allocate cash to the things they think are important, if they’re granted social and cultural capital. In turn, to these people all ideas that acknowledge importance external to earnings, or to suggest their money could be spent in ways that are better than massing it to keep score, are offensive, a complete inversion of their version of “what is true and good.”

Their base assumption is that they’re the best, that success with money is best measure of authority and competence, and they don’t want to hear otherwise. There’s this pattern of very wealthy people creating bubbles—thinktanks, paid-off experts, churches with bent theology—but the thing they have in common is that all the bubbles deny the validity of ways of assessing truth…other than “because a person with power said so.”

Science is good as long as science doesn’t assert something inconvenient, at which point it’s okay to create fake journals and fund frauds and hire politicians to subvert scientific consensus and the means of establishing scientific truth (testing, repetition of testing, and peer review). Religion is good, as long as it doesn’t demand self-examination or actual sacrifices (ones that sting, that cut deep)—and we can see what kind of theology they pay for.

Well, if Trump dies before the Republican convention, my guess is that Pence is not the nominee, though it’s unclear who would capture the majority.

As long as Joe is alive, he becomes the Democratic nominee, and if the fates smile on us, he becomes President.

If Trump and Pence both die soon (and we won’t be that lucky), Pelosi becomes President — Barr wouldn’t dare to intervene, no matter what crazy theories that ideologue Jack Goldsmith wants to push — but she won’t run for election.

The Democratic nightmare is if Joe dies and Bernie survives — Bernie Bros will insist that he gets the nomination.

Joe and Bernie both die — my guess is that Andrew Cuomo will capture the Democratic nomination.

Evening update from Nebraska. Notice no people on this list over seventy, and only one who is in her sixties.

Five additional COVID-19 cases were also identified in Nebraska. New cases include:

A woman in her 40s from Dodge County who is self-isolating at home.
A woman in her 60s from Washington County who is self-isolating at home. Contact investigations were completed in both of these cases and those identified as close contacts were notified. All identified close contacts will self-quarantine and be actively monitored twice daily by public health officials for fever and respiratory symptoms.
A woman in her 50s from Saunders County who is self-isolating at home and a close contact investigation is underway.
Two cases are Douglas County residents. One is a woman in her 30s. The other is a woman in her 40s and a close contact investigation is underway. For more information, go to douglascountyhealth.com .

The state total as of tonight is 68*. One case was removed from the state total due to the person residing in a different state.

All those cases are in the eastern part of the state. The Panhandle remains free of the epidemic.

I don’t know what Republicans would do, but Democrats would nominate Andrew Cuomo.

Now he wants them to help us?

It makes sense because it’s not about actually helping.

Narcissists make unreasonable demands to test who’s compliant, specifically making it harder and harder to say “yes” because there’s no end point to their need for deference.

Trashing countries and them asking stuff of them is entirely in keeping with this pattern.

One of my CERT training was on distributing emergency medicine, like in the case of an epidemic. One of the things we did learn was that if you are needing to do something in a hurry, then you ignore some things that you wouldn’t have under normal circumstances. Did the guy you just give medicine out to show up again? It doesn’t matter at the moment.

Maybe we can build in some ways to control for grafting, but you can’t in all cases. Our goal is to keep people in their houses, keep them fed, and keep the sick ones at home. You can’t control for everything right now.

34 People Connected with One Arkansas Church Have Tested Positive for COVID-19

The First Assemblies of God Church in Greers Ferry, Arkansas says that 34 people connected with the ministry have tested positive for COVID-19.

All of them were in the building during a “recent children’s event,” though it’s not clear how recently that event took place. There is a post online, however, noting a children’s event at the church on March 6.

31 infected people are members or staffers.

Two are visiting evangelists.

One is a child.

Several others are awaiting their own test results.

Pastor Mark Palenske has seen the light (from Facebook):

… I would love to have you take this medical threat more seriously. Maybe you assumed that it couldn’t happen to you, just like I did. Please adhere to the social instructions that you are receiving locally and nationally. We must keep the affected population to as low a number as possible. Our singular act of stubborn independence can have far reaching effects on someone else’s life. [March 19]
…

… There was very little in my training for the ministry that covered the full measure of what our church family has dealt with in the past few weeks. The intensity of this virus has been underestimated by so many, and I continue to ask that each of you take it very seriously. An act of wisdom and restraint on your part can be the blessing that preserves the health of someone else. [March 22]

Among the things I find very concerning about this disease is how quickly people go from healthy to critically ill and dying. SARS was like that too, but for a greater percentage of infected. This is worse, because most people are mild, but spread it farther, and those that do get very sick and die go very fast.

SARS is an airborne virus that is more lethal than Covid-19. In 2003, there were 8096 cases and 774 deaths, in 29 countries. How did they manage to bring it under control and prevent it from becoming a pandemic?

Because SARS was easy to test for: if you were infections, you had a fever and other symptoms, which could be checked at airports and ports of transit. The insidious thing about COVID is that you can be totally asymptomatic and still spread the disease.

God help us, the loonies are starting to come out of the woodwork.

A man suspected of plotting to blow up a Missouri hospital and was killed in a shootout with FBI agents was apparently frustrated with local government action to stop the spread of coronavirus, the FBI said Wednesday.

____________

FBI officials describe Wilson as a potentially violent extremist known to express racial and religious hatred and antigovernment sentiment. They say that while under surveillance, Wilson wanted to commit an act of terrorism, specifically a bombing, and had considered several targets, including a school with a large population of black students, a synagogue and a mosque.

But as the coronavirus pandemic began to take hold in the United States and local officials in Missouri issued stay-at-home orders, FBI officials said Wilson became aggravated.

“With the current health crisis, Wilson decided to accelerate his plan to use a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in an attempt to cause severe harm and mass casualties,” the FBI said in a statement.

Which is a lie. From early on the disease was called “covid” after the various medical professionals used the term, and the virologists called it SARS-Cov-2 once it was determined to be of the same family of viruses that caused the original SARS.

The GOP is trying to do is create a false history to cover for Trump’s blatant trait of bigotry.

Well, in a large part *because* it was more lethal: killing your host is not very efficient if you are a virus… More lethality also means it was taken more seriously earlier on, and it was easier to notice the outbreaks. Also, SARS had a shorter incubation period and patient were not contagious during the incubation, so you only needed to isolated people showing symptoms, while Covid-19 has many asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic carriers…

Remember, in every market, when someone loses money someone else will make money, in this case a lot of money:

American hedge fund makes $2.6BILLION from placing a $27million bet 13 days ago that the coronavirus pandemic would cause a market crash

A US hedge fund made well over $2billion from a one-off bet that the coronavirus outbreak would cause a global market crash - and less than a week after its boss said ‘Hell is coming’.

Pershing Square Capital Management hedge fund manager Bill Ackman wrote on his company’s website his firm had made $2.6billion from an initial $27million outlay the pandemic would create market havoc.

The enormous return came barely a week after Ackman claimed ‘Hell is coming’ for US business.

His firm seized upon bond market turmoil during the Covid-19 crisis, in buying ‘credit protection on various global investment grade and high-yield credit indices’.

Not good news from Detroit:

Confirmed COVID-19 cases are rising faster in Detroit than they were early on in the U.S. cities hardest hit by the outbreak, raising alarm over whether the city will see the same explosive spread as was seen in Seattle or New York.

On Tuesday, Detroit had recorded 574 cases and 11 deaths from the coronavirus in the 13 days since its outbreak began, with the first reported case on March 11. By contrast, it took New York City, the current U.S. epicenter of the pandemic, 16 days to get to that point, and the Seattle area, another hotspot, 19 days. As of Tuesday, New York City had approximately 15,000 cases and 131 deaths, and Washington’s King County had 1,170 cases and 87 deaths.

Experts agree the spike in cases, up 38 percent from Monday, is concerning. But they’re mixed about whether it’s an indicator of Detroit’s potential trajectory, noting that inconsistencies in testing make it difficult to draw comparisons to other cities. In addition, they say many areas have seen early jumps in their caseloads as more people get tested.

It never was really there.

That’s the thing - a great deal of “money” is a lie. Like “wealth” - and Trump’s so called wealth is built on a lot of lies.

To be less snarky - the reason the idea of different kind of money supplies, M0, M1, M2, etc., came about is to try and tackle the different ways in which “money” can be construed.

what happens to all that money that “disappears” from the Stock Market?

It is not a closed system. If we agree a roll of toilet paper is worth $1000 today and in 1 year it’s back to $.10 then that is deflation.

It scares the crap out of people because deflation causes people to spend less, which causes unemployment, which causes people to spend less in a spiral.

That is why they are injecting money into the system from the government. The government can effectively try to spend it’s way out of this (WW2 and the great depression) but it runs up debt. It is also inefficient. Normally we would pay down debt during times of prosperity but we cut taxes instead.

The real problem is not the stock market at the moment but the real loss of jobs. The market is just a symptom but is somewhat disconnected from the real economy.

Now what I just said has a bunch of mistakes for the economic pedantic folks but hopefully while they correct my oversimplification we will all gain more knowledge.

In the week ending March 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 3,283,000, an increase of
3,001,000 from the previous week’s revised level. This marks the highest level of seasonally adjusted initial claims in the
history of the seasonally adjusted series. The previous high was 695,000 in October of 1982. The previous week’s level
was revised up by 1,000 from 281,000 to 282,000. The 4-week moving average was 998,250, an increase of 765,750
from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 232,250 to 232,500

And they wouldn’t be wrong.

There are far more cases, and more cases per capita in the US than Mexico. We are the bigger threat than Mexico. We are far more mobile, and air travel makes this even more dangerous since they’re not doing the kind of screening necessary to stop people from flying while potentially sick.

We’re seeing nursing staff die in NYC metro area.
We’re hearing about severe shortages of PPE and the need to use makeshift PPE out of garbage bags.

But yeah, Trump’s touting that everyone has what they need to get through this.

What’ll be interesting is the per capita infection rates nationwide. NY has the highest (both total cases and per capita), but LA has 3d highest per capita rate, MS has 12th. States across the south have above average per capita rates. The midwest has average per capita rates at the moment. States that took immediate and prompt actions were able to get ahead of this, while those that didn’t saw outbreaks spread cases far and wide.

The KY vs TN example is one for the researchers to study for all time in how to do things right (in KY) and how to fail in the Trump model (TN).

I really fucking hate people sometimes. From the NY Post:

A Pennsylvania woman ruined an estimated $35,000 worth of goods by intentionally coughing all over them while the coronavirus plagues nations worldwide, a grocery store alleged on Facebook.

The woman visited a Hanover Township location of the small grocery chain Gerrity’s Supermarket before 2:20 p.m. Wednesday and coughed on fresh produce, a small section of the bakery, meat case and grocery items, the store’s co-owner Joe Fasula wrote.

Authorities do not believe the woman, whose name is still unknown, is infected with COVID-19, but will “make every effort” to get her tested, Fasula wrote. The woman is also said to be a “chronic problem” in the community.

“While there is little doubt this woman was doing it as a very twisted prank, we will not take any chances with the health and well-being of our customers. We had no choice but to throw out all product she came in contact with”, Fasula wrote.

Gerrity’s Supermarket called cops immediately, and more than 15 employees worked with the Hanover Township health inspector to thoroughly clean and disinfect the store.

“The case has been escalated to the District Attorney’s Office. They have assured me that they will be aggressively pursuing numerous charges,” Fasula said.

I hate to borrow a Trump catchphrase but it applies here: Lock her up!

Currently, the US has over 69,000 cases, and over 1,000 dead. We are likely to overtake Italy in total cases within the week. They currently have 74000 cases, but we’re seeing the cases increasing at a greater rate in the US than Italy (it’s a math problem).

The average age for a Democratic Senator is 61 years old.

Normally we would pay down debt during times of prosperity but we cut taxes instead.

aka Counter-cyclical spending. Kind of the whole idea behind Keynesian economics… when the private sector is fucked, there’s more food stamps and unemployment benefits (and in an earlier generation, WPA work projects). Government as consumer of last resort, to keep the wheels spinning until the private sector recovers and can take back the reins.

One of the problems with his recommendations, and I see this quite a bit from other health professionals, is to only go to the grocery store every two weeks.

Well, many of us can’t do that.

The advice only applies to those who go to the store in a car, because two weeks of goods is too much to hand carry.

Hmmmm…..

Why is the coronavirus so much more deadly for men than for women?

To Perlman, those dual findings strongly suggest that there’s something about estrogen that protects against the ravages of deadly coronaviruses — and he suspects it’s true for the new SARS-CoV-19 virus as well.

and

“I’m not surprised” that women’s immune systems may do things in ways that men could learn from, Pinkerton said. For years, immunologists only studied male mammals because the complexity of female hormones muddied their findings, he said.

When it comes to fighting infection, he added, “we really need to study both sexes to understand susceptibility.”

Understood. If my spouse is unable to take me to the store I use a little two wheel cart with an insulated vinyl bag for shopping. At most I can put 3-4 days worth of food in it (I leave room for a couple of ice packs if I am picking up perishables) and be able to comfortably pull it. In short, the Trump administration forced a catastrophic strategic surprise onto the American people. U.S. government waives policy requiring that students come in person to pick up free school meals

The federal government is waiving a policy that required students to come in person to pick up free school meals for the duration of the novel coronavirus-driven closures, with officials citing concerns over families’ safety.

New guidance from the U.S. Agriculture Department, issued Wednesday, allows school districts to distribute meals “to a parent or guardian to take home to their children,” according to a copy obtained by The Washington Post. The waiver takes effect immediately, and applies automatically to all states that elect to use it.

And Disney has no goddamned excuse…pure greed. Seeing pics of thousands of people in close proximity made me physically ill.

And all these people in FL have gone to everywhere in the world.

It is absolutely stunning that this is the GOP response. They are all actively trying to get as many of us killed as possible.

it must be labeled the “GOP response”
20 states have stay at home orders

These states are largely in the Northeast, the Upper Midwest, and on the West Coast. Only six of them (Idaho, Indiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont, and West Virginia) have Republican governors. Only one (Louisiana) is in the South.

re: #235 Sir John Barron

The people whining so hard that Trump never said the virus was a ‘hoax’ are basically still claiming that the virus is a hoax.

….

President Trump’s reelection campaign sent cease and desist letters to local news outlets on Wednesday threatening legal action if they refused to stop airing a Democratic super PAC’s ad suggesting the president called the coronavirus a “hoax,” Fox News reports.

it doesn’t ‘suggest’
it uses video
of trump
using the word ‘hoax’

Hmm. Urgent message from the leasing office. Virus related? Nope.

Dear Residents,

There has been an increase in dog poop not being cleaned up.This is unacceptable, unhealthy, and unfair to everyone living at South Valley Townhomes. It’s also a violation of the lease.

I’m asking every resident to keep an eye out for anyone who does not clean up after their dog.

We are tired of getting complaints from resident regarding the amount of poop on the property. When your dog is done going to bathroom, you clean it up right away, not later.

Please report anyone not cleaning up after their dog to the leasing office.

Ah. Jackasses be jackasses. Though it is a valid concern especially with lots of kids running about more since schools are closed.

(I also suspect part of the issue is that it’s non-residents letting their dogs poop on the property and not cleaning it up. After all, the dog isn’t pooping in *their* yard.)

The map depends upon those who have the Kinsa thermometers. Chances are the more vulnerable population (older folk) don’t have them, as blue-tooth and computer connected thermometers are a bit new fashioned.

And I also suspect that the younger people who may have these new-fangled gadgets are more likely to be asymptomatic.

“If it were just about helping people to get more unemployment (benefits) to get through this calamity that, frankly, the governors have wrought on the people, then I could be for it,” Massie said during a radio interview Thursday morning. “But this is $2 trillion; divide $2 trillion by 350 million people — it’s almost $6,000 for every man, woman and child. I’m talking about spending. This won’t go to the men, women and children. So if you have a family of five, this spending bill represents $30,000 of additional U.S. national debt because there is no plan to pay for it.”

We’re reversing the tax cuts you voted for, Tommy. The ones you had no problem with when you voted for them not 3 years ago. Fuck you very much.

I was also thinking whereas people normally check their temperature when they’re not feeling well, now they’re checking all the time, so you’re getting a lot more cases where nothing is wrong. But the plain fact is that for whatever reason, it doesn’t seem particularly helpful for the current epidemic.

Eclectic Cyborg  Mar 26, 2020 • 9:27:14am

Speaking of Kenny Rogers, my biggest memory related to him is rather odd. When I was young I used to have to go to the Childrens Hospital across town every few months or so to see a couple of specialists for ongoing conditions that I had.

It just so happened there was a Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurant about two minutes away from the hospital and it was one of the only restaurants in the immediate area.

My parents knew I didn’t enjoy the appointments so they’d sell me on going by promising we could get food at Roasters after my appointment. As I recall, the food there wasn’t half bad.

I realize Thomas Massie is one of the Congressional GOP caucus’s Designated Dickheads, but how can he hold up the CV relief bill all by himself? Might not Mme Speaker (and or the Majority leaders adn/or the rest of the House) have something to say about it?

There’s fewer than 218 in attendance due to efforts to control viral spread, so the House leadership intended to pass the Senate bill under unanimous consent rules. However, the rules allow a single member of the House to block passage of a bill…which Massie is saying he fully intends to do because he’s dickless.

Currently, the US has over 69,000 cases, and over 1,000 dead. We are likely to overtake Italy in total cases within the week. They currently have 74000 cases, but we’re seeing the cases increasing at a greater rate in the US than Italy (it’s a math problem).

IMO we will be number 1 by this time tomorrow in number of reported cases. It’s likely that China is lying but all we have to go on is the official record.

US virus deaths may top 80,000 despite confinement: study

COVID-19 could lead to more than 80,000 deaths in the US and overwhelm hospital capacity nationally as soon as early April even if social distancing measures are respected, new research showed Thursday.

[…]

Forecasters at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine analysed the latest COVID-19 data at a local, national and international level.

[…]

The analysis warned that based on current trends, demand for both would far exceed capacity for COVID-19 patients as early as the second week of April.

During the epidemic peak—also set for some point in April—as many as 2,300 patients could die every day, according to the IHME models.

This was the case even if the population adhered to strict social distancing measures.

“Our estimated trajectory of COVID-19 deaths assumes continued and uninterrupted vigilance by the general public, hospital workers, and government agencies,” said Christopher Murray, IHME director.

“The trajectory of the pandemic will change—and dramatically for the worse—if people ease up on social distancing or relax with other precautions.”

The other thing to remember when looking at case numbers and trying to tease out if there is a decrease or whatever is that it takes almost two weeks for that to show up in the numbers. More, if the testing is primarily done at hospital admission, since most people don’t have to go to the hospital on day 1 of symptoms. You want to see decreases across multiple days - I would say 3 at a minimum - to rule out the possibility that the change is just noise in the data.

It’s gonna be a while before there’s good news.

Which reminded me, along with Sagehen’s question, that in the Anglican tradition an ordained priest is only required for two things - consecration of the Eucharist and absolution and even the latter can be asked for in prayer by deacons or lay persons. There is really no need to stuff people into a building like sardines except to fleece them.

Right wing media still trying to minimize Covid-19. They’re jumping on a story from the UK, where one of the modelers in the white paper that so influenced the UK’s policies so far, is now saying UK deaths may come in at only 20k.

What the hacks don’t seem to want to appreciate is that the lower estimate is based on the measures in place in the UK continuing as planned, which is a long time. Part of those plans include the significant scaling up of the treatment ability of the NHS.

They are willfully ignoring the actual impact of the measures taken to date, and are just assuming any flattening is the natural progression of the virus. The reason we are seeing some areas beating projections is precisely because those areas shut things down—not because COVID-19 wasn’t as bad as believed. If we manage to beat expectations, watching these assholes vacillate between “We told you it was just the flu” and “Trump saved us from the Black Plague” will be something to behold. But if Trump comes out against social distancing and stay-at-home orders, as appears to be the plan, we won’t have to worry about beating projections.

The Yellowstone one makes me grind my teeth. The article was talking about research published describing activity over five years ago and completely sensationalizes it. Because of course. It’s much harder to write clickbait if you’re honest and say “nothing is really happening here beyond some lava shifts, none of which are actually concerning to the scientists.”

Multiple wars, thousands of Americans killed in combat, 3k dead in the initial attacks, but thousands more dead of 9/11 related illnesses, trillions of dollars spent, and we botched both Iraq and Afghanistan in the process. Overreaction? Nope. Not among the right wingers who backed those wars and actions.

Patton “No man ever won a war by dying for his country. Wars were won by making the other poor bastard die for his. You don’t win a war by dying for your country.”

The goal is to make the other bastard (SARS-CoV2) die and NOT you, that’s how you win this one.

It is one thing to send people to die in wars to secure their freedoms or protect them against tyranny.

It is another thing to let people die to protect material assets

I understand the importance of a healthy, thriving economy, but I also understand that we created the economy to serve people.

It does not, but the obligation to pray with a minyan is suspended in a time of danger.

Just back from from shopping, mostly uneventful, got most of what I needed.

In Petsmart they have blue tape marked out at the cash register to keep ample social distancing space between customers. Seems a little excessive, but obviously can’t be too careful. Better to be over-reacting at this point.

At Giant grocery they had the plexiglass up at the cash register.

Other than that, the stores were mostly empty of shoppers. But I found myself feeling anxious whenever the narrow aisles put someone too close to me.

So I think I’ll continue to make my shopping expeditions as seldom as possible.

It’s going to be pretty much that you get what you pay for. I haven’t golfed in a number of years, but had a cheap one. It was little more than a 3’ wide, 12’ long length of very thin short grain material leading to a foam raised area (about 3’ x 2’) that had the hole to aim for. Fauci spoke much, but NRO picked one sentence to run as a headline.

Also, Fauci is plain wrong. Italy didn’t have open borders, and put in restrictions before the US did. from WaPo:

Fauci is wrong: Italy did close its border to China

“Our shutting off travel from China and, more recently, travel from Europe, has gone a long way to not seeding very, very intensively the virus in our country. Unfortunately, Italy did not do that. They had an open border, they let people in.”

[…]
The Facts

On Jan. 30, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency because of the rapid spread of the coronavirus. […]
Italy’s prime minister took immediate action, declaring a state of emergency and announcing a ban effective Jan. 31 on all flights to and from China to Italy, with no exceptions. He announced this step even though the WHO advisory recommended against travel restrictions. The ban on flights also extended to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The announcement added that anyone on a flight to Italy would face health checks upon arrival. […]

Sadly, it looks like Fauci has been contaminated.

Pretty sure Italy saw an uptick in new deaths versus the last couple of days. Not sure where it compares to the peak. I think their new cases went up versus yesterday, but still down from the peak (I think).

Meanwhile, by tomorrow, we will likely have the most reported cases in the world, and we still have FAR too many populated areas where not enough is being done, whether it be testing or stay at home directives.

If we were space marines checking in on a mining planet that had lost contact with Earth and coronavirus were aliens, then Trump would be the Paul Reiser character trying to take some back to Earth in order to get the corporate economy going again.

Trump’s the kind of guy who if he saw that Dr. Jonas Salk refused to patent the polio vaccine would call him a loser.

What year is it? 2020 was like 5 years ago, right?

Hell, I’m having problems keeping track of what day it is.

To squeeze more troops into the gym, Navy medical professionals recommended measuring the six-foot distance per guidance from the CDC from the center of the bed rather than from the outer edges, meaning, that the beds are actually 3-feet apart. The CDC also suggests avoiding mass gatherings as a part of its social distancing guidelines.

re: #493 Khal Wimpo (not drinking damn fish tank cleaner)

What makes me really freak is when I extrapolate out from now, to what things will be like if this really peaks in late June, with ~100,000 deaths/day.

For those saying those kinds of numbers are science fiction, well, when we look at predictions of 2.2 million, to get to that level, we’d need 22 days of 100K/day.

What does that actually look like in the U.S.? Basically, all the worst parts of all the dystopian movies.

And that’s not even the worst-worse case, which is 8.8 million deaths.

Christ, I need a drink.

Terrible as that sounds, it is ultimately unlikely. Even Italy, the hardest hit area we know of, levelled off its death doubling rate from 3 days to about 6 days once it hit 2-3k deaths. Perhaps that’s social distancing coming into effect, or perhaps it’s just a result of modern medicine ultimately finding a way to cope with the burden once the sickest are gone. There may, of course, also be another uptick in the rate as healthcare itself starts to fail, from casualties among workers and even extreme measures not being enough.

Glad to hear you’re still doing well.

Or let’s go the other way—since people die and shit happens, let’s remove every safety feature on all cars. Let’s take down all traffic signs and traffic lights. Remove all warnings on drugs and the like. Fuck, I mean just die, right? So let’s not do anything to prevent deaths.

I mean if we can’t protect everyone, might as well not protect anyone, amirite?

Our lives should be as nature intended — nasty, brutish and short.

re: #354 Eclectic Cyborg

Speaking of Kenny Rogers, my biggest memory related to him is rather odd. When I was young I used to have to go to the Childrens Hospital across town every few months or so to see a couple of specialists for ongoing conditions that I had.

It just so happened there was a Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurant about two minutes away from the hospital and it was one of the only restaurants in the immediate area.

My parents knew I didn’t enjoy the appointments so they’d sell me on going by promising we could get food at Roasters after my appointment. As I recall, the food there wasn’t half bad.

My parents and I also had a favorite place to go after my many appointments when I was young. After we spent all day at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital we would stop at Johnny Garneau’s on the way home most times. I loved that place.
