So Iowa, whose Republican governor has been hesitant to act strongly:

Residents of Cedar Rapids nursing home test positive for novel coronavirus

Four residents of a Cedar Rapids nursing home have tested positive for COVID-19.

Heritage Specialty Care announced that officials learned Thursday four of its residents have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Two employees there had tested positive on Tuesday.

Details on the residents’ conditions were not released, but the affected residents were immediately separated from the rest of the population and will remain isolated for at least 14 days, according to a statement from West Des Moines-based Care Initiatives, which owns Heritage Specialty Care.

Covid -19 Health Update

Starting to get a little more energy, but still sleeping most of the day. Ex GF is bringing me food, but I have no taste (it looks great, plenty of nutrition).

Little interest in much. when this is over I want to quite my job and do writing/stand up full time. Fuck the machine! I’m probably not the only one who is going to make major changes as a result of this. I’m sick of all the assholes on FB who insist that we need to get back to work ASAP.

I’m learning who my friends are.

From the previous thread:

re: #325 The Pie Overlord!

I went to go look up why your’s and my picture show the top two at different values. It looks like yours is more correct, but I also found this:

Buildings four to 11 stories tall account for about 56 percent of deaths in the new estimate, Loss and his colleagues report in the Condor: Ornithological Applications. Residences that are one to three stories tall make up around 44 percent, with skyscrapers representing less than 1 percent.

washingtonpost.com

Which is probably because most birds don’t fly very high.

Birx is playing games with the math, statistics, and metrics to satisfy Trump, not the facts or scientists who actually are doing the heavy lifting.

Per capita smooths the data to compare states.
Per capita can tell where tests are being done more or less. NJ is falling behind. NY is doing better, but is in the hole. MA and WA are doing better. The South is doing worse.

But like with maps that show districts red and blue, it ignores where people actually live, so they’ll continue to ignore people to try and restart the businesses because that’s all that matters.

Just so I could watch as his pea brain processed the insult and he blew his top. Wouldn’t change anything but damn it would be so much fun.

Most recent file, updated to tonight
drive.google.com

I have added a doubling calculator. It useful for deaths, cases, etc. based on a doubling rate out to X numbers of days from now.

Lots of pictures:

Lets be straight. We’re #1. Not slowing down. No way to sugar coat this shit show.

Here’s the calculated deaths.

Here’s a table
1209 start
2.5day 3day 3.5day 4day 4.5day 5day
3/31/20 4836.0 3838.3 3254.4 2875.5 2611.6 2418.0
4/1/20 6381.1 4836.0 3967.1 3419.6 3046.5 2777.6
4/9/20 58640.0 30706.7 19344.0 13678.3 10446.3 8420.0

Its reasonable to expect 3000 deaths (9/11) by the end of the month. Its not reasonable to expect it to be better. Italy has had the equivalent of fifteen 9/11’s per capita by now. Our death rate, for now, is closer to Germany than France or Italy. Watch NY to see how we will do. I may add them in the future or not.

Whats the German super-word for “deepest sadness” and “affirming what you thought would happen all along but hoped wouldn’t”? Must be a mouthful.

Are you remoting into work? One of the reasons I can’t work from home is that there are about 4 machines at work I would have to ssh through just to get to my computer. And I would need a remote desktop. It would just take to long to do anything.

Are you remoting into work? One of the reasons I can’t work from home is that there are about 4 machines at work I would have to ssh through just to get to my computer. And I would need a remote desktop. It would just take to long to do anything.

I’m directly connected to my work network, if that’s what you mean by remoting. All of the files I need to access are centrally located network files, and the AutoCAD system is a shared license.

Today in Nebraska:
Total number of cases - 73

Cases that tested negative - 1,584*
*Numbers now include negative results from NPHL and commercial labs

No one has died. No new cases reported. The Panhandle is still free of cases. The state is still quarantining anyone who leaves the state, and the Panhandle is still quarantining anyone who leaves the Panhandle.

All Panhandle hospitals are now under armed guard at the entrances (Bridgeport, Sidney, Oshkosh, Alliance, Chadron, Scottsbluff, Harrison).

Notice how the cameras cut between Trump and the reporter - with the sound off it looks like a soap opera. Or an episode of the goddamn Apprentice.

When in the history of ever did the White House have a camera trained on the press corps? I think not only are these questions set up, they’re probably at least partially scripted. They’re producing this shit.

That they want to go back to “normal,” no matter what that looks like.

There was a post on our neighborhood listserve this afternoon from someone citing The Federalist’s bogus article on the Imperial College study and Dr. Birx’s endorsement of it. We’re destroying the economy for nothing. We need to get back to normal. He got some gentle pushback (we have a very polite community by and large) but mercifully, was generally ignored by all and sundry.
For context, we live in a community that regularly pops up on the “10 most educated places in the country” list (which is a somewhat bogus list, but we are very well educated.) I take this as meaning we have a few idiots, nonetheless, and additionally that we are doing a decent job of staying at home like we are supposed to and keeping the spread under some kind of control. (Obviously we need to keep it up for weeks more, but we aren’t having doubling rates like New Orleans, etc.)

137
dnlS  Mar 26, 2020 • 6:57:35pm

Best case scenario, we do what we can and swarmed hospitals don’t drastically increase % fatal cases = ~20k dead by mid April. Middly piddly shit = 60k+. Adding a week doesn’t make these #’s better. I want to be wrong.

Close everything that doesn’t support health, food, etc. Nonessential.

I think he wants it to run its course by October 1st (Surprise! There’s always an October surprise.) so he has a solid month to talk to and motivate his base.

I think it’s a losing proposition, because many of them will be dead as a doornail and the rest will be hunkered down eating spam and Vienner Sausages (as will the rest of us) and pointing their guns at their neighbors, who are out of toilet paper (or as the English accented world refer to it, bog roll).

If it’s any help, I asked my daughter the doctor, not about a specific video, but about the sanitizing everything that enters your house as opposed to maybe wiping down the bottle of wine you’re going to work on tonight and tomorrow and just putting the others away because you won’t be handling them for a few days, and washing your hands. She came down on the side of just doing the latter. She is not a public health expert, of course, but made it through med school and all.

Some of what he said was weird (washing fruit in soap) but overall I liked the video because it made me think. If it’s canned or paper goods, they can sit in my car, if need be.

Shipped goods (Amazon) sit untouched for a week or they come out of the outer box and then sit for a week. Cook everything (don’t eat raw anything right now). Wash wash wash my hands after touching ANYTHING that was not part of my abode already. If it comes in from outside it’s suspect.

I’ll peal any fruit and wash* my hands* before eating it. But other than that (and taking cereal out of the box) seemed a lot like common sense to me.

It isn’t feasible to leave my groceries anywhere. I wear gloves, I wash hands going out, and coming in. I have done this regime for nearly 3 weeks. I’m not sick yet. I live alone and only go out once a week.

The president is totally incompetent. He is incapable of handling this crisis. Nancy Pelosi has to take control, because she is in charge of the purse.

At this point, it is a hologram out of C3PO of Leia saying “Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope”.

re: #199 calochortus

If it’s any help, I asked my daughter the doctor, not about a specific video, but about the sanitizing everything that enters your house as opposed to maybe wiping down the bottle of wine you’re going to work on tonight and tomorrow and just putting the others away because you won’t be handling them for a few days, and washing your hands. She came down on the side of just doing the latter. She is not a public health expert, of course, but made it through med school and all.

One of the better pieces of advice I’ve finally taken is ‘don’t touch stuff in the grocery store that you’re not going to put in your cart. I’m a label reader, but I’ve realized over the last couple weeks how much I’m touching food boxes of stuff I decide not to buy. Now, if I’m on the fence about something, I won’t touch it until I know for sure I’m going to buy it.

The MAGAheads still are all hot and bothered over prescribing anything Trump says is a miracle:

Doctors have a long history of using placebos. That is what “you want to give them hope” is all about.

When they have a well-run trial, and the placebo works better than the drug, they always call it a failure for the drug. Maybe they should look at it as a victory for the placebo.

That was a biggie for me, too. Now I make a very conscious effort to not read labels or touch what I may not buy. Now it’s not “If you break it you own it”, it’s “If you touch it you’re buying it

Everything that comes in my house either goes into quarantine, or sanitized on the outside, then I sanitize the counter the bags were on. If you have a homebrew supply store and they have not been bought out (out of stock at Amazon), you can use a bucket of starsan for a sanitizer. Better than soap because you could eat the food without rinsing (but I do, just paranoid that way). I put strawberries, avocoado, and bananas in starsan after today’s food delivery. Also, starsan is reusable, just keep some in a bucket.

Lindsey’s pretty proud of himself for being a shitbag—just got an email from him proudly pointing out: (bolding mine)

The CARES Act does contain a particularly egregious provision which I strongly opposed. The provision allows some individuals to make significantly more from unemployment benefits than they would working at a 40-hour a week job. I coauthored an amendment…to alter this provision to ensure that those who were forced out of work by the virus were made whole, but would not make more than they were making while working. Unfortunately, our effort to correct this provision was defeated by a vote of 48-48. I will continue working to correct it in the weeks to come.

Sometimes the issue is that we don’t know enough about the interaction between medications and an individual; my late husband responded well to a drug for which clinical studies established that 15% of subjects had a positive response. When we attended a conference, another patient had been deprived of a medicine that worked for him because the positive response rate was too low and the pharmaceutical firm decided it wasn’t worth pursuing. One day drugs for treating certain diseases will be tailored to a person’s genetic code; but that isn’t today.

Shipped goods (Amazon) sit untouched for a week or they come out of the outer box and then sit for a week. Cook everything (don’t eat raw anything right now). Wash wash wash my hands after touching ANYTHING that was not part of my abode already. If it comes in from outside it’s suspect.

I went to Citarella today; only bought things that I’ll have to cook. None of my usual shrimp salad from the prepared foods dept, skipped my usual Sashimi. But a chicken pot pie, a couple tubs of soup that will boil before I eat it, a roast duck that I’ll reheat…

So sorry for that.

I realized after disappearing and coming back that I made it sound too harsh. I forgot to include the punchline from my mom: “She said she didn’t want to go into one, and she made sure of it.” My grandmother didn’t do anything except be herself. The house she lived in was falling apart around her, but we couldn’t get her to leave.

Yeah, but the wingnuts think Ivanka is a liberal, so that might not be a plus.

At this point, wingnuts believe exactly what Trump tells them to. Regardless of how many of their so-called beliefs they need to jettison in order to praise the god-emperor.
