Mary Chapin Carpenter Is Singing Songs From Home: Episode 3, “The Hard Way” (Live From My Kitchen)

I just loved how Angus stopped fussing around, laid down and listened when she started singing.

Mary Chapin Carpenter performing “The Hard Way” (co-starring Angus)

Good morning and welcome back to #Songsfromhome, Episode 3: Live From My Kitchen (Again)

Thank you for all of your lovely comments and for your support, I’ve been overwhelmed with joy as well as deeply moved reading everyone’s words– we may be in lock down but our hearts are still open.

Spring has begun to show itself here at the farm; the fields are greening up, the trees hint that their bare branches may soon be filling with buds, and the daffodils are running riot through the woods and rocky borders. It’s the reliable cycle of nature that brings me the most hope and calms me when I feel anxious and sad. There have been many anxious and sad days here as I know there have been for you. Please remember, when it all seems too bleak, that you are not alone.

And the world won’t stop
And actions speak louder
Listen to your heart and your heart will say
Everything we got, we got the hard way

Stay mighty!

Until the next time…

40,000 people are quarantined after ONE ‘super spreader’ preacher, 70, caused Indian coronavirus outbreak following trip to Italy

Around 40,000 have been quarantined in India after a ‘super spreader’ preacher returned from coronavirus-stricken Italy.

Up to 20 villages in Punjab have been forced into isolation after Baldev Singh got back from the Mediterranean country and died of the deadly bug.

The 70-year-old also visited Germany before going home for the Hola Mohalla Sikh festival, which sees crowds of 10,000 each day.

Mr Singh, who had reportedly flouted advice to stay at home, was revealed to have died from coronavirus in a postmortem and a week later 19 members of his family tested positive.

An official told the BBC: ‘So far, we have been

Andrew Sullivan: “Of course, there was another way available from the get-go. He could have immediately adopted a wartime presidential posture and announced an emergency response to the threat from China. From January on, he could have deployed the government’s ultimate power to get American manufacturers to produce ventilators, masks, and tests on demand, gotten the military to set up field hospitals, and announced — and even obeyed — a partisan cease-fire because of the severity of the crisis. And he could have added another layer to this by giving a speech on the danger of over-relying on China to produce basic goods, especially those essential for Americans’ health. Then a stark and clear and unwavering stance on social distancing, to buy time…”

Stacey Absolutely Gloating About Owning A Bidet:

A bidet is an amazing invention, and in some places you can get a bidet hose attachment that fits under your sink and works much the same way.

But from what I read, they were frowned upon in many nations, including Victorian England, because they were associated with libertinism and prostitutes who used them to flush out their vaginas after entertaining customers.

Which is why this wonderfully practical device never caught on very much outside France.

Let’s be honest, the corporate media knew what they were doing. They thought Trump was a joke and couldn’t get elected, so they lit into Hillary with decades of axe-grinding and grudge-nursing for their failure to bring down her and Bill during the 90s. In their minds, they were just getting a head start on what they figured was going to be 4 years of finally knocking the couple down a few pegs.

Meanwhile they downplayed Trump constantly. Trump is the most unqualified person to be a nominee by a major political party and the media totally ignored that mostly.

And when the north east lost power those few days that time, cities to the east canceled ozone alerts. I’ve been wondering if we’re seeing some effects like that now.

Yeah, long and short of it is the Berners who declared they wouldn’t vote for Biden are just screaming a little louder their “reasons” for not doing so. Oh, and the occasional Berner who tries to convince me he was really a supporter of [insert non-Biden candidate] until they were “betrayed” by said candidate’s endorsement of Biden and now are totally going to vote Bernie or just stay home in November.

Somewhat at odds with Trump’s “All happy talk, all the time” attempt to deny that there is even a coronavirus crisis, now comes word that Alabama & Arizona are planning to leave people with intellectual disabilities to die:

Alabama’s plan states that “persons with severe mental retardation, advanced dementia or severe traumatic brain injury may be poor candidates for ventilator support,” according to ProPublica. It also says that “persons with severe or profound mental retardation, moderate to severe dementia, or catastrophic neurological complications such as persistent vegetative state are unlikely candidates for ventilator support.” In Arizona, medical officials are told to “allocate resources to patients whose need is greater or whose prognosis is more likely to result in a positive outcome with limited resources.”

If everything is OK, why are Red States planning to euthanize the untermensch?

If everything is OK, why are Red States planning to euthanize the untermensch?

Thanks for the link so I didn’t have to google him.

He was an interesting man and is why I believe that the ideals of Democracy and Socialism are what we need to defeat the forces of authoritarianism on both the left and the right. Fascist reactionaries and Socialist/Communist revolutionaries are both deadly to a healthy free society. The way forward is incrementally within the established order but that doesn’t mean we can’t push hard for real progress.

Marx gave us the analysis to go behind that.

Groucho and Bugs remind us that the Trickster is the best way to bring the Creator back into the world and gain those goals with a smile on our faces, again defeating both reaction and revolution.

Heh, looks like Alex Jones is on the hook for legal fees because of his Sandy Hook frivolous lawsuit appeal:

That means that Jones has now been assessed nearly $150,000 in legal fees in two cases — one for defamation and another for intentional infliction of emotional distress — brought by Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, was one of the 20 first-graders killed along with six school staff members in the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Jones and others on his InfoWars conspiracy news site have portrayed the mass shooting as a hoax.

Heslin’s lawsuit contends that a June 2017 report by InfoWars reporter Owen Shroyer — which claimed that Heslin could not have held his dead son in his arms as he has said — was based on a deceptively edited interview with a medical examiner and was intended to buttress the InfoWars narrative that the mass shooting was not what it appeared to be. Shroyer is also named in the suit.

Nothing to see here—move along:

A longtime Republican fundraiser sent an email to his clients on Thursday abruptly announcing that he would no longer be working for them.

The reason: He saw an opportunity to capitalize on the coronavirus response.

“I don’t want to overstate, but we probably represent the largest global supply chain for Covid-19 supplies right now,” he said. “We are getting ready to fill 100 million-unit mask orders.”

The company, Blue Flame Medical LLC, was formed Monday in Delaware, according to state records. Its website says it sells coronavirus testing kits, N95 respirator masks, “a wide selection” of personal protective equipment and other “hard to find medical supplies to beat the outbreak.”

And, such a warm, friendly close…

“After this email, I will be unreachable,” he wrote. “I wish you the best of luck in politics and life.”

SPIT.

Two points: It’s the “rally round the flag” effect in action and he’s in the early weeks of a national crisis and he’s barely budged above his previous ceiling of 43-44%. For comparison’s sack, Carter went from 39% to 53% in the weeks immediately after the Hostage Crisis began.

There’s also a not insignificant amount of cognitive dissonance going on, especially among GOPers who think Fauci is trustworthy, but Trump is too. That can’t be true, because Trump consistently contradicts whatever Fauci says. Even when Fauci tries to slow roll things to stay relevant, Trump contradicts almost immediately.

So there’s that.

Also, the crisis isn’t really hitting evenly yet, not in a way that is going to drive home the seriousness of the situation to everyone. At the moment, understanding how Trump has fucked up requires that you look at reality and think critically about it.

In another few weeks, it’s going to be a lot more obvious to (more) people what’s going on.

So legitimate question…
If they are gonna put soldiers along the Canada/us border…have they thought of how the akwasasne mohawk native American tribe is going to react? They are major stake holders and owner of part of the border crossing here in very north New York. They shut down the border when Canada wanted to arm their border patrol.
Has anyone asked their opinion I wonder….because it is a fairly big voice in the area.

re: #163 danarchy

This is a disturbing poll, I think it is the first time I have seen his approval rating above water in a poll that is not rasmussen.

docs.google.com

About Trump’s Approval Rating…

At the moment, Donald Trump’s approval rating is holding steady, and perhaps even inching up a bit…

Both writers point, in particular, to the latest Gallup poll, which has Trump with a 49% approval rating. Even on its surface, however, this “analysis” is, to be blunt, silly…

In fact, his numbers right now are almost exactly the same as they’ve been all year, moving around within the margin of error, and between his usual very low ceiling and usual very high floor.

…the interesting thing is not how high it is (or how it’s on an upward trend). No, the interesting thing is actually how low it is.

Whatever gains a president makes during a crisis usually recede afterward.

…—it’s called the rally ‘round the flag effect. And as we point out above, we think the real story of Trump’s numbers right now is that there’s either no rally going on right now…or if there is, how incredibly modest that rally is.

I spent most of my life in Canada no more than an hour from the U.S. border. It was always taken for granted that we could cross freely and that this was one of the greatest things about the close relationship between the two countries.

I used to go on annual trip with my grandparents to Lake Placid, NY. In college my buddies and I would cross to go to Football and hockey games.

The thought of a military presence at the Canada/U.S. border just fucking nauseates me.

Agreed. I have gone to Cornwall aces games and many concerts in Montreal.
The reservation is there right next to the crossing. And they own Cornwall island and have successfully upheld and negotiated the treaties put forth, sometimes with threats of violence and shutting down that crossing. Putting soldiers along the border would not be the wisest of actions.

I don’t care about the new “positive” polls for Trump.

Most of the deaths that are coming from the virus will happen without family near, with the victim unable to communicate their goodbyes by phone because of the breathing tube. Social distancing will make funerals a sad small affair, if they are allowed at all in some places.

In the coming months as the death toll skyrockets the nation will for someone to blame. The obvious target it Trump. Trump himself is already backing off of calling it the China Virus so that target is potentially removed. No, Trump will get the blame, and as hard as he tries to blame shift the truth is he was in charge. Biden’s campaign can never lose sight of that face. Hammer it home at every opportunity.

I do not want Trump to lose in November.. I want him destroyed. I never want to hear the name Trump again unless it is in a court room or obituary.

Looks like Till Lindemann of Rammstein doesn’t have COVID-19 after all.

German industrial metallers RAMMSTEIN have shot down a report that singer Till Lindemann has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

Earlier today, German newspaper Bild reported that Lindemann was in intensive care in a Berlin hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Several hours after the Bild report was published, RAMMSTEIN posted a message on the band’s social media clarifying Lindemann’s condition and denying that he was infected with the new coronavirus.

RAMMSTEIN’s statement reads: “Yesterday evening Till Lindemann was admitted to a hospital on the band’s doctor’s advice. He spent the night in intensive care but has been moved as he is feeling better. Till has tested negative for the coronavirus.”

Lindemann had reportedly returned to Berlin last week after a performance in Moscow, upon which he suffered from a lung infection as well as fever, prompting his stay in intensive care.

Restaurants in Southern California are doing to-go and/or delivery alcoholic beverages (apparently food purchases are required too). It’s a change from how things have been around here when it comes to alcohol sales. Usually, if the place doesn’t have a fenced/gated patio, you can’t even take alcohol outside. But local governments have been easing the restrictions.

Keep an eye on Brazil - they could emerge as a COVID-19 epicenter real goddamn soon.

After the first confirmed case of coronavirus in Brazil on February 25, Brazil experienced an explosion in hospital admission records for people with severe respiratory failure, according to data from Fiocruz.

That week, 662 people were hospitalized in the country with acute respiratory disease, with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.

In the week between March 15 and March 21, the number of new hospitalized patients had already jumped to 2,250 patients, according to the projection made based on official notifications sent by public health units and hospitals, and some private ones, from all over the world to the Ministry of Health.

Time magazine leaving out some important info:

Utilizing Defense Production Act, President Trump Seeks to Force General Motors to Produce Ventilators

The Detroit automaker is farthest along in the effort to make more of the critical breathing machines. It’s working with Ventec Life Systems, a small Seattle-area ventilator maker to increase the company’s production and repurpose a GM auto electronics plant in Kokomo, Indiana, to make the machines. The company said Friday it could build 10,000 ventilators per month starting in April with potential to make even more.

What Time leaves out: Ventec and GM had already bid on supplying the government thousands of ventilators when the gov’t put out a request with a short 24 hour turn around to bet bids in. But the Administration rejected the bid because they thought the cost was too high. So now, after that mess up, Trump uses his office’s power to produce the ventilators. Ventec and GM could have been farther along if the Administration would have just done the contract initially.

We just opened our first dedicated coronavirus hospital today, with 90 ICU-capable rooms in a state that only needs 250 more to be able to weather the storm. I think we’re going to make it.

There’s an oldies station in the Twin Cities that started up not too long ago and grabbed the call letters from one of the TC’s two classic 60’s AM stations, WDGY. They’re low budget to the point that they only have two non-shouty DJs (one for morning drive and one for evening drive). All of the ads are for local businesses and low tech. They overplay a lot of songs, but it’s still pretty good. Definitely a throw-back experience.

‘We were not given a warning’: New Orleans mayor says federal inaction informed Mardi Gras decision ahead of covid-19 outbreak

NEW ORLEANS — More than a million dancing, singing, bead-catching celebrants packed the streets of the French Quarter and other venues across this city in the weeks leading up to the sprawling open-air party that is Mardi Gras.

There was little worry during the February festivities about the new virus that had infected a few dozen people in other parts of the country. The city’s top health official believed the flu “is far more dangerous right now than the coronavirus,” she told the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate newspaper.

Thirteen days later, on March 9, Louisiana reported its first case of covid-19. Then came another, and another. Clusters broke out in several nursing homes. The cases popping up across the state were not easily linked to each other, meaning that a galloping community spread was already underway.

Well, Valencia County just reported its first official COVID-19 case, a 70 year old man in an unidentified community. While this county is small by New Mexican standards, I think my little village may have the largest population in the county. We certainly have a much larger population than the City of Belen. If I had to guess, I would suspect that the victim is probably somewhere in the stretch between Isleta Pueblo and Belen (Isleta Pueblo, Bosque Farms, Peralta, Los Lunas, Tome, Adelino, Las Chavez, Rio Communities, and Belen).

And I have heard stories of this from various quilters. I may have visited two quilt stores in the same small town in Oregon on our road trip just before this all started and ended up showing the one fabric I’d bought at the other. She may not have regarded that as the most helpful since she decided she needed some of it too. Oops. (I, of course, had to support both, and got a lovely selection of blue batiks there.)

It makes me wonder as to the reliability of the various tests that have surfaced around the world. I have not seen any data on false negative or false positive rates, and I suspect that no real research has been done on them given how quickly things have moved. I am not really looking at number of positive cases as a reliable indicator anyway at this point, and more at death and hospitalisation rates.

I haven’t heard of people with symptoms testing negative. I’ve seen people who were in situations where they thought they might have caught it test negative.

I’m sure there are some false negatives floating around out there. The lower the viral load, the less accurate the testing is - so catch someone early enough (or late enough!) in the infection and it’s less accurate. That’s probably a big part of why we’ve seen the “reinfection” cases (which were probably false negatives and not actually reinfection).

At the same time, there are also other viruses out there that cause a cough and fever. Those haven’t all disappeared just because of COVID-19.

It’s a small store so it can get tricky trying to maintain 6’, but thankfully there were no morons in the store. Vince Gill is an immense talent and from what I gathered over the years a good guy. He was humbled to be asked to perform at Claptons Crossroads concert a while back. He is a picker and a true vocalist. And he’s got that just drips out way of singing that is just sugar and sweet and true. He was great when he was on tour.
Love his stuff.
Here’s a boatload of talent just chugging along…

Vince Gill - One More Last Chance (Crossroads Guitar 2010)

and back in the day when you would work 15 hour days in a non air conditioned truck, through towns you never want to see again, eat shit meals (in shit joints because you could fucking park there) bust your ass, sleep in a coffin and have to be too far the next day for sanity to be listened too……………Late at night by the dashboard lights, on some fucking two lane to Bumfuque, sometimes a self pitying tear would well up…

They could have removed this asshat from office. They also had access to the information from the Intelligence Community this was going to be a problem at the time.

The entire party is guilty.

They could do it by next week with the 25th amendment if they wanted to, but they don’t.

I know he’s a fabulous musician, and I’ve liked some of his music since before I even knew it was Vince Gill. But I still like buying albums, and I just haven’t been wild about his albums.

I did like this song enough when I first heard it to get the bar band I was in to cover it. I love the harmonies. I’ve heard that when Vince joined the band, he wouldn’t let anyone else sing in the studio. John Fogerty made the same demand. The results are stellar, but it’s still kind of a power move to take with your band.

Temporarily suspends home evictions

Expands childcare access
Takeout for mixed drinks with lids permitted

Possibly the most important:
Executive Order to Bolster Healthcare Workforce

The last order authorises credentialing retired or inactive health care workers, suspends mandatory continuing education courses, waives licensing fees, removes the restrictions on the numbers of physician’s assistants a physician can supervise, and authorises out-of-state licensed medical professionals to work in Nebraska without first obtaining a Nebraska license.

But Wikipedia then says:

By 2005, they were taken over by Navistar International, which had been selling them diesel engines.[2] Navistar then shuttered the plant in 2012 to cut costs after having suffered heavy losses.[1]

In March 2015, AMP Electric Vehicles took over Workhorse Custom Chassis, changing the company name to Workhorse Group Incorporated, and began offering a range of electrically powered delivery vans.

The Lordstown plant was going to come online at a later date.
These companies are all arms length from each other legally, even if wholly owned, subsidiary or member of.
When my manufacturing plant was bought it when from Ajax Products and Warehousing, to Ajax Products, to Not Ajax Products, to the name of the British holding company that bought it.Tomkins
And the Tomkins name was only on invoices and no building or property.
And then they were bought.

Naturally. For Trump, the rest of humanity simply does not exist. Even his gross lust for Ivanka is much more Trump’s attraction to the image he sees of himself in her, as opposed to any recognition of her as a separate person.

Goshen County, Wyo. borders Sioux, Scott’s Bluff, and Banner Counties in Nebraska’s Panhandle. Torrington is thirty-two miles from our largest city and about ten miles from the state line.

As coronavirus cases near Panhandle, health officials remind people of risks of traveling (includes map of counties affected outside the Panhandle)

Hell, from 1968 to 1970, DOCTOR WHO would use the old Guinness brewery in Acton as a filming location for The Invasion, Spearhead from Space, and The Ambassadors of Death. The plant was still in operation during the filming of The Invasion, but closed by the time of Spearhead and Ambassadors.

Acton, for the record, is not in Ireland. (Unlike Gallifrey.)

She Who Must Be Obeyed’s sister had a flat in Acton, just three blocks form the Brit Rail line and seven blocks from Queens Park Ranger’s home pitch. The most convenient tube stop was Shepard’s Bush, served by an express down Acton High Street.

Lovely little village in West London.

And how does that work around military bases in other states? Do they harass military personnel from New York every time the police see their cars?

Nebraska public health officials reported the first two deaths — one in Douglas County and one in Hall County — that were the result of COVID-19. Both had underlying health issues. As of early Friday evening, 85 people had tested positive in Nebraska.

Douglas is Omaha and suburbs, Hall is in central Nebraska.

The Villages, Florida’s huge Republican-rich retirement community, is experiencing community spread of coronavirus more than a week after Gov. Ron DeSantis was criticized for his slow and cautious response

Chasers:

The Villages last week became one of the first locations in the state to receive a 250-bed mobile hospital from the Florida Division of Emergency Services.

Gov. Ron DeSantis opened a mobile testing site in The Villages on Monday through a partnership with University of Florida Health. Testing capabilities there are faster than other sites around the state. A university official said during a Monday news conference that test results can be returned in about an hour.

Both the law and the cheque itself would have to be reworked to allow Trump to sign them, meaning they would be delayed by weeks or months.

Additionally, government cheques with his signature on them would be specifically so he can say how “he” helped out the American people. It is a campaign stunt disguised as a cheque.

Pecans are starting to leaf out. Their pollen gets me right up the ass. Big one in my front yard. I’m going to be a goo head for the next week. Big time snottage. The plan is to blow it out each morning and see if I have a sense of smell. If I do, our Social Distancing (ie: self quarantine) is probably OK, unless we have caught a whiff of the Plague in the last week.

We have been careful. But tomorrow I’ve got to make a grocery run, with gloves and a mask, for flour, yeast, cheese, beer, wine, meat, BACON, eggs, and, dog help me, Spam (It really is great fried for breakfast with eggs. Fight me.).

Calling it an early night, tonight. Sweet scaly dreams, dear friends, stay in and stay safe.

Reminder that in 1945, when we were expecting to invade the Japanese home islands, we stocked up on as many body bags and Purple Hearts as we expected to need. Then Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the battles never happened.

But body bags and medals have a shelf life of forever. 75 years later, we’ve still only used up half. The other half is still in warehouses, we’ll need them eventually.

Geeky math time in the age of corona:

The Fibonacci series is an exponential function. If you look at the the ratio of F(n)/F(n-1), this has an asymptote at approximately 1.618034 (which is the golden ratio). if you look at F(n)/F(n-2) it’s 2.618034, which means it more than doubles in two days.

If instead of starting with [1, 1] (we’re starting with one here to represent the first sick person) and add F(n-1) + F(n-2), we start with

[1,1,1] and add F(n-2) + F(n-3), we get a sequence that grows at about 2.325 every three iterations, leading to a value of 35,676,949 on the 64th iteration
[1,1,1,1] and add F(n-3) + F(n-4), we get a sequence, that grows at about 1.8189 every three iterations, leading to 206,897 on the 64th iteration.

Thus, even these very slow starting sequences are exponential in nature. These are also decent examples to show how even an every third day doubling can grow really large.
