I thought I might be right on the edge of a new thread, so I’m gonna math this one up:

Geeky math time in the age of corona:

The Fibonacci series is an exponential function. If you look at the the ratio of F(n)/F(n-1), this has an asymptote at approximately 1.618034 (which is the golden ratio). if you look at F(n)/F(n-2) it’s 2.618034, which means it more than doubles in two days.

If instead of starting with [1, 1] (we’re starting with one here to represent the first sick person) and add F(n-1) + F(n-2), we start with:

[1,1,1] and add F(n-2) + F(n-3), we get a sequence that grows at about 2.325 every three iterations, leading to a value of 35,676,949 on the 64th iteration.

[1,1,1,1] and add F(n-3) + F(n-4), we get a sequence, that grows at about 1.8189 every three iterations, leading to 206,897 on the 64th iteration.

Thus, even these very slow starting sequences are exponential in nature. These are also decent examples to show how even an every third day doubling can grow really large.

Nebraska population: about 1,900,000 people.

Number tested: 1,900.

The Omaha man was later identified by his son in a Facebook post as Ralph Marasco.

Marasco, a longtime Omaha real estate professional, died in his home Tuesday from what was originally thought to be heart disease but was actually the result of COVID-19, Marasco’s son Nico Marasco wrote.

Nico Marasco also warned those who had been in contact with his dad to self-quarantine for 14 days, per the advice of the Douglas County Health Department.

A funeral Mass with a celebration of Marasco’s life is planned for his birthday, July 11, 2020.

My wife’s brother is a high school science teacher in Texas. His school is closed, and teaching students is supposed to happen over the Internet.

He has no idea how he’s supposed to do that (he has a cell phone but no computer, and neither the state nor the school district will provide him with one).

GodDAMN but Arizona is fucking this up in more than one way.

First we have the Arizona Department of Health telling doctors and hospitals to basically not test anyone.

fox10phoenix.com

Then we have Banner Health, the largest hospital system in the state (in fact, the largest *employer* in the state) not providing adequate personal protective equipment.

phoenixnewtimes.com

So what we’ve got is we’re going to have overflowing hospitals, doctors and nurses getting sick while Gov. Doug Ducey continues to refuse to shut the state down.

And then there’s this—a gun humper asked our idiot congressman, Andy Biggs, to work on tax credits for owning and purchasing guns. I told the guy tartly: ” No. I don’t think your manhood substitutes should get any sort of tax credits.” He then posted this in response:

I pointed out to him that I’d been harassed by *professionals* (Scientology) and this was pretty weak. Then I posted it to my Facebook. :)

I went out today for a few things (mail, bank, milk, take-home lunch), dropped into the Target because I was passing it — and they had hand sanitizer! Two ounce bottles, one per customer, but it will last me a while. I only need it when I’m out, if then. So I’m happy.

Paper products were completely cleaned out of the store again. I thought we were getting over that. On the other hand, although soups were low, I found a bunch of cans of the soup I’ve been looking for and grabbed two.

(I plan to stick my head in in a few days to see if they have more hand sanitizer. Two two-ounce bottles isn’t hoarding, is it?)

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement following confirmation of the first two deaths in Nebraska due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Susanne and I send our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones today,” said Gov. Ricketts. “I encourage all Nebraskans to keep these families and all families impacted by coronavirus in their thoughts and prayers. This is a reminder for all of us to practice the ten-person rule, exercise good hygiene, and to stay home if you’re displaying flu-like symptoms.”

I’m curious how he’s been teaching the past decade. I know the teachers here have been required to maintain a school website to provide assignments, lecture materials, and answer emails. They do have to be cognizant of those who don’t have internet connections at home, but so much of the education even before this was online.

Time for some more “Dark Shadows.” We’re up to the arc where a parapsychologist holds a seance to try to understand why Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard is in a coma (in soap operas, “coma” is the trope for “contract negotiations with the actor”).

Meanwhile, Victoria Winters is starting to pull together the threads that show Laura Collins is actually a phoenix, and is about to kill David in a fiery rebirth.

Someone please tell me that we’re all just living in some dystopian satire, like the film Brazil:

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed into law a record $2 trillion stimulus bill to help those suffering from the coronavirus pandemic — part of which involves one-time cash payments being sent out to tens of millions of American households.

But according to The Wall Street Journal, Trump wants those checks to be sent out explicitly in his name.

“Mr. Trump has told people he wants his signature to appear on the direct payment checks that will go out to many Americans in the coming weeks, according to an administration official,” wrote Siobhan Hughes and Natalie Andrews. “Normally, a civil servant — the disbursing officer for the payment center — would sign federal checks, said Don Hammond, a former senior Treasury Department official.”

It’s that danged weakened polar vortex.

At any point where it should be keeping arctic air in the, y’know, Arctic, it can break down and let it drop as far south as north Florida.

And yes, that’s due to anthropogenic climate change as the marginally-warmer Arctic air is no longer so different from the air south of it to make the vortex circulate properly.

I just hope that the hurricane-with-snow we both lived through _last_ year is a one-time event; we don’t need more storms with eyewalls over the centre of the continent.

“Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his penis in one hand and his testicles gently in the other. She looks very closely and says, ‘There’s nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look just fine.’”

The big problem for Geraldo is that the stunted “rally ‘round the flag” effect is not doing anything for Trump on the election stage, certainly not in swing districts that he needs to hold to win an EC victory. And that it’s still early days, with the peak expected to be weeks or months out still.

People in battleground states will see Trump’s failure in full technicolor display - complete with the body count, the economic wreckage, and incompetent handling of the disaster from every aspect.

What has been done to date to contain the disease is in spite of Trump, not because of him. He’s led from behind at every step, and every effort at the GOP rewriting the history needs to be rebuffed.

it’s the weekend so im gonna spend it outside in the yard

growing some things
pruning / cutting / caring for some things

you’re not just sitting in your home waiting for the infection to knock on the door like the pesach plague

isolating, distancing, avoiding contact isn’t doing nothing.
it’s vital.
Critical to this thing working.
Something most(?) everyone can do with, truly, moderate or little inconvenience.

If your home life is feeling somewhat ‘normal’, then maybe it doesn’t feel like much of a contribution.

Been posting memes instead of comments because my comments would all basically be variations of Fuck Trump.

Even though I expected Trump to be an unmitigated disaster, he’s managed to exceed that expectation. Worse, I see too many fellow Americans still drinking the Kool-Aid and considering him a leader; it’s stunning.

While I’m at high risk due to age and health problems, I find myself more worried about family members. Disaster Don has put us all at risk for the sake of his ego, greed and narcissism. And his supporters and the Republican party do the same.

For the first time in my life, I find myself hating with the heat of a thousand supernovas. And it’s taking a toll. Oh, and …

Personally, I’m crying more than I ever have. Trying to keep it private so I don’t worry my kid and husband, but it’s hard. The pollen count here is almost SEVEN THOUSAND this morning which makes it hard for me to work outside without getting really nasty allergy symptoms, which means gardening isn’t happening and I’m behind. I hate being cooped up. Being scared isn’t helping. Once I feel better I think I’m going to start cleaning up the basement to create a craft and sewing space. Something. Anything. Other than missing my girlfriend, I am holding up okay. She works for the German Federal Reserve, which means she has to go into the office (via public transportation) two or three days a week (they have alternating teams that work from home, but at least two people have to be in the office at all times to effect inter-bank transfers).

So I need to keep safe at home and go for walks in the vineyards. I do run into people there and have conversations at safe distances, but I realize that I get bored watching videos on my own: I will watch most anything with someone to watch it with, but on my own, I just find myself watching reruns of Star Trek series…

The article is paywalled, but we’re making hard choices every day, walking the path between stopping the epidemic cold by all sheltering in place (in which sick people die at home — no hospital care — and we all starve), and acting as if everything were normal (in which hospitals are overwhelmed and millions die). Does that article really say something other than that? From the little bit I could see, it doesn’t liik like it.

My thoughts (originally posted on LGM):

Huntsville AL has the highest concentration of PHDs in America, courtesy of the US Government placing NASA, USACE, and a technology base there through policy decisions more than anything inherent in Alabama itself

Now all those smart and trained (elsewhere) people and the investments made by them and in them are at risk because the actions of the Alabama Governor

Not much pork, but it really flavors the tofu wonderfully if it is done right.

Guilty secret - I’ve always loved veggie burgers. Not the Boca stuff, or now the “Impossible” stuff (wow that’s some ego in the name) that is designed to mimic the meat experience, but old-fashioned vegetables-crammed-into-patty-shape stuff that doesn’t look or feel like meat at all.

Melt a slice of cheese on them, throw in your standard burger toppings, squirt in a little hot sauce (I’m not a Tabasco man, but it actually works well with these), maybe another condiment on a fresh bun… just so good.

re: #160 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)

It’s so stupid and this coming from a self described meat and potatoes guy. At my core I eat like a 19th century peasant who likes so called ethnic food.

I never liked meat as a kid, which drove my poor parents to distraction. Only thing I liked were bacon sandwiches (where you could hide it in the bread) and burgers from a joint called the Lure, because the patties were likewise so thin you didn’t notice them under the ketchup and pickles.

I eventually learned to eat meat and even like it, but then as a student, I became an economic vegetarian, I just could not afford to eat meat more than once or twice a week.

Then I moved to Germany where I was gobsmacked to find pork often as cheap as many fresh vegetables - and ubiquitous…but they are starting to catch on to vegetarian options here as well.

Tried the impossible whopper a month ago, and didn’t understand the point.

Go read my comments above on the topic.

Fish country is fairly well blowing up because the county issued an executive order telling stores that sell both essentials and non-essentials to cordon off their non-essentials because “other businesses are complaining because they are closed, but you are open.” Yeah, that’s their actual justification - unfair competition. As if people won’t go back to those stores once they reopen!

AAAARRRRGG! Just tried to register for unemployment with the State of Nevada (Since I work in State, it’s allowed even though I live in Idaho). Got all the way to the page that asks for my employer. Clicked on them and it came back and said I wasn’t on the company rolls. Now I have to wait until Monday and call to get this fixed. I suspect the reason they couldn’t find me is they are using an outdated roster that has my dead name on it instead of my new legal name.

Kansas governor orders residents to stay home to curb virus

Kelly, a Democrat, issued the order for Kansas’ 2.9 million residents after at least 25 counties, including all of the state’s most populous ones, issued their own stay-at-home orders. Kelly said the new order supersedes the local orders.

[…]

Conservatives in the Republican-controlled Legislature said that Kelly overreached this month when she ordered all of the state’s K-12 schools closed for the rest of the semester and complained that the state’s economy was being damaged too much. Legislative leaders have the power to review — and revoke — her orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kansas House Speaker Ron Ryckman, Majority Leader Dan Hawkins and Speaker Pro Tem Blaine Finch, all Republicans, said in a joint statement that the new order “will no doubt impact our families and our businesses. As members of the Legislative Coordinating Council we have a duty to carefully assess this executive order and the reasons for it. Over the coming days we will consult with the Attorney General, health care professionals, the business community, and the state’s emergency management team to make sure we are on the right path.”

“Pro-life” Republicans, again caring most about money.

I tend to use worldometers.info for my obsessive data needs, and lately they’ve been adding links to their state-level sources. From screenshots pasted here I know a couple of others are too.

Indiana (after some early missteps) dumps their numbers at 11 AM local. New York seems to be pushing multiple tranches through the day. Weekends things always slow down a little, and I think if we go back and look at the graphs we’re going to see underreporting on weekends followed by catching up on Mondays.

Over the coming days we will consult with the Attorney General, health care professionals, the business community, and the state’s emergency management team to make sure we are on the right path

Attorney General - She can do it
Health Care Professionals - Yes, and more, to save lives.
Business Community - Nope, we’re losing money
Emergency Management Team - Yes, to keep things from getting worse.

GOP - There you have it, the Governor overstepped her bounds and is going to kill people by keeping things closed.

Btw I was enrolled at school living in the dorms in 1983.

I was in school with Tony Francona and Steve Kerr. I never saw Kerr (big campus) but was inspired by his response to the tragic death of his parents. But I had 0800 classes and walking to them I would pass the baseball field and see Terry Francona our there every morning. And at 1600 when I would walk home to homework sessions, he was still out there.

No surprise either became successful coaches

re: #173 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

That reminds me of my teens in Texas, when certain aisles in the grocery stores were roped off on Sundays to keep you from buying stuff forbidden under the blue laws. The blue laws got blown all to hell in the mid-80s when national corporations (like Target) refused to close on Sundays in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

See, I can understand doing that in a case like that, or if the county demonstrated actual risk of infection due to people congregating to buy non-essential items, or enacting more sensible restrictions like limiting the number of people who can enter a store at a time. This is just a ham-fisted way for the local plutocrat to enforce his businesses’ domination.

Most stores closed on Sundays when I was a kid because of those Blue laws. Then KMart built a second store on the south side of town and closed it on Saturdays instead, since the laws said you could only be open six days a week.

Trump will cast this to his marks in the usual way, to give the impression that NY is the bad actor:

US President Donald Trump has said he is considering imposing a quarantine on New York in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

What is he going to do when Florida is overwhelmed, which is probably less than seven days away?

And Louisiana, which will rapidly reach the point of not being able to handle their cases?

BTW, two things that will never change in Germany are the shopping laws (no shopping on Sundays and legal holidays*) and speed limit restrictions on the Autobahn**

*those laws are shot through with exemptions for tourist areas, special events, “travel requisites” (which include booze, snacks and titty magazines), perishable items such as flowers and seasonal vegetables. And bakeries can be open up to three hours on a Sunday.

**70 % of Autobahn kilometers have no posted limit. There is a recommended speed limit of 130 kph. Which means that if you have an accident while driving in excess of that, you can be held at least partially liable for legal (and insurance) purposes.

Trump continues to get his information and plans from conservative “TV” experts who preach that that cure is worse than the disease. They all fit Oscar Wilde’s description of those who “know the price of everything and the value of nothing”. They promote a toxic ignorance that will continue to get people killed.

And Trump’s true medical experts seem to have a very limited ability to control his actions or his statements — they have certainly discovered as Mattis did, that Trump cannot process or retain any information that contradicts his personal views — that reality must conform to his perspective, rather than the reverse. Even in the midst of a war against an implacable foe who is deaf to his bluster, Trump follows Rove’s dictum: “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality”

Right now the numbers say about 1 in 3000 Americans has tested positive for C19, and 1 in 150000 has died of it. Which feels about right - not all of us actively know someone who has it, but almost certainly someone we’ve met in our lifetime does. And the odds that we know someone who has passed because of it are lowish, but there are enough that the stories are starting to show up more frequently.

At current doubling rates, that’s probably going to be worse than 1 in 800 by this time next week. The damned idiots running the country have allowed this to spin out of control, and even places where there are shelter-in-place orders are doing it badly.

CORONAVRIUS HALTS PRODUCTION… Only 2nd Time Ever

See’s Candies — perhaps the most iconic chocolatier in America — is facing a bittersweet ending (for now) … halting production because of coronavirus, which makes it a historical pause.

See’s made the announcement this weekend, saying it was temporarily closing up shop and suspending production of its famous chocolate sweets across the country. Cases is lagging far more than that because there still isn’t nearly the test quantity needed. It’s very hard to tell how much - it’s probably not 10x higher than the confirmed number, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t at least 2x.

I had not previously considered that the death numbers are lagging in that particular sense, though there has been an increasing amount of reporting that deaths are being undercounted.

It’s quite likely that deaths among people with pre-existing conditions who have not been tested have their deaths attributed to that underlying condition rather than coronavirus. Imagine covid19 to be a serial killer on the loose.

It’s a disease that strikes without warning, but leaves fingerprints only if you search for them.

Right now, NYC has a serial killer on the loose and insufficient testing, which means it’s now killed more than those killed by homicide for any year in the past decade. Within days, it’ll exceed the homicides from any year since 2000.

It wont be long before it exceeds the death toll from 9/11 in NYC alone.

That’s what exponential growth is about, and the insufficient testing is continuing to hamper fighting this.

So while Trump talks about quarantining NYC metro area, he’s ignoring that every fucking case anywhere in the US can cause an outbreak like seen in NYC with just time.

That’s how the serial killer known as covid19 functions. It spreads and kills as a function of time and incompetence.
