Worked last night, slept a couple of hours and now wide awake again. Did my groceries for however long. Some chicken, canadian bacon, taters, clam strip, corn dogs, beer and a liter of insanely cheap rum ($8.99/liter) so I’ll probably have to grog it rather than my preference for neat sipping. Still have a couple of dollars in the bank to get bread and eggs later. That’s not doing too bad.

The store itself was busier than I’d have prefered but people were trying to stay apart. Only big empty shelves were TP & eggs.

Now a baloney sammich, some chips and back to bed since I have the over night shift again tonight.

So I listened to Rush back in the summer of… 98? Maybe it was 99. It was the only radio station I could get in the afternoon in that building.

I disagreed with him then, but he could run a show and he wasn’t utterly evil. But he was happy to demonize opponents and ascribe ugly motives whenever possible.

I dunno, maybe it was 9-11, maybe it was just a slow slide through the first five years of the new century, but somewhere along the way he’s bought fully into the doctrine that yelling what you want loud enough will make it true. I genuinely don’t understand anymore if the people acting in this mode really believe the things they’re saying or if it’s all calculated.

A random funny tweet I ran into…somehow

30
calochortus  Mar 28, 2020 • 11:44:58am

Last night I woke up around 5 a.m. and listened to public radio for half an hour or so. Someone was saying that based on somewhat limited information, after the 1918-19 flu epidemic the cities that had been more shut down during the epidemic rebounded faster economically than did the ones who kept up more economic activity during that time.

The reason I mention that this was me listening at 5 a.m. is that I can’t possibly provide you with any sort of source for this info. as I was lulling myself back to sleep with the “white noise” of talking.

Could be. Interestingly, the places that really clamped down and had infection rates fall quickly were more likely to have a second wave because not enough people were immune. I don’t know what the respective death rates were though.

Currently, Louisiana has about twice as many deaths as here in California. Yes, it has to do with Mardi Gras. But that was in February, and Covid-19 was on the radar in the disease community but Trump ignored it… and it appears Louisiana wasn’t paying attention either.

New Orleans hospitals will be overwhelmed before many other places. Florida will be overwhelmed before many other states. And it’s not NY’s fault.

It won’t be until we have a vaccine that we will be protected. However, if we flatten the curve for now, it gives us the opportunity to produce enough equipment for the second wave that hits. Assuming, we do the right thing and continue to manufacture for handling the worst case scenario.

I’m hoping we can shop in a few weeks and take a little trip this summer. That’s if things quiet down with the warmer weather. I’d be pretty willing to lock myself up again for a while in the Fall, especially if we can then get vaccines to medical and emergency people.

Yeah, Xanadu was a trainwreck. I suppose it does have some camp value, as a window into a now (best) forgotten era. Seriously, you gotta wonder who thought it’d be a great idea to make a musical about a roller disco. In 1980. Disco was pretty much dead at that point….it peaked around the time of Saturday Night Fever and went into a terminal decline not long after that film was released in ‘77.

I suspect a helluva lot of cocaine was involved in the pitch meeting for Xanadu.

75
Mattand  Mar 28, 2020 • 12:22:41pm

Pulling it back to music for a second:

Finally got around to watching the John Fogerty clip from a few posts back. Amazing that he still has it.

Charles pointed out that Fogerty is still performing the songs in their original keys. I learned to play Bad Moon Rising in D (D-G-A) going off the record. In the video, it looks like he’s playing in E (E-A-B).

I have tablature for Fortunate Son, and it says to tune the whole guitar down one step to D, resulting in different chord shapes. I was wondering if that is something Fogerty has done his whole career and did that somehow make singing easier on his vocal chords.

Now that I’m typing it out, maybe not, since you have to hit those notes anyway. Charles or any other musicians have insight on that?

a second wave this fall.

i’m not particularly concerned with another societal wave -other than as a member of the community / planet

i’m worried about a population of two people who are not me
this is the new normal

once ‘under control’ it’s not gonna disappear
uninfected vulnerable people will still be just as vulnerable
how can i ever let my guard down if my wife is immuno and my mom is 91?

to stay healthy and safe, the precautions we’re taking can’t go away:
- infrequent / limited shopping
- constant hand washing
- social distancing
- disinfecting everything that comes into your house
- not traveling

some maybe could be relaxed a bit. (some aspects of distancing, some travel)

but until there is a true and effective vaccine, for anyone who hasn’t had it, absolutely nothing has changed:

- anyone can contract it, anywhere, anytime
- anyone can survive it
- anyone can die from it

Yeah, hooray for esports - without which there’d be no sports at all.

CSGO has more or less continued with their various league play as normal.
League of Legends dropped a week in most countries to retool for remote play, and are mostly back to normal.
Good to hear about Overwatch, though I get motion-sick and don’t like the point-capture modes at all. Activision’s other esport league - Call of Duty - hasn’t quite put a schedule back together though it ought to be possible.
DOTA events are running, of course, and I saw some Rocket League the other night.

If you’re new to esports and want something competitive to watch today, I’d suggest:
LoL NALCS in a couple of hours at twitch.tv
League is similar to DOTA - fantasy battle games that mix complex strategy and expert clicking. They’ve put together a cohesively professional presentation that is a lot of fun to watch.
CounterStrike is the grand old man of competitive esport. First-person shooting mixed with situational tactics in a well-established and managed game. You can always get some at twitch.tv and there are other worthwhile leagues.
There’s a lot of races of well-established games in the SpeedGaming channels. A good place to start today might be a Zelda LttP rando race at twitch.tv
And then there’s the truly crazy stuff that bubbles up from the amateur scene - one of my favorites is twitch.tv where the Kusogrande tournament is getting into full swing.

Those are all Twitch links. Twitch gets a bad rep, but mostly it’s just the chat in the larger channels that is toxic. If you don’t like the chat, just hide it.

The economy is not just going to re-boot when Trump declares it over: people are going to stay away in large numbers from crowded public events, movie theaters, festivals, cruises, etc., even if they are allowed.

And when waves of COVID hit various companies, their operations will be impaired or disrupted, which will not allow for the ruthlessly optima efficiency that our modern economy demands.

He could have tuned down in order to be able to play ‘cowboy chords’ and still be in the right key for the song. He’d still be singing it in the original key, though.

Tuning down makes the guitar sound deeper as well.

I don’t think that matters for singing, but it does make the string tension lighter so it would be slightly easier to play, I guess.

I play in the key I can best sing the song. I play a couple of Grateful Dead songs two steps down from what others play because I could never sound quite right singing in the native key.

And when waves of COVID hit various companies, their operations will be impaired or disrupted, which will not allow for the ruthlessly optima efficiency that our modern economy demands.

You’re not wrong. It’s very very dense. They could do a little more, but there’s just not enough time to really explain everything. I do think that it’s less inscrutable than DOTA - the fights are about the same, but the map and strategic environment is much more self-explanatory.

The great thing about esports in general, though, is how approachable they are - if you’ve got a computer, you can download the game and learn a little about it. Compared to the major team sports, the costs and necessary supporting infrastructure is tiny on a per-player basis.

Skatetown, USA also starred Maureen McCormick of Brady Bunch fame. She later recalled that pretty much damn near everyone was indulging in Bolivian Marching Powder on the set, including herself - she fell into a pretty serious cocaine addiction during production.

Scott Baio recalled many years later,

I have blocked that movie from my memory, it was so bad… That was that whole time where Xanadu and Roller Boogie and all that crap was coming out. That was one of those things where they sent me the script and I said ‘no,’ but they just kept calling and offering more money! I mean, they offered me a lot of money. And finally I said, ‘Well, hell. What is it? Two weeks’ work? Whatever. Okay. Fine.’ And it was… You know, sometimes money isn’t everything. [Laughs.] It was just bad. I mean, it was bad shooting it. I’m trying to think of any real stories that I have, but it was just insanity. When was that? ‘79? It was just a guy making a film who didn’t know how to make a film. And I don’t even know what the story was! Skatetown, U.S.A.? That was crapola.

I know, Baio’s a nut - but that quip of his got a chuckle out of me.

LOL it makes it all the more trainwreck-y.

The film itself is a disaster. Patrick Swayze did get positive reviews, and he did his own skating in the film as well - he’d rollerskated professionally as a teenager and was a trained dancer, so his performance stood out. Everyone else (including Baio)….not so much. And Dorothy Stratten had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as a girl ordering a pizza.

It’d definitely a time-capusle of 1970s weirdness, particularly the short-lived rollerdisco craze.

re: #74 Dr Lizardo

Yeah, Xanadu was a trainwreck. I suppose it does have some camp value, as a window into a now (best) forgotten era. Seriously, you gotta wonder who thought it’d be a great idea to make a musical about a roller disco. In 1980. Disco was pretty much dead at that point….it peaked around the time of Saturday Night Fever and went into a terminal decline not long after that film was released in ‘77.

I suspect a helluva lot of cocaine was involved in the pitch meeting for Xanadu.

To be fair, it was a late highlight for ELO, and flippin’ Olivia Newton John:

re: #122 Colère Tueur de Lapin

Nope, no tomatoes. Or chilies.

You can still see holdover recipes from the era in some cuisines, where they’re blending multiple ingredients to get a mix of sweet, sour, and umami that matches what tomatoes do on their own. With the Romans, a lot of times the launch point for that was wine syrup and fish sauce. In other places like the Caucasian regions (where a lot of stone fruit originates) you see stuff like using partially-ripened fruit…in particular plums…for sauces. But then there’s also stuff like pre-tomato “ketchup” made from mushrooms.

The explosion of the tomato makes a lot of sense when you look at what people were trying to achieve in terms of flavor with mixed ingredients.

While I was in Istanbul I went to an Ottoman cuisine restaraunt and they had this elaborate soup that was a puree of fruits, melon seeds, nuts, and various seasonings. What came to the table was…almost identical to tomato soup. It was funny as hell.

That was one hell of a wild time in Hollywood, from what I’ve read. The late 1970s/early ’80s was the sunset of the auteur film-makers; Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate killed that off. And then with the rise of film-makers like Spielberg and Lucas, making films that were consistently ultra-high-grossing flicks, Hollywood realized that little films weren’t gonna cut the mustard and they moved to the high-profile summer release tent-pole films we’re so familiar with today.

The other big chance of the early 80s was the establishment of the PG-13 rating, which Hollywood initially chafed under because they’d been playing fast and loose with the indistinct line between PG and R since the establishment of ratings. Then they realized just how nebulous the line between PG-13 and R is and have been dancing on it ever since. Hence why none of the big R-rated films of the 80s could ever get made today, and why their “remakes/reboots” today seem so damned tame by comparison.

Evangelicals have invented their own Cosmic Domestic Abuser, who hits humanity because we deserve it, by chopping and cutting all available texts that have cultural legitimacy, then adding reams of their own fanfiction.

Neil Young has been doing that since at least Massey Hall in 72. Needle and the Damage Done is a whole tone down from the album. Yeah, when you don’t have a recording studio worth of reverb to play with, you sing stuff down. Notice on Song Remains the Same, the version of Rock and Roll Robert Plant sings is much more voice-friendly.

I thought so. All those fines that Alex Jones has piled up before even going to trial: Juanita Jean’s son Mark Bankston (Little Bubba) is the attorney cleaning his clock.

“It is rare to see a legal defense so incompetent and disrespectful to the rule of law that it causes a defendant to rack up $150,000 in fines during preliminary motions before even reaching trial,” Bankston said. “These fines are only the beginning. A far greater reckoning awaits Mr. Jones.”

I mean, I’m not a fan of god concepts in general, but American Evangelicals are absolutely going for the gusto on formulating an entirely venal, hollow-of-values sock puppet god.

It’s the theological equivalent of “solve the problem by redefining it”…any god that demands consistency or effort is a burden to them, so they invent a god that cares only about perfunctory performance of faith. Thus they can err and always be forgiven, whereas anyone who won’t perform the precise ritual is Always Bad and Always Wrong.

And we’ve watched over the last three decades as they’ve finer-tuned their divinity, so that all their materialism is actually sacred.

re: #157 Targetpractice

The other big chance of the early 80s was the establishment of the PG-13 rating, which Hollywood initially chafed under because they’d been playing fast and loose with the indistinct line between PG and R since the establishment of ratings. Then they realized just how nebulous the line between PG-13 and R is and have been dancing on it ever since. Hence why none of the big R-rated films of the 80s could ever get made today, and why their “remakes/reboots” today seem so damned tame by comparison.

Look at the recent reboot of RoboCop, the 2014 version. It’s OK….but it doesn’t hold a candle to the 1987 original, which was one of the most visceral films I’d ever seen at that time. Of course, it helped that the original RoboCop had some truly amazing actors all the way up and down the line, from the main cast to supporting actors, and that Paul Verhoeven expertly walked that very fine line between action/sci-fi/bodyhorror and a ruthlessly satirical indictment of corporate America.

Yeah…..hard to imagine something like that today. The 2014 remake was all right - and it was also entirely unnecessary.

Steam is probably raking the dough in without having to conduct a sale. They could get some nice pr by offering a free selection of games free for the duration.

Drawful 2 is currently free; I picked up a copy earlier this week. It’s a fantastic social game (3-8 people) where you are given a thing to draw (I once got “fog” or “designer women’s jeans”) on your phone - no erasing! - and then each picture is shown and people type in their guess as to what the thing was. Then all the guesses are displayed and you vote for which one you think was the right answer. If people guess the right thing, the person who drew it gets the points. Otherwise, the person who came up with the fake thing gets the point.

It’s a great game that can be played online or in person, and all sorts of groups. I’ve done the first version with friends and family. Set up a Discord with screenshare to run the main game, everyone uses their own smartphone as the controller (you go to a website and enter the code shown on screen, no app requires) and have voice chat - great way to socialize from a distance.

IMO, the only thing the remake has going for it is the 20+ years in advances made in practical effects and CGI. The biting satire has been replaced with a “corrupt cops on the corporate take” script, the actors seem to be there just for a paycheck, and (again) the need to keep it to a PG-13 rating means the over-the-top violence of the original is patched over with various attempts at humor. I’d also say that the attempt really suffers from one big problem: Various films (including two sequels to the original) have followed the same formula so much that what once was original and groundbreaking today is just another cookie-cutter film.

Key finding: “Trump is wildly out of step with Americans with his new push to relax social distancing. Simpler explanation: He’s been planning to blame his failures on blue states for weeks. First he accused them of being the cause of the “hoax” that was threatening his reelection, then he attacked them for shutting things down when the market got jittery, and in recent days he’s accused them of lying about the need for equipment to explain why his own half-assed efforts have led to a massive deficit of necessary tools to fight the virus.

So the obvious next step is to accuse those states of being responsible for the spread of the virus, because (unsurprisingly) red state govs are kissing his ass while going along with his insistence that closing things down was “worse” than acting as things were fine.

Of all the Terminator films, my personal favorite is the 1984 original. T2 had groundbreaking VFX, no doubt about it and it deserves a great deal of recognition for that….but The Terminator stands out for its gritty, low-budget, almost guerrilla-style of film-making.

It actually was guerilla-style film-making. Cameron’s crew were running on such a shoe-string budget that the reason the film was mostly filmed during the night was because they couldn’t afford the permits for filming during daylight hours. So most filming was basically “Ready. Action. Cut. Now…RUN BEFORE THE COPS GET HERE!” The one time they actually got caught by the cops, Cameron got them off in a totally awesome fashion: He told a massive lie. He said they were film-school students and weren’t aware they needed permits to film on-location. The cops bought it and let them off with a warning, which just goes to show how much of a practiced liar James Cameron is.

Only 17 new cases today, but 5 new deaths (including the first 30-or-younger case). Deaths are a lagging indicator, of course, even more so than the cases. It’s very much looking possible that we are starting to see the curve flatten here - if tomorrow AND Monday are both low increases then I would say it’s real and not just noise.

(Men currently make up 53% of the cases but 76% of the deaths in county.)

You and millions others are the “good soldier”.
Pay your own way, save your sick and personal days, and stress when you miss work.
My wife knows she HAS to work for us to work out. She’s 66. I told that story 2 weeks ago about her going in with a sick SUPERVISOR in there.
Now she’s at 2 on 2 off but maybe they go all home.
You can also tell them you feel under the weather.
But I know right where you are.
Sometimes you have to jump up and down and make a scene if quiet sensibility doesn’t get it.
Point to the rising cases. The uncertainty. And the fact you don’t feel good.
Good luck.

Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services updates their “dashboard” at 1200 and 1800 Central Time.

As of now, there are no new cases or deaths since yesterday.

Total tested (in a state of 1,900,000): 2,006 (there’s no fookin’ way Trump could identify which counties are safe with testing levels that low).
Positive: 96
Deaths: 2

Almost all the cases are in Omaha or its suburbs.

Updated self-quarantine guidelines are being provided to anyone that has traveled or will be traveling outside the Nebraska Panhandle.

To limit spread in Nebraska, all travelers should self-quarantine for 14 days upon returning home and immediately report any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection to their health care provider. This means if you travel out of the Panhandle, you will be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days upon returning to the Panhandle with these exceptions: (exceptions are extremely limited, such as truckers or workers who must leave the area for work, they are required to stay home when they return).

Another Beverly Hills landmark closes for good.

Goodbye Nate N’ Al’s!

Iconic Beverly Hills restaurant Nate ‘N Al’s is closing tomorrow, a source has confirmed to Eater. The historic Jewish deli has had a rollercoaster two years, having first been slated for closure back in 2018 before being saved by Irving Azoff and a slew of LA celebrities. The restaurant was set to move to a new location in Beverly Hills after its building was sold, but now that deal has reportedly fallen through. At this point, it’s unclear if Nate ‘N Al’s will ever return, and if so in what form. The final day of service — albeit takeout and delivery only per California Governor Gavin Newsom, given the current novel coronavirus pandemic — is tomorrow.

Nate ‘N Al’s has long been one of the most famous restaurants in all of Los Angeles, playing to daytime power meetings between music, television, and movie industry titans. The restaurant first opened in 1945, and was purchased by the Azoff-led consortium in 2019, around the same time the Azoffs also bought separate restaurant legend Apple Pan. It was thought that Nate ‘N Al’s would relocate over to Canon Drive in the old Wolfgang Steakhouse space, but the insider says that is no longer the case.

So first, the Senate Repubs just decided that they were gonna throw $500 billion into Mnuchin’s pocket without the least bit of oversight, setting up Donny to declare at a presser that he would be the oversight.

Then they tried to sneak through a final draft without the language negotiated with the Senate Dems, only to get caught and time wasted waiting for a final draft that included the language so it could be voted upon.

And now Donny has just decided to continue with the campaign of total obstruction in order to allow Stevie to spend $500 billion however he likes on whichever companies/donors he likes.

So how long before we find out that Trump hotels/golf courses have received bailouts in total contravention of the law, with the belief that he’s bullet-proof because there’s no way Mitch would ever allow him to be held accountable for blatantly breaking the law?

They, like Wyoming, report many more women than men infected. Cases are in all age ranges, with the most in the 40-49 age group (about 2/3 women).

The only age range where there are more men than women is 70-79.

Now that’s anomalous (the infection rate doesn’t skew male as far as the death rate does, but it is more male than female other places). I wonder if it reflects who is choosing to get tested in that very red county?
