Ben Folds Five at Their Best: “Philosophy” (From Sessions at West 54th) [VIDEO]

There is no best rock and roll band in the world. It doesn’t exist in a persistent fashion. But any given band can be the best rock and roll band in the world on any given night if all the variables line up just right, and this was Ben Folds Five’s night.

Music video by Ben Folds Five performing Philosophy (from Sessions at West 54th). (C) 2001 Epic Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment

Won’t you look up at the skyline
At the mortar, block, and glass
And check out the reflections in my eyes

See they always used to be there
Even when this was all was grass
And I sang and danced about a high-rise

And you were laughing at my helmet hat
Laughing at my torch

Go ahead you laugh all you want
I got my philosophy
(It keeps my feet on the ground)
And I trust it like the ground
That’s why my philosophy
Keeps me walking when I’m falling down

I see that there is evil
And I know that there is good
And the in-betweens I never understood

Would you look at me I’m crazy
But I get the job done
I’m crazy but I get the job done

So go ahead and laugh all you want
I got my philosophy
(It keeps my feet on the ground)
And I trust it like the ground
That’s why my philosophy
Keeps me walking when I’m falling down

I pushed you cause I loved you guys
I didn’t realize
That you weren’t having fun
And I dragged you up the stairs
And I told you to fly
You were flapping your arms
Then you started to cry, you were too high

Now you take this all for granted
You take the mortar, block, and glass
And you forget the speech that moved the stone

But it’s really not that you can’t see
The forest from the trees
You just never been out in the woods alone
So you can laugh all you want to

But I’ve got my philosophy
(It keeps my feet on the ground)
And I love you you’re my friend
But you got no philosophy
Now it’s time for this song to end

It pains me to agree with this, because there is no fundamental reason why religious people should be in opposition to science. I still believe the two can live harmoniously, if the religious part is approached temperately and with a realistic understanding of what the teachings actually mean. But the fundamentalists are doing their damnedest to make sure that doesn’t happen.

They send them to me as well. That started when I was elected to my village board.

I think it had something to do with trying to influence shipping decisions by local government in my case. (We always use the Post Office, not commercial shippers who won’t deliver here without threat of a lawsuit.)

They still send me catalogues now. To my house.

I feel like, that if they federal response wasn’t a shit dumpster, nuclear waste ridden coal fire, then these donations would be welcomed by all quarters. The fact that they are using a % diff in wealth in the new gilded age to shame one of the few billionaires that seems to try to live noblesse oblige may or may not help.

Wealth tax would be more effective. Take the money from the Koch’s and Adelson’s of the world. If they don’t like it they can invest it in future businesses that actually solve our problems instead of fake wines and gaud.

Because a day can’t go by without the Trump Administration sycophants not acting like shitheads:

Trump admin revokes reservation of Native American tribe that welcomed the Pilgrims

The Mashpee Wampanoag have had to fight a decades-long battle to reclaim their ancestral lands and win recognition from the federal government since their first filing in 1976 — and now they’ve had them snatched away again by the Trump administration.

“Today’s action was cruel and it was unnecessary. The Secretary is under no court order to take our land out of trust. He is fully aware that litigation to uphold our status as a tribe eligible for the benefits of the Indian Reorganization Act is ongoing…It begs the question, what is driving our federal trustee’s crusade against our reservation?” wrote Chairman Cedric Cromwell in a statement.

[…]

The House of Representatives has passed a bill, H.R. 312, affirming the tribe’s reservation as trust land, that now lies in the purgatory of Senate Majority Mitch McConnell’s “legislative graveyard.”

Yep. As I said downstairs:

May the good lord give us mercy and give trump justice.

I just heard that a member of my parish, Gus, a Korea vet who had many hard memories, has passed. I do not know that it was virus, but I do not know that it wasn’t. In my heart I will hold trump accountable though. I just pray that he did not die alone for I know his relationship with his son was strained.

I wonder how many Americans realize that we are still at the front end of the first wave?

All this social distancing and lockdown strategy can do is buy time. And what that means is that there will be another peak once the lockdowns end.

2020 will go down as a most horrible year.

And I am growing in suspicion that Trump will try to do something with the election this fall. I want to believe that enough governors, even those in “red” states, are too proud to let DC dictate the terms of their elections.

My cousin in Michigan was complaining that people from Detroit will be seeking out hospitals in central and western Michigan when they are overwhelmed in Detroit.

I pointed out that will happen everywhere, and if the situation was reversed (the most cases were in Grand Rapids or Traverse City) then people would be headed to Detroit.

The DailyFail is redeeming itself with all this pandemic coverage:

Mount Sinai execs are safely tucked away in their FLORIDA vacation homes as medical staff don garbage bags to protect themselves from the coronavirus, which has already killed a nurse at the New York hospital

Dr Kenneth Davis, the 72-year-old CEO of the Mount Sinai Health System, has been staying at his six-bedroom mansion near Palm Beach for weeks

Dr Arthur Klein, also 72-years-old and president of the Mount Sinai Health Network, has been lodging at his condo in Palm Beach since earlier in the month

The duo appear to be away from the intense battle taking place in the city, which has depleted resources and even killed a medical staff at a Manhattan facility

[…]

On Friday, Dr Davis claimed that his own doctor instructed him to stay in Florida as he is above the age of 70. He added that he had already been in the state as he had been fundraising ‘before this started.’

[…]

‘Do you know that from the time I wake up from the time I go to bed I am totally engaged?’ he huffed. ‘Do you know that I get over 400 emails that I reply to. That on a good day it’s every 90 seconds and that on a bad day it’s almost every minute. That I have teleconferencing with Zoom like constantly. When they don’t have a Zoom, I’m on the phone with them. I mean, please.’

Davis suggested that doctors provided similar directives to Klein.

He also explained that he and Klein had been in contact with China to get 5.5 tons of gear to the hospital system.

Oh, the burden of email. And why do these elites (like Trump) always treat China as a single monolith? You just don’t call up “China”, you call a person, a company, or a government office.

And how telling is it that the Federal government hasn’t already been procuring these supplies?

55
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 28, 2020 • 7:38:03pm

On that doctor’s order to stay in Florida - it’s as if they are pretending that, thanks to DeSantis, they don’t realize that Florida is the likely next hotspot in the US.

What amazes me is there are any human beings left in this country that think Trump knows what he’s doing about this pandemic.

I actually sort of get “liking” him. He sounds like a lot of loudmouths I’ve met who appeal to certain folks. I definitely get “following him.” Hey, I remember Jim Jones. I watched Triumph of the Will. I get thinking Trump hates the people you hate and he’s your weapon against them. And I get thinking that, yeah, he’s a scam artist, but you’re in on the scam and he’d never scam you. That’s what all great scam artists make people think.

But I *do not* get thinking he knows what he’s doing in the situation he finds himself. That is utterly beyond my comprehension

So apparently the king of Thailand is still vacationing in Bavaria, when all other hotels have been closed.

At a time when Thailand is also suffering the pandemic, and it’s getting worse there.

It is reported that the king took to Bavaria with him his four wives and his harem (supposedly twenty strong.)

Who takes their wives and their harem on vacation? Seriously, one group would be more than enough, I presume.

Quit watching the news all of the time. It has been really hard for me, i almost constantly listened to the news. Now, I watch the network nightly news and only on local news cast and try to limit myself to online news. If there is real news or a breakthrough it will make itself known.

I have been having problems with panic attacks and stress. I have employees and their families counting on me to make the right call, I don’t have the luxury right now of getting in the weeds.

I hate having to rely on our current government. We will get through this if we use our heads, follow science based and common sense orders, stay more aware than the people we are dealing with and constantly wash our hands.

These are scary times that none of us have dealt with before. If you aren’t scared or are making light of these times then I have no use of you.

Long story short, your wife is right to be scared and is a good person for being so. Give her my best, we will get through this.

South Korea has tested a higher percentage of their population than any other populous nation (the latter needed to be said because places like the Faroe Islands are going all out to test.)

South Korea moved their new case growth from exponential to linear fairly early, around March 7th.

Nevertheless, the linear growth in total cases since then, with daily additions around 100 per day, has resulted in nearly a fourth of all cases coming during the linear growth stage.

Furthermore, half of all deaths have occurred the past 12 days or so.

Their total active cases have been declining linearly since about March 15th. But with the continual addition of cases daily, the total active cases will not hit zero, but soon stabilize near 2k.

And then… if they lift their own lockdowns and social distancing, there will be a second wave.

This is a long haul, all the way through 2020. Sorry that this is not what we want to hear, but this is a slog that will be around for quite some time.

re: #16 Joe Bacon 🌹

If I had a tape recorder going when Grandma Bacon talked about the pandemic. It was chilling…

Twenty five years ago, in 1995, I spoke with Ruth Brikeen in Kerrville, TX. She was on her third husband, having outlived the two previous. (He could drive!) She was born in 1901. She grew up in Ballinger, Texas, where my mother-in-law also grew up. My wife’s grandfather, Ross Smith, was the mailman in Ballinger. My wife’s grandmother married him in 1918. She was a year older than Ruth, they were friends, and my mother-in-law was born in 1922.

Ruth was 18 when a troop train came through town in 1919.

That was the basic intercontinental transportation at the time. The train was full of sick soldiers. Within two weeks, the virus was kicking ass in a small central Texas town, a county seat, with maybe 8,000 people. Ross Smith, as the mailman, was the primary source of knowledge of who was ill. He delivered the mail every day. If the mail piled up, he called the Sheriff, who sent doctors to the home.

They often found whole families dead. Sometimes, there would be dead adults with a child or two still alive.

It was, Ruth said, an unmitigated hell.

And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Cruise lines started cancelling around March 12, a bit less than eight weeks ago. (I know it seems like forever.) As to “floating death traps,” I’d rather be on a cruise ship now than in a lot of states. At least they’d be observing proper quarantine regimens.

No, they’re not. They are stuck on cruise ships that no-one will allow to disembark passengers.

The plague cruise ship Zaandam with ill passengers and four deaths was initially barred from traversing the Panama Canal to return to its planned destination of Fort Lauderdale; other ports in Latin America would not allow it to dock. Apparently, Panama Canal has reconsidered and the ship may be able to continue — but there’s no guarantee that Fort Lauderdale will accept it.

Ghost ship.

I can almost see the these ships doing what the Navy did in WW2, taking the bodies of the dead up onto the top deck, giving them honors and salutes, and sliding them into the ocean as war dead, returning them to the sea.

Necessary in WW2, horrific in 2020.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts on Saturday extended his enforceable order limiting gatherings to 10 people to seven more counties in Nebraska, as 10 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Omaha area.

Ricketts’ order now includes Butler, Hall, Hamilton, Merrick, Polk, Seward, and York counties and effectively shuts down the dining rooms of restaurants and bars and shutters theaters, churches, schools and gyms. It also limits social gatherings such as weddings and funerals to 10 people.

The area covered under the new extension covers some 123,000 people — including those in Grand Island, Central City and York — in a block spanning central and southeastern Nebraska.

More than half the state’s population is now under lockdown. We’re not on lockdown, just locked into the Panhandle.

Thousands of people and employees interact every day. And there are thousands of similar truck stops across the country. This is the vector for the red states that has not even been mentioned.

Oh, the burden of email.

There is not a constellation of words that could describe my disgust of people who claim that they work super hard because ‘meetings and emails.’

If it’s so goddamned hard, go get a job in fast food. Or hospital housekeeping. Or your average warehouse.

I mean, fuck, FedEx is hiring package handlers constantly! you don’t even have to fill out a real application!

Of course that’s because it’s physically draining and wildly dangerous, and your options are: follow the safety rules and get fired for being too slow, or don’t follow the rules- which means you WILL get injured, and they WILL blame it on you. And you may get fired. So the attrition rate is close to 100% year over year. I tried it for about two months before I realized it was a countdown until a muffler or box of free weights came down on my head.

I think the breaking point was watching a woman with a leg-cast chucking truck tires from one belt to another. Because that’s normal and safe.

But fucking emails? Meetings? Bring it on! I’ll do it for a fraction of what these guys get for sitting on their ass between ‘business’ golf outings and lunches.

I’m getting a real bad feeling that all hell is going to break loose within the next two weeks. If we thought it was bad now we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Keep remembering what Grandma told me about the 1918 pandemic when people literally dropped dead a couple hours after they started coughing. The DC government took over warehouses and meeting halls under eminent domain and stacked bodies in seized buildings as if they were cordwood. At the peak they cremated corpses and placed unclaimed bodies in a potters field. Grandma said it got so bad that funeral parlors got backlogged and there had to be mass funerals. Everyone wore masks dipped in camphor.

The press blamed Wilson for the epidemic and that’s the reason why the Democrats got slaughtered at the ballot box in 1918.

Ann Ashford is one of three Democrats facing off in the May 12 Democratic Primary. The winner will face Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE2) in November.

Candidates in Nebraska are taking their campaigns on-line to avoid issues with the novel corornavirus. Some asshat crashed her virtual town hall by posting endless amounts of porn to her chat (I presume a Republican did that).

I can almost see the these ships doing what the Navy did in WW2, taking the bodies of the dead up onto the top deck, giving them honors and salutes, and sliding them into the ocean as war dead, returning them to the sea.

It is also permitted to those retired from the maritime services (though your estate has to pay to ship your remains to Norfolk or San Diego).

When I was in the Navy, a short time after we pulled out to sea from Norfolk there would be funeral services aboard ship, as noted in the Wikipedia article above.

A lot of naval combat films use that as a way to wrap things up after the climactic fight.

I did not see the movie version of _The Enemy Below_ until a number of years after having read the book. A lot of my late pre-teen and early teen reading was picking through my parents’ bookcase or stuff my older siblings had gotten. So I ended up reading a lot of late-50s/early 60s paperbacks. The Ian Fleming James Bond novels among them.

Transiting the canal requires putting at least one highly specialized local pilot aboard for the best part of a day or more.

According to the report, one White House adviser stated at the time, “If tonight isn’t Trump saying, ‘This is bad and could get very worse, you need to take every precaution necessary,’ then he can kiss a second term goodbye.”

However, the president ignored that advice, with Politico noting, “Instead, the president, in hastily arranged remarks, said he was barring all travel from Europe and promised that health insurers had agreed to cover all coronavirus treatments. Investors panicked — would necessary cargo still be allowed to come into the U.S.? Insurers were taken aback — they had only agreed to cover coronavirus tests, not all treatment.”

And like all experts in his admin, he ignored them to listen to the sniveling little weasels who told him what he wanted to hear, namely that everything was alright and his leadership would be that which saved the nation.

I think it was tunnel vision: he saw a strong economy as the best chance to get him re-elected and COVID was a threat to the economy.

The notion that strong, decisive leadership in times of crisis could have helped him even if the economy suffered did not seem to occur to him at the critical moment, as he lacks the skills and temperament (along with the resources and advisers) to display such leadership.

Personally thinking he was acting in the way he has been described as acting while in charge of his organization: A dictator who gives orders and expects underlings to make them happen, with the understanding that any positive results will be attributed to his “leadership” and any negative results blamed upon his soon-to-be-fired subordinates. Husband works in construction and is the senior superintendent overseeing 4 buildings being built simultaneously on a new city college campus. Construction is considered essential so he goes to the job site everyday. There is only one person more senior than him on the site, the project manager — who stays in his trailer all day everyday while husband is the guy in the field. On Wednesday an employee for a subcontractor went home sick at noon. At 6:50am on Thursday he went to the ER, unable to breathe. By 3:00pm that day he tested positive and is now in ICU. Husband found out at 5:30pm yesterday via an email attachment the subcontractor sent out laying out the timeline. Husband is fucking furious. Project manager said he would call him to talk about it and husband told him not to call, that it would not be a good conversation.

So husband’s boss knew. People in the office knew. Did they tell husband’s boss not to tell him? Because if that turns out to be the case, he will likely not be employed there anymore as of tomorrow. Fuckers.

No opportunity to do contact tracing because husband doesn’t know exactly who it is, since he works for another company. He thinks he knows who it is but not sure. So how the fuck do we know who might need to quarantine?

What’s fucking terrifying is not the rate at which the deaths are multiplying so much as the speed that people are being reported as succumbing to the virus. It seems we don’t go a day without hearing about someone who was fine or just had a cough one day and was dead within 72-96 hours later.

unproven innocence  Mar 29, 2020 • 6:48:21am

For a few days now, I’ve been troubled by one aspect of the info available on covid19.healthdata.org
—namely, projections for # deaths. Compared to my own simplistic modeling, they seemed to be way too low, by a factor of about 20 to 40.

Now I understand why. Excerpt from healthdata.org

Length of the epidemic

Why do your estimates only go until July? Does that mean the outbreak will be over then?

Our model says that social distancing will likely lead to the end of the first wave of the epidemic by early June. The question of whether there will be a second wave of the epidemic will depend on what we do to avoid reintroducing COVID-19 into the population. By end the of the first wave of the epidemic, an estimated 97% of the population of the United States will still be susceptible to the disease, so avoiding reintroduction of COVID-19 through mass screening, contact tracing, and quarantine will be essential to avoid a second wave.

The italicized (and bolded by me) part is why. I’ve been assuming one wave, perhaps slowed/stretched out significantly by social-distancing, self-isolation, ramping up testing, etc.

In summary, the published # deaths estimates are (currently) for only about 3% of our population(s) infected in the near future, so read the numbers with that in mind.

Neat fact: The original ending scripted and actually filmed for World War Z involved Pitt’s character crash-landing in Russia, where he ended up fighting a barricade situation against the zombie hordes. As it’s during a Russian winter, the temp drops to biting cold quickly, leading him and the defenders to realize (as in the original novel) that the zombies become lethargic and can even freeze in deep cold. This (rather than the BS “they sense illness”) is what turns out to be the turning point in the war against the undead.

Of course it does. Laredo to Denton and all spots in between. Golden Triangle on IH-Ten to El Paso, IH-20/30 from Texarkana to Midland, the same.

No. Please re-read the excerpted part carefully. The modelling assumes, based on confirmed cases (swear words here), and success at halting (or greatly slowing/blunting, and even reversing) the current outbreak (dubious, IMHO), so that it does not exceed 3% (of the various populations, and the US as a whole) over the next several weeks.

Personally, I think we are *way* past 3% already, that one wave is a near certainty, and so the published # deaths in the near future is therefore too low by a factor of 30 or so. The biggest uncertainty remaining is how effectively we can still SLOW IT DOWN to avoid lots of deaths overall by not utterly overwhelming (and breaking) our heathcare systems and other essential services.

Greets and saluts from the stormy NYC metro area. We have a t-storm moving through at the moment, and once it passes, the weather should clear up a bit.

That’s the good news.

The bad?

Fauci is warning that we’re going to see 100,000-200,000 killed from covid19 this year.

And it’s going to happen in a compressed time period.

So of course fucknuts like Candace Owens thinks that this is no big deal and that the flu kills more.

Heck, there are fucking bots who are claiming that there’s a covid19 vaccine (there isn’t).

Trump’s continuing failures have a lasting effect on the economy and health systems nationwide. We would not be in this position had Trump taken this seriously in January and February.

And again, the bots and magadiots are claiming that impeachment was a distraction. Except that a president has to deal with multiple crises and events every fucking day and if you can’t multitask, you have no business being anywhere near elected office, especially one like the presidency. It’s an admission that he’s absolutely overwhelmed by this while excusing his incompetence and blaming others for his irresponsible acts.

We are continuing to learn that the admin knew and did nothing.

We are continuing to be reminded that there was a stockpile of PPE and that Trump even sent a bunch of gear to China to help with their crisis (which coincidentally was the right thing to do), but then did nothing to restock our own supplies, or prepare for this crisis.

The body count continues growing on a daily basis, and it wont be long before we see a death toll exceeding 9/11. That’s on Trump because he could have minimized this crisis with the aggressive actions to test and quarantine and contact trace.

Fuck Trump and fuck the enabling and complicit GOPers who continue to not only protect Trump, but are pushing Trump’s irresponsible take at the state and local level.

I remember watching a WWII documentary the other day and hearing a German soldier who’d been on the front lines getting sent home due to injury. And what amazed him was to walk the streets and see absolutely nothing resembling a country in the midst of war. No rationing, no people in drab clothing, no signs calling on people to do without for the war effort, nothing that would indicate that people back home were being asked to sacrifice anything. Even during the bombing campaigns, they would still have cities lit up at night because Hitler did not want the people to think that the war was in any way a danger to them.

Contact your doctor and inform them. Talk to them and indicate that you’ll do the self quarantine for 14 days to be sure, and then provide contact tracing info as best as you can.

Your doctor may put you in touch with the local public health department, who might ask for that info too.

Any info you provide could save lives downstream too.

No. Please re-read the excerpted part carefully.

We’re nowhere near 3%. Yes, the testing numbers are certainly low by a factor of 2 to 10, but that maybe gets it to .5%. If it truly is at 3%, then either we’re totally missing 300,000+ dead bodies or it really is less deadly than recent flu.

My personal worst-case projections are based on:
1. 60% of the population catching it. This is unlikely for reasons to be discussed below, but if C19 is left TOTALLY unchecked, it ought to be able to do at least that much.
2. Hospitals being overwhelmed as most of those come through in one month’s time. With hospital facilities available, fatality rate is somewhere between .5% and 2%. But depending on the source, about 10%-18% need hospitalization. So if hospitals don’t have facilities - which is more than JUST beds, but ventilators and healthcare professionals and support staff - then most of that number dies.
3. And with hospitals overwhelmed, other emergency medical care doesn’t exist, so you lose maybe another .1% to 1%.

Which (raw ballpark) numbers something like 30-40 million dead in the US.

That’s worst-case, and it’s not realistic. Reality is not simple percentages, and the truth is if millions of people are dying, then everyone with even vaguely functional brains will isolate themselves. So yeah - the first wave will, even if government utterly fails, end in some kind of containment much lower than the everyone-gets-it number. You can argue what the shape of the curve will be - I think we could see some flattening in about another week if what is being done is sufficient, but I fear that too many places are half-assing isolation efforts and we’ll end up with 5-6 day doubling on a national level at the end of April.

I could make guesses about the eventual course of things, but the problem is the fucking morons in the white house are complete fucking morons and whatever I imagine, they’re going to completely fuck up.

Some quick numbers - if we keep the current death doubling rate, we’re less than a month away from 1 million deaths. But the infection doubling rate has slowed just a bit, so it’s probably not going to go quite that fast. And maybe the states will get their asses in gear.

And maybe the horse will sing.

The worst case scenarios also take into account that health professionals are among the hardest hit. We’re already seeing that undermine readiness at hospitals and medical facilities throughout the NYC metro area. First responders, NYPD, FDNY, and EMS are all taking significant hits to their readiness because of covid19 cases in their ranks.

Doctors and staff are also MIA thanks to need for quarantining and testing positive, and as more test positive, the load for the remaining staff is even greater as the flow of cases increases.

It’s going to be a perfect storm of awfulness thanks to Trump’s absolute failures to do anything to mitigate this in Jan-Mar 2020 when the public health experts were warning him to do just that. He ignored all of them and lied about how this would all go away.

Vodka is supposed to have a neutral flavor, so brand isn’t nearly as important as with flavored spirits. And mythbusters or another program showed how you could use a water filter to make any vodka taste better with additional filtering before drinking.

It is also permitted to those retired from the maritime services (though your estate has to pay to ship your remains to Norfolk or San Diego).

When I was in the Navy, a short time after we pulled out to sea from Norfolk there would be funeral services aboard ship, as noted in the Wikipedia article above.

They also made an exception to allow Dennis Wilson to be buried at sea.

I’m actually looking forward to doing a cruise… in about a year.

I was curious, so I checked. Disney Cruises are only suspended through April 12, and you can book cruises now for passage May 8, if you have a death wish.

Okay gonna get out for a drive. No plan to stop anywhere just drive where it’s green and uncrowded, then cruise home. Maybe take a packed lunch to eat by myself out there. Get a little sun, watch a mild storm come in from the coast.

I had over 40 ship cruise tours on the Rhine booked for this season. All cancelled through to the end of April and I cannot imagine that more than a handful will come through if at all, perhaps late in the season (September/October)

But most of these passengers are retired people, I would not want to risk being stuck on a plague boat.

We go to the Finger Lakes pretty regularly and hit the same wineries time and again. Each vintage is different, sometimes good, some times not so much. The Mrs. and I have what we consider a refined palate, but will buy only what both agree is good.

We also look for offbeat types and varietals that have unique characteristics.

I remember going to Napa on our honeymoon and stopped into a bunch of wineries. Stags Leap Wine Cellars was one of the stops, and they were quite gracious. At the time they had free tastings, so being newlyweds we got treated - including a taste of their premium vintage. We liked their cabs quite a bit, but then had a try of their premium, and while it was a bit smoother, I don’t know if it was truly worth the premium cost.

I like value wines - ones that are very good compared to their price. And that’s all relative.

For beer, I like my IPAs, but the mrs. can’t really stand them. She’s a porter, bock, stout and darker. I like those too, so it’s a good mix of beer in the house. We drink what we like, and if we have company over, that’s what they drink too.

We’re nowhere near 3%. Yes, the testing numbers are certainly low by a factor of 2 to 10, but that maybe gets it to .5%. If it truly is at 3%, then either we’re totally missing 300,000+ dead bodies or it really is less deadly than recent flu….
….
3. And with hospitals overwhelmed, other emergency medical care doesn’t exist, so you lose maybe another .1% to 1%.

Which (raw ballpark) numbers something like 30-40 million dead in the US.
….

Just a couple comments: If it were 3%, then we would expect 9,000,000 cases — and at a 1% mortality rate, it would be 90,000 deaths — not 300,000 missing deaths.

I think the total extra deaths due directly or indirectly if we don’t take more action could be 3-6 million, not 30 to 40 million.

It’s the speed, ease, and availability of influenza testing that makes those statistics possible. We’re likely going to be debating the “real” number of COVID-19 cases for years, simply because it took weeks to get testing started, longer to get it to more than a handful of people a day, and we still haven’t reached a period where everybody who should best tested is being tested. And any estimate is likely to miss a whole of “mild” cases or asymptomatic carriers who gave it to everyone around them without ever knowing they were carrying COVID-19.

I lived an hour from Napa and me and the Wife Unit had some of our early Important Moments there. Lots of good wine there but you have to search for the values. The diff between the great wines for $$$ and value wines wasn’t that much on flavor. So much ridic pretentousness in wine.

Went to Hunter Valley AUS on our last ‘wine tasing’ trip. Every winery’s best stuff was probably $65 and could go up against any $150 Napa. Aussies keep it funky and use screw caps.

Once a Knick, always a Knick - Stephon Marbury steps up for NYC.

Former New York Knicks star Stephon Marbury is working to try and get 10 million N95 masks delivered to New York City from China, according to The New York Post.

Marbury is working to try and get the masks at a cost of $2.75 each, which would be below the $7.50 price tag that they are usually sold for. Marbury has been in touch with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

“At the end of the day, I am from Brooklyn,” Marbury told The Post. “This is something that is close and dear to my heart as far as being able to help New York…I have family there in Coney Island, a lot of family … who are affected by this, so I know how important it is for people to have masks during this time.”

Again, he is fixated on a strong economy as being the only thing that can guarantee him re-election because his pea-brain cannot get a hold the idea of the value of strong leadership during a crisis.

The economy is going to take a hit. Just sending people back to work will not re-boot the economy: people will still be staying away in droves from crowded areas, events, resorts and theme parks, movie theaters, sporting events, etc…

Just sending people back to work will not put people back to work. A sizeable chunk of the workforce will not be returning to the shop and firing up the boiler. Millions of rerplacement workers will have to be recruited, vetted, trained and acculturated. That’s weeks and months.

The reality: Trump campaigned on sustained 3% growth and promised it could go as high as 5-6% if Congress worked with him. And while he’s managed a few adjusted quarters of 3% or higher, he’s never managed to sustain such over even a six month period during any time in his presidency. And this despite constant promises that this deregulation, that trade deal, or the $2 trillion that was pissed away in tax cuts was going to lead to a “boom” that would finally see sustained growth as he campaigned on.

In fact, that tweet is just more of the same: Excuse-making for failed promises while making further promises he knows will never come true.

[snip]

We do local (at least pretty close) most often when it comes to wine. Last 3 bottles of wine we had this past week were Shippenville Red from Deer Creek Winery just a bit east of here. The other was a red from Wilhelm Winery just a few miles up the road. I really liked the Shippenville Red.

I am pretty sure my 70 year old mom has it. She has had a dry cough for a week. No other symptoms though. My aunt and uncle who she spends a lot of time with were down for a week in bed with all of the symptoms, fever, fatigue, cough etc. They are both on the mend and my mom says she is feeling better. But my dad and brother who live in the same house have shown no symptoms at all. None of them have been tested.

I imagine that is playing out all over. When all of this is said and done and we can look at it in the rearview mirror we are going to find it was far more widespread than was being reported and with a lower mortality rate than we are seeing from just confirmed cases.

re: #200 unproven innocence

For a few days now, I’ve been troubled by one aspect of the info available on covid19.healthdata.org
—namely, projections for # deaths. Compared to my own simplistic modeling, they seemed to be way too low, by a factor of about 20 to 40.

Now I understand why. Excerpt from healthdata.org

Another thing about the healthdata.org site: it projected 437 deaths on 3/28 (or in the range of 380-508). In fact, there were 525 deaths yesterday. Similar for preceding days. The projections are being overtaken by reality.

They say “We are updating the model regularly to track new numbers and changes in these policies, and the estimates may change accordingly.” So maybe this will be updated after the weekend.

An emergency room physician from one of the hardest-hit parts of Italy reminded us of the same thing when asked about Italy’s high mortality — they are not doing wide testing, so only people who are really sick are counted. (South Korea and the Diamond Princess did broad testing, and report low mortality. For the rest, we don’t know.)

It also bears repeating that Italy’s 10,000 deaths is from a population of 60 million.

Screw caps are fine for the vast majority of wines but the US market still likes corks. Aussies DGAF. For a wine that needs actual aging a case can be made for cork. Marketing found out that pretentiousness increases profits.

While that is possible, there is also significant under-reporting of cases, especially deaths. Nobody seriously believes that China has had basically no new cases for weeks.

The tests themselves are not necessarily reliable. A recent batch of test kits out of China showed only about a 30% reliability rate. With variability in testing it is hard to put much stock in rate of cases. Death rates and hospitalisations are probably our most reliable data right now.

What we are seeing is that given the incubation time, the deaths are basically baked in for the next few weeks. Even with stringent isolation, Italy and Spain had death doubling rates of 3 days for at least two weeks, and Italy is finally starting to slow its death doubling rate to 5-6 days after nearly a month of isolation. That still means weeks to months of death doublings before things may get under control. The same will happen here, except America will continue to have fresh outbreaks as states and cities continue to pretend that isolation is unnecessary.

Ayep, even if the outbreak hadn’t occurred, most forecasts for this year (barring major events) were in the 1-2% range. The reality was that there was simply no real place for the economy to go, as “record” UE rates meant businesses had little room to grow. Wages were remaining stagnant or seeing modest gains, which inflation was only too happy to eat up and ask for more. The only thing that was going anywhere was the stock market, and we saw how quickly that crashed the moment the least bit of uncertainty asserted itself.

Yeah; she also noted that prices will probably start coming down soon as well; tourist season in Prague (and Czech Republic in general) is done for this year. I have a former student who used to own a travel agency, and he’s got pretty solid instincts when it comes to tourism trends. I’ll have to ask him his opinion on when things will start to recover. Tourism isn’t to be sneezed at here - it accounts for ~10% of total GDP.

There’s one on the underside of the truck, but I’ve never taken it out to look at it, so it may be flat, too.

I do have a compressor, so I can pump up the flat and drive to wherever I’ll get the new tires. Might as well get 5 and have the spare replaced too, I guess.

I think it will be worse than we thought but in context of the ‘Do Nothing/Do Something/Do a Bunch’ spectrum. Depending on areas of the country there should be some epistemic data to gain knowledge that ‘over reacting’ did make it much less bad than it could have been. Some will still fight the data, but there are still flat earthers.

The major center for coronavirus infection in France is the Grande Est, centered around the town of Mulhouse.

Why there? Because between the 17th and 25th of February there was an meeting of 2,500 evangelicals in Mulouse.

In retrospect it was the start of mass infection in France. La Bombe Atomique.

Cases as far away as French Guiana have been traced to the meeting.

The situation in the Grande Est is so critical that patients are being evacuated to Germany and Switzerland, Bordeaux and Nantes, by ambulance, helicopter, military airlift and whole medicalised TGV trains. 1000 volunteer doctors and nurses from the rest of France are arriving starting this morning.

Praise the Lord!

Wow, I remember watching that back in the day when I was in high school. Would’ve been in late 1986…film studies class. Only difference was because the Film Studies (and English lit) teacher was personal friends with Ursula K. LeGuin, he asked her to come in and take questions from us after we watched the last episode. Which she did. Which was all kinds of awesomesauce.

Bill Moyer interviewed Ursula LeGuin about the book and the making of the movie. It’s pretty awesome too.

A former student of mine who now works in Prague real estate messaged me this afternoon and she noted that there’s now over 1,000 brand-new rentals available in Prague 1 (city center, basically). They were formerly AirBnB units.

She said, “My god, AirBnB has collapsed almost overnight.”

This is going to sound awful, but I’m glad. When AirBnB was merely someone renting out a room (and I did it a couple of times that way when going to Boston), it was fine. But when whole apartments and neighborhoods were removed from housing stocks, it drove up rents everywhere. If this brings back some sanity to the rental market, that’s fine with me.

I’ve been thinking about the PBS movie of Ursula LeGuin’s “The Lathe of Heaven” a lot recently. It’s about a man (George Orr) who’s dreams change reality, and the doctor who tries to use his dreams to “fix” the world. The scene below happens after the doctor suggests that George dream about overpopulation:

My ex-GF got a nasty letter from the City of Frankfurt, reminding her that if she rents her place out more than a few weeks a year while she is on vacation, then she is in violation of city zoning ordinances and subject to a fine.

She was in between jobs and doing quite well sub-letting her place (the landlord allowed it), going off on trips, or staying with me or other freinds.

AirBnB of course does not give a shit about such matters…

I don’t understand this mindset at all. It isn’t a “lack of faith” to obey government mandates. The government is not “closing churches” because they’re cracking down on Christianity. There is literally no religious reason that holds water that they should continue to do this, and in fact, risking people’s lives is the least Christian thing they can do.

The irony.

Mom is 75 and we are in that transition where I’m starting to have to watch over her a little more and be the ‘adult’ more often. Such is life.

In this CV pandemic I’ve had to halt convos with ‘Mom, hold on. You need to hear this.’ Holding firm, reviewing facts, sharing interpretations, so she can make decisions, before she starts talking about whatever else pops into her mind. It’s been working for the most part but it’s been a long slog.

While in that moment I think about my own politics over the years and how a component of them was a reaction to my own parents, namely mom/her side of the family. There was a significant element of rebellion against my annoying Mom’s Side when I was first charmed by the philosophy of Libertarian Gliberty. Even thought they ended being, for the most part, on the right side of things, they made a horrible case for it, and I held them accountable for that.

But now, I think of that Sexton thread on the American political system and how that would have been outright rejected by my Mom’s Side, even though they were Democrats. Probably even only 10 years ago, definitely by my Uncle, a staunch pro Union/anti-Government/latent vanilla racist Democrat.

She just shared that Sexton thread I posted on Facebook. A few days ago, when The Wife Unit was setting up a weekend meet with mom, she told Wifey ‘whatever my son agrees is safe or approves.’

It’s so ironic that I hold that much sway over her now. but she still likes fucking pineapple on pizza so whatever.

OK, that reminded me of back in 1999 when stupid me stood in the entrance to a shopping mall across from Temple Square in Salt Lake City and watched a tornado leap over the Mormon Temple. I would call these people dumbasses, but I was a dumbass for standing there.

I went to a hurricane party in Texas. Yah.. it was awesomely stupid. Got lucky and didn’t flood my car with the storm surge.

I was able to take a shower and cut my toenails. I’m not much better, but I’m not getting worse. I’m going to survive. Thanks for all your support.

Here’s what I posted on FB

Things I’m learning as a recover from the corona virus.
The pain is intense, the fatigue is overwhelming, but I’m lucky. I’m recovering at home. People are bringing me food. Thanks Katherine Koegel. I will survive.
I’m 59. (Sorry Sasha, I’ve been lying about my age since you were born.) I get how this virus kills people. The body has no resistance. I’m not sure if any older version of me could handle this.
Anyone that puts corporate profits above the health of the country is not your friend and never will be.
Same with anyone who knows more than the entire medical profession.
Grandmas and Grandpas are worth protecting.
This is my mid-life crisis. I did not ask for it, but here it is. When this is over, I’m going to do what I love and ignore most of the rest. If I fail, I will fail at what I love, what has meaning for me. I feel like I no longer have a choice. Life is short.
Stay home and love (from a distance) the ones that matter. Ignore the haters.

Millions do watch…out of morbid curiosity. There’s some entertainment value in watching a presidency slowly die.

I may have the details wrong — someone here can correct them? A few days ago someone posted a link to a professor who warned about his experience. He was trying to teach students about religious grifters and thought it would be effective to expose them to how these con artists operate; to his dismay, he discovered that instead of being outraged by their dishonesty, the students were persuaded by the sermons. Propaganda works — and watching it can be dangerous to your mental health and your moral compass.

Germany originally had a low mortality rate — less than .3% — when many other European nations were showing a rates of 1% or much higher. Well, the rate continues to creep up; it’s now .79%. My prediction last time — and it remains unchanged — is that the rate will eventually reach 1.5%. Of their 60,659 cases, 50,966 remain active and 1,979 are in serious/critical condition. They do have top quality medical care — maybe they have developed treatments that will keep the CFR lower.

You’re probably right in that assessment. Germany has good healthcare, and has tested enough to get positives into medical intervention early. But while this prolongs life, it still appears that the longer one is on assisted breathing the more likely one is to die from Covid-19.

This is happening with the Grand Princess too. The death count there is up to 10. The longer the critical cases linger, the more likely they’ll end up on the fatality list. Having high quality health care prolonged their lives… but may not be enough.

529
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 29, 2020 • 12:02:51pm

Besides deaths, the “serious/critical” count in Germany has also been low.

But not any more. It shot up to 1,979 when it started in two digits.

I suspect that in the US, people who finally go to the hospital or call an ambulance are in a late stage of infection. This makes the CFR seem high because these people get tested.

I can see that - some folks like a style, and have a palate accustomed to a version, anything that diverges even slightly will have issues.

I’ve gotten some small batch gins from local distilleries on my travels, and they are aromatic and herbaceous in ways the big brands never would be. Unique drinks that you could just sip neat or with a bit of ice.

Small batch gins are wonderful and the reason why my gin collection is taking over the kitchen.

Yet another Republican governor grabbing the Theocracy brass ring under the cover of a pandemic:

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ medical procedures order to slow coronavirus halts abortions

An aide to Gov. Kim Reynolds said Friday that an order she issued this week to slow the spread of coronavirus had outlawed abortions in Iowa, but that interpretation was never explained to the organization that performs most abortions in the state and only came to light after it was released to a conservative talk radio host.

The abortion decision comes amid actions to slow the spread of coronavirus and to conserve medical equipment in case a surge of cases hits hospitals in coming weeks.

Iowa is experiencing a jump in confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with public health officials on Friday reporting 56 new positive tests and two additional deaths. Iowa now has 298 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and three deaths from the virus, according to public health officials.

Reynolds spokesman Pat Garrett said Friday the proclamation Reynolds enacted Thursday “suspends all nonessential or elective surgeries and procedures until April 16th, that includes surgical abortion procedures.”

Reynolds, a Republican and vocal abortion opponent, has publicly voiced her intention to find a way to end abortions in Iowa, if possible.

News that her proclamation would temporarily outlaw abortion came after a social media post by conservative Des Moines radio host Simon Conway, who posted a text he’d received from Garrett.

Funny thing is, here in California we’re not doing elective surgeries, but somehow figured out that an abortion may be an important necessary health decision.

Wow. Somebody holds Señor Snort’s feet to the fire!

“How can you be sure this economic tragedy won’t be longterm if there’s not a guarantee people will have jobs to return to?” Raddatz said. “I don’t see how it can be just weeks.”

“Well, listen, I say that — weeks — it could be four weeks, it could be eight weeks,” Kudlow replied. “I say that hopefully and I say that prayerfully. That’s what some of the science experts have been telling us. I don’t know if they’ll be right.”

Raddatz interrupted to point out that Kudlow had called the COVID-19 outbreak “contained” in an interview on CNBC.

“It was just a month ago you told CNBC that you thought the virus was contained in the country even though doctors were warning otherwise,” Raddatz observed. “You also downplayed the threat of a long-lasting economic tragedy.”

“Why should people trust you?” the ABC News host wondered.

Well, no.

No republican has followed any “advice” that could reduce the death toll because the current so called government has given none.

What Hillary, or, fuck any competent president, possibly even including the shrub, could have done is given a clear line and support for the states.
