It pains me to agree with this, because there is no fundamental reason why religious people should be in opposition to science. I still believe the two can live harmoniously, if the religious part is approached temperately and with a realistic understanding of what the teachings actually mean. But the fundamentalists are doing their damnedest to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I think it had something to do with trying to influence shipping decisions by local government in my case. (We always use the Post Office, not commercial shippers who won’t deliver here without threat of a lawsuit.)

I feel like, that if they federal response wasn’t a shit dumpster, nuclear waste ridden coal fire, then these donations would be welcomed by all quarters. The fact that they are using a % diff in wealth in the new gilded age to shame one of the few billionaires that seems to try to live noblesse oblige may or may not help.

Wealth tax would be more effective. Take the money from the Koch’s and Adelson’s of the world. If they don’t like it they can invest it in future businesses that actually solve our problems instead of fake wines and gaud.

My cousin in Michigan was complaining that people from Detroit will be seeking out hospitals in central and western Michigan when they are overwhelmed in Detroit.

I pointed out that will happen everywhere, and if the situation was reversed (the most cases were in Grand Rapids or Traverse City) then people would be headed to Detroit.

I actually sort of get “liking” him. He sounds like a lot of loudmouths I’ve met who appeal to certain folks. I definitely get “following him.” Hey, I remember Jim Jones. If you are not scared then you’re ignorant and/or not paying attention.

Quit watching the news all of the time. It has been really hard for me, i almost constantly listened to the news. Now, I watch the network nightly news and only on local news cast and try to limit myself to online news. If there is real news or a breakthrough it will make itself known.

I have been having problems with panic attacks and stress. I have employees and their families counting on me to make the right call, I don’t have the luxury right now of getting in the weeds.

I hate having to rely on our current government. We will get through this if we use our heads, follow science based and common sense orders, stay more aware than the people we are dealing with and constantly wash our hands.

These are scary times that none of us have dealt with before. If you aren’t scared or are making light of these times then I have no use of you.

Long story short, your wife is right to be scared and is a good person for being so. Give her my best, we will get through this.

South Korea has tested a higher percentage of their population than any other populous nation (the latter needed to be said because places like the Faroe Islands are going all out to test.)

South Korea moved their new case growth from exponential to linear fairly early, around March 7th.

Nevertheless, the linear growth in total cases since then, with daily additions around 100 per day, has resulted in nearly a fourth of all cases coming during the linear growth stage.

Furthermore, half of all deaths have occurred the past 12 days or so.

Their total active cases have been declining linearly since about March 15th. But with the continual addition of cases daily, the total active cases will not hit zero, but soon stabilize near 2k.

And then… if they lift their own lockdowns and social distancing, there will be a second wave.

This is a long haul, all the way through 2020. Sorry that this is not what we want to hear, but this is a slog that will be around for quite some time.

Twenty five years ago, in 1995, I spoke with Ruth Brikeen in Kerrville, TX. She was on her third husband, having outlived the two previous. (He could drive!) She was born in 1901. She grew up in Ballinger, Texas, where my mother-in-law also grew up. My wife’s grandfather, Ross Smith, was the mailman in Ballinger. My wife’s grandmother married him in 1918. She was a year older than Ruth, they were friends, and my mother-in-law was born in 1922.

Ruth was 18 when a troop train came through town in 1919.

That was the basic intercontinental transportation at the time. The train was full of sick soldiers. Within two weeks, the virus was kicking ass in a small central Texas town, a county seat, with maybe 8,000 people. Ross Smith, as the mailman, was the primary source of knowledge of who was ill. He delivered the mail every day. If the mail piled up, he called the Sheriff, who sent doctors to the home.

They often found whole families dead. Sometimes, there would be dead adults with a child or two still alive.

It was, Ruth said, an unmitigated hell.

And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

There is not a constellation of words that could describe my disgust of people who claim that they work super hard because ‘meetings and emails.’

If it’s so goddamned hard, go get a job in fast food. Or hospital housekeeping. Or your average warehouse.

I mean, fuck, FedEx is hiring package handlers constantly! you don’t even have to fill out a real application!

Of course that’s because it’s physically draining and wildly dangerous, and your options are: follow the safety rules and get fired for being too slow, or don’t follow the rules- which means you WILL get injured, and they WILL blame it on you. And you may get fired. So the attrition rate is close to 100% year over year. I tried it for about two months before I realized it was a countdown until a muffler or box of free weights came down on my head.

I think the breaking point was watching a woman with a leg-cast chucking truck tires from one belt to another. Because that’s normal and safe.

But fucking emails? Meetings? Bring it on! I’ll do it for a fraction of what these guys get for sitting on their ass between ‘business’ golf outings and lunches.

I’m getting a real bad feeling that all hell is going to break loose within the next two weeks. If we thought it was bad now we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Keep remembering what Grandma told me about the 1918 pandemic when people literally dropped dead a couple hours after they started coughing. The DC government took over warehouses and meeting halls under eminent domain and stacked bodies in seized buildings as if they were cordwood. At the peak they cremated corpses and placed unclaimed bodies in a potters field. Grandma said it got so bad that funeral parlors got backlogged and there had to be mass funerals. Everyone wore masks dipped in camphor.

The press blamed Wilson for the epidemic and that’s the reason why the Democrats got slaughtered at the ballot box in 1918.

We had the same experience here in Czech Republic - those tests only had a 20% to 30% accuracy rate. Essentially useless, though the Czech government was too polite to officially say anything about it.

I did not see the movie version of _The Enemy Below_ until a number of years after having read the book. A lot of my late pre-teen and early teen reading was picking through my parents’ bookcase or stuff my older siblings had gotten. So I ended up reading a lot of late-50s/early 60s paperbacks. The Ian Fleming James Bond novels among them.

Husband works in construction and is the senior superintendent overseeing 4 buildings being built simultaneously on a new city college campus. Construction is considered essential so he goes to the job site everyday. There is only one person more senior than him on the site, the project manager — who stays in his trailer all day everyday while husband is the guy in the field. On Wednesday an employee for a subcontractor went home sick at noon. At 6:50am on Thursday he went to the ER, unable to breathe. By 3:00pm that day he tested positive and is now in ICU. Husband found out at 5:30pm yesterday via an email attachment the subcontractor sent out laying out the timeline. Husband is fucking furious. Project manager said he would call him to talk about it and husband told him not to call, that it would not be a good conversation.

So husband’s boss knew. People in the office knew. Did they tell husband’s boss not to tell him? Because if that turns out to be the case, he will likely not be employed there anymore as of tomorrow. Fuckers.

No opportunity to do contact tracing because husband doesn’t know exactly who it is, since he works for another company. He thinks he knows who it is but not sure. So how the fuck do we know who might need to quarantine?

—namely, projections for # deaths. Compared to my own simplistic modeling, they seemed to be way too low, by a factor of about 20 to 40.

The italicized (and bolded by me) part is why. I’ve been assuming one wave, perhaps slowed/stretched out significantly by social-distancing, self-isolation, ramping up testing, etc.

In summary, the published # deaths estimates are (currently) for only about 3% of our population(s) infected in the near future, so read the numbers with that in mind.

Neat fact: The original ending scripted and actually filmed for World War Z involved Pitt’s character crash-landing in Russia, where he ended up fighting a barricade situation against the zombie hordes. No. Please re-read the excerpted part carefully. The modelling assumes, based on confirmed cases (swear words here), and success at halting (or greatly slowing/blunting, and even reversing) the current outbreak (dubious, IMHO), so that it does not exceed 3% (of the various populations, and the US as a whole) over the next several weeks.

Personally, I think we are *way* past 3% already, that one wave is a near certainty, and so the published # deaths in the near future is therefore too low by a factor of 30 or so. The biggest uncertainty remaining is how effectively we can still SLOW IT DOWN to avoid lots of deaths overall by not utterly overwhelming (and breaking) our heathcare systems and other essential services.

Fauci is warning that we’re going to see 100,000-200,000 killed from covid19 this year.

And it’s going to happen in a compressed time period.

So of course fucknuts like Candace Owens thinks that this is no big deal and that the flu kills more.

Heck, there are fucking bots who are claiming that there’s a covid19 vaccine (there isn’t).

Trump’s continuing failures have a lasting effect on the economy and health systems nationwide. We would not be in this position had Trump taken this seriously in January and February.

And again, the bots and magadiots are claiming that impeachment was a distraction. Except that a president has to deal with multiple crises and events every fucking day and if you can’t multitask, you have no business being anywhere near elected office, especially one like the presidency. It’s an admission that he’s absolutely overwhelmed by this while excusing his incompetence and blaming others for his irresponsible acts.

We are continuing to learn that the admin knew and did nothing.

We are continuing to be reminded that there was a stockpile of PPE and that Trump even sent a bunch of gear to China to help with their crisis (which coincidentally was the right thing to do), but then did nothing to restock our own supplies, or prepare for this crisis.

The body count continues growing on a daily basis, and it wont be long before we see a death toll exceeding 9/11. That’s on Trump because he could have minimized this crisis with the aggressive actions to test and quarantine and contact trace.

Fuck Trump and fuck the enabling and complicit GOPers who continue to not only protect Trump, but are pushing Trump’s irresponsible take at the state and local level.

I remember watching a WWII documentary the other day and hearing a German soldier who’d been on the front lines getting sent home due to injury. And what amazed him was to walk the streets and see absolutely nothing resembling a country in the midst of war. No rationing, no people in drab clothing, no signs calling on people to do without for the war effort, nothing that would indicate that people back home were being asked to sacrifice anything. Even during the bombing campaigns, they would still have cities lit up at night because Hitler did not want the people to think that the war was in any way a danger to them.

We’re nowhere near 3%. Yes, the testing numbers are certainly low by a factor of 2 to 10, but that maybe gets it to .5%. If it truly is at 3%, then either we’re totally missing 300,000+ dead bodies or it really is less deadly than recent flu.

My personal worst-case projections are based on:
1. 60% of the population catching it. This is unlikely for reasons to be discussed below, but if C19 is left TOTALLY unchecked, it ought to be able to do at least that much.
2. Hospitals being overwhelmed as most of those come through in one month’s time. With hospital facilities available, fatality rate is somewhere between .5% and 2%. But depending on the source, about 10%-18% need hospitalization. So if hospitals don’t have facilities - which is more than JUST beds, but ventilators and healthcare professionals and support staff - then most of that number dies.
3. And with hospitals overwhelmed, other emergency medical care doesn’t exist, so you lose maybe another .1% to 1%.

Which (raw ballpark) numbers something like 30-40 million dead in the US.

That’s worst-case, and it’s not realistic. Reality is not simple percentages, and the truth is if millions of people are dying, then everyone with even vaguely functional brains will isolate themselves. So yeah - the first wave will, even if government utterly fails, end in some kind of containment much lower than the everyone-gets-it number. You can argue what the shape of the curve will be - I think we could see some flattening in about another week if what is being done is sufficient, but I fear that too many places are half-assing isolation efforts and we’ll end up with 5-6 day doubling on a national level at the end of April.

I could make guesses about the eventual course of things, but the problem is the fucking morons in the white house are complete fucking morons and whatever I imagine, they’re going to completely fuck up.

Some quick numbers - if we keep the current death doubling rate, we’re less than a month away from 1 million deaths. But the infection doubling rate has slowed just a bit, so it’s probably not going to go quite that fast. And maybe the states will get their asses in gear.

And maybe the horse will sing.

There were about 30 to 40 people lined up to go in. They were all BUNCHED UP. No 6 foot separation at all. Needless to say, we waited unto the doors opened and these idiots entered the store. As an added bonus, we were some of the few people wearing both masks and gloves. Several others had on only gloves (better than nothing I guess). Everybody else, nada. Stopping in the isles to yack with friends as if there was nothing to be concerned about. How we only have two confirmed cases in this city/county is beyond me.[/ranton] Thankfully we will not have to go out again for at least two weeks.

The worst case scenarios also take into account that health professionals are among the hardest hit. We’re already seeing that undermine readiness at hospitals and medical facilities throughout the NYC metro area. First responders, NYPD, FDNY, and EMS are all taking significant hits to their readiness because of covid19 cases in their ranks.

Doctors and staff are also MIA thanks to need for quarantining and testing positive, and as more test positive, the load for the remaining staff is even greater as the flow of cases increases.

It’s going to be a perfect storm of awfulness thanks to Trump’s absolute failures to do anything to mitigate this in Jan-Mar 2020 when the public health experts were warning him to do just that. He ignored all of them and lied about how this would all go away.

Vodka is supposed to have a neutral flavor, so brand isn’t nearly as important as with flavored spirits. And mythbusters or another program showed how you could use a water filter to make any vodka taste better with additional filtering before drinking.

What’s weird is that Tito’s used to be a discount vodka until it was rebranded as premium.

I totally believe that - it’s very flavored for an “unflavored” vodka and I can’t stand it. I think you could make like a cupcake-flavored vodka out of it and it would at least meet expectations.

I am a Costco fan, and their spirits are pretty good. Their vodka is a good value (and I’ll use that to make vanilla extract/infusion for the mrs. baking needs) , and their gin (which I drink neat or mixed with ginger beer or tonic or whatever else is on hand) is in the Bombay style. The Mrs. does like her bourbons, so that’s her jam. I don’t mind scotch, and prefer the Johnny double black.

I had over 40 ship cruise tours on the Rhine booked for this season. All cancelled through to the end of April and I cannot imagine that more than a handful will come through if at all, perhaps late in the season (September/October)

We go to the Finger Lakes pretty regularly and hit the same wineries time and again. Each vintage is different, sometimes good, some times not so much. The Mrs. and I have what we consider a refined palate, but will buy only what both agree is good.

We also look for offbeat types and varietals that have unique characteristics.

I remember going to Napa on our honeymoon and stopped into a bunch of wineries. Stags Leap Wine Cellars was one of the stops, and they were quite gracious. At the time they had free tastings, so being newlyweds we got treated - including a taste of their premium vintage. We liked their cabs quite a bit, but then had a try of their premium, and while it was a bit smoother, I don’t know if it was truly worth the premium cost.

I like value wines - ones that are very good compared to their price. And that’s all relative.

For beer, I like my IPAs, but the mrs. can’t really stand them. She’s a porter, bock, stout and darker. I like those too, so it’s a good mix of beer in the house. We drink what we like, and if we have company over, that’s what they drink too.

It’s the speed, ease, and availability of influenza testing that makes those statistics possible. We’re likely going to be debating the “real” number of COVID-19 cases for years, simply because it took weeks to get testing started, longer to get it to more than a handful of people a day, and we still haven’t reached a period where everybody who should best tested is being tested. And any estimate is likely to miss a whole of “mild” cases or asymptomatic carriers who gave it to everyone around them without ever knowing they were carrying COVID-19.

I lived an hour from Napa and me and the Wife Unit had some of our early Important Moments there. Lots of good wine there but you have to search for the values. The diff between the great wines for $$$ and value wines wasn’t that much on flavor. So much ridic pretentousness in wine.

Went to Hunter Valley AUS on our last ‘wine tasing’ trip. Every winery’s best stuff was probably $65 and could go up against any $150 Napa. Aussies keep it funky and use screw caps.

Again, the 30-40 million is total zombie apocalypse meltdown territory. As I discussed, it’s not a realistic figure, merely an absolute worst case. Mostly I’m throwing that out there because some of the supposedly academic projections I’ve seen this week are pure propaganda bullshit in the other direction. If I had to bet, I’d put my marker on .5M to 1.5M, with the precise number controlled by how competently the states act.

Former New York Knicks star Stephon Marbury is working to try and get 10 million N95 masks delivered to New York City from China, according to The New York Post.

The italicized (and bolded by me) part is why. I’ve been assuming one wave, perhaps slowed/stretched out significantly by social-distancing, self-isolation, ramping up testing, etc.

In summary, the published # deaths estimates are (currently) for only about 3% of our population(s) infected in the near future, so read the numbers with that in mind.

Another thing about the healthdata.org site: it projected 437 deaths on 3/28 (or in the range of 380-508). In fact, there were 525 deaths yesterday. Similar for preceding days. The projections are being overtaken by reality.

They say “We are updating the model regularly to track new numbers and changes in these policies, and the estimates may change accordingly.” So maybe this will be updated after the weekend.

An emergency room physician from one of the hardest-hit parts of Italy reminded us of the same thing when asked about Italy’s high mortality — they are not doing wide testing, so only people who are really sick are counted. (South Korea and the Diamond Princess did broad testing, and report low mortality. For the rest, we don’t know.)

It also bears repeating that Italy’s 10,000 deaths is from a population of 60 million.

While that is possible, there is also significant under-reporting of cases, especially deaths. Nobody seriously believes that China has had basically no new cases for weeks.

The tests themselves are not necessarily reliable. A recent batch of test kits out of China showed only about a 30% reliability rate. With variability in testing it is hard to put much stock in rate of cases. Death rates and hospitalisations are probably our most reliable data right now.

What we are seeing is that given the incubation time, the deaths are basically baked in for the next few weeks. Even with stringent isolation, Italy and Spain had death doubling rates of 3 days for at least two weeks, and Italy is finally starting to slow its death doubling rate to 5-6 days after nearly a month of isolation. That still means weeks to months of death doublings before things may get under control. The same will happen here, except America will continue to have fresh outbreaks as states and cities continue to pretend that isolation is unnecessary.

The reality was that there was simply no real place for the economy to go, as “record” UE rates meant businesses had little room to grow. Yeah; she also noted that prices will probably start coming down soon as well; tourist season in Prague (and Czech Republic in general) is done for this year. I have a former student who used to own a travel agency, and he’s got pretty solid instincts when it comes to tourism trends. I’ll have to ask him his opinion on when things will start to recover. Tourism isn’t to be sneezed at here - it accounts for ~10% of total GDP.

Reminder: there is a direct correlation between CV mortality rate and the overloading of the hospital system. The going rate seems to be before overload, 2% seems to be max mortality, after, well above 2%.

Mortality is X (plus other factors), then hospital overload is x Y.

It’s too little data and besides, your county is so rural you might be counting bodies for weeks after, finding people whom nobody checked in on.

Depending on areas of the country there should be some epistemic data to gain knowledge that ‘over reacting’ did make it much less bad than it could have been. Some will still fight the data, but there are still flat earthers.

In retrospect it was the start of mass infection in France. La Bombe Atomique.

The situation in the Grande Est is so critical that patients are being evacuated to Germany and Switzerland, Bordeaux and Nantes, by ambulance, helicopter, military airlift and whole medicalised TGV trains. 1000 volunteer doctors and nurses from the rest of France are arriving starting this morning.

She said, “My god, AirBnB has collapsed almost overnight.”

This is going to sound awful, but I’m glad. When AirBnB was merely someone renting out a room (and I did it a couple of times that way when going to Boston), it was fine. But when whole apartments and neighborhoods were removed from housing stocks, it drove up rents everywhere. If this brings back some sanity to the rental market, that’s fine with me.

My ex-GF got a nasty letter from the City of Frankfurt, reminding her that if she rents her place out more than a few weeks a year while she is on vacation, then she is in violation of city zoning ordinances and subject to a fine.

She was in between jobs and doing quite well sub-letting her place (the landlord allowed it), going off on trips, or staying with me or other freinds.

AirBnB of course does not give a shit about such matters…

The irony.

Mom is 75 and we are in that transition where I’m starting to have to watch over her a little more and be the ‘adult’ more often. Such is life.

In this CV pandemic I’ve had to halt convos with ‘Mom, hold on. You need to hear this.’ Holding firm, reviewing facts, sharing interpretations, so she can make decisions, before she starts talking about whatever else pops into her mind. It’s been working for the most part but it’s been a long slog.

While in that moment I think about my own politics over the years and how a component of them was a reaction to my own parents, namely mom/her side of the family. There was a significant element of rebellion against my annoying Mom’s Side when I was first charmed by the philosophy of Libertarian Gliberty. Even thought they ended being, for the most part, on the right side of things, they made a horrible case for it, and I held them accountable for that.

But now, I think of that Sexton thread on the American political system and how that would have been outright rejected by my Mom’s Side, even though they were Democrats. Probably even only 10 years ago, definitely by my Uncle, a staunch pro Union/anti-Government/latent vanilla racist Democrat.

She just shared that Sexton thread I posted on Facebook. A few days ago, when The Wife Unit was setting up a weekend meet with mom, she told Wifey ‘whatever my son agrees is safe or approves.’

It’s so ironic that I hold that much sway over her now. but she still likes fucking pineapple on pizza so whatever.

Germany originally had a low mortality rate — less than .3% — when many other European nations were showing a rates of 1% or much higher. Well, the rate continues to creep up; it’s now .79%. My prediction last time — and it remains unchanged — is that the rate will eventually reach 1.5%. Of their 60,659 cases, 50,966 remain active and 1,979 are in serious/critical condition. They do have top quality medical care — maybe they have developed treatments that will keep the CFR lower.

You’re probably right in that assessment. Germany has good healthcare, and has tested enough to get positives into medical intervention early. But while this prolongs life, it still appears that the longer one is on assisted breathing the more likely one is to die from Covid-19.

This is happening with the Grand Princess too. The death count there is up to 10. The longer the critical cases linger, the more likely they’ll end up on the fatality list. Having high quality health care prolonged their lives… but may not be enough.

Besides deaths, the “serious/critical” count in Germany has also been low.

But not any more. It shot up to 1,979 when it started in two digits.

I suspect that in the US, people who finally go to the hospital or call an ambulance are in a late stage of infection. This makes the CFR seem high because these people get tested.

I can see that - some folks like a style, and have a palate accustomed to a version, anything that diverges even slightly will have issues.

I’ve gotten some small batch gins from local distilleries on my travels, and they are aromatic and herbaceous in ways the big brands never would be. Unique drinks that you could just sip neat or with a bit of ice.

Small batch gins are wonderful and the reason why my gin collection is taking over the kitchen.

Kim Reynolds said Friday that an order she issued this week to slow the spread of coronavirus had outlawed abortions in Iowa, but that interpretation was never explained to the organization that performs most abortions in the state and only came to light after it was released to a conservative talk radio host.

The abortion decision comes amid actions to slow the spread of coronavirus and to conserve medical equipment in case a surge of cases hits hospitals in coming weeks.

Iowa is experiencing a jump in confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with public health officials on Friday reporting 56 new positive tests and two additional deaths. Iowa now has 298 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and three deaths from the virus, according to public health officials.

Reynolds spokesman Pat Garrett said Friday the proclamation Reynolds enacted Thursday “suspends all nonessential or elective surgeries and procedures until April 16th, that includes surgical abortion procedures.”

Reynolds, a Republican and vocal abortion opponent, has publicly voiced her intention to find a way to end abortions in Iowa, if possible.

News that her proclamation would temporarily outlaw abortion came after a social media post by conservative Des Moines radio host Simon Conway, who posted a text he’d received from Garrett.

Funny thing is, here in California we’re not doing elective surgeries, but somehow figured out that an abortion may be an important necessary health decision.
