The time is always right to say “Fuck Trump”.

In fact, I’d like to see “Fuck Trump” get into the language as thoroughly as “Goodman”, “Goodwife” did in Puritan New England.

A Louisiana inmate who tested positive for COVID-19 at a low-security prison died Saturday in what a prison official said was the first inmate death in the federal prison system, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. After reporting a frequent cough at the Federal Correctional Institution in Oakdale, Patrick Jones was taken to a nearby hospital on March 19 and put on a ventilator the next day, the Bureau of Prisons reported. He died eight days after he was hospitalized.

He is one of at least five inmates who tested positive for COVID-19 at the Louisiana prison, according to NBC News. At least 14 prisoners and 13 staff members tested positive for the virus across the federal correctional system’s 122 facilities as of Friday, the news division reported. Jones, 49, had been serving a seven-year sentence since April 26, 2017, following his conviction of cocaine possession with intent to distribute, prison officials said.

About Congresswoman Velazquez:

In a statement, the Democrat from New York said she first started feeling sick “in the wee hours of Sunday morning.”

“I developed the abrupt onset of muscle aches, fevers, nasal congestion and stomach upset. I noticed that I could no longer smell my perfume or taste my food. After speaking with The Attending Physician by phone, I was diagnosed with presumed coronavirus infection,” said Velazquez, 67.

“My symptoms are mild at the present time and I am taking Tylenol for fever, and isolating myself at my home. At the advice of The Attending Physician, neither COVID 19 laboratory testing nor a doctor’s office visit was recommended. I am carefully monitoring my symptoms, working remotely and in constant contact with my staff.”

I also notice that she’s taking tylenol. After much debate on nextdoor about concerns of taking ibuprofen, someone said our local hospital is recommending not taking it in the case of covid-19.

Idaho governor signs into law anti-transgender legislation

The Republican governor on Monday signed a bill that prohibits transgender people from changing the sex listed on their birth certificates, and another that bans transgender girls and women from competing in women’s sports.

The birth certificate legislation ignores a federal court ruling that a past Idaho law barring transgender people from making the birth certificate changes was unconstitutional.

Shit like this is why I have developed a bug out plan to get the fuck out of this Country if tRump is reelected. It will only get worse for the LBBTQ+ community.

jaunte  Mar 30, 2020 • 6:56:59pm

Conservative ideology continues to be pro-death:

“…Labor groups have argued that requiring paid sick leave would help contain the virus, allowing employees to stay at home when they get sick and not risk passing the illness on to others. But many of the state’s Republicans and conservative business groups have argued that sick leave ordinances — including similar ones on hold in San Antonio and Austin — are an overreach of city’s regulatory power and that it violates the Texas Minimum Wage Act.

There is no federal law requiring employers to provide paid, job-protected sick leave; 59% of small business employees have it, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ten states, 20 cities and three counties also mandate it.

Dallas’ ordinance requires one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours an employee works. Workers would be able to accrue up to 64 hours of paid sick leave each year. For employers with fewer than 15 workers, the amount would be capped at 48 hours, or six paid sick days.

“In the midst of a global pandemic, a federal court has just enjoined the Dallas Paid Sick Leave Ordinance. We are outraged by this decision and cannot imagine a time when paid sick leave is more important and more necessary,” the Workers Defense account tweeted Monday evening.

40
jaunte  Mar 30, 2020 • 6:58:04pm

True, but for small businesses that really are small businesses (i.e., not a hedge fund shell), it’s not so easy to require the employer to be on the hook for extensive sick leave.

It goes against the Religion of Conservatism.

The high priests of Conservatism have told the parishioners what they must be afraid of and why they must worship the unregulated free market, for the penalty is hell.

They really believe it. It’s why I walked out of a Memorial Day presentation a couple years ago when the invited wingnut started railing about liberals and LGBT people at that event. Tylenol also reduces fevers.

The NSAIDs discussion comes because the WHO seemed to recommend against them for a short period of time based on anecdotal data from France that many of the people ending up in their ICU had taken ibuprofen. That said, they subsequently clarified their comments that they were not advising against them at this time and there is no scientific data to support not using them.

There’s a nice summary of the whole mess here.

There are anecdotal reports that the French establishment doesn’t like ibuprofen and have shot off their mouths a few times and that’s leaked into the international recommendations.

The US medical establishment doesn’t hate ibuprofen, but they sure do seem to be in love with acetomenifen (gawd I can’t spell that tonight) because every time I’ve been recommended a painkiller in the last decade they freak out when I ask if they mean aspirin or ibuprofen.

All three have good aspects and bad aspects. Take the damn tylenol if you trust your liver, aspirin is safer in large doses if your stomach lining is intact, and ibuprofen is probably the best but the least safe to take too much of.

The point, if you have C19, is to reduce fever. How you get there is less important.

If I recall correctly, hospitals love Tylenol because it doesn’t thin blood and thus increase bleeding. And since it isn’t an anti inflammatory, it permits some inflammation which actually aids healing.

I’m not going to dig up a link, but my understanding is that the number of pharmaceutical drugs taken in France is just ridiculously high compared to similar European countries.

Trying to persuade French people to not take as many is probably a worthwhile thing to do even without possible side-effects with coronavirus.

Hrm. I refuse to use tylenol. Too many problems with that chemical (I _like_ my liver). I’ll stick to various NSAIDS instead.

Yes, but your liver at 104+F won’t work very well either.

If you had a childish, vindictive mind (like me) you could easily out-pedant him. This bit:

while forcing others to evolve into other animals.

Is total bollocks.

When I had eye surgery, I had a bad time with Tylenol-plus-codiene.

The reason they mix the Tylenol (paracetemol/acetaminophen) with the Codeine is to make sure you die if you try to have a good time. Can’t have people having a good time, it would offend God.

re: #69 klys (maker of Silmarils)

As I have written here earlier, the French medical tradition always advises against Ibuprofen and related pain killers in cases of viral infections; the reasoning being that it is better to let the fever run its course as it is part of our immune system reaction.
But it’s a matter of “tradition” rather than hard science, and other medical traditions (such as the US one) disagree on this. Medicine, it turns out, is still as much an art as it is a science… In fact, Ibuprofen is rarely the painkiller of choice in France, we tend to prefer paracetamol/acetaminophen-based ones (Tylenol) - and they are not without unwanted effects either.
Absent clear and definitive data on the matter, I follow “my” local tradition and trust “my” local doctors (I rarely use painkillers anyways); but other than this there is no strong evidence that Ibuprofen might be harmful.
