Story from the front lines:

A good friend works at a hospital in NY as a lab tech. She relayed that a woman was in hospital giving birth. Husband was able to come in and appeared to show some symptoms but lied about his condition. They found out later that he had covid19, and therefore exposed a number of people in the hospital. Congrats, you’re about to be prosecuted.

Another story from the front lines:
Friend who had presumptive case is on mend. Her husband had fever and all the symptoms and today the fever broke, but still had breathing problems. Needed to go to ER at doctor’s orders. They ran tests, and determined he had pneumonia, not covid19. Sent home. But they indicated that the hospital ER was a war zone. In-out was limited. Extensive screening.

Hello, ‘zards.

It’s been exactly a year since I last posted. Not because I’ve been away for a felony or anything, just stuck, I guess, neck-deep in the Slough of Despond.

Taking care of my old (97) mom, and we’ve been holed up for over two weeks now. Have at least a month’s worth of food but will run low on booze in another ten days or so, and will need to make an outing for more. This is not a pleasant prospect here in Louisiana, but then again doctors have been telling me for decades that the drink will kill me.

Here’s all good thoughts and hopes for all of you, and that we all can e-celebrate before too very much longer.

My wife works from home for a medical billing company. The company let go a number of underperforming people in order to keep costs down, but there might be more measures needed, like reducing hours or pay. One of their clients is a doctor who does Medicare, and has lost 30% of his patients to the virus. I don’t know who the doctor is or where he is located, but that is rough.

Magnitude matters but remember it’s worst at the epicenter.

Which in this case is quite a distance from any appreciable population.

A look at the DYFI map on the USGS website shows most places experienced it as light shaking.

Of course how you feel it depends on where you and it are, but that’s not a small earthquake, and calling it one smacks of coverup. (I’ve been reading about fracking in Oklahoma and what came of it, maybe I’m too paranoid. Or my awareness is heightened.)

EMS is getting hammered with more calls than they ever get in any 24 hour period. It’s nonstop calls for EMS. FEMA is apparently bringing in additional ambulances and staff to help.

NYPD is seeing 15% out sick.

FDNY are also experiencing sick workers.

And NY Transit (MTA trains and buses) are seeing significant cases, including multiple dead.

All of this could have been reduced in scope and toll had Trump taken any of the Jan/Feb briefings seriously and acted responsibly.

Instead, this toll is on him. All of it. Those dying in the line of duty - the NYPD, FDNY, EMS, and transit workers will not get a hero’s funeral because no one can pay their respects in person. Everyone will have to grieve alone.

Fuck Trump. Fuck the GOP. GOP delenda est.

hi.

Day one of the Nebraska Panhandle’s Targeted Health Directive from the governor (everything’s closed).

Tested positive: 177
Tested total: 3,209
Deaths: 3 (+1, in North Platte, Lincoln County)
Counties added: Scott’s Bluff, Kimball

In our little village, that closes the bar/community centre (except take-out), the church, and the beauty salon. The general store can stay open (as long as there are fewer than ten people inside as an essential business), as can the gun shop (but that is now by appointment only because the owner is dying of Parkinson’s disease), the landscaping firm, the co-op (essential business), and the art teacher (she only has two people at a time).

You can fit a lot of businesses in a town of 128.

I got the remaining parts for my quarantine guitar today and started building. I got to a certain point and realized I didn’t have the screws to attach the neck to the body so I ran out to Home Depot.

I gotta tell you, everyone there - customers and employees, many of them in masks and a lot of them without - looked absolutely whipped. Just an empty look in everyone’s eyes, full of uncertainty about whether their lives will even continue for much longer.

It felt like what I always imagined living in the old Soviet Union to be like for some reason.

It hurts my heart to see Americans like this. Maybe it’s my sense of exceptionalism talking, but we’re not supposed to be taking a whupping like the one we’re taking here.

After 9/11, the NYC Medical Examiner set up endless trailers outside their building to house remains of those who died on 9/11.

Now, every NYC hospital is seeing the need for overflow space for the bodies of those dying from covid19.

All of this is on Trump and the GOP that enable and protect the most corrupt and criminal and incompetent occupant of the WH for all time.

I fear for what happens next, as this isn’t going to get better for a long time to come. I fear for those who find out loved ones are sick and they can’t do anything because they need to remain at distance. I fear for those who live alone and have no support to help them should they get sick. I fear for all of us.

And so much of this could have been avoided with basic responsible governance. The GOP and Trump don’t believe in any of this. And that’s why I’m almost always angry these days (and my f-bomb quotient is now measured in the googleplex territory).

Trump and his cronies are all the Soviets portrayed in Chernobyl. You’ve got the Trump sycophants playing Chernobyl reactor officials who knew there were problems, lied about it, minimized the problem, made it worse, lied some more, and lied again.

You have the Fox media propagandists standing in for Pravda lying about the health, safety, and radioactive debris raining down all over Europe.

And you have Trump, lying to everyone about what happened, and that it’d go away.

No, it was A pandemic. And this one looks to have maybe lower deaths but higher economic impact.

BTW, I learned that there was a flu pandemic the year I was born that killed something like 116,000 Americans. There was also a bad recession that year, but I don’t think it’s clear the flu caused it.

Keep in contact, increase calls as her condition warrants but probably start at twice a day if she feels bad. have her give a key to a local contact or hide a key for first respoders in case you have to call them for her. If you’re religious, pray, if not, hope. Medcram is leaning toward heat/cold to stimulate the immune system to help fight the virus. I think you have to start several episodes earlier if you want understand the virus and what he’s talking about in the latest episode. It’s a very good series med students or doctors. They even have detailed instruction on how ventilators work.

I hear you.

I’m watching hospitals where my family got care (and where we were born) get flooded by covid19 cases and prepping for it by getting refrigeration trucks lined up to provide overflow space for the bodies.

I’m watching hospital staffers endure horrible conditions and keep working despite hospital managers demanding that they avoid talking about the dire conditions or complain about the lack of PPE and other equipment.

It pisses me off to no end.

Alabama nursing homes have been trying to keep the virus away from their patients. Our largest county health department just told them to accept active cases, citing CDC guidelines to treat cases in a medical setting.

Asshole trying yet again today to fly the notion that he was stuck with an ‘obsolete test” from the previous admin. Why, god, doesn’t one of the press corps ask if this doesn’t make Obama the greatest prophet in history, given that the virus didn’t even exist until three years into Trump’s admin?

It’s important to keep stuff like this front-and-center, because we absolutely cannot let Trump’s incompetence be forgotten.

But, goddamn; where I get upset is that there is at least a solid 40% of this country who will follow this fucker over a cliff. That all these established facts mean nothing to them. That these people, consciously or not, actually want a GOP dictatorship in this country.

The election in November is going to be a nail biter, and in a normal world, Trump should be on the business end of the worst electoral defat in US history.

Many of the ones who are not on board are not on board BECAUSE their lord and master changed his tune and announced that there would be 100,000 -200,000 deaths from the disease. And even some of those said that these deaths were going to come over the next couple weeks — and if they didn’t, that would refute the fear-mongering.

While it’s an interesting ploy, it won’t work in or out of Russia. No one’s buying that these supplies show anything other than Trump is a puppet; the Chinese supplies are a slightly different story. From inside Russia, not having those supplies when they are needed is going to damage Putin’s image. Here, we know Trump and the GOP are incompetent. Putin is supposed to be the leader and caretaker of the country (now, I suspect a lot of people don’t care for Putin, but strong leadership is what he’s worked to build, even ruthlessly).

The only source of funds he has is oil and gas. Both at unimagined lows. (Even when it was running well, the economy was smaller than Italy’s.) He can’t get to his new reserves without western technology, which he can’t get because of sanctions. His northern infrastructure is sinking into the earth as the permafrost melts. He also has covid-19, extent unknown, but if they’ve had to close off Moscow, it must be bad.

Coups and revolutions are impossible… until they happen.
