We’re up to the part of “Dark Shadows” where Laura Collins was defeated in killing David Collins in a fire so she could be reborn, Jason McGuire is introduced, and the set-up for Barnabas Collins is introduced (episode 210).

When NYC does our 2 minutes of noise at 7pm every day, I get that it’s supposed to coincide with shift change at the hospitals and let their staff know we’re thinking of them. But… I found it a really moving connection to my neighbors. People with balconies came outside, everybody else just leaned out the windows, yelling and clapping and banging pots and pans. It was a nice reminder of “we’re all in this together” from people who’ve been invisible all day.

Not going to go into a huge amount of detail, but I came home today to find that my mortgage servicer has threatened me with foreclosure. I only received this notice out of the goodness of the Postal Service writing my unit number on the notification. This explains why I have not received statements for months and months. And yeah, I kept sending in the same amount because gee, not much has changed over the years.

I am *incandescent* with rage. I couldn’t get into their website because it’s a creaky, cranky mess (the kind of thing that would get my evil too big to fail employer in trouble). I was on hold for an hour waiting to talk to a representative. No, I was not nice when I finally got through. I was pissed. I told her to put in the log “borrower is going to rip out the lungs of everyone she talks to.” After I got off the call, I was finally able to log into the website to learn that they put forced place insurance on my property from the moment they bought the loan in March 2019 and they’re charging me late payments. I sent the guy who is handling the foreclosure several emails and a copy of my HOA’s certificate of insurance.

At no time did these asshats try to contact me by phone, and they have my cellphone number.

I am so ticked off that I have made it very clear that if they do not fix this to my satisfaction, I will report them to every state agency where they are licensed and I will sue them. Because I am a tech manager for a bank, I know it is a major cluster to screw up something this important as an address on payments. And I figure that this has been screwed up from the moment they took over the loan.

First World Problems…yeah.

IT vs US vs Germany VS France graphs are below. Cases numbers are slowing. Death rates are not so much as those in the system, or newer severe cases from home are getting worse. US is at 2% fatality of confirmed cases and rising slowly.

Moving doubling to 4 days (currently ~3.5) leads to 6.5k deaths on Friday. At a 5 day doubling rate 31k deaths are expected by April 15th (22k at 6 day). The projections of 100k, 200k, 300k before this first wave has reasonably ended - assuming we can keep our shit together - are not unreasonable.

New cases per day in MA MI MS MO NY CA

Doubling rate based on a 4 day exponential fit. Less noisy than point to point. The rate slowing in NY is promising, because they are testing like crazy and shutting shit down. The MS data is questionable because neither of those things are true. Death rates are bad everywhere as we are just now seeing the beginning of the wave, which is further along (cases per million) in some areas.

NY and CA are stabilizing around 2% fatality per confirmed like the US overall. This will likely rise in the coming days as systems become overwhelmed. CA has been slower in new cases overall for awhile. NY had higher case doubling at first, but now is more similar to CA. NY death rate doubling remains very quick.

Overall, I mostly use the numbers now to consider what it will be like at home in a few days or a week based on another location. I compare/squint at NY, Italy, etc based on how I feel like the current conditions on the ground are. Importantly, you have to use the per capita (cases per million) to compare between places. A few more cases in MI do not mean things are worse, unless one considers the deaths per million. There are just too many differences in populations, health systems, and testing regimes to make too much sense of it. I’ll likely post again in a couple days or a week.

Stay in when you can. Plan your shopping carefully if you must go. Take your temp daily. Clean/quarantine what you bring in the house. Stay safe.

Even if they are not testing (not sure how much Florida is) a percentage of people (10-20% depending on the demographic) will seek medical attention. Usually first symptoms (~90% fever) occur 4-5 days on average. Following this, those that do get worse will have trouble breathing 8-9 days later. They will seek medical attention and then its much harder to not count them as either a case or when there is not ICU/ventilator as a death.

I’ve heard FL has a reasonable amount of beds and has been getting all they requested from Trump, so they may fare better on their capacity. The amount of older individuals and the lack of controls now will work against them.

We are at 3700+ deaths today, we will probably bust 5,000 tomorrow, and will most likely bust 7,000 on Thursday. This is what an exponential curve looks like.

The service industry is pretty much dead. The gig economy is pretty much dead. Manufacturing is pretty much dead. If you can’t work from home, your job is pretty much dead.

Don’t be surprised if unemployment hits 30% really fast. Maybe three months.

It’s as bad as it can be and the knock-on effects will make it worse.

I’m for the rack. If you can, have sweet scaly dreams. If not, may you have no dreams. Better than nightmares, eh?

Two More Covid-19 Cases Detected in the Panhandle (Goes to the Star-Herald in Scottsbluff, Nebr.)

That brings the total of cases in the Panhandle to four (one in Kimball County, three in Scott’s Bluff County). The two new cases are family members of the man in his 30s who was reported as positive yesterday.

One thing that helps account for Italy’s high death rate is that medical services were overwhelmed. They had to ration out care to those most likely to benefit from it. Another is the age of the population. And a third, harder to pin down, is testing and reporting. All through this, there were complaints that there wasn’t enough testing, so the cases reported were the more serious ones. Symptomatic at least, and maybe serious, and of course not counting the mild and asymptomatic cases will drive up the nominal death rate.

There’s a few restaurants doing well on takeout here, Arboleda’s, Pizza Getti, and on the Border. I haven’t been to them all to see how they are doing. The El Chico just completely shut down when it started.

As systems are overwhelmed, milder cases (from reports) are told to go home. Are they counted? It may be better to test health care providers if testing is limited.

It could also be the business idea of the outfit, buying old debts or loans, then making “mistakes” hoping people will pay up rather than contesting it.
Experienced it with the company that handled the financials for the condo association I rent my flat from, they outsourced things to that kind of firm. Us tenants and condo owners got sent bills (to the tune of $400-500 (4000-5000 SEK)) that we’d long since paid. Some googling on the company involved showed the same pattern, people getting bills sent to them that they had paid years ago, threatening foreclosure, enforcement etc. with the customary fees for such, the claims melting away if the customer potential mark appeared to have too good a check on their finances.
I informed the main firm handling the invoices and the condo association that ███████ ██████ appeared to be what’s known here as a “oseriöst företag” (rogue/frivolous company). Things were silent for a year or so, then it happened again. What made it worse was that many of tenants and condo owners have the fees and rents pulled automatically from our accounts at the end of the month.
When the condo associations chairman cleared his throat and asked the main firm handling invoices what the fuck was going on and got some lame excuse about having had a data breach.
And yeah, after some double-checking on part of our fearless leader, the association took its business elsewhere than the company (more than likely, it was in cahoots with the enforcement company). Not to mention that not too long later, the firm got its permit yanked in Finland for its business practises (and you really have to try to get your permit yanked).

Yes, the real uncertainty is how many of the people who are exposed are really going to get it? The estimates I’ve seen are “30% to 70%,” which I still read as “haven’t a clue.” (About 20% of Diamond Princess passengers and crew were infected.)

I am troubled by the level of paranoia. The fact is that that only fairly close contact with an infected (and contagious) person is likely to do it — everything else is a really off chance. Also, even with the lack of testing, we can say that the diagnosis is most likely not a death sentence, even If you’re in a higher risk group. Better too paranoid than too casual, I guess, but I hate to see people scaring themselves to death.

If sales were discouraged or even prohibited, then the prices that the companies involved could charge before running afoul of price-gouging charges would be way less than they can rob other countries for.

There was a short-lived Robocop TV series in the 1990’s. It wasn’t much to write home about, but the producers had Nelvana, the Canadian animation studio, make some commercials featuring Commander Cash, in the Robocop OCP universe.

The issue is why a plate is passed in a church. All these guys already have on-line donations, as well as mail donations.

The point is applying guilt to someone who doesn’t donate. All churches do this to some degree: If the plate goes round the congregation and you don’t put money in it, other parishioners will see that, and to a greater or lesser degree the parishioners will shun you.

Those big megachurches cost a lot of money to run (never mind the Prosperity Gospel grift). They have to apply pressure to put money in the plate, far more than the little rural church in my town to keep the lights on.

Federal Court Tosses Florida’s Poll Tax; Formerly Incarcerated People Can Vote in 2020

The plaintiffs (Florida) tried to force the issue into a two-part argument:

a) that felons saving up money to pay fines and court fees was not a substantial burden on their rights, and

b) tried to force the argument into racism territory using the arguments of civil rights groups that the law was racist in nature, so they could argue against that (because white felons were disenfranchised, too).

The court ignored (b) because the lawyers representing the disenfranchised felons didn’t make that argument, instead noting that the the franchise would be applied for those who could pay money, therefore it was unequal treatment under the law due to wealth, and therefore a poll tax.

(a) was dispatched, as the court found that a vote is not a “thing of value” and therefore could not be taken for a debt. They noted that the voters would be disenfranchised over and over again if they were poor and could not pay.

The court decision was unanimous. It is unlikely to be taken up by the Supreme Court in this session, so the law cannot be applied to the 2020 election.

It does make it much harder to see who is skimming from the collection plate beyond what salary a church might pay to its employees.

Sort of annoying how large groups use facets of law designed to help smaller, or volunteer, groups to get by in order to skirt laws and abuse things. Small churches, businesses, or farms don’t have a lot of extra time, resources, manpower to deal with the accounting and other requirements to track finances and so forth that closely - generally busy living hand-to-mouth.

Makes me want to have these laws adjusted based on scale of the enterprise - and perhaps how they are organized/incorporated as well. But that’s a whole additional set of bureaucracy and some convoluted tracking in terms of the latter. And political activities by churches need to be examined more closely as well - there are constitutional protections for free speech and such, but also claiming special privileges should imply additional responsibility (or perhaps additional scrutiny.)

The patrol said in a news release Tuesday that the shooting happened on March 15 at a home in Gordon in northwestern Nebraska. Initial investigation shows that Shanita Anderson, 44, of Gordon, was killed in an accidental discharge of a gun at the home, the patrol said. No other details of how the shooting happened were released.

Sheridan County is the county northeast of mine.

There is no such thing as an accidental shooting, unless a firearm malfunctioned. There are only deliberate shootings, and negligent shootings. The NRA’s own safety rules say you should maintain control of your firearm at all times, and a so-called “accidental shooting” is evidence the firearm was not under control.

The two family members exposed by the 30-something man in Scottsbluff to coronavirus (a woman in her fifties and a man in his seventies) are now showing positive symptoms for Covid-19 disease. They have been placed in quarantine.

Additionally, the man in the hospital in Kimball who was exposed to the virus in Colorado gave Panhandle Public Health District a list of the places he visited (a bunch of stores, a church, and two restaurants), so contact tracing is underway there as well.

Panhandle Public Health District previously closed all schools in the Panhandle until May 1.

In light of the cases now here (four), they have closed school for the rest of the school year.

Schools which have the capability to provide on-line lessons are doing so; schools which do not are either working with those schools or providing alternative work-at-home packages for students.

Additionally, public libraries in the Panhandle are also helping with distribution of lesson packets for students (including my town’s library).

Very late to this thread, but I lost my house in 2010 for this very reason. I was living in Costa Rica at the time but rented my house out and had a US PO box that my mother in law checked regularly for us. I never received any notice about forced insurance changing my payment amount, and only learned of the pending foreclosure auction when my tenant opened a notice that went to the house. When I called my mortgage company I found that a) my mailing address had been changed to a residential address in the same town as my P.O. box (and was not a place I knew), and b) by this time I owed more than $6k in penalties, fees, etc. I tried to fight it from Costa Rica but the process was already too far along. Plus I didn’t have the $6k they said I had to cough up to keep the house.

Additionally, where municipalities are reticent to apply strict controls, he’s shown he’s willing to use his gubernatorial bully pulpit for them.

So, we’ve learned that there are two carriers affected by covid19. Both are in the Western Pacific, which means that we don’t have any capacity to deal with a crisis against China at the moment.

We can’t exactly surge carriers either, since they’re dealing with covid19 too domestically.

And there’s always carriers in dry dock or other parts of the world that would take time to redeploy to Pacific meaning that we’re going to be stretched even thinner thanks to Trump’s absolute and total failure of leadership.

He’s leaving us even worse off.

One of my doctors yesterday was phoo-phooing the shortages in New York. I was kind of pissed at him for saying it yesterday and I’m more pissed today. I can agree with his concern about hospitals closing down other operations in order to be ready for a covid-19 spike, but he really downplayed how under equipped most locations are and how vulnerable everybody is.

I had a doctor I absolutely loved GO OFF about Obamacare some years ago. Some people deserved healthcare and others didn’t.

I’d been her patient for a decade or more. I never looked at her the same way again after that.

The NY budget is due April 1 at midnight. Even in good times, the state would miss the deadline, often by weeks and months and the state would pass interim budgets to keep the state afloat. With covid19, this is a unique challenge to try and forecast a budget when everything is collapsing at once.

Cuomo and the legislative leaders are trying to figure out the approach - a bare bones budget with authority to spend more or a packed budget that tries to account for as much as possible to deal with the threat.

There’s no right answer here. There’s only the least bad options as the state is struggling to cope with a massive hit to the budget (and the state is heavily reliant on Wall Street taxes). So revenues are expected to plunge. That would make the debt load even greater, throw off the pension funds too, capital projects, etc.

It would make the great recession look like child’s play.

The music in Patton really added to the movie. I get why Patton became the trendy WWII general after that movie. Not that he doesn’t deserve his accolades as a general but the movie and its soundtrack turned Patton into a timeless legend to the point where we hear Patton in George C Scott’s voice with Goldsmith’s score more than the man himself who sounded quite differently.

I think people aren’t fully aware to the extent of how terribly he screwed up. I’m hoping for investigations at some point because this was criminal negligence at best. Cowards can blame the impeachment all they want but the impeachment and subsequent Senate acquittal and Trump’s actions during and after in fact validate why impeachment was necessary. No one forced him to do rallies. No one forced him to spend December and January rage tweeting at Adam Schiff.

A good comparison point would be Canada. There are a country with a similar culture to ours and have roughly one tenth of our population. So we can assume that if both countries were taking similar steps to mitigate impacts from the virus, the Canadian numbers would be about 10% of our numbers. And that’s how it was in the early days of the outbreak.

Now, we have at least 190 000 confirmed cases within our borders (these numbers of course include those who have recovered).

Canada has only 8591. Multiply that by 10 and you get 85910, which is less than HALF the total caseload we’ve seen in this country.

But when you consider which country was quicker to enact lockdown measures and has the more competent leader, the disparity makes all the more sense.

So if the Federal Government had its shit together from the beginning, we’d be seeing FAR fewer cases than we have now.

This is ALL on Trump and even if he’s starting to realize how badly he fucked up that still doesn’t change the fact he is NOT able to handle this crisis.

Major shutdowns and closures started happening about three weeks ago today. In theory that means if we are making any progress flattening the curve, it should show in the numbers before too long (remember, we are behind Europe in terms of progression at this point).

But the worst case scenario is that the curve DOESN’T flatten and Trump decides that means social distancing and all this other stuff isn’t working so fuck it, we’re not going to bother with it anymore.

Also, let’s remember that just because some idiots are out there not taking this seriously doesn’t mean most of us aren’t.

Firstly, glad you’re still doing well.

Secondly, it’s hard to do a comparison of reported cases, as those are so subject to local variations. China, for instance, is clearly lying about all its data. Italy has even more cases than it reports, because as it says, it is only really testing people who present to the hospital due to the overwhelming situation. The US has by far the most reported cases and still rising, but it would not surprise me if Spain and Italy actually still had more cases. China clearly does.

What matters more is deaths, and specifically doubling rate of deaths. Italy and Germany are clearly bending that doubling rate downwards. It is still a bit early to tell for France and Spain, but they should hopefully be on that trajectory as well. Again, China is lying, so hard to include that. The US remains on a 3-3.5 day death doubling rate, with some areas doing better and some areas, like NY, doing worse.

i recently listened to an interview with director/actor Peter Berg who recalled going with his mom to pick up his dad from the wealthy suburban station near their home outside NYC and seeing the train vomit out a whole bunch of really drunk businessmen each day. Earlier today, a Trumpster friend who is moving out-of-state asked me to join him in person for one last time together before he departs in a couple weeks. It never dawned on him that this really violated our state’s official stay-at-home policy. But he really wanted to get together — and in pre-coronavirus days, I would have accepted the invitation. But too many of these people aren’t treating the virus with the urgency it deserves, because our President hasn’t.

Have to admit my Trumpster brother in Texas has been a fanatic about proper precautions. He and his wife “launder” their money, wear a mask and gloves when going out, clean everything, avoids personal contact with others. He treats this very seriously but still is blind to Trump’s flaws. And he finds excuses for his governor’s negligence in not imposing a statewide stay-at-home order.

i recently listened to an interview with director/actor Peter Berg who recalled going with his mom to pick up his dad from the wealthy suburban station near their home outside NYC and seeing the train vomit out a whole bunch of really drunk businessmen each day. He talked about seeing one guy fall out of the door and breaking his front teeth on the pavement. Most of the guys had been drinking since noon each day and continued on the ride home.

It issued the cordon around New Rochelle on March 10, thinking that it might be enough, but by then it was already out in the community and insufficient testing made containment all but impossible.

No state is doing nearly enough testing. In sheer numbers, NY is doing more testing than anywhere else, but on a per capita basis, other states are doing a better job.

In a NYTimes opinion piece today, the Republican mayor of Tulsa thought he deserved praise for issuing lock down orders on Saturday, when their first case was March 6. Gov Murphy presser: As of Wednesday, 355 people have died from COVID-19 in New Jersey and there are 22,255 confirmed cases.

Another local nursing home in NJ: 5 dead, 16 others infected with suspected cases among patients and 6 staffers.

Once it gets into the nursing home/adult facility setting, it spreads and the mortality rates skyrocket.

Want to try and bend the curve?

National guidelines for all hospitals and nursing home facilities - no visitors and everyone gets screened before entering. Aggressive testing.

There’s that phrase again: aggressive testing. Want to keep people safe, you need aggressive testing. Otherwise, cases will spread into these vulnerable populations and take far more lives.

A competent administration would have seen the China reports about covid19 and mobilized its efforts to try and get ahead of the crisis there.

A competent administration wouldn’t spend 3 months claiming that it would disappear on its own and cases magically go down to zero.

A competent administration wouldn’t claim that herd immunity would solve the problem and that viruses get weaker over time.

A competent administration would rely on public health experts and have them front and center during a crisis instead of contradicting said experts at every opportunity.

Trumpworld is not a competent administration.

I’m a nobody abs I saw it. Started going to the grocery store 3x a week stocking up on canned goods, pasta, rice, etc. and frozen foods. Got sanitizer, antibacterial soap, you name it.

I’ll repeat… I’M A NOBODY (who had to take biology twice to just pass it, and have little other hard sciences) and I saw this coming.

Northern NJ hospitals are starting to divert patients due to 100% capacity in overall hospital or ER facilities. 7 hospitals so far have indicated they’re diverting to other hospitals.

That’s up from 75,795 cases and 1,550 deaths on Tuesday. There were 965 deaths Sunday, meaning the number doubled in three days.
