A Fantastic Tiny Desk Concert by Michael McDonald, Working From Home [VIDEO]

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

After five-time Grammy winner Michael McDonald finished “Matters Of The Heart,” the opening song in his Tiny Desk (home) concert, there was a brief pause. The bewilderment on his face was unmistakable. It’s a look I believe we all can relate to in this moment of uncertainty. He sat in his home studio, complete with an illustration of the Tiny Desk drawn by Mr. McDonald himself. That pause, usually reserved for the anticipated applause, was replaced by complete silence.

The 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee then proceeded to play two 1978 Doobie Brothers classics that showcase his still-golden voice: “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes.” “If you know the words, sing along with me at home,” he said. “I won’t know if you’re singing well or not because I can’t hear you here.”

I sang along, and so will you.

We’re going to see in the next few months, whether the news media has the attention span of a hummingbird on crack or what.

If they stick with this, “Let’s dig into the tick-tock” of Trump’s bungled response the way they did with the Benghazi/emails nothingburgers, they might actually penetrate the Fox News fantasyworld.

Maybe.

I’ve never heard McDonald play piano this much, and wow, he’s great. Beautiful harmonic changes and voicings in his intro sections.

I’m measuring the death toll in Benghazis. We’re now well over 1100 Benghazis, and Fox is too preoccupied with Hillary’s emails or other bulkshit to pay attention.

I always thought he really upped the musicianship in the Doobie Brothers when he joined, and most of it was due to his piano playing.

It’s great to hear him solo, though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in a solo situation, it’s always been bands.

That Vanity Fair article is really something.

“…Hicks declined to comment. But Gidley, who is often in meetings with her and Trump, said: “No one has to give President Trump advice about being presidential—he is just a natural-born leader—and in this time of crisis, the country clearly sees the president is focused on the safety and security of the American people and always has their backs.”

One more for the lying quisling list.

The money paragraph in that story is the second to last:

The viral episode underscores ongoing tension around how the wealthy are dealing with coronavirus, as celebrities post videos from poolside isolation in their mansions and influencers seemingly jump to the front of the line for coronavirus testing.

Weird, I have to point out to the humans that the COVID victim vs flu victim thing forgets some math. COVID deaths are in addition to flu deaths. It’s addition, not division. COVID-No widely used treatment or cure, no vaccine. For the flu there is both. That’s called subtraction.

Trump said it was just a bad flu and they are still going with that in spite of recent developments.

Cuomo has pretty much said as much - that docs/staff who help here will get reciprocation as we help out elsewhere, just as we did after 9/11 and helped with disaster relief in the Gulf Coast, send firefighters to help with wildfires, etc.

Trump doesn’t get any of this. Or that ventilators are one of those things that if you have 100 in use, and 1 more patient comes in needing one, that person is now SOL. They die. Those needing ventilators are staying on it longer than for other ailments, so it’s eating up the resources faster than other diseases, including the seasonal flu (which should be winding down, and for which we have a vaccine).

On Earth B, President Clinton is facing calls by Congressional Republicans for an investigation into her “socialist” uses of the DPA to not only force American companies to produce protective gear and medical equipment for the ongoing crisis, as well as the ongoing moratorium on sales of said gear to our allies in their time of need. House Speaker McCarthy has promised that there will be a thorough investigation into this and rumors reported on by Fox News that governors are being extorted into “donating” to the Clinton Foundation in exchange for badly needed medical equipment.

He would absolutely try to keep it secret. Hell, he basically admitted that they lied about him getting tested with the whole “if I did test positive, I wouldn’t tell you” bullshit a couple weeks ago.

The problem is, he’s in an incredibly high risk population - elderly and obese, probably has other health factors working against him. Most likely, if he got it, we would know because he’d be admitted to Walter Reed and we’d be dealing with Acting President Mike Pence.

Think it should be kept in mind that Repubs were pretty good about keeping it secret that Ron was progressively losing his mind to Alzheimer”s until after he’d shuffled out the gate for the final time. All they had to do whenever a reporter sniffed too close was threaten to accuse them of engaging in “communist propaganda.”

Look at the ink being wasted on Donny’s “tone.” You think these morons would risk their “access” to report that he’d been infected?

I occasionally keep thinking that the only way we’re going to get rid of the current GOP is to have to suffer through this. It has to be shown that nearly every decision they make is detrimental to the lives of people.

I don’t think it’s going to do any good. The fucking idiot “independents” and the Bernie Bro suicide bombers saw what a monster he was and thought “Eh, how bad could it be?”

I said this last night: Trump supporters will follow him over a cliff. Full metal “If we can’t have this country, we’ll fucking burn it down and take all of you with us.”

The Bern Outs are already making noises about “protest” voting again. I’ve been very clear about what I think about “independents”: so wrapped up in Magic Balance Fairy thinking, they’re incapable of making a rational choice.

We need the last two groups to do the right thing. Which they were mentally incapable of doing in 2016. I have no confidnence that Trump hastening the deaths of hundreds of thousands of their friends, family, and fellow citizens will make one goddamn difference.

Oh, sure. I can easily see a scenario where he walks out to the podium, gasping for breath and sweating, and insisting he was invulnerable to the virus.

The thing is if he actually goes down, the fucking chaos in the White House will be insane. Do you think for one moment, the Children of the Corn (particularly Ivanka) or his minions are going to let Pence take over?

Basically Wilson’s wife running the Presidency all over again.

Wilson was one of the last pre-modern presidencies. With modern media, and the attention that the presidency gets today, not to mention Trump’s twitter addiction, I find it very hard to believe we could have a scenario like that again. Particularly with Trump’s understaffed administration (if you want to argue that Reagan was losing it, he at least had a fully staffed administration that could run with the boss “on vacation”).

They were able to keep that secret because Ronnie had a super-competent VP, who’d been secretly doing most of the foreign policy and national security stuff already (and half the domestic policy as well).

Ronald Reagan was one of the greatest actors of all time, playing a role on campaign stops, TV speeches, public events, in-person meetings with people who English wasn’t their first language. He could memorize his part, read cue cards, improvise when needed, and smoothly repeat the lines being fed to him through his earpiece. HW was a policy guy, with zero stage presence.

I’m pretty sure Reagan stopped being the “real” president halfway through his first term.

Governor Ricketts is still a conservative, even if he is handling the outbreak better than most GOP governors.

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement following news that TC Energy is moving forward with construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

“The long-awaited start of construction on the Keystone XL pipeline is tremendous news for Nebraskans,” said Gov. Ricketts. “The project will upgrade our energy infrastructure, increase our nation’s energy independence, and bring great-paying jobs to our state. Additionally, several Nebraska counties will benefit from a surge in property tax revenues from the pipeline project.”

Hey you people who live in the Sandhills? Who cares about your water supply?

Don’t be too sure. There’s something called the obesity paradox in ARDS. Meaning obese people are more likely to go into ARDS but once there they have better overall outcomes than non-obese folks. The trick right now is getting a ventilator, and I’m sure they have several reserved just for him.

Ok, that was different.
It’s a small place, most of their business was always take-out/delivery, but they had a couple tables.

Had a table blocking your way about a step in the door, hand written sign telling you due to COVID-19 you will need to wait outside for your order. Place smelled heavily of disinfectant. young daughter/cashier wearing mask/splash shield and gloves comes over from the regular counter to take cash. Can see pop/cook in the back with regular mask and gloves.
Was surprised Mom wasn’t there, she usually is, expediting everything
But, young daughter had it going, including going in back to tell pop to hurry the hell up

lol

My favorite chinese place here is China Express. I’ve seen two of the daughters work their way through the joint. Now it’s the youngest daughter, who obviously speaks perfectly good english, so even though she looks to be maybe 11, she does a lot of the front work. She must have decided last time that she knew me well enough to venture, “So how are you this fine day?” It did make me smile.

I’m dependent on transit. The drivers are screened for temperature. Most of my trips have no more than 6-10 passengers, which gives us all distance. These are food, medicine or work trips for us.

As much as I wish I could avoid everything, I’m compelled to take a slight risk, and I am doing what I can to minimize risk to others.

Unfortunately, as with so many lifestyles of the rich and famous, Elizabeth Warren came along and ruined everything. Bloomberg’s presidential ambitions are all over, and instead of sushi, his former campaign staff will have to settle for egg noodles and ketchup. Bloomberg fired everyone in early March, despite having promised most of them employment (at $6000 a month) through at least November. He graciously allowed them to keep their iPhones and MacBooks.

Wonkette said nice things about Bloomberg’s beautiful promises before they were revealed as nothing but lies. We officially retract that and declare him a big suckball.

Ok, I am going to call it. Gun control is a DEAD issue. We can take it up later, but not while the enemy is inside the walls. The Russian-incited crazies and their even crazier theocrat allies are already getting violent. It is going to get exponentially worse when their relatives start dying like flies and they respond like Pavlov’s dogs to the inevitable GOP effort to shift blame for the disaster to Mexicans, Asians, Jews, and “libs” in general. They have been preparing for this for decades. It is very late in the game but not quite too late. It is helpful that Trump has left the gun stores and ranges open. This was for the benefit of violent RWNJs and Cheeto’s de facto kook-militia, but anyone can use them.

Spain’s daily death report of 923 is also a high for them. And the UK sent a high in daily deaths.

Many other nations I strongly suspect are just undercounting. I put India and Brazil and possibly Indonesia in this category. They just don’t have the infrastructure to do the testing and recording for the size of their populations. Also I strongly doubt that the many inhabitants of Brazil’s slums are being properly counted. This will be a problem for Mexico city too, in the near future.

That is okay. One of my neighbors has a dog that barks at everything. Scares the daylights out of me but the neighbor assured me she does not bite.

Here in San Diego county, we have about 1 reported case for every 4500 people. This is much lower than the Florida counties with urban populations. Gee… I wonder why?

Well, to be fair, there are a fair number of Trump constituents who believe that 9/11 was also a hoax.

Conspiracy dupe wrecks train. Let that sink in. It is not even surprising. There are millions of these brainwashed dipshits, and they are all armed.

Swore years ago that I wasn’t going to be the most lightly-armed asshole on my Alabama street.

When someone asks How can jet fuel burn steel beams?!?!?!?!, just note to them that “who the hell knows what’s in those chemtrail canisters that aircraft carry? That stuff probably burns at really high temperatures.”

Swore years ago that I wasn’t going to be the most lightly-armed asshole on my Alabama street.

When I first moved here and met the local gun shop owner, he made a pitch to sell me a pistol for “home protection.”

I pointed out I didn’t need one, as I have a .12 gauge shotgun.

He asked why I would use something like that; I pointed out “because a shotgun is about as sporting as a water hose, and I don’t intend to be sporting.”

I’ve never heard McDonald play piano this much, and wow, he’s great. Beautiful harmonic changes and voicings in his intro sections.

You haven’t? Didn’t he do his own accompaniment on “Takin; It to the Streets” back in ‘78?

Not to mention “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” 4 years later.

I was already a fan of his electric-piano work, is what I’m saying 😇

Northern Lights?

Yep. Both Mpls & StP stores.

Also Oarfolkjokeopus, The Electric Fetus, and Let It Be Records in Mpls, Cheapo (where Grant Hart and Bob Mould met each other) and Flip Side in StP. Road Runner was probably around back then too but I discovered it much later. Probably another half-dozen stores I’m forgetting. The record store scene in the Twin Cities is the reason the music scene was so good.

Thanks. We did not get any mailed materials from the Census, so I filled in the “so you did not get any mailed materials” questionnaire from them.

For the “ethnic origin” question, we put in our birth states.

I put in “American Mutt” for myself, “Another Mutt” for my wife and “Ultimate Mutt” for our son.
