From 2003:

As the Homeland Security Department called on Americans to buy duct tape and plastic sheeting to seal windows and doors in the event of a terrorist attack, critics on Wednesday said such precautions would have limited value and likened them to ineffective civil defense measures of the Cold War era.

They also chided the Bush administration for not yet taking more significant actions that, they said, could potentially save many lives if terrorists strike. Those moves would include sending more money to state and local governments for equipment and training needed by fire and police departments that would be the first to respond to a terrorist incident.

Kimball County residents advised to stay at home or monitor for COVID-19 symptoms (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

This afternoon three more people were identified with the virus, bringing the total in Kimball County to six; two men in their sixties and a woman in her forties.

Contact tracing of the three people’s movements is underway.

When the state epidemiologists saw the list of locations in the community from the latest investigation, Engel said they advised: “If you live in Kimball County, you should consider that you are at high risk for exposure already,” she said. “Anyone in Kimball County should be monitoring themselves for symptoms twice a day.”

The recommendation is that residents of Kimball County should check their temperature twice a day and monitor for symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough and sore throat.

If possible, Kimball County residents should stay home.

“Staying at home is the best way to protect yourself,” [Kim] Engel [Panhandle Public Health Director] said.

Kimball County is the southwesternmost county in the Panhandle, bordering on Laramie County in Wyoming, Weld and Logan Counties in Colorado, Banner County to the north (largely empty), and Cheyenne County (includes Sidney).

Other than China, where I strongly suspect a large number of cases were administratively declared closed after some duration, not a lot of places are burning tests on retesting people who have appeared to be recovered. So the closed case reporting is even more fluky and arbitrary than everything else.

There’s some worthwhile science to be done in this space, but I wouldn’t have a problem calling a case closed a month after a positive test if the person is not in the hospital or the ground.

Another Time, Another Virus (Goes to the Western Nebraska Observer, Kimball, Nebr.)

I’m Not Quitting,’ Polio Survivor Shirley Tank Combs Vowed

The front page of the February 20, 1953 issue of the Sidney Telegraph read: “Potter Child Polio Victim”. The article began: “Cheyenne county’s first polio fatality of 1953 was a 14-year-old boy from Potter who, during the first few days of his illness, gave every indication of having the flu which has been so prevalent in this area.”

The disease, which took the life of the 14-year old youth and afflicted many other area residents in a variety of ways, was poliomyelitis. Poliomyelitis, more commonly known as infantile polio was named because it generally attacked young children and youth in their prime. The effects of the disease had a broad range, many people were not even aware that they were infected. They had few if any symptoms, meanwhile they spread the disease. Others suffered paralysis or even death. Individuals, families, and communities across the country had to face and learn to deal with the devastating emotional, physical, social and financial effects of polio.

The Kentucky Derby is going to be cancelled. I had a dream that it would be replaced with a Ben Hur type event. Much more exciting.

I hope and pray that during the presidential debates Biden makes the case for a federal govt. (CDC, FEMA, etc). Let trump try and blame it on the states. I’m sick of these people who don’t get it.

I really hate Jarad. Fucking Ivanka should not be a requirement for deciding what medical equipment states need.

If someone offered me a million dollars to set in the same room as trump and not call him an idiot I would fail.

Gun Violence is coming. As soon as it happens it will be too soon to talk about.

Trump Administration to Couple: Ditch Adopted Daughter or Risk Exile (Daily Beast)

The cruelty and bigotry of conservatism continues unabated.

Last month when the World Health Organization dubbed the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, State Department officials gave Robin Gallite and her husband Alli, both 41, a choice: Return to the U.S. from Lagos, Nigeria, quickly before the country’s airports closed and the health-care system deteriorated, or stay with their 16-month-old daughter, Nike, and risk getting stuck in the country.

After applying for her adoption in 2018, Robin and Alli took home Adenike-Rae—“Nike” for short—in August from Cross River, a Nigerian state bordering Cameroon. The couple planned to stay with Alli’s family in Lagos for several months while they waited for Nike’s adoption to be finalized by local officials and until they received a U.S. visa for their daughter. They had wanted to spend time with Alli’s family before returning home to the U.S. so Robin could introduce Nike to her own mother. The couple had heard from other parents that obtaining a visa for adopted Nigerian children took months, but they were optimistic about being able to fly back to the U.S. with their daughter in the spring of 2020.

That confidence quickly faded. In February, President Donald Trump placed Nigeria on his travel ban list along with other countries with predominantly large Muslim populations. Weeks later, the coronavirus epidemic ballooned, causing the closure of borders around the world and forcing Americans like Alli and Robin to scramble to find a way out on evacuation flights. The dual events left the couple with a harrowing choice: Even if they were to get on one of the few flights out of Lagos, officials told them that they would not be able to bring their daughter with them.

May Steven Miller burn in hell for all eternity.

If not Steven Miller, I’m sure the GOP has a pool of thousands of other racists and bigots they could employ in his stead.

Amen. And the same is true to the President, his wife, his VP, Ivana’s children, and every member of his cabinet, acting or otherwise.

More Daily Beast: The documents they knew what was going on are starting to come out. Conservatives lie and people die.

Army Warned in Early February That Coronavirus Could Kill 150,000 Americans

An unclassified briefing document on the novel coronavirus prepared on Feb. 3 by U.S. Army-North projected that “between 80,000 and 150,000 could die.” It framed the projection as a “Black Swan” analysis, meaning an outlier event of extreme consequence but often understood as an unlikely one.

In other words, the Army’s projections on Feb. 3 for the worst-case scenario in the coronavirus outbreak are, as of this week, the absolute best-case scenario—if not a miraculous one.

“Everyone wants a hero in a time of crisis. But while Cuomo has certainly been willing to play the part (convincingly enough that a few folks even want him to run for president), what he’s done away from the cameras is telling: using $2/hour prison labor to rebottle hand sanitizer, refusing to release elderly and sick incarcerated persons from Riker’s Island, and slashing Medicaid rather than raising taxes on the 0.01 wealthiest New Yorkers. These aren’t the sorts of measures that would save lives in this crucial moment, and they certainly won’t prevent future crises from happening.”

Back during the IS scare, a man I know swore to me that his friend who lived in TX had SEEN with his OWN EYES that Obama had a huge IS recruiting and training facility. I am sure the Republican Governor of TX was just too blind to see that all going on under his nose.

Here’s an interesting thread about an actor that doesn’t qualify for medical insurance because the requirements for qualification are convoluted:

We could see actors dying from not having health care.

I pointed that out to him, of course. Told him I didn’t believe that for a minute, and that I thought he was a fool to believe that Texas, in west Texas at that, would just let that go on and not say anything. It did slow him down. At least he stopped trying to sell me that particular story.

Remember Robert Hyde? He was the Connecticut contractor, congressional candidate and Trump mega-fan who somehow found his way into the Trump/Ukraine scandal. He was the guy updating Lev Parnas on the team he purportedly had surveilling US Ambassador Maria Yovanovich in Kyiv, Ukraine. Seems like a lifetime ago, right?

Well, he’s back. And he’s sitting on a stockpile of n95 masks. Or so he claims. This morning we saw this tweet in which Hyde announced he has ten million N95 and KN95 masks available for delivery, apparently through Finley Hyde & Associates, LLC the lobbying firm he established to provide access to Trump world power-brokers.

When Josh Kovensky contacted Hyde to ask how he got the masks and how much he was selling them for the story changed. Hyde said he doesn’t actually have any masks but seems to be trying to set up as a middleman. “We don’t have them. Sourcing agents contacted us and we’ve been paying them up with hospitals etc” and then “I help locate to get into our country to help save lives of our loved ones on the front lines.”

When Kovensky pointed out that this seemed to contradict his public claims, Hyde responded negatively: “What’s it contradict? That we sourced them to America and frontline loved ones. Are you on crack? Go help people. They are dying.”

That’s because he is performing for one man, and it has nothing to do with the country at large.

Now, just work in some mushroom soup and you will have a near-perfect 50s magazine recipe.

Not a lot of faith in Esper. Well, you hire a Raytheon lobbyist to be Defense Secretary, combined with “the buck stops somewhere over there” when any conservative anywhere is in charge, and that’s what you get.
