I don’t understand why they don’t use the power of inherent contempt.

If a conservative official blows off Congress, send the Federal Marshal Service after them and jail their butt until they appear.

This is Donny’s “very fine people” bit, that backtracking whenever he feels he’s been forced into taking an action he doesn’t agree with personally. He’s desperately seeking out something, anything, to use as an excuse to go back to his original Easter “reopen” date.

Trump sees the fed/state relationship much like he does the US/allies relationship: As a protection racket. He views everything as a transaction, with praise and “favors” being just as valuable as cash. By the same measure, the most “debt” you accrue with him, the bigger the “payment” he expects in return. At this point, I doubt an announcement from the NY AG that they’re dropping all investigations into the Trump Org would be enough in Donny’s mind. He’d still expect Cuomo to deliver more, up to and include NY’s EC votes in November, before he’d forgive what he sees as “nastiness” towards him.

Just some advice from a psychiatrist I read, (I’m paraphrasing here,)

“I try to keep my patients mindful of now. Right now, your family is safe. Right now, you have a home. Right now, you have the necessities of life.”

It’s good to prepare for the future, but don’t obsess about it.

For several days GoFundMe halted distributions from the fund because they didn’t know what a Wonkette was or why it would raise money. That has been cleared up.

Side hustle? That phrase is normally used by hunbots (multi-level marketing people, almost always women, trying to recruit new “distributors”).

Same here with my supposed lack of drive. It doesn’t matter what I learned in avionics I can’t use (it’s illegal for me), my licenses are useless for maritime electronics (no one in maritime businesses will hire someone with epilepsy), &c.

I got the same sort of comments when I was homeless. Lazy, &c.

Pro-tip for either disabled people or homeless people. You don’t have to like them. You don’t even have to support them. But you don’t have to offer up your opinion on why they are “failing” or how they are an “inspiration” (I hate that one too).

China is definitely not having a good year…..

China has confirmed two cases of African swine fever in northwestern Gansu province, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said on Thursday.

One outbreak occurred in a co-operative that had bought piglets from another province, while the second case was detected in a truck transporting piglets from elsewhere.

Swine fever has already decimated China’s huge hog herd and continues to spread, posing high risks for farms that are urgently trying to restock farms with young pigs.

reuters.com

African Swine Fever (ASF) does not cause human disease, unlike COVID-19. However, ASF is a viral hemorrhagic disease that is uniformly deadly to pigs.

From what I’ve read in the past, ASF has been a serious problem in China (domestic and wild pigs) and Europe (wild boar population) for several years. It’s spreading throughout Asia - slowly - despite attempts to contain it. AFAIK, it’s not in the America’s, at least not yet.

There is an experimental European ASF vaccine being tested that, so far, has not killed the pigs it’s been administered to, unlike previous ASF vaccine ‘prototypes.’ We’ll know in six months or so if it’s effective, but people are hopeful.

European pig farmers are justifiably freaking out that ASF will get into the EU’s domestic production, which could devastate European pork production and bear in mind that pork is essentially a dietary staple in many parts of Europe, much like it is in China. I think there’s been some culling of wild boar herds in Europe to prevent an ASF outbreak from entering domestic pig farms.

It is worth noting that at this point, Italy had been progressively shutting down for a while, and it took them 5 days to double from 3k to 6k deaths. Spain roughly the same, just under 5 days. USA did it in just over 3.

Thirty-eight states are currently under stay-at-home orders.

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) contacted Governor Pete Ricketts (R-Nebr.) to urge him to do the same.

Gov. Ricketts declined, saying he would stick with the Directed Health Measures (closing individual areas as coronavirus infections reach a certain threshold).

Those measures now extend to fifty-six of Nebraska’s ninety-three counties.

Governor Newsom said, “What are you waiting for? … What more evidence do you need? You’ll never regret overcompensating …”

I’m not sorry for calling them chowderheads. They were especially selfish risking the health of over fifty people during a freakin’ epidemic. According to the article, those people who rescued him were the heroes here, not the skiier or his guide.

I guess that means I’ve overstepped my bounds again here.

Colorado is putting up “no parking” signs all over back country roads due to the outbreak, and there are countless people who don’t give a flying fuque about either the law or others they put at risk of disease if they need rescue so they can have a downhill thrill.

How many people were involved in that rescue who had to ignore social distancing rules and Governor Polis’s executive orders to rescue a skiier and a so-called professional guide? (I would argue you are not professional if you ignore the law and put others at risk.)

Yes, I read that he was flown to Grand Junction. The air ambulance service was shut down due to the epidemic, so they had to call around and find someone who could fly a helicopter. He also put the crew of the helicopter at risk of disease.

I’ll catch y’all some other time.

I’m not defending the victim. You’re right, the whole incident put people needlessly at risk. But you’re being very presumptuous of people’s motives in that part of the world. The doctor who treated the victim out in the field went skiing himself in the backcountry the morning of the accident. You don’t have to be sorry for calling them chowderheads, and I don’t have to be sorry in saying you’re kind of a dick for saying that. Whatever, man. You do you.

No you don’t get it. I am being generous with “chowderhead.” I don’t give a damn or a rodent’s behind about their lawbreaking culture putting scores of people at risk then spreading it to others.

You can use that excuse for anyone. You don’t understand the culture of religious people who are gathering in churches and there’s vigorous debate about the ethics of gathering people at a time like this. They are lawbreakers too, and I don’t give a damn about their lawbreaking culture putting others in their communities at risk.

The “ethics of gaming journalism backcountry travel” sounds as if there is a both-siderist argument to be made here. There is not. They are risking other people’s lives. Their bloody skiing can wait. Every single one of them is selfish, all of them. They know they are, and they don’t care.

Again the heroes of this story are those who went out and potentially risked their lives to save them, not the skiier or the unprofessional lawbreaking guide.

I’ll take a commenting break. It angers me when selfish chowderheads violate the law and put scores of people at risk so they can get a cheap thrill.

re: #50 Dr Lizardo

Look like that “rally ‘round the flag” bounce Trump was enjoying is ebbing away. It’ll be interesting to see what polling numbers look like in, let’s say, 30 days from today.

[Embedded content]

It was always inevitable that the “rally” bump would fade for three reasons:

1. The newness of his “change in tone” would wear off as it became obvious that words were not matching deeds. And when I say the “tone,” I’m talking about that sudden change in mid-March from “This is a Dem hoax!” to “This is a war and I’m gonna lead us to victory!” The whole “This is gonna be a bad time” BS from the other day? That was Donny play-acting, a con-man reading the room and changing his approach in order to keep the marks from being turned off. As we’ve seen in the past two days, it didn’t last because it never could.

2. His need for attention turning people off as he kept hijacking the “briefings” and using them as a substitute for the rallies he can’t attend anymore. The idea of holding daily briefings is nothing new and might have actually gotten some brownie points with voters had they stayed the domain of Pence and the other soulless husks. But that was never going to happen, so instead we have Donny out there day after day, what few new bits of info he might have to tell us turned into a 2 hour stream of consciousness that’s just making him look more and more absurd.

3. The “shit got real” effect, which really seemed to start kicking in within the last week or so as the “This is no worse than the flu” bit died an ignoble death in the face of rapidly rising hospitalization and death rates. See, in past epidemics and even the few pandemics, swift government intervention and international cooperation to find and isolate cases meant the media coverage looked like “scaremongering” and people responded negatively. But when you have a federal response that moves with all the speed of a dead dog nailed to an armchair (h/t Yahtzee), an approach to international cooperation that is wrapped around wads of cash, and partisan warfare between the Oval Office and the states, whatever public confidence there was that this would short-lived and minor withered like a slug under a mountain of salt.

Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long for that dead cat bounce to begin fading.

No argument from me on that score. But I guess I’m coming from a much different perspective. Outdoor recreation in the backcountry is a sublime form of social distancing, and the residents of Telluride got after it, there were no doubt hundreds of people skiing in the backcountry the day of the accident. Accidents happen. These guys were experienced and well-equipped. In hindsight it was very stupid and put a lot of people in danger, not so much the rescue operation, those happen all the time in the backcountry, but the virus. This is all something no human has ever experienced save for the really old people who were children in 1918. It was a shitty mistake, but I’m not going to pillory the parties involved because I know deep down the desire to do such things.

Or, I’m talking out of my ass and need to shut the fuck up and we need to put the victim up to a firing squad.

don’t over-strain the arc of this discussion. I do my social distancing in the vineyards, where I would not need an airlift if I sprained an ankle.

People need to think of potential consequences of their actions and not be surprised if there is not someone along to bail them out when they put others unnecessarily at risk.

But you don’t have to offer up your opinion on why they are “failing” or how they are an “inspiration” (I hate that one too).

great. well, I’ve spent my lockdown with the great courses, at ten bucks a month. I’ve learned a little latin, a bit about the divine comedy, and something about the controversy over just how many times human beings crossed the bering strait in migration waves. also, although i still don’t know the theory behind it, I can go up and down a bass guitar in ionian, dorian, mixylodian, locrian, aeolian, and phrygian. Sadly, none of these really help with the side hustle.

China is definitely not having a good year…..

African Swine Fever (ASF) does not cause human disease, unlike COVID-19. YET. COVID 19 didn’t cause human disease, until it did.

re: #71 Targetpractice

1. That change in time lasted minutes.

2. The sad reality is that if this idiot had managed a modicum of humanity, he’d be in the 80’s approval. But he can’t do he’s not.

3. Nothing to add. +100

For the same reason that the Trump administration hasn’t shut down domestic air travel despite having absolutely no screening on either end of the flight (when you embark for your destination, or when you get off the plane). The air travel mode allows covid19 to spread nationwide, and those rich fuckers who take private planes are no different. They’re potential carriers and spreading it to everyone else.

air travel screening is… problematic - you’re really going to want to screen before you get into the airport, and it creates a chokepoint where maintaining social distancing becomes difficult. Maybe you could utilize airport hotels, but smaller airports don’t have those. And with the contagious/asymptomatic phase you can only cut out a percentage of the danger.

I would suggest mandating large bright LED signs at all airport entrances saying “You are likely to get CV19 if you fly”. That would cut travel right down, which really should be the goal.

this is actually great. it means mortality rates are significantly lower than reported. If it turns out that this is twice as deadly as the flu, rather than ten times, that MIGHT mean we can modify our approach down the road to protecting the most vulnerable while allowing, with some due measures of safety, like effective spacing, random spot testing, etc., society and the economy to actually reopen again.

The state level order specifically encourages people to use parks, be outside, get exercise, etc, so long as social distancing is maintained. A back country ski trip checks all those boxes. Would people be freaking out if someone slipped and broke a leg taking a hike at a nearby state park and needed help? Would people suggest that an ambulance not help people that got in an car wreck on C470? Because it is all pretty analogous.

Oh, I probably should bring everyone up to date on my mortgage/surprise foreclosure:

I talked to a representative of Completely Fucking Incompetent Mortgage Company (CFIMC) Wednesday morning. I didn’t cuss them out, but I was extremely pissed off. I let them know they done fucked up. I mean, seriously! They had my cell phone number and at no time did they call me. I have the phone records to prove it. And I know, from working at the evil too big to fail bank, that collectors are standing by on outbound dialers* to talk to you about making a payment if you pick up the phone.

The upshot is they are reworking my account. I told them I would be very happy to ACH (that would be “send funds via the Automated Clearing House” aka electronic funds transfer*) what I owed to them, but, I said, “I don’t think I owe you people anything.” So far I have not received a statement. It appears CFIMC has been fucking over my loan since they assumed it in a fire sale from the previous loan owner on March 16, 2019.

So, for the moment, things appear to be OK. I still think I’m going to file a complaint at the very least with the appropriate agencies in Arizona and North Carolina once this is all over. And, I’m thinking to myself, I can’t even imagine how these companies are fucking over people who don’t have my background in banking and technology. In fact, it’s scaring the shit out of me, to be perfectly honest. Remember, these guys were going to foreclose over $1,069.21, which is 1.3 payments on my house. Who else are they fucking over?

ETA: the person I talked to is working from home, so there is that.

*signaling that I know what the hell I’m talking about.

re: #109 steve_davis

What we need is enough tests to test EVERYONE in medium-sized cities with active outbreaks and the serological (or whatever) tests which let you know who has had it. This will let you get real percentages and CFRs, everything before that is a flat guess.

But the thing is that whatever its true death rate compared to the flu, it’s SPREADING at crazy rates and overwhelming resources, and doing disproportionate damage far above what simple CFR comparisons would indicate.

I haven’t seen a metric I like yet for comparing the impact of contagions - there are a half-dozen variables going around talking about spread speed, fatality rate, growth curves, population immunity and more, but all of them individually are just a slice of the larger shape of things.

I disagree. If you’re walking in a park or in an accident (the PM of NZ advises people to not drive right now), you’re more easily accessible.

Now, you’re in contact with first responders who have been in contact with who knows what… Which is why the PM of NZ suggests not driving for a “get away”. And if you have to go to the hospital? You’re chance of contracting C19 exponentially rises.

And in the back country, rescue may mean helicopters or what have you. More people. More contact.

I get the culture and desire, but sorry, stay at home. Be smart (this ain’t smart). Survive and don’t add additional burden to healthcare facilities.

Crisis of Leadership: Republican Voters Denounce Trump’s Coronavirus Failure
An anti-President Trump group of Republicans released a new ad showing GOP voters across the country attacking the president over his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The video ad, released by Republicans for the Rule of Law on Friday, features GOP voters in critical states in the 2020 presidential election, including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona, criticizing the president.

“Even though I’ve been a Republican all my life, I can’t support Trump, and his response to the coronavirus is exactly why. He told us this infection would just go away, even as it ripped across other countries,” the voters say in the ad.

Look like that “rally ‘round the flag” bounce Trump was enjoying is ebbing away. It’ll be interesting to see what polling numbers look like in, let’s say, 30 days from today.

[Embedded content]

My guess is that they are likely to be exactly the same, with MAYBE a point or two move.
The thing about Trump’s numbers (quite depressing, really) is that they have been bizarrely steady pretty much throughout his Presidency: basically a 45-55 split: he’s never had much of an approval rate (the BS RW hack polls that he loves to crow about aside) much higher, but OTOH, it’s never really been much lower.
How any thinking person could objectively analyze the Trump Administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and judge it anything less than “utter clusterfuck” is beyond me. But then again, I’ve used a term that disgracefully, does not seem to apply much in the Era of Trump: i.e.: “thinking”….

That’s exactly what’s going to happen. There will be firesales on cruises, resorts, and all kinds of hotels nationwide to induce more travel once this settles down.

But we have to get there first.

yes, a lot of people, especially the older retiree clientele, will be a lot more hesitant, so they will have to try to make it more attractive for younger customers

Up until now, every Trump disaster was, for the great majority of his supporters, someone else’s problem. If you have no empathy for others and are extremely self-centered, you didn’t have to care. It was all scoring points, owning the libs, and keeping the brown people and the wimmens down.

So you can do that with COVID until your little circle of friends, your family, or your own precious irreplaceable self becomes suddenly and life-threateningly sick, and you’re thrown to the wolves in an overwhelmed system; then many will wake up. But it won’t happen one minute before that.

this is actually great. it means mortality rates are significantly lower than reported. If it turns out that this is twice as deadly as the flu, rather than ten times, that MIGHT mean we can modify our approach down the road to protecting the most vulnerable while allowing, with some due measures of safety, like effective spacing, random spot testing, etc., society and the economy to actually reopen again.

It’s very unlikely that mortality rates are only twice as deadly as the flu. Look at South Korea, which has first world medicine and did everything right including extensive contact tracing. Its mortality rate is 1.7% (and climbing), where about 3900 of their 10,000 cases are not yet resolved. So, for them, the CFR is 17 x seasonal flu. It will be far worse here.

The 9+% in certain first world countries may reflect under-reporting, as well as overrun health care systems.

because trump is a sociopathic narcissist with no interest in government and no guiding ideology beyond “fame and fortune right this second” and any smart/capable person who might serve this nation during this administration has the self-respect to not prostrate themselves for the sake of this idiot’s ego, so trump had to turn to his idiot unqualified son-in-law to try and run this new family business that is going tits up like every trump family business that wasn’t “put your name on cheap but glitzy apartments and collect as much rent as possible before the creditors we just screwed show up” because the only people that can tolerate him for more than a few hours and that trump trusts to not screw him (since he thinks everyone thinks like him and he’s always looking to get one over) are family who know they are fucked if he fails (not that they think he is failing, because, again, idiots)

Trump’s presidency is an argument for doing away with the electoral college as it exists today. Trump, the Navy, and Sec. Def Esper (and all the temps/actings at the top of the chain of command, are fucked.

This captain saw the chain of command absolutely ignore the health, safety, and welfare of our servicemembers and did what had to be done. He took one for the team, and the team - the Navy servicemembers responded out of love and appreciation.

That’s leadership. That’s how to command respect. The captain’s career may be ended doing the right thing, all while Trumpists are denying and minimizing the crisis.

All the while, Trump’s policies are doing actual damage to our military and our readiness is falling off a cliff - having 2 carriers out of commission due to the outbreak is a huge deal.

We have only a couple deployed at any one time. 11 total including the Ford (CVs, not counting the amphibious strike groups with LHAs). We have essentially 20% of the fleet carriers sidelined thanks to covid19.

How did this happen? Where were the protocols for shore leave cancellations? Quarantines prior to boarding for extended cruises, etc. It’s as though everyone ignored the threat across the Navy.

And all of this starts with Trump.

Stay home. If you need to get out, then go places you won’t need to be transported back from if there is an accident or unforeseen event.

If those commercial real estate holdings are mortgaged (most likely), then the landlord may not be able to afford helping out the tenants. My hunch is we will learn the same thing we should have learned in 2008/2009, “all in this together” ends with the big banks. Instead we let the big banks get bigger and they have no reason to give a fuck about anything other than their bottom lines, still.

I guess maybe Labour did dodge a bullet (of sorts) losing the last election: the Government in charge of the COVID-19 pandemic (whoever they are/were) is going to catch a lot of shit over their response - one can only speculate on how a non-Tory Government might have dealt - but the built-in structures of the British system means that there is not going to be great deal even a HUGELY disgruntled electorate will able to do about it for another five years.

As I said even Trump’s supporters mostly do not like Jared and Ivanka. Fact is this is a natural consequence of just wanting a “straight shooter” who “tells it as it is.” I see the past four years as a huge indictment on the failings of populist governance. This is on Trump and the GOP. Their incompetence, malice aforethought, and greed have resulted in a massive death toll that is growing exponentially on a daily basis. We are seeing cases double every 3 days. Deaths are rising as a trailing indicator.

All of this was avoidable. It was preventable. Trump’s fucking lunacy in thinking ignoring the problem would make it go away. His idiotic belief that not testing and containing it when there were just 15 cases nationwide would make it go to zero.

Instead, we’ve now got 250,000 cases nationwide, 6000+ deaths, and the economy in shambles.

Our enemies and rivals would not have picked a better outcome had they tried to ruin the US. Trump’s actions are indistinguishable from enemy action at this point.

I’ve been pointing that out for weeks. Zero screening on domestic flights. Even less than that on all those charter flights where millionaires fly out of NYC metro to places like CO, WY, ID, in their vain hope of avoiding covid19. Instead, they’re spreading it to places that are least likely to have ICU facilities when the cases inevitably present at the few hospitals that are there.

I rant when I’ve had a bit of whiskey or rum. I give clear eyed and level headed analysis when I’ve had a smoke. I think Trump has no idea how little people want to hear from Jared at all. As I said even Trump’s supporters mostly do not like Jared and Ivanka. Their reasoning is wrong- they see them as liberals rather than what they are- in it for themselves and them only just like Trump himself but they do dislike them. Fact is this is a natural consequence of just wanting a “straight shooter” who “tells it as it is.” I see the past four years as a huge indictment on the failings of populist governance. It’s why I’m not surprised that both Trump and Sanders may leave 2020 discredited politically.

I think you’re basically on-the-mark: except that I think it’s likelier that Trump’s core supporters mainly (only?) want to hear him “tell it as it is” when “as it is” supports, applauds, and reinforces their existing views. Which are mainly based on prejudice.

I suspect some of that landlord stuff goes like this: Restaurant A pays rent to landlord B who is paying on the property loan to bank C.

there’s gonna be a shit-ton of
- restaurant A folds
- commercial landlord b barely hangs on or folds
- bank c forecloses / takes over scads of real-estate-owned

there will be no market to sell it to. even fire sale it. who’s gonna want it and for what?

imo there wont ever be enough new businesses to fill all the existing commercial real estate.

as for new construction. why would anyone build a new mini mall now? this is way worse than 2009 and scads of those malls still have not recovered, let alone filled up.

all that real estate will have to be repurposed somehow.
someone’s got to want to buy it from the bank (with new financing)
to do something with it.
otherwise it’s a worthless, unmarketable asset.

housing real estate is different of course, but it’s also gonna be an upheaval and cascading event when people cant pay their rents.

and what happens after that? real estate tax revenues plummet
muni government budgets get slashed
services cut

the ripples will be…stunning

It’s impossible to know how this would have played out with a competent President. Given the disease is airborne and 80% of cases are mild, it may indeed have spread worldwide despite the best interventions. But the email lady would have had the benefit of the pandemic response team and the embedded expert at the Chinese CDC facility. This disease may have been stopped the same way as SARS, with serious and competent leadership. There is no way to know — but we are living in the worst of possible presidencies in facing this crisis.

Of course, Trump may be getting his advice from his BFF Putin and this is all a ploy to destroy our country.

This is why Trump’s refusal to invoke nationwide shutdown that has consistent rules everywhere has deadly consequences.

It’s why Florida’s limited shutdowns of counties had no effect, because people would congregate next door. It’s why Cuomo’s initial cordon around New Rochelle was insufficient - by the time they acted, it was already outside the cordon, and no testing available to see just how far it’d already gone.

Also: Newsom has inherited a state government well-organized and well-set-up to deal with crises like this: as I see it the (underappreciated) legacy of years of having Jerry Brown as Governor. I’ve always thought Brown’s one major contribution to the future of California was realizing that having the world’s eighth-or-ninth-largest economy meant that the Golden State wasn’t just another “state” but a significant “country” on its own: and ought to be governed that way. And by up-to-date 21st-Century standards: the CA Republicans have never quite got this: hence their current status as most-definitely the minority Party/

I’m just not going to get outraged as the two medical ships are slow to take in patients. One reason is the COVID cases or not thing. The way to get in is through a hospital. So if you get hurt badly in a car crash or home accident paramedics take you to the hospital. you get tested for COVID. If negative paramedics take you to the Mercy.

I bet this gets sorted out pretty fast and those ships will fill fast. Making todays outrage and fingerpointing from the #filmyourhospital conspiracy assholes age quickly and badly.

A thing about all the conservative radio hosts telling people to get back to work is that none of them have what they would themselves would call “real jobs.”

It’s just three hours of “you know what really grinds my gears.”

Their approach is to evoke gut reaction reaction.

That is why I generally ignore broadcast media. Although they are capable of informing us, they generally put information second to simply getting people to react at an emotional level.

Here’s something for your good news file out of Pittsburgh. Source: Newsweek

A potential vaccine for the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 appears to kickstart the immune system of mice.

The PittCoVacc, a patch the size of a fingerprint covered in 400 tiny needles, triggered the creation of antibodies against the new coronavirus in mice, according to the authors of the paper published in the journal EBioMedicine. The antibodies were created “as early as 2 weeks after immunization,” the team based at the University of Pittsburgh wrote.

The authors said “it is still early to predict whether humans immunized with these vaccine candidates will have similar responses” and be protected from the new coronavirus, but their work demonstrates that a vaccine candidate can be quickly created.

Still a ways to go from a viable human vaccine that can be mass produced but an amazing achievement in a relatively short period of time.

It believed that it alone ended the USSR. Democracy did.

The USSR also collapsed under the weight of its own inefficiencies and inherent contradictions.

Namely, Gorbachev toured the west in the 80’s and saw that every small business already had a computer. He knew that the Soviet economy could not compete without them, but computers would end the state’s near-monopoly on the dissemination of information and literature.

So he started perestroika, the reform of the system, and introduced glasnost’, transparency, which led to people seeing clearly that pererstroika was not working because it was being stifled and confounded at every turn by people with a large interest in maintaining the status quo…

Starmer has been described as ‘soft left’.[44][45][46] He supports common ownership and investment in the UK’s public services, including the NHS, as well as the abolition of university tuition fees.[47][48][49] He has called for an increase in income tax for the top 5% of earners and an end to tax avoidance by corporations.[47] He also advocates the reversal of the Conservative Party’s cuts in corporation tax and supported Labour’s anti-austerity proposals under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.[47][48] On social inequality, Starmer proposes “national wellbeing indicators” to measure the country’s performance on health, inequality, homelessness, and the environment.[50] He has also called for an “overhaul” of the UK’s Universal Credit scheme.[51]

In terms of foreign policy, Starmer has advocated for an end to “illegal wars” and a review of the United Kingdom’s arms sales.[47] During his leadership campaign, he pledged to create a “Prevention of Military Intervention Act”, which would only permit lawful military action with the support of the House of Commons.[52][53] Starmer had previously opposed the Iraq War, stating that it was “not lawful under international law because there was no UN resolution expressly authorising it.”[53]

Starmer has been criticised for his opposition to Brexit, with some Labour colleagues citing his support for a second referendum as a reason the party lost the 2019 election.[54] In response, Starmer reiterated his belief in his position.[54]

It really doesn’t. I have had to keep myself from wandering too much into worst case scenario territory. My primary worry has been something happening to someone I love back in Canada and me potentially having to make the trip up there in this craziness…or perhaps having to accept the fact I won’t be able to go at all.

I’ve already lost one friend recently (non Covid19) that I haven’t been able to properly mourn yet.

Fucknut Trump is tweeting…. about a fucking pipeline.

It promised “70,000 jobs” as I recall…temporary, migrant jobs in which hordes of workers descend on small rural communities, create a housing shortage and temporary boom, and then move on…

Cuomo’s performance wasn’t perfect either. Should he have gone big quicker and shut down public gatherings more quickly? Probably. Same with closures and stay-at-home orders. But he was still faster than others, including Trump, who still drags his feet and hasn’t instituted a nationwide standard.

I think we should also see that cross referenced to the response from WA, MA, and CA.

I think Cuomo and others were still somewhat in disbelief stage.

re: #331 Eclectic Cyborg

One really has to take these advances in rodent healthcare with a grain of salt. Yes, I know that’s where the researchers start, and that’s fine, but I know there have been a lot of things tried with cancer that appear to work well in mice, but aren’t useful in humans.

Still, fingers crossed.

The Labour colleagues who suggest his Brexit position as the reason for the loss are as delusional as Bernie Bros — it was the dislike of Jeremy Corbyn that drove their defeat.

Can’t it be both?

Imagine, if you will, 70k humans invading any small town now? Complete devastation, inability to manage sick people. Unreal.

I approve of your usage of “fucknut”. (Link to the first time I heard such a word, in the segment about 9:18 into this video.)

Yeah how did that work out in Williston, ND?

Article is from 2014. By 2018, the fracking craze was over & Williston returned to being a backwater shithole.

Michelle may be right about this but don’t forget she hangs around with outright anti-Semites.
