I had to go to Kroger today. As I was leaving an aisle and another person was entering, I said “would you let me leave the aisle first please?” He muttered “Jesus Christ” like I was a nut. There was also a person hanging around the pharmacy coughing. Never thought grocery shopping would feel like a combat mission.

I would say likely too. I’ve read first hand accounts of the transition- Becoming and both George W and Laura Bush were extremely helpful to the Obamas. Bush while I don’t consider him an intellectual is considerably more intelligent and definitely more well read than Trump.

Bush 43 was really, really awful, on a lot of levels. I started writing a post praising his conduct in comparison with Trump, but he had most of the same dysfunctions in his administration, they just didn’t go as far.

…but yes - in the sphere of general public discourse, he stayed within the lines and was not deliberately transgressive. He genuinely seemed to believe in America, not just himself. And that makes a lot of difference.

What’s truly mind-boggling is the true-believer Berners are absolutely convinced that all these “IF BERNIE LOSES, I’M VOTING FOR TRUMP!!!” tweets is somehow proof that Bernie was the “better” candidate because he attracted “swing voters.” They’re truly deluded enough to believe that these votes would have definitely gone to Bernie in a hypothetical scenario where he won the nomination.

True (I think). In the UK, the public elects the Parliament, and Parliament chooses its Government (and Parliament only has to have new elections if they (i.e. the Majority Party) wants to.)

So given the huge Tory majority, if BoJo croaks, they would probably elect/select a new Party Leader, who would then assume the PM position. I MAY be wrong, but I don’t think the succession of the “Deputy PM” - even when there is one - is automatic.

Trumpers are also pointing to tweet threads by a spy novelist to claim that the models predicting 100-200k deaths were way off and that the lockdowns aren’t necessary.

[Embedded content]

As I said last night, the media push will begin in the next couple of weeks. The seeds are already being planted. Whatever the death total is, we will hear from pundit after pundit saying that it isn’t as bad as some prediction and the idea of taking any precautions will be increasingly mocked and scorned. We will be told every day that the death toll is inaccurate and any reporting of deaths is fake news. Be ready.

The way it’s been working is that when you look at the item, Amazon gives you their worst-case date - as you said, “guaranteed by this date”. When you get a shipping confirmation, that is your actual delivery date, and is likely to be more optimistic than the drop-dead date.

Zoonotic diseases (virus in this case) are animal diseases (viral) that “jump” to humans. This coronavirus come from some animal,; bat, pangolin, sea lion, whatever. Zoonotics are normally vertebrate animal in origin. There is ample evidence that past (e.g., SARS) respiratory viruses are x-Infectious to other animals after infecting humans. This one is unlikely to be different.

Which animals are significant? And why?

I would suggest that any animal that lives in close habitation with humans is a potential reservoir. Specially if they can carry and are asymptomatic. It looks like dogs are not carriers. This is good. Not trying to cause fear of animals, it’s just that humans seem to think we’re special, and we’re not. We are just animals with a big frontal cortex.
