re: #182 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Which animals are significant? And why?

I would suggest that any animal that lives in close habitation with humans is a potential reservoir. Specially if they can carry and are asymptomatic. It looks like dogs are not carriers. This is good. Not trying to cause fear of animals, it’s just that humans seem to think we’re special, and we’re not. We are just animals with a big frontal cortex.

Scoop: Inside the epic White House fight over hydroxychloroquine

To me the revelation is that in the meeting, Kushner is the one able to control Navarro, not Pence.

Axios also wrongly calls Kushner a government official. Kushner is not, holds no government position. He’s a political gadfly, Trump’s eyes and ears into these meetings.

Nothing and no one could make Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne listen to reason.

Louisiana officials pleaded with him to close his church, and he ignored them.

News outlets and social media users held him up as a prime example of religious irresponsibility, and he shrugged.

The sheriff’s office threatened his arrest, then made good on that warning, and still Browne vowed that he’d keep gathering the flock at his Tampa Bay temple.

But suddenly the pigheaded pastor has had a change of heart. Alerted to news reports of his dangerous and possibly costly intransigence, the church’s insurance company canceled his policy. And Browne finally bowed his head and announced that he would close the place down for now (it’s all the result of relentless “religious persecution” and “government tyranny,” he continues to sputter).

Kushner is employed by the office of the President. His is not an appointed to an office that requires approval by the Senate. The office of the President employs people, SES grades probably. This is why the Senate cannot remove Kushner even if they wanted. It’s an executive position, like other non-confirmed executive positions in the government.

People are still pushing the idea that vastly many more people have been infected than have tested positive.

But the data doesn’t support that.

Test data continues to show a fairly steady positive/negative ratio. And it’s been this way for a couple of weeks now.

So if a vastly greater number of people have been infected since mid-march, then the testing should have revealed a significant bump in positives/negatives.

See the Florida data for example, bottom of page 2:

Changes in the positive/negative ratio have not been significant, all the while Florida ramps up the daily testing capability.

We’ll see once we start mass production of the antibody test(s). I’m almost certain you are right and that the “positive/recovered cases” will be fairly close to the count of positive antibodies.

35
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Apr 5, 2020 • 4:31:50pm

And if you want to claim that the vastly greater number of people infected happened in February, that won’t work either.

Because then there should have been more cases needing medical intervention at that time.

But the opposite is true: only the past week have the hospitalizations in this country surged to large numbers. (See again Florida for an example.)

The February infection growth was mostly in Washington state, then California. In both states this has been ascribed to travelers, and perhaps to insufficient care in re-patriating Americans from China.

I’ve been trying to decide how I’ll handle my next trip to the store (still several days from necessity). I don’t have a real mask so I considered wrapping a scarf around my face a few times. This will, of course, look stupid and may not even be effective, but who knows. At any rate, it’s not going to make me feel any better.

41
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Apr 5, 2020 • 4:42:41pm

re: #40 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I don’t even know if I have a scarf - living in San Diego I’ve never needed one here.

Also - effectiveness is a good question. Original requests that people do not use manufactured face masks was a policy decision which I guess was made to keep individuals from hoarding masks and thus making said masks unavailable to the health care providers.

Fears were growing for Boris Johnson during isolation as aides said he ‘looked dreadful’

Boris Johnson “looked dreadful” before being taken to hospital with persistent coronavirus symptoms - 10 days after being diagnosed with the killer bug, his aides said.

Downing Street has confirmed the PM was taken for testing on Sunday night and is understood to still be suffering with a fever.

Covid-19 is said to have hit the 55-year-old “like a sledgehammer” while pregnantFears were growing for Boris Johnson during isolation as aides said he ‘looked dreadful’ fiancee Carrie Symonds, 32, has spent the last week in bed with the virus.

Mr Johnson insisted in recent days he was feeling better, but insiders said the disease “had really slammed him”.

We won’t know the actual rate until we are looking at it in the rear view mirror and can do random statistical samples.

American and our guns:

A Man Killed A Woman And Himself Because He Feared They Had The Coronavirus, Sheriff Says

A 54-year-old Illinois man shot and killed his 59-year-old partner before also killing himself because he thought they’d contracted the coronavirus, authorities said.

The couple was found dead on Thursday, and autopsies later revealed that neither Patrick Jesernik nor Cheryl Schriefer had COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, authorities said.

[…]

“Family arrived on scene and stated that Patrick had been scared that he and Cheryl had contracted the COVID-19 virus, and that Cheryl was tested two days ago,” the sheriff’s office said in the statement. “It was reported that Cheryl was having a hard time breathing. The family stated that to their knowledge, she had not received the test result.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the couple had never previously reported any domestic dispute and had limited contact with the police.

An autopsy report on Friday confirmed that Schriefer’s death was a homicide and Jesernik’s was a suicide. They both tested negative for COVID-19.

Authorities warned of the danger of domestic violence and noted that many courthouses are continuing to process protective orders for victims even as other court functions have shut down.

The Florida data suggests about 88% of the tests are negative, and this has not changed much over two weeks.

If a large share of the general population were infected, these tested-negative people would have in their daily lives come in contact with the infected.

That the tested-negative share is steady tells me that the general population has not seen a giant yet secret surge in infections.

Note on my previous comment: At some point, the pedants will note that the heroics for which the 1st Minnesota lives in military glory occurred on July 2. However, after the severe mauling they received covering for Sickles’s dumbassery, they charged the line again the next day when the Union line was broken by the charge, and in the process, captured the colors of the 28th Virginia - whose flag lies in the basement of the Minnesota State Archives to this day. Virginia asked for it back. We refused. Politely, of course - we’re Minnesotan.

And ironically enough, it was us (the Minnesotans) who were the heroes of the day in the heat of the afternoon on July 3.

I’ve always been more appreciative of the actions on July 1. Arriving at the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on June 30 before the Confederate troops, John Buford set up defensive positions. On the morning of July 1, his men held just long enough for Union reinforcements to arrive. That dragoon action saved the Union.

I honestly was not a big fan of the Avalon Hill game (at least the version I played ) since battles mainly came down to rolling a single D10 I would vote in favor of Civil War Generals by Sierra instead, you can find it (or the sequel which is pretty much the first game and a lot of other stuff as well) for free if you know the right places these days and is a great turn by burn computer game.

Don’t Be Fooled: Trump Is Leading the World Against Coronavirus

The number of known deaths from the virus—for now the only reliable data available—shows a fatality rate of about 7-8 per million people in the United States. That per capita toll is analogous to Germany’s and one of the lowest in the world among larger nations.

Nope. Current fatalities in the US are about 29 out of a million. VDH is intentionally ignoring the realities of pandemics and communicable diseases.

There was a story the other day about Fox, and how they have made it so that they earn $2 per subscriber from most cable companies, where CNN earns about $0.40 and MSNBC earns about $0.33. This is because they use the idea that cable companies are going to drop them to get their viewers to rage at the cable companies. And the point of this is that killing their ad base isn’t going to do much to stop them. We would have to figure out a way to end our subsidizing them at such high rates.

The ship that is worse off than the Grand Princess:

Ruby Princess cruise ship hospital drowning with sick crew

The Ruby Princess has docked at a southern NSW port, carrying “up towards 200” sick crew who have overwhelmed the ship’s struggling mini hospital.

Eleven passengers from the Ruby Princess have died from COVID-19, including a Queensland woman yesterday, and hundreds in NSW have contracted the virus after it docked in Sydney last month.

This morning the hulking white Ruby Princess and its helpless 1040 crew sailed into Port Kembla, 80 kilometres south of Sydney, with NSW Police hoping to send it on to its home port in Bermuda.

It’s another ship-of-the-damned, partly because nations won’t let it empty the passengers and crew somewhere.

And it’s a long ways from Australia to Bermuda. I wonder if the crew can make it.

So on that VDH piece in The National Interest, I submitted this comment:

In which VDH yet again reveals himself to be a reactionary hack.

VDH: “fatality rate of about 7-8 per million people in the United States.”

Which is wrong. Currently (5 April) the fatalities in the US are about 29 out of a million. And if you want to defend VDH, his article was first published on the 4th, just a day prior, but more importantly, VDH is playing ignorant of the nature of communicable diseases - that more people will be infected until a large share of the population is immune. Is VDH so stupid as to not know that new infections (and thus deaths) will occur? Or is VDH just trying to fool the hordes of know-nothings that make up the Trump cult?

It has not been approved by whoever runs that website. I wonder if it ever will be approved.

The DailyFail still un-failing:

Jared Kushner’s ‘ill-conceived’ requests and comments for COVID-19 task force ‘have stolen valuable time from health experts fighting the pandemic’

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner reportedly distracted top health experts in the coronavirus task for with ‘ill-conceived’ questions and comments

Kushner leads the Federal Emergency Management Agency despite no medical or government experience

He ran a parallel COVID-19 team in HHS that resulted in half-formed initiatives at health experts who’re busy with the national response

One idea involved Google creating a national website to direct people with symptoms to testing sights in Walmart parking lots

Sources told WaPo Dr. Fauci is attempting the ‘most ambitious clinical trial ever’ for a COVID-19, but is being sidetracked by Kushner

Kushner has received backlash for his position on the task force, with critics citing lack of experience and nepotism

He’s controversially accused New York of not needing additional ventilators, despite officials claiming supplies will run out by Wednesday

I’ll forgive the Brits for not knowing how the US government works. Kushner does not lead FEMA. Trump has Kushner coordinating (supposedly) FEMA activities with other actors. Again, Kushner is Trump’s spy into various government machinery.

FEMA is now part of DHS. It is headed by Pete Gaynor.

Then the Smithsonian museums in Washington. For some reason we did not do the WH or Capital; time, money, whatever. Still, for my heart at the time, the Air and Space museum were more important anyway as was the trip through Arlington. I think after that summer my parents were surprised when I went army rather than air force at 18 but my color vision was just iffy enough to keep me out of flight and if I can’t be in the plane, the tank was an acceptable option.

NPR is as well - NPR

President Trump doubled down Sunday on the suggestion that people facing the coronavirus should consider taking an anti-malaria drug that has not been proven to be an effective treatment.

In a hastily scheduled news conference with members of his coronavirus task force, Trump repeated a line he has said many times before — “what do you have to lose?” — when detailing that the federal government has stockpiled 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine for potential use to treat the virus. He also suggested doctors take the drug before treating coronavirus patients.
