Quarantined for safety? Or with symptoms? 🤕 hope You’re ok

Quarantined for safety. Both my wife and I have elevated risk factors which would make the disease worse.

We’ve been in the house for about three weeks now. It’s fortunate we like each other. /s

Quick check in. My daughter with the virus went to the emergency care after calling first. An xray showed she was not in danger. Today was day 7 and she feels slightly better. I’m out of panic mode.

Well, Drumpf has lost the narrative. He knows he has no control over the crisis. He is a mouthpiece for an absolute disaster, and he has completely lost control of it. We doubled our deaths in the last four days and Palm Sunday services across the south will result in a huge bloom of new cases in the next three weeks.

I keep saying this virus is spreading one truck stop at a time, but these preachers and pulpit pimps this Sunday and next Sunday are going to blow it all to hell.

And I’m off for the rack. Sweet scaly dreams.

I really wish the average IQ in this country was over 100, but the fact is that half of our country consists of people with below average intelligence.

We are basically fucked because half of the population will not do what needs to be done to stop the spread of the virus.

Statistics. Can’t argue with them. It’s all in the numbers.

Unfortunately, my friends and family who remain firmly in Trump’s camp all have IQ’s above 100. They are as firmly brainwashed as the characters in The Manchurian Candidate. They believe the lies they are fed by their pastors or by the RW media. They watch this monster perform before them on television and they see someone of strength and determination and good judgement.

My brother repeatedly tells us that our problem is that we are the ones who get information from the wrong sources; no, Trump did not disband the pandemic team; Trump saved untold lives by his January 31 ban on flights; Trump was distracted by the impeachment; and no, Trump did not mock a disabled reporter. He regurgitates every fabrication produced by the Republican hierarchy. Intelligence does not protect you from deceit.

People who have joined cults often need the assistance of deprogrammers to rescue them from their firmly held beliefs. Trumpism is such a cult.

Morans in that thread are still saying things like “well I had what seemed like the flu in December.”

I had the flu in January, which I apparently caught in Chicago. The flu does not cause dry coughing, and the flu’s cough can last for weeks (I’ve only recently gotten over it).

People on ventilators or dying are not doing so because they are panicked.

My wife also takes Metformin. She and I try to stay aware of each other’s drugs and contraindications.

When we lived in Oklahoma, I broke my hand in a fall. The Wichita VA emergency department put it in a cast, and tried to give me Tramadol for the pain (back when the drug company making the drug said it was a non-addictive substitute for opioids—LOL).

Tramadol and Phenobarbital are a lethal combination, which is listed on the drug sheet which comes with Tramadol. The VA at the time did not give out the manufacturers’ drug sheets (they do now).

I wound up with no painkiller at all, since they simply would not fill any other prescription when I complained after I got home. Aspirin was all I had for a broken bone.

{sigh}

I plan on doing a more extensive supply run mid-week and then cooping up for 2-3 weeks. I simply expect the Easter weekend to result in a bunch of non-thinking fools to cross-infect each other and thus make the weeks following that more dangerous.

When certain folks all push the same angle — Trump, Giuliani, Solomon, et al — one may think immediately it’s a scam.

Like the Ukraine quid pro quo scam on which the very same players worked together, singing from the same hymnal.

The scam is more obvious because two of the people involved are promoting a pharmaceutical and they’re not medical doctors — they may be practicing medicine without a license by encouraging the use of a medication which isn’t approved for the use they advocate.

Morning Lizards. Latest numbers from Idaho.

Confirmed Cases: 1101
News Cases: 24
Deaths: 10

For some reason they have quit posting by County data. News media has either chosen NOT to publish that data as well or hasn’t been provided to them. I would like to know why? (ranton)

Last numbers from Twin Falls County. April 3rd 2020 numbers as reported on April 4th.

Confirmed cases: 37
Deaths: 1

Now I’ll try and be fair here and postulate that the reason they quit posting by County numbers is that many Idaho Counties have low to zero confirmed cases and the idiots in said Counties are going “Oh, we don’t have it here” and are NOT practicing Social Distancing or following the Stay At Home order. If that’s the case, then tell us.(/ranton)

Lotto question:

The state lotto is having a special drawing for people who buy multiple state Pick 5 tickets or multi-state (well, there are only two states) 2x2 tickets.

The drawing is your choice of a trip to the Grand Old Opry in Nashville, or a stay in Las Vegas, both of which I believe are shut at the moment.

What does a state lotto do in such a circumstance? I can’t seem to find anything on the Nebraska Lottery site about it. Maybe they’re hoping it will go away?

In the meantime, the state lottery has adjusted the way they pay large claims. All regional offices are closed. The Lincoln and Omaha offices are open but hours are shortened.

Self-Described “Prophet”: Dr. Fauci is a “Big Rat” Sent by Satan to Thwart Trump (Goes to Hemant Mehta’s blog The Friendly Atheist)

Jeremiah Johnson is the wingnut in question. Describing a dream, he said

The President was making an announcement to the United States regarding COVID-19. As he began to encourage the people with a message of hope and promise, suddenly, Dr. Fauci turned into a big rat the size of a human being. Alarmed, I ran to the side of the stage and saw a line of men dressed in fine clothes, many of them not American, who were standing behind the doctor handing him large sums of cash.

God spoke to me immediately in the dream and said, “Even now, there is a plot to turn the President into a political puppet when I have given him a prophetic anointing to decree with authority. The month of April will determine the re-election of Donald Trump as there is a satanic agenda being loosed upon the USA to cripple the economy and turn the people against the President. There are timeframes that will seek to be stretched and moved far beyond My plans”, says the Lord.

Max Boot: “Until now, I have generally been reluctant to label Donald Trump the worst president in U.S. history. As a historian, I know how important it is to allow the passage of time to gain a sense of perspective. Some presidents who seemed awful to contemporaries (Harry S. Truman) or simply lackluster (Dwight D. Eisenhower, George H.W. Bush) look much better in retrospect. Others, such as Thomas Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson, don’t look as good as they once did.”

“So I have written, as I did on March 12, that Trump is the worst president in modern times — not of all time. That left open the possibility that James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, Warren Harding or some other nonentity would be judged more harshly. But in the past month, we have seen enough to take away the qualifier ‘in modern times.’ With his catastrophic mishandling of the coronavirus, Trump has established himself as the worst president in U.S. history

re: #150 I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)

But in the past month, we have seen enough to take away the qualifier ‘in modern times.’ With his catastrophic mishandling of the coronavirus, Trump has established himself as the worst president in U.S. history

Combining a pandemic and a depression, both entirely avoidable, has finally moved Trump past Dubya as worst President, though Trump has always been a worse human being.

Heh. We have three events each year where our clientele is much much more high end than usual. We are the highest end hotel in town but here in the middle of northwoods flyover, that ain’t sayin much. There are some truly luxurious resorts nearby but they charge by the week too ;)

So last summer I was working the front desk when I got a call from a room asking for bed turn down service and warm towels. They were going to start their shower and expected the towels to be there when he got done. I’m still not sure how I avoided laughing but managed to simply say that if we had such personnel available we would not be only charging $159 per night.

Rich guests all too often suck. The only thing worse is a GOP congresscritter and entourage.

Data suggests that some of the worst hit European countries have finally turned the curve, in that new cases and daily deaths have decreased. If this is so, then their own lockdown efforts are working.

However, it should be noted that new cases and deaths are still pretty high. Thus those countries are sticking with lockdowns for now.

But my fear is that Trump and his sycophants will jump and any decrease in US daily numbers as a green light, to push to get rid of our own lockdowns. But that will be disastrous, given how many are still infected and contagious.

In my case, the guest in question is staying in the same room as a woman who’s here on an employee rate who’s been an absolute pain because she keeps extending but keeps getting locked out of her room by us because she doesn’t pay before she leaves for work. He comes down today (first time I’ve seen him come down for breakfast) and asks for cereal and milk. Since our breakfast buffet has been closed for weeks now, I tell him we don’t have those available for guests. That’s when “They” are invoked to tell me he’s been getting this stuff for awhile.

By the way, he also broke out the other two favorites annoyances of service sector employees: “Could you go check (again)?” and “Mind if I take a look?” Yes, I mind and yes I’ve already looked. If you want to accuse me of lying, please say that upfront so I know to tell you how far you can fuck off to.

In 2015, the United Nations University gave Vanuatu the highest natural disaster risk of all the countries it measured.

Vanuatu is composed of several volcanos. But people have to live near the shore. Thus the problem with sea level. And with max waves of cyclone Harold estimated at 45 feet, combined with the surge, there is high risk of destruction.

So many inmates are held there that many sleep on the floor, on plastic cots called “boats.” And it’s so crowded during the day, there’s nowhere to sit down, his fiancée said.

I did a run early yesterday morning. Spent ~$260 and we should be set for a few weeks (depending on how much the son home from college eats). But I would think good enough for 2 weeks of supplies at the least.

More of This, Please: Insurance Company Cancels Policy of Corona-Defiant Church

Nothing and no one could make Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne listen to reason.

Louisiana officials pleaded with him to close his church, and he ignored them.

News outlets and social media users held him up as a prime example of religious irresponsibility, and he shrugged.

The sheriff’s office threatened his arrest, then made good on that warning, and still Browne vowed that he’d keep gathering the flock at his Tampa Bay temple.

But suddenly the pigheaded pastor has had a change of heart. Alerted to news reports of his dangerous and possibly costly intransigence, the church’s insurance company canceled his policy. And Browne finally bowed his head and announced that he would close the place down for now (it’s all the result of relentless “religious persecution” and “government tyranny,” he continues to sputter).

There is no constitutionally directed order of succession in the British government. Part of the problem is that no one has been designated Deputy Prime Minister
UK’s Plan B if ‘Team Johnson’ Is Incapacitated? Answer Is Unclear - via NY Times

The party would elect a replacement. it’s not difficult. Even if there was a Deputy PM - he/she wouldn’t automatically get the job. Would have to be confirmed by a party vote. A PM does not have the power of a President. His power is given to him as the leader of the majority party in the commons (US - the Speaker of the House).

Fascinating: The same Democrats who would dive onto swords to defend a woman’s right to choose to abort her child would hurl her doctor and pharmacist onto swords if she chose HCQ and Zithromax to prevent her death from COVID-19.

This is the ultimate in anti-Trump rage: The president thinks something might heal the sick. But “der Orangienführer” is evil.

Anything Trump likes must be crushed. And if that means Americans die — whatever.

These critics now have been exposed as cruel, heartless, and stupid.

FFS, this is not a matter of The Left vs, Trump, this is medical science vs. aspiration/desperation.

PS no one is stopping any idiot from doing this
That’s what personal responsibility and choice are

Which is all women want wrt abortion/medical services

What everyone’s saying is there’s no generally accepted medical science behind it

re: #160 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Data suggests that some of the worst hit European countries have finally turned the curve, in that new cases and daily deaths have decreased. If this is so, then their own lockdown efforts are working.

However, it should be noted that new cases and deaths are still pretty high. Thus those countries are sticking with lockdowns for now.

But my fear is that Trump and his sycophants will jump and any decrease in US daily numbers as a green light, to push to get rid of our own lockdowns. But that will be disastrous, given how many are still infected and contagious.

Lockdowns, where they exist, are at the state level. Blue state governors won’t be moved, and the reddest have to look at the epidemic in their own states before deciding something like that.

Here is an update on the United Hatzalah leader who saved Z’s life on a flight to Israel 3 years ago. (link goes to Facebook)

The following is an update on the condition of Eli Beer.

Dear Supporters and Friends of United Hatzalah,

Eli, our beloved President and Founder, is currently stable and showing signs of improvement in Miami Hospital. At this time he is still intubated because Eli’s condition was fluctuating over the last week. This is one of the challenges of this illness; it behaves in a very complex and unstable manner.

His lungs have definitely shown signs of getting better. The doctors are optimistic, which is very encouraging.

There is no doubt that all of the merits he is gaining from your good deeds and charity, and of course the prayers from all over the world, is helping him recover. Please G-d, he will be back on his feet very soon!

On behalf of his family, they would like to thank everyone for the tremendous amount of love they have been receiving.

Our volunteers’ continued efforts in these trying times is most unbelievable, and we know Eli will be proud of them when he hears all the incredible work that has been going on in the organization.

Please continue to pray for Eliezer Yehudah Ben Chaya.

Covid19 may also be causing an increase in cardiac events for patients suffering from the disease. It’s attacking heart muscle as well as the lungs.

I kinda wondered about that since the lungs are involved it usually drags the heart along for company. I guess having a mechanical Aortic heart valve might put me at a bit more risk. But having a mechanical heart valve puts me at more risk for so many other things I guess I just need to add that to the list also.

when D’s vote D’s win. Everyone knows it!

Republicans Will Try to Block Vote-by-Mail Nationwide…

…And Are Already Trying in Wisconsin

The reason is clear and Donald Trump foolishly said it out loud last week when commenting on the $2.2-trillion relief bill he signed: “The things they had in there were crazy. They had things, levels of voting that if you’d ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.” Georgia House Speaker David Ralston (R) echoed Trump shortly thereafter when he said that any expansion of absentee voting would be “extremely devastating to Republicans and conservatives in Georgia.” Republicans, including Trump, intuitively understand that if every eligible voter actually voted, Republicans would probably lose at every level, so they try to erect as many barriers to voting as they can. But one of the unwritten rules of the game is that they are not supposed to say this when the mics are switched on.

so they’re using all kinds of weird and convoluted logic about ensuring the integrity, fraud, ids. etc., anything but to have larger numbers vote

a simple, elegant solution is to say fine, we understand these are your objections.
let the vote by mail happen and then it should be easy to see all these things youre worried about. if they prove to be true, separate out those ballots.

never happen, i know. suppressing the vote is a better tactic.

- he took time out from his busy schedule to fire Inspector General Michael Atkinson
- he’s rolling back Obama-era regulations he doesn’t like
- he has also worked to continue the construction of the controversial Keystone pipeline
- he is moving funds around to finance building part of his much-promised wall
- he is also focused on getting tough with China, even to the extent of insisting on calling the coronavirus the “Wuhan virus,” and blaming China for its spread

but the impeachment hearings brought the entire US government to a halt.

So Germany just passed 100K confirmed cases and 1,500 fatalities.

Good news is that around 36K have already recovered (including a translator colleague from Berlin) and the rate of doubling has decreased to 10 days, which shows that public restrictions are working without a complete lockdown.

Also suggests that those of us who were harder-hit might be able to put together a modified regimen once we’ve finished flattening that damned curve.

As noted in the article, it’s not clear that the heart issues aren’t “collateral damage,” the heart overstrained by trying to pump blood through the mess that was once a healthy lung.

Idaho (a deeeeeep red State) must be an outlier then. One of the things our transphobic Governor has done is issue a proclamation basically mandating absentee (mail in) ballots for the Primary. Now whether this will carry over to the general has yet to be determined. We also have online voter registration for those with State issued D.L. or I.D. card..

Massive social upheaval may benefit the wealthy in the short term, as they scrabble for more control and use their resources to grab a bigger share of the pie. But in the end, these aren’t the job creators. They’re not the essentials. Massive social upheaval, if big enough, leads to a realignment, just as it did after the Black Death and Great Depression. That realignment is something they very much do not want to happen, and there will be a lot of pain in the future, but there is a chance for something better on the other side of that pain.

Trump vs. Biden on coronavirus: The timeline is utterly damning
washingtonpost.com
Obviously one cannot know how successfully a President Biden would have managed this crisis. But it has become inescapably obvious that under a different president, things probably would look rather different right now.

One shudders to think how many lives that might have saved, and how many will now be lost.

The worst president. Ever.
washingtonpost.com
This fiasco is so monumental that it makes our recent failed presidents — George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter — Mount Rushmore material by comparison. Trump’s Friday night announcement that he’s firing the intelligence community inspector general who exposed his attempted extortion of Ukraine shows that he combines the ineptitude of a George W. Bush or a Carter with the corruption of Richard Nixon.

Most anti-vaxx people are not against hospitals, doctors, and medication. But that’s all after the fact; they are fine with getting the disease and then the treatment— just not vaccines to prevent the disease in the first place.

This movement could only arise in a world where deadly and disabling diseases such as smallpox and polio had been eliminated due to vaccines. These people never faced such scourges and so blithely can ignore reality.

Although Mary Baker Eddy’s crowd managed it before there were vaccines. But I agree.

OK, this is just fucking spooky: Italy is having to shut down the crematoriums because they are so overloaded

The city of Milan on Thursday shut its main crematorium for the rest of the month to deal with a surge of bodies that have accumulated in the course of the coronavirus pandemic.

Italy’s epicentre of the global outbreak admitted it was experiencing a “constant and progressive increase of the deceased awaiting cremation”.

A statement from the city council said the waiting time at the Crematorio di Lambrate had reached 20 days.

Any longer could cause “hygiene-sanitary problems”, the city council said on its website.

“The large number of victims has meant that Bergamo’s crematorium could not cope on its own,” mayor Giorgio Gori said in a statement to AFP last Thursday.

Just phrase the question as it should be phrased: How much of the 40% of America’s wealth that the 1% owns would they be willing to part with in order to maintain society before they reach the point where they decide to let the rest of us to die rather than part with it any more of it?

One shudders to think how many lives that might have saved, and how many will now be lost.

The worst president. Ever.

Think of Thomas Massie who forced the House to assemble and expose themselves to Covid-19 because he saw this as a opportunity for grandstanding before the American public. In politics, conservatives like Boris Johnson, sociopaths like Trump, and glibertarians like Massie think of themselves as invincible and not subject to the same biological laws that rule the rest of us. Unless they are actually felled by their hubris, they continue to behave without concern for the harm that their actions can cause to others. It was 69 pages. It went step-by-step into how the federal government should respond. It was color-coded, too.

The Trump team didn’t read it.

68 pages too long…

“Where shall he wander, whither shall he ride;
To Canterbury town, to see the child bride.
What shall he bring her, now that day is done?
A gift of gravest chivalry, Fall’s bitter dark plum”

—English verse, 1348, as the Black Death began to hit, and King Edward’s youngest daughter Joanne was sent to Bordeaux for an arranged marriage. Rather than being festive, the city was by that point a necropolis. She died 2 days after arriving.

Re-reading The Great Mortality today, and it’s making me a bit grim.

This is obviously how to win the trust of the crew: ///

The Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly blasted the now ousted commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as “stupid” in an address to the ship’s crew Monday morning, in remarks obtained by CNN.

Modly told the crew that their former commander, Capt. Brett Crozier, was either “too naive or too stupid” to be in command or that he intentionally leaked to the media a memo in which he warned about coronavirus spreading aboard the aircraft carrier and urged action to save his sailors.

The acting secretary accused Crozier of committing a “betrayal” and creating a “big controversy” in Washington by disseminating the warning so widely.

“It was a betrayal. And I can tell you one other thing: because he did that he put it in the public’s forum and it is now a big controversy in Washington, DC,” Modly said, according to a transcript of remarks Modly made to the crew, copies of which have been provided to CNN by multiple Navy officials.

Um, about this—He’s a nice man, erudite about trade in China

As of 2018:

He joined Trump’s campaign team—and then the White House—thanks to his long and colorful history of China bashing. But there have been some serious doubts about his China expertise: The 68-year-old economist doesn’t speak Chinese, nor is he known to have any experience interacting with China’s policymakers. In fact, it doesn’t seem he’s spent much time in China at all…

According to the (Wall Street) Journal, a senior Chinese official said at a closed-door meeting last year that, “We’ll not engage with Navarro.” It’s no surprise, given Navarro’s extreme criticism of China’s economic model, best captured by his 2011 book Death by China. In it, Narravo blames China for pretty much everything, from pollution to currency manipulation to American job losses.

I suspect that UBI is going to be the wave of the future. In part because we are going to have continued automation and expanding AI, making a lot of jobs obsolete. In part because we may well be looking at a world wide depression if this pandemic lasts until the summer and putting money in people’s pockets is a good way to get out of a depression (historically, the other choice tends to be war, and that’s never a good answer).

He’s *obsessed* with China. I heard him speak at an industrial security conference several years ago and it was an hour and a half bash-fest on China, and why Bill Clinton screwed us all by giving China most favored nation status.

There is a mountain of legitimate issues with China’s government and it’s policies, and it’s worthy of some strong words and actions, but this guy was over the top. I’m only of slightly less negative opinion with the CCP than I am with Vladimir Putin and the talk made me feel uncomfortable. The kind of uncomfortable feeling of when something you think is reasonable at first starts to get racist-adjacent really fast.

It doesn’t surprise me that he was at least partially talking out of his ass.

when the UBI concept was first introduced and discussed 50 years ago, automation/AI/income inequality weren’t any part of anybody’s thinking.

It was to eliminate any need for food stamps, disability and unemployment benefits, minimum wage, and the entire bureaucracies that verify eligibility and process claims.
