When I first watched this video yesterday I kept thinking. “Graham Ledger… I know that name from somewhere.”

It bothered me enough to do some research on it and it turns out he was a news anchor here in San Diego on the CBS affiliate (KFMB Channel 8) for like 2 decades. I don’t remember of him being blatantly crazy or dumb back then.

This also led me to find out this OAN Network is based here. I’m disturbed.

Who is going to be the first state legislator to suggest that their state legislature just appoint electors instead of having a presidential election? Not that it would stop the down ballot races… but you have to figure someone is going to suggest it.

Modly was someone who had real experience and credentials for his post. It is sad to see how this administrations corrupts everything it touches; anyone who serves the unprincipled monster who leads it becomes unprincipled, vicious, and dishonest in turn. I don’t know how Fauci can survive his tenure here, given what he is subjected to on a daily basis. ETTD

According to Wikipedia, OANN’s parent company is Herring Networks. The CEO of Herring Networks is Robert Herring, who does in fact live in San Diego.

Then there’s this:

In March 2005, Herring offered $1 million to Terri Schiavo’s husband Michael Schiavo to release all guardianship rights to her parents so that they could keep her alive on a feeding tube.

I don’t think so. He’s so easily played by those who are currently enabling him. They are only putting up with him to enrich themselves as much as possible while they can. IF, not when, IF he loses reelection, they will drop him faster that a radioactive turd and try to get as far away from him (and his family) as they can. Those who can’t get away, will turn on him in a heart beat to save their own corrupt asses.

Then again, they may actually be that stupid and as such, will burn with him when he inevitably fails.

bottom line is there no viable way - by enlisting governors, or state legislators or in any other way that the numbers could work in his favor

Not surprising. The only reason Boris was taken to the hospital was that his condition had significantly deteriorated. Let’s hope his fiancee doesn’t require this level of treatment — that her case is mild and she recovers quickly.

41
Alephnaught  Apr 6, 2020 • 12:27:17pm

The reporting, or at least the party line, is that Boris has been taken to intensive care as a precaution, just in case he needs to go on ventilation. But his symptoms have worsened. Dominic Rabb is going to be deputising for him. (Which he pretty much has been doing for the past week and a half.)

Maybe in the current climate, but overall that’s not necessarily so. People go to ICUs all the time that don’t need it, especially a surgical ICU, where they might be observed overnight after a long case to ensure that they don’t have a problem. Right now ICU beds are at a premium, but in better times ICUs are often used for someone who you want to be looked at more frequently than every 4-8 hours or so, just in case, because a standard nursing floor doesn’t have the staff to check more often than that. Most of them do fine.

So the new IHME model, run on the 5th, has lowered the predicted US deaths by 4 August. The error bars have been tightened a bit too, but still are pretty large:
covid19.healthdata.org

They explain in their release:

New IHME COVID-19 Forecasts Find Lower Hospital Bed Need, Epidemics starting to peak confirm social distancing works

Updated COVID-19 estimates find that need for hospital beds, ICU beds, and ventilators needed to deal with the COVID-19 epidemic are less than previously estimated.

The revised forecasts reflect “a massive infusion of new data,” said Dr. Christopher Murray, Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine. New data on COVID-19 health service use from multiple US states, including New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Florida, and California, has led to revisions down in estimated need to deal with the pandemic.

In addition, estimation of the likely peak of the epidemic in each state has been strengthened by epidemics peaking after social distancing in seven more locations internationally.

Murray noted that for patients who do not require ICU services, their length of stay has gone down, but for those who need ICU services, the length of stay has increased. Estimated demand for ICU beds and ventilators is also influenced by the longer length of stay for patients who survive. Lower numbers of required hospital beds may also reflect triage practices in over-stretched hospital systems, such as New York’s, where some moderately ill patients cannot be admitted because of demand for hospital beds.

[…]

Murray, however, cautioned that, “As we noted previously, the trajectory of the pandemic will change - and dramatically for the worse - if people ease up on social distancing or relax with other precautions. Our projections are strengthened by the new downturns in more regions. This is evidence that social distancing is crucial. Our forecasts assume that social distancing remains in place until the end of May.”

[…]

“Our estimates assume statewide social distancing measures are continuing in states where they have already been enacted, and for those states without such measures in place, it is assumed they will be will be in place within seven days,” Murray said. “If social distancing measures are relaxed or not implemented, the US will see greater death tolls, the death peak will be later, the burden on hospitals will be much greater, and the economic costs will continue to grow.”

But there is a hope I have: this pandemic will annihlate ignorance in many ways. The ‘body’ of evidence will grow and the ignorant will be painted into an intellectual corner, made all the more difficult by the speed at which the pandemic operates.

And some of these people will die.

Yep. Back in 2007, after open heart surgery, I was placed in an ICU for maybe about 2 days. Total time in hospital was 10 days.

One of the things they talked about on the PBS show about the 1918 flu is that some people would show symptoms, go to the doctor, and die within 12 hours, before the doctor had time to even do anything. It would be better to be proactive if you reach a certain stage than to hope it won’t get worse.

Reading that article, it also reminded me of films from that era with just those kind of white working-class characters - films like Joe (the 1970 film with Peter Boyle) and of course, TV’s All In The Family, Archie Bunker virtually being a personification of such sentiments.

Those toxic sentiments have never left white working-class America.

What made the Archie Bunker character work was not only Carroll O’Conner’s superb portrayal, but that as the series progressed, we saw that Archie’s bigotry stemmed more from ignorance than outright malice. His character was capable of personal growth and change, albeit rather slow - and sometimes reluctant - change.

It also helps that the series was based a long running UK TV sitcom “Till Death Do Us Part”, starting in 1965, in which the equivalent of Archie Bunker was Alf Garnett, and the show’s writer Johnny Speight, a working class Socialist in the old 1960s UK sense, made sure that although the focus of the show was essentially taking the piss out of Alf Garnett’s prejudices, every effort was made to portray Garnett as a real working class man, as an actual person, not a fictional bigot cliche. Warren Mitchell’s portrayal of Garnett certainly helped in this, although, as in the US equivalent, a lot of people who were watching didn’t actually get that this show was taking the piss out of prejudice: they were laughing with Alf Garnett, not at him.

This really annoyed the writer, and he tried to chuck in various indications that this show is actually really quite left-wing. The epitome of this is when the show was revived in the late 1980s, and Alf Garnett was dependant on a care worker coming round to their house, and that care worker just happened to be a very camp gay person of colour. And still, people didn’t get it…

There’s a reason that it takes months or years for the FDA to approve a drug/procedure for usage, and it’s not because (as wingnuts currently believe) they want to hurt Donny’s approval polls. Untested drugs have the potential for all sorts of side-effects while totally failing to live up to the promises/expectations of the manufacturers. Procedures that haven’t been rigorously tested may maim or kill patients needlessly for no appreciable gain.

We don’t go chasing down blind alleys in the hopes that we’ll stumble across a cure-all, since most civilized nations decided ages ago that human experimentation for the sake of experimenting is not something they wish to be associated with.

We don’t go chasing down blind alleys in the hopes that we’ll stumble across a cure-all, since most civilized nations decided ages ago that human experimentation for the sake of experimenting is not something they wish to be associated with.

theres 330m people in the US alone
all shapes, sizes, genders, ages, climates, with allergies, sensitivities etc
who already take medications and have other health conditions

NO drug works the same on everyone for those and hundreds of other reasons

from testing derives a measure of predictability

This is reminiscent when HIV began getting press in the 1980’s: all sorts of drugs used for entirely different and some HIV-specific purposes (cyclosporine for transplant patients, HPA-23, a weird-ass antimony/tungsten-based pharmaceutical that failed spectacularly developed by the Nobel winning virologist Luc
Montagnier ) were tried until a failed cancer drug, ziduovine, actually showed effectiveness and got approved as Zithromax.

I don’t know how to fell about this. Wasn’t Boris shaking hands when people told him not to? Yes, I feel bad for his family, just not him or maybe I should. It’s so hard, I’ve save my hate for trump and kushner.

re: #128 Eclectic Cyborg

I’m sorry, I’m having trouble feeling that bad for Boris Johnson. Yes, it sucks that he’s sick but he willingly and purposefully ignored the experts and continued behaviors that it was well known significantly increase one risks of getting the virus. It’s a classic “you reap what you sow” moment.

Boris has no one to blame for this but himself.

If we all got what we deserved, we’d all be dead. I should have drowned in a quarry when I was a teenager, being stupid. Almost killed another kid jokingly putting him in a stranglehold. If he hadn’t fallen out of my arms, he never would have started breathing again. Just imagine that he’s in ICU, by himself, scared, having somebody tell him that he’s drowning in his own mucus, and that the ventilator hook-up may be the last conscious experience of his life.

Add to the known info (from 3/23:

U.S. regulators have lifted import restrictions on an Indian pharmaceutical company in an effort to increase supplies of a malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a potential coronavirus treatment.

Mumbai-based Ipca Laboratories Ltd. said in a March 21 securities filing that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration “has made exception to the import alert” for three of its facilities, allowing it to supply tablets as well as raw materials for making chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulphate.

Ipca’s shares jumped to touch a record high on March 20 after Trump endorsed the drug the day before

The factories where Ipca makes the medications have been under an import alert from the U.S. regulator since 2015, after inspectors discovered multiple violations of its manufacturing guidelines, including “systemic data manipulation” in tests meant to ensure the drugs’ efficacy and safety.

At one facility in central India, now permitted to ship the main ingredient of the two chloroquine drugs to the U.S., inspectors found raw data and test results were being manipulated so drugs could pass quality-control checks. At another facility where finished tablets are made, inspectors found data meant to decide quality-control tests mysteriously deleted.

The FDA inspected the third Ipca factory again in August and cited “a cascade of failure” regarding quality measures drugmakers are required to take to ensure the safety of their products.

I slipped on an rock on a pool waterfall last Monday and got a nasty deep cut from it on my left leg, as well as a good skid mark up my thigh. It didn’t bleed for about an hour and then I went to a local clinic when it did. I got ten stitches, and was told the lack of bleeding at first was because my body was in shock. Two or three days after I’m in the shower, I noticed a purple like bruise near the base of my foot on the same leg but there’s no pain at all. Until this morning, my leg has been really sore and irritated from it with some swelling at the cut. Is it possible this foot “bruise” is from some lack of circulation from the accident? I get the stitches removed on Wednesday.

And he has a young family. the difference between BJ and tump is that BJ may actually learn from his experience. trump is incapable of learning. the other difference is that boris is getting about the same healthcare as anyone in the UK. I hope he pulls through.

SHE HAD NO FOREBRAIN.

She was as dead as a stump.

Partygoer at Trump National Golf Club dies of coronavirus

A Rancho Palos Verdes resident has died from the coronavirus after contracting it at a birthday party on March 8 at Trump National Golf Club, the city has confirmed.

Robert “Bert” Argo Jr., 75, was an active member of the Rancho Palos Verdes community, according to a recent statement.

“The city extends its deepest condolences to the family,” the statement said. “We ask for their privacy to be respected during this difficult time.”

Argo attended a birthday party for former Mayor Susan Brooks at the Trump golf club, where roughly 16 to 20 others also came down with COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus. Brooks was among those who tested positive and she was briefly hospitalized.

I broke my right foot three weeks ago while walking the dog. She lurched for something and pulled me off the pavement and I not only broke the 5th metatarsal, but twisted the heck out of my ankle. The next day the pain was too intense so I went to Convenient Care. They put a temporary splint on and the next day I went to the orthopedist from whom I got the boot. It was only on the second to third day, with the boot, that my toes turned purple. That was gone in about three days with icing and rest. Today is the first day that I can walk with only a small amount of pain. Tomorrow and beyond! Hope you heal soon.

Grocery store was busier this week than I’ve seen it in a while. Roughly half the folks in there, if not more, wearing masks. Stock levels continue to recover - the frozen veggies were practically back to normal, as was the bottled water. (I picked up a bottle of distilled water for some of the pickling I’ve been playing with.) Only things really still missing were flour and rice and beans - mostly the beans, there are starting to be smatterings of rice. And we were having supply issues when it came to dried beans BEFORE this so… Reusable bags currently not allowed, sigh, so I guess I will have a growing collection of paper bags for the cat to chew on.

New masks from my mother arrived, so I was able to go while looking stylish.

Recycled bags aren’t allowed in my grocery store either, but that’s because the clerks aren’t supposed to touch anything a customer brings in (a Good Thing). So I put my stuff back in my cart after it’s rung up, wheel the cart into the parking lot, and bag it myself there.

Just found that on our governor’s daily update, the wild north country has the lowest infection rate in the country so far, at 17 per 100,000. However, he is far from resting on his laurels - our stay-at-home order expires this coming weekend, and he is busy trying to get the equipment and space we need and figure out how to continue to be safe. He cited some business sectors claiming they can reopen while being socially responsible, and concern over the fair weather bringing crowds to outdoor locations.

On our side of things today, only 17 new cases. Sadly, 3 new deaths, including the first in my age grouping.

I may have spent part of my run this afternoon being angry at people who are agitating against the stay-at-home orders because they are apparently incapable of entertaining themselves without interacting with other humans on a daily basis. I get that I am a) an introvert and b) sharing my home with someone, so that helps mitigate a need for human interaction, but the person in particular who has prompted some of this anger is the sort of person who required the stay-at-home order to not be contributing to the spread. (Read: he was at Tahoe the weekend all the ski resorts shut down - and not to do backcountry skiing.)

Whatever makes the miles go by, I guess.

Far too many Republicans/conservatives/MAGAts are in full-on Christian jihadi mode right now. They’re willing to die for this guy, and take as many people with them as they can. And quite frankly, there’s too many people who still won’t open their eyes to how bad this has gotten.

Paper grocery bags make good packing material for Ebay shipments. Plastic bags are useless for this purpose for the same reason stores like them, near zero volume when flattened or crumpled. The paper bags, otoh, are excellent filler and padding when crumpled. I have been selling on Ebay for 8 years now, 500+ sales, and I have never added to, or even completely used, the single roll of brown wrapping/padding paper I bought when I started. There is always plenty of material from incoming packages and recycled grocery bags.

I’ve been home since March 25th and made my second trip away from the house to go to the grocery store. I wore a simple mask made from a folded bandana and two rubber bands. About half of the customers and all of the store employees were wearing masks. Lots of employees in the store because they’d obviously just gotten a shipment and were restocking like crazy. The toilet paper shelves were full so I bought a 6-roll pack and now I should have enough to make it through the summer. I had $66.20 in cash with me and my groceries came to $65.98. I bought some fancy (but day-old) pastries because tomorrow is my 15th anniversary at my current job. No meetings or any other human contact scheduled.

Recycled bags aren’t allowed in my grocery store either, but that’s because the clerks aren’t supposed to touch anything a customer brings in (a Good Thing). So I put my stuff back in my cart after it’s rung up, wheel the cart into the parking lot, and bag it myself there.

My grocery store still has guys (usually seniors) who bag your groceries and bring them out to your car. I was kind of bummed that I only had 22 cents after I’d paid for the groceries, but I remembered I have a small cash stash in the car so I was able to give him a tip.

YRTC is the Youth Rehabilitation and Training Center in Kearney (in the center of Nebraska)

On Sunday, DHHS’ Epidemiology and YRTC-Kearney staff along with Two Rivers Health Department and the Nebraska National Guard, setup on-site testing for all of YRTC-K residents and staff. After one teammate, who did not return to work after becoming symptomatic, tested positive, a contact investigation commenced. A second teammate was identified as a result of the initial contact investigation.

CEO Dannette Smith said, “We are taking decisive action to coordinate testing to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents and staff. As outlined in our pandemic plan, staff did everything right, those who were symptomatic did not come in to work and immediately reported symptoms to a supervisor, temperature checks of residents and staff began in March and physical visitations were replaced with virtual visits. These steps were key in us immediately identifying potential exposures and mitigating spread. Today, 162 staff were tested with the help of about 25 National Guardsmen. The testing process was very efficient and we appreciate the rapid response from the Guard and Two Rivers.”

———————
UPMC and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Scientists Announce Potential Vaccine

Scientists at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have announced a potential vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus causing the COVID-19 pandemic.

When tested in mice, the vaccine produces antibodies specific to SARS-CoV-2 at quantities thought to be enough to neutralize the virus. This marks the first study on a potential COVID-19 vaccine to be published after a critique from fellow scientists at outside institutions.

The research team calls this vaccine PittCoVacc, short for Pittsburgh Coronavirus Vaccine.

Scientists also use a new approach to deliver the drug, called a microneedle array, to increase potency. This array is a fingertip-sized patch of 400 tiny needles that deliver spike protein pieces into the skin, where the immune reaction is the strongest.

The patch goes on like a Band-Aid®, and the needles, which are made entirely of sugar and protein pieces, simply dissolve into the skin.

On the other side of the coin, we have the largest turnout for a midterm election in history in 2018, because there were a fuquetonne of people who were tired of the graft and corruption. That flipped the House. Imagine if the GOP still controlled it now.

In off-year elections Kentucky’s and Virginia’s governors’ offices flipped (and Virginia flipped its legislature).

We don’t have to flip conservatives; we have to ensure we stay angry at conservative politicians.

Helicopter combat briefing for President Trump:

You see, Mr. President, sir, it’s called a chopper because that’s how we defeated enemy tanks in Vietnam. We would sneak up behind them so they couldn’t see us——not much in the way of windows in those things—-and start knocking chunks off the turret with our rotor blades. Then we would really bear down on them, like a buzz saw from the sky, until the whole thing had been converted to scrap metal. It was the same with trucks on the Ho Chi Minh trail, but much easier. Russian trucks are made mostly from pressed cardboard anyway, so it was buzzzbuzzzbuzzzbuzzittt until the whole convoy was wiped out. This wouldn’t work on bunkers though because they were so low to the ground. For those, we had a grappling hook and some tow rope. We would snag the bunker by the slit in the front, then give our machine all the pitch we had and yank that sucker right out of the ground, to be dropped in the nearest river at our convenience. It was almost called a “chipper” but that sounded too friendly and soft so “chopper” it was.

A family friend is now on a ventilator from covid19. He’s been battling this at home for over a week, was sent to the ER by doctor, who then had him transferred to another hospital where they had beds available. His O2 levels have been okay except they took a dive yesterday, and thankfully they had a ventilator today to put him on to support him.

His wife is a wreck. His kids are young and she’s getting over covid19 too.

And we’ve got Trump trying to micromanage this by counting equipment and gear and not wanting to give anyone too much? Are you fucking kidding me? Gear breaks down. It stays in use for a patient longer. And you have to decide who lives and dies because you don’t have the gear?

This isn’t business sense. It’s depraved indifference to plight of those suffering and dying.

Fuck Trump and his enabling and corrupt GOP. Fuck the GOP dominated court. Fuck McConnell, and the Senate GOP who covered up Trump crimes to stay in power.

This is all on them. All of it.

I’m superfly tnt. I’m the motherfucking guns of the Navarone. This is beyond the pale. This is all on the GOP. All of it.

I am so fucking angry all the time that all of this was avoidable. All of it. The death toll. The hundreds of thousands sickened and wrecked economically with the bills. The economic wreckage. The shutdown that will persist for weeks and months.

And yet there’s fucking GOPers defending Trump reflexively. We have an entire network whose sole purpose is to provide agitprop and misinformation to cover for Trump and the GOP. ~40% of the nation still supports this corrupt and incompetent admin, even as the body count is rising steadily. They keep making excuses for why this isn’t serious. Why we should resume work. That it’s a hoax. They fucking held years of investigations over deaths of 4 people at Benghazi.

10,000+ are now dead. 2500 Benghazis worth of dead Americans. And the GOP is still at it trying to protect Trump or even seeking to investigate Hunter Biden for Ukraine nonsense while Jared/Ivanka/Junior/Eric are making crapton of money all while Trump’s in office and directing business at his companies.

I am so fucking pissed at all of the people who equated Hillary with Trump.
I am so fucking pissed at the people who thought that Hillary’s emails were important, but Trump’s incompetence, misinformation, and sex predations weren’t.

The media still aren’t being held to account, and they still haven’t learned the lessons from 2016 even as they reflexively publish Trump rallies without checking to see if there’s any actual news being broken by them. RBG:

“[Under] this Court’s order, tens of thousands of absentee voters, unlikely to receive their ballots in time to cast them, will be left quite literally without a vote,” she wrote. “This Court’s intervention is thus ill advised, especially so at this late hour.”

She noted that the conservative majority cited concerns about the lower courts intervening in an election so close to the day ballots are cast. But, she pointed out, this unusual step is warranted by a “grave, rapidly developing public health crisis.” And she argued that, even if this point were true, the Supreme Court’s intervention now is “all the more inappropriate.”

“The majority of this Court declares that this case presents a ‘narrow, technical question,’” she continued. “That is wrong. The question here is whether tens of thousands of Wisconsin citizens can vote safely in the midst of a pandemic. Under the District Court’s order, they would be able to do so. Even if they receive their absentee ballot in the days immediately following election day, they could return it. With the majority’s stay in place, that will not be possible. Either they will have to brave the polls, endangering their own and others’ safety. Or they will lose their right to vote, though no fault of their own. That is a matter of utmost importance— to the constitutional rights of Wisconsin’s citizens, the integrity of the State’s election process, and in this most extraordinary time, the health of the Nation.”

Stress relief-Cooking dinner. Smoke some bud and work the recipe.

Thawed a steak. Have shallots, garlic, wine, cast iron skillet. Thinking roast the garlic and shallots, pan sear the steak and put them together in the end. Eat and watch with Rachael Maddow.

Man I need a date night. Probably via Zoom. Have a nice dinner delivered to the wife and myself Friday night. Eat together (sorta) and have some conversation.

Yeah, the Navy’s in complete and total CYA mode because they fired a leader who was doing everything to protect their troops because the chain of command ignored COVID19 as a threat. In the process a carrier task force was sidelined. Mazel Tov. You’ve just helped undermine our readiness because the Navy is following Trump’s directives and not common fucking sense.

As they say, “the fish rots from the head down”. Trump is rotten to the core as are those who still report to him. Anyone with principles in a position of leadership in this administration has long since been fired or resigned. Dr. Fauci may be an exception — but let’s not assume that he will be around much longer.

We’re in Pesach prep. The Mrs is baking - chocolate chip cookies, a chocolate hazelnut torte, and chocolate chip muffins. I’m up tomorrow with a turkey breast and a brisket along with sides.

The turkey will be a citrus ginger sauce.

The brisket is mom’s recipe, which is a rough cut miripoix with tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic, parsley. I’ve made it a couple of times, and now that I have mom’s pot she would make it in, it actually tastes like how she’d make it. It’s weird how that works.

The SCOTUS ruling is just a nice, lovely reminder of how truly fucked we remain. And yet how absolutely dire and necessary it will be to vote in November, because if Trump wins again, if we don’t make a dent in the Senate or keep the House, we will be even more irreparably fucked for at least a generation because the courts will ensure we remain a ‘conservative’ country that sees empathy and fairness as the worst of sins.

Oh, Gosh, We’re Also Running Out Of Drugs Needed To Keep People On Ventilators (Wonkette)

Turns out capitalism is a really crappy way to deliver healthcare.

As we bumble through a worldwide pandemic with the supply chain for medical supplies looking like a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos without enough marbles, it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s not just personal protective equipment and ventilators that could soon be in short supply (goes to Vox). Hospitals all across the country could soon face a shortage of the sedatives, pain medications, and other pharmaceuticals that are necessary to keep people in respiratory distress on ventilators. That could quickly become the next big shortage in this medical crisis, according to experts in the pharma supply chain, and there are a whole bunch of reasons it will be difficult to ramp up production and distribution of the needed meds in time to meet the needs.

So please, look at the kittens and take some deep, regular breaths, because this is some scary stuff.

It is better to stay home. Stay off the roads unless necessary.

Reduce the load. Pressure by example everyone to stay home.

Even if just joy riding, you could have a car wreck or other problem requiring interaction with others or first responders.

Stay home
