Officials confirm 8 more cases of COVID-19 in Panhandle, 1 more in Goshen County (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Almost all are women. All are aged fifties or lower except for one man in his seventies in Scottsbluff who has recovered.

Five of those in Kimball are employees of Kimball Health Services. The first person identified there a couple weeks ago remains hospitalised, a man who travelled to Colorado and picked it up there.

Additionally, they are reducing their reporting to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The MN stay-in-place order expires this Friday and Governor Walz is going to be announcing tomorrow what changes he might make for the next round. It sounds like he’s going to make it less restrictive than it is now and that is a bit disconcerting to me here in the Twin Cities. He wants to make it less of a burden on businesses.

We’ve been doing everything right so far but I’m afraid of false optimism that we’ll continue to do well if people drop their guard. Going to the grocery store will continue to be scary for a long time.

But the bigger question isn’t how long our shutdown will last; it’s what will follow it. In theory, lockdowns of the kind that are now in place in much of the country are designed to contain an outbreak before it gets out of control — this is why China instituted its shutdown in January. But even relatively modest spread of a disease requires more than simple lockdown; it requires an aggressive program to identify those infected, isolate them, and monitor those they may have come into contact with, to be sure those people aren’t themselves spreading the disease. This is the “test and trace” method of pandemic containment; among public-health experts, it is the ideal. But in the U.S., and indeed throughout Europe, as well, the pandemic has progressed much too far for this approach to work. And so — again, in theory — the current lockdowns could provide another opportunity, as well: buying the country time to ramp up a comprehensive testing regimen. We would shelter in place until such a program was ready to go, then reenter “normal” life through that portal of medical surveillance. This program would be a dramatic change to American life — obligatory temperature checks, intrusive testing, and mandatory isolation in quarantine camps for anyone who’d even come into contact with a positive case — but it is the fastest path out of our current predicament. Beyond Twitter, the periodic suggestion from Trump’s executive pals that we should “reopen” the economy, and a few op-ed pages sketching out vague pathways, there is no sign of any real plan to do it at any level of government.

Looking at the local county map of the COVID-19 cases where they have data by townships includes numbers of percentage of pop by township who have caught it.

Townships to the south of me have some of the highest percentages in the county.

And from driving through them often enough I know that they are not densely populated. It’s the home turf of multi-million dollar homes, estates, and people raising horses. Plus a few golf clubs.

You’re only somewhat worse off than us. We have a finished, walk-out basement, but there’s really no part of its underground portion that can be successfully sealed off from the parts with BIIIIG glass doors to the backyard, due in part to the soil being so expansive here that you’d likely have had to pour concrete down to bedrock, with a solid cofferdam surrounding it, to have a house that doesn’t settle more unevenly every month. Thankfully, while we’re theoretically on the plains, we really have more of a montane environment thanks to still being on the Palmer Divide foothills, even though we’re at least 20 miles east from where the Front Range hits the Colorado Piedmont (we’re actually over a thousand feet above Denver, and even with the notable climb from there to Parker Mainstreet, we’re still higher above Parker than the highest natural point in Florida is above sea level).

So tornadoes are slightly less common here than in either Denver or especially the Plains settlements, but if one ever does hit, we’re in real trouble because the vast majority of our glass faces west-southwest. Or IOW, will take a head-on hit from most tornadoes the region sees. Sheltering-in-place in this house really only works in snow, to an extent hail, and disease-outbreak conditions.

Plus we’re one of the few areas between at least here and Wichita that could conceivably have a crown fire, as there’s plenty of near-natural-growth ponderosa pine forest that the roads were cut through half a century ago when the place was platted. Basically, we’re like my sister’s place in Gypsum as far as survivibility goes, with the added hit that tornadoes are much less likely there (though I suppose theoretically the whole mountainside could come down on that town, while we’re basically at the apex of the hill we live on). Doomed-buddies!

Lufthansa announced on Tuesday that it will close its low-cost airline Germanwings. It expects the aviation sector will be crippled for years to come as result of the coronavirus crisis. Lufthansa has already reduced capacity at Munich and Frankfurt airports and is currently only operating forty machines.

In addition to the end of Germanwings, long-haul flights will be drastically reduced for their sister airline Eurowings.

“It will take months for global travel restrictions to be fully lifted and years for global demand for air travel to return to pre-crisis levels,” Lufthansa said.

Germanwings was at the heart of a pay and benefits dispute with Lufthansa, they now have a convenient excuse to shut that down completely.

We live in a sheltered valley that rarely sees extreme weather except for flash flooding. The house has a cellar and a cave (literally) off the laundry room that would probably be the safest spot in the event of anything severe.

Flood threat in the last few places I’ve lived have been low due to being on relatively high ground relative the the streams. Or being 15 stories up when the Schuylkill River decided to overflow its banks now and then in Philadelphia.

Tornado threat is relatively minor here, but doesn’t mean that it can’t happen. Most likely to get damage from a wind or ice storm dropping trees/limbs on things.

* - Road to the east of me (and I expect the apartment buildings on the far side) all culvert under the road. And dump their water out there to run downhill from there. To eventually reach a stream on the far side of the complex across the parking lot and past a few more buildings.

A lot depends on the size of the drainage area for that stream in addition to how close the buildings/houses are to the stream and its flood plain.

Where I am I don’t think that large of an area is being drained - so a blockage would take a while to back up a lot of water, and also the terrain shape would get the water making its own detour fairly quickly. (Perhaps not so good for some places a little further down this stream, or further down at the run/creek this one flows into.)

There are places south of me in a narrower creek valley that are not very far above the creek level. Now a blockage or a serious rainfall in the drainage area would probably threaten them.

Yep.

Periodic thing when I was growing up in northern New York state was one of the local rivers developing ice dams in the winter at one of the bridges across it right outside a village. So the flood plain there got a workout in the spring, initially upstream from the bridge and then downstream once the ice dam broke.

And people near that bridge still insisted on building stuff like above ground pools on the flood plain.

As far back as late November, U.S. intelligence officials were warning that a contagion was sweeping through China’s Wuhan region, changing the patterns of life and business and posing a threat to the population, according to four sources briefed on the secret reporting.

Concerns about what is now known to be the novel coronavirus pandemic were detailed in a November intelligence report by the military’s National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI), according to two officials familiar with the document’s contents.

The report was the result of analysis of wire and computer intercepts, coupled with satellite images. It raised alarms because an out-of-control disease would pose a serious threat to U.S. forces in Asia — forces that depend on the NCMI’s work. And it paints a picture of an American government that could have ramped up mitigation and containment efforts far earlier to prepare for a crisis poised to come home.

“Analysts concluded it could be a cataclysmic event,” one of the sources said of the NCMI’s report. “It was then briefed multiple times to” the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s Joint Staff and the White House.

Interestingly, this report is apparently from late November of last year - which means the NCMI seems to have had some pretty solid intel (SIGINT) as to how bad things were getting in Wuhan….while the local authorities in Wuhan were frantically trying to sweep it under the carpet.

And at any rate, Brighton’s partly in Weld solely because of post-80s sprawl.

I know I shouldn’t be relying on Wikipedia for much, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t steering me wrong when it tells me Brighton is the Adams county seat. Which makes a lot more sense, even if there are definitely larger communities with a major Adams County portion (Thornton, Westminster and Aurora, specifically, but all three span an adjacent county and Aurora’s Adams-County portion really isn’t all that much there there so at least it makes sense not to give the seat to. And Commerce City’s about equal in population but doesn’t have much land not currently under industrial use).

I suppose it’s possible the arrest was in Weld, but Adams is a blue fortress and has been since the 60s, though working-class rather than executive in nature.

Sections of a lot of states are pretty much lily-white. Outside of the larger cities in New York and Pennsylvania you can look at the demographics for the various counties and they’re usually 90+% white and little of it is “Latino white”. It’s simply reflecting the settlement and employment patterns of these area as they developed.

The article states that the vaccines that use weakened/inert viruses to generate antibodies may not be effective, but most vaccines under development are not doing this.

The RFA said 29 of the 45 U.S. ethanol plants that sell carbon dioxide, or CO2, have idled or cut rates. The U.S. ethanol sector is the top supplier of commercial carbon dioxide to the food industry, accounting for around 40% of the market, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

That has put the U.S. meat industry on high-alert. It uses carbon dioxide as a refrigerant and preservative for meat, and also uses the gas to stun animals before slaughter.

How is this possible? It turns out that only about 20% of the WHO budget is funded from the member states. The rest comes from various miscellaneous sources. It’s very hard to get a sane breakdown of the numbers but it is entirely possible that the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation pays a larger part of the WHO budget than the United States does.

Decent public transportation in the trains/buses of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (they changed their name didn’t they?) is one of the things I miss the most from my times in Germany.

I am fortunate to live in a village with a little bakery/shop that sells eggs, milk, cheese and other essentials, and a produce truck that comes by on Saturdays.

I walk the 4 miles to the nearest supermarket once a week or so to get the handful of things I cannot find here (peanut M&Ms, canned tuna, etc.) and then hop the Deutsche Bahn (actually the Regionalbahn) for the one stop back. Nobody is checking tickets and the wagons are generally pretty empty.

Especially since the demand hasn’t yet dropped enough for it to be possible to practice proper social distancing, and without assigned seats for the entire run, you’re just as likely as not to sit where someone was shedding viruses an hour ago anyway. Though I will admit it’d be likely to leave a lot fewer people willing to go and pull their groceries in-person (which I will also admit I prefer doing, because sending an order-puller instead, you have no control over which individual package they grab, nor any way of knowing whether there are products totally out of stock until they tell you 3 to 4 hours after you made a doomed order), since there’s more often than not way too much to carry back home on foot or via a train (or heaven forbid, bus).

I’ve actually argued that this should almost vindicate that public-transport-hostile mindset here instead!

Can’t speak for your area, but in the bay area (where public transportation is good enough that I, at least, don’t feel the need for a car) demand has dropped drastically. I had a reason to use a bus a few days ago — it was almost empty, with the driver separated from the passengers, and no crowding. Also, they’ve cut way down on the schedules because of lack of demand.

It is absolutely usable. I lived most of the 00’s in the massive Rhein/Ruhr metro (by some measures, 4th largest in all of Europe behind on London, Paris and Moscow). I didn’t drive once. Even so, over the course of my years there it got worse. I left at the end of 2008, and in my trips back since it hasn’t improved.

I’ve been applying for jobs since we moved here 6 months ago, and just started getting interviews when OKC shut down 3/13. Now nothing, and no real new prospects.
This week I’ll get my first email marketing campaign out for my freelance work as an editor and website designer, to a target niche via MailChimp. I’ve had some small freelance projects lately, and hoping I’ll be able to find projects helping businesses and non-profits that need to up their online game during the Covid Times.
I haven’t been eligible for unemployment, but should be under the new CARE legislation. (Self-employment counts now, and I was supposed to start with the Census last month but that’s all been put on hold.) BUT everything needs to flow through the state, and OK has an aggressively brutal unemployment web interface, all the offices are closed, and the phone lines are so backed up you can’t even get put on hold.
My first claim, for last week, came back with $0 and no explanation. I just filed for this week, and the best info I can find online says that the federal money and new eligibility guidelines won’t be worked out until mid-April. And I’m not even 100% certain I’m supposed to be applying in OK, because the only work I’ve done in the past 18 months is a 2-month stint with the Census in Washington state last summer.
This is so f’d up - we couldn’t pay rent, we’re struggling to keep enough food in the house for us and my 20 year old stepson who isn’t working either, struggling to keep utilities on, the washer and dryer in the apartment broke last month and won’t be fixed so I have to make trips to a damn laundromat.
This is really starting to damage my calm, and my ability to get in anything like a productive career building headspace. I blame Trump. Rant off, thanks for listening.

It’s a disgrace that they included any guidelines at all. For decades, doctors have used approved drugs for off-label purposes. That isn’t unusual at all. But the CDC should be posting recommendations based only on legitimate studies. What has happened to them? Are they now infested with Trump toadies? Or are they fearful of losing even more staff because of the vengeance of Trump when he is crossed? Who forced them to publish these recommendations in the first place?

Right now, I have the incandescent rage of 1000 suns and the sadness of knowing that an entire political party has completely thrown itself in thrall of a corrupt, amoral, incompetent know nothing whose actions have caused 14,000 deaths.

One of those deaths is a family friend of ours. He was in good health when he contracted covid19. Why he died and his wife recovered is unknown. And it’s scary as fuck.

The GOP and Trump are responsible for his death and all the other covid19 deaths. We know Trump had warnings about this pandemic going back to November 2019, and he did absolutely nothing substantive until March. He did not do a total travel ban anywhere. He didn’t do a nationwide shutdown. He didn’t do any of the things the public health experts pleaded with him to do. He didn’t move heaven and earth to prepare tests and aggressively test around the initial cases here in the US.

And all of that has resulted in 400,000 cases and 14,000 deaths - and it is surely going to keep rising.

Fuck Trump and the GOP. They are doing everything imaginable to try and stay in power, including rat fucking Democratic primaries and voter suppression at the state and federal level. And this is not going to get better. It’s not ending well.

The story of my friend will live on with his family and young children. I am so sad for them, to not have a father to look up to, support them in good and bad, and to watch them grow old, go to college, meet their loves, get married, and have kids of their own.

Supply run completed. Time to hunker down for a few weeks.

Lots of people wearing quite a mix of masks/not quite masks. Not many people wearing gloves. Better selection of goods than last visit, but low amounts or out of some things still. I found everything on my list and have ingredients for chili and pasta sauce batches plus some fruit for the next week or so.

Grocery (Wegmans) had lots of markers showing 6’ separation, reminders to keep distance, and was also using a one-way entrance/exit strategy; e.g. you went in one of the two normal entrances and exited the other side. Also saw a “line starts here” sign which implied that they might also be limiting how many people can be in the store at once.

Saw some standard human obliviousness as well. Couple ahead of me got a cart, got 10’ into the store, and then stopped and had a minute long conversation about who was going to go get what. (In a narrow enough place I couldn’t pass them easily.) Got to the meat aisle to look for ground beef and had to wait 2-3 minutes while a woman picked up and *looked* at every single package of chicken breasts before taking none of them.

Supply run completed. Time to hunker down for a few weeks.

Lots of people wearing quite a mix of masks/not quite masks. Not many people wearing gloves. Better selection of goods than last visit, but low amounts or out of some things still. I found everything on my list and have ingredients for chili and pasta sauce batches plus some fruit for the next week or so.

Grocery (Wegmans) had lots of markers showing 6’ separation, reminders to keep distance, and was also using a one-way entrance/exit strategy; e.g. you went in one of the two normal entrances and exited the other side. Also saw a “line starts here” sign which implied that they might also be limiting how many people can be in the store at once.

Saw some standard human obliviousness as well. Couple ahead of me got a cart, got 10’ into the store, and then stopped and had a minute long conversation about who was going to go get what. (In a narrow enough place I couldn’t pass them easily.) Got to the meat aisle to look for ground beef and had to wait 2-3 minutes while a woman picked up and *looked* at every single package of chicken breasts before taking none of them.

one of his suggestions: dont touch anything until you’re ready to put it in your cart/buy it. it’s a great idea that unfortunately wont help me if 20 people squeezed the avocados before i walked in

It’s sad to lose artists like we have this past week or so. It’s been quite a week. Ellis Marsalis, Bill Withers, now John Prine. It’s easy and also good to cherish their recorded output and to mourn their loss. But even greater is the cause for the celebration of their very existence on earth.
Humble men who created art with empathy and purpose beyond themselves. Musicians everywhere have emulated them for decades. Resulting in exponentially more great music than we would have had if they hadn’t existed.
What would songwriting sound like now and in the future without John Prine and Bill Withers? Jazz without the legacy of Ellis Marsalis’s music and the generations of young jazz musicians he raised up at a time when jazz was dying on the vine?
Artists like them transcend beyond being great musicians and entertainers. Shed a tear but don’t neglect to raise a glass. Because the next time you hear some new music there’s a good chance you’ll still be hearing them.

It’s “not” “profitable” because of a stupid requirement to fund health insurance or pensions 75 years out.

This is also my concern with something like postal banking… at some point in the future the GOP would have control and reorganize it into a government owned corporation and then bitch that it is not turning a profit because they put unreasonable requirements on it that no normal business would have.

Shorter post-mortem on Bernie Sanders: “Don’t get high on your own supply”

After Sanders won big in Nevada he had a golden opportunity to show he could unite the party and take on Trump. But he didn’t budge an inch from his insurgent, doctrinaire democratic socialist stance. When asked about his past comments praising communist dictators, he couldn’t even bring himself to denounce them without caveat and, in the process, demonstrate that he cared more about winning than in freebasing 100 percent pure, uncut Bern.

And if his win in Nevada didn’t convince him to reach out across the party, then neither did his trouncing in South Carolina. On the night that his campaign received one of the biggest rebukes a Democratic frontrunner had been given in a long time, Sanders had the opportunity to speak to the party and the country.

What did he do with that time? He spent umpteen minutes giving pretty much the same stemwinder as always—with a special focus on how he would increase voter turnout in the general election.

There were two problems with this. The first is that it wasn’t what he needed to do in order to broaden his coalition. The second is that it wasn’t true. He hadn’t triggered massive turnout expansions in Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina. In the face of actual election results that disproved their own BS, Bernie and team still believed it. And so the only electability argument he had to make rang hollow to the high information Democratic primary voters who were hopping from candidate to candidate looking for someone who could beat the despised Donald Trump.

In the early ’80s, in Korea, the Army Preventive Medicine Service was responsible for educating the troops and families on precaution for using “host nation” foods. We followed along pretty faithfully until Wife tried doing what they said about the huge beautiful local strawberries. A few minutes of treatment, and we had strawberry/clorox puree.

That’s also where we learned the US Army Veterinary Service had the last word on the safety of commissary meat. And where the kids learned the word “comestible”.

That’s another reason the Repubs dislike it so much where votes are close in elections. They know they will lose or it will expose their shenanigans (thank you spellcheck).
