And they also ignore W’s count. Funny, it’s almost as if something coloured their opinions. Too long for Twitter:

January 22, 2002. Calcutta, India. Gunmen associated with Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami attack the U.S. Consulate. Five people are killed.

June 14, 2002. Karachi, Pakistan. Suicide bomber connected with al Qaeda attacks the U.S. Consulate, killing 12 and injuring 51.

October 12, 2002. Denpasar, Indonesia. U.S. diplomatic offices bombed as part of a string of “Bali Bombings.” No fatalities.

February 28, 2003. Islamabad, Pakistan. Several gunmen fire upon the U.S. Embassy. Two people are killed.

May 12, 2003. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Armed al Qaeda terrorists storm the diplomatic compound, killing 36 people including nine Americans. The assailants committed suicide by detonating a truck bomb.

July 30, 2004. Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A suicide bomber from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan attacks the U.S. Embassy, killing two people.

December 6, 2004. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Al Qaeda terrorists storm the U.S. Consulate and occupy the perimeter wall. Nine people are killed.

March 2, 2006. Karachi, Pakistan again. Suicide bomber attacks the U.S. Consulate killing four people, including U.S. diplomat David Foy who was directly targeted by the attackers. (I wonder if Lindsey Graham or Fox News would even recognize the name “David Foy.” This is the third Karachi terrorist attack in four years on what’s considered American soil.)

September 12, 2006. Damascus, Syria. Four armed gunmen shouting “Allahu akbar” storm the U.S. Embassy using grenades, automatic weapons, a car bomb and a truck bomb. Four people are killed, 13 are wounded.

January 12, 2007. Athens, Greece. Members of a Greek terrorist group called the Revolutionary Struggle fire a rocket-propelled grenade at the U.S. Embassy. No fatalities.

March 18, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Members of the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic Jihad of Yemen fire a mortar at the U.S. Embassy. The shot misses the embassy, but hits nearby school killing two.

July 9, 2008. Istanbul, Turkey. Four armed terrorists attack the U.S. Consulate. Six people are killed.

September 17, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Terrorists dressed as military officials attack the U.S. Embassy with an arsenal of weapons including RPGs and detonate two car bombs. Sixteen people are killed, including an American student and her husband (they had been married for three weeks when the attack occurred). This is the second attack on this embassy in seven months.

HIV and ID Observations
An ongoing dialogue on HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, all matters medical, and some not so medical. A Blog on the New England Journal of Medicine website.

Dear Nation — A Series of Apologies on COVID-19
(What I’m sincerely hoping we’ll be hearing in an upcoming press conference, and soon.)

Worth reading. It ends:

Mostly, I’m sorry for the lies, half-truths, impulsive attacks, and bullying I’ve been responsible for ever since this horrible pandemic spread around the world. At times I confess financial and market forces, along with politics, motivated my actions more than personal and public health. I deeply apologize for that.

Many, including myself, have said we’re at war right now. Indeed, some aspects of this struggle are similar to war, when all a nation’s resources must be mobilized against a common enemy.

But wars pit people against people, so the comparison doesn’t quite fit, especially in a time when human kindness and caring are so important. In the fight against this infection, it isn’t other people who are enemies — it’s the virus.

Let’s work together to fight it.

Thank you.

Officials confirm 8 more cases of COVID-19 in Panhandle, 1 more in Goshen County (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Almost all are women. All are aged fifties or lower except for one man in his seventies in Scottsbluff who has recovered.

Five of those in Kimball are employees of Kimball Health Services. The first person identified there a couple weeks ago remains hospitalised, a man who travelled to Colorado and picked it up there.

Goshen County, Wyoming (bordering Scott’s Bluff, Banner, and Kimball Counties in Nebraska) is not releasing any contact tracing information on where people there might have been exposed.

Additionally, they are reducing their reporting to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Their count has climbed to 3.

Statewide, Wyoming has 210 cases.

But, as Our Favorite President is always ready to tell us, it is just the *best* bucket of piss and shit we could possibly imagine!

I feel so much better that he cares for each and every one of us as we die of a preventable pandemic, which he had every opportunity to slow to a crawl, like Korea, and did absolutely nothing.

He is best The President Evah!

I keep crying over the people we have lost, and tonight it’s Prine, one of the great songwriters we’ve ever produced. Loved him since his first album in ‘72.

The MN stay-in-place order expires this Friday and Governor Walz is going to be announcing tomorrow what changes he might make for the next round. It sounds like he’s going to make it less restrictive than it is now and that is a bit disconcerting to me here in the Twin Cities. He wants to make it less of a burden on businesses.

We’ve been doing everything right so far but I’m afraid of false optimism that we’ll continue to do well if people drop their guard. Going to the grocery store will continue to be scary for a long time.

gocart mozart  Apr 7, 2020 • 9:11:48pm

Sam Stone came home,
To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.
There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don’t stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Sam Stone’s welcome home
Didn’t last too long.
He went to work when he’d spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin’ other peoples’ clothes…
There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don’t stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it’s fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero’s hill.
There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don’t stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

AUSTIN, Texas — When a coronavirus outbreak hit a Texas nursing home, Dr. Robin Armstrong reached for an unproven treatment: the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine.

First, he needed to find a supply. But at a moment when President Donald Trump is heavily promoting the drug, Armstrong is no regular physician. He is a Republican National Committee member and GOP activist in Houston, and after calling Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the Texas chairman of Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016, Armstrong soon had enough doses to begin treating 27 infected residents of The Resort at Texas City.

But the bigger question isn’t how long our shutdown will last; it’s what will follow it. In theory, lockdowns of the kind that are now in place in much of the country are designed to contain an outbreak before it gets out of control — this is why China instituted its shutdown in January. But even relatively modest spread of a disease requires more than simple lockdown; it requires an aggressive program to identify those infected, isolate them, and monitor those they may have come into contact with, to be sure those people aren’t themselves spreading the disease. This is the “test and trace” method of pandemic containment; among public-health experts, it is the ideal. But in the U.S., and indeed throughout Europe, as well, the pandemic has progressed much too far for this approach to work. And so — again, in theory — the current lockdowns could provide another opportunity, as well: buying the country time to ramp up a comprehensive testing regimen. We would shelter in place until such a program was ready to go, then reenter “normal” life through that portal of medical surveillance. This program would be a dramatic change to American life — obligatory temperature checks, intrusive testing, and mandatory isolation in quarantine camps for anyone who’d even come into contact with a positive case — but it is the fastest path out of our current predicament. Beyond Twitter, the periodic suggestion from Trump’s executive pals that we should “reopen” the economy, and a few op-ed pages sketching out vague pathways, there is no sign of any real plan to do it at any level of government.

Looking at the local county map of the COVID-19 cases where they have data by townships includes numbers of percentage of pop by township who have caught it.

Townships to the south of me have some of the highest percentages in the county.

And from driving through them often enough I know that they are not densely populated. It’s the home turf of multi-million dollar homes, estates, and people raising horses. Plus a few golf clubs.

We don’t have a county Website with such data (partly because there are no detected cases in our county, party because our county hasn’t updated its page in years because why bother really if no one here can look at it).

National Weather Service Cheyenne, Wyo.

Greetings! Wednesday, 8 April is Safe Place Selfie Day across the National Weather Service. The goal of this special day is for folks to find a safe space in your house/apartment in the event of severe weather. This space will be where you, your family (and pets) go during severe weather to stay safe. If you want, you can post your safe space on this post if you want to participate in Safe Place Selfie Day. Be thinking about your severe weather actions plan that you would use to keep you and your family (including your four legged members) safe. Ensure your family knows where this safe space is as well when severe weather threatens your area.

Our house really doesn’t have a safe space.

We tried to get a company which sells below-ground tornado shelters to put one in our yard.

These things cost thousands of dollars (extra if you want them wired for telephone and electricity).

Doesn’t matter; no one will come out here to put one in for us.

Fortunately our house withstood a couple tornadoes in the last couple years with relatively minor damage, but they keep hitting it and they’ll be digging us out from under the rubble.

You’re only somewhat worse off than us. We have a finished, walk-out basement, but there’s really no part of its underground portion that can be successfully sealed off from the parts with BIIIIG glass doors to the backyard, due in part to the soil being so expansive here that you’d likely have had to pour concrete down to bedrock, with a solid cofferdam surrounding it, to have a house that doesn’t settle more unevenly every month. Thankfully, while we’re theoretically on the plains, we really have more of a montane environment thanks to still being on the Palmer Divide foothills, even though we’re at least 20 miles east from where the Front Range hits the Colorado Piedmont (we’re actually over a thousand feet above Denver, and even with the notable climb from there to Parker Mainstreet, we’re still higher above Parker than the highest natural point in Florida is above sea level).

So tornadoes are slightly less common here than in either Denver or especially the Plains settlements, but if one ever does hit, we’re in real trouble because the vast majority of our glass faces west-southwest. Or IOW, will take a head-on hit from most tornadoes the region sees. Sheltering-in-place in this house really only works in snow, to an extent hail, and disease-outbreak conditions.

Plus we’re one of the few areas between at least here and Wichita that could conceivably have a crown fire, as there’s plenty of near-natural-growth ponderosa pine forest that the roads were cut through half a century ago when the place was platted. Basically, we’re like my sister’s place in Gypsum as far as survivibility goes, with the added hit that tornadoes are much less likely there (though I suppose theoretically the whole mountainside could come down on that town, while we’re basically at the apex of the hill we live on). Doomed-buddies!

Looks like Germanwings, a budget airline spinoff of Lufthansa, is out of business. Lufthansa is shutting it down.

(Translated from Czech):

Lufthansa announced on Tuesday that it will close its low-cost airline Germanwings. It expects the aviation sector will be crippled for years to come as result of the coronavirus crisis. Lufthansa has already reduced capacity at Munich and Frankfurt airports and is currently only operating forty machines.

In addition to the end of Germanwings, long-haul flights will be drastically reduced for their sister airline Eurowings.

“It will take months for global travel restrictions to be fully lifted and years for global demand for air travel to return to pre-crisis levels,” Lufthansa said.

We live in a sheltered valley that rarely sees extreme weather except for flash flooding. The house has a cellar and a cave (literally) off the laundry room that would probably be the safest spot in the event of anything severe.

The “stream”* that develops between the apartment buildings here is in full run right now. A series of thunderstorms have been moving through since midnight and there are periodic very heavy rain squalls.

Flood threat in the last few places I’ve lived have been low due to being on relatively high ground relative the the streams. Or being 15 stories up when the Schuylkill River decided to overflow its banks now and then in Philadelphia.

Tornado threat is relatively minor here, but doesn’t mean that it can’t happen. Most likely to get damage from a wind or ice storm dropping trees/limbs on things.

* - Road to the east of me (and I expect the apartment buildings on the far side) all culvert under the road. And dump their water out there to run downhill from there. To eventually reach a stream on the far side of the complex across the parking lot and past a few more buildings.

We had a fallen tree block a culvert and flood out several houses down on the creek, to the point that they started to collapse and had to be torn down.

Rainstorms have been growing more local and intense, and if they hit the top of a valley, that can result in intense flash flooding.

A lot depends on the size of the drainage area for that stream in addition to how close the buildings/houses are to the stream and its flood plain.

Where I am I don’t think that large of an area is being drained - so a blockage would take a while to back up a lot of water, and also the terrain shape would get the water making its own detour fairly quickly. (Perhaps not so good for some places a little further down this stream, or further down at the run/creek this one flows into.)

There are places south of me in a narrower creek valley that are not very far above the creek level. Now a blockage or a serious rainfall in the drainage area would probably threaten them.

Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))  Apr 8, 2020 • 1:22:15am

A fallen tree blocked the culvert and even worse, the brush and debris blocked the railing of the bridge across it, turning it into a chest-deep dam that flooded a half-dozen houses and totally wrecked two of them to the point of being irreparable.

Yep.

Periodic thing when I was growing up in northern New York state was one of the local rivers developing ice dams in the winter at one of the bridges across it right outside a village. So the flood plain there got a workout in the spring, initially upstream from the bridge and then downstream once the ice dam broke.

And people near that bridge still insisted on building stuff like above ground pools on the flood plain.

As far back as late November, U.S. intelligence officials were warning that a contagion was sweeping through China’s Wuhan region, changing the patterns of life and business and posing a threat to the population, according to four sources briefed on the secret reporting.

Concerns about what is now known to be the novel coronavirus pandemic were detailed in a November intelligence report by the military’s National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI), according to two officials familiar with the document’s contents.

The report was the result of analysis of wire and computer intercepts, coupled with satellite images. It raised alarms because an out-of-control disease would pose a serious threat to U.S. forces in Asia — forces that depend on the NCMI’s work. And it paints a picture of an American government that could have ramped up mitigation and containment efforts far earlier to prepare for a crisis poised to come home.

“Analysts concluded it could be a cataclysmic event,” one of the sources said of the NCMI’s report. “It was then briefed multiple times to” the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s Joint Staff and the White House.

abcnews.go.com

Alas - if only they’d put in a coloring book format so that Trump could understand it, maybe the US wouldn’t be in the mess it’s in.

Interestingly, this report is apparently from late November of last year - which means the NCMI seems to have had some pretty solid intel (SIGINT) as to how bad things were getting in Wuhan….while the local authorities in Wuhan were frantically trying to sweep it under the carpet.

Weld County, Colorado. Home of wingnut “constitutional sheriff” Sheriff Steve Reams.

Weld County, which exported their burgeoning coronavirus outbreak to our virus-free Wyobraska.

That made me facefault for a second, because I was pretty sure there was no way Brighton would be the Weld County seat. Yes, there are seats in Colorado that aren’t the most populous town, but Greeley is near the centre of Weld County and it’s as large as Bend, Oregon. And at any rate, Brighton’s partly in Weld solely because of post-80s sprawl.

I know I shouldn’t be relying on Wikipedia for much, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t steering me wrong when it tells me Brighton is the Adams county seat. Which makes a lot more sense, even if there are definitely larger communities with a major Adams County portion (Thornton, Westminster and Aurora, specifically, but all three span an adjacent county and Aurora’s Adams-County portion really isn’t all that much there there so at least it makes sense not to give the seat to. And Commerce City’s about equal in population but doesn’t have much land not currently under industrial use).

I suppose it’s possible the arrest was in Weld, but Adams is a blue fortress and has been since the 60s, though working-class rather than executive in nature.
Still won’t doubt for a minute the arrested party was white, though, or Walsh wouldn’t have cared one bit. Besides, about the only PoC that far from Denver are of various Latinx ancestries. Black people don’t tend to go much further north than Thornton, and I’m not sure they even tend to be there (Brighton in particular actually has more First Nations people than Black ones—at 1.47 percent versus UNDER A PERCENT). Though it has gotten up to 40% Latinx, but that includes the white Mexican-Americans as well as the mestizo ones. They could also theoretically have been Asian (about the same percentage as First Nations), but I doubt Walsh would have shown any anger at “Chinese folk” being arrested anymore; I doubt the Right will ever let Asian people have their “model minority” status back, since they appear to be gearing up for actual pogroms against that demo now.

(This has been your “way more than you need to know about how lily-white the entire damn state of CO is, but then again it’s partly that way because the first stationary settlement in its entire territory was AFTER the Mexican War, and the few Southern 59ers rarely brought slaves” update for the day).

Sections of a lot of states are pretty much lily-white. Outside of the larger cities in New York and Pennsylvania you can look at the demographics for the various counties and they’re usually 90+% white and little of it is “Latino white”. It’s simply reflecting the settlement and employment patterns of these area as they developed.

Michigan rate of new infections is slowing down, the doubling days has gone from 3 to roughly over 5.

Soon we will need to discuss how to live after this 1st wave phase. After having tackled the 1st wave China found out that arrivals from outside China were a major source of new infection. So, they implemented a lot of measures including requiring quarantine in a facility that the quarantinee has to pay for.

What are we going to do in the US? If we don’t have a plan we will have an ongoing problem.

Low levels of antibodies could affect herd immunity and vaccine effectiveness.😳#coronavirus scmp.com

Unless they’re skipping key information here, this discussion would seem to be somewhat misleading. Assuming this is true, it doesn’t state that an antibody-producing vaccine won’t work. It would mean that “natural” herd immunity, with no vaccinated population, is less possible, but nobody now is using this as a viable strategy. The article states that the vaccines that use weakened/inert viruses to generate antibodies may not be effective, but most vaccines under development are not doing this.

The article mentions the assumption that there is “natural social distancing in the countryside”, which seems to be bullshit if you think about it for more than a few seconds. It’s not like everyone is out standing in the cornfields a quarter of a mile apart from everyone else. People congregate in homes and stores and work like they do in urban areas, except these places are usually a substantial car drive apart from each other.

Considering the new defection rate for Berners and the fact that Trump might be willing to try to paint this as “a race between rapists”, I hope he’s not right on a Presidential level; on a Senatorial one, the #GovernmentOfPutin would have been better off sabotaging his nomination this spring. CNN rapidly running out of fucks to give with Trump.

Chaos rocks Trump White House on Virus’ most tragic day

The chaos and confusion rocking President Donald Trump’s administration on the most tragic day yet of the coronavirus pandemic was exceptional even by his own standards.

Trump set out Tuesday to cement his image of a wartime leader facing down an “invisible enemy” at a dark moment as the country waits for the virus to peak and with the economy languishing in suspended animation.

“What we have is a plague, and we’re seeing light at the end of the tunnel,” the President said, on a day when a record number of Americans succumbed to the wicked respiratory disease.

But instead of putting minds at rest, Trump’s wild performance instead put on a display many of the personal and political habits that have defined his tumultuous presidency. It was a troubling spectacle coming at such a wrenching chapter of national life, the kind of moment when Presidents are called to provide consistent, level leadership.

[…]

To begin with, Trump sparked concern that he will prevent oversight of the
He also announced he was placing a “very powerful hold” on funding for the World Health Organization, even though it correctly identified the scale of the virus and he didn’t. Then moments later, he insisted he did no such thing.

Adding to the sense of farce, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham was moved out, without ever having given a briefing, on yet another day of staff turmoil. CNN’s KFile reported Tuesday that her replacement, Kayleigh McEnany, recently said that thanks to the President, “we will not see diseases like the coronavirus come here.”

[…]

To top off a disorientating day in the West Wing, the President presided over an unchained news conference in which among other topics, he lashed out at mail-in voting, making claims about fraud that don’t square with the facts, even though he recently cast such a ballot himself. The comment followed extraordinary scenes in Wisconsin, after Republicans blocked the Badger State’s Democratic governor from delaying the state’s primary over concern that voters could infect one another with the novel coronavirus.

Trump’s daily jousts with the media recreate the adversarial dynamic of his 2016 campaign and much of his earlier presidency and invite his supporters to adopt his narrative of events rather than fact-based critiques of his conduct. This has been a successful device in the past to cement the anti-establishment President with his followers.

But a new CNN/SSRS poll Wednesday finds increasing overall concern about Trump’s handling of the coronavirus crisis following an initial spike in his ratings in recent weeks.

A majority of Americans — 55% — now say the federal government has done a poor job preventing the spread of the disease in the United States, up eight points in about a week. And 52% say they disapprove of the way Trump is handling the outbreak. As usual, assessments of Trump break on partisan lines. Some 80% of Republicans say the federal government has done a good job, and Trump’s approval rating is steady at 44%.

His incompetence is literally killing America day by day.

NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) - A slew of U.S. ethanol plants have shut down as fuel demand has collapsed during the coronavirus outbreak, and meatpackers have been hit by a worrying side-effect: less carbon dioxide is now available to chill beef, poultry and pork.

“We’re headed for a train wreck in terms of the CO2 market,” said Geoff Cooper, president of the Renewable Fuels Association industry group. The RFA said 29 of the 45 U.S. ethanol plants that sell carbon dioxide, or CO2, have idled or cut rates. The U.S. ethanol sector is the top supplier of commercial carbon dioxide to the food industry, accounting for around 40% of the market, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

That has put the U.S. meat industry on high-alert. It uses carbon dioxide as a refrigerant and preservative for meat, and also uses the gas to stun animals before slaughter.

The CO2 crunch is the latest supply chain disruption threatening the food industry as it struggles to keep workers on the job during the coronavirus outbreak while meeting rising demand at grocery stores.

By the way, I mentioned this before but the thread died.

The annual budget of the WHO is around 2 billion dollars.

The annual contribution of the US is about 58 million dollars.

How is this possible? It turns out that only about 20% of the WHO budget is funded from the member states. The rest comes from various miscellaneous sources. It’s very hard to get a sane breakdown of the numbers but it is entirely possible that the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation pays a larger part of the WHO budget than the United States does.

This is the US however and as you remember everything is far away and there is no such thing as usable public transportation. So I drive to and from work each night and if I want something to do outside of the house even now I have to drive somewhere.

Decent public transportation in the trains/buses of the Deutsche Bundesbahn (they changed their name didn’t they?) is one of the things I miss the most from my times in Germany.

I am fortunate to live in a village with a little bakery/shop that sells eggs, milk, cheese and other essentials, and a produce truck that comes by on Saturdays.

I walk the 4 miles to the nearest supermarket once a week or so to get the handful of things I cannot find here (peanut M&Ms, canned tuna, etc.) and then hop the Deutsche Bahn (actually the Regionalbahn) for the one stop back. Nobody is checking tickets and the wagons are generally pretty empty.

My way of looking at it is that at this time, “a reliable public transportation system meaning very few own private autos” would be a bad thing. Especially since the demand hasn’t yet dropped enough for it to be possible to practice proper social distancing, and without assigned seats for the entire run, you’re just as likely as not to sit where someone was shedding viruses an hour ago anyway. Though I will admit it’d be likely to leave a lot fewer people willing to go and pull their groceries in-person (which I will also admit I prefer doing, because sending an order-puller instead, you have no control over which individual package they grab, nor any way of knowing whether there are products totally out of stock until they tell you 3 to 4 hours after you made a doomed order), since there’s more often than not way too much to carry back home on foot or via a train (or heaven forbid, bus).

I’ve actually argued that this should almost vindicate that public-transport-hostile mindset here instead!

Let’s be fair here — it’s not Wisconsin that’s corrupt, it’s the GOP nationwide. The Wisconsin GOP could not have succeeded if it weren’t for the Republicans on SCOTUS. And this is nothing new — recall that Bush 43 was elected by the diehard Republicans on SCOTUS also. Modern Republican judges are there to serve their party and not the nation.

Can’t speak for your area, but in the bay area (where public transportation is good enough that I, at least, don’t feel the need for a car) demand has dropped drastically. I had a reason to use a bus a few days ago — it was almost empty, with the driver separated from the passengers, and no crowding. Also, they’ve cut way down on the schedules because of lack of demand.

Short bitch session: Really angry this morning at Republican negligence and buffoonery, as it’s hammering our family finances and we’re struggling just to hang on here in Oklahoma City. My wife teaches for the (closed) OKC public schools, which gives us a baseline small budget and health insurance. I’ve been applying for jobs since we moved here 6 months ago, and just started getting interviews when OKC shut down 3/13. Now nothing, and no real new prospects.
This week I’ll get my first email marketing campaign out for my freelance work as an editor and website designer, to a target niche via MailChimp. I’ve had some small freelance projects lately, and hoping I’ll be able to find projects helping businesses and non-profits that need to up their online game during the Covid Times.
I haven’t been eligible for unemployment, but should be under the new CARE legislation. (Self-employment counts now, and I was supposed to start with the Census last month but that’s all been put on hold.) BUT everything needs to flow through the state, and OK has an aggressively brutal unemployment web interface, all the offices are closed, and the phone lines are so backed up you can’t even get put on hold.
My first claim, for last week, came back with $0 and no explanation. I just filed for this week, and the best info I can find online says that the federal money and new eligibility guidelines won’t be worked out until mid-April. And I’m not even 100% certain I’m supposed to be applying in OK, because the only work I’ve done in the past 18 months is a 2-month stint with the Census in Washington state last summer.
This is so f’d up - we couldn’t pay rent, we’re struggling to keep enough food in the house for us and my 20 year old stepson who isn’t working either, struggling to keep utilities on, the washer and dryer in the apartment broke last month and won’t be fixed so I have to make trips to a damn laundromat.
This is really starting to damage my calm, and my ability to get in anything like a productive career building headspace. I blame Trump. Rant off, thanks for listening.

Why did it go so far downhill since going back to Deutsche Bahn anyway?

It’s not like both sides of the merger weren’t government-run beforehand, although Deutsche Reichsbahn was apparently not nearly so good as the West Germans’ trains were (partly because it was designed to make it inconvenient for any but the Vanguard members to travel)…

At the end of the day, it’s the same dynamic that hurts public transport around the world: lack of investment.

Cut up sweet onions. Heat up oil in pan. Drop and caramelize.
As they come up, slide them to the side and cut your piece of Steak Ummm with scissors into smaller pieces and cook until pink just goes away.
Mix them. Throw cheese of choice on top. Cover with roll, slide spatula under and pick up your almost Philly Cheese Steak.
You MUST have a good roll. No soft hot dog crap. Bit of crust and chewy inside.
Some marinade and salt and pepper and you’re close.
IF your roll is good.

In the bizarre world of QAnon conspiracy theorists, 29-year-old Austin Steinbart was a rising star. A segment of the pro-Trump conspiracy theory group believed he was the mysterious “Q,” the anonymous internet figure whose clues have convinced a portion of the president’s base that Donald Trump is engaged in a shadowy war against pedophile-cannibals in the Democratic Party.

Steinbart—dubbed “Baby Q” by his fans—claimed he could get away with anything because he was a super-spy for Trump. In online arguments, Steinbart insisted he should have been arrested “100 times over” for his actions. And the fact that he hadn’t been arrested for, say, threatening to kill the Queen of Denmark was proof that Trump had given him immunity from prosecution.

“Seems like I should have been ARRESTED by now, eh?” Steinbart tweeted to one of his foes in late March, adding a sarcastic thinking-face emoji.

A few days later, FBI agents arrested him.

The one thing about the timing is that I’m worried the folks trying to blame Biden for the Wisconsin election going on are really going to pitch a fit towards him, rather than Bernie or neither, for not getting this announced before people had to stand out in weather barely-safe-to-DRIVE-in for 4 and 5 hours yesterday.

And I suspect very few will be able to comprehend that even if the arrangement had been concluded before yesterday, we couldn’t have afforded to ask people to stay home because of that damned Supreme Court seat.

Do we need a federal law forbidding general elections from being added to Presidential primaries?

It’s a disgrace that they included any guidelines at all. For decades, doctors have used approved drugs for off-label purposes. That isn’t unusual at all. But the CDC should be posting recommendations based only on legitimate studies. What has happened to them? Are they now infested with Trump toadies? Or are they fearful of losing even more staff because of the vengeance of Trump when he is crossed? Who forced them to publish these recommendations in the first place?

Right now, I have the incandescent rage of 1000 suns and the sadness of knowing that an entire political party has completely thrown itself in thrall of a corrupt, amoral, incompetent know nothing whose actions have caused 14,000 deaths.

One of those deaths is a family friend of ours. He was in good health when he contracted covid19. Why he died and his wife recovered is unknown. And it’s scary as fuck.

The GOP and Trump are responsible for his death and all the other covid19 deaths. We know Trump had warnings about this pandemic going back to November 2019, and he did absolutely nothing substantive until March. He did not do a total travel ban anywhere. He didn’t do a nationwide shutdown. He didn’t do any of the things the public health experts pleaded with him to do. He didn’t move heaven and earth to prepare tests and aggressively test around the initial cases here in the US.

And all of that has resulted in 400,000 cases and 14,000 deaths - and it is surely going to keep rising.

Fuck Trump and the GOP. They are doing everything imaginable to try and stay in power, including rat fucking Democratic primaries and voter suppression at the state and federal level. And this is not going to get better. It’s not ending well.

The story of my friend will live on with his family and young children. I am so sad for them, to not have a father to look up to, support them in good and bad, and to watch them grow old, go to college, meet their loves, get married, and have kids of their own.

Grocery (Wegmans) had lots of markers showing 6’ separation, reminders to keep distance, and was also using a one-way entrance/exit strategy; e.g. you went in one of the two normal entrances and exited the other side. Also saw a “line starts here” sign which implied that they might also be limiting how many people can be in the store at once.

Saw some standard human obliviousness as well. Couple ahead of me got a cart, got 10’ into the store, and then stopped and had a minute long conversation about who was going to go get what. Got to the meat aisle to look for ground beef and had to wait 2-3 minutes while a woman picked up and *looked* at every single package of chicken breasts before taking none of them.

one of his suggestions: dont touch anything until you’re ready to put it in your cart/buy it. it’s a great idea that unfortunately wont help me if 20 people squeezed the avocados before i walked in

From Chad Fisher, trombonist for St. Paul and the Broken Bones:

It’s sad to lose artists like we have this past week or so. It’s been quite a week. Ellis Marsalis, Bill Withers, now John Prine. It’s easy and also good to cherish their recorded output and to mourn their loss. But even greater is the cause for the celebration of their very existence on earth.
Humble men who created art with empathy and purpose beyond themselves. Musicians everywhere have emulated them for decades. Resulting in exponentially more great music than we would have had if they hadn’t existed.
What would songwriting sound like now and in the future without John Prine and Bill Withers? Jazz without the legacy of Ellis Marsalis’s music and the generations of young jazz musicians he raised up at a time when jazz was dying on the vine?
Artists like them transcend beyond being great musicians and entertainers. Shed a tear but don’t neglect to raise a glass. Because the next time you hear some new music there’s a good chance you’ll still be hearing them.

all it means is keeping the daily number of cases at manageable levels for medical providers

it’s still gonna keep spreading

If someone asked me what I thought about the way Trump is handling the response, it wouldn’t sound very coherent because there are so many things to talk about.

Answers I’d give, which probably wouldn’t fit on a poll:

“Piss poorly.”

“It’s a clusterfuck.”

“Utter shitshow.”

It’s “not” “profitable” because of a stupid requirement to fund health insurance or pensions 75 years out.

This is also my concern with something like postal banking… at some point in the future the GOP would have control and reorganize it into a government owned corporation and then bitch that it is not turning a profit because they put unreasonable requirements on it that no normal business would have.

not the merger but the privatization scheme…cutting personnel, basic maintenance, repairs & investments to make it more attractive to potential shareholders…we all know what that can lead to.

Ah. Privatization = “We’re going to steal every penny that we can and destroy the service quality intentionally.”

Shorter post-mortem on Bernie Sanders: “Don’t get high on your own supply”

After Sanders won big in Nevada he had a golden opportunity to show he could unite the party and take on Trump. But he didn’t budge an inch from his insurgent, doctrinaire democratic socialist stance. When asked about his past comments praising communist dictators, he couldn’t even bring himself to denounce them without caveat and, in the process, demonstrate that he cared more about winning than in freebasing 100 percent pure, uncut Bern.

And if his win in Nevada didn’t convince him to reach out across the party, then neither did his trouncing in South Carolina. On the night that his campaign received one of the biggest rebukes a Democratic frontrunner had been given in a long time, Sanders had the opportunity to speak to the party and the country.

What did he do with that time? He spent umpteen minutes giving pretty much the same stemwinder as always—with a special focus on how he would increase voter turnout in the general election.

There were two problems with this. The first is that it wasn’t what he needed to do in order to broaden his coalition. The second is that it wasn’t true. He hadn’t triggered massive turnout expansions in Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina. In the face of actual election results that disproved their own BS, Bernie and team still believed it. And so the only electability argument he had to make rang hollow to the high information Democratic primary voters who were hopping from candidate to candidate looking for someone who could beat the despised Donald Trump.

In the early ’80s, in Korea, the Army Preventive Medicine Service was responsible for educating the troops and families on precaution for using “host nation” foods. We followed along pretty faithfully until Wife tried doing what they said about the huge beautiful local strawberries. A few minutes of treatment, and we had strawberry/clorox puree.

That’s also where we learned the US Army Veterinary Service had the last word on the safety of commissary meat. And where the kids learned the word “comestible”.

That’s another reason the Repubs dislike it so much where votes are close in elections. They know they will lose or it will expose their shenanigans (thank you spellcheck).
