Notice how he’s not going after the parent company (NBC), he is singling out this one local affiliate. He knows if he goes after NBC itself, the case will drag out forever in a battle between the Trump campaign and the network’s lawyers. But go after the affiliate itself and he figures he can force them to knuckle under to his demands to pull a “false” ad.

re: #2 Targetpractice

It’s Trump trying to SLAPP suit his way to reelection by silencing critics.

They’d never get past discovery, and going after affiliates in states that don’t have anti-SLAPP laws means that he’s trying to abuse the law to protect himself from valid criticism.

The intent being to do as he’s done for years with small businesses and contractors he’s made deals with: Threaten to bury them under months or years of costly litigation, with the only “victory” being court costs that will never be repaid by him and a ruling he’ll simply ignore.

KGxvi  Apr 13, 2020 • 10:32:03am

By filing suit, the Trump campaign has guaranteed that this ad gets free airtime with every story run about the litigation. Moreover, NBC may come to the defense of its affiliate, depending on the relationship, which means long drawn out battle wherein the campaign is spending money on litigation instead of campaigning.

I’d be willing to bet that Biden gave Bernie assurances that he would not be excluded from the drafting from the 2020 platform, as it is becoming more and more likely that there won’t be a traditional convention where the delegates would be voting as blocs for specific planks.

Here as well. Another part of the fence came down. They closed our local Lowes as someone tested positive. We’ve band-aided the sections that blew out (one post affecting two sections last week and multiple individual boards now) all of which should hold… For now.

Whoever built this fence needs lessons. They nailed the slats into the crossbeams and missed making contact with those crossbeams like 50%. So a 6’ slat has maybe one nail holding it on.

FDA has 3 phases of drug testing on humans:

Phase 1 studies (typically involve 20 to 80 people).
Phase 2 studies (typically involve a few dozen to about 300 people).
Phase 3 studies (typically involve several hundred to about 3,000 people).

The FDA would shit can any drug if it had that kind of performance in any phase. But because Trump, they’re going to push this regardless of the consequences - like investigating other drugs that might be more useful/successful.

To be fair — they had to select people who are in the administration or who supported the administration policy; once you have those limitations, who can you get to serve on a committee?

Find out he’s the sorry shit who thinks the best answer to America’s trade issues is protectionism and spent the last 3 or so years getting gobsmacked whenever his latest effort to win over Beijing ended up in ratcheting up of the trade war.

Now I’m totally reassured about this Council.//////

my guess is eventually they’re gonna ‘opine’ that the economy will ‘only’ contract by like 20 or something percent and that’s a win because ‘everyone else’ is predicting 30+

just trump saying 60k deaths is a win because everyone’s predicting 100k+

The ACA was passed through legislative sleight-of-hand, avoiding being struck down only because Roberts had an attack of conscience, and has kept running despite repeated attempts by a Repub-majority Congress to kill it.

Obviously the answer is to junk it and then roll the dice that we can get a whole new entitlement program passed and implemented in less than 4 years.///////

Trump is gonna do it. He’s gonna roll the dice and try to pressure the states to lift restrictions insanely sooner than he should. Because he needs to bring back that tremendous incredible economy he keeps pining for, as people die by the tens of thousands, or how will he be reelected? So he’s just gonna hope the virus doesn’t come roaring back even worse.

Which it probably will.

Maybe he thinks he can prevent it by sheer force of will, orange makeup and ridiculous hair. This is the craziest shit I have ever seen and I have seen my share of crazy shit.

I am 95% certain that my home town, a red city in Ratcliffe’s district, will tell Abbott to mind his own business if he tries to reopen schools.

And he’s going to do it in the most half-assed way, having the CDC issue various measures that will be more wishful thinking (everybody wear masks, wash hands thoroughly, maintain social distancing) in the belief that everybody will comply and life can just go “back to normal.”

The reality is that, without a vaccine or an effective cure, people are not going to chance it. Businesses that can will maintain WFM measures, while those that can’t will either stay closed or limp along due to non-existent customers. Sport leagues will continue to remain shuttered in the absence of sufficient testing supplies, while sports venues will stay closed rather than operating at a loss. The wingnut vision of an America that just springs back to life and goes on as if life didn’t grind to a stop is going to be replaced with one of a lot of very angry workers ordered to return to empty workplaces and told to work under threat of termination.

MN Gov Walz had said that he really wanted to reduce restrictions in MN for the sake of businesses, but then when he came out with his new recommendations last Friday, he decided that the stay-in-place order would remain unchanged. It’s possible that these governor groups will decide that the danger is still too high to open things up.

re: #186 Interesting Times

Others have pointed out that most of the countries with the best covid outcomes (Germany, New Zealand, Taiwan) have women in charge.

Speaking of women in charge leading to good outcomes, the Atlantic had a good article on SF mayor London Breed:

San Francisco had yet to confirm a single case of the coronavirus when Breed, the city’s 45-year-old first-term mayor, declared a state of emergency in late February. Two weeks later, Breed’s decision to ban gatherings of more than 1,000 people forced the hand of the Bay Area’s beloved Golden State Warriors, who this year moved into San Francisco’s Chase Center after nearly a half century in Oakland. Her decision, along with the NBA’s first positive case of the coronavirus, set in motion a chain of events that effectively shut down all of the nation’s major sports leagues.
[…]
Nearly a month after those initial orders to enforce social distancing, San Francisco and the broader Bay Area have emerged as a national model for how early and aggressive action can prevent the explosive rise in cases that has overwhelmed hospitals in New York, where leaders were slower to respond. San Francisco’s case count of 857 as of April 10—with just 13 recorded deaths due to the coronavirus—is much lower than that in metropolises of comparable size such as New Orleans, Detroit, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
[…]

I credit the NBA’s shutdown as the turning point in getting the country to realize the seriousness of the threat, which in turn prompted the shut downs around the country. Breed’s early action has saved countless lives.

Spoken word or music?

Reasonably quiet, well-treated room, or something noisier and more echoey?

Recording straight into a computer, or do you have a mic processor or outboard sound card you’re using? And can it provide phantom power?

Those are the three big factors that would inform a good answer from my end.

Not now, Chernobyl. We’ve got enough things to deal with.

Forest fires that have been burning for several days in northern Ukraine are now no more than a few kilometres from the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear plant, reports say.

Tour operator Yaroslav Emelianenko said one had reached the abandoned town of Pripyat, which used to serve the plant.

He said it was now just 2 km (1.24 miles) from where the most dangerous waste from the plant was stored.

1. Spoken word;

3. Connected to an outboard sound card (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, has phantom power).

On the one hand, it is somewhat nice to know that our system still works even when there is an utterly unqualified, feckless, know-nothing, sociopathic, megalomaniac in charge of the federal government:

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a West Coast plan Monday for ending the statewide stay-home order he imposed March 19 to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic that will be coordinated with Oregon and Washington.

But on the other, this would have been so much better if we had someone competent who was willing to listen to experts and actually engage in the job. It seems that federalism works best when the federal government is actually engaged and coordinating efforts between the states.

The UK briefing, when they put up a chart of deaths, mentioned that the public release of death data is based on deaths recorded at hospitals (which I presume includes hospice facilities.) The speaker made a point of mentioning that the deaths do not include deaths at home, and he said this is because this is the international standard for reporting deaths (in this kind of situation, implied.)

So I’m wondering about the US death reports. How many old people are, say, dying at their home or private senior residence facilities from Covid-19? Say in Florida, where there are many retirees, if an elderly person dies at home and someone calls an ambulance, does the morgue do a coronavirus test as a matter of practice on each body that is brought in?

For a long time, Kwik Trip has had this decent cheap apple smoked bacon. Alas, it is no more. They changed brands - about the same time as all this so it may be related - to a much worse and, though the same price, actively cheaper brand. I’ve got both - a mid-level condenser that sounds pretty good, and a bunch of SM-57s and 58s from my band.

I’ve used both for a number of applications - recording guitars, vocals, etc. For spoken word purposes, a 58 will do the job as well as a condenser. In terms of dynamic range, it’s difficult to tell the condenser from the dynamic. Opinions may differ on this. :)

I’d go with both. One of the enduring problems PRC faced in trying to court African countries during the Cold War was the racism their students faced when they went to China to study.

Meanwhile, in a country that actually does have a competent leader…

The death toll now is five, sadly. In particular there were a cluster of infections in a rest home - I think that accounts for three of them.

Remarkably, last year’s Easter road toll was four, while this year it was zero, and road deaths are down overall due to the massive drop in traffic volume. In a crude and somewhat tasteless sense, we’re even coming out ahead.

Figures fluctuate day to day, but there are somewhere north of a dozen hospitalised cases with a handful in ICU, one or two in a critical condition.

On the plus side, new infection counts are dropping, though it’s acknowledged that reduced testing over the holiday period will have depressed the number, and most promisingly, the number of recoveries has outstripped the number of new cases for several days in a row.

The level 4 lockdown continues and a review will be complete for a decision on April 29th whether to extend it further or drop to alert level 3.

Sound-related question: has anyone here used microphones in a professional capacity, and can recommend a good option for voice recordings?
Had a decent condenser mic that’s naturally dead just as I need it for the first time in years, and pondering possibilities…

There is a reason the sure sm58 is the most popular vocal mic in the world. It is inexpensive and great quality.

Wouldn’t a condenser cardioid microphone be better for voice recording/vocals in general than a dynamic cardioid microphone? At least that’s what I’ve been told quite a few times over the years…

Are you singing or podcasting? If you’re singing you want something that will capture your dynamic range. Unless you sing for Clutch and you yell, then it doesn’t matter LOL.

There have been similar articles (except for the part about turning to China) in the European press lately. Not ideal from my perspective, but understandable.

re: #274 Disloyal Archangel

Well in these parts the prices are higher than back home in the U.S., so with that in mind i’d say in the area of ~400$ (will end up ~600$ here)

That’s a good price point, and I have just the mic for you. Shure SM7B. Street price is in the $350-400 range in the US.

It’s a dynamic cardioid, which makes it much more tolerant of less-than-perfect rooms than a condenser would be.

But it’s much warmer and smoother sounding than your typical SM58-ish $100 dynamic.

It’s literally the mic Michael Jackson recorded Thriller with.

(And the mic I’m using on the air right now!)

With the Scarlett in front of it, you’ll get plenty of level to feed whatever recording software you’re using, too.

Governor Walz has extended our peacetime state of emergency to May 13; he has also stated that we need to be doing 3x-5x more testing than we are doing - over 5000 people per day - in order to consider beginning to reopen the state. I know the Republicans are eager to hold him to the end of the May 4 extended stay-at-home order, but if that’s what they want, they’d better figure out how to get Trump to stop stigginit and give us some goddamn help. In the filing, the XFL lists between $10 million and $50 million in liabilities and the same in assets. The league owes more than $14 million to its 25 largest unsecured creditors — including seven of the league’s eight head coaches.

A league source told The Hollywood Reporter that the XFL wants to maximize the value of its assets in order to pay creditors, and has begun the process of seeking a buyer.

A Dam is starting to groan under the weight of excessive water. Holes are starting to pop in the concrete as water spews out.

Donald Trump rushes up and seals ONE hole, but he doesn’t do it very well so it leaks a fair bit. Then he stands idly by while more keep breaks in the concrete keep appearing.

The Supervisor of the Dam arrives, sees what’s about to happen and asks Trump why the hell he hasn’t done anything.

Trump: “I did. I sealed this one up right away, very quickly as matter of fact. Some people didn’t even want me to do it, but I did it.”

SD: But what about all this other water that’s pouring through?

T: *shrugs*

This is basically why his claim that “closing” the country to Chinese people made any kind of difference is such utter bullshit.

She points out what’s normally done in the funeral “industry” in this video, and how they and hospitals plan for things like pandemics or disasters.

I used the phrase fear-mongering. She didn’t. My apologies.

She also brought up an interesting item: The tidbit circulating around social media saying the city might use parks for mass graves, claimed by someone who said they were a city official.

Speaking of Florida, this chart from their daily briefings keeps bothering me (this snip is from today’s briefing):

A few things:
Florida tests as shown in that chart are from a process that is not drawing random people from the population but instead testing those with reason to test (e.g., exposed to a known infected, or admitted to hospital, etc.).

Yet the % that come back positive remains around the same value over two weeks. The number of tests per day vary, but the positive % is pretty steady over two weeks.

For some reason this bothers me. Because it suggests that the positive rate is a function of the testing scheme, not necessarily a true representation of the entire population.

What make this even worse is that in addition to explicitly not giving a shit about human life, they don’t even give a shit about the economy. That’s just secondary to Republicans and most specifically Trump retaining power in November.

Yeah, you’re right. The only reason they even pretend to care about “the economy” is because only a booming economy gives him even a prayer of getting elected. If people are comfortable, they stay home, and he’s got a prayer. Otherwise, he only needs the economy to line his own personal pockets, and rich people will do that even if the rest of the country is a smoking crater.

One less thing to concern myself/ourselves with.
Thank you thank you thank you.
My daughter has been working from home for a few weeks with no problems.
Had to spring for a new computer, since ours were a bit older and buggy, but we pull it off.
Friend asked to borrow my chain saw, and I spent a very enjoyable hour or so bringing that back up today. I chained TONS of wood in the day, heated my house with it when it was dirt cheap and all you had to do was chain and split and stack. For years.
No. I do not miss it. Maybe that feeling when you crack oak with a maul…..Yeah that was a great feeling. And cranking off that last 24 inches of cull almost close enough for furniture work….
That and fine tuning a well made machine.
So a good day all around. I hope this evening finds all of you well and safe.

I used to mainly listen to podcasts while driving because I’d spend some days a couple of hours in the car. I’m way behind. But I had things to do yesterday and today and so I listened to Preet’s interview with Peter Baker. Yes, I understand that journalists have to keep their politics out of things, but this fucking guy. Preet: of the presidents you’ve covered, who has been the most interesting? Baker: oh, Trump by far. Journalists want the big story, and Trump is every day a big story.

So, confirmed. He will do nothing to antagonize Trump because he wants the fucking big story. In the interview he consistently soft-peddled Trump’s responses to covid-19 and said “who knows if earlier presidents wouldn’t have struggled.” (Sorry, that should have been a paraphrase.) Of course. But be brave and put it all together: other presidents were prepared and knew how to quickly assemble response teams. Anyway, listen for yourselves, it’s not all as bad as I have put out here.

If anyone is looking for a post-pandemic business opportunity, it looks like the new XFL is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Isn’t the XFL mainly run by Vince McMahon? So what part of this is him cutting and running in order to leave investors holding the bag?

I’d be worried about Redding, which has been taken over by a Trump-loving church (Bethel).

I’ve worried about Redding since I spent a year working there one week. //

(And those Bethel people are truly creepy.)

re: #448 Mike Lamb

This has the potential to be ugly. Trump says “Open”. Newsom, to pick an example, tells him to fuck himself. MAGAts in the OC follow Trump’s lead. Chaos ensues.

Would really love to hear what the supposed Constitutional sheriffs think about Trump playing dictator.

How about all the cricket chirping you hear instead of all the GOP Senators, Governors, Representatives and so forth since they are being silent when a few years ago they were so concerned and vocal about Obama declaring himself the dictator of the US?
