A loving tribute to our friend and inspiration Olivia Newton-John who Dane and I have had the honor of working with for 20+ years. At every step of the way a gracious and kind soul that also happens to be a ball of energy that uses her powers for good. Much love and thanks also to the incredible John Farrar who wrote this and so many of Olivia’s hits. This is truly a masterpiece sir!

Remember that guy you thought was OK, but his wife was, how do you say, a raging (wow Charles has filters…)
Yes and they danced and pointed fingers, and her friends felt sorry for her and his friends felt sorry him and it went on and on and….
And you would speak with them when they cornered you in work or the bar, because you couldn’t just up and leave, and besides, who knows what juicy tidbits he/she will drop?
And you would have “friends” who just couldn’t understand…
and why would anyone….
It must be…
First truth: He lays with her. She lays with him.
Second truth: If one left the other, neither would have any excuses for their wretched miserable existence.

Isn’t the XFL mainly run by Vince McMahon? So what part of this is him cutting and running in order to leave investors holding the bag?

Owned by Vince McMahon. And with the large drop in WWE stock price, McMahon’s on-paper wealth has diminished quite a bit (he owns a majority of WWE stock, at least by voting power.) Furthermore, McMahon recently borrowed against some of his WWE stock.

The XFL was always a weak idea for a business. But McMahon was apparently embarrassed enough by its previous failure to try again.

Does anyone have any idea why the US went from being around +30k new cases per day for a week or so, to +127k cases today. What’s different? Did we all of a sudden start doing actual widespread testing with kits that aren’t faulty lowest-bidder garbage or what?

64
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Apr 13, 2020 • 6:18:18pm

Expect the American right-wing media to jump on this:

New Zealand lockdown rules should be relaxed, local health experts say

It should be noted that New Zealand currently has only 1,349 cases and 5 deaths, so their hospitals are not overwhelmed. By population, they only have 280 cases per million.

Also note that the counter-government group’s proposal still includes bans on travels from overseas, to keep new infections from coming in.

Local grocery store had lots of people wearing bandanas/scarves, as well as proper face masks.

I realize that the idea of having to require a face covering is to make social pressure on those who want to flaunt the idea of a lockdown.

But bandanas are not really going to work very well at all. A good face mask needs to cover the nose and mouth in a complete circle, literally separating any free airflow from them. A bandana worn like a gangster doesn’t do this, all it does is force fomites out the bottom (which is the direction the items on a shelf probably are) or upwards past the nose.

The real problem is that stores around here just don’t have proper face masks available.

Furthermore, these made-at-home masks, or really any mask, does not lessen the need to wash one’s hands every time one goes out, or to not wash off items bought at the store. Transmission to another human is more likely from touching a surface and then rubbing your eyes, or picking your nose, etc.

I wonder how many of these bandana wearers realize they still have to continually go through these washing rituals?

Anyway, case numbers are down daily, which everyone probably rightly attributes to the social distancing. Simply by not going to groups and hugging/shaking hands with everyone else is likely the real difference in slowing the spread.

Meanwhile, also down on the underside of the planet:

‘Illegal’ dinner party behind Tasmania coronavirus cluster, Brendan Murphy says

An “illegal dinner party” of medical workers is linked to a coronavirus outbreak in northwest Tasmania, Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy says.

Two hospitals in Burnie were closed on Monday amid a cluster of more than 60 COVID-19 cases, including about 45 staff, associated with the facilities.

Dr Murphy was appearing on Tuesday before the Epidemic Response Committee, a select committee set up to run in the place of parliament, which has been suspended under New Zealand’s lockdown.

We thought we were doing really well in the last week then we had a cluster of 49 cases in a hospital in Tasmania just over the weekend, most of them went to an illegal dinner party of medical workers,” Dr Murphy told the committee via video link.

The reason people are encouraged to wear facemasks is because it helps reduce the transmission rates during the presymptomatic period (or asymptomatic period if one doesn’t ever develop symptoms). Is a cloth mask as effective as an N95 mask? No. But we need the N95 masks for medical folks right now and a cloth mask is more effective than not doing anything at all. Here’s a study out in the review process right now on the topic.

Not Worldometer, “only” 1,124.

Florida’s Health Dept. COVID-19 tracking page, which most sites use as their source data, is highly susceptible to input error. ie typos.
The other day they mistakenly inserted the number of non-resident cases “533” as the number of deaths in the state. Which resulted in everyone briefly reporting that Florida had a jump of 114 deaths overnight. A full 25% increase at the time.
The Florida dashboard never showed this jump because it relies on county & zip code data inputs.

My point is what qualifies as a “mask”. The paper you linked assumes the mask is actually a mask, that is, the airflow has to go through the cloth.

What I am lamenting are the simple bandanas people are wearing.

To get a proper mask, one could use any of the patterns online for sewing a simple mask, or there are even non-sewn examples with a little skill with scissors and folding.

Mrs Cranky has been making masks, but you can’t find elastic anywhere. Her latest use shoestrings that you tie behind your head.

To illustrate the connection between Trump, Trump’s friends in business, and Republican lackeys:

WWE considered essential business by Florida Governor

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings stated during a media briefing on Monday that WWE is now considered essential business by the Florida governor’s office. “I think initially there was a review that was done and they were not initially deemed an essential business,” Demings said. “With some conversation with the governor’s office regarding the governor’s order, they were deemed an essential business and therefore they were allowed to remain open.”

Orange county is where WWE has their training facility and from where they are still broadcasting their live shows.

The follow-up question will be, how many develop symptoms and how many are truly asymptomatic? I believe this rate is much lower, and is what would be needed to finally put to rest the Silent Asymptomatic Majority argument that the Republicans are putting forth.

I’m using a bandana that’s folded into a rectangular shape and held around the ears with two rubber bands. It seals off the chin pretty well but it’s not great at the sides of the nose. I just bought four masks from a company that someone suggested up-thread.

I’ve been in Walgreen’s where most of the shoppers and employees are not wearing masks. I do feel safer in my bandana mask, and wearing a mask also sends a message that you should probably stay away from me.

Per Minneapolis StarTrib

Nearly two dozen Minnesotans have been charged with violating Gov. Tim Walz’s emergency orders aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19, revealing that authorities continue to tack on the count as a secondary offense to other crimes.

The charge — violating any emergency powers order or rule — was filed against a man accused of exposing his genitals to people on a bike trail, a man who allegedly met up with a prostitute at a suburban hotel and a business owner who kept his Brainerd lingerie and underwear store open, among others.

Several of the first cases that were charged by April 3 showed that police and prosecutors often added the charge to unrelated offenses that included drunken driving, shooting paintballs at houses and driving with a canceled license.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Minnesota has criticized such practices.

“Criminal charges should be the last resort,” Teresa Nelson, legal director of the ACLU of Minnesota, previously said.

Nelson has said that police appeared to use the violation to punish people for other crimes and were sometimes “mean-spirited” in their policing of the executive orders.

I bought 50 covered hair bands that work like a charm. Use a bandanna, line it with paper towels or coffee filters, fold it in half and in half again (so you have a roughly 4”x20” rectangle). Slide two hair bands into both ends about 5” in at both sides. Then fold both ends to the center and tuck the ends into each other. One semi impervious (because of the paper towels/coffee filters) mask.

Expect the American right-wing media to jump on this:

New Zealand lockdown rules should be relaxed, local health experts say

[…]

Let’s look at today’s figures, from the televised daily briefing at 1:00pm. New Zealand’s population is about 4.9 million, and our land area is similarly comparable to Colorado’s.

We have had four additional deaths today, bringing the total to nine. Six of the nine, including three today, were from an outbreak in the Rosewood rest home’s psychogeriatric facility. Those infected had been transferred to Burwood Hospital in Christchurch.

* We have 17 new cases today, 8 confirmed and 9 probable.
* 82 more people have recovered, bringing the total to 628 recovered.
* There are a total of 1366 cases.
* Deducting the recovered and deceased, that’s 729 still active.
* 15 are in hospital, 3 in intensive care (one in critical condition.)

What we are doing now is working. No dissenting opinion can disregard that.

Counterpoint on mask vs. bandana wearing.

Part of the reason the CDC originally recommended against wearing masks (besides the whole attempt to prevent the public from buying up all the masks needed by hospital and other essential workers) is that unless you are wearing a properly fitted N95 respirator, the protection it grants to you and others isn’t anywhere close to 100% effective. At the same time, there is a worry that people wearing masks would think they were safer than they actually were and fail to follow social distancing guidelines, i.e. they would go out more often, fail to avoid crowds, fail to maintain proper distances and engage in other activities that would more than offset the benefits of wearing a mask.

I unfortunately have no choice but to wear a bandana. The fabric is actually fairly tight, better than what many people have in their masks, but as noted my breathing pulls through and pushes out near my nose where there is no seal. The base isn’t as much of a problems as it’s bunched against my neck and buried inside my coat. Essentially, it’s little more than safety theatre, with the benefit that it encourages social distancing from me and may help minimize the size and spread of the droplet cloud I produce on exhaling. Having said that, it’s still better protection than the 25% of people I see who have masks and either aren’t wearing them or are wearing them incorrectly (often in bizarre fashion).

There technically was a republican primary in Wisconsin as well and even though he was unopposed I suppose he still “won”

I wanna know what % he got compared to total Republicans who voted

I’m seeing a lot of over the mouth but not the nose

N95 masks are incredibly uncomfortable to wear properly. So people will fidget with them thus decreasing their effectiveness or even increasing the chance of fomite transmission as they are constantly touching and adjusting them.

I have a couple of shemagh/keffiyeh/lots of other names scarfs on order. I don’t want to waste any N95 masks but I am in the camp that anything is better than nothing. I try to stand back, turn to face away if I am getting too close, wash hands and using sanitizer more. At present there are very few cases near here; I do what I can to keep it that way.

It certainly isn’t going to protect me if someone coughs or sneezes at me, but actual masks are still hard to come by. I have a 3m respirator with some p95 filter cartridges that I got for some spray painting a while back, but I just don’t think I am ready to rock that at the grocery store yet.

That lineup - Fripp, Wetton, Cross, Bruford and percussionist Jamie Muir - was possibly the best Crimson lineup. Muir was only with them for Larks’ Tongues (leaving the band to become a monk!) but the remaining members went on to record the excellent Starless and Bible Black and Red albums.

I’d rate that lineup even higher than the original band, and I’d rate the Fripp, Belew, Levin and Bruford lineup second. Consistently ass-kicking prog greatness.

Oh, my gawd, “Democrats were worried about people getting sick, but then voted anyway”:

“Democrats capitalized on the chaos,” said Matt Batzel, the Wisconsin-based executive director of American Majority, a conservative grass-roots training organization. “Democrats and Governor Evers flip-flopping from there is no reason to postpone the election to fear-mongering that people shouldn’t vote in person, gave them an advantage that carried the day. All the while, the left organized a historic number of absentee ballot requests.”

Agreed. The first album was wowza, but LTiA, SaBB and Red were ridiculously good. Took them all to college (or bought them there) and played them LOUD. Some loved them, some hated them. I was always a fan boy.

Remember, King Crimson lost a drummer to COVID. I saw him with them on their last swing through New York.

Saw them on their last tour as well. And the dueling drum work in unusual time signatures was amazing.

Looks like Israeli or Warsaw Pact. A lady in Tel Aviv threw a fatal heart attack during an anthrax panic because she didn’t pull the canister seal off the air intake.

That’s 100% the Israeli ABC “אב”כ” masks that were and have been distributed to the entire population in preparation for emergency biochemical war scenarios since the First Gulf War.
Was issued one myself the first time I was in the country with my parents. Came standard with instructions and Atropen emergency injectors intended for the possibility of chemical weapon exposure.
