A long-awaited endorsement for Joe Biden, and watching it was almost painful because of the contrast with the current sociopathic squatter in the White House.

On April 14, 2020, President Obama endorsed Joe Biden For President. He noted Biden’s leadership on health care, climate change, and the 2008 recovery, and said that he believes that Biden is the person who can heal the country in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. With President Obama on our team, we’re going to unite our party and restore the soul of the nation. Together, we will defeat Donald Trump. Join our campaign: http://www.joebiden.com

I just saw a Trumpist on FB accuse those criticizing the President’s horrific coronavirus response of being “satin worshippers” and now I can’t get the image out of my mind.

He means “stain worshipers”, and we know what sort of stains he is talking about…

I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)  Apr 14, 2020 • 10:25:59am

remember way back just a couple of weeks ago:

…Trump stood in front of the White House and promised the US a way to get tested for COVID-19. Google was working on a new website, he said, which would give every American consumer an easy way to see if they should be tested and find a place to get that test. Vice President Pence had promised a “dramatic increase in testing capacity” at a press conference a few days earlier — and now, it looked like an American tech giant was swooping in to make good on the promise.

It’s now clear that nothing of the kind was actually happening.

25,000+ dead Americans, on its way to 26,000 before the end of the day.

Trump’s busy baffling with bulkshit on what can be done to treat covid19 patients. Still hawking an unproven remedy no better than snake oil at this point.

And still leading from the rear. These pressers are all about trying to soothe his fragile ego, because he’s got nothing to offer. Nothing. He can’t do his fucking job. He can’t play golf, and further interfering and slowing the response will now affect red states as much or more than blue states.

Trump was ignoring the needs of the country and allowing the virus to spread while he was golfing and holding his rallies. No evidence that this nation would have fared better if he could have continued unrestrained his favorite activities.

Their Judith Miller was a cheerleader that helped get us into the Iraq war. Their daily email coverage helped sink Hillary’s candidacy. And now they are using Tara Reade coverage to do the same to Biden — anything to promote the treasonous Putin-loving grifter that occupies the White House. The Burisma story that they were going to promote died with Trump’s Ukraine call investigation. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday is expected to outline a framework to reopen California’s economy, one day after unveiling a pact with Oregon and Washington to work jointly to lift stay-at-home restrictions on the West Coast.

Without giving away details or a time frame, Newsom said Monday that the “bottom-up plan” will feature a “framework for targeted interventions and easing of restrictions in the state to allow us to toggle between approaching issues on the population basis versus on an individual basis.”

He emphasized that science — “and not political pressure” — will guide the decision-making.

One critical component of any plan will be ensuring that COVID-19 won’t spread rapidly through the community once stay-at-home rules are lifted, which is a major concern. Federal health experts have already warned that the virus could see a resurgence in the fall.

This is what real leadership looks like. Something Donald J. Trump and his ilk will never understand.

But there was another detail in the New York Times report that hasn’t gotten very much attention. Not only did Capt. Crozier risk his own career—he protected the senior officers below him. They asked to sign on to the now infamous letter, and he refused. He showed the kind of selflessness that is at the core of military and civic duty. He sacrificed his entire career for the sailors on that ship. Is it any wonder they cheered him so enthusiastically as he departed? Daily Kos

No, you idiot, the media is asking why Trump didn’t declare an emergency, invoke the Defense Production Act to create ventilators and PPE, and set up a streamlined process to distribute it to states in February.

from the trusty electoral-vote.com this AM

Some sizable portion of Sanders’ supporters would have held their noses and voted for Biden no matter what the Vermont Senator did. The question now is: How much influence will Sanders have over the remainder? …folks who see little difference between Biden and Satan, and say they will vote third party or will vote for Trump, in order to register their anger and/or to help “bring down” the system. Maybe folks like that are lost causes for the Democrats.

On the other hand, the healing process is starting earlier than it did in 2016, and with a candidate that is generally more popular than Hillary Clinton, and who also has a warmer relationship with Sanders. For what it is worth, roughly 20% of Sanders voters said, on the day he left the race, that they would not vote for Clinton under any circumstances. When it came time to actually vote, however, that percentage dropped about 7 points, to 13%. Right now, about 15% of Sanders voters say they will not vote for Biden under any circumstances. And remember, in politics a week is a long time. Between now and November, stuff can happen that can change minds.

until there’s a way to prevent people from getting it - we can think all the rosy thoughts we want.

it’s still gonna spread. because it doesnt care and it wont become less contagious.

so until there’s a vaccine, how do I keep from infecting me and mine?
distance, PPE (as best as I can) and minimize the opportunity be in contact with where the germs are - limited shopping and outings.

i dont care what they re-open up. im not putting me and mine in danger.
and much as i’d like to do things - like fly to see family, i think the evaluation is ez:

how likely is it i’ll get infected in the uber (or whatever), airport, bathrooms, plane, bathrooms, airport, bathrooms, uber and is it worth the risk to my wife’s life?

to me it’s a no brainer. i love my family. and i will not threaten my wife’s health because i’d like to be in the same room with them.

The 31 deaths reported were an all-time high for a single day, while the number of known infections rose by 718, dwarfing Monday’s increase of 422 cases (which had been the lowest one-day increase since late March).

In addition, a jump of 233 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state ended a streak that had seen hospital numbers decline for three consecutive days.

The updated numbers, provided by the Department of State Health Services in the early afternoon Tuesday, listed 318 deaths, 1,409 hospitalizations and 14,624 known cases of COVID-19 in the state.

As you can tell, I’m tired of their bullshit.

Trump will signal he wants the economy reopened. Blue states will do it slowly or not go for it at all, but most red states will ramp back up pretty quickly and well, do the math.

If they persist in getting too close, you can throw it at them. For years I have wanted to rig my car with a retractable catapult that would pop up and fling cow pies at coal-rollers, tailgaters, bright-lighters and other road-pests. Unfortunately, there are already patents for dung catapults so I couldn’t make real money from it. Maybe I could distribute 3-D printer plans for it. Millions of them would really clean up the roads; except for the masses of cow shit, of course. That would still be better than the obnoxious human shit-heads, though, and it would do wonders for the roadside grass.

Governor Walz is emphasizing the testing angle very hard, knowing that he will be feeling immense pressure from the President and from the Republicans here at home to reopen the state as soon as humanly possible, and refusing to do so unless it can be done with a modicum of safety and in accordance with the opinions of actual health experts, like the esteemed Dr. Fauci. The problem is that even if the Republican Party goes the way of the Whigs, their voters will still exist and will still vote for terrible people. And our system has evolved into a system that really can’t support multi-party politics. Best case scenario is something like the UK has where you have the Tories, Labor, and the Lib Dems, and then possibly a unique regional party, but unless and until some region (we all know which reason) starts talking about becoming independent, we likely won’t have one of those.

1. Federal UBI, paid for by an excise tax on stock and commodity transactions.
2. States could also over UBI, paid for by whatever revenue source they deem appropriate.
3. Some sort of reverse phasing, so it is universal, as in everyone regardless of wealth/income gets say $1,000/month non-taxable, but lower income folks get more; preferably with the hope of eliminating traditional welfare programs, effectively just giving people money directly with no strings attached.

I’ve been doing a spreadsheet on Minnesota’s COVID data that is accurate to 3/1 for the numbers I present here (number tested, number of new cases, deaths), and to 3/24 (when testing was widened out to include third-party labs beyond the Minnesota Department of Health) for some other related data. It appears that we’re not quite past the peak here yet, as the main indicator pointed out by FiveThirtyEight (share of positive tests) has been steadily increasing. However, our social distancing measures have been having an impact; the increase is EXTREMELY slow, and it’s literally within the margin of error as to whether it’s still increasing or flat. The doubling rate has been hovering at or above 5 days (this is my math, which I assume is close but incorrect, as the governor’s office says 8 days) since the 24th.

Los Angeles County has nearly 10 million people living in it, so a reported number of 10,000 COVID-19 adds is ( or would be, if it wasn’t likely to be a vast undercount) not too bad a rate. Unfortunately, it looks like the mortality rate is right there at the “standard” 3.5%.

One consequence of doing science, at least, is that I am allergic to the idea of saying “why yes, something is most definitely absolutely impossible” because unless I have proof that completely rules it out and can provide that proof for others to look at, you pretty much cannot do that in a paper.

It’s more of that “The US pays way more. Other countries don’t pay their fair share.” bullshit like he says about NATO.

also…

The WHO does need to answer for uncritically parroting CPC lies about COVID-19 in December and January, but Trump sees that as “The WHO is working for VaChina!!!” or “The WHO was lying so that I would look bad.” So “Fuck ‘em”.

In theory, yes, revoking funding for WHO has to happen in Congress. In reality? He could slow roll payments. He could declare a state of emergency and re-allocate those funds to something else. And while we once thought stuff like that would have consequences, they do not because the Congressional GOP has decided that they don’t actually give a fuck.

One consequence of doing science, at least, is that I am allergic to the idea of saying “why yes, something is most definitely absolutely impossible” because unless I have proof that completely rules it out and can provide that proof for others to look at, you pretty much cannot do that in a paper.

I can say it’s really fucking unlikely and I don’t personally believe it to be the case though.

Note that all of this plays really poorly to a population that dislikes nuance and demands yes or no answers, though. Figuring out how to thread that needle is a big part of science communication and one reason why I think things so often go poorly on that front. The scientific community uses language in some very specific and different ways compared to the world at large.

I don’t like this either, but a podcast I listen to (sinica) and like for its fairness wtr to China interviewed a Chinese specialist who said it could not be ruled out.

ETA: I forgot to say that he called it unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility.

I just wish they would lead with the “it is unlikely” party. And I get that there is an investigation and that it is in the realm of possibilities, but I’d prefer less speculative bullshit. Especially since, for all the crazies (and crazy-curious or crazy-adjacent) out there, it is a small stroll from “accidental laboratory infection” to “bioweapon gone awry”

I think this is much of what helps make pseudoscience with its false certainties so much easier to spread than real science.

People want answers, and if problems are complicated then simple, stupid answers will be preferred by almost everyone over real investigations leading to partial, tentative and/or complicated answers.

Eh, the legal community has actually gotten better at that… but it has led to contracts getting longer. The more annoying thing is when you try to explain something to them about why they can’t do something and their response is:

It’s looking like these briefings are only being carried cable-only now. Over-the-air broadcast networks and their affiliates seem to be sticking with their normal late afternoon/early evening programming.

Even with today’s levels of cable/satellite penetration, I wonder how Trump’s ratings for these propaganda performances actually do compare with the non-cable and non-news/talk competition.

They’ve been doing shows with no audiences, and as I understand, that’s the plan going forward. I actually watched part of Raw last night, and it was kind of weird. I don’t know that pro wrestling works without a crowd, at least in its present form.

They had been pre-taping shows (including Wrestlemania last weekend), but apparently there is an issue with their TV contracts about having to have a certain number of live shows (one dirt sheet suggested it was something like 49 of 52 weeks per year).

What the fuck is happening.

ourworldindata.org

US daily testing numbers are trending down. I’m not talking about positive test results, I’m talking about tests run.

If I were completely paranoid, I would say that testing is being suppressed in order to create a downwards curve in positives, giving Big Money a reason to push for “opening the country”. This is a combined operation, of course, with multiple people monkey-wrenching testing, including the White House suppressing federal funds for it, and the usual rightwing droolers, financial press wannabes, and actual billionaires gaming the system doing the media press to get the unwashed masses to throw themselves on the altar of stock prices.

But while dreams of some of this probably are rattling around in the Administration’s collective consciousness, I fear that what’s actually happening is they’re just too fucking incompetent to make the systems work right.

Saw news that Korea was shipping us 600k test kits. That’s about four days of national usage at current rates. Just watch, total numbers will still go down.

re: #391 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

1000x THIS. I haven’t missed a season at Target Field since it opened in 2010. This might be my first. But you know what, I DON’T CARE if it means the country, and as many people in it as possible, get to live to play another day.

I friend of mine heard that I had the covid and sent me a text asking if I was Ok and if there is anything he can do. I said take me to a game when this is over (he has seats at Yankee stadium three rows behind the Yank’s dugout). I never ask cause they are super expensive, but I figured why not. Said he would love to take me, but I may have to wait a year until they play. Not going until there is a vaccine. Having Covid does not guarantee immunity (at least that’s the current thinking. No one knows for sure).

When baseball returns, it returns. Until then the Astros are cheaters.

Biden won’t win KY but McGrath can definitely beat Mitch. Mitch is beatable in a presidential election year especially this one. Mitch and Cornyn hopefully both get wiped out.

I hope you’re right, but unfortunately (for the country) I think the odds of booting Cornyn are just too long (Because Texas). Just a WAG, though: I think Tillis in NC MAY be vulnerable: and while it’s a good thought that old McTurtle may be in election trouble, I still think KY is at best, a toss-up.

And another WAG, pre-Coronavirus, I would have thought the prospect of a 50-50 Senate in the next Congress was a best-case scenario: now, I’m thinking it’s the worst-case: flipping the Senate is vital (for the country): working to grab one of the GA seats would really seal the deal IMO…

re: #401 Jack Burton

Not an expert on this but….

If the latter is true, the former might never be a thing, at least not in the traditional sense.

There are serological tests out there now that can detected antibodies specific to COVID-19. The presence of those antibodies strongly suggests that for folks who have them, they are immune for at least some period of time. This would be consistent with other coronaviruses, including the original SARS. There is a dataset that suggests that some people who had mild cases do not necessarily develop those antibodies, but even among that group it was a minority of cases, not the majority.

Can we say for sure that immunity is a given and how long it lasts? No. Does the evidence suggest that it happens in the majority of cases and likely lasts for at least some time? Yes.

(I have yet to see any good data to suggest actual reinfection is a thing that’s happening, compared to false negatives plus potentially resurgence of symptoms. If someone’s got a paper on that instead of just news articles, that would be great.)

Hey, we’re back from the hospital.

I WON THE LOTTO! Thirteen free tickets and $3!

Extremely local news behind the hide bar.

The hospital outpatient clinics were mostly a ghost town. You don’t get in the hospital except by two guarded entrances and with a mask. No mask, no enter. All visitors are now banned.

Hit the grocery store and gas station on the way home. (Premium gas: $3.45. Whar oil price war?)

The store has more added features, including social distancing lines in the checkout lanes.

Paper products were hit hard but available. No sanitising supplies of any kind, nor regular bleach.

This store happens to sell “concentrated bleach” (that is, 8.25% sodium hypochlorite instead of the usual 5.4% laundry bleach with perfume—the reason the market sells the high load bleach is because all the water systems around here which use chlorine have to use at least 8% by state law—nothing prohibits you from using it for laundry or cleaning though, just use a bit less). No Lysol, wipes, hand sanitiser, or ramen noodles (except hot chili). Plenty of Borax, regular laundry soap, Felz Naptha soap, &c.

Regular potato chips were all sold out of all brands including the house brand. Fritos were sold out. However, lots of Dot’s pretzels (Dot’s is a small business in North Dakota; their pretzels are a “secret formula” which is pretty good). No sugar-free cookies.

I got the only loaf of rye bread. Ocean Spray original cranberry juice was gone except two bottles, but it was on a 50% markdown.

Cauliflower was on sale for lower than what my wife says she’s seen in several years; produce was well-stocked.

The butcher shop is still only letting two people in at a time, but no line to get in. Loaded up on various steaks and lunchmeats.

To some extent, lack of well documented cases strongly suggests that reinfection is not likely for the vast majority of people. (You could still see isolated cases where the immune system just doesn’t catch on, but we see that with regular stuff too - see why herd immunity matters for vaccines. It’s not just for the people who can’t have the vaccine - it’s also for the people whose bodies just don’t produce the antibodies for some reason or another.)

It is a little hard to test this in humans as you can’t ethically expose someone to the virus again if you don’t already know the answer, but small studies in primates have shown you can not reinfect them after they have recovered.

I’ve been a huge sports fan from age 3 (first football game I went to). It is absolutely insane the whole industry just went away in a split second. But I do not want any of it back until the players are guaranteed to be safe. Obviously, there won’t (shouldn’t be, but our country is really stupid like its “president”) be crowds watching them play, but I think full testing of the players may make some sort of sports ball happen sooner rather than later. Too much money in it.

I fear they are going to push the players into a terribly unsafe situation though. I really do.

All the federal test sites were defunded and shut down last Friday. States have not had the time and resources to step up and replace the lost capacity yet.

Positive case doubling about every 7-8 days now. Which looks like some flattening effect is happening.
