Lyrics:
Look for the good in everything
Look for the people who will set your soul free
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good in everyone

Look for the good in everything
Look for the people who will set your soul free
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good in everyone

People done gone crazy / People done gone mad
People done forgot the superpowers we all have
We were born to love not hate / We can decide our fate
& look for the good in everyone & celebrate all our mistakes
If there’s a silver lining (silver lining)
You still have to find it (find it, find i-i-i-it)

Look for the good in everything
Look for the people who will set your soul free
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good in everyone

Everyone needs sunshine / Everyone needs rain
Everyone is carrying around some kind of pain
I see who you are / You’re just like me
I see you’re searching for a purpose / Guided by a dream
I see who you are / I’m just like you
I get lost sometimes & I forget what I came here to do
I keep on trying (keep on trying)
When it gets frightening

Look for the good in everything
Look for the people who will set your soul free
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good / Look for the good / Look for the good in everyone

Everyone is nature / Everyone is God
Everyone is love & light & vibration
Look for the good / Look for the good
Everyone gets mad sometimes & maybe they should
Look for the good / Look for the good
Yeah, look out for all the heroes in your neighborhood
Look for the good / Look for the good
Life sure would be sweeter if everybody would

Look for the good in everything
Look for the people who will set your soul free
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good in everyone

Look for the good in everything
Look for the people who will set your soul free
It always seems impossible until it’s done
Look for the good / Look for the good / Look for the good in everyone

For some reason Facebook is recommending to me the Dan Crenshaw for President 2024 group.

I can only presume that some of my wingnut relatives must belong to it.

I mean… Facebook gives me dozens of group suggestions, most of which make sense (genealogy, horticulture, local events.)

But that Crenshaw one stands out. It’s the only political and only wingnut one in the bunch.

How’d it get there?

For skin as light as Laura’s, a mere 15 minutes is all that it takes in the daylight to produce the vitamin D one needs.

Conversely, many dairy products are fortified in D.

And most people who take vitamins already take more than enough D.

Florida sees sudden spike in reported coronavirus cases as more than 1,000 are confirmed

After Florida saw its highest day of confirmed cases and then a five-day decline, the state reported over 1,000 new cases Thursday evening, going back to the trend lines of early April.

Since Wednesday evening, the Florida Department of Health reported 1,072 new cases, bringing the state total to 29,648. The death toll rose by 60 for the second consecutive day, leading the state deaths to reach nearly 1,000 at 987.

[…]

I wonder how many Florida deaths at home from Covid-19 are not being reported?

Is he really the dumbest person in the country? He is operating as a reality star without the benefit of professional writers or editors and making it up as he goes along — and meanwhile there are tens of millions of Americans who worship him and accept his word. I would have to say these tens of millions are dumber than he is by at least an order of magnitude. He is cunning and has sufficient street smarts that have gained him a large fan club of true believers. It is tiring to hear these acolytes throwing out the term TDS to describe everyone who does not share their devotion to their master.

I wonder how many Florida deaths at home from Covid-19 are not being reported?

Interestingly, Florida has reported an increase of 60 deaths for each of the past two days. Yet, on the state’s dashboard the “Death by Day’ graph has not allocated those deaths to those days.
Most likely, those deaths have recently been confirmed via autopsy, and have been added to the graph at the actual time of their death.
I can vouch that Florida medical examiners generally have a long backlog. It took the Broward County medical examiner roughly four weeks issue a death certificate, and release my mother’s remains last year.

Dr Lizardo  Apr 24, 2020 • 12:14:11am

The other day I mentioned that there seemed to be some evidence that nicotine may have some use in fighting SARS-CoV-2.

Nicotine could protect people from contracting the coronavirus, according to new research in France, where further trials are planned to test whether the substance could be used to prevent or treat the deadly illness.
The findings come after researchers at a top Paris hospital examined 343 coronavirus patients along with 139 people infected with the illness with milder symptoms.

They found that a low number of them smoked, compared to smoking rates of around 35 percent in France’s general population.

“Among these patients, only five percent were smokers,” said Zahir Amoura, the study’s co-author and a professor of internal medicine.

The research echoed similar findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month that suggested that 12.6 percent of 1,000 people infected in China were smokers. That was a much lower figure than the number of regular smokers in China’s general population, about 26 percent, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

ndtv.com

In France, they’re testing transdermal nicotine patches to see what it does. It would be the supreme irony if it turned out that nicotine does have some use after all. It reminds me of that scene in Woody Allen’s Sleeper:

The number of completely contradictory things I keep hearing about COVID-19 is starting to get annoying.

Nicotine use might protect against COVID-19

and

COVID-19 kills smokers at a rate 4 (or whatever number) times higher than non-smokers

These are mutually exclusive, so who is/was talking out of their ass?

re: #87 Jack Burton

Could be a bit of a paradox. While it’s possible nicotine may block SARS-CoV-2, at the same time, smokers - and especially older smokers - are at greater risk as a lifetime of smoking has damaged and weakened the lungs. I would certainly imagine older smokers with COPD would be at the highest risk. Basically, nicotine consumption (through smoking) might prevent the infection (and that’s what’s being looked at), but at the same time, if they do get infected, they’re in serious danger.

That’s why the French are using nicotine patches - to see what, if any, effect nicotine in the bloodstream has on this novel coronavirus. The downside, of course, is that nicotine is highly addictive. Like I said, it could end up being a paradox. Let’s say it works and it can be shown that nicotine receptors help block infection by a significant percentage - great….you now have a much lower risk of getting infected and that would be good news. On the other hand, you end up addicted to nicotine, and that’s not such good news.

Today in history:
April 24, 1915, is usually said to be the start date for the massacre in the Ottoman Empire, often referred to as the Genocide of 1915. The night between April 24 and April 25, hundreds of politicians, intellectuals and religious leaders of people were arrested, deported, and murdered in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople.
About one million Armenians were murdered and hundreds of thousands of Assyrians, Syrians, Chaldeans and Greeks. Most were killed during the years 1915-1916, but the persecution and murder continued until 1923.

Sauce: Instagram

“Oh dear. These nicotine patches just kept me alive against a deadly virus, but now I’m addicted to nicotine.” I can easily think of worse outcomes. Like being unable to find the fucking butterfly in a puzzle designed for 4 year olds.

So President Dementia Patient muses about injecting disinfectant and a major multinational corporation felt compelled to issue a warning against doing so.

The British company that makes Lysol, and other disinfectants, released a public statement imploring consumers NOT to administer their disinfectant products in the human body. The remarkable statement comes hours after President Donald Trump curiously suggested some medically questionable remedies to the deadly Covid-19 contagion behind the coronavirus pandemic.

During Thursday night’s regular White House briefing from the coronavirus task force, President Trump suggested that household bleaching agents in most surface disinfectants to a possible internal treatment for humans, which would be toxic and possibly fatal.

“Then I see the disinfectant, one minute. Is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside, or almost a cleaning,” Trump noted. “Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it’d be interesting to check that so that you’ll have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds interesting to me. So we’ll see, but the whole concept of the light, where it goes in one minute. That’s pretty powerful.”

Reckitt Benckiser Group is a British multinational consumer goods company that produces Lysol among many other disinfecting household goods, directly responded to Trump’s comments, writing “we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route).”

Donald Trump is warning “China will own the United States” if Joe Biden is elected president.

But Trump himself is tens of millions of dollars in debt to China: In 2012, his real estate partner refinanced one of Trump’s most prized New York buildings for almost $1 billion. The debt includes $211 million from the state-owned Bank of China — its first loan of this kind in the U.S. — which matures in the middle of what could be Trump’s second term, financial records show.

Steps away from Trump Tower in Manhattan, the 43-story 1290 Avenue of the Americas skyscraper spans an entire city block. Trump owns a 30 percent stake in the property valued at more than $1 billion, making it one of the priciest addresses in his portfolio, according to his financial disclosures.

Trump’s ownership of the building received a smattering of attention before and after his 2016 campaign. But the arrangement with the Bank of China — and its impending due date in 2022 — has gone largely unnoticed.

Pastor Greg Locke of Tennessee (Christian hate preacher who’s terrified of finding an LGBT person under every bed, who was cheating on his wife with his younger office assistant, with lots of hate for anyone who is not of the same religion as him) went off on one of those Astroturf protests to “open up the economy” for Supply-Side Jesus.

Seth Andrews (former Evangelical hate radio Christian broadcaster in Oklahoma, now The Thinking Atheist) normally doesn’t pay attention to people like Greg Locke, preferring to simply deal in counter-apologetics and talking with people on his show who have been damaged and discriminated against for their lack of faith, sometimes violently.

However, Rev. Locke’s stunt (which was mostly about him) drew out Mr. Andrews into an open letter he posted to his YouTube channel.

Greg Locke refuses to close his church, though he says he is moving his services outside, presumably to comply with social distancing.

Panhandle Public Health District has lifted the self-quarantine and mandatory reporting requirements if a person leaves the Nebraska Panhandle, as Covid-19 disease is now here. For what it’s worth, PPHD’s strict “no travel outside the Panhandle” order did delay the disease from entering here for several weeks. That helped relieve hospitals in the main part of the state and Colorado which are harder hit than we are.

Today’s new guidlines:
Updated self-quarantine guidelines for anyone that has traveled or will be traveling outside the state of Nebraska.
To limit spread in Nebraska, all travelers should self-quarantine for 14 days upon returning to Nebraska and immediately report any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection to their health care provider. This means if you travel out of Nebraska, you will be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days upon returning with these exceptions:

Residents that support the critical infrastructure of our community, such as truckers, railroad workers, drilling companies, grocery store employees, anything ag-related, and many more are encouraged to continue providing their vital services. When they are back in Nebraska, they are encouraged to use strict social distancing, wear a cloth mask, avoid non-essential travel, and monitor temperate twice-a-day and overall symptoms frequently. However, if a person has had direct communication with public health and has been directed to self-quarantine due to a close contact, this is enforceable in accordance with the Directed Health Measure.

Traveling to and from work is understandable; the idea is to stay in the same community and practice strict social distancing (keep 6-feet from others, wear a cloth face mask, and monitor symptoms)

So, another friend here asked me if Trump really said what he did, or if it was just some weird error in translation, so I sent her the transcript, which is as follows:

A question that probably some of you are thinking of if you’re totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So supposing we hit the body with a tremendous — whether it’s ultraviolet or very powerful light. And I think you said that hasn’t been checked, but you’re going test it. Supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going test that too. Sounds interesting. And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number in the lungs. It would be interesting to check you’re going have to use medical doctors with that, but it sounds interesting to me. And so we’ll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute, that’s pretty powerful.

to which she responded, “He’s insane.”

“Trump is aspirational”

Expect them to try and do math next based on the study out of NY that between 10 and 20% of New Yorkers have antibodies for covid19, which would suggest like 10x the number of cases than we’ve seen. Considering that the NY mortality rate is 7.7% (268,581 cases and 20,861 deaths), if the cases are actually understated by a magnitude of 10 so that there’s really 2.6 million cases, then the death rate would be .77% - which is still 7.7 times higher than the seasonal flu.

That’s the last gasp hope for the GOP right now - to muddy things by claiming once again that this isn’t so serious based on a study of antibodies among NYers.

One other interesting bit of information is that 40% of deaths in NJ are at nursing facilities. So, if you isolate the nursing facilities and those entering them you could do more to reduce the death toll than many other measures. But Trump’s motivations on nursing facilities is to eliminate infection control regulatory oversight. They made it easier for the businesses that run these facilities to make money, by ignoring infection control that saves lives of the people in their care and who work at these facilities.

Apparently I woke her up this morning by laughing out loud when I saw Trumps insanity. She turned over and got back to sleep. Later on, around 11:00 she’s up, I move back my little home office in the bedroom while she putters around downstairs (house now gleaming so bright from cleaning I have to wear sunglasses), turns on the TV and instantly understands exactly what I was laughing about.

One other interesting bit of information is that 40% of deaths in NJ are at nursing facilities. So, if you isolate the nursing facilities and those entering them you could do more to reduce the death toll than many other measures.

If you had a time machine.

They (at long last) tested the residents in the EPHAD (établissement d’hébergement pour personnes âgées dépendantes, old persons care facility) where my wife works. The contamination rate was 100%.

(All external visits were forbidden weeks before the lockdown started in France. Didn’t do any good because by then at least one of the staff was already infected).

NY found that the first death associated from covid19 was weeks earlier than first believed. It was openly circulating much earlier in NY. So yeah, trying to contain this now is all but impossible in the facilities already exposed, but there are those that aren’t yet exposed, and we should be working to make sure that they’re safe.

Yep, sounds right.

And you’re correct that nicotine can be absorbed through the skin - when I started vaping, I was explicitly told not to inhale the vapor: I was told to use it like a cigar, where you don’t inhale the smoke. The nicotine is absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth and enters the bloodstream that way.

Washington State Republicans Go Feral, Ignore Stay-At-Home Order (Wonkette)

LOL, feral.

Washington state has been shut down for several weeks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and while there was bipartisan consensus that residents shouldn’t die, nothing lasts forever, especially when tattoo parlors are closed.

Frustrated Republicans demand a “plan” from Gov. Jay Inslee for reopening. He has one: Stay the fuck home. It’s not a ridiculously circuitous plan. It’s straightforward and the necessary first step in advancing to Phase 1 of the White House’s own guidelines, which require 14 straight days of falling infection numbers. Washington isn’t there yet.

State Republicans released their own “road map” last Friday for opening Washington’s economy, and it’s paved with COVID-19. The plan identifies businesses that apparently have a “low risk” of spreading the coronavirus. This includes residential construction, car dealerships, and hairdressers. Seriously, do these people not know how hair styling works?

In other news, Utah is set to give Florida a run for its money for the “Stupidest State in the Nation” title:

Utah officials have already committed $800,000 on an initial order of 20,000 doses of malaria medication promoted as a possible treatment for COVID-19, according to records that surfaced Thursday as state lawmakers looked at carving out $8 million that could be for a second and much larger purchase of the unproven drug.

If approved by the Legislature, the $8 million set-aside could fund the massive hydroxychloroquine order that state health officials have been pondering in recent weeks. Officials say their idea is to procure the medicine for 200,000 coronavirus patients and distribute it to drug stores across the state, where it would be available at no cost to people with a prescription certifying their COVID-19 diagnosis.

The University of Nebraska announces tuition will be free for anyone who makes less than $60,000 for their four-year programmes and the two-year technical college, provided they otherwise qualify academically.

Tuition is covered for students who meet academic qualifications and have a family income of $60,000 or less (Adjusted Gross Income/AGI) or are Pell Grant-eligible.

We want to make sure that any Nebraskan who wants to get a college education can. And we don’t want cost to get in the way of getting your degree. With COVID-19 throwing many lives into disarray, some high school students may feel that college is not within their reach right now. We’re here to say: it is.

April 24 (Reuters) -

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday cautioned against the use of malaria drugs, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, in COVID-19 patients outside of hospitals and clinical trials, citing risks of serious heart rhythm problems.

The agency’s announcement comes a day after the European Union’s drug regulator warned of the drugs’ side effects and urged medical professionals to closely monitor patients on the medicines.

The FDA said it was aware of increased use of these medicines through outpatient prescriptions and the drugs could cause abnormal heart rhythms and dangerously rapid heart rate.

Businesses that can risk their low-paid workers, but in many cases not those who reap the majority of the profits.

Yeah, can we talk about this some more? The people who want to open up the states are either owners of businesses who want their peasants to come back to work, or people who use a service that is shut down and want to get their hair done or something. They could even be the same people. But they want the wage slaves to get back to work.

I can’t find it now, but a woman on Twitter pointed out that Gov. Brian Kemp’s (another clone of the GOP Governor Factory) order opening up certain business was, among other things, very racially tinged. Because a lot of the front line workers in those industries are people of color.

I’d also note that we have people like my sister bleating about the moral hazard of paying people more than they currently make to stay at home. OMG $600 a week! Who the hell is getting rich on $15/hour???

Cuomo is lighting into McConnell today, and he’s absolutely right. McConnell is busy trying to hold on to every dollar that NY sends to Kentucky by way of Washington, all while denying NY the money that it pays in and never sees.

Every time there’s a disaster in the NYC metro area it’s the same refrain from McConnell, Ryan and other GOPers that the NY area should dig deeper and pay more tax to cover costs instead of asking the feds for help. Or go bankrupt.

Never mind that NY pays far more in revenue to the feds than it gets back. It’s a deficit that is in the billions of dollars every year, and on the flip side, KY gets far more from the feds than it pays in. KY gets to balance its budget thanks to NY - and keep its taxes low thanks to NY.

So Fuck McConnell. It’s our money. If McConnell thinks states should declare bankruptcy, whip the count to see if that passes. It’s also an admission that the economy is thoroughly fucked, and would show just how bad things are under Trump.

Oh, and the unemployment rate is likely around 20% right now thanks to Trump.

The only way we recover from that is the containment of covid19, and right now the only way we get to that point is aggressive testing while maintaining stay at home measures. But Trump doesn’t care about any of that.

Yeah, I noticed that too. If a pharmacy has it, and your doctor gives you a prescription for the drug to treat the actual illnesses that it is designed for, I wouldn’t want to be the pharmacist who tells the customer you can’t have it. I wonder if they’ll try to jack up the price for non-covid users? How many ways can they try to fuck over the people who actually need this drug?

A hard limit on how many customers can come in at a time. Two with masks, zero without. We are getting tempered glass and stainless steel sneeze guards all around the counter that face the customer area. Maybe covering the countertops with copper in strategic areas. If I can buy in time, forehead thermometer for employees to be check for the foreseeable future. Maybe a UV cabinet for incoming boxes.

I just can’t wait to get back to productive activity other than disinfecting common areas around my place every day.

By giving legitimacy we encourage the next crackpot to think something up and immediately - yes a priori - sitting down at the table automatically because we delegitimize nothing. By engaging over the last 40 years, we’ve given every new crackpot idea instant legitimacy as long as it’s dressed up with a suit and tie. They’re at the table and now we have to, yes have to, get them back out the door. They don’t belong.

Trump.

Because the GOP lack the balls to stand up to the guy they’ve been defending for 3 years while he’s engaged in felony conduct, impeachable conduct, and now oversees the collapse of the US economy thanks to his historically awful response to a pandemic. There’s no reason to think that the GOP leaders will suddenly recognize that Trump is a mortal threat to their very survival. They are now and will forever be complicit in Trump’s criminal conduct.

You’ve probably heard them or invented some of your own during self-isolation. But a linguist consultant in England has identified more than 1,000 neologisms, or newly coined words and expressions, related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few:
Coronadodge: Physically avoiding others in public so as not to contract the virus.
Coronasplaining: Similar to “Mansplaining,” when someone who doesn’t know very much about a topic lectures others.
Covidiot: A person behaving irresponsibly in conditions of containment.
Locktail hour: Cocktail hour in lockdown.

Then they laugh, or shake their heads in disbelief, or ask me how anyone could be so colossally stupid as think Trump represents any kind of leadership whatsoever.

Making the rounds of morning religious channels to see what the apologists have to say about coronavirus or other things:

Are 501c3 Pastors Really Atheists? (The idea if a pastor closes a church on orders of a governor, the pastor is following “secularism,” not God.)

Atheists are responsible for coronavirus. (From the idea most people in China are atheists, the virus apparently surfaced in China, so atheists are responsible. Thus, atheists need to be opposed by “any means necessary” as they are trying to kill people. Stochastic terrorism from apologists to harm us in “self-defence”)

Leftists, liberals, “secularists,” and atheists are hypocrites wearing masks. (I don’t get it either.)

Atheists really believe in God. (That one is a common trope, goes with “there are no atheists in foxholes”)

The Unholy Alliance Between the Atheistic Chinese Communist Party and Pope Francis Has Been Going On for Quite Awhile (Catholics and atheists are trying to kill Christians with coronavirus, nevermind that Catholics are Christians)

Calling people losing their family members every day. It is a joke when Republicans say that they have urgency around this bill. The only folks that they have urgency around are folks like Ruth’s Chris steakhouse and Shake Shack. Those are the people getting assistance in this bill. You are not trying to fix this bill for mom and pops. And we have to fight to fund hospitals. Fighting to fund testing! That is what we’re fighting for in this bill! It is unconscionable! If you had urgency you would legislate like rent was due on May 1 and make sure we include rent and mortgage relief for our constituents!

I’m surprised that no one in Trumpworld has gone the route of how the US has done better managing cases than Europe. When you add up the cases and death toll across the EU, it’s higher than here in the US. Europe (includes EU and non EU) has over 1.2 million cases and 117,000 deaths. What’s ignored is that the US had weeks to prepare and still screwed up royally.

53°F here. Flood advisory for the North Platte River.

Long-term weather forecasts have much larger than average water flow through the river in the next couple months, due to the heavy snowfall in the Wyoming mountains. Wyoming dams are near capacity, so water releases are expected over the next couple weeks.

River flooding doesn’t affect my village, as we are on the edge of the Sandhills. That said, it can affect the town sewage lagoons, since they are not much above the riverbank in elevation.

How this sh*tposter escaped a notorious past to becoming an influential conservative (Daily Dot)

Comfortably Smug is one of Twitter’s most established trolls. And the D.C. political elite love him.

The lede:

President Donald Trump has, in the past three years, retweeted white nationalists, British Islamophobes, American Islamophobes, QAnon conspiracy theorists, Pizzagate conspiracy theorists, and, on Aug. 13, a man named Shashank Tripathi, who does not fall into any of the prior categories but is still a weird dude for the president to toss an RT to.

Tripathi is not particularly well-known by his real name. But online, he’s a legendary figure in the annals of trolling: A Twitter power-user who goes by @ComfortablySmug.

Tripathi has had many lives: In the mid-2000s, he described himself as a “hedge funder,” and honed his talents of online shit-stirring in the comments section of New York magazine’s website and a little-known insiders’ financial blog.
