We finished the movie for the original version of Full Metal Alchemist. One of the characters in the story was Fritz Lang, the director of Metropolis. And, if you know the story and his actual history, you’ll realize they had planned that for a while.

Big Brain tech question:

Musician in Hawaii
Musician in Ohio
They want to do a ‘live’ show together and broadcast the combine audio/video as a live recording.

This seems more sophisticated than what we see a lot of musicians are doing who are interacting from multiple sites in real time recording together then broadcasting from the cloud. We want to do that, but live.

Some of my radio engineering colleagues have been talking about how to do this. The whole latency thing with Zoom makes it a really tough task when you’re trying to do music and have to be perfectly in sync.

There’s a “use original audio” setting in Zoom that seems to help. It disables some of the echo cancellation and audio processing that Zoom usually uses when conferencing speech. It helps… but maybe not enough to pull off synchronized music from multiple locations.

I’m not sure why CNN is pushing this horseshyte.

Case studies are not clinical trials. They are the lowest standard of study. They state the study (which CNN doesn’t identify as a case study) is in JAMA, but doesn’t provide the source study or even the abstract.

Moreover, you have to go all the way to the bottom of CNN’s article to get to this:

They also confirmed that men were more likely to die than women, and no one under the age of 18 died.

The symptoms of infection were far from clear-cut. About a third of all patients showed up with fevers, 17% were breathing too fast and just under 30% needed extra oxygen. On average, patients were sent home after four days.

But 14% were treated in intensive care, 3% needed intensive dialysis and 21% died.

Since final data was only available on about half of the patients, it’s possible that more of those on ventilators survived, the researchers said — something that would drive down the 88% fatality rate for that group.

“This study reported mortality rates only for patients with definite outcomes (discharge or death), and a longer-term study may find different mortality rates as different segments of the population are infected,” the Northwell Health team wrote.

One of my Florida uncles went to work in the first Publix supermarket to support his parents and sisters when he was 15, and worked his way up to be an executive and stockholder. He liked cows so he bought some land and fed cows on it. Later on he sold it to Disney.

Berners telling themselves this will totally work. Bernie unsuspends, he stands up and demands Biden drop from the race over a totally unproven rape “allegation,” then he takes the nomination to the roars of approval from the voters who are thrilled that he “stood up for women.” He then goes on to win the presidency because millions of women will vote for him in light of his support of Tara Reade.

Rockwall has had it’s first Covid-19, at the long term care facility. It’s not a retirement home - we have those as well - but a place for people to recover from serious injury or illness, or if they need hospice. It has rehabilitation staff. My mother went there after her bypass surgery.

Hence the heavy sarcasm. To be a Berner is to believe Bernie is squeaky clean, to believe that there is simply no way for the Repubs to attack him and thus that’s why they’re “scared” of him running for the presidency.

Meanwhile, the reality is that the VT GOP only ever put up a token effort to defeat him and he’s never made it far enough in the Dem primaries to spend time doing more than slinging “SOCIALIST!!!” at him. And the most criticism he’s faced in his two presidential bids from the Dems has been on policy or ideals, with personal attacks largely avoided except to note things like how he has no friends in Congress.

The idea that he’s impervious to personal attacks or that he has nothing in his past that’s embarrassing or “disqualifying” is just absurd.

I’m going to call it ignorance. In this instance, most patients — all diseases — who are put on ventilators for any length of time die. Someone posted an article downstairs about strokes in covid-19 patients, as if it were something really new that it could sometimes affect more than the lungs (encephalitis is a known complication of influenza, though rare). And there have been various reports of various symptoms and complications, with no indication that they’re also very rare. Posted by people who know even less about the field of medicine than I do and aren’t qualified to evaluate what they’re reporting.

And, I expect, they’re scared, like most everyone, so they post with Great Alarm. But these reports, while very useful to clinicians, have to be put into context for the rest of us.

Watch out for this symptom of Corona virus: lazy ecofascism (goes to Ketan Joshi)

A lot of those pictures of animals in cities? Hijacked from other places. Dolphins in the Venice canals? Hundreds of miles away. Same with the swans. Clean water? No, just not stirred up water.

Eco-fascism was pushed by arch-racist John Tanton, who tried to use Zero Population Growth (now defunct, the non-fascist part is Population Connection today) and the Sierra Club to eliminate immigration. One of his proteges? Stephen Miller.

Memes about “humans are a virus on the planet” or “coronavirus is cleaning the Earth [of humans]”? They are created by eco-fascists and spread by credulous liberals.

And if voice anything other than skepticism at the official number, then you’re an idiot who bought into the “hoax” perpetuated by the “fake news media.”

So CEO Ryan Cranney offered them up for free, and that garnered some attention, of the East Side House Settlement charity, who reached out, and Cranney Farms was able to send a semi of potatoes cross country to Bronx, New York.

I recall summer of 2015, my family was visiting and had CNN on the TV.

Donald Trump was telling everyone how exciting his rallies were and how Jeb! Bush rallies were so boring that people fell asleep at them.

re: #85 John Hughes

We’re all going to die anyway due to existing issues.

The MAGAts have managed to work themselves into a very narrow criteria for counting a death as due to CV-19:

1. You must have been in perfect health upon infection. If you have any existing health issues, whether diagnosed before or found upon hospitalization, then it doesn’t count towards the total because of a “co-morbidity.”

2. You must have been tested for the infection and undergoing treatment before death. Any tests conducted postmortem are considered “invalid” because the doctors are obviously lying in exchange for bribes.

3. Even if one has met the first two criteria, you can still disregard their death if they expired in a blue state because it’s obvious that the governors of those states are padding the numbers any way they can to hurt Trump. Only deaths in red states count…unless the governor is a Democrat, then even those numbers are suspect.

Really, just assume that the whole thing remains a massive “hoax” that Dems are running to defeat Trump in November. And that any reported deaths are due to totally normal illnesses that are being attributed to some mythical virus that the Chinese lied to us all about.

Meanwhile, in Russia:

Putin announced a “non-working week” at the end of March. Anger and confusion are growing, as businesses and citizens still try to figure out what that means.

At the end of March, the day after Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced a week-long paid holiday to keep Russians at home and slow the spread of the coronavirus, he and a few advisors explained to a handful of business owners how the government was going to help them foot the bill.

The curiously-named “non-working week” would see all non-essential businesses shuttered, Putin had said, while employers would be legally required to carry on paying staff. Chief among the new measures to help them do that would be a salary loans scheme of state-backed interest free credit. Russia’s largest lenders would be launching it within a matter of days, businesses were told.

Three weeks later, after repeated complaints that banks were delaying or rejecting loan requests, Russia’s Economy Minister decided to test the program himself. Pretending to be an entrepreneur in need of support, Maxim Reshetnikov called two of Russia’s largest lenders.

“In one case, the hotline operator said the government had not yet signed the relevant decree, and at the other, they promised to issue a loan, but … in May,” he posted on Instagram following the experiment. Criticizing the banks for not acting faster, he added: “The stabilization of the economy now largely depends on how decisions made by the Russian government are implemented in the real economy.”

Also, cratering oil prices are adding to Russia’s woes:

“This is an unprecedented fiscal challenge for Putin,” Guriev added. “He’s never seen oil prices at this level. He doesn’t know how to run a country with oil prices so low. It’s a challenge for him to pick priorities. Something has to give.”

Heh. In Putin’s Russia, accidents abound.

This all hit at the worst possible moment; oil prices are at lows we haven’t seen in decades, then a pandemic for which the Russian healthcare system was almost certainly ill-prepared and now that it’s turning to warmer weather in Europe, the demand for Russian natural gas is at its seasonal low.

A trifecta.

That’s because a corrupt petrostate is the easiest kind of state to run economywise. You let your buds run the state oil industries and skim off as much as you can, and some other buds run the security organs and skim what they can from that. You really don’t have much use for the rest of the population, so give them just enough of the leftover to make sure they don’t get too restive and bombard them with propaganda, and beyond that leave them to their own devices.

Putin has half-assed tried to diversify with an independent tech industry to compete with silicon valley, but it was hard to skim a decent amount of money off of it without killing off the companies. Plus, the people involved were too hard to manage without sending in a bunch of skull-busting mob enforcers and killing off the companies that way.

So, Putin’s not a genius; he’s a jumped up spook who had the bloodymindedness and luck to end up on top of an emergent mafia state. Now, of course, he could change course and listen to the few remaining liberals kicking around government, but it’s hard and it means he gives up a lot of money and power. So, he’s probably going to ride Russia into the ground until and unless he manages to have a little unfortunate accident or six.

Senior official cited by Trump is subject of investigation (Yahoo!)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The senior Department of Homeland Security official who was thrust into the spotlight by President Donald Trump to describe the effects of temperature on COVID-19 has been the subject of misconduct allegations for his previous government work.

A Department of Energy Inspector General investigation was still pending Friday based on evidence submitted by a whistle-blower that William Bryan abused his government position with energy consulting work in Ukraine.

It’s unclear if Trump was aware of that investigation when he called on Bryan at his daily briefing Thursday to explain DHS research that prompted a presidential riff on the potential to cure the virus with disinfectant and kill it with sunlight.

But at some point, public institutions decay to the point that you have ultimate political authority but no ability to implement anything because government organs are corrupt and ineffective. That is the state that the Czars found themselves in back in 1917 and the Communist Party in the early 90’s…and that is where Putin is at right now.

CNN changed both the headline and story (now it says about 25% of people placed on a ventilator die) but they left that tweet as it was.

They also added the lines I put in italics here in the body of the article, without noting they’d changed the article.

This study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, describes the outlook for patients with severe Covid-19 disease. The report originally said that 12% of patients needed ventilators and that 88% of them had died.

But Karina Davidson, senior vice president of research at Northwell Health, said Saturday her team decided to clarify the wording of the report.

“We are updating our figures,” she told CNN. “These are updated for how many we know have had an outcome and how many remain in the hospital.”

The original report in JAMA stated that 12% of patients required ventilation and of them 88% died — but those numbers only represented a minority of patients whose outcome was known, not the entire body of patients. The updated numbers include all of the patients, including those who remained in the hospital at the time the data was gathered on April 4.

That’s the sort of dishonest editing of an article you’d expect from a common FOX News or NYT.

In this case, destroying the body politic and the ability of public institutions to function to the benefit of the public.

German public institutions and public servants can be terribly methodical and stodgy but they are generally ethical and eventually effective, even it seems they could be a lot more efficient in many cases.

But one is reminded civil servant is not paid based on provide a degree of performance, but to fulfill their duties.

And every morning they show up, look over the workload on their desks and say “Howdy, duties!”

So, WHO trying to clarify what they said about immunity passports, which is really due to the typical problem with reporters and science. What I got out of the original statement is that the world needs to do more research to verify that people are indeed immune to COVID-19 after being infected, and this hasn’t been conclusively done yet. Instead, it got reported as if the WHO has concluded that people don’t get immunity to COVID-19 after infection and we’re far more seriously fucked than we thought.

Understanding the logic to scientific conclusions (and lack thereof) can be tricky, especially for people without a scientific background. And a lot of people can’t deal well with probabilities at all.

Yesterday, one of my coworkers posted on her Facebook a video of two Bakersfield doctors at a press conference claiming, based on their ~5,300 tests, that California has 5 million people infected with coronavirus and the state should fully open up. I can’t find the video but here’s the story from their local fishwrap:

bakersfield.com

I love Lisa, she keeps me sane at work, but I just couldn’t let this pass, so I posted something like, “uhm, you can’t extrapolate ~5,300 tests in Bakersfield done at a couple of urgent cares to the entire state. I’m not a scientist, but this is bad science.”

Thankfully, some of her other friends agreed with me, but she does have some kook friends.

I’d note that other doctors in Bakersfield, including actual infectious disease specialists, chimed in and “we’re all “aw hell naw” on reopening.”

Apparently this video is flying around in cloud-cuckoo land, so hopefully this information will help someone who has to deal with this kind of crazy.

Unless you want to follow strict medical protocols for donning and doffing gloves, there’s no good reason I can see for wearing nitrile gloves to places like supermarkets. They’re mostly vehicles for transporting contaminants from one surface to another unless you’re prepared to REALLY use them right - which means careful removal, disposal and replacement between each potential contact with a contaminant.

Otherwise, they’re probably more harmful than helpful.

Just wash your hands carefully when you get back from the store and don’t touch your face.

I don’t change gloves between each contaminant, as each item at the grocery store is a potential contaminant. I change gloves between locations;

Exit car to go into store, put on gloves.

Shop.

On the way out, use sanitizer on gloves (20 seconds like washing your hands… Wash those gloves). Put groceries in car. Take cart back and sanitize gloves again. Remove gloves.

Repeat if going somewhere else.

Never cross contaminate by wearing gloves and then touching the cabin of your car before removing the gloves.

And if need be, do what I do… Internal mantra on repeat: don’t touch your face, don’t touch your face…. Until you’re back home, contaminated clothes in the laundry, hands washed, deep breath that your survived the moment.

Lots of people have an interest in equating ecological advocacy with fascism, just like they want to connect being opposed to fascism to being a member of antifa, or supporting women’s rights with feminaziism. And gays with pedophilia.

Remember what happened with the Boy Scouts, who banned gay members for fears that they would spread the ghey disease of pederasty?

Y’all probably remember the bombshell article from Friday regarding how “bishop” Mark Grenon of the “Genesis II Church of Health and Healing” aka purveyor of industrial bleach was sending letters to Donald Trump about how bleach could get rid of coronavirus.

theguardian.com

Well, the Guardian missed this action, from April 8 to April 17:

* Wednesday, April 8: The FDA sends Grenon a letter telling him to cease and desist selling “Miracle Mineral Solution”. fda.gov

* Friday, April 17: The Justice Departnment, on behalf of the FDA, files a complaint (justice.gov) for a preliminary and permanent injunction. To back up their complaint, the DoJ also files an extensive ex parte motion (justice.gov).

* Friday, April 17: A sealed temporary injunction is granted (justice.gov)

Then, per the Guardian:

* Sometime between Monday, April 20 and Thursday, April 23: Mark Grenon writes to Trump.

* Thursday, April 23: Donald Trump goes off on disinfectants at his press conference, leading to all sorts of crazy.

Coming up on Friday, May 1, there will be a hearing on whether to make the temporary restraining order preliminary, which is a step on the road to making it permanent.

I suspect (now I could be wrong here, really wrong), but I believe Grenon wrote Trump because he was in bad legal hot water and wanted to be bailed out by the stupidest man to ever hold the office of President. Trump actually read this horseshit because Grenon is a GOP donor. Again, I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.

Trump-supporting protesters are wearing handmaid’s outfits - do they not see the irony? (The Guardian)

(with photographs)

The shapeless scarlet cloaks and oversized white bonnets have become a familiar sight at protests around the world. From pro-choice demonstrations in Belfast to women’s rights marches in Buenos Aires, the clothes worn by Margaret Atwood’s handmaids in her dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale have become a striking symbol of female defiance.

Now it seems the handmaid’s uniform has taken on a newly dystopian dimension: the outfit has been appropriated by Trump-supporting protesters at the anti-quarantine rallies that have been spreading across America. These rallies, orchestrated by a network of far right and extremist groups, have also seen rightwingers hold up signs with pro-choice slogans like “my body, my choice”.

Conspiracy Theory Time!
“Many people are saying” that many of these patients STARVED TO DEATH while intubated because the medical staff were too overwhelmed and forgot to install nutrition tubes.

Is this bit snark? Nothing relating to this appears in the linked CNN article.

Which, after reading, doesn’t really contain much in the way of new revelations: Northwell’s data* (which, presumably can be applicable to most other major healthcare complexes in the NY area) seems to just confirm the percentages which have been generally accepted as the “norm” for the pandemic: out of *all* COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital: about 20% will have it bad enough to require a ventilator, and about 5% of them, overall, will die.

It unfortunately also seems confirm the suspicions that healthcare professionals have been fearing for quite a while: that the symptomality of SARS-CoV-2 is both unpredictable and (as yet) poorly charted: and that a HUGE amount of work still needs to be done to get a handle on this pandemic. So what else is new….?

*data only to April 4 (three weeks ago now): though I think it’s doubtful the percentages (if not actual numbers) will change much (?)

Rightwingconspirator  Apr 26, 2020 • 8:05:59am

I friend who is trained in statistics has been in touch for some interesting speculative calculations.

If we suppose the infection rate including asymptomatics is 5 percent in LA, ten million people then 500,000 have been exposed.

If we posit a .25% fatality rate given all the asymptomatics, then deaths would be about 1250. Actually 895.

Okay 895 fatalities, extrapolating the rate would mean 358,000 infected.

So maybe that’s a realistic range of infected people here.

OFFS, indeed. This is astonishingly stupid, even by Tom Cotton standards (I.e. abyssal). Not just the facile bigoted xenophobia (which is about all we can expect from GOPers), but the notion that “China” will “steal””our””science” for a CV vaccine? As if the Chinese are all going to rely on herbs, acupuncture and astrology to treat a pandemic until they can pirate “real” ( I.e. white-people) science to cure it?

Wife has rejoined the baking cult. This morning’s success was (homegrown) zucchini/chocolate bread.

She has tried 2 runs of Southern Shiksa challah. It’s getting better, but does not get the shiny egg crust of VB’s. She asks for guidance.

Don’t ask me. Those came out of a cam CAN :-) And when I do make bread, it comes out of a box right into my bread maker. That reminds me, I have a box a Hawaiian sweet bread mix in the pantry.

She was fully aware of the context. Perhaps she figures that if she gets the sack, somebody even more craven and idiotically dangerous will take her place…

Al Franken had a medical expert (can’t remember her name) on his podcast a couple of weeks ago and he asked her about this. She said, “when I was health commissioner for Baltimore I had a mayor who publicly said that people who OD basically get what they deserve, but cutting the number of OD deaths was my top priority; if I had publicly contradicted her I would never get her support, so I had to smile and nod and work behind the scenes to get the mayor to my point of view.” In other words, she thought Birx and Fauci are being very careful so that they can do what they can behind the scenes.

It bothers me she went on television to defend him.

She was awarded the military Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct. That award is almost never given to someone below flag rank or senior foreign civilian and military leaders.

She dishonours herself by doing this.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” (Obviously doesn’t apply to her because she’s a woman. /s)

She did worse than nothing. She defended evil. Stonekettle is right in his observation, and so is Rick Wilson with “everything Trump touches dies.”

Even if you believe that some “good” is being done by Dr. Birx behind the scenes, she is allowing a lot of bad to happen by her refusal to speak up.

And honestly, by this point, I think that’s more wishful thinking that anything else. Why? Because every time we’ve seen this play out, where we interpreted someone’s actions as playing along in order to be the “adult” in the room, we’ve discovered that they were willful participants whose biggest worry at the end of the day was not controlling the man’s worst impulses…but avoiding the shame of being fired via tweet.

Chester County, PA COVID-19 stats as of yesterday.

Confirmed cases: 1217 (+43)
Total tests: 5973 (+185)
Deaths: 82 (+0)

48 of the deaths occurred in just three of the townships/boroughs. Three boroughs and two townships still without any reported cases. Three townships with just over 1/2 of 1% of their population as confirmed cases.

Total tests still indicate that this is just spot testing and not something trying to find how widely the virus is actually spread in the county. Doubling rate of confirmed cases is 13 days currently, which indicates flattening is going on.

New numbers from Minnesota: 2390 new tests, down from Friday’s, but it’s a weekend and everybody was probably headed to the lake (bringing us to 58987, now 1% of the MN population); 156 new cases, correspondingly down (and the percentage of new positives is also down, from ~10% to ~6%), bringing us to 3602; 28 dead, up to 272. Four straight days sustaining over 2000 tests/day is progress, especially with one of them being a weekend day. Tomorrow’s numbers will be telling because Sunday has historically been the slowest day for testing.

He’s in the process of suing HuffPo for “libel.” Says they wrongly labeled him a white supremacist…and is using his own child in a “some of my best friends are black” argument.

That reminds me - there’s some news on that. Post coming soon.

Oh. Oh, that’s a name I certainly recognize. So she’s a big fish.

Lee Weissman sent me a lovely “MAZAL TOV” and now I am getting hate Tweets and threats from “body integrity activists” Muted, blocked & reported. I think because Lee used the “c” word and these folks search by keyword looking for folks to harass.
Lee is a great Twitter follow, recommended here by CL

One new case in the Nebraska Panhandle. A man in his forties tested positive yesterday in Scott’s Bluff County. That brings the total confirmed to 27 there.

Tested: 899
Confirmed: 44 (+1)
Recovered: 26
Largest age group: 40-49 (13, +1 since yesterday)
Second-largest age group: 60-69 (8)

Which brings up a different issue, thinking ahead to agriculture and coronavirus.

Ricketts establishes detasseling safety task force (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Nebraska state officials have announced the creation of a detasseling task force to protect workers from becoming ill with the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

“Detasseling is a part of our culture here in Nebraska,” Gov. Pete Ricketts said Thursday during his daily press briefing.

About 7,000 people participate in detasseling every year in Nebraska, said Steve Wellman, director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

(more at the link if you are interested in the fascinating profession of detasseling, a necessary job for corn growers)

That was lovely. The fact that you are getting hate tweets is awful. There are too many ignorant people in the world today.

Really interesting string here. These two are urgent care fast-food docs and one of them isn’t certified in emergency medicine. Their employer is involved in a privatization trial for the VA that was brokered by none other than Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who has opposed the lockdown from the beginning. They are also anti-vaxxers.

I find it amazing you have forty-five grandchildren.

That would be 1/3 of my whole town.

I’m happy you got to participate in the Zoom conference.

This all reminds me of General Francisco Franco — who spent weeks in a coma before dying. But he did have an official successor; he had restored the monarchy before his death, and the king succeeded him.

Used to be a luxury car commercial that showed the smooth ride by cutting a diamond while underway. There was a version that featured a mobile bris, but that was probably a half-remembered send-up.

It was a 1970’s SNL spoof ad.
