She’s been falsely accused of starting the Pandemic. Her life has been turned upside down.

Conspiracy theories are not dissimilar to viruses, in that they evolve and mutate to spread and survive. Before Maatje Benassi became the main protagonist in this conspiracy, variations had circulated online for months.

In the early weeks of the coronavirus, conspiracy theorists began claiming, without evidence, that it was a US biological weapon. Later one member of the Chinese government publicly promoted the notion that the US military brought the virus to China. US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said it was “completely ridiculous and it’s irresponsible” for someone speaking on behalf of the Chinese government to promote such a claim.

It wasn’t until March, months after the first reported coronavirus cases in China, that conspiracy theorists turned their focus to Maatje Benassi. The baseless theory began with her participation in October in the Military World Games, essentially the military Olympics, which was hosted by Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus outbreak began last year.

Maatje Benassi competed in the cycling competition there, suffering an accident on the final lap that left her with a fractured rib and a concussion. Despite the crash, Benassi still finished the race, but it turned out to be the start of something worse. While hundreds of athletes from the US military took part in the games, Maatje Benassi was plucked out of the group and given a starring role in the conspiracy theory.

Perhaps the most prominent cheerleader of the idea that Benassi had a role in the imaginary plot to infect the world is George Webb, a prolific 59-year-old American misinformation peddler. Webb has for years regularly streamed hours of diatribe live on YouTube, where he has amassed more than 27 million views and almost 100,000 followers.

In 2017, CNN revealed how Webb was part of a trio of conspiracy theorists that pushed a false rumor about a cargo ship with a “dirty bomb” that was set to arrive at the Port of Charleston in South Carolina. The bomb never materialized, but the claims did lead to parts of the port — one of the biggest in America — being shut down for a time as a safety precaution.

I strongly recommend reading the whole thing. These people are crazy and reckless. They endanger and destroy the lives of others and do not give a shit. Fuck every last one of them.

I could swear that’s highly similar to the plot of a made-for-TV movie broadcast back in the 1980s. I remember watching it as a kid - the only real difference was that in the TV movie, some terrorists had gotten hold of an actual nuke, and while military bomb-disposal experts were trying to defuse it, the nuke went off. If my memory serves my right, the Port of Charleston was the setting of this TV movie.

And now, here’s the Huffington Post with a really bad take on the rape allegation against Joe Biden.

They talked to 15 survivors of sexual assault who said it sounded credible. I’m not making light of what the survivors went though, but these people had nothing to do with this specific case, and they have no personal knowledge about it. They’re entitled to their opinions, but that’s all they are: opinions. Casting this as some kind of damning revelation is bullshit.

- was it ‘sexual assault’

So, I’m wondering who got my order of paper towels from Walmart, that FedEx delivered today.
I know I didn’t

It seems that the USPS, FedEx and Prime delivery all seem incapable of actually delivering packages to my damn address

At 12:59 AM this morning, a package bearing the exact same FedEx tracking number of my previously “delivered” package materialized at a Jacksonville FedEx facility. The previously “delivered” package bearing said tracking number is still listed on FedEx’s tracking site, as delivered. At 2 AM this package was loaded on a FedEx vehicle for delivery. At 12:40 PM this apparent doppelganger package was deposited at my door, containing all the items I had ordered.

I can only conclude that my ever growing annoyance yesterday evening somehow conjured my wayward package to somehow transport itself back to the Jacksonville FedEx facility, to reenter the delivery system.

It’s a BS narrative because every investigation that has been done into the rape allegation has found zero credibility to the story - between timetables that don’t match up with known facts, also, the individuals at the forefront of the accusations are known for fabricated stories.

Add the fact that Donald Trump, who has openly admitted to multiple occasions of sexual assault (some of whom were well under the age of consent) is pushing this narrative is absolutely stomach-turning.

re: #12 Hecuba’s daughter

The Burisma allegation failed so Putin needed a new one to help out his BFF Trump.

unfortunately none of these stories are corroboration or confirmation.

so whether it’s ultimately ‘true’ or even ‘provable’, here’s where we are:

- trump is a self admitted p***y grabber and has created the new standard - like it or not
- if the public does eventually ‘believe’ Reade, trump’s very presence may dull what would likely in other times be a biden political downfall
- it will be quite the stunt to disqualify one candidate (not proven) and not the other (admitted)

as to the election, it’s a binary choice, again like it or don’t.
There is no ‘other’ or none of the above.
Biden is not dropping out, there are no substitutions.

if you dont vote for B, you ARE helping T win.

if your concern is women’s rights, then to be totally cold and calculating about it:

- 4 more years of ‘moved on her like a bitch’ plus 2 more Kavanaughs on the SCOTUS for 3 to 4 decades
or
- Biden and a female VP

Chester County, PA COVID-19 stats as of yesterday.
Confirmed cases: 1251 (+34)
Tests done: 6146 (+173)
Deaths: 81 (-1)

Second time in a week that the death count has adjusted downward. Doubling rate is approximately 13 days. Percentage of population within the various townships that are confirmed seems to be creeping up across the board, but a bit faster in the townships that started off with more cases. (Which includes a bunch near my apartment.)

I though it was curious (not!) that once they said Trump was cutting back on pandemic briefing appearances that they immediately opted to cancel it. But, lo and behold, there will be a press event anyways today.

I guess something popped up in the news media or on TV over the weekend that he needs to cry about before the cameras. Perhaps followed by dealing out some direct abuse on reporters.

Bernie dropped out, so that’s not the problem here. The problem is that people will likely ignore the down ballot races.

This will have little impact for November presidential race though, since the states control the election process, not the feds. The solution is also to demand mail in ballots and that states move to mail in ballots, which would solve the covid19 social distancing issue, address the problems of having an election day that isn’t a holiday, that makes ability to vote easier, and has a paper trail.

9 main batteries?! 27 main guns? Iowa class ships had 3 turrets and 9 main guns total.

And two flight decks? That’s glorious and insane. And something the Japanese might have entertained if they had the time.

The closest the US had was the Lexington and Saratoga, which retained the cruiser big guns when they were converted to carriers. 4x2 8 inch guns.

This thing looks like it had Yamato sized guns.

Apparently, it’s from a Japanese novel: the dimensions of this fictitious vessel are 582 meters long with a width of 97 meters. It weighs about 384,200 tons empty but at a whopping 492,600 tons at full loadout. It has an engine power of 608,000 horsepower which allows it to cruise with a maximum speed of 29 knots.

The modeller used a familiar Yamato kit for the hull and several Zuikaku models to make its flight deck plus other components from Yamato and Musashi models. Nice work, I have to say.

order online? I haven’t gone to a store to buy shoes in years. Amazon or zappos work fine. In general I know what brands and sizes I like, but if there is a problem they both have very liberal return policies.

You know the worst thing about all these states deciding to fling the doors open to ‘unleash the economy’? It basically means that all the work done by the other states to actually bend the curve will very likely be completely undone, because without strict controls of who goes in and out of state, people from states these assholes have volunteered as new infection hotspots can very likely come in and start new waves in the other states because fuck all.

These assholes are ensuring that this first wave never crests, just respikes anew before the curve even bends. And cities can’t do shit because the states are saying ‘fuck you, this is a death pact’.

A new memo issued Monday by Attorney General Bill Barr told federal prosecutors nationwide to “be on the lookout” for COVID-19 public health measures that “could be violating the constitutional rights and civil liberties of individual citizens.”

Barr’s memo alluded to the disputes have arisen between churches and government officials who have shut down religious gatherings due to the pandemic. But he added that the “legal restrictions on state and local authority are not limited to discrimination against religious institutions and religious believer

(…)

As a Reuters reporters pointed out, the memo did not mention abortion rights, which has also become a flashpoint as states like Texas and Alabama have sought to impose restrictions on the procedure, ostensibly because of the pandemic. Nor did it mention voting rights, another subject that has prompted legal battles across the country related to the outbreak.

They don’t care if the country ends up a virus-stricken wasteland quarantined from the rest of the world, long as they get to rule over it with an infinite iron fist.

An excellent TV movie. The format, like the original War of the Worlds, was to make it as if this were real news coverage.

And because we’re the U.S., the network had to add a disclaimer at the end of every commercial break, and a crawl on screen throughout, that THIS IS NOT REAL IT’S A TV DRAMATIZATION IT ISN’T REALLY HAPPENING

Some day some harmless looking little old lady is going to walk up to a clump of them, draw an SA pistol from her purse and shoot them in the head in less time than it takes the final one to react and raise his weapon. Of course they have the moral high ground. They’re Republicans. That means they will always be assumed to have the moral high ground even when proven hypocritical. And even when Dems show consistent moral leadership, Republicans will just be doubly afforded the moral high ground, because nothing the Dems do will ever save them from being illegitimate usurpers of the rightful rule of Republicans.

Meanwhile, California bay counties have extended the shutdown through the end of May.

As they should. The UW IHME model’s optimistic earliest date for California to even begin to think about opening up with strict containment and testing procedures in place *was* May 18, but we are slipping behind the curve on that a bit. Likely due to the Branch Covidians and the League of Orange County Karens.

Most states are “reopening” before they have even peaked, weeks or months before IHME model estimates. We. Are. Governed. By. Fucking. Idiots.

Can we ban travel into CA, OR, and WA from the rest of the country until March 2021 unless people get tested to come in? /onlypartialsarc

183
calochortus  Apr 27, 2020 • 2:47:24pm

Color me unsurprised that the Bay Area counties have extended the lockup until the end of May. Also, since CA as a whole is locked up without an end date, I’m not sure what good it would do to turn us loose on a county basis until the state ends it. Newsom is teasing us again with “tomorrow I’ll talk more about loosening restrictions if we meet X goal.”

I was just telling my daughter that for myself I’m relatively unconcerned about official restrictions as loosening them will allow me a bit more freedom in shopping, etc. but most hobby-type meetings won’t start back up for a while regardless. The restriction that really matters, is when the family can get together in person. She is the gatekeeper there (as mother of our granddaughter, and importantly, a doctor, who can presumably make a rational decision about safety.)
Now, for the sake of people who are out of work, or the next door neighbors who were less than 2 weeks away from being able to move back into their new house when construction had to stop, naturally things getting back to some sort of normalcy is important.

184
Eclectic Cyborg  Apr 27, 2020 • 2:47:57pm

For the record, more Americans have now died of Covid-19 than in any armed conflict save the American Civil War and both World Wars.

And there’s a good chance we could be past WWI numbers (roughly 116 000 dead) by the time this is over.

And it didn’t have to be this way.

Grocery store update:

Went midday; this store supposedly gets Sunday night (Monday early morning) deliveries, so I was hoping things were stocked up.

Water aisle: mostly fully stocked.
Soup and pasta aisle: barren still, been that way for awhile. Instant noodle shelves are completely empty and have been for a while. I chalk this up to the loss of fast food so people now have to find a way to make food themselves.
Condiments: mostly full but vinegar is scare.
Dairy: the one department that seems to be keeping up, mostly. Butter is finally available everyday, as is yoghurt.
Bakery: keeping up, mostly.
Candy aisle: full, of course. The one thing not in short supply in America is sugar.

And of course…
Paper aisle: as barren as the Moon.

Also not been seen in weeks is hydrogen peroxide (as a separate item). Bleach too, though it drops in for a visit on occasion.

This “new normal” is beginning to look like those old stereotypes of life in the USSR.

DoD comes out with evidence that UFOs may be real…on the same day that Donny once again proves there’s no intelligent life to find on this planet.

UFOs are real. “Unidentified Flying Objects”.

That they are alien spacecraft is pretty much over there in woo land.

The fact that there are a bunch of tests out there that are of dubious quality means that people taking them will get false negatives and false positives - dangerous in both directions.

Trump’s failures continue to pile up like cordwood.

Failure??? This is how free market capitalism handles a pandemic. It must therefore be a success.

George R.R. is working on it. The book should be out…eventually.

He’s stuck at home. What the frak is he doing other than not working on the rest of the books and learning from the mistakes made with the show? Sheesh.

There has been so much unnecessary death in this country. It could have been stopped and it could have been stopped short, but somebody a long time ago, it seems, decided not to do it that way. And the whole world is suffering because of it.”

Amazing a guy who works soooo hard and is responsible for nothing

The Kansas Poison Control Center reported an increase of more than 40% in cleaning chemical cases, days after President Trump suggested that household disinfectants could be injected “almost as a cleaning,” the Topeka Capital Journal reports.

When asked if he takes any responsibility for the spike in such calls, CNN reports Trump answered: “No, I don’t.”

There’s a wonderful Japanese TV show where they try to respond to viewers’ suggestions or weird requests (it’s Osaka based). In a recent one a guy asked the show to help him see if his giant-sized models of famous Japanese battleships and aircraft carriers would actually float in the sea. The attention to detail was amazing. I’ll see if I can find the link on youtube. Spoiler: they floated well in calm waters.

I’m just getting the gist of Dutch, but from what little I’ve read on Dutch politics, the horseshoe theory is in full effect; there is a right wing, and a kind of Bible Belt in the Low Countries. I can easily believe that leftists in Amsterdam koffieshops and old boers in Hilversum are equally opposed to 5G.

Yeah maybe beer would sell more if they dropped the price. The whole market is crooked. It is cheaper to buy bottled beer than it is to buy it by the barrel.

You need to check your math. I have never purchased a full barrel, but a 1/4 and 1/2 are both far more economical than buying bottles/cans.

There are about 7 cases per 1/2 barrel. If you are talking about something like Guinness you can save about $70 vs buying cases.
