Technically, it’s his QAnon lawyer who is trying to get his guilty plea voided because she insists:

- The FBI is corrupt and was under orders from Obama to destroy Flynn as a means at getting to Trump, when they were supposed to follow the “An undercover cop has to let you know they’re a cop, otherwise it’s entrapment” legal theory

- The prosecutors had exculpatory evidence that would have proven the conspiracy but was withheld in violation of his rights, leaving him with no way to challenge the charges against him

- His (former) attorneys were also part of the conspiracy, failing to tell him they had a conflict of interest as they were pushing him to accept the guilty plea and not to fight the charges

- The first judge assigned knew all this and that was the reason for the case being moved to a new judge…even though they also think the new judge is allowing Flynn to be railroaded instead of putting the government on trial for “prosecutorial misconduct” and violating Flynn’s rights

This all seems to be part of a scheme to get Trump to believe that he was fooled into firing Flynn by the “deep state,” and that Flynn was always a loyal soldier to his Don. And so far, it seems to be working because Powell has learned to utilize the best asset when wanting to make a case to Trump: Going on Faux to plead the “innocence” of her client.

So Indiana’s governor has announced that we’re going to move to “stage 2” of his five-step reopening program next Monday.

Today, we had 795 (or 815 depending whose meter you’re tracking) new cases, the second-highest new case total day Indiana has had so far. The day that the lockdown order went in place, there were 100 new cases. So we’ll start the doubling again, only this time three doubling cycles higher than we were.

He apparently thinks that a slight downwards trend in hospitalizations (maybe 15 percent over the last month, almost flat over the last two weeks) is sufficient rationale to start sending people back out into the public spaces. https://www.regenstrief.org/covid-dashboard/ Nifty site for some of the hospital stats in Indiana. ER visits are slightly UP, ICU admits are arguably slightly down.

Sure, this first step is supposed to be incremental, but the lockdown here was wishy-washy at best - I saw a lawnmower repair company that declared itself to be essential, and got away with it - and I’m pretty damn sure that the goddamn anarchists are going to lean hard on everyone around us.

Seriously, why is it too fucking hard for professional Republicans to read graphs? I don’t expect the anarchists to even look at numbers but for that asshole to say this is good data driven policy is an insult to good governance.

The governor here has reopened retail businesses for curbside delivery starting today - but that’s with the knowledge that we are approaching his goal of 5000 tests per day at which point he said he would start reopening the state. So far, the MDH and the private sector have begun delivering on their promises, and so the governor is responding in kind.

Illinois is still climbing. My county (tiny, 5000 people) has no reported cases. Next county up to 14, but still only the one death from right at the beginning. IL is seeing the cases slowly move out into the rural areas. Chicago is the main driver, of course. Just like NYC.

Hey, here in SC, Foghorn Leghorn (our charming governor) has really loosened the reins—the beaches are open, stores are open, hotels are a go, restaurants can do outdoor seating;

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, who issued a local stay-home order before the governor’s office, was skeptical of the governor’s move and encouraged people to continue to follow public health advice driven by data.

But the Chamber peeps are delighted—Ted Pitts, the CEO of the SC Chamber of Commerce, praised McMaster’s decision.

Of this I’m sure: some archivist at that institution is in for six or eight months of complete hell. Good luck to him or her.

I will also guarantee this: If the folks at the University of Delaware do as Marcus asks, and they find nothing, that will satisfy nobody. Once this kind of story gets rolling, there’s always supposed to be another memo, another email, another billing record. The argument that answering “legitimate questions” will put anything like this to rest has been refuted, time and time again, since at least the pursuit of the Whitewater affair in the early 1990s. Indeed, on Friday, writing about the situation, The New York Times’s media correspondent sought out for quotation Juanita Broaddrick, who accused Bill Clinton of raping her. The name “Donald Trump” appears nowhere in the article, and the central point that somehow the media was too soft on Clinton sounds hallucinatory to anyone who lived through it.

I have no doubt that this story is now part of the campaign narrative, especially since there is no apparent actual campaign going on due to the pandemic. How crucial it will be is completely up in the air, because everything about this election has been blown to shrapnel by the pandemic, which likely will be the only real issue driving any election for the foreseeable future. Nothing is solid in our politics anymore.

The felines are happy campers this evening.

My neighbor was cleaning up around her small patio and opted to pull a catnip plant that had gotten a good start on the spring and was already 2’ tall with a lot of leaves but no blooms yet. So I got it.

Been drying rinsed off leaves in the oven for the past few hours and the whole apartment smells like catnip. A couple of stalks went into a vase with water and Fat Cat has been chewing a leaf off of there now and then. And Chat Noir found where I had rinsed leaves drying on paper towels before they went into the oven and helped himself there. Tuxedo Cat was given some shredded fresh leaves so she wouldn’t feel left out.

And I’ll pass a baggie of the dried leaves off to my other neighbor so that the Neighbor Cats benefit from this largess as well.

I do not recommend Samsung French-door style fridges unless they’ve made a design change that reduces the chances of ice build-up that blocks the fan and lets your fridge get nice and warm! But slowly! Over months! So you don’t notice until the milk goes bad repeatedly!

Anyway, if you do happen to have one of these fridges and need advice on how to work your way through the defrosting process and (hopefully) prevent it from happening again, well I’ve got plenty of resources to share now.

(Fridge has gotten below 40 degrees today for what is probably the first time in months. And most of what was lost was due to get cleaned out anyway. Saved the freezer contents. Fuck this week.)

Last month I had to replace the defrost thermostat on my Roper. It was doing the repeated frost buildup. (There are vids on YT.) The part costs $11.00, took an hour, if you can find where it goes. That is the most common failure, followed by the defrost timer. Worked my way through school on a GE reefer assembly line.

There was some unpleasantness over a washer and dryer, but they were allowing me to wash my clothes at their house, and I think I may have overdone the load limit a time or three. Anyway, they got new ones. When they died, my husband and I moved to this house because it was on one level, and all appliances are still on go.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend doing it unless you have to. (I had visible ice coming out of the vents in the “Twin Cooling” panel in the back of the fridge.)

Easy way: you can trigger a manual defrost of the fridge compartment by pressing the “fridge” plus “eco mode” buttons for ~10 seconds to enter the factory menu. Should make two beeps and give you a blank screen. Press the fridge button a few times to get “rD” to displace - this starts a defrost of the fridge compartment. Runs for about 20-30 minutes, will beep every 10 seconds or so while it does it. Plus side: you don’t have to take the food out. Downside: it beeps every 10 seconds or so.

Hard way: All the food out. All the shelves out. I had to get a screwdriver involved to pop the center shelf out. Google to see if you can find the service manual for your specific model - I was lucky and found mine. There’s also a lot of videos on Youtube - this is a good general example.

Fixing Samsung Fridge Ice Buildup and Leaking Water under Crisper Tray

I did NOT use a hair dryer because by all accounts the plastic is pretty thin and melts easily. We put bowls of boiling hot water in the fridge and shut the door and also taped a heating pad to the back. Not sure if that helped a lot but probably about 6 hours from start of the process until the ice had defrosted enough to finally remove the back panel. Once I could take that off I was able to apply hot water directly to the ice on the fan and get that to melt, and I actually unscrewed the plastic around the fan to make sure I got all the ice out from there. Also ran hot water through the drain area a bunch until it finally started draining, because it had also frozen up. I did not run wire down the drain like several videos suggest but that was more due to lack of wire on hand. Set up fans to get all the components nice and dry afterwards.

My best guess is that the icing happened on the copper refrigerant lines seen at the top right in the fridge, above the coils. That’s certainly where it was the thickest. I bought some pipe insulation tape during a trip to Home Depot on Tuesday in preparation and have wrapped them both to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Then put the fridge carefully back together. Take the time to clean the bloody shelves because you’ve got the whole fucking thing taken apart anyway. Pray that it works again. Sing praises when it starts cooling.

Start to finish the process was probably a good 8-9 hours yesterday. I spent at least an hour discovering I could probably fit inside the fridge with all the shelves removed if I needed to.

It’s Samsung so it was covered in plastic and then some …melted goo plastic mess that matched what I’d seen in other people’s photos.

It’s also on the inflow instead of the outflow which is apparently not the normal way to do things but hahaha Samsung.

If it had been easy to shift it I would have while I had the thing open but the mess kind of deterred that on this attempt. I think it’s likely we’ll replace this fridge in the next year, especially if it happens again (which seems likely, unfortunately, based on other people’s experiences) but we were trying to avoid having an emergency replacement done while under shelter in place. I do have a few candidates to look up for potential replacements though.

Mainly, this is a political weapon being pushed by hyperpoliticized people for whom objective truth is irrelevant or doesn’t actually exist. To believe that about truth, you either need to be seriously privileged or insane, and probably both.

What complicates this is that it’s a Bernie dead-ender thing, not a Republican thing. A couple of days ago Trump spouted off a bit about the Reade accusations: from a political perspective, he should have just shrugged and kept out of it. Instead, he lurched right into “false accusations, I know all about that”, because of course it has to be about Trump. So the Republicans are going to have a problem running with this if the yam keeps cutting it off at the knees.

The hyperpoliticization is why Trump and the MAGAts think they’ve won when states “open up.” Since it got twisted in their minds into a completely political us-versus-them like everything else in the past three years, they figure that as soon as they’ve won the political battle it’s over. The fact that little balls of proteins and fats don’t give a shit about media coverage and political leverage means that the viruses will just do their thing with all the new hosts and the disease spread will get worse.

Wingnuts don’t think that #MeToo has gone too far, they think the very existence of it is evidence that feminism has gone too far. Canned Ass made that pretty apparent in her tweet, they view the apparent “failure” of the movement as indicative that feminism has “failed.” And it’s not simply about Kavanaugh (it most is), it’s also about Bill Cosby and Jeff Epstein and other prominent conservative men who have either been brought down by the movement or can attribute their downfall to it. It’s part of the greater “cultural war,” a war that the wingnuts believe they are losing and which Trump’s presidency was supposed to turn in their favor.

The other reason is pretty familiar: wingnut grievance culture, the nursing of grudges for years or even decades against anybody and everybody. Even if they ultimately “won” and got Kavanaugh on the bench, they still nurse a grudge that he was ever “attacked” in the first place by Senate Dems. A powerful man was not only questioned about his fitness to serve, but the very idea that being a man was in some way “wrong” set them off. So even if they fail to stop Biden, they will still consider it a “victory” because they will believe that the entire #MeToo movement has been judged by Biden’s opponents as having “failed.”

All the morons on social media talking about how they had to have their guns because they might have to fight off “looters” who were gonna come for their supplies when social order began to break down.

They got wood at the fantasies about shooting black “looters” trying to break into their homes, only to end up with post-apocalypse blue balls when they realized the only thing in short supply was TP.

Assuming the local butcher has a spare set of equipment to process game and is operating legally.

Aside: In PA processing deer during hunting season was something you did yourself (like a friend of mine’s father), or paid someone to do it. A few butchers also processed deer, but could not use their regular equipment to do so since the deer carcass was not inspected meat, etc. etc. (which made a lot of sense.) And from an economic standpoint getting meat from a decent-sized doe worked out to about $3-4/lb after you took into account the hunting license, doe tag, processing cost, etc. etc.

aren’t there thousands of butcher shops who do this as a major part of their business every year? isn’t this the reason people buy that extra freezer they keep in the garage?

My dad only went deer hunting twice in his life (one of the orthopedists at his hospital grew up in West Virginia, he led the group)… Mom wouldn’t let him bring home the mounted head, but he did come back with a cardboard box full of football-sized pieces wrapped in butcher paper.

Plenty who did. And you’d find them with a tent in back of the store with the extra butcher table and deer carcasses hanging there plus more stacked nearby. Plus there were people who just had the equipment, were probably not commercial butchers, and would process as well. (I guess they might have done local farm butchering as well, but never used one.)

I deer hunted a bit with a friend’s family in central-western PA for a number of years in the 90s. I got a buck once, and the skull/skin combo sat in a freezer for a year before I had it mounted. We weren’t trophy hunting as much as meat hunting, since the doe tags were rather prized due to the does generally being better eating.

That buck was one of the larger ones we got in that area until my friend’s father got a 10-point in the early 2000s. Comparatively smaller compared to the monsters up near where my brother lives in western NY. Difference between white-tails living in a river valley and eating a farmer’s corn (his) and white-tails living in former strip mine spill piles that have been partially remediated and living on stuff like pine browse.

Elk hunting in PA is limited to two locations, just a few licenses given out per year, and has more stringent regulations than deer hunting. Which, IIRC, includes having enough people with you to pack out the meat you’re expected to have if you get one. (You’re not allowed to take vehicles into the game lands where the elk reside.)

I got moose once at a picnic where one of the participants had gone to Canada to hunt one and ending up packing out multiple hundreds of pounds of meat. It tastes like lean beef. (Isn’t there an Alaska bumper sticker: “Eat Moose. 10,000 wolves can’t be wrong.”)

It’s done at “deer processing stations”, 1-2 man operations in concrete-block buildings all over the place. Our deer are fairly small, but over-plentiful. The hunts have generous annual bags, basically humanitarian hunting. A wasting disease is working its way down from TN, and could bring all this to an end.

Pretty similar to the PA game laws. Elk, as compared to white-tailed deer, is more restricted since they are not in PA in any large number and the license/tags for them are given out by lottery. A PA hunting license *is* essentially all you need to shoot a buck deer. The doe tags are controlled by game district and the primary method by which the DER attempts to control the deer population in the state. (And a few times they’ve issued unlimited doe tags for bow hunters in a few areas since those areas were getting overrun by deer and were highly populated counties with few/no opportunities to gun hunt in.)

Another difference you’ll see here and there is districts where you can’t hunt with rifles, but must use shotguns. My brother’s area in NY state is one - the hunters there are either using compound bows, or shotguns firing “pumpkinballs” which is essentially a .30 bullet in a sabot of a diameter to fit the shotgun. (Buckshot prohibited.) And for years in PA crossbow usage was prohibited as well.

CWD is a known factor in the PA deer populations. I have not read up on the spread there recently, but I think it had gotten into the areas I used to hunt in. (Would have to check with someone to verify.)

Here getting an elk license mostly involves applying for it at the public library. Accredited librarians in Nebraska are trained in accepting hunting licenses. (Gun shops can also issue licenses, but our gun shop owner doesn’t want to fiddle with Internet service because it costs too much.)

The same goes for antelope, deer, turkeys, waterfowl, &c.

The only lottery is for one hunting permit awarded in each district which allows the hunter to hunt one of each of the big game (deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, &c).

We had seven new cases announced here in Rockwall county yesterday. The Rockwall county emergency management site has started breaking out Broadmoor, the long term health facility, out as its own count separate from the city.

If you look at a map of my small county, you will see that from west to east on the map, it goes Rockwall, Fate, and Royse City. Fate had been overperforming for its size, probably for two reasons: most of the people there had to leave in order to work, and they probably didn’t think the rules applied to them.

Now that it’s gone on for a bit, Royse City is starting to catch up. Which means it is spreading out away from Dallas.

Paris, Tx has 64 cases. It has a junior college there, but it seems pretty high for where it is.

There used to be but the deer wasting disease disrupted that. Many places wouldn’t process fresh kills because it could infect their entire operation. Many governments, I believe WI was one, outright banned it.

This was years ago when I still lived in IL but I think many of the regulations hung around for public safety purposes.

We had seven new cases announced here in Rockwall county yesterday. The Rockwall county emergency management site has started breaking out Broadmoor, the long term health facility, out as its own count separate from the city.

If you look at a map of my small county, you will see that from west to east on the map, it goes Rockwall, Fate, and Royse City. Fate had been overperforming for its size, probably for two reasons: most of the people there had to leave in order to work, and they probably didn’t think the rules applied to them.

Now that it’s gone on for a bit, Royse City is starting to catch up. Which means it is spreading out away from Dallas.

Paris, Tx has 64 cases. It has a junior college there, but it seems pretty high for where it is.

47 of the cases were associated to one nursing home, at least 5 days ago that was the number.

I have enjoyed Leberwurst, made in small batches by local butchers, but would not eat the store-bought stuff.

I even had a blood sausage that I enjoyed, at a small cafe in Wales. Turns out that the trick is not to let the blood cool off, that makes it rancid, so the only decent stuff really has to be made in small lots.

I believe the Oxford vaccine that was the first to trial got there so quickly because they were just continuing work on a SARS vaccine that got stalled and the proteins they are targeting are practically the same between SARS and covid19.

I never had our even saw pull liver.

I think my issue with liver (beef) was that it looked really good, nice char on the outside, beautifully cooked onions, and then the first cut, mouth insertion and chew was like WTF IS THIS MOOSHY HOT MESS? I was expecting steak when I got cream of beef.

I can’t recall if I spit it out or not (I was at a friend’s house when I was like 10 years old). I do know it was one bite and done.

Just a WAG, of course: but since this is a Republican-led Committee, I’m gonna guess “grandstanding and bulkshitting”.

To me, this “hearing” seems smells mostly like a cheap PR exercise: a desperate attempt to try to salvage some face for the Admin (and by extension, the GOP) for their horrific failures in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

My guess (and my advice if I were advising Sen. Alexander), is that they are going to softball Dr. Fauci, set him up as the “good guy” ,try to ignore Trump where at all possible, then save their REAL scathing for the Committee Democrats - their real targets - for going after said “good guy” and “politicizing a pandemic”.

New York attempted to do a local isolation first. It failed. From what I remember, California tried to do the same thing at first.

While Cuomo may have started slow, he’s still doing a lot better than other places. I’m afraid that when it spreads into rural areas here in Texas to the point people are unable to find care, Abbott isn’t going to be able to respond properly at all.

A: The fate of his delegates varies on a state-by-state basis, but there would be enough of them that would remain legally pledged to him that no other candidate could claim the nomination at this point (not even Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT). So, we’d be looking at an old-fashioned convention where the nominee is not known until the end. Unless, of course, COVID-19 made holding a convention impossible. Given the fact that neither the SARS nor the MERS pandemics ever produced a vaccine, and given what we know about the current virus’s behaviour, I have a low confidence level that a vaccine for SARS-CoV2 will be produced, with one of the main reasons being that China refuses to release the information on Patient Zero.

Developing a vaccine does not require a Patient Zero, just access to people who have the disease. After all, most vaccines were developed to deal with diseases that plagued humanity for centuries, if not millennia: smallpox, measles, polio etc.

Store proprietor also told me during our chat he got a refund from his car insurance company due to the dramatic drop in claims for liability and collision due to the shutdown.

We haven’t gotten anything like that from our insurance company, but that’s something that might happen.

In three weeks we’ve only gone 17 miles.

I did get a rebate from USAA recently.

I believe the Oxford vaccine that was the first to trial got there so quickly because they were just continuing work on a SARS vaccine that got stalled and the proteins they are targeting are practically the same between SARS and covid19.

Just a WAG, of course: but since this is a Republican-led Committee, I’m gonna guess “grandstanding and bulkshitting”.

To me, this “hearing” seems smells mostly like a cheap PR exercise: a desperate attempt to try to salvage some face for the Admin (and by extension, the GOP) for their horrific failures in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

My guess (and my advice if I were advising Sen. Alexander), is that they are going to softball Dr. Fauci, set him up as the “good guy” ,try to ignore Trump where at all possible, then save their REAL scathing for the Committee Democrats - their real targets - for going after said “good guy” and “politicizing a pandemic”.
And then (not overly-optimistically) hope that the media bothsiders the whole thing, and concentrates mostly on the Ds “politicizing”….

Screw them. Repugs got in plenty of grandstanding and fabulizing during the impeachment hearings in their allotted time, Dems will be able to get their word in no matter what they try. And people will be paying much more attention — or many more people will be paying attention — this time around
