Doesn’t sound like it to me.

“As a young black girl growing up in Mississippi, I learned that if I didn’t speak up for myself, no one else would,” she said on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. “My mission is to say out loud if I’m asked the question, ‘Yes, I would be willing to serve.’”

Interesting. I confused what she actually said, which is she wouldn’t run for the Georgia Senate seat.

Carrots, celery, onions, broccoli, jalapenos, and chicken with fettuccine in a broth thickened with lots of corn starch. It has five spice and garlic for the flavor with fish sauce and sesame oil. Aleppo peppers and a splash of seasoned rice vinegar for the hot and sour. 71/2 minute steamed eggs. Hot chili oil as a topping with parsley because fuck cilantro. A chopped broccoli leaf because it was right there on the cutting board. (Fettuccine instead of ramen because I wanted to see how the Fasta Pasta did with it. It did a good job.)

When we hit the 100,000 milestone in a couple months, we’ll then hit the “TROOP SURGE!” moment where the administration is forced to admit they way overestimated how well the effort was going, but insist that it’s “all part of the plan.”

Rand is such a well informed medical professional that he’s never heard of the Dengue second infection effect. We have no reason to believe Sars-CoV-2 works like that, but also no reason the believe it doesn’t(*).

Or, possibly more realistically, we know that resistance to some coronaviruses is weak, and weakens with time, maybe the same thing is true for Sars-CoV-2. Rand could be saying something as dumb as “Oh, I had the common cold, never get that again, will I”.

(* Actually, I have a vague memory that one experimental vaccine for an earlier coronavirus had the unfortunate side effect of making reinfections almost 100% lethal. An animal coronavirus vaccine? Can’t remember the details).

Some people have proposed issuing “coronavirus passports” to people who’ve had the disease, so they can move around freely while other people are in lockdown. Scientists pointed out the foolishness of that idea since we don’t actually have a clue whether having had the virus gives immunity. It’s a new disease. We don’t know.

Those who have these views have the luxury of living in a society where children don’t routinely die of infectious diseases. If they were in 1950’s America, they would be demanding vaccinations to protect their children.

There was an antivax movement when the first smallpox vaccine came out.

During colonial days, when a smallpox outbreak occurred in Massachusetts, Cotton Mather (of witch-hanging fame) researched potential means to prevent the spread. He found from reading medical texts of the day that the Ottoman Empire had imported inoculation from India, and consulted with physicians in the colony. He ordered all persons in the colony to be inoculated, which was met by resistance from Congregational Church pastors, who viewed smallpox as the Will of God.

After having those pastors arrested and jailed, the inoculation programme proceeded and the epidemic was halted.

When Jenner’s vaccine came out, anti-vaxxers insisted that it would do things like cause cows to grow from boils. All sorts of pro- and anti-vax political cartoons were published in the years afterward.

Anti-vaxxers today insist that smallpox was “naturally eradicated.” They insist the vaccine had nothing to do with it.

Anti-vaxxers are a religious faith every bit as much as conservatism is.

I hope so. I saw on MSNBC that the S.Korean CDC said it does confer immunity. Fingers crossed!

I assume that was a misquote or misinterpretation by MSNBC. There is no way the SK CDC could know. This is a new disease. It’s entirely possible that any “immunity” that is conferred lasts as long as the “immunity” conferred by catching the common cold(*), maybe a couple of months. We have no way at all of knowing whether that is true or not.

“Opening up the economy” has always been about optics, not solutions to economic problems. There is no way they can force people to go out to businesses unless they want to.

They can force people to choose between their job or their health, but I imagine the long-term implication of that is people will either flip legislatures in elections or anyone who can afford to will move away for good.

Unfortunately, many out there don’t have the choice. My sister and I were discussing how fortunate we are that we can weather this out because we are retired, don’t have luxurious lifestyles, and have sufficient financial resources to handle this crisis. Of course, that premise will not hold if we descend into a Mad Max world, but it looks like we are going with the Senator Ron Johnson policy that our country can lose 3% of our population, easy peasy.

I’m not trying to be alarmist, I’m just saying we shouldn’t assume things with no evidence.

(* Roughly 20% of the “common cold” is caused by coronaviruses).

To be more specific, what the South Koreans are saying is that people develop antibodies to the virus. There was some doubt about it earlier because some of the SK tests after infection were coming back negative, but further review showed that it was the test for the antibodies that was failing.

Those who have these views have the luxury of living in a society where children don’t routinely die of infectious diseases. If they were in 1950’s America, they would be demanding vaccinations to protect their children.

Probably quite impossible to tell. I bet if engaged they couldn’t tell you either beyond some screed about “Big Pharma”, “unnatural”, or some other nebulous evil that makes vaccines bad and which the internet informed them of.

Just heard on NPR that Wendy’s is taking hamburgers off the menu due to a shortage of meat.

I bought ground beef this morning and the price was up noticeably. Local, grassfed, etc. etc. Usually $7-$8/lb. This morning $10/lb. How much of that is supply and demand and how much is “because we can” I have no idea. I can’t remember if I saw any “regular” ground beef in the butcher’s case.
Other than that, the store was well stocked and not overly busy.

We’ve opened up a tiny bit here in the Bay Area. Outdoor work like gardening and some construction are allowed. Golf courses can open and parks and open spaces are reopening. I’m not totally sure about the legality, but a number of stores will do curbside delivery if you ask, and I’m feeling that people are relaxing just a little bit. Could be good or bad, depending on what form the relaxing takes, but mostly I think we’re just all getting used to things as they are. Supply chains are re-forming, people know what they’re actually likely to need, and so on.

The official US death toll went over 70k today. I expect we will hit 100k well before June 1.

I was very happy to be wrong about having predicted that for May 1. (I think I did it a month in advance.) I hope you are also wrong, but your expectation has a better chance.

I think the more knowledgeable folks think we’re going to have to open up….but it has to be controlled, and backed up by testing and contact tracing. The West Coast, and maybe Chicago and NY are set up for it; I really have my doubts about the red states.

We’re set up for contact tracing in Nebraska, and so far it’s been aggressive, but it’s only a matter of time before Gov. Ricketts bows to the leaders of his religious faith and ends that.

Chester County, PA COVID-19 stats for yesterday:
Confirmed: 1647 (+42)
Total Tests: 7649 (+147) <— about 1.5% of the county population
Deaths: 148 (+30) <— largest single-day change so far, and 12 more than the previous single-day change announced.

One township with over 1% of the population with confirmed cases. (1.01%)
Townships right around me are all in the 0.60-0.80% range and about 30% of the total deaths.

So when do economists start calling it a depression?

Depression (economics) (Wikipedia)

I prefer Trump Collapse. It wasn’t a depression. It was a self-inflicted own goal with disastrous consequences for all Americans.

Had Trump merely followed the playbook, we could have contained covid19 with far less disruption than the massive shutdowns and huge death toll. Instead he ignored the playbook, ignored the experts, and ignored the need for aggressive testing. That was the trifecta of dumbfuckery. Now we’re going to be paying for the consequences of Trump putting his reelection squarely on need to keep covid19 counts low.

The whole fucking point was to keep the death toll low. You do that with aggressive testing, and even states like NY still aren’t testing enough. The stay-at-home orders are just buying time for the health care system to avoid a total collapse.

Assuming we get legitimate counts, which is highly unlike from red states, about 1,100 deaths daily between now and the end of the month will get us to 100,000 deaths total. But I would be suspicious of low numbers from Florida, Texas, Georgia, etc.

I can’t see tweets 1 and 3 at work, but does he think Social Security and Medicare are only popular in blue states?

Here’s the text of those tweets:

1) You can see this coming into focus. The WH is betting that more rural redder states won’t ever get hit like the northeast. Shutdown the taskforce and deny ownership of the epidemic. Demand ransom of federal dollars and ICE compliance as the price of aid to devastated states

3) 3/ That’s the logical conclusion of the GOP running the country with a minority of voters disproportionally in rural states who are able to control the country because of the electoral college and geography. Run the country while being funded by blue state taxes.

In other words, Trump wants Blue America to pay for everything, get none of the benefits, and Red America to decide everything because fuck you and die, that’s why.

A fleet of six-wheeled robots that deliver retail purchases is becoming increasingly popular in the British town of Milton Keynes during the coronavirus lockdown. The robots, manufactured by the Starship company, are making free deliveries to National Health Service (NHS) staff as public demand for their services grows. The robots feature what appears to be an antenna topped with a red flag, to make it easier to spot them as they perform their rounds. Starship’s Henry Harris-Burland said many NHS personnel in the town use the robots because they have no time to shop for themselves; over the past three weeks, Starship’s robot fleet has completed 100,000 autonomous deliveries. Harris-Burland said, “We’re doing everything we can as quickly as possible to expand to offer this service to more people, especially at this really important time.”

“Fuck the Libz” and ‘Work To Death For Us”. That’s all you really need to understand. That’s the distillation of the entire impetus behind it. And they’ll win because the GOP basically owns Wisconsin, and barring an independent redistricting effort in a couple of years, likely still will because fuck democracy, we own you, that’s why.

Don’t worry, they’ll find their respect for the governorship again soon as a Republican becomes governor again…

I guess we’re going to be closing that border after all.

The lawsuit pending before the Wisconsin Supreme Court seeking to neuter the state’s Secretary of Health and nullify the stay-at-home order just makes me sad. I don’t understand it.

These are difficult times. The pandemic is bad enough on its own, but the stress it is causing on US society is making many unpleasant truths painfully clear:

1) Republicans are basically evil. Their leaders are in it for money and power, and their followers are in it to have their irrational resentments (bigotry etc.) validated.

2) US style capitalism is also basically evil — there is no way to justify its foundational axiom ‘work or die’ in the presence of a ruling class that ‘earns’ far more than what their work could possibly be worth in a free market, especially in view of increased automation and a global labor market.

3) The US political media is almost completely worthless, because instead of dealing with real issues (as above), it mainly focuses on stupid horse races and pushing the great both-siderist lie. If all the both-siderists in the US media were fired, that would take out all of the news executives and 90% of the anchors, reporters and columnists.

and i cut some lines out

Sergeant Cobb: Let’s see some ID.
Jonathan Rollins: I don’t have my wallet with me. I don’t usually carry it with me when I run.
Officer Janssen: [reaching for his gun] Would you please step towards the car, slowly?
Jonathan Rollins: Wait a minute. I’m an attorney. I live 2 miles from here.
Sergeant Cobb: Yeah, sure. Move.
Jonathan Rollins: Hey! What’s your reasonable suspicion?
Sergeant Cobb: You don’t belong here. You don’t fit the profile of this neighborhood. That’s my suspicion. We asked you to step toward the car.

Jonathan Rollins: Get your hands off me.

Sergeant Cobb: Shut your mouth!

Officer Janssen: You happy now, smart guy? You happy now?

Georgia what? I was talking about Minnesota’s border with Wisconsin. If the cheeseheads are going full wingnut, I’m pretty sure Governor Walz has no problem flipping the bird to his counterpart across the St. Croix.

The United States now has about one-third of the coronavirus cases IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. And that’s without testing, so the number of cases is actually higher in this country than the figures indicate. The deaths are similarly almost one-third of the world-wide deaths. There is no conceivable way to spin this. We are doing WORSE than any other country on earth. And now, Trump wants to make this even worse, with many, many more people dying….

Alaska, Hawaii, Montana and Wyoming are among the least-populated states in the U.S., and not surprisingly have the lowest numbers of residents who have tested positive for the new coronavirus. But despite their small size, they scored big this spring when Congress pumped out direct federal aid to the states.

An Associated Press analysis shows those four, along with other small states, took in an out-sized proportion of the $150 billion in federal money that was designed to address coronavirus-related expenses, when measured by the number of positive tests for the COVID-19 disease.

Their haul ranged from $2 million per positive test in Hawaii to nearly $3.4 million per test in Alaska. In Wyoming, the smallest state with less than 600 positive cases, the $1.25 billion it received from the congressional package equates to 80 percent of its annual general state budget.

By comparison, New York and New Jersey, by far the hardest-hit states, respectively received about $24,000 and $27,000 per positive coronavirus test. Other states with high numbers of coronavirus cases, including Massachusetts, Michigan and Illinois, received less than $100,000 per positive case.

I was going to say in reference to the Georgia jogger shooting, that nothing has changed since the heyday of lynching. The yokels are literal savages, among the cruelest and most bloodthirsty in history, especially relative to the more general standards of their time. For most of 100 years, the law has restrained their barbarism to one degree or another. Now, though, with their votes so important to the decadent Republican party’s winning formula, the restraint is falling away and their true nature is coming back out into the open. This is going to get very ugly.
