re: #324 KGxvi

The Klan that Couldn’t Shoot Straight fucks it up again… trying to get Flynn off, they open him up to more criminal liability (criminal contempt/perjury). Fucking brilliant.

Adding: one theory I heard was that Barr was trying to “protect” Trump from having to pardon Flynn. Which is basically stupid in it’s own right. Yes, it would be an abuse of the pardon power, but the only real check on that is impeachment, and we’ve already seen that the Senate GOP doesn’t give a fuck. Trump could have waited until November 5, after the election, when he would be free of “political” considerations and just pardoned Flynn. Instead, they go with the stupid play and piss off a federal judge who is (thankfully) inoculated from their stupidity/

Remember when the wingnuts were sure that Sidney Powell was gonna convince Judge Sullivan to do as he’d done in Ted Stevens’ case and toss the case against Flynn while holding the DOJ’s prosecutors in contempt for withholding evidence?

They wanted Flynn on the campaign trail quickly to fire up the Q-loons and horny old Karens. They thought they could force Sullivan to either go along and bitch a lot in a ruling, or to sentence Flynn anyway which would help sell a pardon.

It never actually occurred to them that Sullivan controls the clock.

They gambled more on the former than the latter, figuring that with the defense and (new) prosecution in agreement to dismiss the case, Judge Sullivan would be boxed in and have no choice but to grant the DOJ’s new position. They apparently didn’t figure on his bringing in outside help in order to either dismantle the DOJ’s motion or make the case for holding Flynn in criminal contempt for perjury. It seems like BIll figured that Sullivan dismissing the whole thing would render moot any question about whether Flynn had lied to the FBI or two judges.

Well, as we say in Texas, “That tune was as sweet as Eagle Brand Milk!”

My father’s parents used that as bottle milk for their babies. Pop lost all of his teeth pronto, and said he couldn’t stand Eagle Brand anymore. But Mom and my bro and I liked it in desserts for special occasions. I just can’t imagine feeding it to babies, bottle in and bottle out! (It must have been cheap during the depression!)

Report from the Safeway front in suburban Denver area, a couple of days ago:
My kid was NOT minding the door when this occurred, it was a 20-something girl who’s a friend of his. There are signs posted in many places where the manager could reach stating that there is a no-mask/no-entry policy, as per the Governor and Tri-County Health (the agency that was getting threats a few days ago).

A guy in his 20’s or 30’s decided it didn’t apply to HIM. He pushed past the girl at the door who was offering him a free mask — physically pushed her. She stepped back, per the manager’s repeated instructions that safety comes first. Unmasked turkey proceeded to the condiment aisle; door kid called the manager. Manager confronted turkey, who also shoved the manager as he reached for his jar of mayo. Upshot is that the security guard who the manager had also summoned wound up escorting said turkey out, sans mayo.

And afterwards, the manager told the shaken and shaking door kid that she had done EXACTLY the right thing, and gave her a $50 bonus. I don’t know about the Corporation as a whole, but this store has some good people running it.

My kid didn’t work today, so don’t know if there’ve been any repercussions, but it’s a nerve-wracking thing even in this fairly quiet white-bread suburb. This white-bread/leans-Republican suburb with a hefty crop of NRA-bumper-sticker-plastered pickup trucks. Okay, I’m definitely worried, and in no big hurry to get out into the shops any time soon.

It still irritates me that one of the things that contributed to the failure of the Walker recall was this deeply foolish idea that getting rid of Walker via a recall wasn’t the right way to do it.

Anything that gets a Republican out of office (that is not a criminal act) is inherently the right way to do it.

Yep, that story made headlines across the St. Croix here. I’m just sitting here shaking my damn head, and thanking my lucky stars that the GOP Senate here was just grandstanding instead of issuing a serious threat to the governor’s power. I am sad that Governor Walz is loosening the reins now, but I imagine he is having to walk a fine line in order to prevent a full-on political revolt in the Senate.

Minnesota doesn’t seem anywhere near as hopelessly gerrymandered and locked down in the way that Wisconsin and a handful of other states are, to where they feel comfortable shitkicking a Dem Governor knowing they will win and get away with it.

Never heard of using Eagle brand, but knew about evaporated milk and Karo syrup. Yeah, doesn’t sound great for the teeth either.

re: #35 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

This interests me because I was just reading an article this morning claiming that there were no confirmed reports of second infections.

This still may not be a second infection. South Korea has had a number of people (with symptoms) test positive, recover, test negative and then later test positive again. It’s unclear whether that means they were reinfected, if they simply were a “false” negative, or if they tested negative because the viral load was non-zero, but undetectable. All of these scenarios are possible.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, and the South Korea example was mentioned in the article. It’s of obvious interest because the topic of a vaccine is at the forefront, and it is important to know if we can even BECOME immune to the disease naturally.

Definitely a lot of unknowns still about this disease. People are going to be writing their doctoral theses about Covid-19 ten years from now, I have a feeling. I just hope some sort of efficacious treatment is arrived at, because actually waiting on the vaccine seems less than likely.

Not that I’m particularly optimistic about that. Just hopeful.

I believe it all took place in North Carolina—the NY Daily News ran an article saying South Carolina but I think they just fucked it up.

That’s correct, it was misreported.

The deputy was from New Hanover County. The home invasion took place in Pender County, both of which are in North Carolina. (Thus I deleted my comment at #86)

One of the mob was arrested.

Pender County resident Austin Wood, who is accused of carrying a gun in the mob, is charged with going armed to the terror of the public, the police said.

cnn.com

Asked why no one was arrested May 3, when the incident happened, Cutler told reporters his office “wanted to make sure the right thing was done.”
“Instead of rushing in and making a charge that evening, the situation was defused,” he said. “We felt like the threat was over, and this has allowed us … some time to be able to investigate this situation and make some informed decisions.”

Informed decisions being “how will we look if we let this slide?”

Admirable, and I know there are plenty who feel similarly. But vaccine development is intrinsically riskier than developing treatments, simply because you are giving it to people who are not sick. Most people who get Covid-19 won’t become ill, so you need to make sure a vaccine won’t make them ill. That’s why we are at least a year out, I would guess.

I seem to recall a Stephen King short story that is sort of based on the premise. A medical wonder treatment is given to everyone in the world (using a volcanic eruption, it’s fiction) and that’s what unleashes the zombie plague.

Not that you don’t want treatment to be safe, but you can more easily test that as your test subjects are already at great risk of dying (the ones who have severe cases of the disease).

I’m probably not saying anything people here don’t already know.

Also, there are always a very few people who simply don’t become immune to any given disease.

And there are those who can catch one again after catching it the first time (not all immunity lasts, EG: me with chickenpox, scarlet fever, and mumps).

That said, immunity usually wears off over years or decades, not a few weeks.

Federal agents seized Burr’s cellphone after they served a search warrant on the Republican at his residence in the Washington area, a law enforcement official told the Times.

O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) — Missouri is moving ahead with plans to execute a man next week, despite new concerns about key evidence that led to his conviction, and despite concerns about the coronavirus that prompted other states to postpone lethal injections.

Walter Barton, 64, is scheduled to die by injection Tuesday for killing 81-year-old trailer park operator Gladys Kuehler in 1991. She was beaten, sexually assaulted and stabbed more than 50 times in the town of Ozark, near Springfield. The execution would be the first in the U.S. since March 5.

Three jurors involved in Barton’s 2006 trial now express misgivings, based on new blood spatter evidence, Barton’s attorney, Fred Duchardt Jr., said Wednesday. The NAACP and Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty submitted more than 5,000 petition signatures Wednesday to Republican Gov. Mike Parson, urging him to grant clemency.
