Alex inspired this episode with his amazing Batfish footage. He just launched his channel in earnest - go and sub!

Barrett Christie
maritimeaquarium.org
Barrett shared his knowledge with me, and is an expert on fish husbandry. His spawning footage is very rare and shows that batfish spawn in a similar way to some other anglerfish.

Javi
vimeo.com
Javi has some really amazing videos on his Vimeo account. There is a pretty amazing aquatic collection over on Vimeo!

Ariane Dimitris
youtube.com
It took me a while to track Ariane down but her longnosed Batfish clip in so good!

LiquidGuru
vimeo.com
LiquidGuru is a pro. Just gets such beautiful views into Aquatic life! His juvenile Orbicular Batfish is so well done.

Raymond Powers
pureflorida.blogspot.com
Raymond came through with the feeding footage at the last second. It is very rare to see them eat, especially in captivity!

Thanks also to the NOAA, Barry Peters, Nico Michiels,
and Gilles San Martin for the use of their images.

The Ghost of a Flea  May 14, 2020 • 9:59:37pm

re: #26 Joe Bacon 🌹

Yeah, that’s the point.

The certainty that they, the believers are connected to both Truth and Morality, in a unique manner that transcends any operational definition of those words, because they have received knowledge. Why is it True, and Moral? Because they, as the elect, deem it to be.

The circular logic is the appeal, because it sanctifies their vague feelings and flights of fancy—that they’re the heroes in a cosmic war again ultimate depravity, even though they’re not doing anything appreciably heroic even before you consider how ill-chosen their tactics and allies are—are the only important thing in the world.

At the base of this is a fundamental rejection of reality: what happened is not important compared to their feeling that they have secret knowledge. It’s not narcissism in the clinical sense, but it is a kind of narcissism, Festinger’s “When Prophecy Fails” sped up and looped: they’ve pinned their egos to an idea, so when the idea fails reality testing…by not happening…they’re left with the choice of excising that part of themselves (by confronting the flawed belief) or finding a method of holding the belief (and thus preserving their self-understanding) in spite of its failure.

What is Flynn thinking? Even if he gets off, the incoming Biden admin could charge him with crimes that he hasn’t been charged with yet (unregistered foreign agent comes to mind). A pardon from trump would not work against future crimes. I would be overjoyed if this happened. Get out now, pay latter.

This makes absolutely no sense and is actually the exact contradiction of the entire program from the beginning. We farmed out parts production to the very companies we’re selling these fighters to. If we pull that production, they’re going to cancel their orders and possibly even look elsewhere for their next-gen fighters.

The knock-on effect of both (reduced orders and domestic production of parts) is going to drive up the cost of the program and force us to either buy fewer fighters or engineer reductions in the platform’s performance by substituting less-capable but otherwise cheaper components into the final product.

The fact that there are so many people who look at this absolute nonsense and say “this make perfect sense to me” really bodes poorly for the survival of humanity.

I don’t believe in religion or supernatural, well anything, anything but I swear the Earth is trying to purge us from it. It’s like the Earth is the Matrix and we are the virus; it gave us a warning (climate change) and 30 years to change and we said Fuck You. So now there’s intensified hurricanes & droughts, etc. Which wasn’t enough so bring on the plague.

The Earth didn’t give us a warning with climate change.

We made climate change.

We’ve actually known that we could change the climate for about 124 years, and that we were changing the climate for over 30 years now. Nature didn’t warn us, Svante Arrhenius warned us. Hell, even Margaret Thatcher warned us.

As the old saying goes, big if true…..

A group of hackers claim that they’ve obtained a pile of “dirty laundry” on President Donald Trump and are threatening to release it unless the law firm they stole it from forks over $42 million.

The New York Post reports that hacker group REvil launched a successful attack against celebrity law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks in which they swiped 756GB of data from the firm’s servers.

“Mr Trump, if you want to stay president, poke a sharp stick at the guys, otherwise you may forget this ambition forever,” the hackers wrote in a threat posted online. “And to you voters, we can let you know that after such a publication, you certainly don’t want to see him as president… The deadline is one week.”

Speak for yourself. France got the same warning and replaced their entire electricity generation system by non fossil (and, it turns out, low carbon) sources.

I was in Costco yesterday, and here’s my observations. 80-90% were observing proper mask protocols and social distancing. Those that weren’t included those wearing masks only over their mouths, or not adequately social distancing on lines or in the aisles.

Most people here are cognizant of the threats (Bergen County being a hot spot in the nation for cases from the outset).

I did see just a handful of people who went beyond just masks. One family seemed to all wear not only masks, but tyvek suits and face shields.

Saw a handful wear just face shields and masks and gloves.

I was there with my n100; the mrs stayed home, and I used hand sanitizer after loading the car.

However, funding to the CDC for a long time has been subject to conservative politics that have increasingly eroded the agency’s ability to mount effective, evidence-based public health responses. In the 1980s, the Reagan administration resisted providing the sufficient budget that the CDC needed to fight the HIV/AIDS crisis. The George W Bush administration put restrictions on global and domestic HIV prevention and reproductive health programming.

It’s not a recent problem. It’s obviously got worse under Trump, but Tories (for that is what they are) have been trying to destroy government competence because they believe in government incompetence for at least 40 years now.

There is no doubt that the CDC has made mistakes, especially on testing in the early stages of the pandemic. The agency was so convinced that it had contained the virus that it retained control of all diagnostic testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, but this was followed by the admission on Feb 12 that the CDC had developed faulty test kits.

But why were these mistakes made? Why did the CDC insist on developing its own test when the German (WHO) Charité test worked?

Exceptionalism?

(Admittedly CDC were not alone making this error, but at least the French Pasteur test was partly based on the German research, and worked. And in the French case it was clearly exceptionalism. American exceptionalism isn’t even that exceptional. :) )

To me, the bigger difference is in the chocolate or vanilla used (we make our own vanilla extract) and use premium chips from Ghirardelli. The primary reason for using KA flour is their bread flour, far superior to any other bread flour you can buy. I bought a 50-lb bag so I won’t run out any time soon.

I also prefer KA all-purpose flour for non-bread baked goods (pie crust, cake, cookies, pancakes etc.) but if you use other premium ingredients it really doesn’t matter what flour you use, the focus is on the other stuff. With bread though, it is the critical ingredient.

This is of course totally wrong.

1. The post 1973 French nuclear expansion is all PWRs. You don’t use PWRs to make bomb plutonium, they’re all IAEA inspected and anyway the refueling schedules and isotope ratios are all wrong.

2. The Force de Frappe (we’re supposed to call it Force de dissuasion to be all touchy feely) predates the Plan Messmer by decades.

3. France, like the UK, made it’s bomb plutonium in the pre-1973 gas cooled reactors (Magnox for the UK, UNGG in France).

No, the whole reason for the Messmer plan was the 1973 oil crisis. France, unlike Germany or the UK had no remaining coal, electricity was all being generated from imported oil.

(Via Business Insider) - Talking loudly produces enough droplets to transmit the coronavirus to others, a new study confirms.

Given that one milliliter of oral fluid contains approximately 7 million copies of the coronavirus (according to previous research), the authors of the new study determined that speaking loudly for just one minute can emit more than 1,000 virus-containing droplets. Their work, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, also shows that those droplets can then remain in the air for eight minutes or longer.

Well, this doesn’t bode well for the wingnuts….

Trump can’t run a government while he is IN OFFICE how tf do you think he can run something IN EXILE. He will get his own show on Fox or probably OAN and scream batshit stuff (also on Twitter) but once he’s kicked out of the WH he can’t DO ANYTHING.

That’s what I mean. They’re going to treat him as “Real America’s President” because Biden naturally will be carried to a victory by urban areas which duh because America is more urban than rural.

I’m not worried about the election itself. I’m more worried about Trump and Trump allies doing all they can to treat Trump as a President in Exile and to obstruct everything Biden does.

That I can see happening, unfortunately.

I can’t wait for there to be antibody testing. I’ve been sick since January - but with only some of the lesser COVID19 symptoms and not others. But this was one of those “never sick like this before” things that has lingered for months.

I’ve had all my usual “mild allergy to spring” symptoms, which overlap with covid-19 symptoms, but this season, I’ve noticed them more.

The Speaker’s term also ends in January 2021.

Not precisely.

The next session of Congress is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 4 (I think). Its membership will be determined by the results of the November elections: and (IIRC) election of a Speaker is normally the first order of business at every new session.

So regardless of what happens with the Presidency, there will be a Speaker in place for the interim between the opening of the 117th Congress and Inauguration Day.

We hope.

Remember, if the elections are suspended or postponed, Trump’s term in office still ends in January 2021, as does Mike Pence’s…if there is no elected candidate, then the Rules of Succession apply, at which point the Speaker of the House assumes the Presidency.

If there are no elections, there also would be no House of Representatives, which means it would devolve to the Senate, which by virtue of there being no elections would be a Democratic majority due to all the Republicans leaving office. Which until early January 2021 would be Chuck Grassley. After that… who knows, Chuck Schumer?

Elections are handled by the states, not the federal govt, and that would require the GOP to ignore the state requirements to hold these elections too.

Because governors are up for reelection, local offices need to be filled, etc. These elections will happen.

It’s so bad having allergies now. I was standing in line last week to get booze (where there are longer lines than the grocery store… Always) and I had to cough. Badly. I asked the guy behind me to save my place (Canadians being the kindest people, of course he did) so I could go to my car, cough my brains out, blow my nose and get back in line.

I’m afraid if I start coughing in public I’ll get killed or something. Kindness only goes so far.

While I’m at it, two old guys discussing masks while standing in line (wearing mine) saying wearing them doesn’t make any sense - but he does have a mask for when he’s in his car. And I’m thinking, my dudes, you’re doing it all wrong.

When I went in, amongst other things I picked up four packages of ramen noodles (everything on the shelf). Most shelves were very low stocked. There was also only two loaves of bread and one carton of milk.

I asked if he was getting stripped by out-of-towners again, even though his store is “officially closed.” He said no, he has plenty of stock in the back. The reason for low quantities of everything on the shelf is to help keep people from handling everything and spreading the virus through his wares.

When someone buys something, he goes in the back and replaces it. He offered me more ramen noodles, I told him I was fine, that’s all I wanted anyway.

Absolutely. We need to get it into our base voters heads that the mditerms are as important as the presidential election years. Having Mitch as Majority Leader over Schumer now matters a great deal. My hope is McGrath takes out McConnell in Kentucky. I haven’t seen any polls there lately. I think it’s possible she beats him since Mitch is more vulnerable now than he has been in the past.

The bill does not protect people 18-26. The health minister said he wanted a bill which would stand up to court challenges, hence the weak bill.

I mean, seriously? I worked with the guys who had to deal with human trafficking victims. Some of the most damaged, exploited people on earth.

And the response of ICE was to coerce these poor girls into giving them handies, then arresting THE GIRLS, stealing their meagre savings, throwing them in jail, & not prosecuting the gangs exploiting them?

Who was in charge of this? Stephen Miller? Don Jr.?

Agents with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Arizona have been “fighting” human trafficking by sending federal immigration agents to coerce suspected victims into paid sex acts. These acts were later used by authorities to justify arresting women who agreed to them, seizing their assets, and telling the press it was these women who were the real predators.

Federal agents had at least 17 sexual encounters with “Asian females” working in massage parlors around Mohave County, Arizona, over a five-month period in 2018, according to new research from the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at Arizona State University (ASU). Internal ICE documents show these activities had the blessing of agents’ supervisors.

It’s the best flour I’ve ever used. I also like their whole wheat flour!

Conservatives in that thread are already saying “liberals want open borders” or cheering on what ICE did to deport “illegal immigrants.”

Well, let’s see what happens when more people die, Trump is beating the drum of “get back to work”, UE benefits dry up, with the GOP, led by Trump, shooting down all Dem efforts to get financial assistance to needy demographics.

The tide is building. Right now, the additional UE benefits are probably keeping a LOT of people afloat. The GOP, of course, can’t get rid of it fast enough. Once that happens? Shit is going to hit the fan.

One guess.

More bullshyte to try to paint liberals as anti-Christian.

Private speech between two military personnel, even proselytisation, is already protected speech in the I Amendment.

In the military such speech is only prohibited like any speech might be: If it undermines morale or the officer corps, government or its officials, or interferes with completion of duties.

Specifically, the letter calls on Esper to protect the career of Col. Moon H. Kim, the command chaplain of U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys in South Korea. Kim faced backlash after he shared John Piper’s book, Coronavirus and Christ, with fellow chaplains in an email.

The lawmakers are also calling for the protection of Air Force Lt. Col. David McGraw, who for eight weeks led worship services from the balcony of his military housing unit in Germany.

Both Kim’s and McGraw’s actions are being condemned by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an organization that represents service members as it pushes for a strict separation of church and state within the military.

In both cases, the organization is representing service members who took offense to McGraw’s and Kim’s actions. MRFF has called for McGraw and Kim to be subject to a general court-martial for their actions of sharing their faith.

They are using their official position to push Christianity. That is an explicit violation of the First Amendment. So it’s bash atheists time (even though the majority of MMRF is made up of Christians).

The politicians involved here will also use it to bash Democrats as anti-Christian.

It was…. inevitable.

And I am plum out of fucks to give.

They were warned how deadly serious all of this was, and they ignored the warnings, ignored the experts, and pleas to stay home and social distance and wear masks.

They did this to themselves. Fuck all of them and the enabling GOP to hell. They’ve enabled these know nothings and Trump’s again spewing nonsensical bulkshit about how this will all magically disappear at some random time in the future.

Because there’s no vaccine and no cure and no miracle treatment. All Trump has left is to baffle with bulkshit about how he’s done great on the economy, which is insane considering the damage he’s done thanks to his actions (and lack of same).

And the middle one is still being an idiot. She’s claiming that because she’s healthy it will only be a small problem. It’s a likely that it’s allergies, but whatever it is, unless she gets really sick, she’ll be back claiming it’s no big deal, and will probably refuse a test to see if she’s actually had it.

Fixed bad post.

They are not suing for “sharing their faith.” That’s a load of crap. They are suing for violating the First Amendment and the UCMJ.

5/8/20 - MRFF VICTORY!!! Air Force Officer Ends Sunday “Porch Preaching” to Captive COVID-19 Lockdown Audience at USAG Stuttgart (Military Religious Freedom Foundation)

Currently the MRFF is entangled with the VA over Nazi graves in a cemetery. The stones of German soldiers are marked with Nazi symbology, which the VA says are protected historical monuments. Massive numbers of veterans want those stones removed. With Nazis racists conservatives in charge of the VA, they won’t remove them.

Hi Lizard folks,
I don’t post often but here’s something I posted in the Washington Post a few days back on the procedure if elections were cancelled.

While I’m not a constitutional expert, my understanding of the process if an election doesn’t happen is:

Trump and Pence’s mandate ends Jan 20th
The Houses mandate expires Jan 3rd, so no President Pelosi her term as Speaker ended

Next up is the President Pro Temp of the Senate, currently held by Senator Grassley since he isn’t up for election this cycle his mandate is still valid and is the first in the line of secession to constitutionally qualify.

Polio, which was a scourge of early 20th century (identified symptomatically in the mid 19th century), saw efforts to create a vaccine in the 1930s and the testing suggested that it may have caused cases or was ineffectual. Later, the Salk vaccine was developed in 1953 and Sabin’s vaccine created in 1957 and tested. There were hiccups there too, but Sabin’s version became the primary version for years due to cost and ease to vaccinate.

With current tech, we might be able to create a vaccine faster, but testing still requires significant double blind studies to determine safety and side effects and risks, before you put it in the general population.

Trump’s lying and misleading the nation when he thinks there’s a vaccine right around the corner.
