Has me wishing my shoddy video editing skills were actually worth a damn.
My previously-mentioned poor effort to make a clip with tRump’s speeches on COVID against the backdrop of the death toll in terms of bigger and bigger stadiums and well-known venues?
That’s its literal working title.

on thegreatpoolpondconversion

it has not rained a lot this year (yet).

now that the liner is in, we’ve only had to pump out the water twice - a couple of inches each time - so we could continue to work down in the bottom.

well last night was a drown pour.

so much water flowed in that the entire bottom, plus a part of the first shelf are all under water.

it’s a pond!

until tomorrow when we drop in the sump pump and bail it out again

we can’t keep doing that as we progress, and we figure there may be times we have to actually get in the water later so we’re looking at fisherman’s waders.

if we do, there will definitely be photos.

Yeah, so …I might have gotten pissed off and scrapped most of what I had at an early stage due to lack of satisfaction and a sinking feeling I’d never be able to get it right in its original form…. xD
Figured I’d just stick to graphics (some of which I posted here) while keeping it pending until i’d come up with newer stuff I could pull off.

There will be several posts here, as I got an email from the U of Illinois, talking about some things that U of I students and faculty have been working on to help combat COVID-19, and I got all proud in my feels. (They also provided a number of photo backdrops of campus places that we can use as zoom backgrounds, including one of Smith Music Hall, where I spent most of my time for four years, and one of Krannert Performing Art Center, which came on line in my last year, so got to play there a couple of times.)

They produced a quickie ventilator — RapidVent — (not used on humans yet, but been through 1.5 million of breathing cycles) that could be used with an oxygen tank or regular hospital room oxygen feeds. Really cool!

Another U of I Lab started making hand sanitizer for health care facilities, doing 300 gallons a day.

And my favorite: medicine.illinois.edu

Carle Illinois College of Medicine students designed a concept called “COVI-Pod, a negative pressure system isolation pod that creates a secure barrier between the patient and the hospital room. The COVI-Pod places the patient’s medical equipment—including IV poles, monitors, and ventilators—in a clean area outside the pod, where no PPE is required. When healthcare workers need to reposition patients or perform physical exams or emergent procedures, only then do they need to enter the COVI-Pod donning full PPE. By reducing patient contact while continuing patient care, the COVI-Pod could reduce the need for PPE by 60%.”

I’m so proud of these folks, and my alma mater!

Me likey!

My initial concept was a split screen sort of thing with Trump being shown golfing (or referenced playing golf, in video only) on one half, with audio in the background from his COVID speeches, starting with the “It’s their new hoax” clip and progressing onward, with dates being emphasized at the bottom.
Meanwhile, on the right side of the screen, a growing death toll showed increasingly larger stadiums and venues, with their capacities highlighted in the front & corresponding to the dates of the Trump speeches being heard.

For example:
Carnegie Hall New York, Capacity: 3,671
U.S. COVID Deaths, April 1, 2020: 4,079

Anaheim Convention Center California, Capacity: 7,500
U.S. COVID Deaths, April 5, 2020: 8,501

Latter Day Saints Conference Center Utah, Capacity: 21,000
U.S. COVID Deaths, April 13, 2020: 22,100

The audio would play Trump’s words against an ominous tune that would grow louder as the numbers grew in size.
I was never really satisfied with my endings for it, but most featured the same text against the backdrop of the latest and biggest sporting stadium in black and white:
“Donald Trump thinks this is a game. But Donald Trump has no game plan. How many more have to die until America has one?”

I honestly will be surprised if Judge Sullivan doesn’t flay Donny’s appointed hack lawyer alive at the next hearing:

On Friday, CNN reported the reason why the motion from the Justice Department to dismiss the charges against former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn did not bear the signatures of all the federal prosecutors who worked on the case.

Specifically, according to justice correspondent Evan Perez, the two prosecutors who did not sign had first wanted the motion to include an acknowlegement that their work on the case was ethical, and that there was no prosecutorial misconduct on their part.

The DOJ did not allow such language into the motion filed with District Judge Emmet Sullivan, presumably because it would undermine the entire basis for their claim that the charges against Flynn should be dismissed.

Translation: In addition to jamming a dagger right between the FBI’s shoulder blades, Barr ordered the DOJ’s own prosecutors burned in order to secure Flynn’s release without a pardon.

If someone wanted to do a video, and show the number of people that have died from CV19, all they have to do is show football, baseball, hockey and basketball (because they are usually the same venue) college football stadiums and NASCAR tracks.
Do a countdown.
Venue.
Capacity.
Numbers dead versus capacity.
Your sports fans will grasp that.
“Right now 3/4 of Beaver Stadium, home of the Penn State Nittany Lions, are filled with dead Americans.”
Do the voice over and then speed it up.
Bam.
Bam.
Bam.
Bam.
Don’t even have to explain. The venues are known to 3/4 of us.
Venue-Capacity-Dead………..
and it is not over because the GOP and Donald Trump cared more about making money than you or your family.
Vote like your life depended on it.
It does.

Downstairs it seems the Facebook discussion continued while I was away.

I still use Facebook, mostly to see who’s died, or has a birthday, etc.

Facebook attracted many older Americans, perhaps because of all those stupid diversions Facebook offered.

Anyway, the world of genealogy mostly belongs to old people.

So what happened is that many genealogy forums were abandoned and now Facebook is genealogy central (at least for the US.)

So for my purposes in genealogy I also use Facebook.

The real problem with Facebook is that it enables, even encourages, people to live in bubbles. Facebook is horrible for doing any sort of detailed post (the limited image embedding and almost non existence typography are two examples.)

So the older folk who are afraid that the dirty god-hating socialists are going to take away their Social Security and take away Je$u$ all congregate in masses on Facebook groups dedicated to Real Americans.

In other words, Facebook was made for the John Birch Society types.

I gather most young people just waste away their lives playing games on Twitch, while their grandparents waste away their few remaining days on Facebook playing Candy Crush and falling for every nostalgia meme that comes by.

Grocery store updated: went this afternoon.

There were some surprises. First off, it was quite busy for 3PM. The Friday rush used to start a bit later.

And the big surprise: the paper aisle simultaneously had toilet paper and paper towels. Name brands of both - two of each type. Though the toilet paper second name brand was almost diminished. I expect both stashes of paper to be gone by tomorrow.

And the third surprise: hydrogen peroxide! This was a shock.

The frozen fruit section was still quite bare, but it did have a few products. That the frozen fruit have been in very high demand is the one thing that took me by surprise and I still don’t know what people are doing with frozen fruits in the pandemic that they didn’t do before.

The thing about the “unmasking” shit, as was pointed out by TPM, is that it’s even dumber than the usual Obama fake scandal:

But the fact of the request means that the officials who are asking don’t know the identity of the target. So, there’s no way that Flynn could have been “targeted” in some kind of conspiracy. The officials involved asked because they had no idea what they would find.

Actually NASCAR has cut capacity seating in their tracks. Empty seats don’t play well on TV. It’s like watching a losing football teams game after they have no chance.
Tight shots. No overhead. Cut the empty. Show the full.
And as far as I’m concerned NASCAR can drive the entire franchise into a bridge abutment.

Added:

Did Daytona remove seats?
When the huge project was done, the number of permanent seats at the speedway had gone from 146,000 to 101,500. That’s 44,500 seats gone, or 31 percent of its former capacity. Daytona said the seats removed were its “lowest quality” ones on the backstretch, according to ESPN

More:
According to Speedway Motorsports annual reports, the Charlotte speedway had 171,000 permanent seats in 2001. After the 41,000 seats are removed between now and mid-2015, capacity will shrink to 93,000, a decrease of 46 percent from the 171,000 peak.

Yeah, those indictments will arrive on the same day as the ones for the FISA court “abuses” that were supposedly going to lead to everybody in Comey’s inner circle going to jail.

I thought Hillary would have been arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned by now - but instead, Trump’s traitors (Flynn, Cohen, Manafort, Stone, etc.) have taken the fall.

How incompetent is Trump that his own folks are doing time and the one he threatened during the debates is out and about?

re: #64 garzooma

The thing about the “unmasking” shit, as was pointed out by TPM, is that it’s even dumber than the usual Obama fake scandal:

Thing is, most everybody’s in agreement with the leak to the press about Flynn being the second party in the intercepted call. Or, at least they’re in agreement that if that info was classified, then leaking it to the press is a crime. The problem the Trump admin has on their hands is trying to convince everybody listening that “unmasking” and leaking are synonymous in the law. They’re not, hence the incredulity being expressed that they think this shit is actually going to work.

Oh dear Dog. Fell into a childhood rabbit hole because of the damn Captain Kangaroo. Watching episodes of Underdog, and Go-Go Gophers is on. One of the most racist cartoons ever. Currently, the whites are attacking the Indians with a secret weapon called the Indian giver machine. (JFC)

I watch a show on youtube that the two guys from one of my fave podcasts (The Dollop) do. They watch horribly racist, sexist, violent cartoons. I think they need to do some Go-Go Gophers.

That reminds me, when I first encountered the term “Indian giver,” I decided it had to mean someone who gives things to Indians, even though I was older when I learned that whites who gave things to Indians generally took them back.

Anybody else beginning to feel like this “unmasking” shit is just Plamegate v2.0? That it’s going to end with some minor functionary or low-level Obama admin employee being implicated as the source of the “leak” to the press, followed by days of screaming from wingnuts that the order could only have come from the top and insist that “everybody knew”?

Everybody already knew. That’s already the truth. And the documents say it was legal.

re: #58 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Contributing factor:

A frozen food plant in Albany [OR] has been fined $2,000 by the state of Oregon following an outbreak of COVID-19 there affected nearly three dozen people.

Tin-foil mode: Makes me wonder if Q madness might be a LEFT-wing plot, designed to distract and mis-direct the Trumpian masses. Q-balls have already gained control of a number of county-level Republican operations. If they can do the same at the state level, and have major influence nationally, they could well induce reality-based fascists and grifters, not to mention money-baggers, to sit out the election entirely, or vote lepertarian, which is the functional equivalent.

Is this good foil or has my hat gotten too tight while isolated here on Planet Kirel?

The University of Washington has us at projected deaths by August 4 of 127-312 (we’re pretty close to 127 now).

1. The only font colors that really work are white, yellow and blue. Yellow tends to pop out while blue recedes. A “lower third”, someone’s name and affliation or title, will usually be done with the name in white and the affliation in yellow, or blue.

I’m not sure. I believe the numbers from the Panhandle Public Health District (it would be pretty hard to hide someone dying here of Covid-19).

As for the rest of the state, when the governor said he wouldn’t release info about meat packing plants, one public health district defied him and released their numbers anyway, and all the meat packing plants released both the numbers from public health sources and private sources they hired.

Aside from Omaha and Lincoln, cities here really aren’t that big. It would be hard to hide information from people who live in them.

Scottsbluff at 14,805 is the 13th largest city in the state.

All gods curse graphic designers who use (movies especially) red fonts.

Red fonts don’t usually look good. In the Old Days, they looked terrible in NTSC because the color encoding was very noisy. But, once again, modern standards haven’t changed those recommendations much. Red is still not good.

Hello, Lizards.
I left off at the start of the Colbert Birthday thread, so about 4 or 5 back by now.
Apologies for not responding to any major news from this crew, and truly hope there hasn’t been too much bad of it.

Remember the story of the Safeway mask enforcement from a few days ago?
Kid went into work today and was told that the word came down from on high that no, they cannot in fact enforce the no-mask/no-entry rule. Corporate is blaming it on a clause in the union policy, which sounds a bit specious but they feel they’ve covered their little corporate fannies, damn their craven little eyes.

For some reason, that flip-flop has blown out the last even on my can’t scale. Have decided I need to take a week off from the world, or at least the news thereof. Am going to sign off here, stop looking at Hoarse Whisperer and Stonekettle and Charlie Pierce, and try desperately to ignore anything political posted on Facebook. Planning to concentrate on the bulging backlog of things I CAN do something about, in this minuscule corner of the universe. Planning to not to leave the house unless 100% unavoidable and not at all for the five days comprising Memorial Day weekend. Hoping to catch up on connections with IRL folks because I’ve fallen behind. Will see if my blood pressure comes down and the patience level recovers to any extent.

Maybe even play music while I work a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle.

Not flouncing from here!
Not even sure I can stick to the resolution, given the overwhelming gravity of what’s going on out there
Just taking a sabbatical

Stay safe, if you can
Stay well, if you can
Stay as sane as you can when dealing with the news, and as crazy as you need to for relaxation
Good wishes and good fortune to all of you, friends

If you must use red, try a lighter shade. The main reason for this is because human vision perceives pure red as a dark shade. The eye sees green as a very bright shade. Blues and violets are dark. Most software will let you pick colors that are desaturated—i.e. a lot of white in them. You shouldn’t go overboard and use pastels. Simply pick colors that aren’t too deep.

It probably would only take half-an-hour walking around town and asking. I’m not sure who at Wikipedia is doing the estimating. The 2010 Census was 128; since then I know of five children born and four people who died, five who moved in and three who moved out.

You don’t need the ring fingers at all. Cut those out entirely (eww gross). Just with eight fingers, the eighth is the 128 position in base 2. That’s enough.
