An Evocative New Piece From Brad Mehldau: “L.A. Pastorale”

Brad Mehldau performs his piece “L.A. Pastorale,” from the album ‘I Still Play,’ due May 22, 2020, on Nonesuch: smarturl.it

‘I Still Play’ is eleven new solo piano compositions by artists who have recorded for Nonesuch Records, written in honor of the label’s longtime President Bob Hurwitz on the occasion of his 2017 shift into the Chairman Emeritus role. The album features works by John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Timo Andres, Louis Andriessen, Donnacha Dennehy, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, Brad Mehldau, Steve Reich, Pat Metheny, and Randy Newman, performed by Andres, Mehldau, Newman, and Jeremy Denk.

Mehldau writes:

pastoral: having the simplicity, charm, serenity, or other characteristics generally attributed to rural areas.

How would that sentiment apply to Los Angeles, a metropolis of concrete, cars and freeways? Although I think of Bob as a New Yorker—he is part and parcel of my New York City experience in all the time I’ve known him—Los Angeles is his city of origin. It’s a place I know as well, having lived there for five years. A few years ago, Bob showed me a collection of photographs he made in L.A. that speak of something particular to that city: Amidst the urban facades, the brash advertisements that promise impossible salvation, and the ceaseless flow of humans, there is a quiet flow, and there are pockets of beauty if you take the time to look. It’s the L.A. pastorale.

I am just a bit skeptical of this on the basis of that well established principle of logic, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
As a precaution, we should probably try to raise funds to outbid Trump and get it released anyway. The seller would need to factor in that we (the “not Trumpers”) are far more likely to actually pay.

It’s not something we should even consider a thing. It either gets released or they announce Trump paid the money, which would also be damning.

So I spent my afternoon cutting the lawn and arguing with a 6-month pregnant Canadian woman about the need to wear masks in public.

She’s against it. Also, 6 months pregnant, in case I didn’t mention that.

She’s been big on posting Faucci/COVID conspiracy theories lately. Starting to get on my fucking nerves, to be honest.

a) If it is true, they are criminals. (Theft, extortion) I’m not big on giving $42million to criminals for criming.
b) If this was about “exposing Trump,” they’d just do it.
c) At least for now, there’s no way to know you’d get anything after you gave them the money.
d) I imagine the FBI is going to be all over this if it’s true. I’d want to stay out of their way.

Most of Team Maskless Morans are actually cowards. A simple lie: “My sister works with Covid-19 patients but if you don’t think it’s a big deal I’ll take of my mask. It’s mildly uncomfortable.” Watch them back away.

It’s probably something real but dumb, like the Actual Pee Tape of song and legend. His followers would not be influenced in the slightest.
Btw, my proposal for a counter-bid is a joke. I can’t, and wouldn’t, really try to raise $42 million dollars to pay off crooks and blackmailers, even if they are targeting Trump.

After Memorial Day, people are going to be traveling and spreading this thing all over. I was talking to my dad yesterday. A childhood friend’s son is getting married on June 1 in my hometown. My dad said originally he was only going to go the wedding and not reception. But he recently talked with the groom’s grandmother and has decided to skip it all together. College friends will be coming to the wedding from all over. My niece is also planning a wedding in July (again in my hometown) that will be hard for my dad to skip (he’ll probably go). Same thing, friends from all over. I wish she’d just get married then throw a big party next summer. Even in my family, the olds are expendable.

It fucking sucks for individuals, and I will mourn every loss that does have the surname Trump, but collectively, there are far too many dipshits in this country that need to experience a shitty deal before they will start to think about doing the right thing. It’s just a shame it’s not a disease that only affects those that don’t believe it’s real and dangerous.

I took advantage of the weather before the rain came, and had the motor running on the old brown Lincoln by late morning today. Miss America Phyllis George in Vietnam, 1971

From the S&S archives: Vietnam crown of Miss America’s reign

STARS AND STRIPES
Published: September 2, 1971

SAIGON — She has traveled 320,000 miles and visited 43 U.S. states in the last year, but she liked Vietnam best of all.

So says Miss America 1971 — Phyllis George — who called her trip to Vietnam the highlight of her reign.

But, Miss George — who turns in her crown and title in less than two weeks — expressed the hope that no future Miss America would have to visit Vietnam.

“I hope this is the last USO tour that has to come here,” she said. “I hope they bring our guys home — I guess most people do.”

Miss George and six state beauty pageant winners spent most of August visiting U.S. troops in Vietnam. The girls were scheduled to leave in early September.

“This has been an outstanding way to end a year,” Miss George said. “The guys here have made it rewarding for us.”

“…The agency has long kept tab on scores of substances that have surfaced in water systems around the country, with the aim of restricting those that endanger public health. But partly because the rules the agency must follow are complicated and contentious, officials have yet to limit any new contaminant for decades. Perchlorate is the only chemical to come close to regulation since the 1990s. Time and again, regulators have backed away.

The last time came on a Friday in 2008, when the Bush administration formally declined to set a drinking-water safety standard for perchlorate. With little fanfare, the agency issued a news release saying it had “conducted extensive review of scientific data related to the health effects of exposure to perchlorate from drinking water and other sources and found that in more than 99 percent of public drinking water systems, perchlorate was not at levels of public health concern.”

In that instance, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post at the time, White House officials heavily edited the scientific findings in the EPA’s rulemaking documentation.”

That requires multiple contradictory positions a supporter of conservatism religious faith must hold:

a) They care about someone besides themselves or someone they know
b) They believe this is not a hoax
c) They can’t carry guns in a hospital
d) They can’t order someone else to do something for them as slaves

PBS Finds No Support for Tara Reade’s Accusations
More than 70 former Biden staffers found nothing that would corroborate her story.
by Martin Longman, Washington Monthly

It’s interesting to see how thorough the PBS NewsHour reporters were in trying to assess Tara Reade’s allegations against Joe Biden. They identified and “tried to contact nearly 200 former staffers.” They ultimately interviewed 74 people, including 62 women, who worked for Biden over the years. Some were mere interns, others system administrators, and some were senior aides. Their experience spanned from his first run for Senate in 1972 all the way to his time as vice-president. Twenty of them worked for Biden in the early 1990s, at the same time as Reade. No one corroborated her primary accusation or offered anything that could reasonably be described as supporting information.

While that’s a major blow to her story, NewsHour’s biggest bombshell was this:

Savage, who worked as the office’s systems administrator, overseeing computers and information processing, told the NewsHour that Reade was fired for her poor performance on the job, which he witnessed — not as retaliation for her complaints about sexual harassment.

But according to Savage, Reade had been mishandling a key part of her job and an essential office task — processing constituent mail, something they worked on together. Savage said he recalls reporting these issues to his boss, deputy chief of staff Dennis Toner. After that, Savage said he began diminishing Reade’s duties, taking over some of her tasks and rerouting parts of the process to exclude her.

There’s a real impression, when one reads between the lines of her various recitations of her time working in Biden’s office, that she felt certain jobs were beneath her and got outraged that she was punished for not taking them seriously. I don’t think I’ve worked a job yet where a former coworker didn’t have a list of excuses for why they were suddenly fired. And it’s a virtual guarantee that “harassment” will be somewhere towards the top of the list.

Cue more screaming from Donny about how “mean” Faux is being to him.

That Financial Times article was worth the reading. We know the story, but there were new tidbits.

I listened to Stuttering John’s podcast where he interviews Rick Wilson. I thought Wilson’s reading of Mitch McConnell’s motive were interesting. He said McConnell cares about nothing but power, and as time goes on if he sees that his tenure as Senate Majority Leader is truly in danger because of Fuckface Von Clownstick he’ll turn on him faster than Lloyd turns on Harry at the end of Dumb and Dumber.

re: #187 Targetpractice

While that’s a major blow to her story, NewsHour’s biggest bombshell was this:

There’s a real impression, when one reads between the lines of her various recitations of her time working in Biden’s office, that she felt certain jobs were beneath her and got outraged that she was punished for not taking them seriously. I don’t think I’ve worked a job yet where a former coworker didn’t have a list of excuses for why they were suddenly fired. And it’s a virtual guarantee that “harassment” will be somewhere towards the top of the list.

Harassment is the excuse

Just like the all encompassing ‘malpractice’ that didn’t exist until a client decides he doesn’t like the result

There better be trials of the fascists.

There won’t be. They’re white.

Yay! The dambusters raid! Destroy German dams to stop their industry!

Sir — it turns out hitting the concrete dams used for generating electricity to turn the wheels of the German war machine is too hard.

So what shall we do?

Well, we could just abandon the plan.

Defeatism! How about we destroy the earth dams used for water supply instead?

Sir — that would kill many civilians in the resulting flood waves.

Sounds good to me, carry on.

Operation Chastise: An estimated 1,600 civilians - about 600 Germans and 1,000 mainly Soviet forced labourers - died.
