We can blame Orrin Hatch for the proliferation of do-nothing “supplements” that very carefully word their claims so they don’t cross into the territory of actually making health claims.
That said, the FDA and the FTC have been cracking down on people claiming that their magic woo can treat or cure coronavirus. Most notably, the Jim Bakker Show was told to stop peddling their crap, but he’s literally one of dozens who have received letters over sales of coronavirus cures. fda.gov
What’s more interesting to me is the warning letters sent out by the FTC to ten multilevel marketing companies late last month. These outfits sell oils and pills and shakes and so on. Some of the “distributors” of these companies were making false claims about coronavirus. In addition, the FTC is also cracking down on income claims being made by MLM “distributors,” who, to put it bluntly, make more money off recruiting than by actually selling the product.
This has sent other multi-level marketing companies into a frenzy of “OMG Don’t Make Income Claims!” based on the internal videos and memos that are circulating on anti-MLM YouTube. I love these (mostly young) women, almost all of whom got sucked into MLMs and are now taking them down by showing pictures and videos of distributors making claims and then showing that 99 percent of people do not make money in MLMs.
Just as a side note: it’s interesting how gendered these scams seem to be. Most multi-level marketing companies appeal to women, with the exception of the granddaddy of them all, Amway. Consequently, most of the former MLMers looking to take them down are women, starting out from their kitchen tables with their smartphones and graduating to better cameras and sound equipment as they get followings.
However, there is a whole genre of “financial gurus” who appeal to young men. Probably the most (in)famous is a guy named Grant Cardone, who is a real jerk that has managed (generally) to keep his nose clean (but anyone who buys something from him should know he’s a very committed Scientologist). Underneath him, there are whole tiers of guys trying to shake down young men with the secrets of how to make money fast. And the people busting these guys tend to be young men, not all of whom were in the various programs out there. If you’re interested, you can find those videos by searching “fake guru.”

IQ is a measure of a set of basic skills that MIGHT make an individual more able to learn more complicated skills, to a greater degree of mastery, than a person with less IQ.
Might, because the missing part of the equation is both opportunity and desire to learn.
If, from a set of cultural or psychological limits, a person ceases to learn, then their IQ does not translate to understanding, let alone insight, in any specific area of knowledge.

It does have to do with intelligence, but nothing to do with decency, ethics, or education (he dropped out of college to pursue acting).
The overwhelming majority of members of high-IQ societies do not go around telling you what they scored, even to others in the same society. To those outside such a society they may say they’re a member or talk about the things they do, but not about their specific score on a test.
Most standard IQ tests top out around 160-165, so Mr. Woods’s claim of 180 is questionable. The only source for Mr. Woods’s claim is Mr. Woods. It has been repeated by the media (especially media which covers celebrities), but he has provided no evidence of it (for example, the results of a proctored IQ test).
Lots of people claim to have high IQs, but “I think I have a high IQ” is not the same as having a proctored test by a professional trained in that area (a psychologist).
It’s not always the celebrity who makes the claim though: Sometimes the celebrity media makes the claim up out of whole cloth.
For example, there was a stir when Huffington Post made the claim Shakira is a “genius” because she has a 140 IQ as published by Mensa UK.
Mensa UK has no such published figures; Mensa does not publish them.
Mensa International refutes recent press stories (Goes to Mensa International, debunking the so-called celebrity list which included James Woods)
American Mensa, Ltd. used to give the score to members when they took a Mensa-proctored test, but the American Psychological Association stopped Mensa from doing that, only permitting “accepted” and “not accepted” now. Mensa requires a four-year degree to proctor a test, but not a degree in psychology.
After the HP post was debunked, they updated their article to claim Mensa “denies” they released Shakira’s scores. No other outlet ever updated or corrected their articles about her, James Woods, Madonna, &c.

My original point was that IQ isn’t really a measure of intelligence. IQ is a narrow tool to measure skills needed to pass multiple guess exams and possibly to do well in certain academic classes. But it indicates nothing about intelligence in the real world, judgement, knowledge, or character.

Thanks, Charles. I was looking for podcasts to listen to when I was going through hard times around 2009/2010. I hit upon Adam Carolla and Marc Maron among a few others that were just starting. I liked Carolla because it was polished and I could listen when I was working out. But Marc’s was a shit show of anger and need and trying to figure out how he and other comics made their way. It was mostly stuff like: why is it ok for Carlos Mancia to get rich by ripping off other comedians, etc. Over time it has become as slick as Carolla because he’s mostly interviewing big stars promoting their latest, but there is still a vulnerability that others lack. I hope he keeps it up, but I would understand why he would quit either temporarily or forever.
ETA: I stopped listening to Carolla within the first year. His “I swung a hammer instead of going to college therefore I know more than those who went to college” routine grew old quickly.

Hey, I earned money from grade school on stapling the Cattell Culture Fair tests. My mother was secretary, then office manager there until she retired at 70. I moved on from gathering and stapling at a penny a pop to helping in the computer department, growing with it as it grew. Decided to go for a Masters in Statistics, but soon decided that was not my thing.
We were proud that the Culture Fair, or Culture Free tests were non-verbal, and could be used around the world to test perception and reasoning.
My mother earned her money, deciphering Raymond Cattell’s handwriting!

When my mother was in college for her clinical psychology degree, one of the things she was required to do was find guinea pigs test subjects that she didn’t know to take the WAIS. The problem was our town was so small she knew everyone, so the instructor allowed her to test people in our town and family members (so my eldest cousin, sister, and I were all test subjects for the adult test).
One of the issues about the test at that time as my mother tells it is cultural bias. She notes that she argued for three days in class to get the instructor to accept an answer to a verbal question my cousin, sister, and I gave for “What do you do if you see smoke coming from a building?”
There were lots of acceptable answers, such as “call the fire department” or “tell someone in authority.” All three of us gave the answer “check and see if there’s a fire.”
Where I lived in Michigan the fire department was ten miles away and could only respond to one fire at a time. If you called the fire department out on a false alarm, not only could you deny service to someone who needed it, there was a fookin’ big fine, so all parents taught their children to check for a fire first.

They no longer take the most recent versions of the SAT. They have judged them to be more vocational tests rather than IQ tests (the same goes for recent versions of the ASVAB).

The mayor of Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, has said its health system could collapse as demand grows for emergency beds to deal with coronavirus cases.

Until we moved here, I rarely went to any meetings. (Mensa was originally founded on the idea that people are scattered so they could stay in touch through mail, newsletters, and national magazines. That worked well for me when I was in the Navy.)
The only meeting I ever went to before moving to Nebraska was decades ago when I threw a party for the Jacksonville Mensa group. (The reason: I lived at the beach in Jacksonville Beach. Turns out lots of people wanted to come.)

Ninety years ago on May 15, 1930, Ellen Church led the first group of what were then called “stewardesses” on a Boeing Air Transport — now United Airlines — flight. Church and three other young women served as flight attendants on the trek from San Francisco to Chicago, which took 20 hours and 13 stops for 14 passengers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — When Jake Bland, with Hometown Hauling, noticed a woman hadn’t put out trash in more than two weeks, he knew something was off.Instead of ignoring the small observation, Bland, the company’s operations manager, asked dispatch to call the customer.
Bernice Arthur took Bland’s call and immediately searched for the woman’s information. What Arthur learned about the 90-year-old woman devastated her.
“She just didn’t have nothing to eat,” Arthur said, “and that’s why she had no trash to put out there.”
For more than two weeks, the elderly woman had no way to leave her home or get groceries amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She was running out of food, and Hometown Hauling decided it wanted to help.
“She has no family, nobody,” Arthur said. “I said, ‘You do have a family now.’”
Bland helped compile a list of groceries and went shopping. He then personally delivered the groceries to the woman, whom they call “Mrs. W.”
The local garbage company paid for everything.

When it first appeared that daughter #1 could get into MIT, when she was a junior in high school, I was naturally very excited. Her mother much less so. During a long-distance phone discussion, she said, “Gee, I don’t know about her going there, Jimmy. They say all the boys there are gay.”
I was astonished at her bizarrely skewed priorities, but instead of delivering a lecture on gossip, generalization, homophobia, etc. I merely said, “Ok, is this a problem? Sounds like a perfect place for her to me.”
She said, in disgust, “You just can’t take anything seriously can you?”
I just shook my head and hung up.
When I was 16, I took a Junior Engineering Testing Service test when we lived in Georgia. Summer, 1972. I scored in the 97th percentile. We moved that August back up to Fairfax, Va, where I finished my last two years of High School (W.T.Woodson Cavaliers!). The next month I got a letter from MENSA inviting me to join.
I circular filed it. I wanted to be a student, not an egg head. I’ve known a lot of people who were really, really smart in my life, and quite a few of them couldn’t change a tire if you handed them a jack and a lug wrench.
When I went to college, I entered Tulane with an idea to be a bio-medical engineer. That lasted a semester. Hated the curriculum. Realized I was a skilled generalist guy and not someone who was interested in “focusing down” on minutia.
So I majored in Geology, minored in theater, and then went and flew jets in the Air Force for a few years. While I was there I discovered I was a cool customer when things went wrong (things often went tits-up). Didn’t panic, went through the checklists, got really analytical as to what was happening and how to fix it.
After I got out of the service, I worked as wellhead geologist, offshore, and then as a consultant on high-pressure, deep drilling projects.
It was always about solving problems and keeping us out of trouble. Tore my back out in a rig accident, got a lumbar laminectomy, and went into environmental geology.
Learned shallow groundwater dynamics, vertical contaminant flow based on contaminant density, and vapor intrusion models for chlorinated solvents. Ended up spending my 16 years working as an emergency response coordinator trying to keep things blowing up and killing people. Never had a fatality after an initial incident. Nor a serious injury.
This is just to say there are several kinds of genius. I got yanked out of my fifth-grade class in my neighborhood school and transferred into the first “Gifted Program” in the Fairfax County Public School System. I was comfortable with many of the other kids, but some were just weird. Twidgets.
I’m really good at calmly reviewing a large chaotic situation and seeing necessary immediate reaction, looming bottlenecks, and fixes.
I understand Schroedinger’s cat, but I quite frankly don’t give a fuck whether it’s there or not. I’ll leave that to someone who is into that shit. I have always been into real world grit. Always will be.

Those two-seat Tutor trainers went into service in 1960, and they have a side-by-side cockpit and the ejection seats are ballistic, meaning there is basically a mortar round under you butt that blows you out of your seat. I mentioned downstairs that I hoped they had upgraded the seats with rockets to get you some more altitude (thus time for ‘chute deployment), but no, they had the original equipment, which in a low-altitude ejection is just a killer.
An old classic line in pilot training is “stall, spin, crash, burn, die, coming ‘round the ninety”. Which simply means that if in a turn your wings get to 90 degrees to the ground, you have no lift. The nose falls straight down. Stall. Out of control until you get enough speed to control the plane. That’s okay if you have enough altitude. If not, you have to eject. But if you eject and you don’t have a modern rocket-assisted seat, you are probably gonna die.

Texas’s runoff primary is coming up in July, so Democrats and civil libertarians are looking for a quick resolution to the vote-by-mail case working its way through the Texas courts.
The Texas Supreme Court on Friday temporarily put on hold an expansion of voting by mail during the coronavirus pandemic.
Siding with Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Supreme Court blocked a state appeals court decision that allowed voters who lack immunity to the virus to qualify for absentee ballots by citing a disability. That appellate decision upheld a lower court’s order that would have allowed more people to qualify to vote by mail. The state’s Supreme Court has not weighed the merits of the case.
AG Ken [accused felon fraudster] Paxton argues local officials must use his reading of Texas law regarding disability and mail voting and not what the plaintiffs are arguing. The legal wrangling has gone on for three days, resulting in multiple interpretations of the disability voting statute.
Texas law defines disability as a “sickness or physical condition” that prevents a voter from appearing in person without the risk of “injuring the voter’s health.”
Democrats and civil libertarians are arguing that susceptibility to the virus counts as risk to a voter’s health. Paxton argues Travis County allowing “anyone” to request a mail ballot contravenes Texas voting law.
Paxton is also arguing that District Court Judge Tim Sulak incorrectly interpreted the law, saying “fear” is not a valid reason to request a ballot under Texas law. Judge Sulak did not rule based on an assertion of “fear” but on susceptibility of catching the virus.
The order from the state Supreme Court blocks the district court judge’s ruling while appeals continue. The court will hear arguments on whether Judge Sulak erred and abused the court’s discretion on Wednesday.

It does have to do with intelligence, but nothing to do with decency, ethics, or education (he dropped out of college to pursue acting).
The overwhelming majority of members of high-IQ societies do not go around telling you what they scored, even to others in the same society. To those outside such a society they may say they’re a member or talk about the things they do, but not about their specific score on a test.
Most standard IQ tests top out around 160-165, so Mr. Woods’s claim of 180 is questionable. The only source for Mr. Woods’s claim is Mr. Woods. It has been repeated by the media (especially media which covers celebrities), but he has provided no evidence of it (for example, the results of a proctored IQ test).
Lots of people claim to have high IQs, but “I think I have a high IQ” is not the same as having a proctored test by a professional trained in that area (a psychologist).
It’s not always the celebrity who makes the claim though: Sometimes the celebrity media makes the claim up out of whole cloth.
For example, there was a stir when Huffington Post made the claim Shakira is a “genius” because she has a 140 IQ as published by Mensa UK.
Mensa UK has no such published figures; Mensa does not publish them.
Mensa International refutes recent press stories (Goes to Mensa International, debunking the so-called celebrity list which included James Woods)
American Mensa, Ltd. used to give the score to members when they took a Mensa-proctored test, but the American Psychological Association stopped Mensa from doing that, only permitting “accepted” and “not accepted” now. Mensa requires a four-year degree to proctor a test, but not a degree in psychology.
After the HP post was debunked, they updated their article to claim Mensa “denies” they released Shakira’s scores. No other outlet ever updated or corrected their articles about her, James Woods, Madonna, &c.

I’ve been up to Mt. St. Helens once, and it’s a most imposing sight, even all these years later. Half the mountain blasted away, trees for tens of thousands of acres blown down even now - and rivers/streams dammed up by the flows. When I was there, they were worried about the humpback, a new magma chamber rising through the mountain, and it steams and seethes even now.
And then I remember that Mt. Rainier is also an active volcano just 70 miles from Seattle/Tacoma, and if it goes, we’d see major destruction through the greater Sea/Tac region, including mudflows all the way to the hearts of these cities.

As the CBS Sunday Morning reports noted, the USGS wanted to push back the no-go zones even further, but the state governor refused to deal with it. The overwhelming majority of those killed were outside the exclusion zone, but within the areas that the USGS wanted to include.
Once again, not listening to the experts had dire consequences. The remarkably low loss of life considering the size and scope of the eruption is due entirely to the USGS issuing those warnings in the weeks leading up to the eruption.

Once the technology is rock solid, they’ll have to figure our all the legal aspects. There’s basic road rules/regulations of driving. There’s questions of liability - not just for insurance coverage but things like negligence and design/manufacturer defects. I can come up with a fact pattern fairly easily that would raise all sorts of legal questions I suspect many of not thought about (I’m sure there are lawyers at these companies who have thought about them, but I’m also pretty sure their suggested results are not what legislatures and judges would be on board with).

Another point on the electoral college, though I feel like I’m preaching to the choir on this:
The Founders created a system of indirect representation. Senators were selected by state legislatures; electors were as well. If there were elections for electors, the states had districts for electors. Regardless, the system quickly changed and we had a direct election system placed on top of an indirect election that still had some terrible fucking flaws.
Unless you believe that the states qua states should have representation in the federal government (and I think that’s a questionable concept at best), rather than the government representing the actual people, then there is no good argument for keeping the electoral college.

Unless you believe that the states qua states should have representation in the federal government (and I think that’s a questionable concept at best), rather than the government representing the actual people, then there is no good argument for keeping the electoral college.
I would support keeping it with two basic changes: for one, each state’s electors reflect their share of the population and not their representation in Congress, and secondly, it would only kick in if no candidate wins a clear majority of the popular vote.

LA county and some of the cities that have their own health departments (like Long Beach) are requiring masks for customers entering essential businesses. It’s not just a business decision in those locations. I believe it is a business decision on occupancy issues, still - some stores are limiting occupancy, others, I’m not sure about.
As for “you can’t ask me for proof”, that is… and I’m sure this will shock you… not true. HIPAA doesn’t apply to customers in a business. It only applies to health care clearinghouses, employer-sponsored health plans, health insurers, and medical service providers that engage in certain transactions.
Moreover, as a general rule, when you put your health conditions at issue, people are allowed to ask about them. This happens in litigation all the time. Someone claims disability discrimination, the employer/defendant is allowed to ask questions about it. Same thing would happen in these cases.
Oh, and the ADA doesn’t apply to people without disabilities.

LA county and some of the cities that have their own health departments (like Long Beach) are requiring masks for customers entering essential businesses. It’s not just a business decision in those locations. I believe it is a business decision on occupancy issues, still - some stores are limiting occupancy, others, I’m not sure about.
As for “you can’t ask me for proof”, that is… and I’m sure this will shock you… not true. HIPAA doesn’t apply to customers in a business. It only applies to health care clearinghouses, employer-sponsored health plans, health insurers, and medical service providers that engage in certain transactions.
Moreover, as a general rule, when you put your health conditions at issue, people are allowed to ask about them. This happens in litigation all the time. Someone claims disability discrimination, the employer/defendant is allowed to ask questions about it. Same thing would happen in these cases.
Oh, and the ADA doesn’t apply to people without disabilities.

The electoral college is actually cancelling votes everywhere. If you’re a Democrat in Wyoming or Utah, there’s no point in you voting for president, because what difference does it make if the Democrat loses 60-40 or 55-45? If you’re a Republican in California or New York, it’s the same scenario.
If it’s a popular vote, then Democrats closing the gap in Wyoming and Utah matters. Same with Republicans in California or New York. In fact, this might actually be more beneficial to Republicans because there are more lost votes in big states than there are in smaller states.
The EC is the ultimate in gerrymandering. Obviously, the Republican objections are solely because they believe they will be consigned to a permanent minority status if they have to win a majority of the popular vote. So they adopt any position or argument that guarantees them control of the government.

Sculptor Sophie Prestigiacomo reflects our ongoing and tense dialogue with nature with her swamp creatures in the Marshes Nature Reserve of Séné in the Gulf of Morbihan in France. It began with two mysterious beings a few years ago, and after they departed, a recent crowdfunding campaign to bring eight total to the reserve. Or as the campaign stated (as translated from French): “more numerous, more curious and probably convinced by the first visit of their two ambassadors, there was a relationship tie with the human species.”
