Trump Says He’s Taking Hydroxychloroquine but Nobody Can Tell if He’s Lying

Politics • Views: 21,470

YouTube

Just another absolutely whacked out moment from the endless clown show of the Trump administration, as Donald Trump suddenly springs the “news” that he’s been taking the untested (for COVID-19) and dangerous drug hydroxychloroquine for a week, presumably as a preventive measure although he never made that clear.

Immediately, everyone has questions. Is he lying? Trying to make some money somehow? Just as nutty as a squirrel in a cashew tree? Getting a sick thrill from manipulating his gullible followers, even risking their lives rather than admit he was wrong?

All of the above?

President Donald Trump claimed he is taking daily doses of hydroxychloroquine, a drug he’s long touted as a potential coronavirus cure even as medical experts and the US Food and Drug Administration question its efficacy and warn of potentially harmful side effects.

Speaking at a meeting of restaurant executives, Trump said he began taking the antimalarial drug after consulting the White House doctor, though stopped short of saying his physician had actually recommended the drug.

The admission was a dramatic development in Trump’s attempts to promote hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus, which began earlier in the outbreak and has been met with resistance from medical professionals.

I posted this originally on the last thread, but I CL’d myself. Plus, this is more relevant here.

Over the weekend, I mentioned that I got into what I thought was a low key argument with a Facebook acquaintance who around 5-6 months pregnant about mask wearing. She is against it, and has taken to posting a lot of COVID conspiracy theory lately.

“Did she post the Pandemic intro video?” you ask. Oh, you silly goose! Of course she did.

I’ve been in a weekly Zoom workshop with this woman for four or so years. A genuinely lovely person who is very excited about being a first time mom. That said, I’m in NJ. The state as a whole has taken a beating, and although here in the southern part it’s not as bad, we’re still taking our licks. My town leads my country for COVID deaths, and there’s two facilities within 10 minutes walking distance that have lost 14 people as of three weeks ago. That number is probably higher now.

Plus, my neighbor has lost two relatives to the disease. So there’s some real world consequences a stone’s throw from my happy little slice of suburbia.

So, while I was polite and posted my reasons above why mask wearing is essential, it apparently did not go well. I will cop to making a passive-aggressive “You need to do what’s best for your family” dig. I found out from a mutual acquaintance that she posted some sort of COVID CT bullshit, and then apparently nuked her whole FB account.

The corker is that one of our Zoom partners is a LA-area doctor who’s been doing 18 hours days fighting COVID. My suggestion that she talk with a doctor who would contradict the bullshit may also have not gone over well.

Is it my business that she doesn’t want to wear a mask while pregnant? At the end of the day, no. That said, if said COVID CT bullshit crosses my feed and I happen to see it, well, you don’t get a pass for spreading potentially deadly misinformation.

I don’t feel great about the whole exchange, but goddamn it, I’m done with “Everyone’s allowed to have an opinion, man.” Wrong is fucking wrong.

I can’t say this is all of the reason he’s doing this, but it strikes me that it’s the perfect way to avoid responsibility while asserting a right to take credit.

Physicians aren’t going to prescribe the meds to people on a whim as a prophylactic, and as treatment it’s only being used as a last resort in some cases where it may or may not be a contributor to recovery. Anecdotes and urban myths about its efficacy will travel faster than clinical work saying that it doesn’t work (or works conditionally), so the idea that it has value can be floated in the popular information sphere of social media.

It’s therefore safe to characterize as a miracle drug that Trump has found for his people, but that a conspiracy is keeping from them.

Trump’s baffling with bulkshit.

He’s claiming that he’s taking a drug that has shown no benefit in dealing with covid19. Not for those showing symptoms. Not for anyone trying to prevent covid19.

He’s spewing bulkshit. No one knows what they hell he’s taking, let alone what other drugs he’s on. He’s just spewing nonsense and knowing some of it will stick because Fox will predictably regurgitate, except this appears to be a bridge too far for Cavuto, who called out Trump for claiming to be taking it now.

Does he have it? Is he covering for the fact he’s got it?

No one fucking knows, and no one trusts anything coming out from Trumpworld either. We just know that a lot of people in Trump’s orbit have gotten it. Trump doesn’t mask or social distance. That increases chances he and the rest of Trumpists are exposed and get it.

OK, I am not surprised Trump has stated he is taking hydroxychloroquine, supposedly prophylactically.
And, the statement released by his physician definitely makes me believe the doctor doesn’t exactly agree with it.

Now, what does make me raise an eyebrow is that he has stated that he’s taking it daily.
As an anti-malaria prophylactic it is usually taken weekly. I know I took chloroquine weekly. And, was always told if I couldn’t remember if I had taken my weekly dosage to wait until the next regular dosage day rolled around. When I was in Honduras everyone took their “pinks” on Tuesday. They would have a huge jar that the Mess Hall headcount desk for everyone.

re: #36 lawhawk

Somewhere in here I think it should be noted that Trump cannot accept that something he said could be wrong…or require leavening with conditional statements or context…and he is returning to hydroxychloroquine as a kind of loyalty test: either you agree that it’s a good idea that cannot be questioned or you’re against him.

I mean, he could be taking it and that would not actually make it a better choice, from a clinical standpoint, for everyone else, but Trump’s whole thing is that nothing is true beyond his assertion of its validity…so if he does it then everyone else has to comply.

Trump’s so busy reading his PDBs and briefings from health care experts that he’s spending his entire evening watching Fox and spewing nonsense on twitter.

His fuckups get worse and worse, and his base doesn’t give a shit all while Fox continues serving up his favored agitprop.

That Cavuto went off script shows just how closely tied Trump’s outlook is to his coverage on Fox. The moment the propagandists turn on him, he’s well and truly fucked there.

Hannity and Ingraham are going the extra mile lying for Trump tonight - trying to claim Obama’s H1N1 response was somehow magnitudes worse than Trump’s covid19 response, even as we’re watching Trump’s death toll soar past 90,000 while there were ~10,000 H1N1 deaths. That’s a 9-1 ratio. But we’re supposed to think Obama did worse?

Trump inherited a strong economy and crashed it on his failed response. Obama inherited a shitty economy, dealt with a pandemic, and stabilized the economy and protected health for Americans simultaneously.

Yeah, the Fox propagandists are working overtime and then some.

Question…… There was a Snakeoil that used to be sold back in the 80’s. You’d see it for sale at fleas markets and truckstops. It wand suppose to help arthritis and other things and I think it was a liniment. The problem was it was actually a chemical
solvent. Lots of controversy……. Anyone remember what that stuff was? I thinK MeatMouth was a proponent of it.

Not snake oil, although it could be misused. DMSO. The best solvent. If something is on your skin, and you add DMSO, it will take it through. The best anti-inflammatory. We used it with the horses. Externally on injuries. On newborn foals that appeared to have suffered hypoxia in the birth process, we used it IV. I certainly have used it on my own sore joints and muscles. Look up veterinary uses. We were told by vets that it never got research funding, because no one could make money on it. We kept it on hand at all times. There is a milder form: MSM. Still very good as an anti-inflammatory.

“Republican Rep. Roger Marshall, an obstetrician who is running for Senate in Kansas, said he feels that using hydroxychloroquine as a preventive measure will minimize the risk or impact of the coronavirus. Mr. Marshall said he is taking it ‘prophylactically’ himself, as are his parents, siblings and wife,” The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

“I would encourage any person over the age of 65 or with an underlying medical condition to talk to their own physician about taking hydroxychloroquine and I’m relieved President Trump is taking it,” he said.

Uh negatori on that Roger. I don’t want to take a dirt nap…for at least another 20 years…

I say, “What if we CAN take four more years of this?” What has Trump normalized over the past four years? What will he and his Republican co-conspirators normalize next? I’m convinced there will be a nuclear “incident”, and the press will triangulate the crap out of it to make it seem that it was a planned incident, and more importantly, a justified one.

re: #144 Jebediah, RBG

DMSO?

Sounds like it.

Medicine
Use of DMSO in medicine dates from around 1963, when an Oregon Health & Science University Medical School team, headed by Stanley Jacob, discovered it could penetrate the skin and other membranes without damaging them and could carry other compounds into a biological system. In medicine, DMSO is predominantly used as a topical analgesic, a vehicle for topical application of pharmaceuticals, as an anti-inflammatory, and an antioxidant.[20] Because DMSO increases the rate of absorption of some compounds through biological tissues, including skin, it is used in some transdermal drug delivery systems. Its effect may be enhanced with the addition of EDTA. It is frequently compounded with antifungal medications, enabling them to penetrate not just skin but also toenails and fingernails.

DMSO has been examined for the treatment of numerous conditions and ailments, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its use only for the symptomatic relief of patients with interstitial cystitis.[21] A 1978 study concluded that DMSO brought significant relief to the majority of the 213 patients with inflammatory genitourinary disorders that were studied.[22] The authors recommended DMSO for genitourinary inflammatory conditions not caused by infection or tumor in which symptoms were severe or patients failed to respond to conventional therapy.

A gel containing DMSO, dexpanthenol, and heparin, is sold in Germany and eastern Europe (commercialized under the Dolobene[23] brand) for topical use in sprains, tendinitis, and local inflammation.[24]

In interventional radiology, DMSO is used as a solvent for ethylene vinyl alcohol in the Onyx liquid embolic agent, which is used in embolization, the therapeutic occlusion of blood vessels.

In medical research, DMSO is often used as a drug vehicle in in vivo and in vitro experiments. However, when a researcher is unaware of its pleiotropic effects, or when the control groups are not carefully planned, a bias can occur; an effect of DMSO can be falsely attributed to the drug.[25] For example, even a very low dose of DMSO has a powerful protective effect against paracetamol (acetaminophen)-induced liver injury in mice.[26]

In cryobiology DMSO has been used as a cryoprotectant and is still an important constituent of cryoprotectant vitrification mixtures used to preserve organs, tissues, and cell suspensions. Without it, up to 90% of frozen cells will become inactive. It is particularly important in the freezing and long-term storage of embryonic stem cells and hematopoietic stem cells, which are often frozen in a mixture of 10% DMSO, a freezing medium, and 30% fetal bovine serum. In the cryogenic freezing of heteroploid cell lines (MDCK, VERO, etc.) a mixture of 10% DMSO with 90% EMEM (70% EMEM + 30% fetal bovine serum + antibiotic mixture) is used. As part of an autologous bone marrow transplant the DMSO is re-infused along with the patient’s own hematopoietic stem cells.

DMSO is metabolized by disproportionation to dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl sulfone. It is subject to renal and pulmonary excretion. A possible side effect of DMSO is therefore elevated blood dimethyl sulfide, which may cause a blood borne halitosis symptom.[citation needed]

Alternative medicine
DMSO is marketed as an alternative medicine. Its popularity as an alternative cure is stated to stem from a 60 Minutes documentary featuring an early proponent.[27] However, DMSO is an ingredient in some products listed by the U.S. FDA as fake cancer cures[28] and the FDA has had a running battle with distributors.[27] One such distributor is Mildred Miller, who promoted DMSO for a variety of disorders and was consequently convicted of Medicare fraud.[27]

The use of DMSO as an alternative treatment for cancer is of particular concern, as it has been shown to interfere with a variety of chemotherapy drugs, including cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin.[29] There is insufficient evidence to support the hypothesis that DMSO has any effect,[30] and most sources agree that its history of side effects when tested warrants caution when using it as a dietary supplement, for which it is marketed heavily with the usual disclaimer.

Veterinary medicine
DMSO is commonly used in veterinary medicine as a liniment for horses, alone or in combination with other ingredients. In the latter case, often, the intended function of the DMSO is as a solvent, to carry the other ingredients across the skin. Also in horses, DMSO is used intravenously, again alone or in combination with other drugs. It is used alone for the treatment of increased intracranial pressure and/or cerebral edema in horses.

When they closed Tulane stadium as an NFL venue, we used to play club soccer there. The field was AstroTurf. Man, that surface was hard, and it tore us up. Smooth, even, weather resistant, but it had no give. We had DMSO gel in the locker room which we would apply to calves and ankles after showering. Yes, you could taste it right away, and yes, you smelled like a garlic/rotten egg factory after you left practice.

But twenty minutes and a cigarette later (don’t judge me) it was gone. And it worked. It really took the sting that AstroTurf left you with after a practice.

I hated AstroTurf. Too damn hard, too grippy, and left you with road rash every single fucking day.

Look, a 7-year old Kia engine should not fail all by itself, unless you haven’t changed the oil or poured sugar in the gas tank since you bought it.

The engine itself is 1960’s tech. It has a gas tank, a fuel line, a gas pump, a fuel filter, and carburetor or injection system, and spark plugs that ignite the gas in the cylinders that make the pistons go up and down, turning the crankshaft and delivering the power, through the transmission, to make the car go forward. The spark plugs may be fired electronically by an engine module or by an old school distributor which is connected to a timing belt.

Given that your vehicle is only seven years old, I would suspect what you have is a dead engine control module, not a dead engine.

Of *course*, shysters want to tell you that it’s not an engine control module, but a dead engine.

But here’s a clue:

kiapartsnow.com()

That’s still a hit, but it’s a much more absorbable hit than going to a junk yard, finding a new engine, putting it into your vehicle, then realizing the engine control module was the problem in the first place. Good luck.

Priti Patel is a Tory, through and through. “End Free Movement:” I’m gobsmacked she says this out loud! That was a point of the old DDR!

There’s a lot of confusion about what “free movement” means in this context.

In full “free movement” is: “Free movement of labour(*), capital, goods and services inside the single market”.

((*) Later clarified to “free movement of people”, as you can’t have free movement of “labour” if dependents are not allowed to move with the “labourer”).

Patel’s fake ideological position is that “free movement” in that sense is discriminatory, it only applies to people from inside the single market. So replacing free movement by work visas for everybody from outside the UK is “fairer”.

Actually she’s just a xenophobic authoritarian scumbag.

Y’all might have missed this.

The related, closely-held enterprises known as the Green Family, Hobby Lobby and the Museum of the Bible are back in court. In the amusingly named “United States v. One Cuneiform Tablet Known As the ‘Gilgamesh Dream Tablet,’” the US government is suing for the forfeiture of a 6 inch by 5 inch clay tablet. This is not any old tablet, though. It’s a literary tablet with part of the Epic of Gilgamesh on it. The Green Family/Hobby Lobby/Museum of the Bible bought this tablet from looters for a cool $1,674,000.00 several years back. It was seized by the government from the museum in September 2019. Ultimately, it will be repatriated back to Iraq under a number of treaties to which the US is signatory.

nbcnews.com (news article)

justice.gov (DoJ press release)

justice.gov (court case, with picture of object in question on page 17)

Of course, this is another black eye to the closely held outfit that bought thousands of cuneiform tablets (again looted from Iraq, probably benefiting Al Qaeda) and had them brought to the USA as “tiles.” Or the same outfit that bought fake Dead Sea Scrolls. Or the very same outfit that purchased pieces of papyrus from an Oxford don who looted them out of a collection, which was news just last week. Yes, the very same.

I said last week (after the news about Obbink stealing papyrus from the Egypt Expedition collection at Oxford and selling pieces to the MOTB) that the MOTB ought to be dismantled, brick by brick. I’m really feeling that today.

And when you go down that road, how can you live in a shared society?

Apologist/Evangelist Ravi Zacharias died in Atlanta.

ajc.com

Of course he’s trending on Twitter. Unfortunately, he’s being lauded, which is annoying as hell, because he basically lied his way through life.

Steve Baughman is a San Francisco lawyer. He spent quite a bit of time tracking down Zacharias’ various fabulisms, such as that he had an earned doctorate and had taught at Oxford, among other things.

randalrauser.com (link to an interview)

More sleazily, Zacharias had a long-distance relationship with a woman in Canada, forced her into signing an agreement silencing her, and then proceeded to thwack her. I am hoping that with his death, the woman who was silenced can now speak.

raviwatch.com (that goes to Baughman’s site)

Frankly, Christian (read EVANGELICAL) apologetics looks horrible when it has to depend on these fabulists to defend it. No wonder their arguments suck. Whatever happened to faith?

Mr. Zacharias had cancer. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

Fabulist or not, apologetics arguments all stink anyway. It does make apologists look worse when they make crap up though. Zacharias made up his doctorate for the reason a lot of apologists do (or claim their doctorate in an unrelated field means their arguments should carry more weight): It’s for an appeal to authority.

It doesn’t work on atheists, who generally don’t care about the authority of the person but the strength of the argument.

Apologetics primarily exists to keep the faithful from doubting, not to convert people.

I find the worst to be the “these are the ten things you need to say to atheists to prove them wrong” or other such sermons (atheism is not a claim so it fails right there) or other such lists: We’ve already heard all of them. They only exist to convince the in-group they are “right.”

As if we weren’t already aware that certain wealthy people suck…

(Via NYT) Hundreds of thousands of New York City residents, in particular those from the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, left as the coronavirus pandemic hit, an analysis of multiple sources of aggregated smartphone location data has found.

Roughly 5 percent of residents — or about 420,000 people — left the city between March 1 and May 1. In the city’s very wealthiest blocks, in neighborhoods like the Upper East Side, the West Village, SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, residential population decreased by 40 percent or more, while the rest of the city saw comparably modest changes.

Some of these areas are typically home to lots of students, many of whom left as colleges and universities closed; other residents might have left to care for friends or family members across the country. But, on average, income is a strong simple predictor of a neighborhood’s change: The higher-earning a neighborhood is, the more likely it is to have emptied out.

Relatively few residents from blocks with median household incomes of about $90,000 or less (in the 80th percentile or lower) left New York. This migration out of the city began in mid-March, and accelerated in the days after March 15, when Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that he was closing the city’s schools.

“There is a way that these crises fall with a different weight on people based on social class,” said Kim Phillips-Fein, a history professor at New York University and author of a book about how New York changed during the fiscal crisis of the 1970s. “Even though there’s a strong rhetoric of ‘We’re all in it together,’ that’s not really the case.”

And not only did they skip town, they took the fucking virus with them.

My neighbour to the immediate north next door had a huge party with his co-workers last night in his backyard (in violation of state group orders). It went on very late into the night.

The house doesn’t actually belong to him; it belongs to a rancher who gives it as an in-kind payment to the foreman of his ranch hands. The fellow has been living there for about a year (and boy does he dislike my wife and me because liberal and atheist).

I sincerely hope no one comes down ill over there (especially my neighbour).

You know, in France we never had that whole missing TP thing (although, child of 1970-80s’s Britain that I am we bought extra just before lockdown, as well as two 25 Kg sacks of rice(*). Maggie would be proud of me).

So far what we’ve been missing in LIDL from time to time: fresh peppers, washing up liquid, sliced bread (still got baguettes and Italian loaves), baking flour.

Could get most of those things at slightly higher prices at the Portuguese primeur which is a little bit further away.

(* Our African side coming out. Two bags because my brother in law bought a bag of parboiled rice and everyone mocked him for not buying the Thai perfumed rice that my wife preferred. But we’ll eat the parboiled rice in case of emergency).

Hannity (accessory to Trump felony conduct), white nationalist Ingraham, Tipple Judge and all the rest aren’t broadcasting from NYC Fox offices, but the comfort of their homes in the NYC metro area. If they didn’t think this was serious, they could be broadcasting from Fox Studios. They could social distance within the studios. We’ve got local news networks that do just that.

Legionnaires’ Disease Could Breed En Masse During Pandemic, by Mike Smith, NPR IL. Oh, Yay.

A health advocacy group said a type of water-borne disease may be spreading at Illinois’ unoccupied workplaces.

Legionnaires’ Disease, which took 43 lives in Illinois last year, could make a comeback amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires’ Disease spokesperson Bob Bowcock explained neglected water systems in shuttered workplaces provide a perfect breeding ground for the Legionella bacteria, which carries the disease.

“If the building water system is not flushed out properly and properly disinfected and recommissioned, we could see a post-COVID-19 Legionella outbreak problem of major significance.”

Scientist using DMSO in lab. Be very careful not to get that shit on your hands, it’ll allow every toxin / toxicant around to enter your body. Wear gloves and use care.

Non-scientis —ooo, let’s use this chemical with no regard because it helps permeability of one thing I think is good…

We used gloves when putting it on a horse (or us), and the surface it was going onto had to be very clean. Or yes, any contaminant within reach was goin’ in.

Legionnaires’ Disease Could Breed En Masse During Pandemic, by Mike Smith, NPR IL. Oh, Yay.

State water standards here require businesses to either have a water operator on site or if small enough, one on hire.

Water standards are clear that systems should be flushed if unused for 30 days or more, from every spicket. In places like mine, if the r/o unit isn’t used in thirty days, it should be flushed.

Legionella will not be just a problem of businesses though. Any homeowner who shut down their house for thirty days or more is also at risk. Moreover, it’s more likely in towns without water treatment or private wells than towns which use chlorine in their water supply.

Sadly, a whole lot of these loony-lefties aren’t GOP-bots: this sort of shrill, burn-it-all-down “revolutionary” rhetoric (passed on, AFAICT, virtually unchanged since the 1960’s - who says lefties aren’t mindful of tradition??) is a staple of the online Left. Of course, it’s “magical thinking” as unrealistic as any Q-qwazy - and also, just as inherently contemptuous of political realities - but unfortunately, in the Age of the Internet, their influence, such as it is, can’t help but get magnified in the national discourse. One can only hope this doesn’t translate into any significant vote-shunning in the fall election.

These sort of folks are a shining example of “making the perfect the enemy of the good”: in pursuit of the perfect, being sure to slag the good, and insult it on every tweet they make several times a day.

One Cuneiform Tablet Known As the ‘Gilgamesh Dream Tablet,’” the US government is suing for the forfeiture of a 6 inch by 5 inch clay tablet.

It’s called that because the tablet is technically the defendant. It’s an In Rem case or an asset forfeiture case. Hobby Lobby has to prove the tablet is innocent of being contraband just like in typical cases you have to prove your assets weren’t involved in the drug trade.

Ah, someone in the prime of life who is so very self confident that he needs to assert dominance over the elderly and small children. How very, very manly.

Sad.

Maybe Joe Wilson could chime in on honesty. Or bill kristol on how American exceptionalism and war to that end is bad.

Faith died when the Republicans hijacked the churches back in the 70s.

I did miss it: late to my morning perusal of LGF. I really like it that that DoJ form says “Exhibit A - Image of the Defendant”. Can we call him “Gil” for short….??

So did nobody at the Museum Of The Bible ever check their “charter”, i.e. the “Thou shalt not steal” bit??

Last Thursdayism (alternately Last Tuesdayism or Last Wednesdayism) is the idea that the universe was created last Thursday, but with the physical appearance of being billions of years old. It’s also a counter to the creationism theory. Under Last Thursdayism, books, fossils, light already on the way from distant stars, and literally everything (including your memories of the time before last Thursday) were all formed at the time of creation (last Thursday) in a state such that they appear much older.

The debate on whether Last Thursdayism is true has raged on ever since the creation of the universe last Thursday.

Oh, I’m sure that won’t be a problem: after all, accurate dating of ancient artifacts can often be subjective and imprecise: as can be amply demonstrated from their invoices and provenance documents…..

BTW, thanks for linking those DoJ documents: even as dry as legal filings are, that complaint reads mostly like the screenplay treatment for an episode of some TV spy-thriller. I especially liked this bit:

18.
In or about March 2005, the Cuneiform Expert shipped the partial
tablet (hereinafter, the “Gilgamesh Dream Tablet”) across state lines to Princeton, New
Jersey where it was studied by a professor (the “Professor”). The Professor received the
tablet and studied it in Princeton, New Jersey for several weeks.

I wonder if the expert they contacted was “Professor Henry Walton Jones III”?
