Back from my little local grocery store. Well stocked. Few people (though some times of day are much busier.) Tomorrow: Costco, which will likely be a less pleasant experience.

The neighbors’ under construction house is getting its electricity hooked up as I type. Assuming they can get it inspected by the county, and get their driveway poured sometime soon, they’ll finally be able to move in. Which they should have done 2 months ago except that everything got shut down for a few weeks.

I received an E-mail from the Secular Coalition for America.

First-responders are on the frontlines fighting to keep us safe, while a large portion of the nation remains on stay-at-home orders, and other parts are slowly reopening (possibly too soon).

Meanwhile, our scientists are tirelessly researching the vaccines and treatments that will improve the situation and enable us to return to the normalcy that we are all longing for.

However, the religious right has once again reared its medieval head and has lobbied to limit the research that could potentially end this crisis.

How? Why? You guessed it—they’ve decided to use this pandemic to once again attack abortion.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, religious right groups, and various anti-abortion advocates recently sent a letter to the FDA asking them to “incentivize pharmaceutical companies” to not use embryonic stem cells in developing a vaccine, calling the practice “unethical.”

The Secular Coalition for America, along with our member organizations—American Atheists, American Humanist Association, Center for Inquiry, and The Freedom From Religion Foundation—have countered with a letter of our own, requesting that the FDA not “allow unscientific religious ideology to interfere with open scientific inquiry.”

Read our letter to the FDA

Researchers spend years, often decades, developing the tools and techniques that save and dramatically improve lives. Their hard-earned expertise is critical to ending this pandemic and we will not let the personal beliefs of a vocal minority water it down.

This is not the first attempt by the religious right to take advantage of COVID-19, nor will it be their last.

We will continue to fight alongside our members to ensure the government’s response to this crisis is driven by science and does not use our tax-dollars to fund religious activities.

Gee, what a shocker!

Actually, no: even though a lifelong civilian, I’ve always felt that, for all the “warrior” pump-up, and tough-talking aggressiveness they put out for public consumption, the main things the U. S. career military expect from the Executive leadership are respect and professionalism (well, that, and supporting military budgets). And for the first two, anyway, Trump just so obviously fails..
And even for the last point: despite all his gibberish about “Obama hollowed out the military”, career service people have to know that that’s bullshit.

From the Nebraska Democratic Party:

On his public Facebook page, Fremont School Board Member Michael Petersen congratulated the Class of 2020 and said, “You deserved better than the graduation remarks from Senator Ben Sasse. The racism, implying that our graduates are fat and lazy, disparaging teachers, and attacking the mental health profession are despicable.” He told Sasse in the post, “You owe the graduating students of Fremont High an apology.”

Most officers that I have known would go along with this statement by one of my favorite cartoonists:

It may come as a surprise to some of you to learn that I’m very conservative. But I’m not a *political* conservative.

I like to have data, and I carefully consider risk/reward analyses. I like science.
Political conservatism is just atavism with extra syllables and a necktie.

My Costco here in western NY has their act very much together. Good crowd control going in (and rarely much of a line), restricting the number of people in the stores, stock has been well maintained, and the checkout process is safe and speedy.

My Costco totally has its act together, but a lot depends on how many people decide to show up at any given time. So, yes, I could be pleasantly surprised, but I have a low tolerance for uncertainty, so for me in my day to day life, the second worst part of this whole thing so far is whether there will be a long line and whether they’ll have what I want. (The worst part is not seeing my kids/granddaughter. Yeah. As things go, I’m in pretty good shape.) Things do seem to be settling down here though.

We have released 21-second newsreel clip featuring the last known images of the extinct Thylacine, filmed in 1935, has been digitised in 4K and released.

I read an article in the Atlantic about the Thylacine and why it was hunted mercilessly to extinction: not that it was a large enough to be a serious threat to sheep, but because it had the ability to rear up on its hind legs, which scared the livin’ bejeezus out of the rather superstitious Irish peasant settlers…

Thanks. I’m more like 20 minutes from my Costco, but I’ve been known to do that too.
I think I’m just transferring general anxiety onto “what if it’s crowded at the store?” or “What if there’s no parking where I want to hike?” I suppose that’s as good as anything.

Something of a bombshell: Norma McCorvey, aka Jane Roe, switched sides on abortion in the ’90s. In a new FX documentary filmed before her death in 2017, McCorvey says she was paid to do so.

Not a black and white story. But with Republicans, always follow the money.

Saw the ads for this, including the “This is my deathbed confession” clip. I have to admit, I was holding my breath on what that meant. In retrospect, if McCorvey’s confession reinforced her 90s “switch”, it makes sense that conservatives would be be hyping this non-stop.

Thanks to you and everyone else, glad to know my instincts were right for a change and i’ll stick to the B&W.

As for the contents, up until now i’ve been posting them with accompanying text that wasn’t as part of the graphic, specifying the Trump administration’s negligence and incompetence (and occasionally referencing specific people like Mitch McConnell). I did it like this simply because I wasn’t sure about how much text to include in the graphic without ruining it, and figured less would work better than too much.

Would adding “Because of the Trump administration’s negligence” before the red text be enough?

With my personal knowledge of IRL and on FB real people who support Trump, I am not surprised at all. They have all drunk the Kool-Aid and see only what they want to see. They are fed lies on a daily basis and refuse to acknowledge anything that contradicts their worldview. I don’t know what would penetrate their minds — they are people who if they heard the Penguin’s remarks in Batman Returns would still support him, instead of turning on him as in the film.

re: #78 I Would Prefer Not To

James Fell ( fitness and nutrition smart ass, who I generally love) was all in the fat shaming part of this, which I think is bullshit. Trump is a fucking bully. Bullies don’t respond to decent behavior from others. Except to shit on it.

I’m an abuse survivor. You know what stopped it? A fucking baseball bat so I could get the fuck out of there alive. And then a team of dudes guarding me while I got my stuff out of there the next day. I didn’t kill him, but I damned sure didn’t feel bad for hurting him, and I backed down only when he did.

Fat shaming sucks, but I am tired of the lectures from people who never dealt with this level of bully. You can’t play by the rules with them because they will turn around and do it again. And again. The ONLY way to stop them is to hurt them. The sooner people get that, the sooner we can send bullies back under their rocks. And yes, I know we’re not talking about an actual physical fight, but the same shit applies. Fight back, directly, and be smart, hit them where it hurts. Nothing else will work. My body still bears scars from over 30 years ago as proof. And no man ever laid a hand on me in anger after that. Fuck being nice to anyone who could give a shit if my family and I die or not. Fuck right wing assholes, and fuck being considerate of their fucking feelings.

Nancy Smash is not talking about Trump’s obesity to try to devalue him as a person (i.e., fat shaming). She’s simply saying that taking a certain drug while obese is probably not a good idea. The same way someone might suggest to me that, as a woman in my 50s, it’s probably not a good idea for me to take birth control. A statement that I wouldn’t consider ageist. A person saying it’s okay that I die because of my age. Well, that’s ageist.

“I’ll be there, we’re going after Virginia with your crazy governor? We’re going after Virginia. They want to take your Second Amendment away, you know that, right? You’ll have nobody guarding your potatoes.”

…said at a farmers/food relief event in VA, believe it or not… And I thought would be perfect for a mocking pic of Trump yelling at the kid mowing the lawn, and captioned “why aren’t you out guarding the potatoes?”. Is this linked in LGF somewhere, or an outside site?

Thanks to you and everyone else, glad to know my instincts were right for a change and i’ll stick to the B&W.

As for the contents, up until now i’ve been posting them with accompanying text that wasn’t as part of the graphic, specifying the Trump administration’s negligence and incompetence (and occasionally referencing specific people like Mitch McConnell). I did it like this simply because I wasn’t sure about how much text to include in the graphic without ruining it, and figured less would work better than too much.

Would adding “Because of the Trump administration’s negligence” before the red text be enough?

Or “Trump’s genocide count”

I think someone else mentioned that having two different fonts in one image is generally a poor idea. It ends up making the image look “cheap” or “off”. Sort of like it has been cobbled together.

Many of my anti-Trump friends and family are fearful that Trump will be re-elected; that somehow all his negligence, cruelty, racism, treason will be overlooked and too many of our fellow Americans who aren’t Trumpsters but are not wired into the system will decide that he’s the preferable choice. My sister, who hates Trump as much as anyone here and is voting Biden, said that she saw a clip of Biden from ABC and that he looked frail and seemed to have dementia. Our brother has repeatedly tried the Biden senility argument with us, and my standard response is that I don’t care at all. The largest “religious” group to vote for Hillary Clinton was atheists/agnostics/nothing in particular (68%, and that represented a loss of two points from the McCain election). The second-largest was Hispanic Catholics, followed by African-American evangelicals. Every other Christian group broke for Trump.

The Council on Foreign Relations indicates based on Pew Research polling ahead of the next election, larger percentages of Christians will vote for Trump.

The most reliable voting block in the Democratic Party is “nones” (we know which party wants to outlaw us).

Try to stay with one font. Vary the size and the color. I would experiment with sans-serif fonts—they are generally easier to read. The shadow on the second line is a little too much.

Also, see if you can change the contrast of the background photo. A lighter contrast may work better. You need the background for emphasis, but the text is the primary message you are conveying.

Naaah, they’ll just dismiss this intel as a “Trump enemy statement”, and keep right on trying gin up some sort or other of “scandal” right up until Election Day.

And as long as they keep the points simple[minded] - i.e. ceaselessly and loudly jabber buzzwords like “Biden!” “Corruption!” and “Obama!”, our “balanced” (i.e., bothesiderist) media won’t let it go.

I originally thought the different fonts would help the emphasis on the casualty numbers. And i used that font (Times New Yorker) because I’d seen it used well in the past.

What do you say to this last version?

[Embedded content]

A bit too much shadow on the middle line, but this is the best version yet. The font is very readable yet it doesn’t dominate the design. This is a good discourse. Don’t worry. There’s less screaming than I have had with certain producers when I did this work regularly! ///

Perhaps I should have gone with “It’s beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas” instead. The whole supposed purpose of this email being declassified was that it would implicate Obama in a “conspiracy” to get Trump through going after Flynn. Instead, it shows that Obama insisted the DOJ and intel community approach the case “by the book,” which is stunningly refreshing in light of the current effort by Trump’s cronies to make a case for unspecified “crimes” against Obama.

In otherwords like a lot of this, it’s only effective with Trumpers who believe that Trump is the most wronged person ever and that number is shrinking.

Yeah tobacco and peanuts. We can grow potatoes here obviously but it was a bizarre comment but I don’t think Trump has ever actually visited a farm. Reminds me though, don’t sell Biden short on agriculture. Delaware may be a small state but it’s got a diverse economy. Anti-abortion people are saying this is a le. I’m of the opinion that it wouldn’t surprise me to learn she was being paid. That’s what these people do. They don’t care about women or children. It’s all about imposing their religious belief, no matter what others believe.

Basically to believe “Obamagate” at this point, you have to believe that the WH was so deep into a “conspiracy” against Trump that they not only allowed him to win, they then wrote up a whole bunch of documents that they knew Trump would one day declassify that showed they were running things “by the books.” And that the real evidence would be totally in the coincidental timing of those documents and some ridiculous texts showing federal employees having an affair.

Who cares? It is the same argument the creationists use about Darwin, he recanted (he didn’t, but it’s irrelevant) his theories on his death bed.

Evolutionary Theory would go on without Darwin; women’s right to freedom of choice goes on without the instigator of Roe v. Wade.

Deaths: 224 (+4)
Doubling rate is 22-23 days now.

Nothing standing out in terms of distribution and how new cases are cropping up. Death rate ratios are all over if you look at them by township; 1 in 55 one place, but 17 of 55 in another for instance. Overall it’s killing 10% of the infected based on these stats.

I’ve stayed out of this one so far because I used to be morbidly obese and am right on the verge of having a “normal” BMI now so I understand both sides of this thing.

Not morbid, but definitely Obese. I’m under no illusions that this state is in anyway healthy, and if there was a medication I shouldn’t be taking, I wouldn’t claim hate speech or some shit for someone pointing that out.

That said it’s not OK to constantly berate me about being in this state either, regardless of being out of a concern for health. That’s also not what’s happening here.

My wife notes she is morbidly obese. She says she does not see it as a slur.

Her issue is medical: she used to weigh about what I do, but her car wreck and long coma messed up something in her metabolism that she actually was gaining weight in her coma.

She thinks Pelosi was on the money.

Has McSally ever actually won an election in Arizona?

Nope not statewide.

Martha’s run for Congress three times: 2012 (lost to the D by 2400 votes), 2014 (won the seat by a whopping 167 votes on recount), and 2016 (won handily). Then, of course, her loss to Sinema in 2018: and the Senate seat as consolation prize.

From what I’ve read, it seems like McSally just isn’t all that popular in AZ: her “success”, AFAICT, is that she is a good Machine Republican, relatively young/attractive (with a military record), and is somewhat less of an utter deranged wingnut like other AZ GOP favorites like Kelli Ward and Joe Arpaio.

So no wonder that Mark Kelly’s polling is (excuse the expression) in orbit….

In yet another assault on checks and balances, President Trump abruptly removed the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) independent watchdog late Friday - the same night he announced plans to fire the State Department Inspector General (IG). At DOT, the acting IG was overseeing a high profile investigation of Secretary Chao’s alleged favoritism benefiting her husband Senator Mitch McConnell’s political prospects, but has now been replaced with a political appointee from within the agency. The acting IG’s ouster calls into question the future of the Chao-McConnell investigation, other critical oversight, and whether the watchdog was dismissed for unearthing damaging information. COVID-19 is taking its toll on our nation and on our people. More than 83,000 Americans have passed away, 1.4 million have been infected, and 36.5 million are unemployed. This pandemic is impacting every aspect of American life.

But somehow, Senator Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans say they have “yet to feel the urgency of acting immediately” to address this unprecedented public health and economic crisis. I could not disagree more — Congress must continue in our efforts to rebuild the economy and help the American people get back on their feet. …

This led me to try and find good photos of Sasse’s city of Fremont.
I couldn’t find any - the only ones on Google are from when the whole city was flooded a year ago.

I broadly like where you are going with this.

Here is what I would do. Only use two colors. For the greatest impact make only the word “9x,xxx Dead” in the red-orange font, put those in the center of the image on their own line. Make that line a larger point size.

I would also only use two font sizes. I’d also avoid filling the image with too many words. You want “Trump-Covid” - “X-Dead” - “Would fill this stadium” as essentially the only take-aways.

McIntosh faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, making terroristic threats, arson and child endangerment, according to court documents.

TL;DR the police were called when a neighbour tried to intervene in a domestic disturbance involving the man and his child. The man threw a brick at the neighbour and injured him.

The police arrived and found the child nude and doused in gasoline. They found the man after a brief search and arrested him.

He is being held in Cambria County Prison in lieu of $75,000.

I thought this was about the November ejection which is federal.

I think that’s a typo there, but we should keep it as it’s perfectly apt….

But I too noticed that that decision (flowery rhetoric notwithstanding) was from a federal court, so maybe the “national” aspects DO apply.

Obama’s people will come in loaded for bear, because they know how to do that. I can see many, many, many lines of questioning being cut short, because the Gym Jordans and Matt Gaetzes will get their asses handed to them by competent peole. Over and over.

re: #338 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

I thought this was about the November ejection which is federal.

It’s about Travis County allowing voters to apply for absentee ballots due to the epidemic. Ken Paxton argues this violates Texas law, specifically about disability.

The case was ruled by a Texas district judge, not a federal judge.

The section over which the argument resides is this:

In their advisory, state officials said, “the Election Code defines ‘disability’ to include ‘a sickness or physical condition that prevents the voter from appearing at the polling place on election day without a likelihood of needing personal assistance or of injuring the voter’s health.’ (Sec. 82.002).”

austinmonitor.com

Democrats and civil libertarians argue that the danger of catching the coronavirus counts as disability under Texas’s voting statutes. Paxton argues that is not the case.

Convenient since you can’t easily use all the money on a pre-paid debit card.

That and Trump is so fookin’ needy.

I don’t want a debit card, there is almost nowhere here I can use one. (I imagine that would piss off a lot of people here.) I want the cheque, which I might get someday.

Also, I wonder if Moscow Mitch and his posse have really thought through the possible blowback from “inviting” Obama-Administration officials up before the Senate, and have them keep bringing up sound-bites like “Trump Campaign” and “Russian interference” in every other sentence. I realize the official GOP Party Line is that the “Russian collusion” stuff was all a “hoax” (since King Orangeanus has pronounced it so), but I really question their wanting to bring this issue back up - before the election….

I get the impression this is apologia for the faithful to keep them in line. They’re not actually going to hold hearings (McConnell is not stupid, he’s evil). But stringing along “we’ll hold hearings soon” like it’s the Second Coming the 27% will stay engaged and enraged.

And of course there will be the contrast—hopefully—of Obama Dems actually showing up for hearings in contrast to Trump’s lackeys who obeyed his orders to ignore subpoenas.

Two weeks mandatory (by law) self-quarantine if I go into MI (got out about a week ago) and I have to go back again in a few weeks.

I’m a homebody but that second week was hell. No grocery store (which is my only real outing), can’t even go outside except in my back yard. It made me appreciate people who are used to going out all the time.

Up to a million dollar fine if they catch you leaving your house. Two emails reminding my I couldn’t go out (and the fine if I do) and a phone call from the government also reminding me.

My UI payment from Nevada goes to a BOA prepaid debit card. Nevada recommends that you transfer that money into your checking account to avoid any of BOA’s fees. Failing that, use the cash back option with every purchase as you don’t have to pay a fee on that either. Advice I don’t think BOA really appreciates.
