Been a while since I’ve created a page. I figured there was more than enough going on hereabouts, and besides, I find myself consumed by deep depression these days more often than not. Guess I’m at Stage 4 of Elaine Kubler-Ross’s grief cycle.

But this little tidbit jolted me out of my personal journey towards Acceptance.

Republican Jo Rae Perkins, now the official challenger to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) in November, acknowledged her Tuesday night primary win with a proclamation of her solidarity with acolytes of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

“Where we go one, we go all,” she says in a Twitter video, brandishing a “#WWG1WG” sticker with the group’s motto in hashtag form.

“I stand with President Trump, I stand with Q and the team,” she continues. “Thank you anons and thank you patriots. And together, we can save our republic.”

And yeah, I get it, it’s Oregon, so Perkins probably has very little chance at winning. But that’s not the same as NO CHANCE.

I was talking to one of my coworkers this morning about the IG firings. His response was that he didn’t think that any president could really be controlled. It’s not Democrats that have given up on their party, it’s Republicans. And the only think keeping them voting for Republicans is they don’t want Democrats in charge.

But it does point out that one of the things we need to figure out how to do is to get Republican voters to actually hold their party accountable for its actions. Maybe something along the lines of “At least my party listens to my concerns and doesn’t try to play to my fears.”

Tarantual Hawk on Milkweed

These guys look scary and have a very painful bite. I had no fear that this creature would bite me. They love the nectar from Milkweed and pick tarantulas up and flip them on their back before injecting a single egg inside the abdomen of the victim. Oh, they then drag the paralyzed victim to an underground burrow where the egg will develop, hatch and then consume the insides of the tarantula and then leave the burrow. The circle of life has some unlucky victims!

I can’t really see someone who complains their wife is “unuseful” around the house because of stress/exhaustion from work as “heart’s in the right place.” Or thinks their wife “hysterical” after she gets upset that she’s been demoted because “they didn’t cut her pay.” He’s nuked her career because she wasn’t performing up to his standards at home and doesn’t get why she’s so upset about that.

I can only hope this is a parody, because if it’s real then it’s pretty inevitable that shit will hit the fan once she finds out the truth of her demotion. This marriage isn’t just doomed, odds are the company could see a huge lawsuit if she ever finds evidence that her boss demoted her for any reason not related to productivity or workplace behavior.

What did that mean? That we all needed to go back to college or go to trade school and get “useful” degrees because that was what was holding us all back. Even the guys with engineering/math/science degrees needed to go to a trade school because businesses wanted “practical experience.”

Oh, and how were we to afford this? “Tighten your belts!” Because it didn’t matter if you were living off bread and water two times a day, you needed to find a way to make that a single meal that stretched out if you wanted to achieve financial stability.

It was pure “Fuck you, I’ve got mine.” The assholes who’d gotten degrees back when public colleges were free/cheap and private college tuition might be covered by a part-time job were convinced that my generation just didn’t want to sacrifice enough to get that 9-5 job punching in at the union job that paid well enough to cover a home, 2 cars, and supported a family. And those that had gone through the hell of racking up tens of thousands in college loans to get those degrees…had gone to school for the “wrong” degree or just gone to the “wrong” school altogether.

Meanwhile, these same asshats thought that the biggest priority for the gov’t was to shore up home prices and get the markets back to pre-crash levels to save retirement funds. Why? Because creating jobs was less important than making sure that prior generations kept “theirs.”

I agree, though I’m a late-stage baby boomer myself. The previous Silent Generation and older Baby Boomers in power were already working on that by the time I was old enough to leave home (college was already beyond my reach).

Though the VA paid for my mother to go to college, by the time she graduated the famous conservative stagflation of the Seventies had set in and she could not get a job. Then the GOP snatched the college benefits for war orphan children.

That’s the thing, unlike the Reagan Recession, there was not Clinton Boom to follow up and recover most of the losses. Millennials who’d grown up being told that the biggest sectors of growth were those that demanded 4+ year degrees got out of college just to find out that the GR had wiped out white collar jobs just the same as blue collar jobs. There were no “recession-proof” jobs that weren’t already dominated by Boomers or Gen-Xers, who ensured that dominance by writing ridiculous requirements for “entry-level jobs” that said you had to have years of experience in a field before you could get a job in that field.

I still remember being told back in ‘08 that the ideal way to get a job was to go to local businesses and asking to speak to the manager, filling out an application, and then calling them back every day to see if they’d had a chance to look at said application.

Roads here are empty (well, emptier than usual).

How fucked are things in WI? The Guardian doesn’t even point out that the WI Supreme Court listened to oral arguments on the governor’s edict about in-person voting via video conference, but that the conservative majority voted against the edict because one of their own was up for reelection. And while he’d declared he would be recusing himself during the bid, as soon as he lost said bid, he immediately “unrecused” himself and has spent the time since enforcing one-party rule.

Ironically, the deadline on absentee ballots the Wi GOP won in the US Supreme Court probably disqualified more GOP ballots than Democratic ones.

COVID-19 news out of Texas:

Officials in Grayson County have confirmed the first death related to COVID-19 — a man in his 50s from Denison. Family members say he was a forklift operator at the Tyson Foods plant in Sherman.

Some employees at the plant say there have been nearly 300 workers there who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

It was last week when the Texas Department of Emergency Management tested every worker at the Tyson plant. But employees say while they are waiting to learn if they are positive, the outbreak at the Sherman facility keeps growing.

According to employees, some 1,000 tests have come back negative, but there are between 300-400 tests that are are still pending. Workers whose results are pending are allegedly still going to work, and those who test positive are notified on the job.

I’m not old as you know but I have been particularly worried about an aunt and uncle being vulnerable to Covid. The aunt lives in a nursing home and is 79. The uncle is a cancer survivor and 71. He’s also my godfather. I have friends and hell with my heart condition I myself might be vulnerable. Point for me is I don’t care how old someone is. Public health matters and we need to do all we can to stop the virus’s spread and help the sick. We shouldn’t sacrifice our loved ones so Trump can have the economy as a talking point.

Killing the old people for the economy isn’t a winning message.

This approach targets his (and all) Republican supporters.

Why target them? Sure they’ll take our done Dems, too, but more GOPers will get sick/die.

How is this a winning strategy?

Honestly? I think it’s a calculation that involves:

1) Still thinking COVID-SARS is just a bad case of the flu, so no biggie

2) Knowing that a good chunk of Republicans are literally willing to die for Trump and the party at this point

3) Not giving a shit what happens to his marks, aka, his supporters.

Trump wants a second term and he will do anything to get it. If people have to die so he wins, he’s cool with that. He and his people know this. Shit, I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime in the future, documents start leaking that say this was part of their strategy.

Number 2 is worrisome for me. I remember reading an article years ago about biological warfare. In it, there was a concern that someone like Al Queda would develop a virus, infect a follower, and then turn them out into the world as the ultimate guided missile.

It’s really hard not to look at Flu Klux Klan proponents this way.

Speed kills. People are able to drive even faster than usual because there were fewer drivers on the road, and that meant that when they came upon slower cars, they’d have to engage in emergency braking/maneuvering with predictable results.

And NYC had 2 pedestrian fatalities yesterday from drivers. First time in 2 months. That was the longest stretch where pedestrians weren’t killed walking across streets since cars first appeared in the City (and records kept).

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s a glorious day out there, even if it’s a little chilly this morning. But I expect there to be crowds out in the parks as people begin to emerge from the forced hibernation to stop covid19 spreading. Not as much social distancing, or masks out in the parks, and that’s going to enable this to spread once more.

We’re playing with fire, and we are going to get burned. No one wants to stay at home indefinitely, but without aggressive testing and far more screening and contact tracing, we’re going to be shut back down before we know it.

So of course the NYT runs a mess of a story claiming that we could have had 36,000 fewer deaths had Cuomo shut things down a week or two sooner than he did.

Um… yeah, except everyone from Trump on down was claiming that it was an overreaction and questioned Cuomo’s New Rochelle order as being fascist/overreaction.

Cuomo did respond slower than Newsom in CA. That’s true. By all of a couple of days.

Trump abdicated his role to protect the nation from all threats, foreign and domestic. He let this spread uncontrolled nationwide. He ignored the briefings and PDBs. GOPers downplayed this to the public, all while they were going to their stock brokers to cash in on the pandemic (Loeffler, Burr, etc.) Cuomo didn’t have the health experts that Trump has at his disposal and made the decision with incomplete information.

Trump had the ability to ramp up testing, use the WHO test and deliver them by the thousands to NY. He didn’t. NY had to scratch build a testing scheme to deal with the crisis that quickly spiraled out of control. Trump continued to believe that cases would soon be zero back in March. We’re now about to cross 100,000 dead Americans and he’s too busy calling for things to reopen to care.

Do those days make a difference? Absolutely. But Trump wasn’t demanding closures. He still doesn’t. He’s chafing at all the closures and wants things opened up even before cases have started declining in states.

Maggie’s doing Trump’s heavy lifting.

And pointing that out means that the Trumpists calling you a China lover come out of the woodwork (and make it easy for you to block).

OK, I read that NYT story about “avoidable” COVID-19 deaths, and while it’s not really that much of a “mess” (though citing figures up til May 3 makes it, by Coronavirus-pandemic standards, near-obsolete) - IMHO, the whole thing is an wasteful exercise in sharp-focus hindsight. Yes, of course, X number of deaths could have been avoided if the country (never mind NYC) had “locked down” on March 1st. And how many casualties would we have if the lockdown had happened on Feb. 15? Or Feb. 1? Sure: a Wuhan-style lockdown with severe travel restrictions and an obsessive testing regimen implemented by mid-February would probably have saved tens of thousands of lives. But that didn’t happen: AND WASN’T GOING TO HAPPEN. And sad as it is, the reality is that you can’t undo the past: all the should-have/could have hindsight “revelations” are good for is influencing (one hopes) future responses. Right now, we still have a semi-uncontrolled pandemic raging (which the still-existing paucity of testing merely aggravates) - we have to deal with the present.

And PS: Maggie Haberman can go fuck herself with the gratuitous Dem-bashing - as I recall, “Cuomo and DeBlasio” were no tardier than anyone else wrt the shutdown: I realize it was in the Ancient Days of two months ago, but by mid-March, the Federal Government was only just moving away from the “It’s all a hoax” line…..

I think it’s because drivers are also going faster and no longer have to manuever around rush hour traffic any more. I’m going to be pretty bummed when it goes back to normal traffic and things that come early come much more slowly

I went to a local Super Wal-Mart last night. I’d say about 30% of the people in there were wearing masks and, as before, most of them were minorities and seniors (I wore a mask). I did notice people in general were doing a reasonably good job with social distancing, better than the last time I was there.

I was unemployed from 2007-2010 and the very few job orders contained very specific requirements, almost as if they were customized to the CV of an overseas recruit who needed an H1B visa.

That too, but people don’t realize how much rush hour traffic slows things done. A lot of places don’t have the direct routes that allow for speed, so trucks have to wait in traffic with cars at inconvenient moments. It also helps that a lot of other trucks are being sidelined due to the companies being closed.

I remember that happening to me in 90, 91 - “You need experience to get a job to gain experience” - that’s why I ended up in the military. When I got out in 98, I had exactly the same experience as a professional software engineer (none), and had a job lined up when I left. Bust vs boom.

Edit: And I was looking for a job in 90 because I burnt out at my first attempt at college.

That too, but people don’t realize how much rush hour traffic slows things done. A lot of places don’t have the direct routes that allow for speed, so trucks have to wait in traffic with cars at inconvenient moments. It also helps that a lot of other trucks are being sidelined due to the companies being closed.

Yep. Aircraft and vehicles are built to be as light as possible for efficiency while maintaining just enough rigidity in their frames. Ram them into something solid and they’ll simply crumple and wrap themselves around it. (Which you can see from photos of a lot of auto and train accidents.)

And then you see movies where sliding train cars, truck trailers, etc. just slice through things like metal/concrete support beams, bridge abutments, etc. when a simple Jersey barrier would actually cause them quite a bit of harm and slow them appreciably (assuming they don’t flip over it first.)

I have to say this. AS much as I like and respect Hillary Clinton, Trump did benefit from decades of hostility towards her. Biden doesn’t have that. Another difference too is Clinton ran against candidate Trump and Biden is running against incumbent Trump. We know what Trump’s Presidency is like now and Clinton had it right but it’s always easier to argue based off of what can happen versus what has happened. I’ve always felt that Trump would be an uniquely disadvantaged incumbent even with a better economy.

Yes I am a Prime member. More for the video than “fast/free” deliveries. I also look to buy what I need/want locally before ordering online. What I can’t find locally I order online and while Amazon is a source, it’s not my only source. We as Democrats are used to generational candidates. Obama and Bill Clinton were that and I’d argue that JFK and Carter benefited from that too. But in uncertain times, a seasoned pro like Biden might be the best answer especially since he seems happy and eager to share the stage. Plus I think he’s going to be an executive that values the legislature as a co-equal partner of the executive branch.

To analyze bot activity around the pandemic, CMU researchers since January have collected more than 200 million tweets discussing coronavirus or COVID-19. Of the top 50 influential retweeters, 82% are bots, they found. Of the top 1,000 retweeters, 62% are bots.

The monitoring of tweets is ongoing and collections from Facebook, Reddit and YouTube have been added to the research.

Carley said multiple factors contribute to the surge. First, more individuals have time on their hands to create do-it-yourself bots. But the number of sophisticated groups that hire firms to run bot accounts also has increased. The nature of the pandemic matters, too. “Because it’s global, it’s being used by various countries and interest groups as an opportunity to meet political agendas,” she said.

One thing that separates Trump and it’s part of why he’s so awful is that he doesn’t lean on advice from his predecessors. Even when Hoover was still blamed for the Depression, Truman still talked to him. Obama is more popular than Hoover was in the late 40’s and early 50’s and Biden will talk to him. I think Biden should go with someone like Rice or Burns. But I’m not Biden. I just go based on who I see he has as his surrogates, people who are respected within their field, and people who I think are credible which is why I named Ambassador Yovanovich as someone I would like to see have a prominent role in the State Department.

One of the worst disasters in US history was due to the private dam owned by a sporting/hunting club failing after rainstorms.

Johnstown PA. Might have heard of it? It killed more than 2,000 people when the South Fork dam failed.

It was a privately owned and maintained dam. Except that it wasn’t properly maintained and it was enlarged without adequate steps taken to deal with heavy rains and how to protect the structure from being overtopped.

UPDATE:
More than half of all dams in the US are privately owned.

Not to mention the positive effect a respectful and professional SoS will have on our actual foreign relations: like, y’know, with other countries of the world….

Though the Trumpian approach to relationships with other nations (i.e. arrogant xenophobia mixed with self-righteous victimization, liberally salted with racism) is unfortunately, a political winner in a lot of places.

A short rant on this idea of Pence pardoning a just resigned Trump.

Putting aside whether it’s legal because, sigh, it probably is, unless there’s actual obstruction of justice going on….

Nixon was fully investigated. He was about to be impeached, and get convicted.
So he resigned (with encouragement).
Then Ford pardoned him.
Nixon and Ford did not ‘negotiate’ it in advance.
In fact Nixon was reluctant to accept it, then did agree to.

Trump, on the other hand, was impeached and not convicted.

He hasn’t been investigated for anything else. Because the Senate won’t. Certainly Barr and the DOJ won’t. And the entire admin won’t honor any subpoena from the House.

Forget whatever is in the news; it doesn’t count.

There is nothing identified or pending. No one’s looking at him for anything federal. There is no investigation of anything.

So what could Trump et al possibly think he needs to be ‘protected’ from with a preemptive pardon?

You don’t just pardon ‘just in case’ of some mythical future ‘witch hunt’.
(OK, maybe they do.)

He/they have to think he did something wrong that needs pardoning. (Yeah, like just one thing.)

The last time I was on the Ambassador Bridge they had metal plates down on the flat of the bridge because you could see through to what was beneath it… The ground and the water. The center was noon existent in many places. It was really scary and I wouldn’t go over that again for anything.

Biden has praised her and she’s been vetted for VP too. I think she would be qualified and capable for VP but I think Rice is better suited for a position for SoS since she’s really not a politician.

Just got back from the grocery store. Only about half of the customers were wearing masks. The Pepsi delivery guys were stocking the aisle and not wearing masks. The lady behind me in line was wearing a mask but came up close to me as I was grabbing my bags and her stuff was getting wrung up. I wish they had a mandatory mask policy, but I think many people in my neighborhood (working class democrats but stubborn) would balk at it.

Correct and I think pardoning Trump would be even more controversial than Nixon. Plus there’s definitely some state investigations that Barr nor the o pardon pen can’t help. I think this might be why he changed his address from NY to Florida.

But it’s what I’ve pointed out before. Trump’s belief in Peale’s “power of positive thinking” is really apparent during this crisis. Real braintrust, there: never stopped to think for a second that COVID-19 patients who are IN A FUCKING HOSPITAL are there because they are positively sick - and probably on ventilators/in comas?

(I don’t know how Michigan handles it, but here in NY, suspected Coronavirus patients who are “quarantined” are expected to isolate themselves at home, this saving hospital beds for actual disease cases)

Though I read “Michigan Militia”, so likely no “thinking” involved….
