It’s Come to This: QAnon Freaks Are Running for US Senate

Don’t laugh. We all thought there was NO WAY an obviously idiotic & incompetent narcissist could be President…
Culture • Views: 29,969

Been a while since I’ve created a page. I figured there was more than enough going on hereabouts, and besides, I find myself consumed by deep depression these days more often than not. Guess I’m at Stage 4 of Elaine Kubler-Ross’s grief cycle.

But this little tidbit jolted me out of my personal journey towards Acceptance.

Republican Jo Rae Perkins, now the official challenger to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) in November, acknowledged her Tuesday night primary win with a proclamation of her solidarity with acolytes of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

“Where we go one, we go all,” she says in a Twitter video, brandishing a “#WWG1WG” sticker with the group’s motto in hashtag form.

“I stand with President Trump, I stand with Q and the team,” she continues. “Thank you anons and thank you patriots. And together, we can save our republic.”

A sampling of some of the deranged bilge spewing out of her head-hole:

And yeah, I get it, it’s Oregon, so Perkins probably has very little chance at winning. But that’s not the same as NO CHANCE.

Here’s what the charming little QAnons have been up to recently:

Claiming Oprah Winfrey was arrested because of baby-eating wharrrgarble:

And this is literally the only good news coming out of the intersection of QAnon, Trump & Hydroxychloroquine:

Aw, let’s feed it to the little rascals and see what happens! They like it! Hey Mikey!

I was talking to one of my coworkers this morning about the IG firings. His response was that he didn’t think that any president could really be controlled. It’s not Democrats that have given up on their party, it’s Republicans. And the only think keeping them voting for Republicans is they don’t want Democrats in charge.

But it does point out that one of the things we need to figure out how to do is to get Republican voters to actually hold their party accountable for its actions. Maybe something along the lines of “At least my party listens to my concerns and doesn’t try to play to my fears.”

Severe thunderstorm watch extended to midnight MDT.

The National Weather Service hates my town. They never mention it when we’re in a warned area, unless it’s something like a tornado, then it’s “mainly rural areas of Morrill County.”

THIS INCLUDES THE CITIES OF ALLIANCE, ANGORA (population 1, unincorporated), BAYARD, BRIDGEPORT, BROWNSON (ghost town), CHEYENNE, GERING, HARRISBURG (unincorporated county seat of Banner County, population 100), KIMBALL, REDINGTON (population 8, one family running a wingnut Christian summer camp, unicorporated), SCOTTSBLUFF, AND SIDNEY.

My anti-vaxxer buddy already filled me in on Katy Perry and Hillary Clinton eating people and worshiping Satan at special Hollywood parties. Gee, I didn’t know Oprah was involved.//

Also, COVID is a hoax to bring down the economy, but in direct contradiction of that, it was a disease created in a Wuhan lab by a Fauci/Bill Gates alliance to control the world’s populations by implanting microchips during forced vaccinations.//

And here’s the eleventeen videos “that blow the lid off” that YouTube took down, but other like-minded patriots have republished because “they have proof” it’s all true! You HAVE to watch these!.//

Yeah, I’ve been listening to a lot of insufferable horseshit lately. Shit that in the past would send people directly to the loony bin. Now it’s considered all true and the favorite catch phrase is “blowing the lid off,” when in real life, it just blows. It’s plain fucking insane.

Tarantual Hawk on Milkweed

These guys look scary and have a very painful bite. I had no fear that this creature would bite me. They love the nectar from Milkweed and pick tarantulas up and flip them on their back before injecting a single egg inside the abdomen of the victim. Oh, they then drag the paralyzed victim to an underground burrow where the egg will develop, hatch and then consume the insides of the tarantula and then leave the burrow. The circle of life has some unlucky victims!

Sorry, when I think Democrat, I’m not associating xenophobic or militarist. In my experience, those are almost exclusively GOP DNA markers. The GOP fawns over the idea of military almost as much as they love gunhumping. (Taking care of veterans? Sending troops to die stupid deaths for stupid reasons? Not so much.) They squawk “God Bless the Troops!” like a parrot blurts out “Polly wants a cracker” - it’s practically compulsive.

It’s a well known trait of narcissists to project. Sort of an offshoot of gaslighting, ‘cept different. Gaslighting’s first cousin, maybe.

I can’t really see someone who complains their wife is “unuseful” around the house because of stress/exhaustion from work as “heart’s in the right place.” Or thinks their wife “hysterical” after she gets upset that she’s been demoted because “they didn’t cut her pay.” He’s nuked her career because she wasn’t performing up to his standards at home and doesn’t get why she’s so upset about that.

I can only hope this is a parody, because if it’s real then it’s pretty inevitable that shit will hit the fan once she finds out the truth of her demotion. This marriage isn’t just doomed, odds are the company could see a huge lawsuit if she ever finds evidence that her boss demoted her for any reason not related to productivity or workplace behavior.

My favorite bit during the Great Recession was being told by Boomer/Gen-Xer assholes that the solution to my generation’s financial issues was that we weren’t “attractive” to employers. What did that mean? That we all needed to go back to college or go to trade school and get “useful” degrees because that was what was holding us all back. Even the guys with engineering/math/science degrees needed to go to a trade school because businesses wanted “practical experience.”

Oh, and how were we to afford this? “Tighten your belts!” Because it didn’t matter if you were living off bread and water two times a day, you needed to find a way to make that a single meal that stretched out if you wanted to achieve financial stability.

It was pure “Fuck you, I’ve got mine.” The assholes who’d gotten degrees back when public colleges were free/cheap and private college tuition might be covered by a part-time job were convinced that my generation just didn’t want to sacrifice enough to get that 9-5 job punching in at the union job that paid well enough to cover a home, 2 cars, and supported a family. And those that had gone through the hell of racking up tens of thousands in college loans to get those degrees…had gone to school for the “wrong” degree or just gone to the “wrong” school altogether.

Meanwhile, these same asshats thought that the biggest priority for the gov’t was to shore up home prices and get the markets back to pre-crash levels to save retirement funds. Why? Because creating jobs was less important than making sure that prior generations kept “theirs.”

I agree, though I’m a late-stage baby boomer myself. The previous Silent Generation and older Baby Boomers in power were already working on that by the time I was old enough to leave home (college was already beyond my reach).

Though the VA paid for my mother to go to college, by the time she graduated the famous conservative stagflation of the Seventies had set in and she could not get a job. Then the GOP snatched the college benefits for war orphan children.

I am kind of surprised at the gen-xers unless they were privileged because we had to suffer through the late 80s recession right as a lot of us were getting out of high school or college.

That’s the thing, unlike the Reagan Recession, there was not Clinton Boom to follow up and recover most of the losses. Millennials who’d grown up being told that the biggest sectors of growth were those that demanded 4+ year degrees got out of college just to find out that the GR had wiped out white collar jobs just the same as blue collar jobs. There were no “recession-proof” jobs that weren’t already dominated by Boomers or Gen-Xers, who ensured that dominance by writing ridiculous requirements for “entry-level jobs” that said you had to have years of experience in a field before you could get a job in that field.

I still remember being told back in ‘08 that the ideal way to get a job was to go to local businesses and asking to speak to the manager, filling out an application, and then calling them back every day to see if they’d had a chance to look at said application.

Roads here are empty (well, emptier than usual).

Part of it might be aggressiveness and part of it might be asshats taking advantage of emptier-than-normal roads to drive ridiculous speeds recklessly on the roads.

There is some evidence for the latter.

Speeding And Other Reckless Driving Spike During Pandemic (Forbes, April 22):

As stay-at-home orders are observed across the country due to the coronavirus pandemic, fewer people are getting behind the wheel. But less traffic and emptier streets may be encouraging some drivers to disregard speed limits and other traffic safety laws. In Colorado, Indiana, Nebraska and Utah, for example, police recently clocked highway speeds of over 100 mph. And some states have found that while motor vehicle crashes are less frequent, the ones that do occur are more serious.

Those are the highlights of a new analysis released on Thursday by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), a nonprofit organization representing the nation’s state highway safety offices, which reported a severe spike in speeding and other reckless driving behavior.

How fucked are things in WI? The Guardian doesn’t even point out that the WI Supreme Court listened to oral arguments on the governor’s edict about in-person voting via video conference, but that the conservative majority voted against the edict because one of their own was up for reelection. Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta (shorthand: the Knights of Malta) Giacomo Dalla Torre has died at the age of seventy-five after several months illness being treated at the Vatican.

In 2017 Pope Francis demanded the resignation of the previous Grand Master due to the order distributing condoms to prevent disease and unwanted pregnancies in violation of the Catholic Catechism.

The Knights of Malta are a quasi-state, issuing their own stamps, passports, coins, and license plates, has an observer seat in the United Nations, and are recognised as a nation in over one hundred countries as sovereign (not the United States, though a proposal was floated in 1936).

Pope Francis sent his condolences to the order.

There are several Knights of the lowest order in the United States. That level does not require a pedigree of royalty.

Wylie Mayor Defends Religious Belief That Only Men Should Lead Public Prayer (3 hours ago)

The email exchange began Thursday when a Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Forrester asked Mayor Hogue if a local missionary group could “come to our next meeting and lead us in prayer before the meeting.”

Mayor Hogue agrees saying with one stipulation: “…that those leading the public prayer be young men.”

“I am a Church of Christ preacher and I am a member of the Church of Christ and we take the new testament literally,” Mayor Hogue said.

In the email, Mayor Hogue quotes a bible verse that says: “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”

Ga. church closes two weeks after reopening as families come down with coronavirus (Christian Post)

A Georgia church that reopened after shutting down due to the coronavirus has axed in-person services again in what they describe as “an effort of extreme caution” as several of their families have become infected by the deadly disease.

Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle, an independent Baptist church led by Pastor Justin Gazaway in Ringgold, Georgia, restarted in-person services on April 26. Church representative Joan Lewis told The Christian Post on Monday, however, that they decided to suspend “in-person worship services for the foreseeable future” on May 11 after learning several families had contracted the virus.

God: I sent you epidemiologists, physicians, and science communicators, what more did you want?

“Though we feel very confident of the safe environment we are able to offer in our facilities, …

LOL no, said the coronavirus

… the decision was made … that we would discontinue all in-person services again until further notice in an effort of extreme caution for the safety and well-being of our families.”

Translation: We tried filling up the collection plates again and it didn’t work. When we figure out how to do that, we’ll be back.

“Based on the current data that was shared and the low volume of cases in our area at the time, …

There’s you’re problem, you’re listening to Republican Governor Brian Kemp’s manipulated data rather than epidemiologists

… and in an effort to offer our families both options of either attending in-person services or streaming online, we resumed services in the Tabernacle a couple of weeks ago. While approximately a fourth of our congregation chose to attend the in-person services, our other families chose to remain at home and continue enjoying our streaming services,” the church said.

Yup, one-quarter doesn’t fill up the collection plate.

Among 92 attendees at a rural Arkansas church during March 6-11, 35 (38%) developed laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, and three persons died. Highest attack rates were in persons aged 19-64 years (59%) and ≥65 years (50%). An additional 26 cases linked to the church occurred in the community, including one death.

Catholic, Lutheran Leaders Say They Will Defy Gov. Tim Walz’s Order, Reopen May 26 (CBS Minnesota)

We’re plague rats Christians, we don’t have to follow the law.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The heads of Minnesota’s Catholic and Lutheran churches say they will defy Gov. Tim Walz’s executive order and reopen on May 26 — without adhering to the requirement of no more than 10 worshipers at a given service.

The law firm Becket released a statement early Wednesday evening on behalf of the Minnesota Catholic Conference and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Minnesota, citing the perceived hypocrisy of allowing retail stores, casinos, bars and restaurants to have a 50% capacity as a major reason to not follow the governor’s order.

It’s a bit better between Interstate 190 and King’s Highway 403 (the only part of the QEW I’ve ever been on).

One has to remember that “Maximum 100” doesn’t mean miles per hour. (The speedometer on my Smart only has a miles scale. The OPP would have a dim view of a Smart flying at 160 km/h on the QEW.)

At least the rest-seeking douchecanoe who owns the Ambassador Bridge lost his ballot fight/lawsuits to prevent Ontario from building the Gordie Howe Bridge.

The Koch Brothers were also involved in that fight (through their PAC Americans for Prosperity). They peppered the Michigan side with eviction notices in the neighbourhood where the Michigan land was being acquired from owners and Detroit.

When AFP was called out on their lie, they claimed it was only adverts to get area residents to call state legislators to vote against permitting the bridge.

Fun fact about the Ambassador Bridge: They have a duty-free gas station, which does not have to pay excise taxes on gasoline in Michigan. That said, the amount you save at that station is only a few cents lower than the regular price, meaning the asshat who owns the bridge pockets what would be the excise tax as rent-seeking profit.

There’s been a SARS-CoV-2 outbreak at a coal mine in Karviná, Czech Republic.

Translated from Czech:

This weekend, at the Darkov Mine in the Karviná region, a mass coronavirus infection broke out and further testing is being planned for about 1,000 people. All mine employees who have not yet been tested will be checked. This was stated by Pavla Svrčinová, director of the Regional Hygiene Station in Ostrava. More than one hundred workers from the Darkov Mine and their families fell ill with COVID-19.

This will serve as a good test of the Czech government’s ability to stamp out “brushfire” outbreaks on a localized basis rather than having to go whole-hog with a national lockdown.

Earlier this month, Gov. Cuomo included drive-in movie theaters on a list of low-risk business and recreational activities that can reopen starting May 15.

For weeks the Malta Drive-In has been consulting with other area drive-in owners and their county health department to put together a reopening plan that will adhere to CDC guidelines and safety regulations.

COVID-19 news out of Texas:

Officials in Grayson County have confirmed the first death related to COVID-19 — a man in his 50s from Denison. Family members say he was a forklift operator at the Tyson Foods plant in Sherman.

Some employees at the plant say there have been nearly 300 workers there who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

It was last week when the Texas Department of Emergency Management tested every worker at the Tyson plant. But employees say while they are waiting to learn if they are positive, the outbreak at the Sherman facility keeps growing.

According to employees, some 1,000 tests have come back negative, but there are between 300-400 tests that are are still pending. Workers whose results are pending are allegedly still going to work, and those who test positive are notified on the job.

Looks like China’s making their move on Hong Kong….not with tanks, but with laws.

China’s ruling Communist Party gave its clearest signal yet that it plans to bring Hong Kong under its full control, with a top official saying Thursday that Beijing wants to “improve” the system that has allowed the territory to enjoy a level of autonomy for the past 23 years.

After steadily eroding Hong Kong’s freedom of assembly and expression, and independent legal system, the party now appears to be readying to change the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution.

“We will ensure the long-term stability of ‘one country, two systems,’” Wang Yang, a top party official and head of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said at the opening of the annual meeting of the country’s top political advisory body. The meeting is the first part of the “Two Sessions,” which will continue Friday with the opening of the National People’s Congress, the rubber-stamp parliament.

I see another summer of protests - followed shortly thereafter by a wave of emigration out of Hong Kong from those who can afford to resettle somewhere friendlier.

A bit more on that here:

Beijing will introduce a draft resolution to allow the National People’s Congress to chart legislation for a new national security law tailor-made for Hong Kong that will proscribe secessionist and subversive activity, foreign interference and terrorism in the city, sources have told the Post. A Beijing source said the new law would ban all seditious activities aimed at toppling the central government and external interference in Hong Kong’s affairs.

“We can no longer allow acts like desecrating national flags or defacing of the national emblem in Hong Kong.”.

“The NPC decision will delegate the NPC Standing Committee to draft the new legislation for Hong Kong, which would be included in Annex 3 of Hong Kong’s Basic Law,” the source said.

Connecticut’s real estate market is taking off from people fleeing NYC.

After a burst of activity in the closing weeks of winter this year, Connecticut agents had braced for a buying lull through the summer months amid continuing uncertainty over the impact of COVID-19. But as the human tragedy has unfolded, the instinct for flight from the city appears to have taken hold.

Mark Pruner, fresh off renting a Westport home at $25,000 a month, noted the owner got five offers in a single day from city dwellers seeking an alternative.

One … called me up and said, ‘do you know of anything else?’” the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services New England Properties agent said. “She lives in a beautiful, 10-story coop on Park Avenue in New York, but every time [she] gets in the elevator … she is afraid.”

When it comes to CA, isn’t usually those years of Democratic control that the wingers like to cite as the “cause” of the Golden State’s supposed economic “disasters”?

I haven’t lived in California in decades, but I recall that the standard Republican line always used to be* that they were the only fiscally “responsible” Party, and that The Dems were a gang of tax-and-spend quasi-socialists who were dedicated to crushing small businesses and taxing Just Plain Folks up the wazoo, so they could give it away on welfare for the “illegals” and Those People….

*though the CA GOP has always, politically, lagged decades behind, may still be true.

Well, this is so breathtakingly dumb I can’t even think of a snide comment.

The Moscow-affiliated Moldovan Orthodox Church has called on the country’s leadership to ensure that a potential future anti-coronavirus vaccine will not be made compulsory, claiming conspiracy by a “world anti-Christ system” that will allegedly insert microchips into humans to control them via 5G technology.

The Church made the accusations in a May 19 religious statement to President Igor Dodon, Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanni, and Prime Minister Ion Chicu.

Europe and the United States have seen a growing wave of protests by conspiracy theorists, extremists, and anti-vaxxers against coronavirus restrictions, many of them promoted via social media.

Theories about the allegedly negative effects of 5G technology have been aggressively pushed on social media during the pandemic by conservative circles in Europe and the United States, aided by Russian media affiliated to the Kremlin.

He’s also my godfather. I have friends and hell with my heart condition I myself might be vulnerable. Point for me is I don’t care how old someone is. Public health matters and we need to do all we can to stop the virus’s spread and help the sick. We shouldn’t sacrifice our loved ones so Trump can have the economy as a talking point.

re: #129 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Good article.

Here’s what I don’t understand:

Killing the old people for the economy isn’t a winning message.

This approach targets his (and all) Republican supporters.

Why target them? Sure they’ll take our done Dems, too, but more GOPers will get sick/die.

How is this a winning strategy?

Honestly? I think it’s a calculation that involves:

1) Still thinking COVID-SARS is just a bad case of the flu, so no biggie

2) Knowing that a good chunk of Republicans are literally willing to die for Trump and the party at this point

3) Not giving a shit what happens to his marks, aka, his supporters.

Trump wants a second term and he will do anything to get it. If people have to die so he wins, he’s cool with that. He and his people know this. Shit, I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime in the future, documents start leaking that say this was part of their strategy.

Number 2 is worrisome for me. I remember reading an article years ago about biological warfare. In it, there was a concern that someone like Al Queda would develop a virus, infect a follower, and then turn them out into the world as the ultimate guided missile.

It’s really hard not to look at Flu Klux Klan proponents this way.

Speed kills. People are able to drive even faster than usual because there were fewer drivers on the road, and that meant that when they came upon slower cars, they’d have to engage in emergency braking/maneuvering with predictable results.

And NYC had 2 pedestrian fatalities yesterday from drivers. First time in 2 months. That was the longest stretch where pedestrians weren’t killed walking across streets since cars first appeared in the City (and records kept).

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s a glorious day out there, even if it’s a little chilly this morning. But I expect there to be crowds out in the parks as people begin to emerge from the forced hibernation to stop covid19 spreading. Not as much social distancing, or masks out in the parks, and that’s going to enable this to spread once more.

We’re playing with fire, and we are going to get burned. No one wants to stay at home indefinitely, but without aggressive testing and far more screening and contact tracing, we’re going to be shut back down before we know it.

So of course the NYT runs a mess of a story claiming that we could have had 36,000 fewer deaths had Cuomo shut things down a week or two sooner than he did.

Um… yeah, except everyone from Trump on down was claiming that it was an overreaction and questioned Cuomo’s New Rochelle order as being fascist/overreaction.

Cuomo did respond slower than Newsom in CA. That’s true. By all of a couple of days.

Trump abdicated his role to protect the nation from all threats, foreign and domestic. He let this spread uncontrolled nationwide. He ignored the briefings and PDBs. GOPers downplayed this to the public, all while they were going to their stock brokers to cash in on the pandemic (Loeffler, Burr, etc.) Cuomo didn’t have the health experts that Trump has at his disposal and made the decision with incomplete information.

Trump had the ability to ramp up testing, use the WHO test and deliver them by the thousands to NY. He didn’t. NY had to scratch build a testing scheme to deal with the crisis that quickly spiraled out of control. Trump continued to believe that cases would soon be zero back in March. We’re now about to cross 100,000 dead Americans and he’s too busy calling for things to reopen to care.

Do those days make a difference? Absolutely. But Trump wasn’t demanding closures. He still doesn’t. He’s chafing at all the closures and wants things opened up even before cases have started declining in states.

Maggie’s doing Trump’s heavy lifting.

And pointing that out means that the Trumpists calling you a China lover come out of the woodwork (and make it easy for you to block).

OK, I read that NYT story about “avoidable” COVID-19 deaths, and while it’s not really that much of a “mess” (though citing figures up til May 3 makes it, by Coronavirus-pandemic standards, near-obsolete) - IMHO, the whole thing is an wasteful exercise in sharp-focus hindsight. Yes, of course, X number of deaths could have been avoided if the country (never mind NYC) had “locked down” on March 1st. And how many casualties would we have if the lockdown had happened on Feb. 15? Or Feb. 1? Sure: a Wuhan-style lockdown with severe travel restrictions and an obsessive testing regimen implemented by mid-February would probably have saved tens of thousands of lives. But that didn’t happen: AND WASN’T GOING TO HAPPEN. And sad as it is, the reality is that you can’t undo the past: all the should-have/could have hindsight “revelations” are good for is influencing (one hopes) future responses. Right now, we still have a semi-uncontrolled pandemic raging (which the still-existing paucity of testing merely aggravates) - we have to deal with the present.

And PS: Maggie Haberman can go fuck herself with the gratuitous Dem-bashing - as I recall, “Cuomo and DeBlasio” were no tardier than anyone else wrt the shutdown: I realize it was in the Ancient Days of two months ago, but by mid-March, the Federal Government was only just moving away from the “It’s all a hoax” line…..

That too, but people don’t realize how much rush hour traffic slows things done. A lot of places don’t have the direct routes that allow for speed, so trucks have to wait in traffic with cars at inconvenient moments. It also helps that a lot of other trucks are being sidelined due to the companies being closed.

Probably a combination of this and less traffic on the road so better travel times.

re: #184 CarolJ

That too, but people don’t realize how much rush hour traffic slows things done. A lot of places don’t have the direct routes that allow for speed, so trucks have to wait in traffic with cars at inconvenient moments. It also helps that a lot of other trucks are being sidelined due to the companies being closed.

I think EC is probably closer than the truth.

I have noticed this as well. My take on it isn’t that they are driving faster though. My theory is that with so many small businesses closed, the number of commercial deliveries have fallen allowing for earlier residential deliveries to made.

Are you a Prime member? Amazon deliveries are definitely slow as snails for me (a non-member). Much much slower.

Yep. Aircraft and vehicles are built to be as light as possible for efficiency while maintaining just enough rigidity in their frames. Ram them into something solid and they’ll simply crumple and wrap themselves around it. (Which you can see from photos of a lot of auto and train accidents.)

And then you see movies where sliding train cars, truck trailers, etc. just slice through things like metal/concrete support beams, bridge abutments, etc. when a simple Jersey barrier would actually cause them quite a bit of harm and slow them appreciably (assuming they don’t flip over it first.)

I have to say this. AS much as I like and respect Hillary Clinton, Trump did benefit from decades of hostility towards her. Biden doesn’t have that. Another difference too is Clinton ran against candidate Trump and Biden is running against incumbent Trump. We know what Trump’s Presidency is like now and Clinton had it right but it’s always easier to argue based off of what can happen versus what has happened. I’ve always felt that Trump would be an uniquely disadvantaged incumbent even with a better economy.

A new Oxford Economics model predicts the coronavirus pandemic will cause President Trump to suffer a “historic defeat” in November, CNN reports.

“The model, which uses unemployment, disposable income and inflation to forecast election results, predicts that Trump will lose in a landslide, capturing just 35% of the popular vote. That’s a sharp reversal from the model’s pre-crisis prediction that Trump would win about 55% of the vote. And it would be the worst performance for an incumbent in a century.”

Said the report: “It would take nothing short of an economic miracle for pocketbooks to favor Trump, adding that the economy will be a “nearly insurmountable obstacle for Trump come November.”

And the Chaos Agent strikes again: Trump to pull out of the Open Skies surveillance treaty

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration notified international partners on Thursday that it is pulling out of a treaty that permits 30-plus nations to conduct unarmed, observation flights over each other’s territory — overflights set up decades ago to promote trust and avert conflict.

The administration says it wants out of the Open Skies Treaty because Russia is violating the pact, and imagery collected during the flights can be obtained quickly at less cost from U.S. or commercial satellites. Exiting the treaty, however, is expected to strain relations with Moscow and upset European allies and some members of Congress.

We as Democrats are used to generational candidates. Obama and Bill Clinton were that and I’d argue that JFK and Carter benefited from that too. But in uncertain times, a seasoned pro like Biden might be the best answer especially since he seems happy and eager to share the stage. Plus I think he’s going to be an executive that values the legislature as a co-equal partner of the executive branch.

I view Biden the same way as I viewed Jerry Brown when he came back as Governor. Jerry had to fix the damage Asshole Ah-Nold did and steady the ship.

The models in 2016 were overall fairly accurate. But the national average doesn’t get you elected president. It’s what the individual states show that matters. And, from what I’ve seen, that’s got Biden winning by a big margin as well.

More than half of twitter accounts spewing nonsense about reopening are actually bots.

To analyze bot activity around the pandemic, CMU researchers since January have collected more than 200 million tweets discussing coronavirus or COVID-19. Of the top 50 influential retweeters, 82% are bots, they found. Of the top 1,000 retweeters, 62% are bots.

The monitoring of tweets is ongoing and collections from Facebook, Reddit and YouTube have been added to the research.

“We’re seeing up to two times as much bot activity as we’d predicted based on previous natural disasters, crises and elections,” said Kathleen Carley, a professor in the School of Computer Science’s Institute for Software Research and director of the Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS) and Center for Informed Democracy & Social - Cybersecurity (IDeaS.)

Carley said multiple factors contribute to the surge. First, more individuals have time on their hands to create do-it-yourself bots. But the number of sophisticated groups that hire firms to run bot accounts also has increased. The nature of the pandemic matters, too. “Because it’s global, it’s being used by various countries and interest groups as an opportunity to meet political agendas,” she said.

Surprising absolutely no one.

That and with the exception of Taft, Andrew Johnson, and John Quincy Adams, retired Presidents don’t have second acts in politics. I do think Biden will have Obama as an informal adviser. One thing that separates Trump and it’s part of why he’s so awful is that he doesn’t lean on advice from his predecessors. Even when Hoover was still blamed for the Depression, Truman still talked to him. Obama is more popular than Hoover was in the late 40’s and early 50’s and Biden will talk to him. I think Biden should go with someone like Rice or Burns. But I’m not Biden. I just go based on who I see he has as his surrogates, people who are respected within their field, and people who I think are credible which is why I named Ambassador Yovanovich as someone I would like to see have a prominent role in the State Department.

There are thousands of privately owned dams nationwide.

One of the worst disasters in US history was due to the private dam owned by a sporting/hunting club failing after rainstorms.

Johnstown PA. Might have heard of it? It killed more than 2,000 people when the South Fork dam failed.

It was a privately owned and maintained dam. Except that it wasn’t properly maintained and it was enlarged without adequate steps taken to deal with heavy rains and how to protect the structure from being overtopped.

UPDATE:
More than half of all dams in the US are privately owned.

A career State Department person over a partisan hack like Pompeo will do wonders for the State Department morale. Tillerson and especially Pompeo have infuriated the DoS rank and file through their arrogance adn asshole behavior.

Not to mention the positive effect a respectful and professional SoS will have on our actual foreign relations: like, y’know, with other countries of the world….

Though the Trumpian approach to relationships with other nations (i.e. arrogant xenophobia mixed with self-righteous victimization, liberally salted with racism) is unfortunately, a political winner in a lot of places.

When Biden wins Q will get even wackier. (Seems impossible for Q to get stranger, but they will find a way). The good news is that in the long run Q hurts the republican party.

Q lives in some kind of alternate Groundhog Day where every day is “they’ll be arrested next week” day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year.

Yabbut, how many International Border Crossings (the Ambassador Bridge is the busiest border crossing in North America) are privately owned?

I avoid going across the Ambassador Bridge. The Duty Free store is a joke. Fragrance is only a few cents cheaper than Macy’s. We drive up to Port Huron and go over the Blue Water Bridge, and on the way back we take the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel.

A short rant on this idea of Pence pardoning a just resigned Trump.

Putting aside whether it’s legal because, sigh, it probably is, unless there’s actual obstruction of justice going on….

Nixon was fully investigated. He was about to be impeached, and get convicted.
So he resigned (with encouragement).
Then Ford pardoned him.
Nixon and Ford did not ‘negotiate’ it in advance.
In fact Nixon was reluctant to accept it, then did agree to.

Trump, on the other hand, was impeached and not convicted.

He hasn’t been investigated for anything else. Because the Senate won’t. Certainly Barr and the DOJ won’t. And the entire admin won’t honor any subpoena from the House.

Forget whatever is in the news; it doesn’t count.

There is nothing identified or pending. No one’s looking at him for anything federal. There is no investigation of anything.

So what could Trump et al possibly think he needs to be ‘protected’ from with a preemptive pardon?

You don’t just pardon ‘just in case’ of some mythical future ‘witch hunt’.
(OK, maybe they do.)

He/they have to think he did something wrong that needs pardoning. (Yeah, like just one thing.)

The last time I was on the Ambassador Bridge they had metal plates down on the flat of the bridge because you could see through to what was beneath it… The ground and the water. The center was noon existent in many places. It was really scary and I wouldn’t go over that again for anything.

I really would love to know who Biden has been considering for his Secretary of State. We’re going to need a good one. My early bet is Susan Rice. Biden has praised her and she’s been vetted for VP too. I think she would be qualified and capable for VP but I think Rice is better suited for a position for SoS since she’s really not a politician.

I remember how Fox News tore into Rice during the 2016 campaign…

Isn’t accepting a pardon officially admitting you’d done something illegal that requires said pardon? Not to mention that if pardoned Trump would immediately get subpoenas to testify in all sort of investigations, where he couldn’t take the 5th to prevent self-incrimination since he’d been pardoned for it. And then he’d almost immediately perjury himself on the stand - and the pardon wouldn’t cover that.

Just got back from the grocery store. Only about half of the customers were wearing masks. The Pepsi delivery guys were stocking the aisle and not wearing masks. The lady behind me in line was wearing a mask but came up close to me as I was grabbing my bags and her stuff was getting wrung up. I wish they had a mandatory mask policy, but I think many people in my neighborhood (working class democrats but stubborn) would balk at it.

Correct and I think pardoning Trump would be even more controversial than Nixon. Plus there’s definitely some state investigations that Barr nor the o pardon pen can’t help. I think this might be why he changed his address from NY to Florida.

Gilded Age when less government was better government. (If you were one of the ones with money.)

My father’s family is from that area and I spent a bunch of time around Johnstown in my youth including visiting the dam site more than once.

It’s definitely related to future litigation. James has more than continued Eric Schneiderman’s work in the New York AG’s office. I would hope she’s got a political future beyond that.

But it’s what I’ve pointed out before. Trump’s belief in Peale’s “power of positive thinking” is really apparent during this crisis. Trump sincerely believes that if he thinks positively that COVID-19 will simply go away, and that if he thinks that sincerely enough, then yeah….COVID-19 will vanish. It’s straight-up magical thinking.

Real braintrust, there: never stopped to think for a second that COVID-19 patients who are IN A FUCKING HOSPITAL are there because they are positively sick - and probably on ventilators/in comas?

(I don’t know how Michigan handles it, but here in NY, suspected Coronavirus patients who are “quarantined” are expected to isolate themselves at home, this saving hospital beds for actual disease cases)

Though I read “Michigan Militia”, so likely no “thinking” involved….
