The White House is doing everything it can to push a rapid reopening of the country, including recruiting pro-Trump doctors to go on television and undermine the already softened guidelines released by the CDC. #Colbert #StephenAtHome #Monologue

re: #270 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Q lives in some kind of alternate Groundhog Day where every day is “they’ll be arrested next week” day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year.

Oh, it’s worse than that. In the Qniverse, Hillary, Obama, Mueller, etc., have already been arrested. And executed.

And the people we’re seeing on TV and whatnot are simply body doubles, in order to prevent widespread civil unrest.

But it’s what I’ve pointed out before. Trump’s belief in Peale’s “power of positive thinking” is really apparent during this crisis. Trump sincerely believes that if he thinks positively that COVID-19 will simply go away, and that if he thinks that sincerely enough, then yeah….COVID-19 will vanish. It’s straight-up magical thinking.

Real braintrust, there: never stopped to think for a second that COVID-19 patients who are IN A FUCKING HOSPITAL are there because they are positively sick - and probably on ventilators/in comas?

(I don’t know how Michigan handles it, but here in NY, suspected Coronavirus patients who are “quarantined” are expected to isolate themselves at home, this saving hospital beds for actual disease cases)

Though I read “Michigan Militia”, so likely not much “thinking” involved….

Yep. My diocese (Eau Claire, Episcopal Church) will not open till at least June 14 and then there will be:
No Crypt Café (our local name for coffee/snacks afterwards)
6 ft. physical distancing
Masks required and will be provided, if needed
Eucharist - Wafers only
No singing
Music played?
Verbal or visual Peace

They will decide Saturday June 13 if we will reopen or not. There is a MD/Epidemiologist on the Bishop’s task force so I expect their decisions to be rooted in a decent level of science.

LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)  May 21, 2020 • 10:40:02am

I think even though I’m not religious, it shows the true hollowness of how Trump is when it comes to religion. Anyone who’s ever been to church, temple, a mosque, or any sort of place of worship understands that while congregations are important to their philosophy of worship that individual faith matters too. The local priest here wasn’t exactly damning my grandmother to Hell when she stopped being able to attend weekly Mass. Trump like he did with Easter is trying to frame the issue of public safety as being an attack on freedom of religion and nothing could be more ridiculous.

Republicans are acting very concerned about the damage to the economy caused by the stay-at-home orders, but what they’re really concerned about are the many, many right wing grifts that are missing out on all those rube dollars.

And funneling those grifted dollars to the GOP via campaign contributions.

Hospitals in Montgomery and Prattville have a total of one ICU bed remaining and are now being forced to send acute care patients to Birmingham for treatment.

And what happens when Birmingham’s ICU beds fill up….where do they go then? Will they have to start sending ICU patients to neighboring states? Are there plans in Alabama to build temporary ICU wards?

I was talking with my husband about this. Hell, McVeigh looks like a sane person next to these fucking people. They will do something, it’s just a matter of time. Authorities have caught more than a few of these traitors before they could do damage, but at some point, the hollowing out of various agencies is going to make finding these people harder and increasing the odds. I am truly scared for the country for the first time in 60 years. I know we’ve made it through tons of challenges since our founding, but I feel like we’ve really never been divided over such obviously stupid shit (like masks and a living wage or decent healthcare for all) that may never be healed.

I recall the RWNJ’s up in the Pacific Northwest sorta quieted down after the OKC bombing. Prior to that, they were really going off the rails - I’d see them at gun shows and they had tons of conspiratorial literature and VHS tapes for sale, and various T-Shirts about “killing commies for mommy” and that sort of crap.

After OKC, they certainly piped down.

That is such a garbage meme clearly done up by people are not familiar with the Franchise.

There have been five JP Movies but in fact, not ONCE has the park RE-opened. Progression goes like this:

Jurassic Park (1993) - Park still under construction. Not yet open to General Public. Corporate guys cut corners, make stupid decisions. Dinos get loose and kill people.

The Lost World (1997) - Corporate guys raid another island with dinosaurs on it to try and bring them to the mainland to open a Jurassic Park in San Diego. Effort fails, corporate guys get killed / San Diego gets terrorized by T-Rex / Park never opens.

Jurassic Park III (2001) - Two characters from the first movie travel to the island from the second movie on a rescue mission. No corporate guys or actual park involved.

Jurassic World (2016) - Park OPEN. Corporate guys create new hybrid Dinosaur. Dinosaur escapes and terrorizes the park. Corporate guys make more boneheaded decisions to try and salvage the situation and most get killed for their troubles. Park does NOT reopen.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) - Island from the previous movie (and the first JP movie) and the now closed Park on it get completly destroyed by a volcanic eruption. Corporate guys manage to steal dinos off the island before the volcano goes boom and try to sell them on the black market for big bucks. Doesn’t go well. Most of the corporate guys die and Dinos get loose all over the continent.

Two main takeaways:
1. There was NEVER a park in the franchise that “reopened”

2. The corporate guys are always the ones who make the bad decisions and usually get their asses handed to them by the dinos in the end.

Outdoor dining in Minnesota OK’d for June 1

Bars and restaurants in Minnesota can open June 1 for outdoor service under a revised COVID-19 response strategy announced by Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday that also allows for limited reopening of hair salons and campgrounds.

While COVID-19 remains a growing concern — causing 777 deaths and 17,670 lab-confirmed infections so far in Minnesota — Walz said beloved summertime activities can take place amid the pandemic, with precautions.

Outdoor patios and serving areas will be limited to 50 patrons at a time who are encouraged to wear masks and must make reservations — which among other things will make it easier for state investigators to identify their close contacts if they end up infected later on. Employees must wear masks.

Similarly, salons will only be allowed to operate at 25% capacity, and stylists and customers will need to don masks.

Almost everyone, pro and con, has concerns about the reopening. I was kind of horrified that restaurants can have as many as 50 people seated outside. Some churches are really pissed that restaurants can have 50 but they can only have 10.

Meanwhile, we just had a new daily high of 32 deaths after having a new daily high of 29 a few days ago. I’m afraid that we’re on the cusp of things going really bad. I’m going to be doing curbside or drive-thru until further notice. No way will I sit down at a restaurant.

My congregation is already looking ahead to High Holy Days and having contingency plans to broadcast the services over zoom. We have to do so because there’s a good chance that we’ll be back in a lockdown situation in the fall, and do not want to endanger our members.

The episcopal church I pass on some of my walks went to online services before the statewide shutdown (which was the earliest in the country, I believe), and shows no signs of reopening any time soon.

There’s no safe distance for the wait staff who have to bus these tables. Doesn’t matter that it’s outdoors or not. I will not go to a restaurant under these circumstances.

I am doing curbside service with restaurants in our area. It’ll be a long time before we go to restaurants because it’s impossible to protect ourselves or the staff while eating a meal.

Tuxedo Cat got out while I was bringing groceries in. She wandered a bit, met one of the distant neighbors, and then went and laid down under a pine tree where I couldn’t reach her. And then she wandered over by the brush along the road… and got ambushed by one of the neighbor’s calicos. So there was some chasing back and forth and a lot of hissing. And then Tuxedo Cat opted to run back into the apartment.

You could not pay me or offer me free meals for life to get be to sit down and eat in any restaurant. People have already shown that they won’t do the right thing. All it takes is one asshole or overworked employee to forget a step in the safety rules and that’s it. No thanks.

I’m in California, where we seem to have squelched the assholes — I don’t doubt that we have them. So I’ll consider the new outdoor seating restaurants if they happen.

I wanted to do direct deposit, but to get it I had to enter numbers from my 2018 return since my 2019 return had not been processed. And there were reasons to prefer to use the 2019 return for the numbers. So I skipped it for the time being.

Yes. Sit-down dining only (maybe) works if everybody is following the rules perfectly. As soon as two tables decided to get together or people start showing up without reservations and hang out until they can be seated, it’s going to be hard to get back into ‘acceptable risk’ territory.

My paper check from the Treasury with “economic impact payment” arrived today.

The Don’s signature is not on it. The memo area has the following two printed lines:

Just the check in the envelope. I guess the letter will arrive separately.

I think the letter only goes to wireless transfer recipients.

The Ghost of a Flea  May 21, 2020 • 12:35:41pm

If I look across a lifetime of characterizations, personal and public, across cultures, I’m pretty confident that a great deal of “masculinity” amounts to men estimating that other men have sufficient power to do what they want.

And that’s it; there are cultural values that are characterized as masculine, but often they are ascribed to individuals with power rather used as the test of their masculinity…because power always justifies itself by assigning itself culturally-available positive qualities.

I mean, my most consistent exposure to the concept is that “manliness” has to do with getting women…base-rate accumulation, no judgement about how they do it or with what outcomes. Second to that would be that “manly” guys are able to demand things from others and get them…again, no real judgement of how this is achieved. A lot of times, there’s not even a question of whether manliness and success actually have a cause-effect relationship…the subjective evaluation of masculinity actually follows an evaluation of success, not the other way around.

Like always, it’s not that there’s an actual belief with criterion that they’ve checked off…it’s the opposite: they have a desired endpoint with no justifications, and therefore have to put together a wild, over-blown performance of how True their assumption is. They want their outcome—doing what they want, specifically things that ignore the worth and dignity of other people—but they also want to be described as virtuous.

Given a choice between consistent meaning and feeding their wants, these people choose the destruction of all consistent meaning. Precisely the same way they have altered the Bible , the Constitution, and the death toll in Puerto Rico.

So of course the pig people are trying to attach masculinity tropes to Trump: he’s performing their desired behaviors…being a pushy, domineering assholes that refuses all equal-footing social interactions; violating social norms to get his way; sexual harassment and assault…so he will be ascribed culturally-available positive traits.

Any word they use has been gutted of meaning and filled with the only thing they find meaningful: a belief in a right to abuse power.

Here, read an analysis of restaurant eating - The Risks - Know Them - Avoid Them

The link has the picture of the sitting arrangement and lots more info.

Restaurants: Some really great shoe-leather epidemiology demonstrated clearly the effect of a single asymptomatic carrier in a restaurant environment (see below). The infected person (A1) sat at a table and had dinner with 9 friends. Dinner took about 1 to 1.5 hours. During this meal, the asymptomatic carrier released low-levels of virus into the air from their breathing. Airflow (from the restaurant’s various airflow vents) was from right to left. Approximately 50% of the people at the infected person’s table became sick over the next 7 days. 75% of the people on the adjacent downwind table became infected. And even 2 of the 7 people on the upwind table were infected (believed to happen by turbulent airflow). No one at tables E or F became infected, they were out of the main airflow from the air conditioner on the right to the exhaust fan on the left of the room. (Ref)

I love to drive and do road trips and grew up in NYC metro. I can deal with NYC metro area traffic, but LA? Fuck to the no. Nope. Hated dealing with it. Flew into LAX for a trip to Palm Springs once. Should have been 2 hours and change to drive from the airport to Palm Springs. It took nearly 5.

Our return trip? After seeing how awful the trip to PS was, I budgeted 4+ hours to get back. We needed almost every minute of it.

There’s no reason to have 6 fucking lanes of traffic. It induces even more traffic. LA doesn’t have more people living in the city than NYC does, but it just feels like more of them are fine sitting in traffic going nowhere fast.

re: #234 PhillyPretzel

Judge DeMuro cast a total of about 100 ballots across 3 elections.

In May 2014, DeMuro inflated vote totals by adding 27 fraudulent ballots in the primary election, 40 votes in May 2015, and 46 in 2016, according to court documents outlining the scheme and the charges against him.

While those numbers may seem small, prosecutors said, they made up a significant percentage of the total votes cast at the polling place. In 2014, 118 total ballots were reported there, which means that DeMuro’s fraudulent votes accounted for over 22% of the total voting in that division in 2014. In 2015, his fraud accounted for over 15% of the votes in the division; in 2016, his fraud accounted for over 17% of the votes.

DeMuro faces up to 15 years in federal prison when sentenced.

This is why voter fraud is not nearly the threat voter suppression is.

It’s a lot of work for someone to cast that many ballots. It’s far easier to deny 100s of thousands of people their right to vote, or to stuff ballot boxes with election fraud measures like adding to counts or manipulating the numbers after the votes are cast. This one example will now give Trump all the evidence he needs to prove that voter fraud is real and widespread (it isn’t).

I think what Joe is doing is simply exercising due diligence regarding his choice… I would expect him to do the same for quite a few potential candidates and for those people that were ardent supports of his opponents for the nomination it sends a signal that he’s not taking their support of him lightly.

So I’m not going to get in a twist about it or worry about who he selects until said selection is made. Pretty good chance that no matter who he selects, they will still be an exponentially better person than the current VP, Pence.

BREAKING: Michigan Court of Claims rules in favor of Whitmer’s Stay-at-home order:

Up until April 30, the state of emergency declaration issued by Whitmer had the approval of the GOP-controlled Legislature. On April 30, the Legislature did not extend the order.

On May 15, the Michigan Court of Claims heard arguments in the case.

Judge Stephens said while the Governor re-declaring the same emergency violated the provisions of the Emergency Management Act, the plaintiffs challenges to the Executive Power of the Governor Act and the Governor’s authority to issue the executive orders are meritless.

Expect a Michigan Supreme Court plea by the GOP.

I don’t know. The article doesn’t say.

“DeMuro fraudulently stuffed the ballot box by literally standing in a voting booth and voting over and over, as fast as he could, while he thought the coast was clear. This is utterly reprehensible conduct. The charges announced today do not erase what he did, but they do ensure that he is held to account for those actions,” McSwain added.

He did not name the candidates and did not say if they won their elections.

DeMuro admitted that a political consultant — whose name prosecutors did not reveal — paid him to add votes for Democratic candidates running for the bench, prosecutors said.

Starting next week, people in Minneapolis will need to wear masks or cloth face coverings when going to businesses or other buildings where people gather.

Mayor Jacob Frey signed an order Thursday that will require people over the age of 2 to wear a covering over their nose and mouth when they are inside “indoor spaces of public accommodation.”

The order includes in that definition retail stores, government buildings, schools and recreation centers and “rental establishments” such as hotels, among other facilities. Frey said it would also apply in the skyways.

The other people on the election board either were told to ignore him and what he was doing inside the booth or there was no election board.

Usually the election board isn’t present at the polling locations, certainly not all of them. In person, day-of voting is handled by poll workers, usually with officers responsible for conveying the precinct tallies to the county board on election night, and many states will have monitors from both parties at the precinct as well.

Usually frauds like this are committed in smaller local elections, where tens of votes can actually determine the result. When I worked at the State Board in NC, which is still partly dry, liquor by the drink referendums at the municipal level were the target of shenanigans both pro and con.

I keep oin going back to this but Trump has a higher floor of support than most politicians do but he also has a lower ceiling of support too. It’s why he consistently even when the economy was good, he never got over 50%. His actions on Covid are hurting him big time here. We’ve got a long way to November but I’m bullish on not only beating him but beating him big. First thing I’m doing when I complete my class work in a few weeks is looking for opportunities on the Biden campaign. GOP leaders rebuke Republican House candidate over insulting social media posts

The NRCC removed Ted Howze, the party’s nominee in a California battleground district, from its “Young Guns” program for touted recruits.

TL;DR: His social media posts were too racist and bigoted. Mr. Howze claims someone else had access to his social media accounts (that old conservative chestnut).

Kevin McCarthy endorsed him in March. He says now racism and bigotry have no place in the Republican Party (LOL, since when? Not in my lifetime).

The real issue is he got caught.

He is running for the seat Josh Harder won in CA-10.

re: #232 lawhawk

We also do not have nearly the transit options that NYC does. Extra lanes do not induce more traffic when drivers have no option but driving to get where they are going. Way to many people here live in spots where they cannot get many of their errands done on foot, and although that has been improving in many neighborhoods, many lower income neighborhoods have not seen it as much as more expensive ones. We just don’t have the population density of Manhattan. As LA grew, it grew outwards rather than upwards. Some of my co-workers live 3 or even 4 light-years away from work, because they have kids and wanted to be able to buy a house.
Nobody I know is “fine” with sitting in traffic. Most people put up with it because they don’t have a whole lot of choice. I am hoping the expansion of the rail system will help some, although are plenty of fancyKarens who think it too declasse for them and are hoping enough of the hoi polloi will get on the trains and make more space for their huge SUV’s. (“IT’S NOT IMAGE, I HAVE TO HAVE A 12 TON SUV TO KEEP MY BABIES SAFE!”)

How Parasitic Capitalism Is Making the Elkhorn Nursing Home Outbreak Worse (Seeing Red Nebraska)

Preston Forrest is the 87-year-old fundamentalist multi-billionaire who founded Life Care Centers of America, the largest private nursing home chain in the United States. Life Care runs the nursing home in Elkhorn, where two out of three residents have tested positive for coronavirus and five people have died. It also runs Life Care Center in Kirkland, Washington, one of the nation’s first COVID hot spots, where 35 people have died.

In what remotely healthy society does a person become a multi-billionaire running facilities that care for the elderly?

Judge DeMuro cast a total of about 100 ballots across 3 elections.

Since it was ballot boxes that were stuffed, maybe we should all go to mail-in voting to prevent that.

Good.

Polling indicates NE-2 is a battleground district. Targeting the district might also help the Democratic candidate Kara Eastman flip the seat from Don Bacon (R). Additionally, there is a Libertarian Party candidate on the ballot Tyler Schaffer who could conceivably strip votes from Rep. Bacon. Bacon flipped the seat from the Democratic incumbent Brad Ashford in the 2016 election.

Don’t forget using “the” in front of freeway numbers. E.g. you are not driving east on route 10, you are driving east on the 10.

Took me a while to get used to, since back home I would drive north on route 91 to get to Northampton. But now it takes effort to not say “the 91.”

Putting “the” before a freeway number is a southern CA thing. It is starting to creep into northern CA, but is generally frowned on. In NorCal we used to have “the Nimitz freeway” but it’s “880” now. If I recall correctly, “Bayshore Freeway” (now “101”) was often referred to without an article preceding it.

My church just released its public statement on reopening plans. The highlights:

* Small groups will be allowed to meet in person as soon as they are able, within the Governor’s orders.
* Launching small “village churches” led by families to host group watch parties for the online service experience. These will stay in accordance with Governor Walz’s safety orders as well; starting with 10 people and growing to 50 as restrictions are relaxed.
* Our secondary campus will reopen when we are allowed to have 100 people gather. We have three large rooms that will have separate entrance and exit paths cordoned off, and use them to provide simultaneous live worship and video sermon experiences; no secondary ministries or coffee service. We will add a service for elderly/vulnerable people at which masks will be required.
* Our primary campus will reopen when restrictions allow 250 people to gather. We will also add limited secondary ministries such as kids and simple coffee.
* Full reopening will only happen once no restrictions are in place.
* There is no obligation or expectation that people will return quickly, or even at all.
* No timelines have been set for any of these plans. The church leadership does not believe it prudent to defy the Governor’s orders, nor are they viewing this as an attack on the Church as a whole.

Umm, for better or for worse, the guy is the president of the United States. It has perks that allow him to go speak in places. It’s probably a potentially risky maneuver to turn down a president (generically speaking).

Nobody at Ford or the auto workers unions approved of his stupid script, and banning him from the premises or shouting him down would have created really negative local consequences for everyone. They just had to listen, probably in horrified amazement at the crap coming out of his mouth.

Maybe in hindsight, Ford management could have found some reason to not hold the event (like the mask company in PA), but once it was scheduled, it’s kind of hard to say “Sorry, but you’re too fucked up to come here”.

In a just world, these kind of fake rallies will become harder to schedule because who wants to look like a dupe for this self-aggrandizing asshole. My $.02.

They had a nationwide radio show to go after “Hollywood communists” and jazz music. They moved to Glendale, Calif. in 1953 and finally disbanded in 1977.

I remember the two run-ins I had with sick sick Bobby Fischer when he was pushing Ford’s book. Someone I idolized as a kid and I found out what a freak he was…

And now here’s another asshole Ayn Randian who calls for “herd immunity”

One of the most remarkable dimensions of the COVID19 Crisis is the way the most garish or clownish versions of class division and privilege are pushed so aggressively to the fore. As we’ve discussed earlier, billionaires are eager to get back to work or rather eager to get you back to work. No less remarkable, they’re eager to talk to reporters or go on TV and make their argument. Now we have hedge fund chief Ricky Sandler, CEO of Eminence Capital, who has announced that America needs to get behind herd immunity. On a CNBC appearance yesterday he lamented “how the politicians and the media and the academic community and the scientific community have taken hold of this debate,” and announced it’s time to push on to herd immunity.

I will shed no tears when this rich fart is hooked to a respirator!

If we see red state America remain open for business as usual while blue state America opens things up in a more reality-based way, the resulting differences in covid19 case rates might actually penetrate the solid bone damn near half the country has in its heads.

If my local restaurant opened up their outdoor patio I would go tonight. Most evidence now shows the risk of outdoor spread is much lower than indoors and the CDC just realeased guidance today that the virus does not spread easily through touching surfaces

So while the risk isn’t zero I think it is a risk I can accept.

I saw tables out at the diner I frequented before March. Should see if they’re “open” so to speak - or at least if I have the option to get a sandwich “to go” and then sit and eat it there. (Don’t have a good way to sit outside and eat at home.)

I bought some masks about a month ago but I’m thinking that they’re a bit too small for my head (I wear an XXXL motorcycle helmet) and kind of whimpy. Does anyone have any recommendations for a guy with a fat head and a beard (that’s going to get trimmed later today)? How much should I expect to pay for a decent mask? I’m looking on Amazon and it seems to be around $20 min for what I need, but it’s hard to judge quality.

I am naturally partial to ours, the elastic bands give them a lot of fit flexibility, but sadly I can’t 100% guarantee for a triple-X melon.

I did not know that! Since moving out here, I have only lived in the Los Angeles area.
