and yes those are the buds for the flowers of the saguaro cactus, they show up for about 7-10 days, flowers last a couple of days and then the buds fall off. It’s a simple, yet pretty white flower, quite popular with bees. I’ll see if I can get one that has most of the blooms open at the same time and share it here.

If she’s such a devout Xtian why is she violating 1 Timothy 2:12 which says “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence”.

At this point, I can’t understand how anyone can believe going forward that she has a single shred of credibility for any reason other than sheer hatred of Joe Biden.

Because she’s a hypocrite. It’s perfectly fine for her to write books (she says she’d never read a book by a woman), or teach the Bible (especially the hateful parts about marital rape which she supports), but not for others.

In her world, a single mother like mine doesn’t exist (whether through never marrying, death of the husband, or divorce which she thinks should be illegal). Women are simply interchangeable cogs to amplify men in the sight of God (and “woman” means “menarche” because like many fundamentalists and libertarians, she doesn’t believe the state should regulate the age of girls to be married off to men).

She’s also a fan of the Pearl’s “To Train Up a Child.”

For all those in the squishy middle who only make up their minds in the last few days before an election and don’t pay any attention to politics otherwise, it will matter.

Tara Reade’s story is inside baseball for political rodent copulation and political junkies now. In the days before the election, when the GOP, Russian trolls, and Bern Outs trot out this stale chestnut, it will provide a) see they’re both the same, b) chaos from Russia, and c) this is why Bernie needs to be the nominee.

It will work on a surprising number of people who never pay attention to politics except for a few days every four years.

2:43 AM EDT: No half-staff proclamation from the White House yet.

Personally, I don’t expect Trump to issue one. His statement was a one-off to get off that subject from a question.

Moreover, the letter from Sen. Schumer and Rep. Pelosi asking for a half-staff notification when deaths reach 100,000 to mark that grim milestone is going to chap Trump’s very ample ass. He’s not going to want to cave to anything Schumer and Pelosi request. Such a proclamation would unleash a deluge of complaints from Team Moronica, and from the left pointing out the abject failure of the maladministration.

Wonkette has re-opened the Reader Help Slush Fund at GoFundMe because of so many people who are unemployed and are not receiving help.

The fund had an initial goal of $20,000 and so far has raised $73,211. At the time they paused it, the fund had distributed over $57,000 to pretty much anyone who said they needed help (the fund was upside-down for a time so Rebecca Shoenkopf made up the difference).

How is it that it’s just shy of two months later, and people still haven’t gotten their unemployment checks? Oh, right, Rick Scott wanted to fuck the jobless. How is it that the Paycheck Protection Program turned out SO badly for everyone but Trump donors and me? Oh right, Steven Mnuchin is a useless douche. How is it that red states — including, despite its Democratic governor, Montana, where I live and where Commie Girl Industries is incorporated, LARRY KLAYMAN — are encouraging businesses to fink on any employee who doesn’t want to go back to serving coronavirus stew oftentimes before they’ve even been able to file? I appreciate you letting me know about your nifty new website for ratting on my workers, Montana Department of Labor, but my husband and I are our only employees in the state, and we have neither laid us off nor refused to return to work. Yet.

They want to cut the UI enhancement while at the same time granting businesses immunity from any liability lawsuits from employees who contract CV-19 after the country “reopens.”

It’s an admission on their part that not only do they recognize that most people given the choice between staying home and going back to work in the era of CV-19 will choose the former, but that most businesses will not take the chance of reopening if it means getting hit by a barrage of worker liability lawsuits because their approach to sick workers is “Suck it up or I’ll find somebody else!”

“People die of poverty” is the counter-argument.

People die of improper nutrition, shelter and medical care. Those are related issues but nobody has to die of “poverty” in this nation. Only moral poverty on the part of the people who are entrusted to look after the public good.

No wonder Lil’ Donny has been so grumpy lately. His diaper probably needs changing, especially if he got wind of this:

A new Fox News poll finds former Vice President Joe Biden leading President Trump by 8 points nationally, with the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee opening up wide leads among independents and older voters who broke for Trump in 2016.

The survey released Thursday finds Biden at 48 percent support and Trump at 40 percent, with 11 percent undecided or saying they’ll support someone else. Trump and Biden were knotted at 42 percent in the same survey last month.

Biden leads by 17 points among voters aged 65 and older and by 13 points among independents.

Exit polls found older voters going for Trump by 7 points in 2016. Trump also won independents by 4 points.

Some Democrats have worried about polling that shows Biden facing an enthusiasm gap, but the Fox news survey found that Biden leads 53 percent to 41 among voters who say they’re extremely motivated to vote in November

Without the geriatric set and the indies, Trump’s probably gonna get clobbered. The only demographics where he’s likely significantly leading Biden are white men without a college degree and Christian fundies.

This should really be dubbed the “Black Swan Election,” because it’s pretty obvious that nothing that’s happening was on anybody’s minds when gaming out how this was going to go last year. A year ago, the “very serious people” had Donny at even odds or better of winning reelection if the economy held up til November. On the list of events that would totally swing the odds of the election, I doubt “novel viral pandemic” was even in the top ten.

again, a President with any sense of vision or leadership could have rallied the populace around him in times of crisis, even with the economy suffering, if he provided a sense of resolve and competence.

But Donny freaked out the economy not only for the sake of his re-election chances, but also due to the damage it will do to his businesses…there is only so long that he can shuffle the numbers and set up shell companies and third-party straw men to cover his losses, and his loans will be coming due, revealing the extent to which he is in debt up to a lot of foreign lenders

I could swear I read somewhere that he’s got some loans from the Bank of China coming due pretty damn soon, in the next year or two. A couple hundred million bucks, IIRC. Of course, I’m 100% certain he’ll do everything he can to stiff them on that, whether he’s POTUS or not.

I had thought for awhile there that Gov. DeWine was being fairly good on this. I have to wonder what pressure is being put in these governors to disregard public safety? And there seems to be this assumption that people will be adults and follow the rules and guidelines when there is more than enough proof they aren’t, or at least enough aren’t because of shitty leadership and conservative games to divide us. How many have to die before this is treated as a national emergency?

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight on its way from Lahore to Karachi, crashed in the area near Jinnah International Airport on Friday, according to Civil Aviation Authority officials.

Geo News reported that the plane crashed at the Jinnah Ground area near the airport as it was approaching for landing. There were more than 90 passengers on board the Airbus aircraft. Black smoke could be seen from afar at the crash site, say eye witnesses.

There were no immediate reports on the number of casualties. The aircraft arriving from the eastern city of Lahore was carrying 99 passengers and 8 crew members, news agency AP said, quoting Abdul Sattar Kokhar, spokesman for the country’s civil aviation authority.

So I got an unsolicited mail once from a “young Russian woman”…I had just installed my new Cyrillic keyboard and wanted to try out the сяазу васкщаrd alphabet, so I had a go at it, deciding that I would cut things off as soon as she started asking for money to come visit.

But it seems that she had money and wanted to come out on her own nickel and visit me…fascinating. I knew something was fishy, she never responded to personal questions about her likes and interests, just boilerplate stuff about her hometown somewhere in the Urals…

So I googled “Russian women + scam” and found out what “she” was setting up…she gives you a flight number and a time and date, and when you show up to pick her up, she does not come off the boarding ramp.

You get a desperate message that she is being held by customs and immigration, who require that she show that she has $1,000 in cash before she can enter, could you please just wire it through, she will pay it back as soon as she sees you….

Thing is those in the know. The government experts that every right wing jackass from here to the carcass of the original John Birch Society in Orange County have repeatedly dismissed did warn about this. They did think this was a possibility and no one in Trump’s team let alone Trump himself took the possibility of a pandemic seriously. We need to as a country stop falling for empty platitudes and rhetoric and focus on the experience, temperament, & knowledge of those who seek to run our government. Shit, Trump can’t even try to empathize with people who have lost their jobs or loved ones. I just hope the electorate ends this four year surreal nightmare in November and I can breathe a little easier.

I think it was a Hail Mary by a bunch of assholes who couldn’t accept that Biden beat their guy in the primary. This wasn’t something that has its origins in right wing media, its origins are in Greenwaldland and his disdain for the Democratic Party and mainstream left. Honestly, as a former journalist albeit a small time one in college, the complete lack of integrity by the likes of Ryan Grim and Nathan Robinson infuriate me. They didn’t look at her story at all. They just thought that the mere allegation would be enough to sink Joe and somehow Sanders would become the presumptive nominee by default instead of it being chaos. Those assholes have a lot to account for and yeah maybe I’m a little bitter that I’ve struggled finding work while these hacks make big bucks but fuck em.

I’ll say this again. Trump is uniquely disadvantaged as an incumbent because he actually has to run on his record rather than just empty “buhlieve me” or “I alone.” This thing is far from over but Covid exposed what us here knew about Trump all along and that’s that he had no business being President when he knew nothing about the position he ran for four years ago. Not its history and above all not the responsibility of the man or woman who is sworn in to do that job. My emotions get all over thinking about the damage Trump has done to our country and knowing we’re going to be living with it long after he eats his final Big Mac.

The US is already spending ourselves into oblivion.

China’s defense budget: $178 billion
Russia’s defense budget: $70 billion

The US defense budget, excluding off budget war spending: $721.5 billion

The GOP wants people to think that China and Russia are spending more than the US?

We’re spending nearly 3 times more than both countries combined. We’re spending 10x more than Russia alone. We’re spending 4x more than China alone.

Yet, Trump’s fucked up our defense posture with his disastrous covid19 response, meaning one of our carriers is laid up in Guam, other ships are dealing with outbreaks, and he’s diverting money meant to rebuild core infrastructure to build a boondoggle wall that can easily be scaled, cut, or circumvented altogether with a visa overstay.

His entire business model is about walking away and paying pennies on the dollar. Anyone loaning to him should have been aware of that. Which means they made these loans for other reasons than simply earning interest.

Though a loan not made to earn interest implies that it’s also a loan where they won’t settle for “pennies on the dollar” towards settling it.

Either they sorta won’t care and thus won’t collect on their investment. Or, if they deem Trump worthy of destroying at the time they can opt to drag things out for full payment since money is not what is being negotiated for at the time.

So I just heard Ohio is planning on allowing for weddings with up to 300 guests beginning 6/1. Beyond the obvious response to that, if you’re going to allow that large of a group to come together for a wedding, why bother with a size limit at all?

I had thought for awhile there that Gov. DeWine was being fairly good on this. I have to wonder what pressure is being put in these governors to disregard public safety? And there seems to be this assumption that people will be adults and follow the rules and guidelines when there is more than enough proof they aren’t, or at least enough aren’t because of shitty leadership and conservative games to divide us. How many have to die before this is treated as a national emergency?

And the “conservative” faction on my Facebook is busy patting themselves on the back about how conservatives are the ones who know how to act prudently and safely and thus don’t want or expect any government intervention or rules telling them how to act.

Anyhow, if you flip the three states that are outside the margin of error (MI, PA, WI)* from 2016, then Joe Biden is the 46th President of the United States, 278 EVs to 260. And that’s before we talk about the other states slipping away from Trump**, as he’s not leading in any of them, and they are more likely than not to correlate with the national result.

When the Mob makes a loan, they are often not interested in seeing it repaid: they use it as leverage to muscle in and take over part of the operation for money laundering or other purposes, which, I suspect, we are going to start to uncover at some point when things start coming out about Trump.

Staten Island comes to mind, as do parts of Long Island. You don’t have to go far in NJ to see something similar. Parts of the Jersey shore are Redneck Riviera territory. And the common thread is that they think that they’re impervious to covid19 and that we have to reopen so that things return to normal quickly, ignoring the fact that doing so imperils everyone around them.

re: #64 steve_davis

Okay. Broke down and ordered a custom Maingear rig. should be good for anything gaming-wise. who wants to make suggestions? I don’t love first-person shooters, although that could be because they tend to make me sea-sick. i’m assuming that with an i9 10900k, an nvidia 2070 super, 16 gigs of ram and a game loaded on m.2 storage, I should maybe be able to get the frame-rate high enough to where it’s not like trying to read in the back of a car with bad suspension.

Probably depends on the game and the game server.

I play Arma 3 with a group of people and the following are all factors in terms of FPS:
1. Game server specs (we rent server space, so I don’t have specifics)
2. Number of players on the server (I’ve seen stuff go from fine 30-60 fps to crap 1-5 fps simply by adding another five players.)
3. PC specs (Yours look very good compared to mine. RAM is pretty important and my performance got much more consistent in terms of not lagging when I went from 8 to 16 gigs.)
4. Arma 3 engine not the most current and efficient thing. And scenario design can have a great effect on fps depending on how much processing and information the server is trying to push out to the players. (I do a bit of scenario design, and there are tricks to try to minimize or reduce this.)
5. Internet connection (easy for distance or poor connection to simply cause issues.)

One thing has not changed much since 2016 that bothers me: our entire election system is not robust enough to withstand a concerted attempt to meddle, interfere and disrupt it, rendering its results doubtful or invalid.

And the more the GOP founders with Trump at the helm the more likely they are to start looking at that option.

The GOP cannot replace Trump without losing the rabid base of support they rely on.

A repeat of 2016, in which the GOP could count on 30% of the electorate getting out for Trump and another 30% just staying home in disgust, is not likely to repeat itself.

A classic case of taking an election for granted via reliance on over-positive polling (which led Dewey to conduct a “safe” campaign which inspired precisely no one).

The best story about the 1948 race I recall (which is probably apocryphal) was that Dewey bragged to his wife on Election Night that “tomorrow you’ll be sleeping with the President-Elect!”

To which Mrs. Dewey’s response, the next day, was supposedly:

When the Mob makes a loan, they are often not interested in seeing it repaid: they use it as leverage to muscle in and take over part of the operation for money laundering or other purposes, which, I suspect, we are going to start to uncover at some point when things start coming out about Trump.

Our federal and state governments of compromised officials is proof of that already happening.

In case you were wondering how things are going in my state with the Casinos back open…

The 12 Coast casinos closed March 16, unsure of what was ahead, and they began reopening at 8 a.m. Thursday with management and customers still not knowing what to expect.

Golden Nugget Biloxi was one of the casinos that opened at 8 a.m., the first time allowed by the Mississippi Gaming Commission. People were already waiting at the door at 5:30 a.m.

“It feels great,” Pat Cress of Ocean Springs said as she came in through the main entrance and gazed around. She and Linda Bailey walked across the Biloxi Bay Bridge, as they typically do, on the way to the casino.

“We’re just going to walk around and look,” Bailey said. They planned to check out their favorite slot machines.

Slots, table games, and other amenities opened at 8 a.m. Thursday with social distancing and health-safety protocols in place at Golden Nugget Casino in Biloxi.

The hotel had opened Wednesday night and Golden Nugget General Manager Chett Harrison said they had around 100 rooms booked.

“The pent-up demand’s there,” he said.

He was encouraged as hundreds of people were in the casino soon after it opened, one man from New Jersey, a woman from Florida among the first customers.

“I think throughout the day it’s going to continue to ramp up and pick up by mid-afternoon, he said.

People were already at the restaurants that were open, while others played the slots. Some of the machines are grouped in pods so people aren’t sitting next to each other. The slot machines in rows have some of the machines turned off to keep the new social distancing regulations from the Mississippi Gaming Commission.

Regulars were the first ones in the door at Palace Casino Biloxi when it opened at 10 a.m. The casino reported that within an hour after opening, a local player won a jackpot of over $90,000. The player, who asked not to be identified, was playing the Dollar Storm Progressive slot machine.

Now like I said yesterday, I’m not stepping foot in a casino around here anytime soon. The rest of y’all send me good juju regardless. I don’t want to get sick.

Did CNN really run a poll showing Trump was winning?

he might be referring to this from a couple of days ago

analysis by electoral-vote in it’s entirety

CNN is the latest outlet to publish a poll finding that while voters on the whole prefer Joe Biden (51% to 46%) to Donald Trump, voters in battleground states prefer Trump (52% to 45%).

We are not entirely sure what to make of polls like this, especially since they don’t break their numbers down by state. After all, it could be the case that Trump has a small lead across all of the battleground states, or it could be that he’s well ahead in a few of them. Those scenarios would both produce the same polling result (but, most likely, a very different electoral result). On top of that, CNN’s finding in the swing states cannot be reconciled with the state-level polls that we’re seeing. You could go through our database, and take Trump’s best recent poll in each of the 15 battleground states (as the list is defined by CNN), and he still wouldn’t be up 7 points on Joe Biden. We have to wonder if their model of the electorate is a little wonky.

Affirming our sense that the CNN poll has missed the bullseye (and also affirming the previous item, as well) is this piece from Politico, for which they talked to a dozen prominent Republicans (former governors, members of Congress, party leaders) in the battleground states. Those folks are in agreement that the President is on shaky ground, and also that “Joe Biden is bad” is not going to be enough to get him reelected. Over and over, they used the same word we did, namely “referendum.” And they are particularly concerned about the Midwestern states of Michigan and Wisconsin and the not Midwestern state of Pennsylvania. While the plural of anecdote is not “data,” it is the case that the pros’ sense of things lines up much better with the state-by-state polling data than these odd polls that treat the battleground states as one cohesive entity. I’m sure he isn’t going to: I think it’s a reasonable assumption that the Biden team is going to be vetting VP possibilities for competence, experience and good campaign skills. Looks, per se, are likely to be the least of it. Besides, the “pick a woman for VP for the novelty value” thing has been done already…..

Definitely and I think the names of women I’ve seen that Biden’s team is looking at are good ones. Some I like more than others but there’s a lot to like about most of the names. My personal choice is Harris because I’m seeing how hard she’s working in the Senate and I think she could be a great asset for Joe but I’m also open to some of the other names too. RIght, nevermind the fact that women like Senators Harris and Cortez-Masto have been elected attorneys general in their respective state or Duckworth being Senator from a large state and also serving in the Obama VA not to mention her military service, etc. Palin was a half term governor from a state with less people than the DC Metro area who showed that she lacked not only the temperment for the job but the intelligence..

Joke aside, there’s a lot of great names being floated. I do think Joe should go younger than 60 and west of Delaware for his pick but other than that? I’m happy.

Think of our modern military as being akin to the Maginot Line — designed to help us win the last war but ineffective in the contemporary world. Other than the 1991 Iraq War, when have we really emerged victorious from the use of our weaponry in traditional combat? Putin certainly discovered that it was far less expensive and far more successful to get a Russian asset into the White House, given control of our foreign policy, and perhaps given access to much of the top secret information that we have on his regime and those within who are working for us.

I dunno, of all the Senators mentioned as possible VP choices for the Dems, only one (Warren) would result in the (possible) loss of a Senate seat: MA has a Republican Governor, who would appoint a replacement until a Special Election 5-6 months down the road. That’s very true. The only I would worry about possibly losing is Nevada with Cortez-Masto but I think Nevada is an increasingly blue state.

Oliver Darcy: “Trump is saying the quiet part out loud again. He is making it quite clear that he does not view Fox News as a legitimate news organization. If he did, he would not believe that Fox’s job is to be working to help reelect him and other Republicans. But Trump views the network as his mouthpiece. And given most of the network’s coverage, it’s hard to fault him for the misunderstanding…”

re: #257 Teddy’s Person

Oh, I think she meant it literally. If you look at Palin’s cheerleaders from back in the day, most comments centered on her looks and how it made them, uh “feel.” Remember Rich Lowry’s little starbursts through the screen.

As I’ve mentioned here previously, before the 2016 election, I was listening to the conversation between two men discussing the candidates. The one topic they agreed on was that Melania was gorgeous and Trump had no reason to be less than faithful to her, whereas Hillary was positively unattractive and Bill’s extramarital flings were certainly understandable.

re: #253 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)

The great thing all this vetting is doing is showcasing the diversity of the party and its elected officials though.

My sister and BIL are both unhappy with Biden’s announcement that he is going to select a woman, because somehow they think that has backed him into a corner and he won’t be able to select the imaginary “best” candidate.

My sister’s favorite is Sherrod Brown — who, if he had been running for President, I certainly would have seriously considered and would have definitely preferred to Biden. Among those running in the primaries, my sister really liked Amy but she always felt that the Democrats lacked anyone with the charisma needed to defeat Trump.

They will both vote for Biden but I think they both are limited by their view that, given Biden’s age (and possibility of not making it through his first term), somehow you need a White Christian male as running mate so that the vast racist, religious, misogynist voting bloc will feel comfortable with selecting Biden.

i was gonna make a whole lot of comments about the ration of males to females, that there are lots of smart people and then realized it’s really way too simple:

who’s to say the imaginary ‘best’ candidate isnt a woman?

Weren’t Obama and his FP team (including Hillary) watching the raid live? Didn’t it basically happen that night after Obama’s performance at the WHCA dinner?

You’re right. I should have said he did the WHCA dinner knowing that the raid was about to happen.

That he could go to a dinner and deliver a hilarious monologue, knowing that an operation was going to happen that could have absolutely destroyed his presidency had it gone wrong - still pretty badass.

No — Hillary is the past; we need someone much younger who represents the future. So Biden’s VP pick has to be a woman who can take over now and serve a second term.

New Mexico County Official Couy Griffin Calls For The Death Of Democrats

Deplorable: A church full of Christians cheered as New Mexico county commissioner and founder of Cowboys for Trump Couy Griffin declared that “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.”

Associated Press reports:

The founder of the group Cowboys for Trump and a New Mexico county commissioner is facing calls to resign after he said in a video, “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.”

In a despicable display of dangerous rhetoric, Otero County Commissioner and founder of Cowboys for Trump Couy Griffin, speaking at the New Hope Revival Church in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, declared:

I’ve come to a place where I’ve come to the conclusion that the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.

Adding insult to injury, after declaring “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat” those in attendance at the Christian church cheered with delight.

Venezuela says Iranian tankers will get military escort (AFP via Yahoo on sabre rattling)

Caracas (AFP) - Venezuela on Wednesday said its navy and air force would escort Iranian tankers arriving with much needed fuel, after Tehran warned of “consequences” if the US stopped the ships from reaching their destination.

“We’re ready for whatever, whenever,” President Nicolas Maduro told state-run media, thanking “all the support” from its Middle East ally in its confrontation with the United States.

Venezuela has the world’s largest proven oil reserves, but its capacity to refine crude into gasoline is limited.

US President Donald Trump’s administration has imposed unilateral sanctions aimed at ending oil exports from Iran and Venezuela, both major crude producers. Washington has also sanctioned individual Venezuelans and Iranians.

In early April the US military said it was increasing its vigilance and deploying warships in the ocean near Venezuela, arguing that there was an increase in organized crime.

Gun group threatens to descend on Texas town after sheriff arrests COVID-19 protesters

The vice president of gun rights group Open Carry Texas warned Ector County Sheriff on Thursday that when he returns to Odessa, he is going to bring 150 men with him.

In a video posted on San Angelo LIVE! and the Open Carry Texas Facebook page, David Amad expressed anger that Sheriff Mike Griffis arrested protesters earlier this month at Daddy Zane’s sports bar in West Odessa, an unincorporated area of the Texas oil town known mostly for its high school football.

Amad is hoping that his message will be more clear on June 6, when he said he and other members of the Second Amendment rights group will converge on Odessa.

They’re making their move everywhere. Lock and load, Red-state Dems, this is it.

Read somewhere (was it a comment here?) that actually it’s zinc that is needed that combats COVID-19 but it needs another drug to mediate its penetration into the cells and hydroxychloroquine plays that role.

Check out Dr Seheult’s Medcram vids on YT, updates 32 and 34.
