YouTube

Democratic presidential candidate, Joseph Biden, Jr., links up with Stephen Colbert for a frank conversation about the nation’s leadership crisis, which is compounding the suffering caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In this full, uninterrupted interview, the former Vice President walks through his plan to beat Donald Trump in November and says he will be ready on day one to take over the government’s pandemic response, restore economic security with moves like relieving student loan debt, and mend fences with America’s beleaguered partners overseas. #StephenAtHome #JoeBiden #Election2020

Trump says he will “override the governors” if they don’t allow churches to reopen this weekend.

He had no such authority. In fact, the Constitution explicitly prohibits this.

I suspect that he even knows but also knows that this will bring his Fundamentalist (grifter) base to revere him with even more ardent adulation as God’s Chosen President.

Sending evangelicals out to infect each other during a pandemic sounds like something a really cunning Antichrist would do.

Would be fine if they weren’t going to also cross-infect a lot of other people as well…

Many of us are concerned that, due to the plans to develop this vaccine on such an accelerated schedule, the initial version may be neither safe nor effective, but designed solely to improve Trump’s re-election chances. Suppose a vaccine is released on October 15. Do you really believe that it’s a good idea to take it? It would not be surprising if the manufacturer is not liable for adverse side effects and if the government also refuses to accept any responsibility either.

The accelerated schedule is the same sort of schedule used for the Ebola vaccine which was developed.

The safety is probably not in question; companies have been making vaccines for a long time. They know what can safely go in a vaccine. That argument is FUD from antivaxxers.

As for it being released in time for the election as an October Surprise, most epidemiologists are pretty sure that no vaccine could be developed even within twelve months, simply because of what goes into researching a vaccine.

Pharma companies are largely protected from vaccine lawsuits because there is a very low profit margin on vaccines and vaccines are vital for public health. That doesn’t prevent a pharma company which put out a bad vaccine from being destroyed in a boycott.

re: #100 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Ebola has been a threat for decades and has been extensively studied during that entire time; this is a novel coronavirus, around for only about 6 months, and there are no existing vaccines for any coronavirus, though there was one (or more?) under development before the funding was eliminated and the project abandoned.

I’d be more willing to take it if it was developed outside on the US. A Trump-endorsed vaccine made by private interests? Maybe I wouldn’t want to be at the front of the line.

About Reade’s “expert” testimony:

Reade has testified in at least 20 cases in the last decade. One of them involves Victoria Ramirez and Jennifer Vazquez, who were sent to prison for life in 2018 after they tried to burn down the home of Ramirez’ boyfriend after they caught him boinking another woman. Reade, then known as Alexandra McCabe, testified about the nature of intimate partner violence—specifically, why the boyfriend initially claimed he saw two women fleeing the scene, but later told police that he actually saw two men on the run.

Vazquez’ lawyer, Roland Soltesz, recalled that Reade’s testimony was critical to prosecutors making their case that Vazquez and Ramirez actually set the fire. His law partner, William Pernik, underscored just how serious this could potentially be if it turns out Reade lied about her credentials.

As if things aren’t bad enough:

About 1 in 5 adults in England believe the coronavirus is to some extent a hoax, according to research on conspiracy theories by the University of Oxford.

In addition, researchers found nearly 3 out of 5 adults in England believe the government is misleading them to some extent about the cause of the virus, and nearly 1 in 10 strongly agree that China developed the coronavirus to destroy the West — which is utterly false.

“A disconcertingly high number of adults in England do not agree with the scientific and governmental consensus on the coronavirus pandemic,” the researchers found.

The research was based on surveys of 2,500 adults earlier this month and published in the journal, Psychological Medicine.

Unfortunately, in this time and place, former VP Biden can’t really afford to have many (if ANY) “gaffes” out there on the public record. He’s got to know that any “off” comment - howevermuch meant to be a “joke” - is going to be seized on, misquoted/misinterpreted, and endlessly recycled by his political enemies (with the “Mainstream Media” clucking in to appease the Magical Balance Fairy). I know it’s an unfortunate circumstance that a Presidential candidate might have to preface any joke with a disclaimer that “this is a joke” - but sadly, given that Biden’s opponent this time around is (disgracefully) a President who tries to wave away so many of his truly imbecilic statements with insincere “I was joking” BS, Joe really ought to be more careful.

“Low-level Unseemly Grift”: has Mike Pompeo finally crossed the Trumpian line? by Abigail Tracy, Vanity Fair.

Predictably, Republicans have largely been mum on Pompeo and the firing of Linick. House Democrats, meanwhile, are pushing forward with an investigation. “It’s disappointing that Secretary Pompeo didn’t seize the opportunity to clear up the questions surrounding his recommendation to fire Inspector General Linick, or to commit to fulfilling the records request I made with Senator Menendez,” Eliot Engel, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement after Pompeo’s presser Wednesday. “Our investigation will go forward and we still hope for the Secretary’s cooperation.” But as the last several years have borne out, Trump cares little about misconduct by officials in his administration—until it threatens his own ambitions.

And as we all know, churches have repeatedly been a nexus of outbreaks across nation. Pastors and rabbis have died of covid19 and/or spread it to their parishioners (and vice versa). Funerals have resulted in outbreaks. Weddings. All manner of gathering in a religious setting. That’s the problem.

re: #93 Hecuba’s daughter

Many of us are concerned that, due to the plans to develop this vaccine on such an accelerated schedule, the initial version may be neither safe nor effective, but designed solely to improve Trump’s re-election chances. Suppose a vaccine is released on October 15. Do you really believe that it’s a good idea to take it? It would not be surprising if the manufacturer is not liable for adverse side effects and if the government also refuses to accept any responsibility either.

from this AM’s electoral-vote.com

Michael McCoyd and Jessie Moravek in a well-researched opinion piece for The New York Times. They draw our attention to what happened with the polio vaccine several generations ago, pointing out that it took a very long time to develop, that there were setbacks in the manufacturing process that resulted in a batch from one factory being fatal, and that it took many years to achieve a herd-immunity level of vaccination, particularly in poor communities. That’s not to say that things will go just as badly with COVID-19, but they could. And, at very least, it is probably wise to expect some setbacks, as opposed to zero setbacks. And thus to have a Plan B which, by all evidences, does not exist at this moment.

Yeah but I the main point I was trying to make is we probably shouldn’t be inventing things to worry about right now (let the experts do that behind closed doors and deal with it) and cross that bridge when we get to it.

That and, although they probably didn’t mean it that way, the number of people saying *here* that they wouldn’t get that vaccine when available for whatever reason seemed just anti—science enough to make my ass twitch.

The best thing to do if a Trump supporter claims that this shows that Biden is racist, is to say “let’s ask your black friends if this is racist”. It would probably stop at “black friends”.

Yeah but I the main point I was trying to make is we probably shouldn’t be inventing things to worry about right now (let the experts do that behind closed doors and deal with it) and cross that bridge when we get to it.

That and, although they probably didn’t mean it that way, the number of people saying *here* that they wouldn’t get that vaccine when available for whatever reason seemed just anti—science enough to make my ass twitch.

fair enough

The polio vaccine was first developed in the 1950s.

We hadn’t even discovered DNA before 1953. I’m not quite sure that 1950s issues with development, manufacture, and distribution of a vaccine are not apples and oranges to 2020s issues.

DNA was a known entity prior to 1953, but the structure was not known. Also, the was no knowledge of a triplet codon (three nucleotideps) defining an amino acid and thus DNA being the information carrier in a cell.

It depends a) under which administration it’s under, and b) how long after release are we talking about? (Because no matter what, it is NOT going to be available immediately to everyone…)

A former White House aide won a $3 million federal contract to supply respirator masks to Navajo Nation hospitals in New Mexico and Arizona 11 days after he created a company to sell personal protective equipment in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Zach Fuentes, President Donald Trump’s former deputy chief of staff, secured the deal with the Indian Health Service with limited competitive bidding and no prior federal contracting experience.

The IHS told ProPublica it has found that 247,000 of the masks delivered by Fuentes’ company — at a cost of roughly $800,000 — may be unsuitable for medical use. An additional 130,400, worth about $422,000, are not the type specified in the procurement data, the agency said.

re: #110 Hecuba’s daughter

Ebola has been a threat for decades and has been extensively studied during that entire time; this is a novel coronavirus, around for only about 6 months, and there are no existing vaccines for any coronavirus, though there was one (or more?) under development before the funding was eliminated and the project abandoned.

There was a vaccine under development for SARS-CoV but abandoned because lockdowns and quarantines ended the spread. It is now known that SARS-CoV2 is about 70% similar to the first virus, so research into vaccines have started there.

The issue though was production and other ingredients which go into vaccines; those have been around for ages. Production of vaccines in general is safe, which is why when new ones come out they don’t kill a bunch of people.

The same stuff was floated about Gardicil vaccine (aside from the conservaderp about making girls promiscuous) that it would be dangerous because “who knows what goes into this stuff?”

Vaccines get treated like chemtrail canisters nowadays: Nobody knows what’s in that stuff.

Except we do, and no vaccine manufacturer is going to be injecting live RNA viruses into people. They are looking for specific proteins found in the shell of a virus, which cannot replicate, but will trigger the body’s immune system.

The other problem is, that in the 1950s, crackpot nutbars gibbering about Sinister Conspiracies* regarding vaccines didn’t have a distribution network for their bullshit more sophisticated than mimeographed sheets stapled to telephone poles: nowadays we have an all-pervasive Internet to ensure that ANY conspiracy-theory nonsense- however insane- gets maximum spread. “Progress”…

I’ve read several doomer articles that go through everything that could go wrong with vaccine, without mentioning the likelihoods or the contrary evidence that makes the situation unlikely. We have over 100 vaccines in development globally, three currently in phase II trials. There are multiple different pathways being explored, from very conventional to essentially anti-COVID RNA “viruses”. With modern technology, we can analyze new strains in hours and build new proteins in days, where in the 1950s it was like banging rocks together in comparison.

So there are likely to be setbacks and not everything will work as expected, but this persistent vaccine doomerism is degenerating into media clickbait. No, you can’t count on a 100% effective, 100% safe virus on 1 October, but to assume that there will never be effective protection is getting perverse considering what has actually been accomplished.

“I do that to white media and black media because my wife has to go on at 6 o’clock,” Biden said, referring to his wife Jill Biden apparently needing to use the broadcast studio they’ve built in their basement in Delaware as the coronavirus pandemic has knocked Biden off the campaign trail. Glancing at his watch, Biden said, “uh oh, I’m in trouble.”

So right away she goes to the race card, whether he was joking or not started the whole exchange. But of course, The media just pounced on what Biden said. And republicans, well whatever

re: #326 EPR-radar

If any of this nonsense is ongoing, it should be stopped immediately. The results are in, and hydroxychloroquine does more harm than good for covid19 treatment.

Nope, can’t. The leader of the conservative faith has issued his version of a Papal Bull. All conservatives must now follow the faith or be excommunicated.

reuters.com

The VA said it will continue to dispense the drug under the guidelines of the Food and Drug Administration.

In answer to a question from [Democratic Senator Chuck] Schumer, the VA said it was not pressured into using hydroxychloroquine by the White House, the Department of Health and Human Services or any other federal agency.

“VA, like so many medical facilities across this nation, is in a race to keep patients alive during this pandemic, and we are using as many tools as we can,” the VA told Schumer.

VA director Robert Wilkie is a conservative first. He started working on Capitol Hill for Sen. Jesse Helms, then moved to Senator Trent Lott. After that, he worked directly for President GW Bush.

He then worked as an engineer for one of the largest construction firms in the world (which worked on projects for the London Summer Olympics), then became a senior advisor to Sen. Thom Tillis before being appointed by Trump to the VA.

Same on the state level here with the no-bid contract for the TestNebraska programme which is mostly a data-harvesting programme and not a testing programme.

Conservatives lurve handing out your tax money without oversight. Legalised burglary.

Same here in Nebraska.

Well, sort of.

The Young Republicans went further though:

well, I figured it wouldn’t be good enough, but that was about five seconds worth of Googling, and that was about five seconds more than I planned to spend on looking up stuff about this (there was more stuff but I got better things to waste time on).
