Kinda what we’re working on. Tuberville is crazier and less politically competent than Roy Moore.

Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.

Kind of amazing that this mild whine is more resistance than Trump has gotten from Republicans in years.

The Q-nuts in that thread are supporting Jeff Sessions. Man that whole thread is like a circular firing squad.

It was said in the special election that Doug Jones was uniquely blessed with a bad candidate in Roy Moore. This may work out just as good for him.

Ouch, that could hurt my mother. My late step-father drove for Hertz for many years and retired from the company when his health started failing. My mother collects a portion of his retirement pay.

So Friday is my bank and post office day since the stay at home order, and since it’s on the way, I stopped in the Walgreens to pick up a couple of things.

And what to my wondering eyes appears but a shelf with disposable surgical masks, hand sanitizer, and a few other cleaning things. Surgical masks and sanitizer. Will wonders never cease.

(Hardly any paper products aside from those masks, though. You can’t have everything.)

Hertz going bankrupt would flood the used car market with hundreds of thousands of cars to sell off as assets all at once.

Hertz is filing chapter 11, not chapter 7. Business will continue largely as usual; stock holders will get wiped out and bond holders will take a haircut.

At least, I hope that that’s what happens. I’ve been President’s Circle for years. May need to rent something again once this Covid thing is over.

Terry Reid was Jimmy Page’s first choice for vocalist in the new band he was forming after the Yardbirds broke up.

One nice thing about Austin- we tend to leave famous people be. One day when I was in the local HEB (grocery) AKA The Ocho! (eighth store to open in Texas AKA The UN HEB), I’m picking up some Whit Fowler’s Two-Alarm Chile Mix and I look over and there’s this older guy with half-glasses peering at a bottle of spice rub.

I got my box of dried chile fixin’s goodness and was going to pick up black beans and crushed tomatoes when it clicked. I mumbled under my breath “Hi, Bob, hope you are doing well.” Mr Plant turned to me and said, “You know why I like this town? People leave me alone. No one bugs me, I can walk my dog in the park.” “Well”, I said, “you’re living with Patty, she’s a home girl and you’re our neighbor. Family.”

Saw him a few times after that. We visited a bit. Told him that my brother-in-law was Bob Thomas, a founding member of Silly Wizard (a Scots folk-fusion band), and we spent ten minutes talking about how folk influences had influenced English rock bands. In a grocery store.

Nice guy.

He and Patty Griffin eventually split and he was back off the UK.

I’m not a business person, so I read up at Investopedia on what a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing entails.

They say that is the most complex and expensive of the types of filings, but it allows the company to advance a plan to reorganise. If the company advances no plan, the debt holders can advance one to the court instead. That can include liquidating all the assets.

We’ll have to see what happens I guess.

If the Autoweek article is correct, not only would liquidation of their auto fleet destroy the used car market, it would probably damage the new car lease and sale market as well. Any used car from a rental agency would be scrupulously maintained by the company, and the records of that maintenance available.

Club Foot was a renowned dive that was gone by the time I got here in 1989. Did you hit the Boat House or Charlie’s when you were here? A dear friend of ours, who recently died, was a signature draw at the the Boat House’s drag nights, as either Miss Bitch or Biss Mitch. That wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. In all honesty, it could prove to be fairly lucrative….the caveat being that Trump would need to let someone who actually knows what they’re doing run the show and he needs to hang back and be a Roger Ailes type, maybe give him a daily segment where he can rant for a few minutes, like an editorial slot or something.

That being said, like so much of what Trump does, this too will probably end in abject failure.

So yeah, just found out news that kind of is going to make it hard to sleep tonight.

I don’t talk about it much, but I know others here are wrestling fans, and while I’m not as ardent a follower of it as others in my circle of online friends, Japan is one of the big epicenters of wrestling, especially in regards to women’s wrestling (called ‘joshi puroresu’).

I lead in with that because one of the rising stars of Stardom, one of the top Joshi promotions in Japan, was found dead of likely suicide, at only 22 years old:

This apparently stemmed from harassment, threats, and cyberbullying toward her over her part in the Japanese reality show Terrace House. Not helped was her background as a half-Japanese woman who’s fought prejudice most of her life too, something she tried to channel in wrestling (at one point, she created a ‘stable’, a team of wrestlers, who were either half-Japanese like herself or ‘gaijin’, a somewhat pejorative term for foreigners in Japan that is nonetheless used colloquially in wrestling parlance to refer to non-Japanese wrestlers working in Japanese promotions).

At one point, she apparently tweeted out pictures of self-harm as well as tweets lamenting her lack of acceptance.

As a wrestling fan, as someone who has struggled with depressive thoughts and have friends with well diagnosed depression, and just a general empathetic human being who has hated how much bullying gets a pass, it’s just…fucking a rough thing to learn.

Looks like the only thing more contagious than SARS-CoV-2 is brainworms:

Fighting misinformation and conspiracy theories about the novel coronavirus has almost been as hard as battling the pandemic itself. And a new survey has found that one conspiracy theory about Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is taking hold.

A conspiracy theory that Gates is planning to use a future COVID-19 vaccine to implant microchips in billions of people in order to monitor their movements has gained supporters particularly among Fox News viewers and Republicans, the survey found.

The representative survey of 1,640 US adults by YouGov for Yahoo News found that half of respondent Americans who say Fox News is their primary television news source believe the conspiracy theory. It’s the largest group responding this way, followed by self-described Republicans and “Voted for Donald Trump in 2016” — 44% of both those groups said they believed the conspiracy theory was true. Twenty-six percent of respondent Republicans said it was false, and 31% said they weren’t sure.

True statement. Black people are not ambivalent. They’re not undecided. The 8% or whatever it is who support Trump… they know exactly why, and they’re certain about it. And the 92% who don’t support Trump… they also know exactly why, and they’re certain about it.

Yeah, Hayes basically doubled-down without acknowledging that he was doubling down. He avoided talking about the fact that there’s 20+ cases under review where she perjured herself as an “expert witness” or that she got a law degree through fraudulent means. Really, he didn’t touch on anything that totally undermines her credibility, he just brought in the Vox reporter he had on before to comment on how TR’s lawyer dropped her after only 2 weeks and then the two speculated together on how she could be totally truthful about the assault while at the same time being a con artist.

That being said, like so much of what Trump does, this too will probably end in abject failure.

Casinos could be lucrative too. But everything Trump touches dies.

Some pretty cool info about Beto’s virtual voter registration drive: dailykos.com

More than 1,000 people signed up for our voter registration phone bank on Monday.

We all Zoomed into a video gathering at 6:30pm, got ourselves pumped up, and were off to the races, our first phone calls going out ten minutes later.

By 8:30, this group of amazing, persistent volunteers had made more than 80,000 phone calls to known Democrats who’d recently moved to Texas.

We called people who had reliably voted in the Democratic primary in their former home state, but have yet to update their voter registration in Texas. They’d been mailed voter registration forms a few days before our calls. We were calling to remind them that all they have to do now is sign it and put it in the mail.

From May 11 in Autoweek:

Rental Giant Hertz Could Be in Bankruptcy in Weeks, Destroying What’s Left of the Used Car Market

Hertz going bankrupt would flood the used car market with hundreds of thousands of cars to sell off as assets all at once.

It was explained to me that Car Rental companies actually make most of their profit buying and selling cars:

They purchase new cars cheaply at a bulk rate, the car rental end of things operates at cost and then they sell the barely-used cars off (generally in good shape) after a year or so and actually make a profit on that.

Pawn shop impacted by reservation checkpoints (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link):

Bill Houston, owner of E-Z Pawn, made the decision to keep his doors open while businesses across the state proceeded to close theirs with COVID-19 concerns and health safety measures in mind.

As a business owner, Houston said, he felt as if there was no need to temporarily close his long standing Scottsbluff business. He believed the daily foot traffic which typically comes through the store is not at high enough numbers to present a significant COVID-19 transmission risk.

Houston said E-Z Pawn does not solely rely on daily in-person business at the store, but also the weekly trips he makes to Indian Reservations across Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota, to sell a variety of items.

“Ninety-five percent of my money comes from going and selling on the reservations, and about five percent here in the shop,” Houston said.

As a business which Houston said “sells just about everything,” the impacts from COVID-19 are quite different than a typical business that solely relies on store front customer business. However, ravel restrictions into the Indian Reservations at this point in time have presented a significant monetary impact to E-Z Pawn.

“The governor (of South Dakota) said her administration has received complaints about the checkpoints and they have caused problems for people who are trying to access the reservation for reasons such as ranching or store deliveries,” according to the Associated Press.

During the first part of March, Houston said, he made his last trips to a number of reservations and has not been able to go back since.

The Texas Supremes (Goes to Juanita Jean’s)

About that state supreme court case about mail ballots in Texas, in which Dan Patrick says that “fear of catching coronavirus is not a valid reason” under Texas absentee ballot law to get a ballot (Narrator: It absolutely is)?

God works in mysterious ways, and I can prove it.

“Texas Supreme Court Justice Tests Positive for Coronavirus”

The little print says, “We began to exhibit symptoms last week, despite diligently complying with stay-at-home rules,” the justice wrote.

Justice Debra Lehrmann and her husband both got the virus.

Now it gets interesting.

Lehrmann’s doctor has told her that it takes at least 10 days to recover from the coronavirus but that she must track how she feels and be symptom-free for three days before being sure that the virus is gone. She is now on her 10th day of having the virus, and her husband is on his 11th day, she said. But they’ve both measured a fever this week, which means the infection is still there.

So, ten days and then three days of being symptom-free. So, let’s say around two weeks. That pretty much covers the early voting and election day period in Texas. So, good thing she didn’t get sick around the election time because it would have been too late to get her a mail-in ballot.
.
Would somebody please send her the math on this?

Hypocrite.

Texas Supreme Court Justice Tests Positive for Coronavirus (Texas Lawyer)

Her diagnosis hasn’t impacted her work on the high court, she noted, since the court has been working remotely.

“We are grateful for your thoughts and prayers,” Lehrmann added.

Lehrmann did not sound or appear ill on Wednesday when she participated in a Zoom oral argument in an appeal over vote-by-mail ballots during the coronavirus crisis. (my emphasis)

She participated in the argument by peppering both the attorneys for the state and county election administrators throughout the oral argument.

Lehrmann said that she, her husband, her son and daughter-in-law have all tested positive for the virus. Lehrmann added that she suspects her infant grandson also got it but has already recovered. The family got together for Mother’s Day, and began feeling sick the next day, May 11.

re: #116 Decatur Deb

The Wehrmacht maintained the Wiemar regulations that prohibited membership in political parties. (That includes the naval and Luftwaffe branches, though they notably did not enforce it.) Most dead POWs would not have been NAZI party members.

Which makes the whole idea that Nazi POWs should be buried with the Nazi Party symbol engraved on an official VA headstone in a national cemetery even stranger, or that the VA would defend it.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation made the initial complaint after a Jewish family visiting a fallen family member came across one of the graves.

While most of the foreign troops’ grave markers list only names and dates of death, the three in question are also engraved with with a swastika in the center of an iron cross and in inscription in German which reads “He died far from his home for the Führer, people and fatherland.”

The cemeteries are in Utah and Texas. The Army owned the cemeteries at the time and approved both the swastikas and the message. The VA argues they are “historical” and should not be removed (sounds like the Lost Causers and their statues).

“The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 assigns stewardship responsibilities to federal agencies, including VA and Army, to protect historic resources, including those that recognize divisive historical figures or events,” National Cemetery Administration spokesman Les’ Melnyk said in response to questions about the graves.

“For this reason, VA will continue to preserve these headstones, like every past administration has.”

Some veterans call that stance offensive.

No shit it’s offensive. The National Cemetery Administration spokesman also gave a non-answer.

Officials did not respond to questions regarding whether the swastika symbol has prompted similar comments in the past, or if leadership has discussed adding any new signage to explain why the gravestones were approved at the cemeteries.

Military and VA officials in the past have fought expansion of religious symbols for use on headstones at official ceremonies, including years-long litigation in the early 2000s to block Wiccan followers from displaying the pentagram on federal property. Those restrictions have been loosened some in ensuing years.

I recall the fight by Wiccans, waged against the VA policies and conservatives for nearly twenty years before their pentagram was approved for VA headstones. (A similar fight was waged by atheists/humanists.)

In addition to MRFF, the Southern Poverty Law Center and ADF have signed on to the case.

Probably as an indicator of affiliation. The grave markers include the identification of the soldier’s service to whatever.

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  May 23, 2020 • 2:16:06am

I can see a veteran going into one of those cemeteries and smashing the Iron Cross/Swastika symbol on a gravestone with a hammer.

They’d probably be arrested for vandalising federal property, but he or she would probably think it was worth it, and the VA trying to justify replacing such a stone with a new one with the praise for Hitler and another swastika would be one hell of a shitshow in Congress.

Tax money would have to pay for it, and I’d be lighting up the phones to my Republicypher representative and senators demanding a “no” vote.

The Military Times article linked above shows one of the headstones.

Foreign POWs buried in US military cemeteries have their nation and birth and death dates shown on stones. Only these Nazi stones have the Hitler praise and symbols of their regime.

Never, ever buy a used car that came off a rental lot. For much the same reason you don’t want to buy a used graphics card that was part of a mining rig.

The Sioux nations face the same issues, though I am not at all sure to what degree.

Back when my family had a better looking financial outlook, we sponsored a family for several years on the Pine Ridge rez through an organization called One Spirit. You don’t send money, you are given info and contact info about those you sponsor and you meet basic needs plus stuff for back to school, birthdays and holidays. I started off with the oldest child in a family and then found out he had two younger siblings that had no sponsor so we unofficially took them into our giving. Once the oldest graduated HS his family fell apart and we fell out of touch, One Spirit couldn’t find them either. But I do know we helped, the kids were grateful and even called my son when they found out he was bullied in school to give him encouragement. I don’t know if the Navajo nation has something similar but it might be worth checking into.

Totally agree about buying used rental cars, after 34 years of business travel experience renting “every kind of rig they’d ever been made”, but mostly from 1.5 years as car detailer at Dollar Rental Cars at Tucson Airport.

We had many cars with over 30k miles that never had an oil change and we spent a lot of effort getting rid of turkey cars to other Dollar rental franchises on one way rentals. I personally would be berated by the management for even topping off the oil and water as wasting time on the job.

Quit the job to go see the Grateful Dead in concert and found out two weeks later new ownership fired everyone. I like to think I would have been spared 😇

With all of Trump’s faux religious posturing, I’d love to have a reporter say:

“Mr. President, a lot of Americans are praying for you…to get the coronavirus and die.”

I apologize. That was crass—in poor taste. It should have read:

“Mr. President, a lot of Americans are praying for you…to get the coronavirus and fly away on the back of an angel.”

Interesting about rental cars. Last February I had to have my car in the body shop for about 10 days, so I got a long-term rental. About three days in they called me asking to return the car for an upgrade. When I asked about it the eager young manager explained that they’d found a buyer and needed to get the deal done quickly.

Putting a contract on Putin, having it carried out, and then delivering a polite note to Russian intelligence via back channels that the wet work is a consequence of the meddling. No meddling = no wet work.

A bit unrealistic, but it is difficult to see anything less having an effect.

We bought an ex-rental 8 years ago after a non-rental ‘97 car Dad bought for us back in ‘98 gave up the ghost.

In 8 years, the ex-rental hasn’t given us any problems. The ‘97 Plymouth - Dad liked Chrysler products - ended up being a constant headache and money sink from its first year until the day it died. The 2011 Nissan ex-rental - chosen by the wife and one of her work colleagues - hasn’t.

YMMV.

Though skateboards on brick/tile surfaces are a quite annoying (and fairly loud) noise. I could hear them a few blocks away at night when I was living in Philadelphia. And a group of them liked practicing jumps and rail trips off a slightly raised plaza near by. Some benches nearby made of stone had uneven wear patterns due to the skateboards being ridden/skidded down the side facing away from the street.

The good thing about focusing in the 36k that could have been saved is it doesn’t attempt to say no one would have died, which isn’t realistic.

We just got back from running out to Lowe’s to pick up plants and the vape store for some oil.

Happy to say that out of everyone we saw while we were out, a total of two men were without masks. Lowe’s has it pretty together - a single checkout line with everyone distancing, plastic guards at the registers to protect the cashiers.

The vape store guy greeted me with the news that I’m one of the ‘lucky ones’ - my vape oil of choice is Turkish tobacco flavor, one of the only flavors to survive the ban in New York state.

Other than that, it looks like it’s gonna rain. Thankfully pretty warm, though.

Good afternoon Lizards.

Drizzly and damp today after rain yesterday. Sun should be coming out and nice weather for the next couple of days.

The county COVID-19 data reset again; e.g. they updated the entire month of data. Looks like more confirmed cases added further back in the data set and also adjusting the deaths - but they still end up with roughly the same total number of deaths, but more confirmed cases distributed a bit differently. Thus, I have essentially given up keeping a separate spreadsheet of the numbers since the underlying data has entirely changed twice this week already.

Still intend to isolate for the next two weeks since I expects fools will be cross-contaminating themselves over the next couple of days. Good thing is that from what I’ve seen most of my friends on FB have little/no inclination to go out even if things are reopened. They seem quite aware of the risks.

This is getting shares among my FB group as well:

I’m so old when a Senator got derided as a community organizer by the party that would go on to nominate the host of the Apprentice for POTUS

My porch. Not my cat.

Went out to sit on the front stoop with a bowl of chili. The two neighbor cats turned up shortly to see what I was up to (and probably what the interesting smelling object I was carrying was.) The one in the photo is Spencer, who is normally the more skittish one around me. His sister Sara is generally more sociable.

Started pouring rain within five minutes of me sitting down. Not a good time for a walk, but at least the sprouting herb garden is getting watered without my intervention.

From May 11 in Autoweek:

Rental Giant Hertz Could Be in Bankruptcy in Weeks, Destroying What’s Left of the Used Car Market

Hertz going bankrupt would flood the used car market with hundreds of thousands of cars to sell off as assets all at once.

Story has been updated:

UPDATE: Hertz officially filed for bankruptcy on Friday, May 22. The 102-year old rental giant made the filing after being unable to secure some $400 million to pay holders of its asset-backed securities. The company suffered a dramatic drop in business following the halt experienced by the airline industry. Hertz faced a slim chance of a financial rescue in the days leading up to the May 22 filing, and is expected to keep operating while it comes up with a plan to pay its creditors.
