Is this some kind of thing? Because I feel totally owned and want go back to my childhood bedroom every time a Patriot shoots their dick off. I really wish they’d stop.

There are two factions in the struggle for the soul of the NY Times:
>> those who created Sunday’s magnificent tribute to the Americans who have perished from this pandemic and
>> those who think Bari Weiss, Ross Douthat, and Bret Stephens are good hires and continue to employ them.

My guess is there is no overlap between the groups.

The Times is still not getting any money from me. It’s not happening. And it’s not just because of Bari, Ross and Bret. It’s also because of Maggie Haberman’s White House reporting.

In particular, so-called superspreading events seem to be a major cause of infections. One London School of Hygiene analysis suggested that 80% of the secondary transmissions were caused by just 10% of infected people. In other words, if you want to avoid getting COVID-19, one of your major focuses should be avoiding a superspreading event.

Yup. Though most trees which are not actually native to areas are not a danger to the environment (such as my Siberian Elm tree, which grows way bigger in Nebraska than they do in Siberia because we have two more weeks of non-winter), some trees are a threat to local environments, crowding out native trees and plants.

I still want a honey locust tree for yard defence though.

From the Slate article:

The passion for planting trees comes partly from the fact that, in some places, they sequester carbon.

All trees sequester carbon (as do all plants). Trees give up carbon when they die and rot or are burned.

The black cherry tree which became part of my wife’s cherry kitchen table a hundred years ago still has all the carbon it sequestered from the day the table was made.

There are an awful lot of people suddenly concerned for the vice-president of an investment firm who tried to get a black man at a minimum harassed by the police (and at worst killed) and her future.

Hyperbole much? She is not “losing her identity forever or her future.” She’s not losing her identity forever; it’s been shown to the public. Don’t want to be outed as a racist? Maybe don’t racist in public in front of someone who is recording you and you know it.

Sure she can rehab her image. She can work on that. There is redemption for people who legitimately work toward reversing the damage they have done. (Don Black of Stormfront infamy’s son is a good example of that.)

The only part of the photo I don’t care for is Joe Biden saluting. He has never served in the military, and saluting is a specific military mark of recognition (including of civilian leaders).

My position on the military being subservient to the civilian government has been made clear here before, so I won’t go into that again, except to say that if Mr. Biden wanted to show a patriotic image whilst he was at the war memorial in Delaware, that is addressed in Title 36 - PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES AND OBSERVANCES: CHAPTER 10 - PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS

The correct display would be the right hand over the heart (as in the Pledge of Allegiance) for a civilian leader.

No flower pictures from me like all the beautiful photos from everyone else here; my flowers haven’t come up yet (too much snow this month I guess).

If we ever get to Spring, perhaps I will be able to post photos of my yellow and blue irises, Lillies-of-the-Valley, and my rosebush.

I’m also waiting for it to quit freezing some nights so I can plant black hollyhocks and opium poppies.

I’m pretty sure this was stupid shit that Reagan started, because he was dumb-ish and was trying to out-patriot everyone else. Unfortunately it “stuck” and people just expect it now. If a Democratic President tries to kill it, everyone to the right of Obama will be losing their shit, howling at the moon, and demanding a Benghazi-like show trial. Just watch. It’s about a media that actually gives a damn about informing rather than entertaining. And that ceased being the case in the last 30 years when 24/7 news stations realized they needed something to keep people’s attention when there weren’t breaking news events or major events that people kept checking regularly for updates.

I still recall that time in 2016 when our broadcast channels spent the best part of an hour showing an empty podium waiting for Trump to come out and make lame excuses for how his sham charity spent it money while Hillary was giving a speech on improving job opportunities for the handicapped…

I recall a time in 2015 when Trump was bragging how exciting his rallies were while people were falling asleep at Jeb Bush rallies. Within 15 minutes, CNN was airing an interview with a woman who had fallen asleep at a Jeb! rally…

It will remain my belief for ages to come that the media gave so much attention to Trump because they honestly didn’t believe he could win. That it was all about entertainment, all about the idea of putting the dancing clown on TV for the fleeting moment he’d remain in the race, before the dull and tedious task began of tearing down a Clinton presidency.

Which is why it came as a total shock to them when he did win, as they then had to actually act as though they believed him to be anything other than a court jester who’d happened to pick up the king’s crown.

The new “end” seems to be some nebulous date in August. Why? Because Donny wants the kids back in school and football being played by then so he can claim to have seen the country through the crisis. But mostly because he doesn’t want to have deaths going on during the RNC.

If by “End” you mean, COVID is still a thing but we are at the descending side of phase 2, then maybe that’s reasonable.

I think August might look like what IHME thought today was going to look like back in early April. Before everyone with a scorching case of weapons grade Karenitis with a side of freedumb started getting their way because science is hard and reality inconvenient.

They’re already there, hence why they’re getting “outraged” that states and businesses are still requiring masks out in public. For all their hatred of NYC, they’re capitalizing on the state’s outsized influence on national infection rates to argue that “the worst” has passed and we can just go back to “normal” as if a switch were flipped.

They still haven’t cancelled it and I’m afraid with us losing the War on Karen, HOB and the bands are going to yell YOLO and go on anyway.

I’m not going. End of Story. It’s not safe. If HOB and/or Livenation refuses to give me my money back because I refused to buy that scam ticket insurance (on top of bullshit fees that literally almost double the ticket price), which is for other things, not a viral pandemic, then…

There was a prediction the other day that we’re going to see a wave of bankruptcies in the Jul-Aug range and I can certainly see that as companies find that the public is not as eager to just put their health at risk for a good time. The Karens are a loud and assholish group, but they’re simply not a large enough demographic to make up the difference. If anything, the images of them flooding resorts and beaches with no masks and clustered together is only going to keep most people away.

The message from wingnut media is “Look at all those people out there, leading normal lives in the summer heat!” The message from everybody else? “Look at those morons! We’re gonna be stuck inside ‘til CHRISTMAS!”

A lot of people are going to avoid crowded concert and sports venues, airports and airlines, cruise ships, amusement parks and the general sort of elbow-to-elbow entertainment that makes up a lot of popular culture…

Anyone who is in a risk group or has regular contact to people in risk groups is going to think twice and weigh the risks accordingly. I certainly do not intend to change my behavior greatly just because I can.

Also keep in mind that a lot of folks canceled their summer vacation plans weeks or months ago. So the idea that they’re all going to suddenly grab up hotel reservations, plane tickets, concert tickets, etc because things are “over” is ridiculous. Most folks plan out vacations months in advance to take advantage of discounts and pick up “packages” rather than paying for everything individually. Not to mention all the major businesses and attractions that remain closed, with some saying they may not open until July.

To give a bit of anecdotal evidence, I’d gauge that 75%+ of the reservations at our hotel were made 48-72 hours prior to Friday. Why? Because the beach opening for Va Beach wasn’t announced until May 18th, when the weather forecasts were calling for cold and cloudy/rainy weather for the holiday weekend. But the beaches were the only things officially open, and officially mask and social distancing rules were in effect. The result? Total fucking chaos, as nobody followed the rules and restaurants were so desperate for business that even ones who legally couldn’t offer outdoor seating were putting tables and chairs out on the sidewalk.

On a related note, rumor today is Northam will be announcing that masks are mandatory when out in public. We’ll see how long that lasts.

I work (or really rather worked) as a tour guide on the Middle Rhine, we would pick up busloads of retirees from cruise ships and take them on walks, hikes and sightseeing trips all along the river.

Needless to say, that season ended before it began.

My only hope is that the end of the season will see an upswing in local tourists from the surrounding regions who have cancelled their holidays to Mallorca, Thailand or the Dominican Republic and still want to visit someplace scenic on their holidays.

All trees sequester carbon (as do all plants). Trees give up carbon when they die and rot or are burned.

The black cherry tree which became part of my wife’s cherry kitchen table a hundred years ago still has all the carbon it sequestered from the day the table was made.

If you want some honey locust pods I can collect them for you. They grow all over the Philadelphia area.

I live in GA and have seen this “strategy” used up close and personal.

After 9/11 we had some moments of unity and compassion here. We were briefly all Americans and you could feel a sense of compassion and working together.

It lasted about 2 weeks.

Ralph Reed and Newt Gingrich spent lots of time and money crafting a new way to make people scared of liberals. We were in league with terrorists, agreed with bin Laden, etc. If you don’t remember much about that, look up the old Max Cleland ads with his image fading into bin Laden’s. A war hero was successfully vilified into a terrorist when Cleland lost the election to Saxby Chambless. Cleland eventually left Georgia because of this shit. I began seeing Liberal Hunting License bumper stickers on vehicles, basically stating it was just fine to hunt us down and kill us for a list of reasons. It was done carefully and purposely, and if you had any basic knowledge of psychological manipulation you could pretty much see it unfold in real time.

I can’t forgive this. I never will. It was willfull and targeted. And they haven’t stopped. It’s in fact become worse.

startribune.com Coronavirus hit meat plants just as workers were being asked to speed up

The coronavirus began to spread through U.S. slaughterhouses this spring just when workers, already performing some of the most dangerous jobs anywhere, were being asked to take more risks by going faster.

Even as the outbreak began to force plants to temporarily close last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture continued granting permission to chicken processors to boost speeds by 25% on production lines. And the agency late last year approved an inspection system that would let pork plants abolish line-speed limits — now set at 1,106 hogs an hour — altogether.

With production reduced at many pork and chicken plants by the outbreak, there’s new scrutiny on the safety and procedures in them, including the line-speed changes that have been decades in the making.

“It was bad policy to begin with, but now I think it is irresponsible to do it — this is an infectious disease,” said Celeste Monforton, an occupational health and safety expert at Texas State University.

China’s central bank on Monday lowered its official yuan midpoint to the weakest since the 2008 global financial crisis, reflecting losses in the spot yuan on Friday after Beijing proposed a new national security law for Hong Kong.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint at 7.1209 yuan per dollar prior to the market open, 270 pips, or 0.38%, weaker than the previous fix of 7.0939. It was the weakest level since Feb. 28, 2008.

You know, most directors nowadays would just CGI something like a plane crashing into a building. But not Christopher Nolan. Nosiree, Bob.

Christopher Nolan crashed a real plane into a building for one of Tenet’s explosive scenes.

The crash appears at the end of the latest trailer for the espionage drama about “time inversion” which is set for release this summer.

John David Washington, who plays Tenet’s unnamed lead, told CinemaBlend that the whole crew was excited when Nolan captured the crash on film.

“That was a real plane, and that was a real building that they crashed that plane into,” he said. “And we, cast and crew, all witnessed it. It was epic! It was incredible, we all cheered and hurrayed and hurrahed when they yelled cut after Chris felt like he got it.

“What you saw is really what happened - at least the night I was there.”

Here’s the trailer again - the scene happens towards the end of the trailer.

Assumes Trump wont pardon Flynn on the way out - and Burdick means accepting that he did the crimes (and would have to testify to the facts/circumstances in any trial against Trump himself).

Among the first things Biden needs to do after entering the WH is to get the DOJ to eliminate the policy that you can’t indict a sitting president.

And then have the DOJ prosecute Trump and all his cronies on the charges that he delayed by being in office - the obstruction, wire/mail fraud, conspiracy, etc.

At this point, I strongly suspect how the Biden administration handles the crimes of the Trump administration will depend largely upon…the Trump administration. I have rather strong suspicions that, much like Obama did after Dubya left him in a quagmire, Joe will be too busy cleaning up Trump’s messes to take any real lasting action against Donny and his cohorts. That’s assuming Donny doesn’t pardon the whole lot of them for any federal crimes.

Might see the investigation and documentation of all the various shenanigans for the future record without much in the way of trials. And NY state is probably going to nail Trump and family to the wall in any case (or at least try.)

I’m also curious if Mueller left anything interesting to be opened once Trump leaves office. (And also wonder if he regrets much obeying the DOJ opinion to not press charges on a sitting President since not doing so in part led to the entire DOJ’s integrity getting more thoroughly wrecked than it previously was. (GOP administrations seem to like doing this.)

The problem is really that the owners don’t care which side wins, but that winning is based on sales…

In The Truth Terry Pratchett discusses turning lead into gold:

The rumour spread through the city like wildfire (which had quite often spread through Ankh-Morpork since its citizens had learned the words ‘fire insurance’).

The dwarfs can turn lead into gold …

It buzzed through the fetid air of the Alchemists’ quarter, where they had been trying to do the same thing for centuries without success but were certain that they’d manage it by tomorrow, or next Tuesday at least, or the end of the month for definite.

It caused speculation among the wizards at Unseen University, where they knew you could turn one element into another element, provided you didn’t mind it turning back again next day, and where was the good in that? Besides, most elements were happy where they were.

It seared into the scarred, puffy and sometimes totally missing ears of the Thieves’ Guild, where people put an edge on their crowbars. Who cared where the gold came from?

The dwarfs can turn lead into gold . . .

The dwarfs created a newspaper and turned lead type into gold money. They would print one thing one day and then take the exact opposite stance the next because who cares, it makes money. Pratchett’s humor is (was, he had passed, unfortunately) British and sometimes had the subtelty of a brick.

Florida was my prediction if the GOP pulled out of NC. Texas has also expressed interest.

The problem is we are only months out from the convention and trying to reorganize it now could lead to a massive, Fyre Festival like shitshow.

Trump’s in total bulkshit on a stick spin mode. Because he knows 100,000 Americans are dead and he’s the one to blame.

He knows somewhere deep inside that pea-brain of his that he destroyed the economy. He’s taking the blame and the hits, and he can’t deal with any of this.

Yup. Trump rips up papers when he’s done with them. He doesn’t get that everything is supposed to get saved.

There will be a long record of his failures and it will be a study of how never to operate a functioning government going forward.

Not that the GOP will ever heed the after-action reports, because this is what they wanted. They wanted to sabotage functioning govt. They wanted to destroy the ability to respond to disasters and push it to the states and localities, all while delivering more tax breaks to millionaires like Trump.

There was a guy with the same name as mine who must have moved into my neighborhood back in the 80’s. First call I got from someone said “Heeey [first name], aay kaaay aay Duuuke!” and asked how I was doing and inviting me to par-tay. Second call was from a sultry sounding woman who wouldn’t believe that I had no idea who she was. I finally asked her “how would I know you?” and she got really hurt and weepy and I eventually had to hang up on her. True stories. Soon they figured out I was not their guy and quit calling.

War dialer. My partners phone is one digit less than mine. She’ll get a call from an unknown number and a few minutes later I’ll get one. We don’t answer and let it go to voice mail. If they don’t leave a message they get blocked. Even if they do leave a message 99% of them still get blocked.

They don’t listen to the messages. My phone # is one digit off from a doctor’s office in another city. I get some truly frantic messages left about appointments and medication issues. I usually call the doctor’s office (if the person leaves a name) to tell them to call their patient—they are amazed that I do it, but thankful. Occasionally I’ll call the person who left the message, but they seem to be even more confused as to who I am and why I’m calling them. Re-emphasizing that no good deed goes unpunished.

I don’t think any talk about numbers matters to any Trump supporter or even Trump-curious. At this point, anyone supporting the yam is profoundly self-centered and simply doesn’t care; the numbers will be spun one way or the other and it’s just a game of Own the Libs and Hurt the Other. It only matters when it affects their family, their friends, or their precious selves. Not only is Amy Cooper a racist, but did anyone notice the brutal treatment of her pup? She was practically strangling the little fur baby. Where is the SPCA?

The shelter she got the dog from took it back.

What was that about ‘great reviews’ again?

That looks like a reverse 1980 result which I noted in a post I did yesterday…

The dog has been returned to the rescue shelter.

And she should be prohibited from ever having another dog. As someone on Twitter pointed out, that dog racked up a whole lot of injuries.

I’d substitute the Boston Globe for the Herald and add in the Guardian.

Oh man. That’s awful. So glad to hear that pup is safe today.

I’d remove the LA Times since they’ve been on the decline ever since Otis Chandler was removed as publisher. It’s reverting back to its right wing roots.

Oh and fuck the New York Times and you know why I detest that presstitution pit.

That was the second call I got that was from a number that was unknown. My cell number must be a bathroom wall somewhere in the middle of PA.

re: #232 (((Archangel1)))

Quick survey to help settle an argument:
In your opinions, would a (previously unheard of) tale of politics, corruption & collusion between a foreign country’s top government official & one of the world’s largest social media platforms make for a story worthy of major news coverage?
I’m inclined to think that the answer would be a resounding ‘yep’ but others beg to differ…

Edited to add: If you’re on the “yep” side of it, who would you trust in today’s media landscape to break such a story?

I wouldn’t necessarily trust a particular publisher. But there are reporters/writers that I would trust. Ronan Farrow is probably top of that list. Maddow is another. Probably a few others that I can’t necessarily think of off the top of my head.

Southern state Lizard here and I can say that aside from the MAGATs, everyone else seems to be pretty pissed with Trump right now.
