They scream fraud because they’re willing to do it:

A postal carrier in Pendleton County is accused of committing attempted election fraud by taking requests for Democratic absentee ballots and re-marking them as requests for Republican ballots.

Mail carrier Thomas Cooper, 47, of Dry Fork was charged with “attempt to defraud the residents of West Virginia of a fair election.”

The charge was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.

The investigator was Bennie Cogar of the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office and on behalf of the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office. Cogar swore an affidavit, which was included with the filing.

“Had Cooper’s conduct not been detected, it would have caused the Clerk to give Republican ballots to 5 Democrat voters — skewing the primary election by 5 votes and thereby defrauding all West Virginians of a fair election,” Cogar stated in the affidavit.

Jared Kushner Knows Black Voters Hate The Word ‘Freedom,’ But They Love Empty Slogans (Wonkette)

If Jared Kushner wants to do for the Trump campaign what he did for the Middle East, government data management, the opioid crisis, and the coronavirus pandemic response, who are we to get in his way? Godspeed, you magnificent genius!

Or, wait … should we say, OH NO WE ARE DOOMED? How can we possibly compete with the political Wunderkind who sleeps next to the president’s daughter?

Whatever.

Axios reports that Trump’s jack of all trades son-in-law has set himself the task of revamping the Republican Party platform in advance of the convention. Which will be held in North Carolina. Or possibly Georgia. Or maybe Florida. The point is, Jared will be deciding what the GOP cares about, not the RNC, not the voters, not the delegates. And Jared, in his unmatched wisdom, has decided that what voters want is a listicle.

At the same time, it’s cheaper to provide PPE than to stay shut down.

Interestingly enough, here in Rockwall, the fast food places are still keeping their lobbies closed.

The Chinese restaurant, when this all started, shut down for a month. We were afraid they were closing for good. When they reopened, they had build a pick-up window right at the door, completely blocking off the restaurant area. You can now only go about feet into the restaurant to pick up your order.

Owner of a McDonald’s franchise won’t provide his employees with protective equipment.

I don’t know if it’s a franchise store or a corporate-owned store.

Corporate-owned stores (at least the one I briefly worked at) don’t treat their employees any better.

Nothing prevents McDonalds from providing their franchise stores with masks or other aid anyway; they provide them with plenty of adverts.

If the franchisee (most franchisees are mulit-millionaires themselves) can’t afford to operate a business including protecting their customers and employees, they should be out of business.

The corporate owners of McDonalds will not like the public press; they can strip the franchise owner of his franchise.

Plaintiffs alleged 13 claims for relief under California law in their First Amended Complaint, including claims for unpaid wages, minimum wages, and overtime premiums; meal period and rest break violations;violations of record keeping and wage statement obligations; failure to reimburse crew members for uniform maintenance; and unlawful business practices. Depends on traffic, doesn’t it? A lot of people in the last 60 days have decided that driving to a drive-up window to order a double 1/4 pound toadburger with cheese might not be their best move. But you, as a franchiser, have no support from Corp Mickey D’s in laying off costs on PPE for your staff. And it’s not cheap. 95 masks are retailing at $7 and are good for one shift, at most. Nitrile gloves, are costly and each employee will go through at least 16 in an eight hour shift. They don’t breathe. That’s the point. They also tear up your hands.

You could go with latex, but 2-3% of people are allergic to it and drop in anaphylactic
shock soon after contact.

re: #94 austin_blue

So you are kinda screwed. You can’t afford to PPE up you staff, and you can’t afford to shut the store.

I don’t think most retail workers are expecting n95 masks and nitrile gloves. You can get surgical style masks for about 50 cents a mask, less if you buy in bulk and those disposable food service gloves they should already be using if they are handling food, are cheap and don’t imagine it would cost much to give them to the folks working the registers and cleaning the store.

As Scott’s Bluff County’s cases of coronavirus accelerate, the city comes to an important decision.

City of Scottsbluff reopens playgrounds (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

The largest age group with Covid-19 in the Nebraska Panhandle is 10-19.

Playground equipment in my village remains closed.

The conservative catechism must be followed. Trump says there’s no danger, other Republicans say the elderly have to die on the altar of capitalism, the governor lifted the so-called Directed Health Measure on the Panhandle, so the Scottsbluff city council has to comply with the masters of their religious faith.

Well past pumpkin time here in South Austin. Had a little micro-squall blast through around 10:00 this AM that dropped another 2/3” of wet on our entirely soggy soil. We are now at around 10” at my house for the month.

We average 32” a year.

Oof.

100,000 dead is just, you know, a number. It doesn’t really MEAN anything.

Oh, wait, it does! It means Trump has more blood on his hands than Lady (Scottish Play) could ever imagine. And. It. Is. All. On. Him.

And he’s losing his shit. Obamagate is dead. Biden/China has, at least for now, been dumped. (I think it’ll be back, because he has nothing else.)

And now he is accusing an ex-Congressman, a hard-right Republican whose seat is now held by Matt fucking Gaetz for the love of dog, of murder when he was a Thousand Fucking Miles Away in D.C.

Dr. Mark Allen Powell is a highly-regarded theologian.

He is a professor of theology at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Amongst his accomplishments, he is the editor of the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary, and the author of twenty-five books and one hundred articles on Christianity.

Prior to becoming a theologian, he was a professional music critic. with over one thousand published reviews of rock and pop bands.

So with a stellar, solid middle-of-the-road Protestant Christian education, you would be surprised to learn that Dr. Powell holds a “well, who can say” attitude about whether a person with epilepsy is possessed by demons or no. (I wouldn’t though, I’ve heard the claim from just about every denomination, and my freakin’ divorce judge in Florida—at least that good Christian judge went to jail for corruption.)

It is because of wingnuts mainstream theologians like this that we still suffer discrimination from Christians in things like employment or child visitation rights during a divorce proceeding.

The Epilepsy Foundation has an article on its site on demon possession and epilepsy, because we still live in the First Century.

Dr. Powell has a video discussion on the New Testament story (3:06) of the man who brings out his child and asks Jesus to cast demons out, because the child suffers (according to the writer of Matthew’s description) from symptoms of what we would describe as epilepsy today.

With well-regarded mainstream theologians like this guy, the epilepsy community doesn’t need any enemies.

Were Epileptic Seizures Caused by Demons? (Chapter 1, Introducing the New Testament)

Yup. The last laws prohibiting people with epilepsy from marrying or having children in the USA were finally repealed or struck down in 1974.

Driving laws in states such as Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Carolina which put unreasonable burdens on epilepsy still exist today (that was one of the motivations for my wife and I to leave Oklahoma and move to Nebraska). Outright bans were only struck down in the beginning of the XXI Century.

Like tens of thousands of preachers across the country, while keeping their tax-free status and while the GOP tries to eliminate the Johnson Amendment prohibiting politicking from the pulpit.

The Johnson Amendment is toothless, however: It has no penalty for violation.

Every year, churches across the nation from every denomination record political sermons and send recordings to the IRS daring them to arrest them; that demonstrates the law is toothless, and if the IRS actually did something, every Christian from Maine to California would whinge about persecution.

This is called Pulpit Freedom Sunday (Wikipedia), where pastors of every denomination hold specific political sermons then send recordings to the IRS. They have been doing it since 2008; the IRS does nothing.

Moreover, the IRS adopted a new rule in 2006 (back when the GOP controlled the House and Senate) prohibiting the IRS from looking at the books of a church unless the Treasury Department specifically orders the IRS to do so.

Under conservative governance, church finances are entirely above the law. (There is no way Steve Mnuchin would ever authorise such an investigation.)

Lotteries. A rant from a poor person (me).

So I have a MegaMillions ticket. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million against. Right now, the jackpot is $336,000,000.

There are endless think pieces in everything from high-finance magazines to tabloids on why you should not waste your money on lottery tickets, because the odds of winning the jackpot are so astronomically high.

That is then used to bash poor people (like me) who buy lottery tickets. The most charitable slur is “it’s a tax on people who are bad at math.” You’ve probably read far worse slurs against poor people buying lottery tickets when the could do anything from save money (because I can get really rich on saving $15) or invest it (because I can get really rich on investing $15).

Every one of these think pieces are written from the position of “you’re smart not to buy lottery tickets, unlike those benighted fools who do” (with the implication of low intelligence, no education, &c).

No one at Forbes or Bloomberg Billionaire (yes, that exists) or The Economist (on which I spend more money than lotto tickets) ever asks a poor person why we buy lottery tickets.

We know the capitalist system as structured in our nation means we will never be able to “get ahead.” The odds of me becoming a millionaire though my own hard work (never mind discrimination) are horribly bad. Right now there are about 4,900,000 millionaires in the USA (some of whom became that way by winning lottos).

Each week there are two draws for the MegaMillions; the jackpot isn’t the only prize.

megamillions.com

The odds of winning one million dollars are 1 in 12,607,000+ against for each draw. The odds of winning ten thousand dollars are 1 in 931,000. $10,000 is about half my income for a year.

$1,000,000 or even $10,000 would be unimaginable riches to many poor people; those odds are better than any poor person has of advancing into the upper middle class.

All the think pieces which come out every couple months about how stupid or foolish poor people are to buy lotto tickets are to assuage those who do not to feel superior. Those pieces are meant to denigrate the poor, for whom a lotto ticket actually provides a better chance of escaping poverty than any sort of so-called meritocracy under capitalism.

Hence I buy lotto tickets. My odds are better, because I’m not bad at math.

She said she got her law degree from Seattle University School of law which I don’t believe is in question, and she got a bachelors in liberal arts from Antioch University. That is the degree in question as a spokeswoman there says she attended but does not appear to have graduated. However, her transcript from the Seattle university school of law has Antioch listed as the prior degree granting institution. So maybe she committed some sort of fraud there.

Reade claims she had changed her identity after getting out of a bad marriage and had to present coursework prior to her identity change to get her degree. That remains to be proven, but I could see how an identity change could screw up record keeping and show as a student not having completed their degree.

Also, tribal authoritarians can’t understand people who don’t think in tribal authoritarian terms. A long time ago, I was talking to my wingnut cousin about Michael Jackson: she couldn’t believe I thought he was a pedophile, because don’t liberals like black people? So why wouldn’t I support him? My details aren’t off, though they are incomplete.

Antioch College states she earned no degree from them, though she claimed she did.

I was unaware of the JD degree, so I went looking.

Seattle University School of Law confirmed that Ms. Reade graduated with a J.D. degree in 2004. The school only considers accepting students with bachelor’s degrees, according to its website. But it would not share what degree Ms. Reade presented with her initial application, citing federal privacy standards.

nytimes.com

Perjury is a hard crime to prosecute. However, lying about qualifications makes it easy to reverse a conviction, and she did in fact lie about her qualifications.

Even with the JD degree, that does not qualify her as an expert on domestic violence, the claim she made in many cases as an expert witness.

LOL. Better than my wife’s retirement plan.

She’d amassed over a quarter-million dollars in her retirement plan from Digital Equipment Corporation. After it passed through Compaq and landed at Hewlett-Packard, HP decided to outsource the Digital retirement fund to a too-big-to-fail bank.

By the time the court cases against the bank from former Digital employees were completed, her retirement fund had shrunk from $250,000 to $54,000. The rest had evaporated in the stock market from the bank. (All that happened before I met her.)

A couple years ago she got her settlement cheque from the court case. We took the money and deposited it in the agricultural bank in Lisco (population 68), figuring it was much safer there in an IRA than letting any too-big-to-fail bank get their mitts on the remainder.

Whether or not Reade ends up being charged with perjury will likely depend upon court transcripts, namely how she presented/listed her qualifications when being sworn in as an expert witness. If in any trial, she stated something to the effect that she was a graduate or (as she proclaimed at one time) a member of the faculty of Antioch, then that’s a clear case of perjury and the DA will likely not hesitate to charge her with such. But if she only said that she “studied at” or “attended” Antioch, then that’s a grey area that’s likely to see nothing more than a lot of grumbling and treating such cases up for review with all the delight of passing a kidney stone without anesthetics.

I mean…..this happened in Central Park. In New York City. FFS, all she would’ve needed to do was just say, “Hey, go fuck yourself!” in her best Tribeca accent, leashed up the dog and walked away. I mean, that’s pretty much the normal response in NYC. And that would’ve been the end of that. Just another typical day in Central Park.

When black people meet with a rather disproportionate response from law enforcement, we often hear the statement “he should not have been doing X in the first place”…

I don’t think assuming she’s a right winger is necessarily true. Racism isn’t exclusive to wingers and I’d bet that “but I have X friends!” is something ingrained in some people that they believe they aren’t racist; it’s not just a throw away line.

Not surprising, really. I was referring to his issue with Bashear, though.

It’s really hard to not give up on people sometimes. These people are supposedly better than others when they are most often far less supreme in any way. Many of these recent Karen videos are middle aged, fat & unattractive white women (I fit a couple of those categories, too) and they’re supreme how?

It’s disheartening. I laugh at these people but it’s really not funny in any way.

re: #138 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I had to pay 10 bucks to get 100 tickets in the tiny house lottery. I also plan to win the tesla “911” porsche and the campervan. I’m gonna have to sell the “911” porsche so that I can buy the land to put the tiny house on. the reason I’m having to buy the land is because there’s no Omaze raffle for it. At least not yet.

I am against mail-in ballots as a matter of course, but until we have a vaccine/treatment/cure and/or reliable widespread testing for COVID-19, then mail-in balloting is a valid option.

In addition, we need to seriously reform the entire process of ID, registration and voting. Perhaps it is up to the individual states, but I think we need some national standards to ensure consistency, traceability and transparency.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Fuck Trump, Fuck the GOP, and fuck all the enabling media types who magic balance fairy the hell out of events to ignore that we have an unstable sociopath running the nation into a ditch, setting it aflame, and then blaming Obama for all the actions Trump did.

This morning, Trump’s twitter feed is an endless series of postings that show his intent to violate the 1A, suppress voter turnout, blame Obama for his failures, and deflect/project like IMAX. All the while, his failed admin has killed over 100,000 Americans and he wants to take a victory lap because we haven’t had more people die.

But for the efforts at the state/local level, the death toll would have been much higher. Remember, Trump gave Cuomo grief for imposing a no-go zone around New Rochelle after the outbreak started there. Turns out that Cuomo was already late to respond, but Trump’s action was that even this was too much.

All the while, Trump has slow rolled testing and now claims we’re doing more tests than anyone else.

We have to do more tests because we don’t have containment and it’s spreading like wildfire nationwide. States opening back up before they even have containment is peak Trumpism. Land of the Ozarks level insanity. The GOP don’t care. They built that.

Even fucking Hannity seems to realize that he went too far, but will never take the blame or fall for spewing nonstop bilge about not needing to wear masks or social distance.

Trump is in the WH. He’s supposed to lead by example. Instead he shows what a callous fucker he is and enables white nationalists and bigots to let their inner freak fly. And not wear masks and make it a political statement instead of a public health necessity.

This fucking country man…

(Via CBS) Only about half of Americans say they would get a COVID-19 vaccine if the scientists working furiously to create one succeed, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

That’s surprisingly low considering the being put into the global race for a vaccine against the coronavirus that’s sparked a pandemic since first emerging from China late last year. But more people might eventually roll up their sleeves: The poll, released Wednesday, found 31% simply weren’t sure if they’d get vaccinated. One-in-five said they’d refuse.

Health experts already worry about the whiplash if vaccine promises like President Trump’s goal of a 300 million-dose stockpile by January fail. Only time and science will tell — and the new poll shows the public is indeed skeptical.

“It’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“The unexpected looms large and that’s why I think for any of these vaccines, we’re going to need a large safety database to provide the reassurance,” he added.

Among Americans who say they wouldn’t get vaccinated, seven-in-ten worry about safety.

“I am not an anti-vaxxer,” said Melanie Dries, 56, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. But, “to get a COVID-19 vaccine within a year or two … causes me to fear that it won’t be widely tested as to side effects.”

For the record, vaccines get the shit tested out of them BEFORE they get to market. The only question mark would be potential long term side effects, but most vaccines don’t have many of those anyway.

Oh, and I would also like to remind everyone that the PRESIDENT of the United States is encouraging this kind of skepticism around vaccines, in addition to everything ELSE he has done while mismanaging this pandemic.

I don’t doubt Zuckerberg is afraid of regulations from a Democratic-led House/Senate/POTUS - he’s pretty much said has much. Now, Trump is outright threatening FB and Twitter with being shut down.

Zuck - he’ll probably cave and turn FB into a straight-up GOP propaganda outlet.

He already did that!

I would lump this in with his thinking that he can order states to reopen churches. He keeps talking about forcing the companies to not censor conservative thought.

Trump sees himself as being a big tough guy on Twitter, but this is pretty much how everyone else sees him at this point.

We’re in a spiral now - Trump’s threats and lies are getting increasingly more stupid and the laughter keeps getting louder. And the irony of his claiming Twitter is trying to silence him while simultaneously threatening to shut them down in a twitter post is thick af.

And it’s only Wednesday.

Yeah, I have had that discussion with the Mrs. She’s concerned about sufficient testing before getting it. Doesn’t want to be an early adopter.

I’ve read about the failures with the polio vaccine in the 1930s, and then bad batches in the 1950s.

With Trump running things into the ground, would the vaccine be tested as fully as possible and corners not cut to get Trump “a win” with a vaccine?

Are these companies willing to destroy themselves by cutting corners to appease Trump?

We’ve seen all manner of company bend over backwards to appease Trump in trivial matters, but there’s nothing more serious than a vaccine against covid19. It takes years to develop and test vaccines.

I can see the reluctance as much as I see the need to get one to save lives and protect myself from potentially spreading it to others.

There is every reason to believe that DT will be out of office before testing begins, and no reason to be sure that the vaccine will be found and/or tested in the US. I’ll start worrying about all that when I see what’s on offer.

So I’ve always been a big X fan. One of their less known albums, Ain’t Love Grand? is one of my favorites. There was a cover of the Small Faces track “All or Nothing” that I really liked. It turns out, however, that they hated it. They were forced to do the cover by the record company and when they rereleased the album, the stuck it on the end and intentionally screwed with it. This bummed me out since my cassette had died long ago. I finally found a nice copy of the original cd release on Eprey. I can respect that they weren’t happy with the song, but damn they did a great job on it I thought and I’m glad to finally have a copy of that version again.

On another song, I remember watching a video about a band that was in the studio recording their first album. The label was demanding they cover a song and they really didn’t want to. They went in planning on tanking it and doing the worst job they possibly could. But when push came to shove, their musicianship wouldn’t let them and they did a good job on it.

The band was Quiet Riot and the song was Slade’s Cum On Feel the Noize.

Or is it all just hot-air announcements to try to gin up outrage, followed by a quiet fold before it can actually get to court (and likely be thrown out at first motion)?

from this past sunday’s electoral-vote.com mailbag

E.L. in Dallas, TX, writes:…Whenever I am asked about a medical procedure that is elective, I say the same thing. “Would your doctor have the procedure done on themselves or their family?” Assuming you trust your physician (and if you do not, you should change doctors), ask him or her if they and their family have been vaccinated…

…with COVID-19 the international response and literature is vetted to a degree that I have never witnessed. The best example of this is the claims concerning treatment with Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin. In less than 2 months, large studies have been conducted that have completely debunked the initial claims and have demonstrated the treatment as being harmful… Even after being developed, the production will be a massive and novel undertaking that will involve months or years to produce enough vaccines for the United States and the world. The vaccine will initially be available to those who are healthy and at highest risk—in other words, frontline healthcare workers. That means the results of being vaccinated will be established prior to the vaccine being available to the general public.

We should all have a primary physician that we know and trust, and these circumstances are the perfect illustration of the importance of that relationship. Maybe not every healthcare provider will agree that the vaccine is necessary (there are multiple pediatricians in my community that use “alternative vaccine schedules”), but your decision should be based on the input of someone you trust with your health and not the advice of the government.

I may like George Conway’s politics marginally more than Kellyanne Conway’s, but…

What is happening inside that marriage does not necessarily reflect any configuration we imagine from their public personas. The most obvious reason being that both are performing for an audience and that spectacle is what we’re judging them on.

And I feel it’s necessary to point out a specific angle on this that I don’t see people are considering: George Conway may be “in the right” in his current expressed politics but could still be a shitty husband whose shittiness contributes to Kellyanne Conway doing the kind of sour-tempered Mouth-of-Sauron work she does. That is just as “real” a story as the idea that he’s somehow the long-suffering one.

And given that the two met up through the intervention of Ann Coulter, there’s the distinct possibility that the Conways are, dialectically, both opportunistic apers of trends to make a buck and dismal wanna-be hegemons that believe some form of inherent hierarchy of human beings…hence their conservatism. And since US conservatism is always about the nonspecific sense of inherent superiority that excuses the errors and flaws of the in-group, for them it may just be normal to forgive one another their wrong-think because the important thing is neither is part of the greater mass of born-wrong lesser kinds of people.

True, no amount of death will move his cult. But at the margins, it could motivate more people on the left to vote Biden, and some moderately Republican voters to stay home. The main reason Trump squeaked to victory in 2016 is that an unusually large % of voters on the left voted 3rd party. If most of them vote for Biden, he will get a majority of the vote and win the election.

re: #248 William Lewis

On another song, I remember watching a video about a band that was in the studio recording their first album. The label was demanding they cover a song and they really didn’t want to. They went in planning on tanking it and doing the worst job they possibly could. But when push came to shove, their musicianship wouldn’t let them and they did a good job on it.

The band was Quiet Riot and the song was Slade’s Cum On Feel the Noize.

When The Beatles went into the studio to record their second single, George Martin wanted them to record an outside song called How Do You Do It. They recorded a version to keep Martin happy, but then told him that they couldn’t release that song and go back to face their Liverpool audience - it would shame their reputation.

Martin relented and asked them to come up with something better, and they came back with Please Please Me, which Martin knew was a giant hit as soon as it was done.

Martin gave How Do You Do It to Gerry and the Pacemakers. It eventually made top 10 in the US, but everything UK was making the top 10 in the US during the British Invasion.

How Do You Do It? (Anthology 1 Version)

It’s more than sabre rattling: details here. China just flat out invaded miles of Indian territory. There’s a disputed area, but the Chinese have gone well past this Line of Control. So, a nuclear country has just invaded another nuclear country and it barely makes the news.

It wouldn’t be surprising if China felt emboldened by the moron in the WH, who essentially greenlit the moves against Hong Kong, because all he cared about were his financial dealings with China. Trump’s only concern is a vibrant stock market, and as long as the Dow Jones is doing well (certainly a lot better than it should be given the pandemic and its effect on global economic activity), he figures he has a real chance at re-election. He doesn’t want to engage in any activities that might have a deleterious effect on this single measure that has escaped full damage from the ETTD effect.

The libertarian right, the biggest fans of Trump, also doesn’t care about what happens elsewhere. They have this fantasy that as long as we have a powerful military that can stop foreign aggression on the homeland, we don’t need to worry about conflicts elsewhere.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she was.

There are a LOT of liberal and progressive folks who are individually racists, and have no problem with the racist biases of American society. When the rubber hits the road, they’ll cling to their racism without a second thought.

I believe that some people, and this, I hate to say, is more lefties, who don’t like racism, don’t think they’re racist because they have that friend, but when that rubber his the road their innate self comes out.

I’m not saying that’s the case with her but I do think it’s a thing.

Example, do you cross the street when you see a group of black kids coming at you?

I, myself, tend to cross the street when I see a bunch of kids coming at me. Because I think groups of any kids, of any color, including white, might be assholes.

If we’re honest with ourselves, it’s real easy to be racist assholes (all of us) because that’s what society teaches us. But a lot of folks realize it and fight against the socialization.

Other folks don’t fight it; they embrace it and lean into it, even while they say they don’t have a racist bone in their body.

Science based decisions are clear eyed and sharply delineated.

Trump’s involvement in anything tends to blur.

Nope — There have been past times when science was neglected to meet a timetable. The Challenger disaster was one of them. Let’s not forget, though, that science is always evolving and may not be quite as clear-eyed as you think. Scientists are human and evidence is not always as clear-cut as you would hope, especially in medically related decisions. Serious side-effects may take years to emerge or may not become apparent until a medicine is administered to more than the handful of test subjects.

Let’s not forget too the ongoing opioid epidemic, where pharmaceutical firms are responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of customers in order to improve their bottom line.

Actually the Apollo astronauts did have an armoured car on standby. If shit went wrong close to takeoff they had a procedure to use a zipline to get them off top of the Saturn V stack, down to the ground and into the armoured car which would then head away from the pad as fast as possible, hopefully outrunning anything Bad happening to the two thousand tonnes of propellant and liquid oxygen half a mile behind them. It was never used but it was there.

In the From the Earth to the Moon episode “We Have Cleared the Tower”, that’s exactly what you see in the opening minutes, as Guenter Wendt runs Wally Schirra, Walt Cunningham, and Donn Eisele through an emergency pad egress test in the lead-up to Apollo 7.
