In Which Donald Trump Flips Out Because Twitter Fact-Checks His Lies About Mail-in Voting

Politics • Views: 25,579

For the first time yesterday, Twitter did something they announced they would do months ago: they put a warning message on Donald Trump’s dishonest tweets about mail-in voting.

The warning doesn’t show on this embedded tweet…

… but if you click through to Twitter, this is what you’ll see.

And if you click on that message, you’ll see this.

They called him out very directly, by name! And predictably, this sent the ranting maniac in chief into a whiny paranoid rage, and he promptly threatened to shut Twitter down.

There is, of course, absolutely no evidence of anything Trump says in this tweet. Far from being silenced on social media, conservatives have worked the refs so thoroughly that they’ve been granted incredible leeway to lie and spread conspiracy theories to their dark little hearts’ content. And notice that he’s actually repeating his lie about mail-in voting in that second tweet.

And the funniest thing about this massive tantrum? His tweet wasn’t even removed. This is all just a performance for his cult members. What really got Trump’s goat is that his lies were called out very publicly, in a way he couldn’t ignore. He was humiliated; a fate worse than death for a malignant narcissist.

But come on, Trump won’t shut down Twitter, even if he could, which he can’t. What would he do in the morning while sitting on his solid gold toilet? He’s addicted.

But he will try his best to bully and intimidate them into backing down, and if the past is any indication, he may very well succeed.

“Get the facts” is a big step in the right direction, but I’d like to see something more direct, like “this tweet includes X false statements”, where X is replaced by the number of false statements found in the tweet.

It would be even better if people with a long history of false statements would get hit with “this tweet includes X lies”.

Clicking through that “what you need to know” link provides an extremely detailed and comprehensive refutation of Trump’s lies in that tweet.

Kudos to Twitter for putting in some real effort here.

As always, it’s discouraging to note that refuting the lies took orders of magnitude more time than it took for Trump to spew them.

Toobin isnt having Twitter’s excuse.

“Twitter is a private company. They have rules. Like Greyhound buses have rules,” Toobin said on Tuesday. “You can’t stay on a Greyhound bus if you break the rules. President Trump has broken the rules of Twitter over and over again, and Twitter has done nothing but put out statements of corporate gibberish like the one it did today.”

Toobin suggested Trump’s tweets were in clear violation of Twitter’s rule against targeted harassment. “All Twitter should do is follow its own rules and take these tweets down,” he said.

“Twitter is just afraid of both the president and right-wing trolls who follow him and that’s why they’re doing what they should be doing, which is taking this tweet down,” Toobin continued. He added: “If Twitter had any decency, if Twitter had any corporate conscience, they would just take it down automatically

Chester County, PA COVID-19 totals as of yesterday:
Confirmed: 2,545
Deaths: 246 (+5?)

Trend analysis pretty much impossible since they change their data set retroactively now. So a day that was “+12” when I looked two days ago might be “+25” today. So the change from yesterday to the day before might look mild now; +5. But it will possibly be two or four times that if I look on Friday.

Nothing at all in the data that makes me want the local stores and such to reopen.

Someone who’s float this by trump. From that ruling Sunday Looney Loomer:

Freedom Watch’s First Amendment claim fails because it does not adequately allege that the Platforms can violate the First Amendment. In general, the First Amendment “prohibits only governmental abridgment of speech.” Manhattan Cmty. Access Corp. v. Halleck. Freedom Watch contends that, because the Platforms provide an important forum for speech, they are engaged in state action. But, under Halleck, “a private entity who provides a forum for speech is not transformed by that fact alone into a state actor.” Freedom Watch fails to point to additional facts indicating that these Platforms are engaged in state action and thus fails to state a viable First Amendment claim.

Sometimes Tom “6 months” Friedman does have an accurate insight into the Washington elite. His castigation of Pompeo’s performance as Secretary of State is right on and his characterization of Pompeo as worse than Tillerson is right on.

But I do know he has been the worst secretary of state in American history, without a single diplomatic achievement.

I know you thought that Rex Tillerson had retired that title. Tillerson was ineffective, but Tillerson had integrity and ethics. Pompeo has none. American taxpayers deserve a refund from him for his education at West Point.

Yep. About a week after I created a Pay Pal account my credit card got hit with 4 AAA cash advances for about $1600. Fortunately it was a credit union card and they cleared everything up before the end of the month. I won’t use Pay Pal for anything.

I have the good fortune to have an old “free checking for life” account that I use for paypal. I’ve never had any trouble with it, but if I did, it never has more than about $400 in it.

None of the checks themselves are autographed. Everyone who gets a payment is supposed to get a signed letter, whether or not they get a paper check. I got this letter but I haven’t opened yet. (I don’t have anything to ignite it with, unless I get out my soldering iron…)

Finally deposited my check today, after using my Sharpee to block out its name. Haven’t dealt with the letter yet—think I’m doing a return to sender, except the return address would be the IRS—maybe a forward to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

NW Iowa is Steve King’s district:

Record COVID-19 testing, spike in positive cases reported in NW Iowa

[…]

The other big number was 414. That’s how many new cases were reported in Buena Vista County, the Storm Lake area.

As with most major increases, the governor is chalking that up to more testing. She said she’s not considering restrictions there.

[…]

The Storm Lake area is meat packing area (big Tyson plant), as noted not long ago by the Guardian:

Why is Trump insisting that meat-packing plants stay open despite risks?

[…]

In Storm Lake, Iowa, center of the densest livestock-producing region in America, none of the roughly 2,500 pork and turkey processing workers at Tyson Foods plants have been tested for the coronavirus. Hence, Buena Vista county reports only four cases so far, while nearby red meat hub Sioux City is the hottest spot in the USA. Workers’ temperatures are checked. If they feel sick they are advised to stay home. They are told to space out and not crowd into the locker rooms. Plastic hangs between workers on the line. Tyson says it is doing all it can by staggering breaks and spacing workers.

[…]

On my Facebook feed someone reposted a supposed post by a Storm Lake hospital worker, who was frantically worried because the local hospital’s ICU capacity was over-run, that Sioux City’s two hospitals couldn’t take any more cases, and that ICU patients are going to have to be taken to other parts of Iowa. I didn’t check to see if the post was valid, but the source who reposted it is someone I usually trust.

Side note: there are hispanic immigrants who work these meat packing facilities, and you can find more than one story about anti-immigrant angst in lily-white northwestern Iowa.

Trump is turning this into a partisan issue:

The poll found 65% of Americans support vote-by-mail as an alternative, a greater than 2-to-1 margin over the 32% of Americans who oppose the option. Three percent said they were undecided.

Findings differ dramatically by party. Eighty-four percent of Democratic voters said they support voting by mail and just 14% said they oppose it. Less than half of Republicans polled, 43%, said they support vote-by-mail as an alternative while more than half, 53%, were opposed.

Self-identified independent voters said they back vote-by-mail during the pandemic by a 66%-31% margin.

That poll is from the end of April. I really hope we are at the “darkest just before the dawn” part of our long national nightmare.

Naaah, it can get darker: and almost certainly will - until Nov. 3, anyway: but this poll just confirms what I’ve thought for a while: when it comes to politics, 1/3 of the country is hopeless: the real key to getting ANY sort of positive action going is going to have to depend on getting the other 2/3 either involved- or just pissed-off enough to make their numbers count…

“Learned this was an active shooter with multiple weapons on the bridge firing at cars with no particular association. There was an active-duty soldier assigned to Ft. Leavenworth waiting in traffic behind the event, saw the event unfold, determined it was an active shooter and intervened by striking the shooter with his vehicle, causing him to be critically injured, ending the encounter with the active shooter and likely saving countless lives,” Chief Kitchens said.

Chat Noir out exploring

Iris photos from a walk yesterday.

Chat Noir out yesterday. Cat encounters with neighbor cats today:
(1) Tuxedo Cat jumps barrier, runs outside, encounters neighbor cat Sara, gets chased back inside by same. (Still in pissy mood an hour later.)

(2) Chat Noir gets let out (since I was curious). Is approached by Sara, who meows at him a few times. He generally ignores here and wanders about. She follows for a bit and then wanders off. Neighbor cat Spencer observes from afar and opts to not get involved. Chat Noir stayed out for 15-20 minutes and basically just walked around tentatively is sniffed things. He also kept track of where I was and came over for reassurance every so often.

Evening Lizardim from the sunny and sorrowful wild north country. The state is grieving and ablaze with anger today over the cold-blooded murder of George Floyd. I am without words right now over the whole situation; I have had friends, some close, telling me things that have brought this killing so much closer to home than any of the others. How go things among the lizardfolk on this sunny summer Wednesday?

Thing is, when I look at what Dominic Cummings did, as far as not following quarantine rules in seeking to make arrangements for his family, his actions don’t seem that out of the ordinary, at least to me living here in the US.

That’s because it really isn’t. The fact that there is actual national outrage over a politician committing a relatively minor rules infraction during a time of crisis is evidence of what can happen with a press that is willing to hold people to account. It can happen in the US too, but only to Democrats, because that’s the agenda of the national media.

It’s also evidence of some sense of national solidarity and a belief in the common good, which, despite the severe problems the UK has right now, still exists in some form there. And the fact that basically all of America refuses to participate in something similar for the good of their neighbours is evidence of the lack of the same things here.

Pennsylvania GOP ripped as ‘reckless and irresponsible’ for keeping member’s COVID-19 status secret

On Wednesday, Pennsylvania GOP state Rep. Andrew Lewis announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 20.

“Out of respect for my family, and those who I may have exposed, I chose to keep my positive case private. Now that I have fully recovered and completed the quarantine as required by the Department of Health,” said Lewis. “I feel now is the appropriate time to share this information with the public and my constituents and I look forward to being a resource in sharing my experiences with COVID-19 and helping our community navigate this crisis together.”

Of course he told GOP pals and they just did not say a word to Democrats…
